Introduction by Timothy Brennan

Translated into twenty languages and published in more than fourteen Spanish editions, The Lost Steps, originally published in 1953, is Alejo Carpentier's most heralded novel.

A composer, fleeing an empty existence in New York City, takes a journey with his mistress to one of the few remaining areas of the world not yet touched by civilization-the upper reaches of a great South American river. The Lost Steps describes his search, his adventures, and the remarkable decision he makes in a village that seems to be truly outside history.

"An erudite yet absorbing adventure story. . . A book full of riches-stylistic, sensory, visual." New York Times Book Review

"The greatest novel to have appeared in Latin America in our time." Le Figaro Littéraire

"Extraordinary." The New Yorker

Perhaps Cuba's most important intellectual figure of the twentieth century, Alejo Carpentier (1904-1980) was a novelist, a classically trained pianist and musicologist, a producer of avant-garde radio programming, and an influential theorist of politics and literature. Best known for his novels, Carpentier also collaborated with such luminaries as Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Georges Bataille, and Antonin Artaud. Born in Havana, he lived for many years in France and Venezuela but returned to Cuba after the 1959 revolution.

5 out of 5 stars Pretentious? Moi?.......2007-07-30

Well, any book that requires you to know a lot can be accused of being pretentious. This book expects the reader to have a passing knowledge of Latin American geography, botany, zoology, religion, some classical music, some 20th century world history, some vocabulary.... well, it just expects you to be a literate reader. You know, the kind of person that would read The New Yorker instead of Seventeen.

This, to me, is the most fascinating thing about "Pasos Perdidos/The Lost Steps," in that it challenges the reader to apply everything that he or she might have learned along the way in life, and get a thrill from doing so.

Carpentier is one of the neobaroque writers who explore how the Latin American landscape and political culture contribute an entire new aesthetic to the world heritage, taking certain elements from the Spanish baroque but hybridizing it in a new climate, with new indigenous elements to form a completely new style of baroque culture. The moment, for example, that the narrator begins composing his original score, is the moment that he emerges from the Roman Catholic Mass in which he has been baptized (previously he was a cultural Lutheran), and gazes upon the liana vines hanging from the trees, and remembers strains of a Palestrina counterpoint. This fusion of American landscape, Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation ideology of incarnation and European aesthetic heritage is what (in)forms the American Baroque for Carpentier.

Yeah, I love a good excuse to be "pretentious" myself, now and then. Thanks for the opportunity! :D

3 out of 5 stars Not quite up to Under the Volcano.......2006-05-16

This book reminded me lots of Malcolm Lowry's "Under the Volcano". In both books the self-destructive main character sort of moves from fascinating episode to episode, while the overall plots are seemingly not that relevant. In both books, these episodes take place in exotic, vividly described Latin locales. Also, in both books, there is bunches of deep philosophizing and erudition, which don?t make for the easiest reading around.

All in all, I enjoyed "Lost Steps" as I enjoyed "Under the Volcano". Somehow I feel Lowry?s work is the greater. Perhaps the autobiographical tint in "Lost Steps" contributes to somewhat mundane finale. And some of the moments of philosopy do get grating. But this is still very good stuff, and I do recommend it for those inclined towards very serious fiction.

3 out of 5 stars Following Jaded Footsteps.......2005-11-14

I first heard of,'Lost Steps' about the time of its author's death in 1980 and ticked it off for a future reading that has waited more than two and a half decades. It's a big prize winner, carrying cult status. But these attributes notwithstanding, I found it too ponderous to raise an hurrah.Latin American 'magic realsim', I suggest, was more of a novelty when,'Lost Steps' made its mark. Jaded bougeoise seeks to revamp his creative energies in Amazonian jungle by contact with 'primitive' indians, their instruments and culture. Within the text the narrator flags that this surrealist motive had wearied during its halcyon days of the 20s and 30s. More than once Rene Daumal's,'Mt Analogue' sprang to mind with similar 'deep' pronoucements and promises of and from an enchanted world. One could say the piling of metaphor upon metaphor entirely expresses the fecudity of tropical forests or the baroque tendencies of an angst-ridden, fatigued intellectual. But why don't these similar excesses beleaguer Cormac McCarthy's great,'Blood Meridian'? Is it that McCarthy's sensibilities are closer to ours and that for all his biblical portent, he is more open to the aesthetic and moral disorder that we inhabit? Carpentier refuses to drop his moral superiority during brilliant reveries of geology, birds, music, and whatever. And he doesn't like 'back there' in the city. For me, the battle wasn't with the musical erudition but the canopy of hyperbole that shaded too much of the ground life. The action was sluggish, and the presumtions that the reader might be enlightened by strings of proper nouns that lack explanatory power, a trifle too demanding. Perhaps the narrator's prayer for a poetry of the city equal to that of an Amazonian snail shell was answered within a few years by Bobby Rauschenberg's art. He ferreted stuff from New York's gutters and junkshops to make a gregarious art that would stupify Carpentier's stuffy, opinionated narrator and render those earlier Surrealists' excursions into the second hand as so much preciousness.

5 out of 5 stars Latin American Classic.......2003-01-10

This great adventure novel was first published in 1953 and many of the scenes in this book seem prototypes for others I've come across in Latin American fiction. It is a story of a modern, educated, well traveled man, fleeing from the horrors of Europe leading up to WWII, to the Americas, who is then transposed into a world where the people still live in the stone age, a hidden city in the jungle and a bubble in time.

Our hero & narrator dreamed when young of becoming a great musician, but has long since sold himself out just for the sake of earning a living. He rarely sees his wife, an actress, because they both have busy schedules that seldom coincide. One day a fated encounter with a museum curator he knew in his youth leads him to a mission into the jungle to find and bring back the most primitive of musical instruments and to gain anthropological insights on the origins of music. The musician, who begins the trip with his mistress, ends up on his own cut off from civilization. In the jungle he at last able to find an inner peace and happiness, he finds a new woman, regains his health & vigor and at last is able to release the musical score he has always known was inside him. By the time his wife has a plane sent in as a publicity stunt to rescue him, he does not want to return.

This novel is deeply philosophical, in the end our musician can no longer find a place in either world, and the message is we can't go back, also theories about early humans which have been arrived at only by studying archaeological artifacts can only be flawed, to quote "New worlds had to be lived before they could be analyzed".

5 out of 5 stars One of the most memorable novels I've ever read.......2002-12-02

I've read thousands of novels that I cannot remember clearly, and this is one that has stayed with me for more than 20 years. I have thought of it repeatedly the last few months while walking in the woods and observing how the trails change with the seasons (a crucial part of the plot) and thinking about what life would be like if we were cut off from civilization the way the main character in this book is. The theme of this book is as beautifully executed as a classic opera and is especially meaningful if you are a music lover. I'm delighted to know that the book is still in print so that I can easily reread it and give it as a gift to people important to me.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not as engaging as the author's other books.......2007-09-30

My 7-year-old read this (with a little help). I thought it was appropriate for the target age level. This book contains both photographs and illustrations, and we enjoyed the photographs more, because they gave a much-needed sense of reality to the story. We also appreciated that the book explained how to pronounce the hard words like Tutankhamen "(too-tonk-AH-men)". And as a parent it was nice to see it pointed out that Howard Carter's stubborn search for Tut's tomb paid off in the end.

Still, we did not find this book as interesting as other books by Judy Donnelly (such as "Moonwalk" and "The Titanic"). It could be a matter of our particular interests, but after being blown away by those other two books of hers, this one kind of fell flat.

If your child is already interested in the subject matter (Tut's tomb, mummies in general, and the beliefs of ancient Egyptians), then this may be a really good book to get. If not, then I don't think "Tut's Mummy" is going to awaken that interest.

5 out of 5 stars tut's mummiy:lost and found.......2007-05-24

This book is great perfect for 6-8 year old . It gave them a good idea of who king tut was , how his tomb was found, by whom and what it took entailed. It was really helpful for them to read before seeing the exhibit and they still enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Timely subject.......2007-03-11

The subject matter of this book is timely since there is currently an exhibition on King Tut's tomb and treasures in the United States. The text is accessible considering this is a Step 4 book.

3 out of 5 stars tut's mummy... lost and found .......2007-01-19

I liked this book because it had a lot of detail and talked about everything they did to get the mummy ready for the tomb. It also talked about everything that they did for the funeral. It was very informational because it talked about Tut's past and future. This book reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode where Tut's mummy comes to life and haunts people! Creepy!

4 out of 5 stars Inject joy of the discovery of the ancient world into a kid.......2006-04-25

My kids love this book. It's engaging, fast moving (especially great considering how thorough it is), and has nice photos. After reading this book my 6 year old daughter is excited to grow up and find King Tut's father's tomb.

5 out of 5 stars Appropriate in all ways for the target age group.......2007-09-30

My 7-year-old read this (with a little help), and we were both fascinated. The story is told accurately but with sensitivity to the age level. It satisfied my son's curiosity, and he understood what a tragedy it was, without being overwhelmed with horrifying details. It was explained what went wrong, and there was reassurance that we had learned from the mistakes. And I liked the follow-up about how Robert Ballard and his crew found the Titanic years later.
Great illustrations, too, showing period clothing, etc.
This is a really nice little book that seems to me appropriate in all ways for kids about age 7-9. And if you're getting this, go ahead and get "Moonwalk" by the same author. That one was downright exciting.

In 1912 a magnisafint new ship namd the TITANIC was made. Peopol clamed it an unsincaboul ship. Why? The titanic did`t have one bottom it had two. Then at last the titanic set sail. Then one night in the crows nest one of the men saw a iceberg. Then another man rang a bell and shouted ICE BERG RIGHT AHEAD! but they saw it too late. the titanic hit the iceberg on the starbord side.and the engons stoped and the ship stoped move ing. the titanic begen to sink.it sank hier and hier and hier then a crashing and booming and craking sound was herd. the titanic split in two.while the bow section sank down to the bottom of the ocean the stern section stuck up and began its final plung to the bottom of the ocean 78 Years later dr. Robert balerd descoverd the titanic sank in two insted of sinking in one.

5 out of 5 stars Beginnings and Endings........2002-09-14

This wonderful children's book explains the history of the ill-fated ship, from the beginning of its maiden voyage in England to the discovery of the boat at the bottom of the ocean depths by Dr. Robert Ballard. The illustrations are lively and vibrant, giving depth to the easy to understand, yet enchanting text. I have read several children's books about the Titanic and this one seems to have the best of everything.

5 out of 5 stars Well Written and Educational.......2000-10-13

This fabulous children's book recounts with wonderful illustrations and simple language the tragic and familiar story of the Titanic. When the movie came out my children (then 5 and 8) were not allowed to watch it (why ask for nightmares? ). This book, carefully written with attention to detail, was sufficient to satisfy their need to know about this event in a manner that was sensitive, appropriate and accurate. There is even a picture in the first chapter that shows a cut-away style picture of how the ship was set-up: "Fancy rooms" on the top decks, swimming pool and squash courts at the bottom, and all kinds of rooms in between. Someday my children will be old enough to handle the feelings that the movie evokes, but until then, (since we live in Washington State) I want to be able to use a ferry once in a while! I'm very thankful for this well written, historical children's book!

Arthur and DW are having trouble figuring out why Baby Kate is so unhappy, but Pal knows why, and goes about helping her out. With large type and an entertaining story featuring beloved characters, this beginning reader will help young beginners read. It also includes two sets of stickers -- one group to stick over words in the story and one set to create your own story about Arthur and DW -- over 50 stickers altogether. Very nice little book.

4 out of 5 stars Simple But Sweet.......2001-05-06

This simple but sweet 'Arthur' work is probably aimed at a younger audience than the main targets of the T.V. show- 3rd graders, however, like all 'Arthur' works, it can appeal to all ages. The plot is something of a simple mystery that should work the brains of youngsters, and at least amuse the older readers. The illustrations are probably the best part of the book, each page is vividly illustrated in full color with plenty of ambient background details as well. My only complaint is that Marc gets some of the details wrong. For example, D.W. gets her face painted as a cat, and on the very next page, it is gone. Also, the number of pink stripes on outfit seems to keep changing. (Okay, okay, one gets bored.) Overall, excellent work though.

    Book Description

If you have always thought that Reiki was wonderful but "something was missing," then join us in the adventure of resurrecting the rest Reiki. This book contains the channeled words of Wei Chi, a 5000 year old Tibetan monk and one of the original creators of the healing system which we, today, call Reiki.

Wei Chi delineates the philosophies and methods which were not brought forth by Usui, making Reiki more holistic, cause-oriented and client-centered. Hailed by Reiki practitioners and teachers across the country as empowering, provocative and transformational. Not to be missed by anyone interested in energetic healing.

5 out of 5 stars Student of Reiki-Future student of Wei Chi Reiki.......2004-02-14

As a 2nd degree Reiki student who was in the midst of deciding what master Rekie teacher I would use for the rest of my teaching I found this book extremely interseting and informative. After reading the negative reviews and actually having the Wei-Chi Reiki used on myself it is obvious to me that these people are not as enlightened as they wish to think, for negativity of that level is unhealthy and not of the energy that this teacher would want using his work. I have been exposed to this new element of Reiki and found it to be extremely powerful. I will be working with these teachers prior to getting my Reiki Masters so that I will have more to offer the community.

    4 out of 5 stars Insightful Information.......2003-09-26

This book is on my suggested reading list for my Reiki classes. As a Reiki master-teacher, I have sought out any material that supports more self participation and responsibility of clients in a healing event. It is easy to place the fate of our own health into the hands of a healer, and I find this channeled writing refreshing and full of positive information for healers as well as their clients. Considering that all Reiki masters are "channels" of Reiki energy, I am comfortable with channeled materials when they come with the highest of intentions. All I had to do was pick up this book and feel the good energy coming from it to know that the material is authentic.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it.... And decide for yourself..........2003-01-12

In reading the "not so good" reviews below, I could swear that I hear a little entrenched dogma rearing it's head.

Having been in various forms of energetic healing now, including Reiki (3rd degree), and having taken the time to compare, I did find Reiki to be "missing something"... and that "something" (lack of client participation) is zeroed in on like a laser in this book. (Do Reiki "masters" really just want clients to walk in, lay down, remain silent, and leave as soon as the session is over? What about the client making conscious decisions and participating in their own recovery... gaining the experience of finding out how to empower themselves in the process...?) It's a simple concept, which takes only a few words to explain, which is why this book is so short.

As much as I like what the book has to say in that regard, I'm not a trusting fan of channeled information, having seen some real "quacks" channel. So you'll get no polyanna "it's celestial!" from me. And I found myself skimming over most of the "enthusiastic criticism" of current Reiki by "Wei Chi". (The truly enlightened people I've met stay focused on the good and let the "bad" fall by the wayside...)

So, I'm not so sure about the authenticity of the "source"... but the message speaks volumes that all energy workers would benefit from paying attention to.

1 out of 5 stars Will the real Wei Chi stand up?.......2002-11-29

Reiki is a real healing process. One problem with being an open minded light seeker, is we are afraid to question the absurd. We are too accepting of anything couched in the trendy terms of the day. Yes I saw one of the authors in his robe do live channelling of Wei Chi with revelations as vague as a political candidate. We are to revere this information which ignores the slave existence of Tibetan peasants of that era, who gave all to the Temple. Why would a monk from a hazily identified time choose to visit Emery and Hensel, two unlicensed New Hampshire counselors with buy-by-mail degrees? Tell us fellas, the world awaits your wisdom.

2 out of 5 stars Not very useful.......2001-08-28

The amount of useful information in this book could have been condensed into a booklet of a few pages. I'm sure it must be thrilling to channel material directly from someone who claims to be one of the inventors of Reiki, but the authors essentially use their book to postulate that they have the real secrets of Reiki and that attending their workshops is the only way to get the correct techniques as they were originally intended. The only new information that the book provides is based in common sense and obvious to anyone who has practiced much, anyway: First, clients must accept responsibility for their own health --Reiki is intended to be a helping step, not an ongoing "crutch" for people who want someone else to "fix" them. Second, the symbols don't inherently contain any power, they are only a technique for the practitioner to focus his or her energy. Neither of these ideas are a big surprise to anyone who works with the body and healing energy, of any technique or school, whether it is Reiki, Healing Touch, or even simple prayer therapy. It isn't that I dislike this book so much, it just isn't particularly helpful. And if the authors are going to condemn the Usui school for using Reiki to make money, they should at least provide a little more useful information in the books they are selling, rather than promote their own business endeavors. The irony is too obvious to ignore.

4 out of 5 stars The Treasure of The Lost Lagoon by Geoffrey Hayes.......2000-04-09

I smell a rat. Sid Rat, that is. In this enchanting Otto andUncle Tooth adventure, Otto tries to teach his friend, Ducky Doodle, the values of honesty and good, clean fun. Sid Rat has other ideas, however. When Otto and Doodle discover a sunken treasure chest, Sid Rat and his gang of weasals trick Doodle into believing that they will help him retrieve the treasure from the bottom of Lost Lagoon and let Doodle claim it all for himself. The plan changes, of course, as soon as Doodle brings Sid to the place where the treasure is buried. Will Doodle's true friends, Otto and Uncle Tooth, save him? What will they find in the treasure chest? It is worth reading this charming tale to find out. The story combines just the right amount of mystery and adventure, so kids will be intrigued, but not necessarily frightened. It also touches upon such lessons as friendship, hard work, honesty and responsibility. The story is perfect for the 6-8 year old set. It is simple, yet exciting. As a parent, I appreciated the fact that the story amused, yet taught valuable lessons. My daughter, on the other hand, liked the story because it was fun to read and it kept her in suspense. We both enjoyed the story because it left my daughter wanting to READ more. We would both definitely recommend it!

          Book Description

The Lost Steps (Les Pas perdus) is André Breton’s first collection of critical and polemical essays. Composed between 1917 and 1923, these pieces trace his evolution during the years when he was emerging as a central figure in French (and European) intellectual life. They chronicle his tumultuous passage through the Dada movement, proclaim his explosive views on Modernism and its heroes, and herald the emergence of Surrealism itself. Along the way, we are given Breton’s serious commentaries on his Modernist predecessors, Guillaume Apollinaire and Alfred Jarry, followed by his not-so-serious Dada manifestoes.

Also included are portraits of Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, and Breton’s mysterious friend Jacques Vaché, as well as a crisis-by-crisis account of his dealing with Dada’s leader, Tristan Tzara. Finally, Breton offers a first glimpse of Surrealism, the movement that was forever after identified with his name and that stands as a defining force in twentieth-century aesthetics.
