This work is interesting enough for its history. Completed in 1940, Long Day's Journey Into Night is an autobiographical play Eugene O'Neill wrote that--because of the highly personal writing about his family--was not to be released until 25 years after his death, which occurred in 1953. But since O'Neill's immediate family had died in the early 1920s, his wife allowed publication of the play in 1956. Besides the history alone, the play is fascinating in its own right. It tells of the "Tyrones"--a fictional name for what is clearly the O'Neills. Theirs is not a happy tale: The youngest son (Edmond) is sent to a sanitarium to recover from tuberculosis; he despises his father for sending him; his mother is wrecked by narcotics; and his older brother by drink. In real-life these factors conspired to turn O'Neill into who he was--a tormented individual and a brilliant playwright.

Book Description

Eugene O'Neill's autobiographical play Long Day's Journey into Night is regarded as his finest work. First published by Yale University Press in 1956, it won the Pulitzer Prize in 1957 and has since sold more than one million copies. This edition, which includes a new foreword by Harold Bloom, coincides with a new production of the play starring Brian Dennehy, which opens in Chicago in January 2002 and in New York in April.

5 out of 5 stars Great play, not for light reading.......2007-09-01

Eugene O'Neill's classic play, "Long Day's Journey into Night," is an autobiographical work that makes you feel immense pity for his family life. It's a great read, and wonderful to analyze! Just don't think that this will be a playful romp through the theater. O'Neill tackles a lot of heavy issues in this play and it can be difficult to read.

4 out of 5 stars Living death in the middle class.......2007-07-18

Starting in the 1600s, America was known as the place to make it big, where one could make a decent and happy living if one just worked hard. Whether contrasted to the chaos of Revolutionary France, the abject urban poverty of Dickens' England, the abject rural poverty of Ireland, the militarization of German society or the civil strife of Russia; America was heaven on Earth, a place where one could live the life they wanted. This image gradually wore away by the early 1900's, and this disillusionment was captured in work after work of American literature. The Great Gatsby unveiled the decay of the super-rich, The Grapes of Wrath showed the pitfalls of the rural farmer, Sinclair's "The Jungle" revealed the horrors of industrialized society, and To Kill a Mockingbird forced us to confront the horror of Jim Crowe laws. But no work so fully and so subtly attacked the everyday failings and desperation of middle class America until this short classic by Eugene O'Neill. This story has no true protagonist or antagonist. Instead, it examines one middle-class family, the Tyrones, over the course of one day. The Tyrones live in their own house, and are financially independent. The parents are middle-aged. The husband is past his prime earning years, and his wife, Mary, is addicted to snuff. One son is an alcoholic womanizer, and the other is frail and probably a nervous wreck. Nobody is in danger of starvation or eviction, but the family as a whole has problems, with depression probably being universal. Everyone has personal failings that weigh on their souls, and each day is a struggle to get through without damaging relationships with each other. Hence the title of the book, a long day's journey into night. Night probably means death here, as noone in the family is going to die soon. The journey is the time they have to spend with each other and put up with each other. This fate, this tragedy probably afflicts more people around the world than any other, and that is to have to live with your failings and those of your loved ones. This book was published at the end of O'Neill's career, and is supposed to represent his family. Regardless of its intention, this is a great book, and of the few American classics that anyone around the world can understand.

4 out of 5 stars NO EXIT.......2007-06-24

I have written reviews of some of Eugene O'Neill's other plays elsewhere in this space. I have noted there that Iceman Cometh is my favorite for a variety of reasons, some of them political. Journey, however, may be O'Neill best play and not only because it is somewhat autobiographical. The trials and tribulations of a dysfunctional family that is ultimately clueless about solutions to what ails each of the four characters (father, mother and two very unlike sons)is very much the stuff of modern drama. The intervention of the gods would seem out of place here.

In O'Neill hands the tensions, misunderstandings and illusions presented are recognizable to today's audiences, even those who may themselves be troubled about finding solutions to some very disturbing problems. Althought this is a difficult play to read (and more difficult to watch performed)virtually everyone I know who has read and/or watch it has survived to the end. And was glad of it. That will tell as much as anything else that I could add that we are dealing with a master work of American literature. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars The Great American Drama of the 20th Century.......2007-06-14

I recently re-read "Long Day's Journey into Night" on a vacation flight and was surprised to find how well it stood up in my second reading.

The first time I read the play was when I was in my late teens and I could easily relate to melancholia of Edmund.

With age and time, I am less melancholic and perhaps less Edmund-like but "Long Day's Journey into Night" is a wonderful play. The most personal (autobiographical) of O'Neill's work: it also is his most universal work.

On every page, the American Dream/nightmare comes through with a brilliance perhaps not equaled elsewhere.

If a professional or quality amateur production of this work is not readily available to you, I highly recommend you pick up a copy. Enjoy!

Simply said, the most beautiful American play of all time.

Book Description

Beloved and bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann writes terrific edge-of-your-seat novels of romantic suspense set in the world’s exciting danger zones and exotic hotspots. Now, in her new sensational novel, she comes stateside for her most action-packed adventure yet.

It was supposed to be a “dog and pony show”—an elaborate demonstration of SEAL rescue techniques—to celebrate a presidential visit to a California naval base. Professional, no-nonsense White House staffer Joan DaCosta arrives early to scope out the area. Assigned to be her SEAL liaison is Lt. (jg) Mike Muldoon, a born leader—strong, decisive, tough, and fearless.

Against her better judgment, Joan finds herself drawn to the handsome young officer. Skilled at being “one of the guys” in the mostly male world of politics, she is dismayed when Muldoon breaks through her defenses. While tension mounts between them, fueling their growing attraction, a far more sinister danger is lurking, as terrorists plot a daring attack against the president. To protect their commander in chief, Joan and Muldoon must not only risk their hearts—but their very lives. . . .

3 out of 5 stars Not one of the best in the series, but still good.......2006-07-07

Book 5 in the series. And hmmm...I didn't particularly dislike this story, but I didn't exactly love it either. It was just sort of the next story in the series, containing needed details for book 6 to make sense.

In this one there is SEAL Mike Muldoon, and Joan DaCosta, a White House PR rep. SEAL Team Sixteen is to receive an award for the president so he is coming to the base they train out of, and since it is an election year, the White House wants to do it in public along with having the SEALs do a demonstration. Joan is the White House liason and Mike is the SEAL one. None of the SEALs are happy about the whole thing, some of them have a bad feeling that there will be a terrorist strike, but the White House won't call it off.

There is more of the Sam/Alyssa dynamic in this book, but thrown in Max Bhagat, FBI head of the counterterrorism group, to the mix. I love all three of those characters, so I enjoyed reading about them. Also part of the book is Mary Lou, who is in an unhappy marriage with Sam, and Ibraham Raham, the gardner in the neighborhood Sam and Mary Lou live in.

I think part of the problem with this story was that there were a number of characters that I didn't really like. Mary Lou is annoying as hell. I really could have done without, but unfortunately, she was entirely necessary to the plot. Joan really ticked me off at times. She was very patronizing and judgmental. Mike was kinda cool, but I've liked the other SEALs better. The storyline itself was fairly interesting, so that was good.

The historical section was subpar, in my opinion. It involved Joan's grandparents and how the met and got married. It just didn't have the meat of the other historical parts in the other books.

On a whole, it wasn't a bad book, just nowhere near as captivating as the others.

4 out of 5 stars Hillariously sweet.......2006-01-03

The story of Mike Muldoon was one that kept me laughing all thoughout the book. And there was sweet parts between Mike and Joan, as well as chummy parts between Sam, Cosmo and Mike. Mike was a character that I loved. It was a really good book in that it flowed really nicely and entertained. I also liked that we got to know a little more about Mary Lou and Donny, the crazy neighbor. Mary Lou was one of those characters who I had a little trouble liking in "Gone Too Far", although that book comes after this one, but "GTF" was the first in the series that I had read. I have also liked "Over the Edge" and I can't wait to read Cosmo's story, in "Hot Target". Very exciting. I can't wait til all the stories come into place as I chip away, one book at a time. Suzanne, keep up the good work.

2 out of 5 stars Annoying interplay between characters & boring plot.......2005-09-29

I've just started reading Suzanne Brockmann's SEAL books & am jumping around (rather than reading them in order). I really enjoyed her most recent releases but found this novel annoying in its unlikely character interactions, less than sympathetic treatment by the main characters of Mary Lou, & unrealistic racist reversal of said Mary Lou.

You'd think someone in their little tight-knit world of heroes would admire such a YOUNG person who has stayed sober for 18 months, taken on the significant responsibility of child-rearing & trying so hard to fit in. That some sense of compassion would compel the wives & girlfriends (not to mention the husband) to do something other than sneer, etc.

With that said, I found it politically correct but highly unlikely for such a young, screwed-up-life-character like Mary Lou to magically see the light & have mushy feelings for a non-white man - regardless of how nice he was compared to her hero husband, that jerk Sam.

I read the book primarily to move onto the next one & hoped like crazy Mary Lou wasn't going to be killed off. I was definitely not rooting for that loser Sam and his perpetually angry un-girlfriend to connect.

As for Joan & Mike - the potential was there for some interesting stuff but too much energy was expended elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Weak heroine takes away from the story's appeal.......2005-08-30

White House PR-rep Joan DaCosta arrives in San Diego to prepare for the president's arrival. Dashing Lt. Mike Muldoon is assigned to show her around, and they instantly start flirting.

Mike is not really at finessing with the ladies. Though he spent his youth as a self-described "fat math geek," he definitely grew out of the phase. The major stumbling blocks in their romance is the 7-year age gap. She is afraid to date a 25 year old guy, but has no problem setting him up with the president's troubled 40-year old daughter. The whole age gap thing was kind of beaten to death in Meg & Nilsson's story, "The Defiant Hero."

Muldoon tries his nest to pursue the elusive Joan, and at one point, this reader thought why bother? As a heroine, Joan just did not jump off that page - she was a bit bland. We had to wait so long for them to get together, that it was not too satisfying. I thought Mike deserved better.

Further adding to the plot is the growing friendship between FBI agent Alyssa Locke and her box, hostage negotiator Max Bhagat. It is misinterpreted as a romance by Sam's team, and Alyssa and Max perpetuate it to force Sam to keep his distance, since he chose a loveless marriage over the supposed love of his life.

The thing that saved this book for me was the terrorist plot to assassinate the president. Unfortunately, it was so secondary, that it really only garners a handful of pages. Sam's wife Mary Lou plays a significant yet unwitting role in the plot, and she slowly starts to melt away at her own prejudices when she falls for an Arabic gardener.

While it kept my attention the whole time (okay, except for those grueling WWII passages), this was not one of my favorite SEAL novels.

3 out of 5 stars The subplot is the best plot here.......2005-01-13

I wouldn't believe it if someone had told me, oh three books ago in this series, that I would be saying "thank goodness for Mary Lou." But while reading this book, that was totally my feeling.

So far, I think this is the weakest of Suzanne Brockmann's very fabulous Navy Seal Team 16 series.

First, I hated Joan. I am sorry, she just did not resonate with me. She was too everything. Too slick, too loud, too sarcastic, too mouthy etc.

Second, I didn't think she and Mike had any chemistry whatsoever. So far we've had some excellent matches whose chemistry just leapt off the pages (Teri/Stan, Tom/Kelly, Nils/Meg and of course Sam/Alyssa) but this one just wasn't working. I kept wondering why he liked her so much. It totally took me out of the story.

Third, the flashback storyline wasn't even interesting at all.

But this book isn't a complete wash and that is all due to what I like to call the Redemption of a Former Seal Groupie named Mary Lou. If you are a die-hard Sam/Alyssa fan, as I am, then Mary Lou is on par with Voldemort in the Harry Potter books. She got knocked up on purpose to grab Sam just as he and Alyssa were finally, finally! getting it together. She has problems with interracial romance, she's a whiner and full of self pity. In short, she was a useless individual and nothing more than a roadblock to Sam and Alyssa's true love. But in this book SB delves under the skin of Mary Lou and we find a flawed, three dimensional character.

Mary Lou does what is necessary to make a good character. She grows. She knows her faults, she's not apologetic but she tries. She soul searches and she finally comes to the realization that you can't make someone love you. I actually went from actively despising this character to liking her. Her struggles and the subplot of the assasination attempt were what made this book even remotely readable.

Read the Mary Lou/assasination plot parts, ignore the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Night/Dawn/Day.......2006-04-11

This was one bound volume of Wiesel's first three books, which concern the Holocaust, survival, and humanity. Night is Wiesel's personal memoir, which relates his personal story before and during World War II, as he and his father are separated from his mother and sister and interned in a series of concentration camps. Dawn is the story of a member of the movement to free Palestine from British occupation and Day concerns how one could move from a past that consumes one's every thought (or even if one should).

Quote: "Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never."

I read Night in high school, and always think of it as being a particularly long book, which it is not. Wiesel manages to pack more than I would think possible into a little over a hundred pages, which relates the story of himself and his family during the Holocaust. It is a beautifully written work that relates a terrible story. I found the story of Wiesel's loss of faith and the relationship he had with his father particularly memorable. If you somehow missed this in high school, pick it up, if you didn't, find it again. It's worth it. Dawn and Day are not as catching as the first work, but are still interesting in their own way.

5 out of 5 stars The Fire! The Furnace! Look, over there!.......2000-06-01

The cries of a madwoman on an Auschwitz-bound cattle car are just one of many portents shepherding doomed souls on their way to Nazi furnaces. In "Night", the first of three books in this collection, Elie Wiesel recounts his deportation to the death camps where the rest of his family perished. The tragic weight of his witness to this obscene cruelty burdens the reader with the fates of the inmates and his reflections on the meaning of evil. Wiesel questions his god and his faith. He sees sons kill fathers: "Meir. Meir, my boy! Don't you recognize me? I'm your father... you're hurting me... you're killing your father! I've got some bread... for you too... for you too..." (p.106), and becomes intimate with death.

In "Dawn", Wiesel has migrated to Palestine and faces the duty to execute a captured prisoner. His long night of contemplation and uncertainty exposes his preoccupation with killing and killers and again with death: "Death," Kalman, the grizzled master, told me, "is a being without arms or legs or mouth or head; it is all eyes. If ever you meet a creature with eyes everywhere, you can be sure that it is death." (p.140). It is a preoccupation to be squeezed only from one who has not fully lost his faith or his humanity. A beggar explains the face of the night: "Listen," he said, digging his fingers into my arm. "I'm going to teach you the art of distinguishing between day and night. Always look at a window, and failing that look into the eyes of a man. If you see a face, any face, then you can be sure that night has succeeded day. For, believe me, night has a face." (p.126) Fear, night, suffering, and evil are his companions, and he explores them constantly. "Being afraid is nothing. Fear is only a color, a backdrop, a landscape." (p.174).

Until, in "Day", he survives a terrible accident and is faced with his own complacent acceptance of mortality. He struggles with the urge to explain to his talented young doctor the futility of fighting against death, and reaches an epiphany when he understands the tragedy of splashing others with his suffering. "Suffering brings out the lowest, the most cowardly in man. There is a phase of suffering you reach beyond which you become a brute: beyond it you sell your soul - and worse, the souls of your friends - for a piece of bread, for some warmth, for a moment of oblivion, of sleep." (p.247).

These stories are powerful and frightening,. Death is an implacable enemy, but also a partner for life who never goes away and will always win in the end. Wiesel has stared at evil, his stories are wrenching.

Book Description

Bestselling author of The God Chaser series and renowned Bible teacher Tommy Tenney draws a clear map for turning your life around, unveiling the path to restoring our minds, bodies, and lives.Whether trying to recover from a past issue or dealing with a current problem, we've all made missteps or been placed in bad situations. Attaching faith to wrong things leads only to disappointment, while focusing on what really matters--faithful obedience--brings restoration. Helping readers do the right things with God's help, rather than obsessing on the wrong things, is the goal of Tenney's dynamic new book. Tenney offers solid practical advice for anyone looking for a way out of their problems and into victorious living.

5 out of 5 stars Most telling statements for today's Christian is to make sure to pass the test when it comes around a second time.......2007-06-06

Author and speaker Tommy Tenney invites readers to believe God to accomplish the impossible in their lives. Specifically, Tenney asserts that God can and will afford believers the chance for the ultimate comeback. It doesn't matter what setbacks a Christian is facing down; with God's enablement nothing is too dark, distressing or disabling for Him to prevail over.

Tenney forms much of his text around the biblical story of Elisha's servant, Gehazi, whose deliberate disobedience and greed ushered in the most hideous punishment of that day: leprosy. Ironically, this affliction was the very disease from which the wealthy Naaman (and from whom Gehazi illicitly stole) was just healed: "Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and your descendants forever." Writes Tenney, "...one error in judgment, one bad decision, and life as he (Gehazi) knew it was over." While Elisha pronounced judgment on his erring servant, God allows careful readers to watch as the drama of Gehazi's life unfolds over the coming years. Tenney continually challenges believers not to count Gehazi down and out, for God eventually turns the table and gives Gehazi another opportunity to redeem himself.

Tenney skillfully depicts the surrounding climate of the times and fills in the blanks so that interested readers can see how mistakes in error and judgment can snowball into a series of pain and suffering. While Gehazi failed at the outset, Tenney tells today's believer to obey God in all areas of life. Gehazi coveted the "blessings" of the good life but was willing to compromise truth to obtain it. Likewise, he exhorts readers to obey God, and thereby give God an excuse to bless. Lest some think that Tenney is pitching a formulaic, no-fail guide to "getting from God," the remainder of the text details how those who walk toward God will suffer along the way.

Asserting that God does His best work in secret throughout scripture, Tenney shares the unlikely coinciding events of Esther's strategic placement in the palace, Samson's inward character flaws and John Mark's inability to withstand the rigors of being a traveling evangelist. Yet God worked through these unlikely people, despite their fears and failings, and He made up the difference in every situation. Similarly, God used Gehazi's years as a leper to change and refine his character. Placed in yet another "tempting" position to profit by another's loss, Gehazi makes the right choice and God heals him.

In sum, Tenney shares that part of the process of making an ultimate comeback from financial woes, ill health or relational breakdowns is embracing the supposition that the "gift of failure" is one of the best learning tools in life. Writes Tenney, "failure is often the womb of success." He provides a detailed look at one of the most overlooked biblical characters and offers a fresh take on this man's mistakes, pain and eventual redemption. One of Tenney's most telling statements for today's Christian is to make sure to pass the test when it comes around a second time.

5 out of 5 stars All about forgiveness.......2007-04-12

Many times people believe that they have gone too far to be forgiven. In The Ultimate Comeback, Tommy Tenney masterfully weaves Biblical stories to show that there is not only hope for forgiveness, but also that your life, ministry, or marriage can be fully restored in time.

In the first three chapters, Tenney gives the reader a foundation that the Lord is very much in control on the situation, even when it doesn't seem like it. The first work that master storyteller Tenney weaves is a tale of what life must have seemed like for the almond branch that became Aaron's staff. One can fully identify with this poor branch that only wanted to grow up and produce almonds, and has instead been cut off, dried, and stripped of its bark. But the Lord had other plans for it. In the end the Lord's plans were so much more fulfilling than just producing almonds.

If the reader is not aware of the biblical story of Gehazi, the servant of the prophet Elisha, Tenney spends the bulk of the book recounting it: how greed got the best of Gehazi and how, because of that sin, the curse of leprosy clung to his family. Thankfully though, Gehazi's history doesn't end there, but mysteriously he is restored and given a new position in the king's court! How does that come about? Tenney draws upon many sources to come up with some logical conclusions.

Follwing are a few quotes from the book that are indicative of Mr. Tenney's ability to paint a word picture:

-- "Sometimes our ego can write a check that our character cannot cash."

-- "Anytime you "take" anything out of God's hands He will let you have it."

--"....failure is often the womb of success."

Armchair Interviews says: If you have questions about how much a loving God cares about you and your situation, this book is for you. This is truly a 5-star read.

Book Description

Long acknowledged as one of the most important literary figures in France, Marguerite Duras has garnered worldwide praise for her work, from the acclaimed screenplay Hiroshima Mon Amour to the best-selling novel The Lover. In this volume of four short novels, Duras demonstrates her remarkable ability to create an emotional intensity and unity by focusing on the intimate details of the relationships among only a few central characters: from the park bench couple in The Square (1955) to the double love triangle in Ten-thirty on a Summer Night (1960), each novel probes the depths of human emotion, of love and of despair. Exceptional for their range in mood and situation, these four novels are unparalleled exhibitions of a poetic beauty that is uniquely Duras.

Duras seems like the Simone Weil of fiction: her characters philosophize while they get undressed and into bed. While Duras covers the same material (man, woman, love, deceit) at least these are fine subjects in the hands of a master crafter. I don't think we can hold it against her for writing them over and over.

However, a crime takes place that could change the course of the holidays. But when all things are said and done, what could change the course of the holidays?
This short novella is one of the best writings by Duras. The way a short (and dangerous) romance is described could only have been done by her.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Duras.......2003-02-23

"10:30 on a Summer Night" is by far the best of the four novels in this book, focusing on murder and infidelity during a vacation outside Madrid. "Moderato Cantible" is good but not as intriguing as "10:30 on a Summer Night" and is about an alcoholic mother developing an odd relationship with a stranger in a café on the way home from her son's piano lesson. "The Square" has some good lines but is generally slow, focusing solely on a salesman and a servant talking in the park.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2002-05-10

The first story ("The Square")is a bit tedious (or maybe the significance was over my head). It's composed almost entirely of dialogue between two strangers who meet in a park and discuss their rather pitiful lives. But the three final stories are truly beautiful. The language is so vivid that even reading the stories on a cold Minnesota night I felt the urge to mop sweat from my brow. The third story, "10:30 on a Summer Night," in which a woman watches the sexual attraction develop between her husband and best friend, is incredibly poignant.

2 out of 5 stars I don't get it.......2001-05-02

Two of my closest, most intellectual/cultural-elite type friends have raved about Marguerite Duras. So I read "The Lover." Great story. Okay...they tell me "Moderato Cantabile" is her masterpiece. I search for an English translation, find this foursome. Terrific, I think, I can explore even more. I must ask the reviewers of this work...Have you read it all together???? Every story is the same, folks! This woman had one, maybe two stories (okay, Hiroshima Mon Amour makes three) in her blood. Take an alcoholic woman with a hidden sexual agenda, throw in an unfaithful (substitute uptight/unattentive, etc) husband...or father (oh yeah, don't forget the incest angle), then place them all in some tedious, drawn-out situation (aftermath of a murder investigation, waiting for a construction contracter, a storm, an afternoon on a park bench), then let them TALK. And talk. And talk. Get it? I may not be the super intellectual, cultural elite type, but I know pretension when I read it. Skip Duras. Or...better...read "The Lover," pretend you know all about her, and watch the others at a party try to impress you.

5 out of 5 stars Love these books, but...........2006-01-29

Linda Lael Miller has written a stunning series of novels featuring the vampire Valerian, his kith and kin. They are scary, romantic and great reads.
I do not like the trends of grouping previous books to offer.
Are there going to be more originals of this series? or was the last, where Valerian and his wife adopted a son, and his vampire friends daughter, a witch also married and had a child?
I know Ms. Miller reads her reviews.
Another Valerian, please?
If not, there are other excellent vampire sagas to pick up. But the Valerian series does have a flair.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous!.......2005-06-14

I really enjoyed Out of the Shadows, but Miller is even better here. Both if these stories are splendidly done, with warm, likeable characters -- who doesn't adore Valerian anyway -- and just the right amount of suspense. Be sure you read Out of the Shadows ((Forever and the Night & For All Eternity) first for important background. You can enjoy these without doing so, but it will definitely heighten your enjoyment of this duo. This book contains two of the best vampire romances anywhere. Read up!

5 out of 5 stars I want MORE!..........2002-11-08

Oh, were do I begin? I have read the whole collection of these tantalizing vampire books in one month. Miller's writing style is elegant and smooth making the pages flow one after another. In this book, Valerian is seductive, vulnerable, and real. My heart hurt for him as well as sang with his. I did not care for his 20th century love, but all the rest were very believable and the first........wow. I recommended this book to every person looking for a new read. I am a F 31 and never had read a vampire book before. I strongly recommend waiting to read this book until you have read the first book with Adian, talk about yummy! All the men & women are beautiful, regal, and sexy.... in a vampire way. I miss not having another of these books to read. But I will await and pray Miller keeps going in these vampire sagas. You will love Valerian from the beginning! All of Miller's characters have become part of my family.... all with a few secrets and all with more to tell!

Book Description

An infant who wails deep into the night, a toddler who keeps popping out of bed, a young child who procrastinates long past his bedtime - does your child's behavior give you nightmares? Many kids seem programmed from birth with bedtime behavior that frustrates and frazzles parents who have difficulty ignoring a baby's cry or who feel guilty enforcing an early curfew for a child they haven't seen all day. Yet getting sufficient sleep is critical for children's health and happiness. With humor and empathy, child psychologist Dr. Patrick Friman outlines the problems related to bedtime for children from infancy through middle school and gives you advice and tips on how to handle them. In many cases, he provides several options so you can choose the approach you feel most comfortable with. His suggestions can help end those bedtime hassles and get you and your child the good night's sleep you both need!

4 out of 5 stars Was helpful to us.......2007-02-12

We used this book for tips for our 17 mo. old and 31 mo. who both went from going to bed like angels to having fits about it overnight, and both decided to do it at the same time.

Most of the info for the age groups we were looking at was common sense. But it was good to hear it again from someon who was an expert and wrote in a fashion that did not talk down to you. Very helpful for weary parents to hear.

We also use "The Sleep Fairy" by Janie Peterson. We got the books separately, but Dr. Friman also recommended this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not very helpful for infants.......2007-01-10

I didn't find much usable information in this book. It basically said I can let a baby cry a little or cry a lot, but didn't give me any good steps for teaching him how to get to sleep and stay asleep on his own. I've since read a much more helpful book titled, "The Baby Sleep Solution" that does give good, concrete steps to follow.

3 out of 5 stars Good book - but not exactly what I needed.......2006-11-10

This book gives lots of good information - most of it is probably common knowledge - but as a parent it's always comforting to hear the experts tell you it's the right thing to do. Although for my specific circumstances this book wasn't exactly what I was looking for. But the information was worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Enthusiastically recommended for parents or caregivers of young children, and also an excellent baby shower gift.......2005-09-11

Clinical Professor of Pediatrics Patrick C. Friman, Ph.D. shares his wisdom with sleepless parents in Good Night, Sweet Dreams, I Love You: Now Get Into Bed and Go To Sleep!, a simple guide for anyone having problems getting their children to go to bed. Chapters cover specific issues with helping children from infants to toddlers, preschoolers, elementary schoolers, middle schoolers and beyond. Written in plain terms, Good Night, Sweet Dreams, I Love You emphasizes the importance of building good sleep habits, and warns parents that children of all ages are always learning - and therefore responding to their excessive crying, defiance, attempts to leave the bedroom, and other activities with an abundance of warmth or gentleness will create positive reinforcement for the negative behavior of resisting bedtime! Good Night, Sweet Dreams, I Love You walks the reader through time-tested procedures to help children get their sleep, including "cold turky" and graduated methods for tuning out nighttime crying, and the "robotic return" method for dealing with a child who wanders out of bed (return the child silently and emotionlessly and say nothing, so as not to associate comfort or other positive responses to a child deliberately leaving the bedroom). Above all, stresses Friman, the parent must remain in control and not negotiate, discuss or argue about bedtime with a very young child; children need rules, limits, parental authority, and sleep at an early age. A brief discussion of problems such as bedwetting, night terrors, or sleepwalking rounds out this straightforward, problem-solving guide, which points parents to a list of resources for further reading as needed. Enthusiastically recommended for parents or caregivers of young children, and also an excellent baby shower gift.

5 out of 5 stars Cute Book.......2007-01-08

This is a very cute book for small children and those beginning to read. Makes a wonderful bedtime story when it is late and there is no time for a longer one. My daughter loves it.

This book is great. It's easy to read, and very cute. I think it's a great beginners book.

5 out of 5 stars Best kids book EVER written hands down!.......2002-12-07

This was the book I learned to read with. It is still my favorite, even though I am now 18. I buy it for ALL baby gifts. No words can describe how fun this book is. MUST BUY!!! :)

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't live without it!.......2001-07-14

Just as a previous reviewer stated, I am ordering a second copy of this book. I bought it on a whim when my son was 6 mos old. He's a little over two now and still wants this book read EVERY night as part of his routine.

The big pictures and easy words are a great learning tool. It's just enough to stimulate interest but not overstimulate. The length is pretty good too.

Definately worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars We love Sleepy Dog.......2000-01-09

Sleepy Dog has eased our child into bedtime every night for over a year. The book contains recognizable subject matter for even the youngest of children. It even brings up a nightmare in a very lighthearted way, so as not to frighten children. This book has prevented our child from ever having a traumatic bedtime experience. Thumbs up!

    Book Description

The three plays gathered in this volume are among Bertolt Brecht's most remarkable; the best-known is Jungle of Cities, here translated by the poet Anselm Hollo. Set in Chicago in a climate of rampant capitalism, it is the story of a savage battle waged between two men, whose relationship is at once homosexual and sadomasochistic and whose tightly choreographed hostility is a metaphor for their cultural surround.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful poems!.......2003-11-03

A hardcover book with terrific drwings and wonderful short poems. Here is the intro to the book:

"Sleep magic is one of the gentler arts practiced by American Indian poets and song makers. Special combinations of words, called charms, are calculated to make people drowsy. Sleep songs, special words set to music, are meant to have the same effect, usually upon the very young and usually at nightfall. Native American traditionalists know that night is a time for healing, a time when plants grow, and a time for creative awakening - all of which may take place during sleep. Each of the night poems and sleep charms in this book has a definite purpose: to soothe, to heal, to bring dreams, or especially, to make sleep irresistable."

The poems are all short, 3-5 lines each. Here's one called Gray Mouse:
    Gray mouse came at nightfall,
    Gray mouse came at nightfall,
    Came running in the darkness,
    Came breathing in the darkness.

I just love this book! The poems are so simple, like haiku, yet the conjur up neat images. Some are funny images too. All have nature as their theme, all are soothing and comforing. There are poems (like Gray mouse), sleep charms/songs, and night prayers. Simply beautiful.
