Book Description

Children ages 4 to 8 have a hard time grasping the concept of “God.” But it can be done through the person of Jesus. Told in a wonderfully inviting style, this Bible storybook shares many beloved Bible stories and reveals how the news and message of Jesus unfolds throughout Scripture, from the Old Testament all the way through the New Testament. Jesus in the Story helps readers love and appreciate Jesus and begin their own journey of faith. Beautiful 4-color artwork throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2007-10-02

I ordered this book for my grandchildren after I heard a reading from the book on a radio program. My daughter loves the book--as do her children. She uses it for story time and devotional time. Clear presentation of the Gospel with each story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-08

Instead of just stories this book brings out the "meaning" behind each, that it's all about Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars Showing the Centrality of Christ in the Scriptures to Children.......2007-08-18

Is the Bible a book of stories? good morals? heroes? No, suggests Sally Lloyd-Jones. Influenced by New York pastor and author Timothy Keller, Lloyd-Jones takes the major movements in the Bible's plot line as well as the familiar Sunday School stories and shows children how the entire Bible points to one man, the God-Man: Jesus Christ.

This is an excellent resource for families in a biblically illiterate age. I highly recommend this book to you. Another outstanding resource is David Helm's The Big Picture Story Bible.

5 out of 5 stars An asset to devotion time........2007-08-13

My daughter and I use this book probably twice a week. The stories are short, but not too short. They all leave the door wide open for a discussion about Jesus. My daughter enjoys the stories as do I. Plenty of well-drawn pictures too. An asset to our devotion time.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Children's Bible!.......2007-08-09

This book is amazing - it is humorous and interesting and the kids listened with great interest to all of the stories. Every single story mentions Christ and how He is tied into the "big picture" of the Bible - from the Old Testament to the New. We love this book!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but tailor to your situation.......2006-12-30

I read the first half of the book (which is to be read by the dad alone), then proceeded to read the latter half with my son. I would highly recommend that the dad read the whole book first, not just the first half. Generally the book is well done, but I found a variety of the descriptions to simply cover situations and scenarios which I largely did not experience as a boy. Since the book asks the dad, at the end of each chapter, to talk about their experiences you want to be prepared to address issues you may not have experienced. I don't fault the author so much for this (everyone has a different experience, and it is ultimately absurd for anyone to think that everyone is cookie cutter), but this is an important set of topics to discuss with your son - read the whole book and tailor appropriately, IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars Help your son stay pure.......2006-06-13

This is a great book for many reasons. First off, it makes the point very clearly that a father's relationship with his sons is vitally important during the "second half of the game," the years starting with pre-adolescence. Not only are too many of us are caught up in difficult work schedules, but it gets more difficult. No longer is he that little boy who worships the ground you walk on. It's too easy to make an effort and, when you are rebuffed, just quit and hope for the best. All too easy to just figure, "well I turned out ok ... besides, maybe this is the way kids relate to their parents nowadays."

Well, Dad, that would be the worst decision you can make. This is the time of his life when he needs you more than ever. Many problems that will plague your dear son for a lifetime (including confused sexual identity, lust, pornography addiction, etc.) grow up during this period. After all, he's a good kid, but he doesn't know the ropes. Who knows how many traps are waiting for him out there - the world, the flesh, and the devil are all working against him.

The second reason the book is excellent is that it gives you a relatively painless way to go about doing what you know you should do. Many times I have struggled with starting conversations on these topics with my son, but was not quite sure where to go. I see three extremely valuable suggestions here. First off, relate stories to him. Your son probably knows little about your background. Knowing that you've faced struggles helps him to relate to you better and will probably help him to be more open sharing his own concerns and problems. This includes the dirty laundry too - such as the first time you viewed pornography. And I can't help but thinking of ol' Dad whenever some temptation comes up will help him to resist the temptation - the secret thrill is gone.

The second valuable suggestion the book makes is to create a safe place where he can "approach the throne of grace." I set up something like this in our spare bedroom years ago and it has yielded some benefits already and I expect more. Finally, the book provides suggestions of method to prompts discussion, such as reading this book and others together. These keep you going and provides a way to discuss difficult topics, and also helps answer the question "how much should I tell him and when." Certainly, you have to apply your own wisdom and knowledge of your son, but having an experienced father like Fred Stoeker making suggestions is extremely valuable, especially for those of us who never had a good role model in doing such things.

I should mention something that this book is NOT. It is not a "birds and the bees" kind of book. Although it does have some information in the early chapters, it pretty much assumes that either your son already knows the basic mechanics of sex - hopefully from your teaching over the years rather than through his friends. If you are interested, there are other good books on this subject from a Christian point of view. Where this book really comes in is helping your young man manage the resources God has given him. That is, not the mechanism of sex, but the policy of how to manage it before it starts managing him. And many of us know that sex will manage him unless he has the tools to take charge of it.

I should also note that Steve Arterburn did not write the book, it just shows up under his name. Fred Stoeker wrote it and virtually all the experiences and suggestions in the book appear to be Fred's. Some who may question Arterburn's own morality may be put at ease knowing that it's just Arterburn's name attached - the book is really Fred's. Don't pass up an extremely valuable book because somebody's name appears on the cover.

So Dad, get this book, and get on with doing what you know you should do. I think the age range of 11-13 is probably the time to start it. Don't let the "Sexual Code of Silence" continue!

5 out of 5 stars Will Change the Life of You and Your Son.......2004-08-04

I was thouroughly impressed with the writing of this book. While being careful to not overstate the obvious, the authors were forward and truthful. I felt that their honesty and integrity as men were painted in the way they told their own stories.

When I read this book, I had both of my sons in mind, and will read this with them one day. No hesitations.

A big "thank you" to Fred and Mike.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Resource for Dad ....and Mom!.......2004-03-08

Fred Stoeker and the team of EveryMan have provided an invaluable tool for equipping young man in the battle for sexual purity. Fred provides dialog and insight to the necessary discussions that will need to take place with young sons. A must have for every father. (The author does acknowledge the single mother and her plight and provides gracious assistance throughout the book.)

Hi, honey! It's me, Mom. I know it's a big secret that your friend Holly and her boyfriend Mark are eloping in Italy, and that you and Mark's friend Cal Langdon (the handsome New York Journal reporter with the big book deal) are going, too, as their witnesses. But I just saw Holly's mother at the Kroger Sav-On, and I thought I'd warn you: She doesn't seem to like Mark very much at all. Just wanted to let you know.

PS I don't understand why you don't like that nice Cal Langdon! He seemed so smart when I saw him being inte viewed on Charlie Rose. And so handsome!

PPS Don't forget to wear a sweater!

Cartoonist Jane Harris is delighted by the prospect of her first-ever trip to Europe. But it's hate at first sight for Jane and Cal Langdon, and neither is too happy at the prospect of sharing a villa with one another for a week—not even in the beautiful and picturesque Marches countryside. But when Holly and Mark's wedding plans hit a major snag that only Jane and Cal can repair, the two find themselves having to put aside their mutual dislike for one another in order to get their best friends on the road to wedded bliss—and end up on a road themselves ... one neither of them ever expected.

Meg Cabot was born in Bloomington, Indiana. She is the author of seven historical romances under the pseudonym Patricia Cabot as well as Boy Meets Girl, The Boy Next Door, She Went All the Way and the bestselling young adult fiction series The Princess Diaries. 5 out of 5 stars Interesting way of presenting a story.......2007-09-05

I am so glad that I read this book. I had never read a Meg Cabot book before She Went All the Way, and I was not impressed with that book. This book, however, was very good. The story is presented in a series of emails, receipts, restaurant menus, journal entries, and instant messages. The author did a fabulous job of bringing all these medias together to form a complete story. There is much humour throughout the book, and I found myself laughing out loud lots of times. I finished the book in a matter of days because it is a cute story and a quick read.
After reading this, I will definitely be reading more Meg Cabot books.

After a day of hiding the title of this book at school, I finished and I just have to say, the "Boy" books by Meg Cabot are entirely hilarious, and really fast reads, and if you like funny romance novels that you can very well finish in one or two sittings, go for this. It's not really "dirty" except for references, and it was so cute and the kind of thing that you would expect to read about. But that doesn't stop it from making my day.

My son is 7 and I was not sure what he would think of this book. He loves it. I was very surprised by his reaction to the book. I skimmed the book and felt that it was appropriate for any age boy with good reading skills.

4 out of 5 stars Grandsons loved it!!.......2007-02-17

I bought this book to use with my grandsons, ages 11 & 13. I pulled it out one day when they were visiting and read them the introduction. It might have been the phrase "impressing the girls" that first caught their attention! I read to them from the book, starting with "How to behave in a movie theater". The chapters are short instructions followed by "You do" and "You don't" and "Why" sections. The advice is excellent and concise! After reading a few chapters to them, the 13 year old asked to see it and picked a few chapters he wanted me to read to them. Then the 11 year old wanted to pick a few!! We spent over an hour reading and discussing and they never lost interest! The next morning they were still saying things like "I put the toilet seat down, "just like a young gentleman should"! We will read more together the next time they visit. The book is written so you can randomly pick chapters that appeal at the time. Money well spent, time well invested in "my two fine young gentlemen"!!

Flashback to 1989 with your favorite characters from Queer as Folk in this new line of books based on the record-breaking Showtime series hailed as "wonderful" (Newsweek) and "groundbreaking" (People)!

Before they were grown men working and playing in Pittsburgh, Brian Kinney and Michael Novotny were high-school friends dealing with bullies, secret crushes, and their emerging sexuality. Step back in time with two of Queer as Folk's hottest characters in the first book in this provocative new series.

Every Nine Seconds

On the eve of Brian Kinney's eighteenth birthday, he and his best friend, Michael Novotny, celebrate a bond that could link them forever if their future paths don't separate them for good. In a few short weeks Brian, the seductive soccer star, will leave for college, where he'll be free to explore the adult pursuits in which he's only dabbled in high school. Michael is destined for a more sedate life in community college while living at home with his eccentric mom. But before their lives diverge, a hot new club will open, they'll go to the prom "stag" together, and family strife will turn their world upside down. Brian and Michael still have some unforgettable times to share before graduation ushers in the next stages of their lives.

3 out of 5 stars QAF - Every Nine Seconds.......2006-07-14

Not the best writing I've ever read...a little bit of fantasy for those of us who speculate about the origins of the characters on the show.

3 out of 5 stars you can find better fan fiction online for *FREE*.......2006-04-08

i'm a newly obsessed qaf fan, only since january 2006. (yes, i know the series ended last summer, thank you!) and of course, since i am watching all 5 seasons in a matter of months, i am obsessed with devouring anything and everything about this show, its characters, and its actors.

although i enjoyed having a backstory to how brian and mikey met, and why they are the way they are, the book is written in a very simplistic way. like i said, you can find better stuff online for free, but it was decent enough. the sequel, "never tear us apart" absolutely SUCKED. focuses on mikey and brian after they both go away to different colleges, and how their friendship changes. talk about a yawnfest; i tried to skip ahead to the parts about brian because mikey and his captain astro fetish just doesn't do it for me. i ordered both a couple of weeks ago, and while i finished "every nine seconds" in a night, "never tear us apart" is still dog-eared about 1/3 of the way through. don't know if i'll ever finish it...

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.......2006-02-18

I have never seen the show and opened the book based soley on the back cover copy. I really enjoyed it and will read the others and also will likely watch the dvds now. It was a nice, fun book.

1 out of 5 stars I expected so much more.......2005-12-24

As a huge fan of the show, I expected much more from these books. One reviewer describes them as "glorified fanfiction" and I could not agree more, unless the word "bad" were included. This book reminded me of drivel penned by a 13 year old girl.

In the book, Brian and Michael experience the fun and the problems of the end of their senior year in high school. Events including Prom and Graduation occur, and you get a small look into the worlds of the characters.

I would recommend it to anyone who merely dabbles in the show and who needs something to read at the beach where they can't bring their computers along and read quality fanfiction. Be careful, though, not to take anything in it as fact and not to judge the show on it.

Any true fan of the show will be at best annoyed- but more likely disgusted- by the startling lack of insight into the characters and many discrepancies with the show. The characters are barely recognizable- at best they are underdeveloped shadows of themselves.

Brian and Michael's Prom is appalling- it makes a mockery of the Season 1 finale, and the scene the liquor store is the final nail in the coffin of this overrated tripe.

Don't waste your money or your time on this bastardization of the show. Buy the DVDs instead.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any QAF Fan.......2005-10-27

I read all 3 books in this series in a week. For anyone who knows me that really fast. I'm not much of a reader but I couldn't put these books down. I loved how the authors stayed so true to the characters in the show. Although there were a few tiny differences, you would have to be a hard core QAF fan to notice (example- brian's bracelet). I would recommend to anyone that wants to read these book to watch the show first. I feel that seeing the show first gave me a better feel for the characters and made me enjoy the books more. Oh yea, and coming from a straight female's perspective, the sex scenes are pretty hot!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Jackson's book.......2007-08-08

I'm not sure if this is the book that Jackson had or not, as this was published in 2004 and the book taken from Jackson's residence was collected in the 1993 raid. Unless this is just a new edition of the same old book. Jackson's version also has a different cover.

In any case, this is the inscription written by Michael Jackson in his copy of "Boys will be boys" (State's Exhibit #841):

"Look at the true spirit of happiness and joy in these boys faces, this is the spirit of Boyhood, A life I never had and will always dream of. This is the life I want for my children.- MJ" (page 9150 of trial transcripts, lines 25-28)

I think that says it all.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this beautiful book.......2005-05-13

Well, the previous reviewer is wrong because YES this book is one of the books that were presented by the D.A. in Jackson's trial. ONLY a TWISTED mind can see something wrong with this book. And the twisted mind is NOT MJ, but Sneddon... I just bought it and I loved it! Very good book, very inspirational. 5/5
BTW I believe Michael is Innocent of all charges.

2 out of 5 stars The book for the Michael Jackson Trial?.......2005-05-02

Are we sure this is the book they are refering to that they found at Neverland as presented as part of the Michael Jackson trial?

5 out of 5 stars lol.......2005-05-02

I'm inclined to believe that anyone who thinks this book is appealing to 'prurient interests' is speaking from their own issues. So children are supposed to be covered up in sacks - oh I know lets put all the children and women and anyone who might inspire aesthetic or sexual interest into purdah....My siblings and I wore a lot less during the summer of 1966 playing in the swimming hole and we were accompanied by adults that took joy in our joy.

Whatever you say Dennis McBride. Check out the cover, the kid is totally wearing daisy dukes. If thats not appealing to the prurient interests of underage children than what is??

    Book Description

Word on the street is that being a guy these days can be kinda rough. Well, here are ten fictional stories, some funny, some sad, that deal with that very subject. Stories about being a guy, written by guys. From Walter Dean Myers's story about a black kid who takes a white girl to the prom, to Mo Willems's comedy about an invincible kid who goes to a high school for superheroes, to graphic novelist Craig Thompson's story about the skaters vs. the wussy football players, each manages to ever-so-subtly reflect the modern-day concerns of guyhood.

Gathering together some of the most exciting writers of today and tomorrow, Every Man for Himself offers teen readers a great selection of honest and real stories about everyday guys who get pummeled by some life lessons . . . and still manage to come out on top.

3 out of 5 stars Slow But Very Interesting.......2006-06-14

This was a slow but very interesting book. A book combined with short stories bye many different authors. Lots of these stories were good and a lot were slow. Some were just sort of I didn't even know what was going on. One thing good about this book was the emotions I felt when reading it. I felt so many different emotions such as surprised, sort of creeped out, very glad and extremely sad. This book has taught me some very important life lessons though. Some of those are to stand up for my rights. Also to not judge anyone and to talk to them first to get to know them. My favorite story in this book was the Prom Prize by Walter Dean Myers. It was about an African American boy named Fly Williams. His friends thought it was funny if they ran a contest where girls put there names into a box and whatever name they drew Fly would have to go with her to the prom. It's a good story about teen pressure and what to do if you do get pressured. All together this is a really moving book and might help you in everyday life.

    Book Description

In this addictive and highly original debut novel a fifteen-year-old boy dies mysteriously, leaving behind a secret ledger filled with his darkly comic confessions. Whether fantasizing about being a minority, breaking into his neighbors" homes, or gunning down an exotic bird, Henry Every's wayward quest for betterment sometimes bordered on the criminal. Alone now in their suburban house, his father pores over the ledger in a final attempt to connect with the boy he never really knew -- and, more urgently, to figure out how he died. As Harlan Every learns the truth about his son's many misadventures and transgressions, he also discovers the part he unwittingly played in Henry's tragic death and the real reason his wife walked out years ago. The story grows into two parallel love stories -- one past, one present -- with drastically different outcomes. Witty and wise, The Every Boy is a page-turning mystery, a love story, an exploration of what it means to be a family, and a one-of-a kind celebration of human individuality.

    5 out of 5 stars WTF?!.......2007-10-09

if you've never heard of the Jersey Devil or an irukandji or an apotemnophile, if you hated high school, believe in love, like whipits and David Lynch, and if you just want to read a book that makes you bust out a hi-liter, then here ya go.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing profound here.......2007-08-20

THE EVERY BOY is the story 15 year old Henry who, we discover right in the beginning, has recently died. The story unfolds as Henry's father reads the boy's diary and discovers he never really knew his son at all.

I realize I'm swimming against the tide here, but I must admit I found this book seriously lacking. While it's well written and filled with interesting, quirky characters, THE EVERY BOY falls short in several ways. First of all, the book is clearly intending to make a profound statement about human relationships. But it suceeds here only with regard to the father (who, reading his son's astute observations, finally realizes how profoundly he's let down everyone he loves). While the oddball characters are all portrayed in an artsy, engaging way, they are so far removed from real people, people you'll ever actually encounter in the real world, that whatever meaning Shapiro is looking to make vis-a-vis his characters are lost. For example, Henry is so erudite - even as a young child - he's not even remotely believable. Time and again the boy's unnatural precocity pulled me right out of the story. Most importantly, I never came to care about any of the characters. Perhaps their other-worldly natures made them too remote to care about.

5 out of 5 stars dana adam shapiro, let's be friends.......2007-06-26

i picked this book up the other day, a different size than all the others on the shelf. and lo and behold, mr. dana adam shapiro is a producer/co-director of murderball, the documentary about wheelchair rugby players that was a huge hit at disability awareness events i've organized. is mr. shapiro as sharp a writer as murderball is a film? yes, yes, yes! i've been thrilled by every page. what some reviewers describe as "quirky", others might recognize in the oddball aspect of his characters the tendency of highly intelligent people to be plagued by the disconnect between their internal lives and the symbols of self that they present to the rest of the world. if that makes any sense. so, all y'all should read the book, and D.A.S., you should call me so we can hang out and make art together, ok?

    5 out of 5 stars i love this book.......2007-03-15

i really like this book. a friend suggested it to me and at first i thougt it was going to be sad... but he said it was funny and i trusted him. it is so funny and cute. i ended up buying it for all my friends, men, women, teens, and older people. it is a great gift and a great read. i'm looking forward to another book by the author.

    5 out of 5 stars Posthumo(ro)us fun from Shaprio.......2007-03-01

Had the joy of having Shapiro speak to my film class tonight and figured I would, in return, write the guy at least a quasi-review. What can I say about the book that hasn't already been said? Good book? Yes. Should you read it? Probably.

One thing I would like to address: I have heard many call Shapiro's work empty or hackneyed, citing that he attempts to substitute idiosyncratic characters in lieu of deeper meaning. Granted, the characters are quirky at the least and, for some, simply too eccentric to be recognized as "true" characters. Though we may have seen the "precocious teen/eccentric family" archetype reaching its pinnacle in both literature and film in the last decade or so, the oddities of the characters in Shapiro's work are far from relevant when considering the work using a holistic approach. I agree that such characters might veil deeper meanings, but this is the brilliance behind the work; it is simply up to the audience to lift the veil and search for the universal truths about love, loss, and "jellyfish" the Every Boy communicates while still employing that dark humor we all have come to love.
