Ohmigosh, what a book this is! We were lucky enough to get a sneak peak from Cherry Adair, and it blew us away! Of course, there was a little, minor tussle as to who got to read it first, but we emerged unscathed... mostly. This is the story of the enigmatic Kane Wright, one of those gorgeous alpha brothers and himself an undercover agent. All we can say - get ready for a one night read, as Cherry Adair takes you on a ride through the perilous Egyptian desert and a tempestuous romance fired by sexual tension. oh, and watch for the camel scene... you'll know the one we are talking about... ashamedly, we almost needed to draw ourselves a diagram to figure out exactly how AJ and Kane did it...

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2006-12-09

This is the fourth book in the Wright Family Series.
It begins with A.J. Cooper and Kane Wright's crew on an assignment to kill a terrorist. A.J. is the sharp shooter, but she freezes when the target is in her sights. Kane wants to get rid of her and send her back to the states.
A.J. is then kidnapped when they try to make their escape, so Kane has to rescue her.
A situation arises that makes them stay in the desert and hunt the terriorist down.
The story is so unbelievable that I had to literally force myself to finish this book. It was awful, the worst so far in the series.
Even though they were on the move to find the man who A.J. couldn't shoot in the beginning of the story, they were in no way taking the situation seriously.

1. A.J. froze and couldn't shoot the man, but the other operatives wanted her input on what they should do to find him.

2. In a sand storm instead of being on guard of any shooters, they climb in the back of the vehicle and take their clothes off.

3. Riding on a camel, the only thing they had on their mind was how to get intimate while riding through the desert.

4. The ending was so lame, Kane turned into a wimp and A.J. had to save him.

If you really want to read this book, I know it is a part of the series, but get it from your library, believe me it is not worth the money.

Cherry Adair has taken a series that started off good, kept you wanting to hurry and read the next book, and then it has gotten really stale in the last couple of books.

5 out of 5 stars Another very enjoyable read.......2005-11-26

FUN! FUN! FUN

I love the chemistry, the eroticism, the wit and the suspense. Very fun read that will make you want to come back for more.

4 out of 5 stars best so far.......2005-08-23

the best of the series so far. Her writing is subpar and repetetive "limp like an overcooked noodle" ..but the book was fun and definitely better than On thin ice , her latest offering which I find boring. what I liked about this book was the kick-ass heroine. what a refreshing change from the simpering idiots in the rest (Delanie being the worst).

2 out of 5 stars AJ stands for Angelina Jolie (the extraordinary Lara Croft)........2005-06-22

"AJ Cooper was a walking centerfold." She was a T-FLAC rookie, known throughout the agency as a First Class Sharpshooter. They pulled her out of boot camp because of her uncanny marksmanship ability. On her first assignment she missed, a clear shot and she missed her target.

"Kane Wright was everything she aspired to be." He was confident and self-assured. They knew him as 'a god' at the T-FLAC training academy. AJ Cooper worshiped the ground he walked. AJ wasn't familiar with disinterest or dismissal; unfortunately, Kane Wright radiated both in her presence. "T-FLAC is a hell of a long way from being a beauty queen."

Boy, am I GRATEFUL I checked this out at the library. Although I am a big fan of Cherry Adair's 'Wright Series', this entry was pure disappointment. It seems the quality, in the group, has diminished with each consecutive book. This entire affair felt, as if, Ms. Adair banged out the words to fulfil a contract. In OUT OF SIGHT, the reader finds mega-military action, unconsidered relationship development, and silly sex scenes.

Ah yes - sex. Sex sells.
First encounter: hot and heavy, in a moving elevator, minutes after HQ aborts their mission to ice a world-class terrorist.
The sex lasted 60 seconds, but. . . . "AJ had never had sex like that in her life . . . What do you get when you put two Type A personalities together? Nitro and glycerin."
Reader: MOAN.

Encounter: mind-blowing sex on the floor. . . . "His brothers would laugh their collective asses off . . ."
Reader: DON'T GO THERE.

Encounter: in a windswept HUMVEE vehicle . . ."while the wind howled long and low, outside thrumming sand; nature's fury raged inside the car and out." . . . "Why won't you hurry? Off, Off, Off! That's an order! Yes, ma'am. Her fingers encountered his roller-coaster-shaped zipper . . . Nice salute!"
Reader: GROAN.

Encounter: Our dirty, sand-crusted couple has a 'sex-while-riding-a-camel' adventure. "Kika, the camel, blinks her long lashes and starts to trot, forcing AJ to cry, "UNCLE" . . . Holy dromedary, Batman."
Readers: GROAN TOGETHER.

Encounter: The couple T-FLAC has sex just before 'their mark' schedules a world-shattering explosion; Kane utters, "Little thing like you, darlin' . . . Think you can take it? . . . . . . AJ whispers, "Try me."
Readers: AT THIS POINT, FORGET GROAN AND JUST SCREAM.

Oh, Cherry! Oh, Cherry!

And did I mention couple T-FLAC managed to save the President of the United States and the Queen of England from unspeakable death? Yup, they did, but only after they trekked 50 miles across the Sahara desert - trekked unscathed.

Oh, Cherry! Oh, Cherry!

When Jack Foley, a career bank robber, surfaces after tunneling out of a medium-security penitentiary in Florida, he comes face to face with Karen Sisco, a beautiful federal marshal. Though the barrel of her shotgun is pointed right at his face, she doesn't shoot, and Foley's accomplice, Buddy, overpowers her and puts her in the trunk of a car. Foley gets in with her and the car takes off, the escapee seemingly home free. In the cramped darkness of the trunk, the criminal and marshal find they have much in common and by the time the car reaches its destination, the two have become infatuated with each other. After Karen manages to escape, she and Foley try to reconnect outside the confining roles of kidnapper and victim.

Book Description

Jack Foley was busting out of Florida's Glades Prison when he ran head-on into Karen Sisco with a shotgun. Suddenly the world-class gentleman felon was sharing a cramped car trunk with a disarmed federal marshal—whose Chanel suit cost more than the take from Foley's last bank job—and the chemistry was working overtime. Here's a lady Jack could fall for in a big way, if she weren't a dedicated representative of the law that he breaks for a living. And as soon as she escapes, he's already missing her. But there are some seriously bad men and a major score waiting for Jack in Motown. And there's a good chance that when his path crosses Karen's again, she's going to be there for business, not pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good But Not As Good As Soderbergh Movie.......2006-08-02

If you have never read Elmore Leonard, this is a good place to start. A bank robber named Jack Foley escapes from prison with the help of his longtime partner Buddy. Federal marshall Karen Sisco attempts to stop the escape, but Buddy thwarts her attempt and forces her into the trunk of the getaway car with Foley. In the trunk, Foley and Sisco make a connection talking about things like robbing banks and movies. Soon, Sisco gets away, and the remaining story centers on Foley attempting one last job and Sisco trying to catch him (all the while dealing with the romantic and emotional connection that she shares with Foley).

The story is pretty darn good. And there is a wide range of characters with well drawn criminals ranging from silly, all talk screw-ups like a stoner named Glenn to a real violent, psychotic bad guy named Maurice. The dialogue is funny, and the very quick, clever twists of story/plot make the story a pretty good, engaging read.

This novel was later made into a movie by Steven Soderbergh. Even though the book is good, the movie is much better. While the tone and story are pretty similar, Soderbergh makes some welcome changes. First of all, the Leonard novel is told pretty straightforward. Soderbergh, however, mixes up the narrative using flashbacks that allow Soderbergh to develop the characters. Also, Soderbergh enhances certain scenes by adding suspense and humor (such as the climax that is really suspenseful and hilarious in the movie but by-the-numbers in the book). Finally, the film is shot well and features one great performance after another (George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Don Cheadle, Steve Zahn, Ving Rhames, Dennis Farina, Albert Brooks, Catherine Keener, Luis Guzman).

I don't know how Out of Sight made the New York Times bestseller list when it came out. This book could have been written by a high schooler. The plot is nothing to write home about and Elmore's writing style is sub-par. The book lacks suspense. I knew (and you will, too) exactly how the book was going to end about 10 pages into it. The book is also lacking in emotion and description. It reads like this: Foly said, "..." She said, "..." He said, "..." The she said, "..." Get the idea? The book is a very easy read that could maybe entertain you for the weekend, but don't expect to be wowed by "the best crime novelist of our time".

4 out of 5 stars My favorite Elmore Leonard book.......2004-10-22

This is my favorite Elmore Leonard book to date. now, i have only read three of his books, but I find comic crime novels to not be that interesting. However, I loved the movie and that that I should try the book. The book lived up to the hype. It had a movement that just flowed off the pages. The characters were well rounded, interesting and funny. You really felt the connection between Jack Foley and Karen Sisco, even though one was a bank robber and escaped convict and the other was a US Marshal. If you read just one Elmore Leonard book, read Out of Sight.

4 out of 5 stars From Florida To Detroit, Does Love Win?.......2004-05-26

Starting in a Florida prison, the opening few chapters of OUT OF SIGHT are set as a frenetic pace as bank robber extraordinaire, Jack Foley plans and executes a daring escape. Helping him in his bid for freedom is his former partner in crime, Buddy who is waiting with a car in the prison car park. Also waiting in the car park happens to be US Marshall Karen Sisco who is sitting in her car, preparing to enter the facility when Foley makes his unexpected appearance. Quickly overpowering her, they stuff her in the trunk of her car with Foley climbing in behind her and Buddy slipping behind the wheel to affect the getaway.

Unbelievably cool in the crisis involved in the jail break, Foley attempts to engage Karen in conversation, even wondering aloud whether it might be possible, if circumstances were different, for the two of them to become attracted to one another. Karen of course is incredulous and wants nothing to do with the escaped prisoner, apart from capturing him and delivering him back to prison. Thinking on the events later, after escaping from Buddy and Foley, she does find herself impressed with Foley's cool head under pressure.

There is a brief lull in the action as we recover from the excitement of the opening scenes and the thought of the next score is placed in Foley's head. This takes the form of a robbery target in Detroit, supposedly a low-risk venture made easier by some local help. After narrowly escaping capture from the US Marshalls that includes another run-in with Karen Sisco, he decides that it's time for a change of scenery and he and Buddy heads north.

By this time, it becomes obvious that there's some sort of weird fascination between Jack Foley and Karen Sisco taking place. They're somehow drawn to one another, even though they are on directly opposite sides of the law.

In Detroit, Foley and Buddy are out of their comfort zones. They don't know the city, they don't know the people and it's just started to snow. They hook up with a truly dangerous fellow ex-con named Maurice. He is their aforementioned local help, but they realise that the low-risk operation is shaping up as anything but. With nothing better on offer and against their better judgement, they go ahead with the plan but are extremely wary.

Meanwhile Karen Sisco has tracked Foley to Detroit after some very slick detective work, and after talking her way onto the Foley case. The inevitability of their meeting is obvious. What remains up in the air is what will happen after they meet and when it comes to plots created by Elmore Leonard, this means that the story could lead anywhere from here.

On the surface this is told in a light, breezy tone thanks mainly to the cool behaviour of Foley in times of crisis backed up by Buddy's comical acceptance of Foley's decisions, no matter how unusual they seemed. When the setting changed to the colder wintry city of Detroit, the tone darkened considerably to reflect the dangerous Maurice, with whom they have to deal. You get a definite sense that the significant scenes are going to take place in Detroit thanks to these strong mood changes.

Elmore Leonard mixes an easy conversational tone with tight, tough dialogue. He manages to give each of his characters their own distinctive voice thanks to his clever use of phraseology. Even though Foley and Buddy are ex-cons, in this book they can be considered the good guys and their language reflects this through a minimum of swearing and slang. In glaring comparison, we find that the Detroit "bad guys" such as Maurice, although also ex-cons, litter their dialogue with constant and extreme profanities. It's a simple but effective way to differentiate the difference between bad and downright evil.

Ultimately, OUT OF SIGHT is a love story. Sure it's an unusual love story in the extreme, but a love story just the same. With plenty of action taking place on the periphery of the Foley and Sisco mating dance, it's an absorbing book that provided me with an unexpected ending.

2 out of 5 stars Out of Sight, Out of Mind..........2003-03-28

This book was poorly written. Its plot was somewhat implausible and the characters were anything but dynamic. It seemed more like a screenplay thinly disguised as a novel, as it possessed very little literary merit. I would not recommend this book to anyone who values his or her leisure time.

2 out of 5 stars pathologically boring!!.......2005-06-24

This book is well written. But that's the only positive thing I can say about it. Of course, back flap texts are often too optimistic, but in this case, where the reader is promised much suspense, it is downright misleading. Basically, this book is about sickness; throughout the book the author goes on and on about the bad leg of one of the characters, the effects on health of invisibilty, medicines, hospitals, doctors, prescriptions, vitamin cocktails, etc., etc. Apparently, the author is obsessed by health and sickness, and treats the unexpecting reader to an quite hysterical overdose of it.

Apart from this, the book is extremely conventional, with a very weak plot. I have finished it, but it took an great effort!

Conclusion: not recommended at all!!!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-06-12

I read this because it won an Edgar; I love good science fiction but hate it when it's badly done, and I had some hopes for this. Unfortunately I was disappointed. The plot (invisible family fights to free other invisibles from a government conspiracy) had some potential. However the invisibility concept, so important to the story, wasn't well explained. In some chapters the invisible people could see each other more clearly than the visible world, but a chapter earlier or later they could only see themselves when wet and only "saw" each other through some poorly explained synaptic memory malfunction. I wasn't fond of the characters either, particularly the ridiculously stereotyped "shaman." Many of the problems could have been solved through better editing to catch the inconsistencies and irritating mistakes (like spelling archaeological site "sight"). As it stands, however, there are too many problems for this book to be enjoyable to read. Despite the award, I'd skip this one.

2 out of 5 stars Hmm, government conspiracy, secret lagoon, invisible people.......2004-04-07

Hmm, government conspiracy perpetrated by evil, power-mad scientists, secret lagoon in the everglades, a scientific process that creates invisible people (and one invisible dog) - I finished the book, but if I were you, I think I'd pass on this one. Unless maybe you are in middle school (kids might enjoy it) or you're a diehard conspiracy theorist.

2 out of 5 stars An Edgar winner for best paperback original.......2004-03-03

Logan and Tyler Griffin agree to become part of an experiment after being, what they consider, well paid for the risk. Unbeknownst to themselves, they will be turned invisible- apparently irreversible. The Townsend family are on a camping vacation in the Everglades. They stumble upon a deserted campsite with a lone dog as an inhabitant. A sudden light blinds them and much to their dismay turns them invisible, as well. The organization that is running the experiment wants secrecy at all costs- even if it means the lives of the Townsend family. The Townsends must flee from their unknown pursuers and eventually team up with Logan to fight this enemy.
Calling OUT OF SIGHT a mystery is open to debate. Invisibility falls much more easily into the science fiction genre. If the reader does not fully buy into the premise that individuals might be turned invisible, the entire book may not work. The fact that the book was nominated for a prestigious award is surprising considering how silly the basic premise of the book actually is. Mystery fans expect at least a semblance of realism. It is hard to get that in this sci-fi thriller. Besides, the pacing is relatively slow with a length that appears endless. A disappointing nomination in an otherwise impressive group.

2 out of 5 stars BLIND READER?.......2004-01-20

I have to wonder if I read the same book as other reviewers did. At any rate, I found this book one long, redundant mess of cliches, derivative plotting and characters. McGregor spends so much time rambling on about how each character feels being invisible to the point of where it's like come on, get back to the action. What little action there is doesn't compensate for the long, unimportant passages. Reni's character is especially whiny, and the character of Luis is so overboard, it's funny. First of all, why would anyone (even the Shaman and his friends) want to be invisible? What is the goal?
Dean Koontz does this kind of thing much much better.

      Book Description

Adrian Piper joins the ranks of writer-artists who have provided much of the basic and most reliable literature on modern and contemporary art. Out of Order, Out of Sight is an artistic and intellectual autobiography and an (occasionally scathing) commentary on mainstream art, art criticism, and American culture of the last twenty-five years.

Piper is an internationally recognized conceptual artist and the only African American in the early conceptual art movement of the 1960s. The writings in Out of Order, Out of Sight trace the development of her thinking about her artwork and the art world, and her evolving awareness of herself as a creative, racial, and gendered subject situated in an often limiting and always absurd cultural and social context.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond myths and beyond statistics.......2000-12-24

This is the product of six years of research and work with homeless rural children and families. But while Vissing does her homework and musters the facts, the book goes beyond the statistics. This is not a scientific study of a problem -- this is a person talking about people.

The book is full of photos: of children hungry; children playing; a pregnant young woman on a park bench; a mother in a homeless shelter cradling two toddlers close to her, with a determined look on her face; a teenage girl nodding off to sleep at a coffeeshop table with dawn lightening the window. Fourteen University of New Hampshire photography students worked with homeless children and families for six months in 1991. The results are incorporated into this book. Also available is a twenty minute, award-winning, videotape, "I Want to Go Home"

Just as the book goes beyond the statistics to show human beings suffering, it goes beyond the suffering to show solutions. Vissing spoke, in her initial study, with about three hundred people from school and community groups about programs to help the homeless. The first results were discouraging; for example, "Almost none of the communities had special summer programs for homeless children. I became convinced that 'homelessness' was not a term that most agencies used when serving children." But by the end of the book, Vissing has a program for rural communities to "'take the bull by the horns' and rely upon themselves to address the causes and consequences of homelessness." In the back of the book is a lengthy personal story -- fourteen pages -- of a child who grew up in poverty, abuse, violence and a rootless existence. Her story is searing and heartbreaking. But it has a very short postscript. ".. employed full-time and planned to attend college the following fall. Each member of the family seemed emotionally, financially, and socially secure, because of their own determination and because they had found help when they needed it."

This book vividly illustrates how our families and our communities have been shattered. It also vividly illustrates how they can be mended.

        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-12-25

I checked this book out from my local library. I read right after I checked it out. It is so good! I finished it in 1 hour. You will NOT want to stop reading this book once you start it. It is really sad, and it does happen in real life, but it shows you how to put up with it and make the best of a sad moment. This is an excellent book, and you really should read it. It also is humorous in some parts.
Plot: Abby's best friend, Jessica is visiting her father in Oregon, for three months! Abby is sad, and doesn't know what to do. Then, Abby says that she'll do Jessica's baby sitting job until Jessica returns-but things start to go wrong, very wrong. Meanwhile Abby has to plan for a school party, what will she do? Read this book and find out! It really deserves six stars!

5 out of 5 stars Anson Y.'s book review. HK. < Sad, sad, sad. >.......2005-07-24

This is the saddest book ever in the Abby Hayes books. But I give it a 5 stars because it's too interesting. If it wasn't written by Anne Mazer, I wouldn't want to read it.
In this book, it's about Jessica, Abby's best friend going to Oregan to visit her father. She would be there for 3 months! I know how Abby felt, MY best friend went away to stay at her grandparents at America. Now she had changed, just like Jessica.
Abby offered to help Jessica with her babysitting job, but bad things began to happen.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT JOB, ANNE MAZER!.......2004-04-09

This book was good, but not the best in the series. This one is about how, sadly, Jessica goes to Oregon to visit her father and Abby finds out that she is now a new person. Plus, she has agreed to help Jessica by doing one of her jobs for her while she is gone. But things go wrong when Abby forgets about it one day. AND, it seems like Abby is losing her friends, but Casey and Mason always seem to be her friends. Will Abby be reunited with the REAl Jessica? What will happen with her job? Will she end up being best friends with "Hoffman" and "The Mason Man"? Find out soon, get yourself a copy of this great book!

5 out of 5 stars This is the best!.......2003-02-18
