Book Description
This book is an entertaining and practical guide for every trainer and performance improvement professional as it tackles the three universal and persistent questions of the profession--how do learners learn, why do learners learn, and how do you ensure that learning sticks. This interactive book with it fun and breezy style illustrate the authors' point of view that learning should be active and enjoyable. Playful illustrations demonstrate the solid research that back up the authors' contentions and help readers separate learning myth from fact to dispel beliefs and practices that often harm the instructional process.

Well Done.......2007-08-15
Reading this book was well worth my time. The authors present academic concepts in plain english. They did a great job of shifting my training mindset from a focus on content to a focus on learning. They gave me many practical strategies for improving my trainings.
Best purchase for training EVER............2007-04-05
There are so many "how to train" products out there and most are so academic so as not to be practical. This book is easily understandable, fun and most of all, practical. I have already incorporated most of what I've read and have seen dramatic improvement in our new employees' performance. Reading this book was as comfortable as talking with a friend over coffee, very informal and very fun! Thank you!
Must Have!.......2007-01-23
This book is a perfect blend of theory and practical application in a compact package. Small enough to slide in a purse or briefcase, so you can take it with you when you need to brush up. Love it!!!
Telling Ain't Training - great tool for trainers.......2007-01-18
This book is a great tool for trainers. Not only does the book explain the dynamics of adult learning and training approaches, it provides 25 learning activities to help keep your programs interesting, fun, and productive. This met all of my expectations.
I've never read a more interactive book!.......2006-02-25
I have read a lot of books recently to increase my work knowledge, and I have to say that this book was the easiest and most fun to read. The writers have done an excellent job getting the reader involved, which increases the amount of information one is able to remember. This book is a real pionner in how to write educative books. Oh, yea, and the content was outstanding!

Great advice (if you can assimilate it).......2001-05-25
The problem with any "how to sell" book like this is, until you can integrate the advice given here so that it comes naturally to you, you will sound as mechanical and forced as some of the "tellers" Richardson criticizes. I used to sell big-tiicket business-to-business, and I can say the advice here is timeless: engage your customer, identify what your customer's needs are and position your product so that the customer realizes that your product meets their needs. Of course, if the customer doesn't need your product, then maybe you need to learn some of those "hard-ball sales" techniques (or find a better product!). No amount of customer empathy, listening, or product positioning will help you overcome a customer-product mismatch. Which brings me to a point: although Richardson argues against this, I think playing hardball has a place in negotiations; remember, the party you are negotiating with doesn't always have to feel warm and cozy inside in the process. A true persuader will know when to be soft and fluffy and when to apply the pressure.
Also, the whole paradigm-replacement languuage ("we are moving into a new age of selling...") is corny. The advice Richardson is giving is not new or revolutionary, as she claims. But she has succeeded in organizing a lot of really good sales principles in a clear and coherent way which can easily be appreciated by readers.
I read this book together with Richardson's "Selling by Phone" and frankly, one is just a rehash of the other. Richardson copied entire paragraphs from one in writing the other. So save your money and buy just one of the two. But if you are an accidental salesperson, or even if by trade you are not a salesperson but you are occasionally called upon to negotiate (maybe you are a lawyer or a manager) Richardson's books will be a refreshing introduction to the discipline of negotiation and persuasion.
excellent, customer oriented common sense.......2000-07-08
After reading plenty of those "say what I say, exactly as I say it" sales books, none of which I found truly helpful out in the field, this book was like a breath of fresh air. Easy to read and easy to adapt to personal styles it is a treasure trove of good advise. If you actually care about your customers and want them to return to you on a regular basis, this is the book for you.
should be a textbook for sales classes.......2000-06-09
From my many varied experiences, I realize that I just don't like selling, but when I was trying to bone up on my sales skills, I found this book to be the most useful. It is heads and shoulders above other books on the subject and it was so intersting that I probably read it cover to cover in a day or two. The advice is extremely practical and you are learning great principles of selling. You are not learning a bunch of closing dialogues that only work for the person who invented them. Easily digested, the principles allow you to adjust your approach in mid-sale because you are asking questions whose answers will tell you what you need to do or say next (positioning.) Tons of great info here. It should really be a textbook for sales classes.
Eye-opener and Instant Results Obtained.......2000-04-01
I manage a distributor sales force throughout the U.S. and Canada. After reading this book (actually WHILE reading this book) I applied the information and witnessed immediate success, as did my sales reps. The information is direct, common sense, well presented, easy reading and entertaining. It is not full of 'theory', but actual 'meat' that can be applied each day after reading even a chapter or two the night before. I am buying books for each of my reps and feel it is one of the best gifts I could ever give them. Well done!

Getting Clear.......2007-09-19
One of my best friends bought me this book after I sent her Jayme's online newsletter...pretty powerful newsletter, I'd say! I read this book daily now and cannot believe the content and context of the information it constantly imparts to me; it is enjoyable beyond what I could have believed. Every paragraph has so far resonated with me and is the direction I have been wanting to go; and now I know I have a scout who has gone out there and blazed this trail and come back inside to write about it! This is a generous woman! Having met Jayme at several yoga studio events, I know Jayme lives what she writes and has an energy of such integrity around her. For me, that counts for everything. The cleanliness, clarity, strength and beauty of this writing portrays who Jayme is, and I can't say enough about that level and depth of life. It is awesome to find it outside of oneself on the pages of a book as grande as this beautiful book is. She has excellent taste in real life (by the choices of her teachers and masters), in my opinion, and I am happy to turn the pages of this book slowly and deliberately and find support on "how to do a life well lived". This is the perfect book for me. Having just bought a new space in L.A., I will use this book to go forward on discovering who the new me is! Thank you, J. And thank you, Sydney, for the book!
I simply love it!.......2007-08-15
Covering the depth and breadth of feng shui from the inside out, Jayme's thorough understanding of energy makes my efforts fun and amazingly enlightening. Oh my gosh, it works! I gladly decluttered the other feng shui books and that silly money toad, and follow Jayme's teaching exclusively. I am thrilled with the daily insights as well as the infusion of revitalizing energy in my life. This is one of those rare, truly life-transforming books, and I'm a five-star fan! Thank you again, Jayme, for your beautiful, inspiring book!
This is useful when used in context.......2007-05-07
I really love the ideas in this book! I am a strong Christian, so some of the ideas are a little odd, but overall the book makes a lot of sense. Generally it will create negative energy if you stick your finger in an electrical outlet. A lot of the stuff is just common sense, but I really love the colors and the ideas they give on laying out rooms and putting your space together.
Excellent book.......2007-04-19
This book is an excellent beginner's guide to Feng Shui. It covers the bagua, and gives excellent tips on how to energize your space with things you already have. It also gives a basic space clearing technique. I recommend this book.
Inspiring.......2007-04-05
I have to admit it, I purchased this book mainly for the pictures. I find photos of well-laid-out rooms inspiring. HOWEVER, I am recommending this book because of its incredible CONTENT. Jayme Barrett lays the subject matter out so perfectly. It's like a step-by-step manual, only much more beautifully presented. Oh, and the pictures lived up to my expectations as well!

Want to learn how to speak the language of critters, large and small? Easy-to-read and understand, Ted Andrews's bestselling Animal Speak shows readers how to identify his or her animal totem and learn how to invoke its energy and use it for personal growth and inner discovery. Nature lovers will love this insightful compendium, chock-full of touching stories about animals, natural history, and animal folklore. Readers will also learn magical animal rites and how to read omens. Animal Speak includes a dictionary of bird, animal, reptile, and insect totems, which describe each creature's meaning. For example, if a person's totem is dragonfly, he or she was most likely excessively emotional and passionate in early years, learning with age to balance it with mental clarity and control. If a dragonfly suddenly shows up in your life, it means you may need to gain a new perspective or make a change. --P. Randall Cohan

Animals do indeed communicate information to us.......2007-10-02
This book was recommended to me several years ago, and since reading it I regularly refer to it as an informational resource. On many occasions I have been amazed at how relevant the information about a particular creature was to what I was experiencing at the time it happened to cross my path. I found Animal Speak to be of such value to me that I chose to include an excerpt from it within my own book. As such, I highly recommend it to any person who has interest in the spiritual path.
Animal Speak by Ted Andrews.......2007-09-26
Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small
Great book, I had seen Ted Andrews in person, what an incredible man. I already had so many books at the time, I did not buy it then and have him sign it. But recently it is the time of skunks and well, I have just seen/smell for several weeks. My friend has the book, and she read me the section about skunks, and it was amazing. how much of what it had to say about skunks, from strength, relationships, boundaries, sensuality, were the things I was looking at in my life. So I decided to buy the book after all, and it is a great thing.
Animal Speak Still Going Strong.......2007-08-11
This purchase was a replacement for an fifteen year old copy that I simply wore out. I bought the first copy when I met Ted Andrews in 1987, I teach neo-shamanism and suggest that all of my students have this book and it's accompaniment "Nature Speak." Ted is a naturalist and knows animals and nature first hand. He combines his knowledge with ancient and modern myth and lore to give us a comprehensive guide to how animals interact in our metaphysical world.
Fascinating Information about animal symbolism.......2007-07-31
"The most common belief in many societies is that spiritual guides often use animals or animal imagery to communicate their purpose and roles to humans." -From the book.
I was drawn to this book several years ago when I had a recurring dream about an animal and felt sure that there was an important message in it for me. I have used it several times since to look up the meaning associated with certain animals that came across my path. We may think that these encounters are random or coincidental, but they're not. Often we don't see signs that are right in front of us. Does it take a billboard to get you to take notice? For me, sometimes it does, but I have tried to slow down and pay attention to these subtle natural nudges because a lot of times, they contain a powerful message or just good advice! Just as symbols, seeing/encountering certain animals may, on the surface have no meaning to us, but our subconcious knows what it means.
There is a HUGE amount of information in this book. It is very interesting to read. In addition to finding out the meanings/messages of animals, it also tells you how to find out what your nature totems are and how to work with that energy.
In chapter 4 'Reading signs and omens in nature' there are charts for the meanings or symbolism of certain trees and flowers and the positive/negative qualities of colors.
Highly interesting book and great to have for reference.
All creatures, great and small . . ........2007-06-29
This was one of my earlier "special" books. My girlfriend, a Reiki Master, looked up spider for me. I think I had a dream about spider. One of those "insightfull" dreams. You know, the dreams that you just know are more than an ordinary dream. The info she gave me from the book really made me appreciate the spider and what it was trying to tell me. I got hooked, on both Ted Andrews' books and understanding about animals. I always liked animals, but I was a little picky on WHICH animals, and creatures, I liked.
Ted Andrews writes really great metaphysical books. He clearly knows what he's talking about and does his darnest to explain it all to you, with all the details, and in an easy to understand fashion. Besides the fact that it's easy to look up an animal in the book, he explains lots of other related stuff.
I use this book whenever an animal or creature seems out of the norm. Examples would be seeing a single crow over and over again, seeing an animal in some really unusual circumstances, dreaming about an animal, especially if the dream is different. You know a "different" dream when you have one. Maybe you are half asleep/half awake and see a wolf looking directly at you and his eyes are glowing and you sense he is telling you something.

Does this come with both the book AND cards???.......2007-07-07
Everyone seems to refer to the cards as well as the book. But according to the product detail, it only refers to the book. Please let me know whether this one (# ISBN-10: 0312204914 # ISBN-13: 978-0312204914; List Price: $29.95 Amazon Price: $19.77 ) includes the cards as well as the book. Thank you.
something about it.......2007-04-10
I use these cards often, along with Angel Cards and the Tarot, depending on the kind of help I need.
I have an affinity with them that I can't explain and I am always in awe of the answers I receive. The book is well written, there is no ambiguity and so I recommend it.
love new additions.......2007-03-31
I have used the medicine cards for years and love the new cards that have been added.
These cards are fantastic...........2007-03-12
If you relate to and care for animal life as I do then these cards will be a rich addition to your collection....I have them , use them and love them. They are great and you will learn much from them too. I recommend these to anyone that is searching and who relate well to animals and the creatures of this earth. Fantastic cards.
Book Description
We don't usually identify with the author of a great story. Instead we bond with the hero and heroine-the ones that the story is
about. We share in their heartaches and triumphs. We cheer their accomplishments and mourn their losses.
When we think about our own story, we may see God as the author-an omniscient and omnipotent cosmic mastermind-but fail to recognize Him as the central character. In
Epic, a retelling of the gospel in four acts, John Eldredge invites us to revisit the drama of life, viewing God not only as the author but also as the lead actor, exploring His motives and His heart. Eldredge examines the power of story, the universal longing for a "plot" that makes sense deep inside us, our desire for a meaningful role to play, our love of books and movies, and how all of this points us to the gospel itself.
It's a story better than any fairy tale! Our human hearts are made for great drama, and the gospel, with its tragedy and grandeur, truly is epic. Also available as an unabridged audio on CD, as well as hardcover Spanish edition.

Haven't received it yet.......2007-06-01
I don't know why earning "free shipping for orders over $25" should be a penalty. It takes 4-5 times longer to get your order when you do this. I have not received this book.
Great book.......2007-02-22
This is a good book, easy to read, and short. Great as a gift, or for your own personal curiosity. We've given away several.
Life changing paradigm shifts.......2007-02-21
I first saw the DVD, which I recommend watching first and using the book to supplement. Eldredge offers three versions in DVD set--a short 37 minute version, an hour long version, and a small group study version that is just over 1 1/2 hours with commentaries if you watch all 6 parts at once. I highly HIGHLY recommend that the first time you watch it, you go ahead and commit to watching the study version all the way through in one sitting. I got several life-changing insights and they keep coming. After seeing the DVD, I wanted more and read the book. While the book doesn't have quite the same impact, it does offer a little more information.
I've been a Christian for 30 of my 36 years and this DVD (and book) impacted me more than any sermon I've heard.
The Prologue sets up the format. He presents the gospel as an epic--a story and gives us a larger view of Christianity and where we fit into it. It's SOOO not all about us, yet we are a valuable part of it, we have our role to play.
The first "Act" is Eternal Love. It made me see God's nature more clearly. Yes, God is love, as we have all heard. But understanding the Trinity love relationship helped lay a foundation for the overall insight of We can trust the heart of God. That we are invited into something good that already exists and offers a sense of belonging to something greater.
The second act "Entrance of Evil" reminded me that sometimes I forget and see the world (and thus God)as if there weren't a villian. I also see how his biggest lie (You can't trust the heart of God) was being perpetuated long before creation. It was effective with the fallen angels and I fall prey to it sometimes myself.
The third act is where creation began and we currently are. I've heard (even occasionally taught) that God loves me innumerable times. While I knew in my head that this was unmistakeably true, I never experienced it like I did because of this. "The Passion of Christ" gave me a glimmer, but this much, much more so. The way Eldridge describes creation and us made in the Trinity's likeness (an echo) made me feel Psalms 139:13 like never before. I've struggled with feeling valuable and this insight offered a sense of security I've had a difficult time obtaining. Despite what we do (the she-camel verse struck my very heart), God still melts for us and pursues us, without force. Christ's life and death somehow seem more real to me. With love like this, I can trust the heart of God.
Act four talks about Heaven. NOT the typical (unfortunately) view of heaven and endless (i.e. boring) worship and praisefests. (Yes, we will worship God, but not just through song and church services in the sky) This presents a biblical view of heaven that really does sound like heaven. You really need to hear this, it's inspiring and exhilirating.
The Epilogue wraps it up and reasserts our place in the epic.
There isn't any way to convey all the ways or the degree how this DVD (and book) moved me and changed me. It's still happening. I find myself coming back to it again and again. I know Eldredge has written for men, I'm a woman and I don't think this is targeted just for men at all. I think it will speak most strongly to those who enjoy reading and movies a little more, just because he references so many. Each reference, if you're familiar with it, can evoke a feeling or situation in an instant that only adds to the message he is conveying. However, you don't have to know all the references to get an amazing amount out of it.
Good Sunday School Curriculum.......2007-01-04
I just completed teaching a Sunday School class using John Elderidge's Epic along with the DVD as a curriculum. The class was a cross generational men's group.
I must admit I was somewhat concerned about how this material would be received by the over 60 age group. My fears were unnecessay. The Epic served as a springboard for many good discussions. We discussed everything from relationships to the meaning of life. (You do encounter these topics when you ponder your role in the "Big" story.)
I was really blessed by the insights expressed by our group and came away with a greater appreciation for my seniors. The Epic also appealed to the younger members who could more easily relate to the media connections.
As some of the other reviews have pointed out, I agree that the Epic is not strongest work of scholarly theology. If this is your expectation then I would suggest you look elsewhere. If you are looking for a curriculum with broad appeal and is easy to teach this is just the ticket.
Good followup to Wild at Heart.......2006-12-01
I enjoyed as a followup. It helped keep my focus on another way of looking at situations. I think he may be onto something.
Book Description
Together in one volume for the first time, these are the classic texts that helped launch the modern Tarot renaissance. Often described as the Bible of Tarot readers, they bring awareness of myth and modern psychology to the Tarot's ancient symbolism.
Customer Reviews:
It's a powerful tarot reference no serious new age library should miss........2007-10-06
Tarot users will find SEVENTY-EIGHT DEGREES OF WISDOM: A BOOK OF TAROT a fine compilation of two previous volumes under one cover, joining THE MAJOR ARCANA and THE MINOR ARCANA in one revised, updated volume with a new introduction by the author. As such it's a powerful tarot reference no serious new age library should miss.
Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom.......2007-09-21
These days most anybody can do a tarot reading. There are literally hundreds of different decks all complete with canned readings for each card. In a way, it's rather like reading your daily horoscope as the results are rather generalized to match virtually anyone.
Definitely, not every tarot reader is equal in quality. The best readers go beyond simplistic generalizations. They not only tailor their layouts and reading results to match the individual but also look to the deeper meanings of the cards. These unique abilities are both invaluable skills and amazing talents.
Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom is a must have resource for anyone wanting to do real tarot readings. The author has an inherent ability to see depth within the cards that many need to be taught to notice. Within this book, she shares her valuable insights and urges the reader to follow suit. Originally this book was two books separating out the major and minor arcane. This new format brings these important references into one easier to access resource.
Rachel Pollack Fan.......2007-07-31
I have this in Part I - Major Arcana & Part II Minor Arcana
I absolutely love Rachel Pollack's work & this is no exception
in fact it is my all time favorite book of hers.... I find
it's down to earth, to the point at the same time I know exactly
what she means about a card.......
Worth the money if you want help interpreting cards & like me
favor her work.
A Must for all Tarot Book Collections.......2007-07-30
I was once asked: "If you could only own one tarot book, which one would it be?" The clear answer is Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack. I have also found that this classic book works very well for my beginning tarot classes at the local University. Despite the author's indepth treatment of the cards (see other excellent reviews), tarot beginners enjoy the comprehensive, classic and clear insights into the tarot and how to work with it.
I would also like to say that my beginning and intermediate students enjoy Rachel Pollack's spreads also because of their depth of meaning.
So I sincerely recommend this for all tarot book collections and for students of tarot.
A Classic! .......2007-04-14
This is one book that I can't recommend strongly enough, and one that I feel belongs on the shelf of every Tarot enthusiast. Using the popular Rider-Waite deck for illustration, this book contains essays on each card, covering all aspects of the symbology, as well as origins, history, mythology, and sociological, psychological, esoteric and religious implications. It's rare to say that a book on Tarot is a can't put down page-turner, but this one is it! I learned so very much from it, and use it as a reference to this day. Be warned, however, that this isn't a book that you would want to use to look up cards during a reading. Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom is very well written and easy to understand, no matter what your level of expertise. Ms. Pollack has obviously done massive amounts of research and manages to convey a true love for the art of Tarot on each and every page, speaking to the reader as a patient, knowledgeable and wise teacher with years of experience. She also includes tutorials in the back of the book, covering such subjects as layouts, the Tree of Life, making a Mandala, and Meditations. On the whole, this is a wonderful, wonderful book and in my opinion, a classic.

By popular demand,
Doreen Virtue has created a beautiful deck of cards based on her best-selling book Archangels & Ascended Masters. The deck includes gorgeous paintings of 44 male and female cross-cultural deities, such as Ganesha, Merlin, Saint-Germain, Apollo, Pallas Athena, White Buffalo Calf Woman, Jesus, Moses, Yogananda, Green Man, and Kuthumi. The enclosed guidebook gives expanded explanations of each card’s meaning, and a brief history of each ascended master. As with each of Doreen’s oracle-card decks, the messages for each card are positive, accurate, and life-affirming.

Not A Bad Card In The Deck!.......2007-09-08
These cards have a wonderful vibration, all very inspiring, uplifting, encouraging. However, they are not without depth; they are more than just "sweetness and light." There is a suggestion that they can be used in combination with other kinds of Tarot (that can carry the darker undercurrents--necessary energies to be aware of in their own right), and I find there is a good balance that way.
Love it - Accurate, Simple and Enjoyable to work with!.......2007-08-22
I bought this deck to learn more about the Ascended Masters and to begin to work with their energies.
I was actually very surprised to see that world deities are considered ascended masters, along with New Age figures such as El Morya, Saint-Germain and others. In fact, the world deities make up most of the deck. My one complaint is that I actually would have liked the inclusion of more of the specifically "New Age" Ascensionist Masters (I realize many deities have become central Ascended Masters in the Ascension movement, such as Kuan Yin and Buddha, and would not have minded them being included), and seen the world deities go into a completely seperate deck. I was a little dissapointed, because I really did want to learn more about them through this oracle.
Other than that, I love this deck! Like her Goddess Oracle, I found the readings to be extremely accurate right from the get-go. I use these cards along with the Goddess Oracle to get an extremely well-balanced reading - in the accompanying book it gives a very simple method for using multiple oracle decks for one reading, which I recommend everyone give a try.
I would love to see an "expansion pack"-type deck for this one made that focuses more specifically on the New Age Ascended Masters, including the more intergalactic figures such as Ashtar. I feel I could really learn alot from such a product, and that was the original intent of purchasing this one. However, as a lover of world spirituality, it was fun to see many familiar faces in this deck, and to be able to to incorporate that wisdom into my readings and meditation.
Love Doreen Virture's Cards.......2007-07-27
I bought this deck to add to my collection of Doreen's cards. I have them all. These are as beautiful as the rest, I especially love the gold edges, however there are too many of the same cards from previous decks. The artwork is different but it's pretty much the same meanings. I was hoping for something new in this deck and it just doesn't have it. Even so, I will continue to buy Doreen's cards because I love the artwork in them and the positive inspirations.

Once again I am very pleased with my Doreen Virtue cards.
The cards are beaufiful to look at and the descriptions are very accurate.
Book Description
Every marketer tells a story. And if they do it right, we believe them. We believe that wine tastes better in a $20 glass than a $1 glass. We believe that an $80,000 Porsche Cayenne is vastly superior to a $36,000 VW Touareg, which is virtually the same car. We believe that $225 Pumas will make our feet feel better-and look cooler-than $20 no-names . . . and believing it makes it true.
Successful marketers don't talk about features or even benefits. Instead, they tell a story. A story we want to believe.
This is a book about doing what consumers demand-painting vivid pictures that they choose to believe. Every organization-from nonprofits to car companies, from political campaigns to wineglass blowers-must understand that the rules have changed (again). In an economy where the richest have an infinite number of choices (and no time to make them), every organization is a marketer and all marketing is about telling stories.
Marketers succeed when they tell us a story that fits our worldview, a story that we intuitively embrace and then share with our friends. Think of the Dyson vacuum cleaner or the iPod.
But beware: If your stories are inauthentic, you cross the line from fib to fraud. Marketers fail when they are selfish and scurrilous, when they abuse the tools of their trade and make the world worse. That's a lesson learned the hard way by telemarketers and Marlboro.
This is a powerful book for anyone who wants to create things people truly want as opposed to commodities that people merely need.

Perception is a powerful thing...play along with it.......2007-10-03
'All Marketers are Liars' is a provocatively entertaining book about marketing and human nature. Seth Godin has once again applied his reliable formula for publishing success:
1. Pick a traditional and well accepted marketing concept
2. Write about it from a totally new perspective
3. Make the book easy to read and include a lot of examples
4. Give the book an intriguing title
5. Sell a lot of books
In 'Purple Cow' the basic concept was differentiation (nothing new in itself, after all, people had been talking about positioning and unique selling propositions for decades). In 'All Marketers are Liars' Seth's premise is based on these two well established marketing concepts:
a) It is harder to make something and then try to sell it, than it is to first find out what people want and then give it to them.
b) It is very difficult (and expensive) to try to change people's perception once it is already formed.
The new 'angle' being explored, though, is that most of the time those perceptions are based on emotions that go against objective facts. The recipe for successful marketing, says Godin, is to find a large enough group of people with a particular world view, and offer them a product that caters and reinforces that world view.
Judging by some reader reviews, some people seem to have taken offense to Seth's thesis, implying that it encourages dishonesty in marketing. I don't subscribe to that point of view. Giving people exactly what they want, even though objective facts suggest that they should want something else is not being dishonest.
To illustrate Seth's thesis I'll give you an example: suppose that you have two identical watches, one of them is made in Switzerland and the other one is made in China. If you ask people which one is better, I bet that nine out of ten will answer `the Swiss watch'.
The objective of the Swiss watch maker is to sell watches. Are they supposed to go around telling everybody that the Chinese watch is as good as theirs? Of course not. The Swiss watch maker's advertising will most likely make extensive use of marketing signals that reinforce the world view of the nine people who picked the Swiss watch: their magazine ads will probably display pictures of their watch with a backdrop of a quaint Swiss village surrounded by the Alps and the Swiss cross prominently displayed somewhere on the page.
Now, if the Swiss watch maker decided to relocate their manufacturing plant to China and continued to use the same marketing signals in their advertising their customers would cry foul. If they also intentionally and openly lied about the country of origin of the watch they would be committing fraud. Seth Godin voices a strong opinion against these two scenarios, the first one because it would be "unauthentic" and the second one because it would be outright illegal and unethical.
'All Marketers are Liars' is a quick and entertaining read (you can probably breeze through it from cover to cover on your average plane ride) and it will leave you with a valuable takeaway on which to base your marketing strategy.
fun marketing.......2007-08-24
Such fun to read and all about story. This is a great read if you are marketing any product.
I dig this book.......2007-07-08
Great insight on consumer world views. Godin discusses how marketers can leverage those views to better align their intended audience with their product/service. He focuses on the psychosocial aspect of buying without being overly scientific. He gives good examples to support his points throughout the book - those that have succeeded and those that have not.
This is the second book I've read by Godin. He does a good job keeping a consistent theme and appropriate cross referencing between the two books (there are many others). Coming from a background other than marketing, I feel like these books are helping me (my business) grow as opposed to filling me with trivial information. It's more than just "closing the deal", or "getting the sale" type stuff. His theme is more in tune with developing a mindset based on successful product development and getting those products in the hands of the right people (sneezers, as he calls them). I will continue reading his material.
I do have one question. What are the opaque letters on Godin's head on the cover of this book?
Another good one by Seth Godin.......2007-05-30
The title is a little bit deceptive, it seems bitter and cynical at first. It's actually good sales advice. The basic premise is that people can better relate to a story than marketing hype. So, if you can describe the benefits of your offering in the way of an anecdote, personal experience or third party reference, then you will be able to enable your prospective clients to mentally 'try on' or visualize what you are trying to sell. Seth is a prolific writer who has great vision and foresight, he has been quoted in many other books and generously quotes other authors and great writings as well.
Its not the Marketers that are liars - its we the audience that do the lying.......2007-05-18
I'm a fan! I found Seth's arguement easy to follow and insightful. I normally would never rave about a marketing book. They are all to full of hip statements that really never ring true - just clever. Seth's words do ring true. The truth I found most true is it relates to how the only thing that matters in the current marketing scene is the "story". Once a good story is told the audience takes that story and makes of it what they need to be - this is the place where the lies get told.
My take away from this easy to read, straight up good book as someone developing a start up is - to be authentic is not to race to the middle but instead tell the story even if it pushes on the border. Tell the story loud and proud - but whatever - tell it to be heard.

Essential reading for serious writers.......2007-06-02
"Telling True Stories" belongs on every serious writer's bookshelf. Including insights from many of the luminaries in the narrative non-fiction world, it is not only an essential read for someone working in this field, but a lively and inspiring one as well. Highly recommended!
A rookie reporter appreciates guide to better story telling.......2007-05-08
"Telling True Stories" is 91 outstanding essays on what narrative nonfiction reporting and writing are and how to do both better. The book, described as "a nonfiction writers' guide," features many award winning reporters, editors and teachers who have presented during Nieman Conferences on Narrative Journalism and include Walt Harrington, Jack Hart, Tom French, Tom Hallman and John Franklin. The title could just as easily been "Telling True Stories Compellingly" for these essayists and others clearly describe how fact-based narratives, when employing the story-telling techniques described in detail, can produce truly memorable newspaper pieces, magazine articles and books. As a rookie newspaper reporter very interested in writing stories that will be read, this book is worth at least double the price - maybe triple.
Wonderful resource for a professional speechwriter.......2007-03-21
People love stories. I'm a professional speechwriter working in a large High Tech company. The essays in this book are a wonderful inspiration. I'm always looking for ways to move executive communications beyond PowerPoint slides and boring datapoints. Stories are a key way of engaging an audience. This book shows how the best stories are researched and reported; constructed; edited and published.
Example: Jack Hart's distinction between Summary and Narrative (p. 112) lists how the story emphasizes concrete detail (over the abstract); employs dialog; a specific point of view and occurs lower on the level of abstraction. These are all important points to remember when reviewing a speech or presentation for audience appeal.
Learn the elements of good storytelling.......2007-03-06
Want to write true stories that will still be readable five, 10, 20, 50 years from now? Ever talk to someone who told you something that touched your heart, whether it's an experience they had or just a good yarn that you'll think about long after the conversation's over?
These are the kinds of stories this book will show you how to write. The authors won't tell you exactly. That's a path you'll have to find out for yourself. But they'll give you guides, practical tips to learn how to talk and write like you're having a conversation with a reader who wants to know more about your story.
As a working journalist for a mid-sized newspaper in Southwest Virginia, I've read countless of books discussing the techniques of narrative writing. This one ranks high above them. Many of the authors break down the elements of telling good stories. For example, listen to Susan Orlean talk about having voice in your stories: "You can't invent a voice. And you can't imitate someone else's voice, though trying to can be a good exercise. It can lead you to begin to understand the mechanisms that convey the voice. Read your stories out loud so you can hear how you tell stories. As you read, ask yourself: Does it sound real? Would I have said it that way?"
The editors of the book offer nice introductions to each section and tell you who you'll be reading in the next few pages. It reminds me of a book by Stanley Cavell called "Cities of Words," which is presented as a series of lectures in a classroom.
The way this book is put together is similar. It reads like you're in class waiting for a lecture from folks such as Tom Wolfe, Susan Orlean, Tracy Kidder and others. There is no shortage of ideas, approaches to reporting and writing stories and you can't help but think how you would have tackled a famed writer's story if you were in their position. (Probably, not very well. But better, I'm assuming, than those who don't read this book.)
Writing true stories is not the easiest way to spend your time. It can get very frustrating and confusing. That's why this book is important. It has given me a new perspective on how to approach these kinds of stories and that's why I recommend it.
