Book Description

When Rilke, a dissolute and promiscuous auctioneer, comes upon a hidden collection of seemingly violent photographs, he feels compelled to unearth more about the deceased owner who coveted them. What follows is a compulsive journey of discovery, decadence, and deviousness that leads Rilke into a dark underworld of transvestite clubs, seedy bars, and porn shops. In this hidden city haunted by a host of vividly drawn characters, Rilke comes face to face with the dark desires and illicit urges that lurk behind even the most respectable facades.

5 out of 5 stars Skilled Storyteller, Slightly Stained.......2007-01-02

"Oh purity: Is it still possible? Is it possible still to be pure again?"

The question is asked by the poet Rainer Maria Rilke in one
of his letters, but it is also the theme of this book, whose
hero in the antiques auctioneer known only as Rilke. Rilke
is a deeply flawed piece of work: he is not above misappropriating
money or goods entrusted to him in the line of work. When
circumstances warrant, he's perfectly willing to convey
some drugs as a quid-pro-quo to a friend.

And yet Rilke is ultimately, a very engaging, self-reflecting
protagonist. In the course of clearing out the antiques
from a home, he stumbles on some pornography that shocks
him. (this in itself is no easy matter-his sex life consists
of three anonymous encounters-in a park, a tavern's toilet
and an rented room) The photos show what seems to be a
sexual murder and Rilke is touched by compassion for the girl
who appears to have been the victim.

Even though the pictures are fifty years old, he decides to
find out who this girl was and what happened to her.
Unsurprisingly, his curiousity leads him to a world even less
pure than his own and to the heart of a reality that is more
chilling than death. Set in Glasgow, the book crackles with
local color and language that lends a pleasant exoticism to
the story. The writer's familiarity with the details of transient
sexual encounters adds a certain gritty dailiness to our unlikely
hero and this perfectly engaging tale.

A skilled story-teller at work here in a place that's well past purity.

4 out of 5 stars Not the same old story........2006-03-24

This is a very inventive and gritty mystery with a very likable and unique narrator and supporting cast. Plus, the hero's business, auctioning off antiques, makes for an engrossing setup. While scouting the house of a wealthy elderly woman, our protaganist finds some very intriguing photos. Her request is that he destroy all that he finds in her deceased brother's private room. He doesn't.
I read a lot of mysteries. And I truly appreciate one that has complex characters and tells a good story. One that you haven't read several times before.
This is a good read. It's offbeat and not for the squeamish. The details can be disturbing and there is sexual content some might find offensive.
I didn't.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic look ..........2005-12-26

Fantastic look into the dark side of life, from the point of view of Rilke an auctioneer, who is asked to clear out a dead man's house in a week. The dead guy has antiques and objects de art that the auction house is fairly slavering over. It will be the sale of the century. One tiny thing, the dead guy has amassed quite a collection of pornography, and not all of it entirely savory. His sister wants it destroyed, and it's up to Rilke to accede to his wishes or lose the collection. There were some out of character actions taken, presumably to advance the storyline. Overall this novel was a tight read. Interestingly enough this is a debut, I'm looking forward to more from this author. I was sucked in from the first couple of pages, and it made wonderful reading on the lengthy car trip to the inlaws.

4 out of 5 stars Well Written & Engaging.......2005-10-26

I am not a big fan of mystery novels, but I picked this gem up in a used bookstore based on the jacket raves. Once started, I could not put it down. Most of this has to do with the wonderful writing, much like a Joyce Carol Oates novel - I was mesmerized by the flow and choice of words, the character development and then finally the story. You can feel the dark, charged atmospheres in all scenes. The emotions described are raw and genuine. Parts of the book are even amusing. Usually I am bogged down by dialogue accents from other countries; in this case I was merely charmed. I was captivated by the main character Rilke, though to be sure - he and parts of the story line are seedy and gritty. If that's not your cup of tea, duck out now. I don't care that the plot is simple, I was drawn in to all of it as I read it over several rainy nights when I should have been sleeping. Each chapter seduced me to want more. While Rilke could have been heartless and cold, he came across as vulnerable and real - I prefer to see the personal side of some charcters and his isn't the only one we witness. I give four stars only because I know some people will judge the book none-too-quickly simply on the r-rated aspects of it - to each his own. I, like other reviewers here, cannot believe this account came from a woman. Whoever the author is, I would like them to write more. This would make a terrific little movie.

5 out of 5 stars unputdownable.......2005-03-17

This is the most thrilling, enjoyable book I've read in years. The writing is terse, mood-filled, vivid, darkly funny. An original and abstract-sounding conceit (narrator obsessed with old photos owned by a dead guy he never met of a woman he doesn't know) turns out to be unexpectedly riveting. I loved it and my partner loved it, too. I read her followup novella, TAMBURLAINE MUST DIE, which is very good. But CUTTING ROOM is BRILLIANT.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but desperately needs an update.......2006-04-23

This is a very comprehensive overview of all the details that a prospective assistant editor should be aware of.

But the field of digital editing has changed tremendously since the book was last updated in 1999, and I found the sections on digital editing dated to the point of being useless.

Hopefully the author will update the book soon to include current processes for telecine and handling digital film and audio sources.

5 out of 5 stars All its missing is the kit..........2006-03-24

If you want a book that takes you through EVERY procedural aspect of assisting (film or NLE) then this is probably the book for you.

One drawback is that it might not be as specific as you may like, as it caters for Film, AVID, Lightworks... and it won't tell you which buttons to press. But conversely this adds to its longevity, as it isn't version specific, and so doesn't out date.

What it does tell you is how to work in the edit suite, what work practices are important and how to establish them.

It hundreds (and hundreds) of pages can seem a bit dense and imposing at first, and without some hands on experience you might get lost in the explanations, but this book isn't meant for a casual reader, it is a professional document that will widen your understanding. It might even help you blag your way into a cutting room.

Buy this book if you are serious about starting a career in drama editing (or any type of editing for that matter) as it will lay good foundations,

Well worth the cash.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding technical and warmly human editing manual........1998-12-28

This is the third and extensively updated version of Norman Hollyn's fantastic in depth review of what really goes into both working on and in the film editing industry. Presented in a format that puts you in the role of an apprentice editor, it covers so many of the details that one would learn only with on the job experience. This is more than just a how to book, it is also a "how it is" book with practical information from first starting out, to first job.

It doesn't look like things are gonna work out between Yota and Noboku but Yota isn't allowed to feel sorry for himself for long as he runs into a strange girl named Natsumi on the subway who's also nursing a broken heart and has come to town to make contact with her estranged boyfriend. Did I mention the fact that she's broke and carrying all her earthly possessions on her back? After she saves Yota from being beaten to a pulp by some street thugs it's kinda hard to refuse to let her stay at his house with him and Ai. Meanwhile videogirl Mai continues to wait for the oppurtune moment to erase Ai.

The great thing about the Video Girl Ai series is that all of the chracters are emotionally honest. They might be screwed up in the head and not know where their feelings lie or who they really love, but at least they don't lie about it. They tell and act on what they're feeling at the moment. There are some bad spots of writing in this volume, especially when Yota KNOWS Ai's life is in danger but he forestalls helping her in order to talk things over with Noboku. Katsura's artwork makes up for some of the absurd moments with some of the most delicate and detailed art in the manga business and he's also no slouch in the action department either.

I would also recommend the Ah My Goddess tv anime series on dvd.

Something Very Special (Again!) In The Way of Detective Stories

First novel by Cameron McCabe (Ernst Julius Bornemann). Published in 1937, it's a fascinating story of murder and intrigue, with the killer dying half-way through, and his narrative picked up by the policeman who'd been trailing him. Unique. And worth it just for the fake quotes by leading literary figures of the day.

5 out of 5 stars A marvel for the mind.......1999-11-26

If you love crime/mystery books... prepare to be spellbound. I love this book.

It was recommended to me along with the information that this great crime book "is impossible to make into a film." If you think Hollywood can do 'anything' with a book, read this and understand why it couldn't bring this to the screen. It's all in the pages that you will want to turn faster and faster.

This book is proof that movies can never surpass the art of novel writing.

P.S. The author on the cover, Cameron McCabe, is actually the name of the main character in the book. Adds to the intrigue.

Book Description

Like the hero in a classic Hitchcock thriller, the innocent movie buff at the center of this witty and suspenseful novel finds his ordinary life suddenly transformed when he’s plunged into a harrowing game of intrigue, duplicity, and danger. Spurred into a frantic race from New York to Hollywood to Barcelona and back, he’ll encounter enough hairpin twists, shocking surprises, white-knuckle tension, and sinister characters to give even the master of suspense himself a serious case of vertigo. But in this scenario, the mayhem and murder are all too real.

Self-proclaimed movie geek and divorced thirtysomething Roy Milano lives alone in a cramped Manhattan apartment, toiling as a freelancer to make ends meet. It’s a life perfectly suited to the creator of Trivial Man, Roy’s self-published newsletter—filled with tidbits of little-known Tinseltown lore for the delight of other fringe-dwelling cinemaphiles. And it’s a tantalizing phone call from one such kindred spirit that thrusts Roy headlong into his waking noir nightmare.

“I’ve got The Magnificent Ambersons,” declares Alan Gilbert, host of a homemade cable-TV show about the silver screen, who now claims to possess the rarest of the rare: the long-lost and never-released complete print of Orson Welles’s classic follow-up to Citizen Kane. But when Roy arrives at his fellow movie maven’s abode to sneak a peek at celluloid history, the front door is ominously open, Alan Gilbert is dead, and The Magnificent Ambersons is nowhere in sight. Even though the cops arrest a local drug addict for the murder, Roy knows they’re wrong—because the theft of the movie masterpiece points to a different kind of junkie. The kind Roy knows only too well . . . and the kind he’s certain only he can catch.

But Roy Milano is no Sam Spade, even if he does run into more gun-toting goons, sucker punches, and double-crosses than Bogey on a busy day. And the suspects prove to be anything but usual—including a bodybuilding film fanatic obsessed with bizarre rumors about an A-list actress, a rotund reporter who holds Hollywood in thrall via red-hot Internet dispatches from his parents’ basement, and a starstruck street punk with a thousand voices. And then there’s the transatlantic love triangle that finds Roy caught between his very own eager Gal Friday and a sultry Spanish siren with a stunning secret. But when the bodies start to fall faster than a box-office bomb, Roy must cut to the chase in his perilous quest to save the Holy Grail of cinema—and unmask a killer—before everything fades to black.

3 out of 5 stars reasonably good.......2005-07-16

It has good mystery, lots of dead bodies, some sex and travel to exotic places, and movie trivia. But some parts of the story are moving really slow

And yes, there is one more amusement: a far right-wing Congressman from Massachusetts winning his next term by a landslide. Considering the fact that recently I read about a Republican Senator from Delaware (D.Brown Deception Point) and a conservative governor of Minnesota (J.Sandford Hidden Prey) it seems like there is really a ground swell there.

2 out of 5 stars Great idea , poor execution.......2004-05-09

This was a great concept for a book. But it turns into a zany comic novel that never lives up to the concept. Too bad, all film buffs have had dreams about seeing a complete Welles version of the masterpiece The Magnificent Ambersons.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining with over-the-top but sympathetic characters.......2004-05-02

When a fellow movie trivia buff tells Roy Milano he's found the holy grail of film--the original director's cut of Orson Welles's Magnificent Ambersons, Roy can hardly wait to see the screening. But when he arrives at his friends house, he finds the movie gone and his friend murdered. Now Roy sets out on a mission--to find the movie and see it for himself. If he can help find the actual killer, so much the better. Working his way through the slightly weird clan of fellow trivia buffs, and soon joined by one of the rare attractive females in the group, Roy heads to Hollywood, Spain, and Boston in search of the elusive movie.

It doesn't take Roy long to realize that he's onto something major. He seems to run into fists at least as often as clues, but he also finds people who think he knows more than he does--and who are willing to give him money to help them find what they want. Because outside of the narrow world of old-film cultists, the Magnificent Ambersons is simply another ancient flick. Roy's single-minded obsession nearly gets him killed--which makes him better off than most of the people he comes in contact with. Eventually Roy tracks down the movie, but having it only increases the danger.

Author Laurence Klavan dishes up an over-the-top adventure with an unlikely trivia-nerd hero who, nevertheless, manages to be sympathetic and even get his share of the girls. Fast-paced action, badly flawed characters, and America's obsession with the movie industry provide plenty of reader interest. Klavan's high-quality writing held my interest and kept me turning the pages--I read the entire book in one sitting. The twist at the end worked for me--adding to the emotional impact of a fine novel.

4 out of 5 stars A Witty and Suspenseful Novel That is Fun to Read.......2004-03-07

Reading is a compulsory activity for some of us. I'm addicted; I almost always have to be reading something --- whether I'm listening to music, watching television, eating, waiting, talking on the telephone or, ah, driving. Not a good idea I know. I'm trying to cut back, but it's tough. As with a great many compulsions, reading started out being fun --- in my case, Dick Tracy comic books at the local drugstore --- and has taken on a life of its own. It's still fun and enjoyable, of course, but those elements take an almost secondary role, and it's tough getting started on a 12-step program with reading when your higher power is Random House. Once in a while, however, you pick up a book that reminds you that reading is supposed to be FUN. And that brings us to THE CUTTING ROOM by Laurence Klavan.

This is an almost noir mystery that doesn't take itself too seriously. It revolves around Roy Milano, a New York City film aficionado who is a self-styled expert in all things celluloid. Milano finds himself unexpectedly drawn into danger and intrigue when he is invited by Alan Gilbert, an acquaintance and rival, to witness a private screening of a legendary, long lost film: the complete, unreleased print of Orson Welles's The Magnificent Ambersons. Milano arrives at Gilbert's apartment only to find his erstwhile host dead and the film gone. Milano's compulsion --- compulsions really make the world go round, don't they? --- leads him on a wild chase across the country to Los Angeles, then halfway around the world to Barcelona and back again, all in pursuit of a film whose existence is at best apocryphal.

Milano introduces fellow film buffs along the way, broadly drawn eccentrics, and you will recognize at least one of them within your own circle of friends. He also unexpectedly encounters the granddaughter of the great man himself, a beautiful lady with secrets of her own. Toss in a couple of surprise allies, some unexpected enemies and a whole bunch of sedate but interesting plot twists, and you have a print version of one of those madcap ensemble movies from the 1960s, kind of a print version of It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

The best part of the book, however, is Milano's penchant for dropping bits of film trivia here, there and everywhere throughout his narrative, usually appropriately, occasionally not, but always entertainingly. You're almost guaranteed to learn something. I never knew why Mr. Briggs was replaced by Mr. Phelps in the television version of Mission: Impossible until I read this book. More knowledge, imminently useful or not, waits within.

Klavan has a winner with THE CUTTING ROOM and with Milano. Klavan's background in film and theater runs deep, which gives this fine novel and its characters that ring of authenticity that cannot be artificially manufactured. Most of all, however, THE CUTTING ROOM is fun to read. And --- great news --- Milano will be back. I hope he brings more film trivia with him.

4 out of 5 stars Breezy Fun.......2004-02-12

This breezy thriller has all the ingredients to be a surefire success: a Hitchcockian everyman thrust into the role of detective, a beautiful foreign lass, a host of colorful supporting characters, a rapid-fire globetrotting pace that moves between New York, Hollywood, and Barcelona, and, of course, the MacGuffin. Which is not to suggest that this is a wonderful book. Rather, it is a good beach or airplane book, the perfect witty read for movie buffs who want to sit back and be entertained in print. Set in the world of film trivia mavens, the story concerns the search for a legendary unseen complete print of Orson Welles' film The Magnificent Ambersons. Roy is a movie nerd in his later 30s who is caught up in some very deadly business, as the story wends its way from the computer strewn bedroom of am internet rumormonger (a thinly veiled Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool News fame) to the Hollywood Hills trysting pad of an action movie star (a thinly veiled Bruce Willis clone), and into the beds of several women. It's all put together in a very snappy, pulpy style, right down to the socks in the jaw, and the double-crossing dames. Just like a decent movie, the book will keep you cheerfully diverted for two hours and then fade quickly from memory.

Book Description

The mummy came to life in the 1940s out of Universal Pictures' need to produce quick turnaround, low budget "B" movies. Universal produced The Mummy's Hand, The Mummy's Tomb, The Mummy's Ghost, and The Mummy's Curse (originally The Mummy's Return) and thus created a popular franchise that is still supported today by a following of loyal fans. (Universal was prompted to produce a remake of its Mummy films in 1999.)

This book is devoted entirely to Universal's Mummy movies of the 1940s. It reveals lost action and dialogue by analyzing scenes that were edited out days before The Mummy's Hand was released to theaters, treats readers to other dialogue that was filmed and then cut down to almost nothing before being included in the films, and compares and contrasts the original story of The Mummy's Return to the final shooting script of what was later renamed The Mummy's Curse. Each of the films has its own chapter, and chapters are also devoted to the actors who played the heroes, heroines, high priests, victims, and mummies in the films, and to the filmmakers who brought the mummies to life.

I took off one star only because I would have loved Thomas to begin with Boris Karloff's original MUMMY which-in my opinion and most fans agree, is the best.

Granted, most of the people buying this title will have seen the Karloff film, but it would nice to start at the "beginning" so to speak and go from there on to the sequels. A minor gripe !

Highly recommend this book; an enjoyable, well written, and informative read.

5 out of 5 stars The Legend of Kharis.......2003-02-06

When I was ten years old I saw "The Mummy's Curse" in my hometown theater in New Jersey. It was a Saturday afternoon and during the 1940's every child in town attended the Saturday Afternoon Matinee. I have never forgotten that movie, nor any of the other "B" pictures that graced the screen so long ago.

I have a collection of all of the "Mummy" movies on videotape, and although I have many books on the movies of the "golden age", this is the first movie book which actually gives us the scenes and dialogue as they was originally written for each of the four films that were produced in the 1940s.

The book is well-written. Of particular interest to me was the section covering the actors and actresses who portrayed the heroes, heroines, high priests, and victims. These actors and actresses were in many "B" movies, especially the 12 or 15 chapter movie serials of the era.

The most famous "mummy" of all time was Boris Karloff, who was in the precursor of the mummy films, aptly called "The Mummy."
However, the collection of the four films covered in Mr. Feramisco's book, "The Mummy Unwrapped," had Tom Tyler as the first actor to portray the mummy in "The Mummy's Hand". (Mr. Tyler then became Captain Marvel in one of the many movie serials of the 40s) as well as a star in the many Westerns produced.

With the second film, "The Mummy's Tomb," a young Lon Chaney, Jr. took over the role. He was the son of the famous Lon Chaney of silent films. It was his destiny to become Kharis (the mummy) in the last two films of the series as well, "The Mummy's Ghost" and "The Mummy's Curse".

Mr. Feramisco's book is well written. It is particularly enjoyable to be able to read the scripts as they were originally meant to be, and then see how the dialogue and action were purged, or in some cases, eliminated altogether, to produce a sharp, clean and fast-moving final movie.

I loved the whole book, but was especially attracted to the section on the heroes, heroines, high priests, and victims. It was such fun to read about these actors and actresses, their beginnings and their later movie roles, especially since I grew up seeing these actors in so many other movies.

Those of us, who enjoyed seeing these films on the big screen in the forties, will certainly enjoy this wonderful book. It will certainly bring back some scary memories for those of us that were ten years old when we were introduced to "The Mummy!"

I was introduced to my mummy film, "The Mummy's Curse," about the time I was ten years old. Mr. Feramisco encountered Kharis when he was ten years old, and my granddaughter, last week, voiced her desire to see my film collection on the "Mummy."

There was a space in my bookcase, just waiting for Mr. Feramisco's fine book. I can't say how much I have enjoyed reading it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Horror Enthusiasts and Classic Film Buffs.......2002-06-27

The mummy came to life in the 1940s out of Universal Pictures' need to produce quick turnaround, low budget "B" movies. Universal produced "The Mummy's Hand", "The Mummy's Tomb", "The Mummy's Ghost", and "The Mummy's Curse", and thus created a popular franchise that is still supported today by a following of loyal fans. (Universal was prompted to produce a remake of its "Mummy" films in 1999 with Brendan Frasier.)

This book is devoted entirely to Universal's "Mummy" movies of the 1940s. It reveals lost action and dialogue by analyzing scenes that were edited out days before "The Mummy's Hand" was released to theaters, treats readers to other dialogue that was filmed and then cut down to almost nothing before being included in the films, and compares and contrasts the original story of "The Mummy's Return" to the final shooting script of what was later renamed "The Mummy's Curse". Each of the films has its own chapter, and chapters are also devoted to the actors who played the heroes, heroines, high priests, victims, and mummies in the films, and to the filmmakers who brought the mummies to life.

The book's foreward is written by Peggy Moran-Koster, the feisty heroine and only living actor from "The Mummy's Hand".

Universal horror enthusiast Thomas M. Feramisco is a prize winning script writer and copywriter. He lives in Thousand Oaks, California.

4 out of 5 stars Why Did This Series End??.......2006-01-08

I still have all four and was sure I would enjoy many more in the future. Then the author disappeared and the series dried up. I occasionally search for a new effort but now know it's not going to happen. Have never found any reason (author dying, retiring etc) why the author stopped. Loved the protaganists and their give and take.

5 out of 5 stars Cleverest mystery series ever--intriguing, witty, great plot.......1999-03-30

Cutler uses an unconventional form for his Goodman-Bradley series which could be confusing in the hands of a writer less adept--but is instead illuminating and great fun. His heroes are Goodman, an irrascible over-the-hill P.I. whose glory days are long past, and Bradley, a young West Hollywood guy into the local scene. Cutler's books have chapters alternating the first person voice of each of the two characters which works with diabolical cleverness. Add his Hollywood milieu for the stories and you have magic. It's CRIMINAL there hasn't been a new book featuring this pair in some time

    4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-04-04

Very good read. Unusual Setting, not many book set in Jerusalem which mades it more fun. That changes with a move to L.A. Add all the adjustments the hero has to make. Plus a very good mystery. If you can find this book, it is worth the read.
