Book Description

Your greatest regret at the end of your life will be the lions you didn't chase. You will look back longingly on risks not taken, opportunities not seized, and dreams not pursued. Stop running away from what scares you most and start chasing the God-ordained opportunities that cross your path. In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day is inspired by one of the most obscure yet courageous acts recorded in Scripture, a blessed and audacious act that left no regrets: “Benaiah chased a lion down into a pit. Then, despite the snow and slippery ground, he caught the lion and killed it” (2 Samuel 23:20 -21). Unleash the lion chaser within!

What if

the life you really want,

and

the future

God wants for you,

is hiding

right

now

in your biggest

problem,

your worst

failure…

your greatest

fear

?

Story Behind the Book

“Our best days often start out as our worst days. And our greatest opportunities are often disguised as our biggest problems. You can land in a pit with a lion on a snowy day, and it will seem like the end of the road. But God is in the recycling business. He recycles past experiences and uses them to prepare us for future opportunities. That is the story of my life. And that is the story of your life. Look in the rearview mirror long enough and you’ll see that God has purposely positioned you everywhere you’ve been—even when it seemed you’d taken a wrong turn.” —Mark Batterson

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and informative.......2007-10-10

This book changed my perspective on some rough things I have been going through. In a instant it changed everything in my world.
I recommend it to anyone who is wondering what they are doing with their lives and how they ended up where they are. It answers a lot of questions and emboldens and strengthens. It is exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Great Motivator to Pursue the Audacious.......2007-09-17

This unusual title comes from a Bible verse in 2 Samuel 23:20-21 which says, "There was also Beniah son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. He did many heoic deeds, which included killing two of Moab's mightiest warriors. Another time he chased a lion down into a pit. Then, despite the snow and slippery ground, he caught the lion and killed it. Another time, armed only with a club, he killed a great Egyptian warrior who was armed with a spear. Benaiah wrenched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with it."

So basically, Beniah was the freaking man. He was the type of guy you'd want on your side going into battle. He became the head of the bodygaurd for King David and eventually became the comander of the army of Israel under King Solomon.

The book is based around this passage and goes on to expand and describe how seemingly difficult circumstances which one might initially shy away from or avoid can turn out for great good if faced head on.

Batterson describes a number of modern day lion chasers whom he has known such as a Georgetown lawyer who stopped practicing law to make a film about human trafficking in Uganda, a tenured professor who quit his post and started a dot com company, a college graduate who moved to the Marshall Islands to teach English, and an executive at Microsoft who gave up millions of dollars in stock options to start a church. Batterson himself is a lion chaser in that he moved to Washington D.C. to plant a church in the heart of D.C. on Capitol Hill which meets at a movie theatre in Union Station.

There are all kinds of logical reason not to do certain things but sometimes we need to have some guts and just go for it. God doesn't call us to a life of mediocrity but wants great things to happen through His work in us. Many times these things don't seem to make sense in our finite understanding but God is working so that He will be glorified if we're willing to step out in faith.

A great scene from the movie "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" illustrates this concept as well. Jones is faced with a great chasm which is impossible to jump across but realizes it is a step of faith. When he takes a step out into thin air despite what his eyes see in the great depth below, he then finds firm ground and is able to walk across the chasm.

Of course there are times to be practical and follow common sense as well. One should not simply jump into something just because it sounds fun or exciting. It should be thought out and prayed about. God has a tendency to confirm direction towards lion chasing opportunities.

A quality quote from Mark Twain also illustrates this mentality. "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Throughout the book Batterson helps motivate the reader and give them the chutzpah to go tackle tough tasks and chase lions. I recommend it for anyone who might be hestitating about something in life or who needs a little extra encouragement in seeking out and going after goals in life.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-09-13

We need more lion chasers. Life is too short to "play it safe". This is a great book and worth the time to sit down and read.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!.......2007-08-05

Probably one of the greatest books I have ever read. Basically if you are looking for a book to pump you up, to get off your butt and go do something in the world, instead of sitting around eating ice cream on your couch, then get this book. It will change your life!!!

I was in a bookstore and the cover caught my eye. I picked it up and read the back cover and had to have it. I'm only partly through it and it is a must read, especially for those who are told God never says NO or always answers our prayers..

The Snowy Day, a 1963 Caldecott Medal winner, is the simple tale of a boy waking up to discover that snow has fallen during the night. Keats's illustrations, using cut-outs, watercolors, and collage, are strikingly beautiful in their understated color and composition. The tranquil story mirrors the calm presence of the paintings, and both exude the silence of a freshly snow-covered landscape. The little boy celebrates the snow-draped city with a day of humble adventures--experimenting with footprints, knocking snow from a tree, creating snow angels, and trying to save a snowball for the next day. Awakening to a winter wonderland is an ageless, ever-magical experience, and one made nearly visceral by Keats's gentle tribute.

The book is notable not only for its lovely artwork and tone, but also for its importance as a trailblazer. According to Horn Book magazine, The Snowy Day was "the very first full-color picture book to feature a small black hero"--yet another reason to add this classic to your shelves. It's as unique and special as a snowflake.

Book Description

No book has captured the magic and sense of possibility of the first snowfall better than The Snowy Day. Universal in its appeal, the story has become a favorite of millions, as it reveals a child's wonder at a new world, and the hope of capturing and keeping that wonder forever.

You can't go wrong with a Keats book. The collage art work is super interesting and the multicultural aspects of the book are wonderful. This is a great winter book.

5 out of 5 stars The Joy of being a Little Boy.......2007-06-29

"The Snowy Day" was the first book written by Ezra Jack Keats (formerly Katz). It was the winner of the Caldecott Medal in 1963, was cited by the NY Public Library as one of the 100 most influential books of the 20th century in 1996, won a citation from the Brooklyn Art Books for children in 1973 and was chosen by the US State Department for its Touring Collection in 1971. The author Keats grew up in Brooklyn and changed his name from Katz to Keats after World War II. Because of the discrimination he faced, he became the first American picture book maker to give a black child a major role in children's books and literature.

Keats was inspired to write this book and develop the central character of Peter (a boy in this book about four) because he had become so enchanted with a photograph of a small boy in Life magazine. He cut out these pictures and put them on his studio walls. This boy in the magazine developed into Keat's character named Peter. Peter would become the main character in six more books until he was portrayed as a young adolescent in "Pet Show".

This is a lovely book which has Peter waking up to a "world of snowy white" delighted with the new snow and his day of playing with snowballs, making snowmen and angels and dreaming of another new day (although he feared that the snow would have melted over night). To Peter's delight, he woke up on the second day to even more new snow. The book is delightful. I loved the part where Peter, just being filled with the joy of being a little boy, tried to capture the day and the snow by putting it in his pocket so that he could take it inside when he has to go into his house.

Keats writes, "Before he got into bed, he looked in his pocket. His pocket was empty. The snowball wasn't there. He felt very sad." What a delight when the little boy is once again filled with joy the next day discovering that the snow is still there as well as some new cover.

This is a wonderful book to experience for any young child. Keeping that wonder alive in a child so that they look at the world with the eyes of Peter embracing each new day is awesome. There are lessons to be taught in the book as well about diversity, friendship, hope, love, being patient about growing up and being able to enjoy the moment and seize the day.

Keats summed up the purpose for writing this book and series with this statement: "Just to get the feeling of this wonderful little boy. I wanted to convey the joy of being a little boy alive on a certain kind of day - of being for that moment -The air is cold, you touch the snow, aware of the things to which all children are so open."

A very sweet book.

The Snowy Day

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Favorite at our House.......2007-04-15

I recently bought this for my 2 year-old son, and he immediately fell in love with it. It's a lovely little story about a relatively uneventful day in the life a young boy. It perfectly captures the mood of the first day of a major snowfall-quiet, magical, and peaceful--even in a bustling urban environment. It's amazing how a story with so few words can so beautifully convey the spirit and wonder of the mind of a little boy. My son particularly loves when Peter knocks some snow on his head and when he tries to save a snowball in his pocket.

4 out of 5 stars good one.......2007-03-16

I don't like the prints and pictures very much. But my son doesn't mind. He likes it!

5 out of 5 stars Simple, very beautiful, wonderful for children and adults.......2007-01-22

There aren't a lot of books that both a little child and a weary (wee bit bored, perhaps?) adult can both appreciate. This is one. Keats understands how young children think, how they look at the world. When the young protagonist Peter sits in the tub and thinks and thinks about the day's adventures, I'm struck by recognition both as a parent and as a former small child. I've seen that faraway expression, that serious working through.

The deftness of the language and the beautiful illustrations humble me. The focus of the story and the things that fascinate young Peter also fascinate my little boy, who is 19 months old. He asks me to read this to him at least three times a night. And it's so wonderfully done, I don't even mind.

Whether your child is white, black, purple, green or checkered, get this book. This is a wonderful book.

Robert Frost's well-known poem takes on new life in its first picture-book adaptation. The poem--long appreciated for its strong rhythm and evocative images--leaves readers wondering, "Where was the man going on the darkest night of the year?" and "Why on earth did he stop by the woods in a snowstorm?" Artist Susan Jeffers answers these questions visually--the kindly older gentleman who narrates the poem stops his sleigh to feed the forest birds and creatures. He stops once more to visit his daughter and grandchildren, then is off again through a blizzard, with many miles to go before he can sleep. The silent beauty of a snowy night shines through Jeffers's artwork; the man's clothing and blanket are the only bright touches of color in the white and wintry world of the woods. This quiet yet powerful book has a magic all its own. (Ages 4 to 7)

Book Description

Ever since it was published in 1978, the picture-book presentation of Robert Frost's poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" has been an enduring favorite. For this special edition with a new design, trim size, and three new spreads, Susan Jeffers has added more detail and subtle color to her sweeping backgrounds of frosty New England scenes. There are more animals to find among the trees, and the kindly figure with his "promises to keep" exudes warmth as he stops to appreciate the quiet delights of winter. The handsome new vellum jacket will attract new and old fans as it evokes a frost-covered windowpane. This celebration of a season makes an ideal holiday gift for a child, a teacher, or a host.

This lovely book depicts a beautiful poem by Robert Frost. The pictures are beautiful. My 4 1/2 year old grandson has memorized the poem and loves the pictures. We keep it on the coffee table to celebrate winter.
Even the book jacket has a winter look and feel to it.

5 out of 5 stars Our family treasure.......2007-01-21

Every Christmas Eve, just after dinner, right before desert, one of my fantastic brothers-in-law would recite this poem, ever so dramatically, that you felt the poem come alive. Unfortunately, he passed away in Feb, 2006, and one of my nieces read the poem at his funeral.. So for Christmas, I decided to give everyone in the family - (or all the extended families) their own copy of the poem, and luckily, it was in this form of the book. Robert Frost wrote an amazing poem, and to me and my family - it just meant so much more.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as Fuzzy Bee or Squishy Turtle.......2007-01-05

This is another excellent cloth book for babies and toddlers but it doesn't have as many things to pull on or that stick out (which is what most babies enjoy the most) as some of the other cloth books like Fuzzy Bee and Friends or Squishy Turtle and Friends. My son also loves Fluffy Chick and Friends as well. If I had to rank the cloth books in order they would be: 1) Fuzzy Bee, 2) Squishy Turtle, 3) Fluffy Chic, 4) Big Rex, and 5) Snowy Bear. If you don't have the first four, I would get them first and get this book last when you are bored of the others. It is still a good book, just not as good as the others.

5 out of 5 stars Best baby book we have! You must get it!.......2006-01-21

I had been looking for a book to hold my 8 month-old's attention. The plain old board books didn't seem to do it. Enter the Roger Priddy books! This book is her absolute favorite - she can hold it because it bends and it's light, she loves to pat the various textures within the book, the cover is krinkly, she can put it in her mouth because it's a cloth book, and it's the perfect size. She reaches out for this book and prefers it over her whole basket full of toys! We also have Squishy Turtle, and are about to order the other 2 cloth books. If you love this book, also get Roger Priddy's books "baby touch and feel". We have Puppy Love and Zoo's Who and she loves them. They're just adorable and the best toy OR book purchase I've made yet.

4 out of 5 stars squishy turtle is better.......2006-01-20

My 3 month old is loving the Priddy books. Squishy turtle is brighter and seems to keep her attention better, but both are great.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, even for little ones!.......2005-09-06

My 4.5 month old daughter LOVES these Roger Priddy cloth books. She has this one, and Fuzzy Bee and Friends (her all-time favorite). There's also a turtle one, a T-Rex one, a chick one and a Rudolph one. The pages have different textures (for instance, the walrus tusks are shiny white fake-leather, and the puffin has a satiny wing), and she's very into feeling things now. The cover has a crinkly filling, too, which most babies I know can spend several minutes playing with.

The verses on each page are rhyming, which is fun for mommy, and helps baby learn the patterns words can make.

They say the books are surface wash only, but I've thrown them in the washer and dryer and they come out just fine. Good as new! Which is great, because after it drops on the restaurant floor a time or two, I can't really watch her chew on it. :-)

Rosamond's present slid off of her sled. Nate the Great walked to her house and noticed that there were 6 cartons of milk on the table. Rosamond had only 4 cats and each cat drank a single bottle of milk. What could the other 2 bottles be for? Nate followed the tracks from Rosamond's sled in the snow. This led him to a tree by the tracks. He looked up into the tree and found his present, a cat named Super-Duper Hex. You will enjoy this book if you like Nate the Great. I liked it because it was a tricky mystery to solve.

The second story in this book isn't bad... but the first one is really predictable. You know exactly what's going to happen from the very beginning, and the only reason to keep reading is to see if it's as bad as you think. Debbie Macomber's more recent books are much, much, much better. You can tell this was an early effort and it doesn't live up to what readers expect from Debbie Macomber. I love her later stories... but this one, skip.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Christmas Tale.......2004-12-30

Cute holiday romances. The Christmas Basket made me laugh out loud.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Holiday Reading.......2004-12-22

_On A Snowy Night_ contains two short stories that were originally novels -- "The Christmas Basket" and "The Snow Bride". You can look up both these titles to get an idea of the plot for each. This book woudld make a fabulous holiday gift for anyone you would like to introduce to Debbie Macomber, or it would be nice to have on your own shelves if you missed the full-length versions of these stories.

4 stars -- The Christmas Basket is the more entertaining of the two, but the humor in The Snow Bride makes up for its blandness. Getting two for the price of one is not such a bad deal either!

5 out of 5 stars Great for the Kids!.......2005-08-27

I've really enjoyed the artwork and illustrations that Mr. Scherer did for other children's books, but I'm even more impressed that he has ventured into authoring books as well. I deal with kids at all levels of maturity and development, and I think this book is outstanding for helping young children learn basics such as names of animals and articles of clothing. The idea of cooperation and working together to build the snowman is an adorable added touch!

5 out of 5 stars A Good EFL Story.......2005-01-25

This is the story of several forest animals who build a snowman. Each animal finds something needed. Then they roll and pile the snow. Each animal contributes what they found to make all the parts of the snowman. At the end they toast their new friend with cups of hot chocolate.

As an EFL teacher, I find this book very useful with its simple and limited language to teach animal names, the names of clothing, body parts and colors. The children love the story and it's easy to follow up with a fun role play. The story is age appropriate for elementary school children beginning to learn English.
