Book Description

With the nation at war in the 1940s, twenty-two-year-old Jack Valenti flew fifty-one combat missions as the pilot of a B-25 attack bomber with the 12th Air Force based in Italy. In the 1960s, with the nation reeling from the assassination of a beloved president and becoming embroiled in a far different kind of war in Vietnam, he was in that fateful Dallas motorcade in 1963, flew back to Washington with the new president, and for three years worked in the inner circle of the White House as special assistant to President Lyndon Johnson. Then, for the next thirty-eight years, with American society and popular culture undergoing a revolutionary transformation, Valenti was the public face of Hollywood in his capacity as head of the Motion Picture Association of America.

Been there, done that, indeed. Texas-born and Harvard-educated, Valenti has led several lives, any one of which could have provided ample material for an unforgettable memoir. As it is, This Time, This Place is the gripping story of a man who saw the terrible face of war while fighting with skill and bravery for his country; who was in the room, listening, participating, and remembering, as political decisions were made that would benefit or devastate countless lives in this country and on the other side of the world; and who championed the interest of the vast and globally influential movie industry with tenacity and vision. The list of boldface names whom Valenti knew and with whom he worked is as varied as it is astonishing in number. Aside
from LBJ, there were Jack and Bobby Kennedy, Kirk Douglas, Frank Sinatra, Robert McNamara, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Julia Roberts, Cary Grant, Lew Wasserman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas, Warren Beatty, and Bill Clinton, to begin a very long list.

The life of a man who earned both the Distinguished Flying Cross and his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is inherently intriguing, but Valenti’s warm, sometimes rueful, always engaging account gives this memoir a depth of humanity and a taste of life’s unpredictability that will linger long after you turn the final page. From growing up poor but largely oblivious to that fact in a hardscrabble neighborhood of Greek and Italian immigrants in Houston to rising to the highest summits both of national government and Hollywood, This Time, This Place is a candid and clear-eyed reflection of the joys and sorrows, ambitions and disappointments, of a life fully recognizable in its extraordinary variety. It is also a sweeping and important historical record, written by a brilliantly successful man who helped to shape politics and entertainment in the second half of the twentieth century, and who always found himself in the center of the current storm.

1 out of 5 stars Saint Jack.......2007-09-21

One must be a very dedicated movie or Jack Valenti watcher to plough all the way through this tome. Apart from the timing which cannot be faulted - he died shortly after the book was published: the book is more a diary than a literary work. Except for the opening chapter on the assassination of JFK, which is good and compelling writing, the remainder stretched incredulity a little too far.
If we are to believe what Mr Valenti tells us about himself, we should not be surprised that at the books completion, the Almighty whisked him off to heaven to be at his right hand. A more Saintly man never lived beyond the Vatican.
We learn that he started life very poor - not even any shoes. We also learn that his close relatives were very rich. That confused me. I thought these old Sicilian families stuck together. Or is that only in the Mafia? One of these relatives who did not feel able to buy little Jack any shoes, did give him a job however. The salary was not sufficient for the future $1.3 million a year boss of MPAA, so he lied to take the time off to solicit work at Humble Oil which was successful. Little Jack clearly had a talent for ingratiating himself into the affections of those who could help him. First it was the HR lady who gave him his first job at Humble. Then it was the head of the advertising department who put him to work there. Work: I use the word loosely as he seems to have spent his time travelling around the country keeping his boss from being lonely. He must have been a very seductive little chap.
Then the war intervened. Now I thought, this is where it gets interesting. He reminds us frequently that he was a war hero, so I was very keen to learn more. Unfortunately modesty prevented him from sharing with us any daring-do that he was involved in. Other than telling us that the Luftwaffe fighters held no terrors for him - indeed, he actually says that they were no problem to him. Well that's a first. I must have more than 30 books on WWII aerial combat, and I never read that before. Could it be that all the others were spoofing? We do learn at great length his mile by mile journey back to America from Italy. The war was over by this time, but low cloud and rain was more formidable than the Luftwaffe it seems.
Once back to civilian life, he takes advantage of the GI Bill and goes to Harvard. If he goes on about his time at Harvard to his everyday listeners as he does in his book, there can be few American who don't know that Jack Valenti went to Harvard. Upon completion of his course he goes back to Humble Oil. This is the second time they have him back. He learns as much as he can from them, sets up a company with a partner and promptly leaves Humble Oil. Using what he learnt from Humble he solicits business from Humble competitors. This is a life long habit of Jack's. He ingratiates himself with people until they are of no more value; then he drops them. He did that with President Johnson after he learnt that Johnson was not going to seek re-election. He would have done it to MPAA and gone to Columbia Pictures, but his devoted wife of God knows how many years wouldn't go to Los Angeles with him. Washington was more important than Jack it seems. She did offer to let him commute once a week from DC to LA.
It is at this point in the book that one loses the will to live. It becomes a page after page catalogue of the rich and famous who Jack loved deeply, and they him. Pick at random any Name from the A List, and they - and of course their gorgeous spouses, were close personal friends of the Valenti's. There is not an enemy in sight - he even had a good word for the Luftwaffe! But then this is a work more interesting for what it doesn't say than for what it does. He never mentions that he lead a crusade to prevent VCRs being introduced into America. He takes full credit for the `original' introduction of a film rating system. He expects the readers not to notice that the British Board of Film Censors has been rating movies since 1912. It is also interesting that Jack never ever mentions the British film industry. He mentions, and praises British actors and directors, but never identifies them as such. He does every other country that has a film industry. Perhaps under the overcast skies of grey old London lurk a few skeletons that Jack would prefer to keep in the cupboard.
After one has waded through pages and pages of Hollywood's `Who's Who', the book is completed with the unsurprising information that all of his three children are `...movie star beautiful, and they are all outstandingly successful.' No kidding. He even tells us that his grandchildren are perfect.
Jack Valent's life story could have been an enthralling read had it been an `unauthorised version' by Kitty Kelly or similar. Instead, it is a very boring exercise in self aggrandisement. It is said that before one writes a book, one should identify your audience. The only audience for this book is the Hollywood Hoorays who will enjoy what is written about themselves, and think kindly about Jack - and of course his children.
Well done Jack. Not so much a book, more an advertising brochure for the Valenti dynasty.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read but Lacks Bite .......2007-07-15

In a sense this is two books in one. Valenti (apart from his war years) had two very different careers - as a valued aide to President Lyndon Johnson and latterly as President Motion Picture Association of America. He did sterling work in both roles.

Almost anything written about Johnson is fascinating and Valenti keeps that legend going. The author never fails to see good in people and like other Johnson aides such as Joe Califano, seemed to have a genuine love for the towering Texan.

Valenti's opening chapter on the dreadful events of November 22nd 1963 is compelling reading. The author also writes well on the meetings and decision processes that encouraged LBJ to enlarge the war in Vietnam. For those with rose tinted glasses who believe JFK would have taken the US out of Vietnam before it became a quagmire, Valenti makes it quite clear that the bulk of LBJ's Vietnam advisors were Kennedy people. Overall the section on Johnson and the White House years is enjoyable reading. The same can not be said for his MPAA memoir.

Part of the problem is that Valenti is so gushing in his praise of everyone. The number of "radiantly beautiful" or "dazzling" wives he met with adorable offspring is mind-blowing. This man would have something good to say about the devil! He alludes very gingerly to the excesses of and infatuation with Hollywood, but never provides any depth.

Valenti - who wrote a book on communication - is a wonderful writer with a flowing style that is a joy to read. It is a pity that he did not bring greater depth and I think honesty to his MPAA career.

4 out of 5 stars A Truly American Story.......2007-07-05

Jack Valenti's memoir "This Time, This Place: My Life in War, The White House, and Hollywood" tells an authentically American story. Valenti, the grandson of a Sicilian immigrant, rises from his working class roots to:
* win the Distinguished Flying Cross (WWII)
* attend Harvard Business School (Veterans Bill)
* start his own successful business
* become the aide de camp to a US President (Lyndon Johnson)
* and, become the chief lobbyist and defender of the motion picture industry for four decades.

Valenti's book opens with a flashback to Dallas, Texas on November 23, 1963 as he rode in the fateful Presidential motorcade that passed the Texas Book Depository with Lee Oswald's rifle pointed at President John Kennedy. Before the day was over, he was THE confident and consigliore to a new US President, Lyndon Johnson, overseeing the president's speeches, decided whom he would see and where he would go to speak. His chronicle of his White House years reads like a fast-paced novel and has plenty of detail to satisfy historians.

"This Time, This Place" provides important events in Valenti's early formation which were the underpinnings of a remarkable life. As a working class kid from Houston, he watched his grocer grandfather practice local politics and made his own first speech at the age of 10, advocating the reelection of the Sheriff. He worked as movie usher during high school, and got himself elected class president as a night student at the University of Houston.

In 1943, he joined the Army Air Corps, taking his first solo flight only after nine hours of instruction. He piloted 51 bombing missions over Europe in a B25 winning the Distinguished Flying Cross. His descriptions of these years are among the most vivid in this book. His prose throbs with memories of an experience that was simultaneously exhilarating, terrifying and "brutal."

The section on the Hollywood years is looser. Valenti's good-old-boy Texas story-telling comes out. He is more willing to tell tales, poking fun at some of the pompous behavior and trappings of the Motion Picture Industry's celebrities.

"This Time,This Place" is told straightforwardly, acknowledging debts, sketching people he knew and giving a not entirely flattering view of himself. His self-portrait is one of restlessness, and a strong commitment to advancement.

This is a man that senators, congressman and presidents readily took calls from. His formula was simple, "It is rooted in the ability to engage in courtship, to cosset talent, to understand the human condition and to make decisions fast." He exuded charm and was able to establish relationships by being everyone's pal but he never left empty-handed.

Jack Valenti died two years after his retirement from the Motion Picture Association of America in April, 2007.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-07-04

Jack Valenti was both a witness to, and an instrument of, history and his autobiography presents the fascinating elements of his life and all those that he came across. Written in a very easy to read, yet eloquent, style (you can hear Valenti speaking these words)the book should be read by anyone interested in the Washington, the Great Society, and movie industry scenes.

3 out of 5 stars Valenti's Life.......2007-06-27

A memoir of someone (now deceased) who -- after brave service in World War II -- spent time in two workplaces that most would find very interesting, The White House and Hollywood. While some stories within the book are interesting, especially the historical notes on the Johnson Administration, most are very shallow.

It is the life story of a bright, ambitious man from the hinterlands who happened to be in all the right places and took full advantage of his career opportunities. He is the type of person who always has his eye fixed on the main chance ... and toward the most important person in the room.

The prose drips with sincerity and soars with hyperbole. Mr. Valenti said about his friendship with Don Imus and Bernard McGuirk (whose own careers cratered after this book went to press), he had instant fame from being on Imus In the Morning "...however fleeting!" I think Mr. Valenti's fame indeed will be fleeting since it is primarily derived from the reflection of others.

Book Description

Detective John Cardinal is on the hunt for an ingenious killer even as he mourns his own wife’s tragic death in this thriller of heart-stopping suspense
Autumn has arrived in Algonquin Bay, and with it an unusual spate of suicides. The most shocking victim yet is Detective John Cardinal’s wife, who has finally succumbed to her battle with manic depression. As Cardinal takes time to grieve, his partner, Lise Delorme, handles an unsavory assignment: a young girl appears in a series of unspeakable photos being traded online, and background elements indicate she lives in Algonquin Bay. Delorme is desperate to find the girl before she suffers more abuse.
When Cardinal receives a string of hateful anonymous notes about his wife’s death, he begins to suspect homicide. His colleagues believe he is too distraught to think clearly, and he’s forced to investigate alone. In doing so, he comes up against a brand of killer neither he—nor the reader—has ever seen before.
In his most masterful and thrilling novel yet, Giles Blunt confirms his reputation as a rising international star in crime fiction, and positions Detective John Cardinal among the finest characters in the genre.

3 out of 5 stars Beware.......2007-09-22

This is a well written murder mystery. Despite undisputable evidence, detective John Cardinal has a nagging suspicion that a shocking suicide isn't what it seems. But beware, there is plenty of grief and depression described in vivid detail in this story as the killer is revealed. It's not for everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Half of this series is great..........2007-08-08

...but it's not two of the books, it's half of each book.

I've read the 4 books in this series over the past month and they all have the same problem in my opinion. The chapters which involve the cops Cardinal and Delorme are terrific, but the books contain many chapters which instead follow the criminals involved and I found them uniformly dull and unbelievable. I plodded through them just wanting them to be over.

I wish I could give the series a higher rating because I love the northern setting and the exploration of mental illness in a relationship. I was sorry to read the event of the first chapter of this one despite the lack of surprise due to the foreshadowing of another relationship throughout the series. I was also sorry to see Cardinal's past criminal act swept under the rug as the series progressed. If another book appears in the series I'll read it, but I wish the author would change his formula and keep his main characters involved throughout the book.

5 out of 5 stars Into the dark places.......2007-06-17

John Cardinal, a small-town policeman, seems pretty run-of-the mill, like his community. Algonquin Bay sits on a lake, surrounded by Northern Ontario rocky forests. There are the usual little crimes and petty injustices to deal with. One night, however, while on the discomforting task of exposing an adultery situation, John is called to an accident scene. A woman has fallen from a new high rise. Or was she pushed? Or did she jump? This is of particular importance to John, because it turns out the woman is his wife, Catherine.

A photographer who often went out on solitary picture excursions - even in an Ontario winter - Catherine is also a depressive. She's been in the dark places. She's been hospitalised several times, returning to a warm homecoming and declaring "How lucky I am!" to have a family which can deal with her problems. That luck seems to have run out, or is it eroded? The last option, suicide, appears to be the cause of her death. There's even a note: "By the time you read this . . .". That should close the case and John Cardinal should take some time to work through his grief. His own dark time is just beginning.

John and Catherine were together too long and they knew each other too well for this copper to rest on easy answers. The note is an enigma, not clarified by some disturbing mail John receives. Little bits of information, imparted willingly or inadvertently, build suspicions in his mind, and he must follow them through. To get to the resolution, John encounters some disturbing elements. A child pornography "ring" on the Internet has reached his town. In fact, it might be centred in Algonquin Bay as Cardinal's colleague Lise Delorme is undertaking to determine. How dark is that news to a town where vulnerable children are supposed to be a rarity? A psychiatrist, Dr Frederick Bell, the doctor counselling Catherine, has a checkered background. What relevance do all these things have to the death of his wife?

A good mystery should command your attention, and Giles Blunt gets you up and running from the opening pages. He weaves an intricate tale, populated by some fascinating characters. He portrays them skillfully - none are seriously overdrawn, and all are plausible. The plot shifts are carefully handled, but Blunt isn't a mystery "mechanic". Events are under the control of the people involved and it's their reactions to changing circumstances that keep this book interesting. If you're a mystery buff, this should make a welcome addition to your collection. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

5 out of 5 stars O Canada.......2007-06-14

Don't often read mysterys set in Canada and written by a Canadian. Blunt has created a special place with his Algonquin Bay CID unit. Great read, easy to digest and remember the story line. The characters are fleshed out. I recommend his entire series.

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next one!.......2007-05-28

Having recently read all of Giles Blunt's previous books featuring Cardinal and Delorme, I devoured this one in a single day. It's his best yet, with less of the overt evil and grisly detail of some of the earlier books, but even more of the superb character study and psychological insight. The evil in this book is subtler, and it's completely believable.

Simply put, Blunt is a terrific writer. His prose is crisp and unfussy, yet still evocative and moving. He knows his setting thoroughly and recreates it so effectively that even if you've never been to his small Ontario city, you feel that you know it well too. His characters are vividly drawn and very real; I find myself thinking about Cardinal and Delorme after I've finished of the books, which is as much as you can ask from any writer.

5 out of 5 stars Great for understanding some trends blowing through the church today.......2007-01-21

If you have attempted to read through books like the series David Wells wrote (No Place for Truth, God in the Wasteland, Losing Our Virtue, and Above All Earthly Pow'rs), but found them cumbersome and difficult, a shorter and easier-to-read option is Gary Gilley's two works This Little Church Went to Market and This Little Church Stayed Home. The second of these two is what this reviewer has recently completed. Gilley has subtitled this book, A Faithful Church In Deceptive Times. Good choice. Let me say at the outset that both books should be read. They will open your eyes. While not as in-depth and thorough as the work Wells has done, the audience Gilley will speak most effectively to is the average lay person, not the scholar or professional minister who is more the target of Wells. That being said, many pastors who have been caught up in "fad Christianity" would benefit from This Little Church Stayed Home.

This Little Church has four sections dividing up fifteen chapters. Section 1 (chapters 1-5) explains postmodernism and how this philosophical outlook has impacted the church's view on propositional truth. Section II (chapters 6-8) deals with the church's responsibility to build up the body of Christ, giving attention to biblical church growth. Section III (chapters 9-11) has to do with the Bible, specifically, and how that is currently being misused and misinterpreted by some in order to push their distorted concepts of the gospel. Section IV (chapters 12-15) explains current challenges to the church: mysticism and the Emergent Church. There is more to these chapters than I have touched on, but these descriptions are only broad summaries.

Not enough good things could be said about This Little Church. Gilley takes on the dangers of the current fad of mysticism sweeping through the church, and calls the Emergent Church movement what it is: false teaching. Most commendable is his absence of fear in naming some of the biggest names in evangelicalism (and some not so big) in an effort to warn the church of heretical teaching. Some examples include Robert Schuller (p. 74), a poster boy for false teaching, Rick Warren (pp. 89-100), Dallas Willard and Richard Foster (p. 117), Karen Mains, wife of radio teacher, David Mains (pp. 137-38), David Seamand, who has appeared on Focus on the Family with James Dobson (pp. 138-39), Greg Boyd (p. 139), and George Barna (pp. 174-78). Other names are mentioned as well, but are not as readily recognizable. I wish there were more Christian leaders like Gilley who had the backbone to say what needs to be said and point out who specifically has strayed away from orthodoxy. Leaders are so often afraid to do this for fear of being accused of being judgmental, that they cower away from carrying out their God-given responsibility. Examples of this in Scripture include 1 Timothy 1:20, 3 John 9, and 2 Timothy 2:17, where Paul compares the influence of Hymenaeus and Philetus to the spreading of gangrene.

An example of his straightforward style is found in this quote: "Celebration of Discipline alone, not even referencing [Richard] Foster's other writings and teachings and ministries, is a virtual encyclopedia of theological error. We would be hard pressed to find in one so-called evangelical volume such a composite of false teaching" (p. 119). Bold and accurate! Other examples are found when he confronts Rick Warren's The Purpose-Driven Church and The Purpose-Driven Life: "Both, for instance, offer some good sound advice, helpful biblical insight and practical suggestions---and both are riddled with errors throughout" (p. 89); "In Warren's gospel presentations no mention is made of sin, repentance or even the Cross" (p. 90); "I found forty-two biblical inaccuracies, eighteen out-of-context passages of Scripture, supposedly used to prove his point, and another nine distorted translations" (p. 91). In the chapter in which these quotes are found, Gilley has a subsection entitled "Torturing Scripture," where he lists ten specific examples where Warren has clearly misrepresented the Bible.

This is a great read for any Christian who wants to understand some of the modern winds currently blowing through the church. It would be highly profitable to use this book for a Sunday School class or mid-week group discussion. Buy it, read it, pass it on. - Ray Hammond, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

5 out of 5 stars A Prophetic Cry For A Return to Sound Doctrine (Titus 2:1).......2006-12-26

I must admit that I was intrigued by Dr. Gilley's book from my reading of his first two books THIS LITTLE CHURCH WENT TO MARKET and I JUST WANTED MORE LAND (a book on the prayer of Jabez). Both books were excellent in both their content, they were short but detailed reads, and Dr. Gilley always seeks to help the reader grasp what the Scriptures teach against the tide of error.

In this book, Dr. Gilley continues this biblical tradition by exposing both the errors of false exegesis from postmodernist to the errors of mysticism (charismatics) and the emergent church movements. Throughout his book, Gilley is seeking to point the reader (and the Church) to the authority of Scripture. In fact, in this book you won't find a book full of Dr. Gilley's thoughts but you will find sound biblical teaching (1 Timothy 4:16).

Ovearll I highly recommend this book especially to church leaders (Titus 1:5). In an age full of false doctrines and misleading voices, we must stay grounded in the Word of God (John 10:27-29). Thankfully Dr. Gilley's book helps us do just that.

5 out of 5 stars Stay faithful in deceptive times.......2006-09-05

Stay faithful in deceptive times, September 5, 2006
Are you confused at all by what Modernism, Postmodernism, and Mysticism means? Do you have unanswered questions about the Seeker-church or the Emergent Church Movement? Want a book that goes right to the facts that you can understand and be able to explain it to others? This book gives a brief historical background to these movements and what kind of impact this is having on today's Church.

Pastor Gary E. Gilley writes about the current trends and theological shifts that have taken place in the Evangelical Church in recent years. The author of this book asks the critical question; 'If everything we need in life and godliness is found in the knowledge of Christ, (2 Peter 1:3) why should the Church dabble around with anything else?

Gilley warns that it is dangerous for Christians to close their bibles. Pastor Gilley makes the convincing case that the Word of God is being displaced with substitutes such as; entertainment, drama, concerts, comic acts, etc. He also points out how many churches are using psychological therapies, which is distorting the biblical teaching of Salvation and Sanctification. The historical doctrines of the Christian Faith are being undermined.

He also covers the sometimes complex spectrum of Mysticism, and it's theology. The Emerging Church Movement is a form of classical, medieval Roman Catholic Mysticism dressed-up for Evangelicals. Gilley writes that some Christians by pursuing Mystical experiences has opened them up to a pseudo-Christianity that has the appearance of spirituality but not the substance.

5 out of 5 stars This Little Pastor Has Truth - Listen Up.......2006-08-20

It is sad to realize that Pastor Gary Gilley's new book will never come close to outselling Rick Warren's book "The Purpose Driven Life." The Christian Church in America would be far better off if it did. Makes perfect sense in this upside down society and Christian church that junk outsells truth by a factor of 1,000. American wealth and prosperity has dulled the church's collective gift of discernment.

Pastor Gilley starts his book with an excellent analysis of how the evangelical church of America in 2006 has arrived at its current status of downplaying doctrine, emphasizing worldly measures, and redefining the gospel message. Pastor Gilley provides a historical perspective of how the church has slowly lost its distinctiveness and has adopted the practices and worldview of the society. The discerning reader should quickly recognize the slippery slope that apostasy in the church is very subtle and happens slowly over a period of time, rather than in large chunks.

The centerpiece and strength of the book are Chapters 8-11 in which Pastor Gilley so accurately describes the approach and methodology of most American pastors. These pastors will utilize any pragmatic, secular marketing device in order to attract numbers and a crowd. They fail to recognize that the gospel is inherently offensive (1 Corinthians Ch. 1:18 and following). They use paraphrases of the bible that are highly suspect and claim them as authoritative scripture. In their quest to evangelize the world to the gospel, they end up changing the gospel. My biggest misgiving about the entire seeker-sensitive movement is that pastors may be providing false assurance to millions of people who attend church, but never really hear the offensive gospel of the necessity of God becoming a man who had to die to redeem those who chose to believe in his death, burial and resurrection.

The book ends with big challenges facing the church, namely the mysticism that has invaded the church. Typically, the mystics are Catholics or Gnostics who deny that rational bible study is possible and God can only be known through some form of feelings, imagination, personal visions, inner voices, or some repetitive practice that will provide enlightenment.

The emergent church is also described in the book. These are "churches" or groups in which there less organization and structure. Many of these meetings are avant-garde groups informally discussing spirituality and drinking their lattes. These groups are hard to describe clearly but they basically say that the bible is not to be relied upon and that truth is more of an individually determined process. Like Gilley writes, if there is no truth, then everyone's version of the truth is correct. Take that tenet to its logical conclusion and the outcome is scary.

Clearly, the American church is waist-deep in apostasy as predicted in both 1 and 2nd Timothy, among other places in the bible. The American Church of 2006 is best represented by the church of Laodicea (Revelation Ch. 3:14-22). Will the American church turn the tide and get back to the bible, or will the remnant holding to biblical truths be raptured out of the world first?

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT time!.......2004-04-17

This is a wonderful collection of the popular cartoons from The New Yorker. I have this book in my guest room and it always illicits such enthusiastic responses from my guests. If you're like me and always search for the BEK cartoons first thing when The New Yorker arrives, you will really appreciate this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious...........2004-04-12

You can flip to any page and you will get a laugh or a smile from the cleverness of Bruce Eric Kaplan. Some random quotes from the book:
"My name is Brett and I'll be the person you focus all your misplaced anger on for the evening."
--
"You can't keep comparing yourself to those skinny little aliens you see in movies."
--
"Don't walk away from me while I'm not paying any attention to you."

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting Collection.......2004-04-07

BEK's cartoons have a distinctive yet austere style. He seems to have put more emphasis on the writing than on the drawing. As Bob Mankoff, the cartoon editor of The New Yorker, of which BEK is a frequent contributor, once wrote: "It's not the ink, it's the think that makes a great cartoon." All in all, I thought it was an interesting collection.

5 out of 5 stars Feeling Bad, Depressed, Lonely, Buy this Book.......2004-04-02

BEK Does It Again. You don't have to wait every week to read his cartoons - It's all here in a fantastic new collection of cartoons. I don't know how he does it. You can keep reading and reading them over and over and laugh each time. When your favorite American Idol contestant gets voted off - pick up this book and it will all be okay.

Book Description

Today's young women are bombarded with messages contrary to the Christian life. They need a clear vision of purpose in order to walk as "princesses in God's court." For Such a Time as This: The Disciplines of Destiny, by Lisa Ryan, cohost of The 700 Club, helps women from the ages of twelve to twenty-five find their unique gifts and destinies. It draws on the biblical example of Esther, as well as modern-day role models, to deliver nugget-sized lessons on character traits such as courage, chastity, grace, and dignity. For Such a Time as This will transform young readers into mature women of God.

My teenage girl's youth group at church are reading this book and studying the Book of Esther. As their teacher, this book has been a wonderful learning tool and really opened the girls up to share their personal stories of what it's like to be a teenage girl in America today. They really enjoy Lisa's writing and have already asked to do another of her books in class. Thanks, Lisa for your book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-11-06

This book is written for the middle school ag.. hence the reason that the slang is so far off... (as noted in the previous reveiw) It is a great book about becoming a modern day Esther.

4 out of 5 stars Esther 101.......2002-04-30

Esther's story is my favorite story in the Bible. She was a very strong woman who was fearless (she was not afriad to be herself). Lisa Ryan has done a great job applying this fabulous story to life as a young woman today. I found that the writing was somewhat silly (Mrs. Ryan sometimes used slang never spoken by anyone outside of middle school), but the message was awesome. Every girl should read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book: two thumbs up!.......2002-04-05

This book covers a wide variety of topics, makes them relevant and understandable, and forces the reader to apply them to daily life. Great to use as a chapter-a-day devotional and encompasses everything a young girl should know!

Connie Briscoe's "The Perfect Life"- True what Tonya and Aaron did to Maxine was low down, but Maxine after 20 something years you're still holding a grudge against them. I say they did you a favor, you've got your husband and kids, move on girlfriend, move on. Lolita Files' "Three For The Road"- Adam took the cowardly way out to end his marriage to Lilibelle, but she found someone better in Chance Landry. The part of the story where she and Chance are having dinner and after a few drinks start singing songs from the Flintstones was so funny to me. Anita Bunkley's "This Time Around"- Danika you go girl for working your way to the top of that male dominated company, with your makeover now you're fierce. Why did you take Raymond back? He may do what he did to you again. I enjoyed this anthology.

THE PERFECT LIFE by Connie Briscoe
Maxine Davis has had it with her boring marriage and smart mouth teenagers. Even the neighborhood they live in is dull. Maxine misses the early days of their marriage - when they went out of their ways to please each other.

A phone call from her mother brings the shocking news of her aunt's death and brings her face to face with her cousin and best friend Tonya. They haven't spoken to each other in twenty years - not since Tonya stole Maxine's fiancé Aaron. What will it take for Maxine to see that she has THE PERFECT LIFE with Curtis?

Connie Briscoe brings to mind just how easy it is to take the people in your life for granted. Maxine's anger and resentment that she's allowed to fester over the years has blinded her to how truly blessed she is with her simple family.

THREE FOR THE ROAD by Lolita Files
Lillibelle Goldman's world is forever changed by the events of 9/11. Not because she lost a loved one, but because that's the day her husband chose to tell her that he's found someone else and wants out of their twenty-five year marriage.

Newly divorced and with the kids away at college, Lilli decides to do something she's only dreamed of - visit Las Vegas. She packs up her car and heads out only to have it stall out on the side of the road during a rain and hail storm. It's there that she meets Chance and his dog, Yancy, and together they opt to share the adventure. Neither of them is looking for romance, but can they resist the desire that soon broils between them?

Lolita Files will have readers smiling with this charmingly poignant tale. While it's sad to read about the demise of Lilli's longtime marriage, I had to admire her for having the guts to take a trip on her own rather than bemoan what could have been.

THIS TIME AROUND by Anita Bunkley
Anika Redmond has spent many years trying to work her way to the top of a male dominated company where she's been employed for the past twenty-two years. She came to work for Cranstar after the collapse of her marriage and put any hopes she may have had for marriage firmly out of her mind.

With a little encouragement from her friend and neighbor, Ming, Anika submits an entry into a competition. The prize? A complete makeover from a popular television program called `A New You.' She's stunned when she receives the phone call that she has been selected as one of the winners of the make over. Will it help her get the job of her dreams? Of course not. What it will do is bolster her sagging spirits and make her feel like a whole new woman with a promising future ahead of her and maybe she'll discover that she does indeed have a happy ending lurking just around the next corner.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this story. When I first read that Anika was going to undergo an extreme makeover I was stunned. Then as I read further into the story I realized that the make over didn't change who she is or her position in the company. It does bring a new and exciting aspect to how she feels about herself and how coworkers and associates view her.

Connie Briscoe, Lolita Files and Anita Bunkley bring a new outlook on life to women over forty with these three uplifting tales. These stories transcend racial barriers and make age seem like nothing more than a number. Each of these stories is very different in theme and tone but they all drive home the fact that women of all ages are beautiful and YOU ONLY GET BETTER as the years go by. For most women age is a sensitive issue, but these three authors tackle it extremely well and present women who readers could almost envy because of their spirit and determination to be themselves.

3 out of 5 stars You Mellow With Time.......2007-05-04

Maxine is a wife and mother, who at the age of 45 just feels as if she is unfulfilled, or maybe she's just not getting any attention. However, readers will learn that her unhappiness stems from something lurking from her past. Maxine never had the opportunity to close something that happened 20 years prior. When her aunt passes, she must travel to the funeral, and she's now face-to-face with those demons that she's suffered with in silence. Is there forgiveness in her future?

Three For the Road: Lolita Files

Spoiled since she was a child, Lilibelle has even managed to be spoiled in her adult life as well. Married to a rich and successful doctor for twenty five years, Lilibelle devotes her life to her family. Of all days to learn that life as you know it is changing without your knowledge, it's 9/11, an already painful day, yet Lilibelle learns that her husband is leaving her and wants a divorce. Devastated, Lilibelle does not know what to do. She's never had to be on her own. Is she capable of making her own decisions?

This Time Around: Anita Bunkley

Danika is a divorcee that has worked hard to climb the corporate ladder. Not really missing much as far as the social life goes, she's devoted all of her time to work. Her neighbor tells her about a contest that she feels will enhance Danika's life. Amazingly Danika is the winner of the contest, and believe it or not, it did really enhance her life and great things begin to happen with people taking notice. Danika is given an assignment in the scorching hot West Texas. Unfortunately, the scenery provides very little; however, a familiar face will be there. Is there still a little heat in the oven?

Just like fine wine,"You Only Get Better" with time. An overall decent read by great women, but times it was somewhat of a slow read.

For that time between hot flashes and social security when women are in emotional limbo, YOU ONLY GET BETTER, an anthology, by three bestselling authors is on point.

'The Perfect Life' by Connie Briscoe
Maxine has hated her cousin Tonya, who was her best friend, for 25 years. Weeks before graduating from college Tonya stole her fiancé and they have not spoken since. Sadly, Maxine has allowed the past to interfere with her outlook on her life with her husband. Still wallowing in self-pity, the death of Tonya's mother gives her a chance to revisit the past. Maxine attends the funeral, confronts her cousin, and Tonya apologizes. Can Maxine forgive her and embrace the good life she is now living or will she continue to short change herself?

'Three for the Road' by Lolita Files
As the horrific events of 9/11 is changing how America lives, Lilibelle's husband, of over 25 years, uses this time to invoke his own disaster. In Arizona at a convention, he tells her he is never coming home; he loves someone else. Always indulged by her parents, and then by her husband, Lili is devastated. She's alone for the first time in her life, but surprisingly she does not wilt, instead she metamorphoses. She heads for Las Vegas, meets a newly divorced man traveling with his dog and finds her footing. This chance meeting may be just the catalyst she needs to jumpstart her life.

'This Time Around' by Anita Bunkley
Danika has been divorced from her domineering husband for 25 years; he left because she was "too independent". She has since worked her way up in a male-dominated company. As soon as she is promoted, she has to take a newly acquired company and cut the staff by half. Is this a golden opportunity? The company is run by her controlling ex-husband, now widowed with two teenagers. Danika is the last person he wants to see especially under the current circumstances. With a complete physical makeover Danika exudes a jaunty confidence, but is she prepared to see her 'ex' and can she handle her first assignment without reviving the ghosts from their pasts?

YOU ONLY GET BETTER is for women of all ages, but it may be special for those who have reached 'that' plateau. The three novellas are sassy, uplifting and real.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful "mature" women characters who find love, peace and hope.......2007-03-07

This is "chick lit" about the older crowd--if you call late 40s-early 50s the older crowd.

Three bestselling authors tell three separate stories about women nearing 50 and in life-changing situations.

The Perfect Life -- Connie Briscoe (New York Times)

Teacher Maxine Davis has hated her childhood best friend (and cousin) because 25 years ago Tonya stole her fiancÇe. Hateful and unforgiving, the death of Tonya's mother gives Maxine a chance to look back to that fateful time. Maxine's mother cajoles her into going to the funeral. Cousin Tonya apologizes. Can Maxine ever forgive and again be part of Tonya's life? Could you?

Three for the Road -- Lolita Files (Essence and Blackboard)

New Yorker Lilibelle's shocking divorced comes on 9-1-1 when she locates her doctor husband in Arizona at a convention, and demands he come home because she is terrified. On that fateful day, he tells her he is never coming home; he loves someone else. Lili had always been indulged by her parents, and then by him. She is now alone in her empty nest. Travel with her across the country (sort of alone) on her trip to discovery, and a chance meeting with a newly divorced man. Can Lili let go of her need for control--and find love?

This Time Around -- Anita Bunkley (Blackboard)

Danika Redmond's single life came after her divorce--he couldn't handle her independence. Everyone he ever loved abandoned him--so he decided to leave her before she left him. She has worked her way up in a male-dominated corporation. When she is promoted, her first assignment is to go to a newly acquired company and cut the staff by half--run by her controlling ex-husband, now widowed with two teenager. He doesn't handle the fact that she is now "his boss" and could fire him. Will she be successful with this first important assignment? Will they get back together?

Minimally important to the story is the fact that the authors and the women in their stories are all African-Americans. I agree, "These fascinating women discover that life, love and everything else gets better with age!"

Armchair Interviews says: The read was fun and done quickly--in order to find out how each one handled that new life.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Focus on infant potty training .......2006-01-04

The author clearly believes you should train an infant and not use diapers. But then there isn't a clear plan for training a baby. This is kind of a mix of lots of ideas without a committment to one specific plan. Kind of confusing, not too helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Good beginning Overview.......2005-11-15

I think this was a good first book for parents about to tackle potty training. While as some have posted the author does clearly think infant training is best, other methods are also clearly presented and outlined. Use this book as a starting point. It outlines a few major methods. From this you should be able to decide which method you want to use and then focus your next book purchases.

5 out of 5 stars Strength in many approaches.......2005-04-25

I found this book to be infinitely helpful in toilet training my daughter. Because the author presents four different methods of potty training, she isn't obligated to advocate her method and dismiss competing methods as "wrong". Acknowledging that there are many correct ways to toilet-train a child is something that few authors have the latitude or courage to admit. This book also presents practical, non-judgemental advice regarding which method may work best in different family situations. After reading about all the approaches, I was able to fashion an approach that was consistent with my parenting style and worked well with my daugher's personality.

5 out of 5 stars Keep an open mind when you read this book.......2005-04-01

I had to make a comment about those reviewers that gave this book a low rating. Dr. Sonna's approach on potty training may seem different to many, but it is very, very effective. Her so called "bias" is to train kids in a different way than what we are accustomed here in the USA. If you are buying this book it's because you are needing help in this area. Maybe her advice is the advice you don't want to hear, because you've been approaching potty training with no results, and feel you couldn't possibly be doing it wrong. Some of the people who negativiley criticize this book because it's teaching a different approach to toilet train probably would criticize their doctor for perscribing a pill that cures an illness that is causing pain, when all they wanted is a pain killer. If you ever travel abroad you quickly learn that here in the US our kids are toilet trained much later than anywhere else in the world. Her pointers, suggestions, and even, thank God, her humor really help you deal with what is really not a fun and messy issue in child rearing. Throw out your (mis)-conceptions on potty training, open your mind to a different approach, buy this book, and follow the advice. The bottom line is: IT WORKS! And isn't the whole point in buying this book to find a method the works?

2 out of 5 stars not the well rounded book you would expect from the title.......2004-11-19

This book is part of the "Everything" series of books, so you would expect it to have a little bit of "everything" about potty training in it. Unfortunately, I had to read the entire book to find out that the author's clear bias towards infant potty training continues into the sections on toddler training. I was hoping for a less opinionated book, one with more general information.

Book Description

The story of Cassie Bernall, who died when she told a gunman, "Yes, I believe" in the Columbine High School shooting, has inspired young Christians around the world. This Is Your Time is an inspirational call to young people and is the title song from Michael W. Smith's new CD. This book includes the story of how Michael came to write the song and of his relationship with others who have stood for Christ in the face of death. From memories of Keith Green and Rich Mullins to stories of people who have mentored Michael and made a difference with their lives, this beautiful book will challenge young men and women to live every day to its fullest.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2004-05-11

This book is basically about Michael W. Smith's song, This is Your Time, and what it means. The song was written for Cassie Bernall, the Columbine High School student who was supposedly asked if she believed in God, and answered yes, before she died. The book is really good, I recommend it. the only thing, it gets a bit preachy at times, which I hate (and yes, before anyone asks, I am a Christian), but it's a really good book. it'll help you find insight. read it. you wont regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Challenge to today's youth!.......2001-08-09

Even if you haven't heard Michael W. Smith's album of the same name, you should read this book! I highly recommend this book for everyone, but especially for teens who face the difficult task of trying to grow up in today's mixed-up world.

The title of the book, "This is Your Time", is also the title of a song he wrote after the Columbine tragedy. Michael tells about his experience singing at the memorial service and talking to Cassie Bernall's parents (check out my review of Misty Bernall's book "She Said Yes"). But this book isn't just about Columbine. Michael talks about the death of Rich Mullins (which deeply affected me as well) and Rich's impact on people. Michael also was a good friend of the late Bob Briner (author of Roaring Lambs) and he encourages Christians to get out there and make a difference.

He quotes Hebrews 12:1...

"Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us."

Amen!

(You might want to check out my other reviews of Christian books and music)

5 out of 5 stars This Is Diffenitly YOUR Time! Make it Count!.......2001-01-16

This was a great book. At some points, very moving. My mom was reading the begining to me and had to stop because she was crying. The main idea of this book is: How Michael W. Smith came up for the idea of the song, THIS IS YOUR TIME. He got it from Rachel Scott after the Columbine shootings. This book also tells of some of MWS's own struggles and triumphs. It is a great book. A somber one at times, but true to the core. Please read this book and pass on its message: THIS IS YOUR TIME! MAKE IT COUNT!

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2000-05-13

What a great book to read! This is really a good time to evaulate our lives in a modern world with a message to all that the test is yet to come.

May it be the next munute, hour , day or month we should try to do our best work. Smitty does gives some personal highlights of what he is doing to make his moment count, as we should make our time count.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and kept reading until I finished the book (it was a good time reading and getting to know him).

5 out of 5 stars This Is Your Time: Make Every Moment Count.......2000-05-02

If you don't know Michael W. Smith, musically or as an author, this book is a great introduction to his spirit. His telling story of the Columbine tragedies affect on himself and what we all can learn from it is time well spent. Read the book, listen to the song, reflect on the meaning. Works like these in words and music bring some strange value to a tragedy at a time when we increasingly are asking "why"?

    Book Description

These are all things that we have to deal with when going through a career change. What is most difficult is deciding to make the change, especially when you are good at what you do, and wonder whether you should just stick it out in an unhappy-albeit well-paid-environment instead of taking a risk and starting over doing something you love. In This Time I Dance!, Tama Kieves shares the inspiring wisdom that led her from being a successful Harvard lawyer to an even more successful writer and life coach. The best part? She's happy with her career!

We all look for what will make us happy in life, but we don't always make the choices that we should when it comes to sustaining that happiness. Tama Kieves shows how to do just that: how to stay happy and employed doing something you love, and what it takes to stop being a stressed-out worker and make peace with your career-and, most important, with yourself. Filled with solutions to the anxieties and roadblocks you may confront on your path, This Time I Dance! is for all those who are unfulfilled at work and uncertain of the practical steps that they should follow to achieve their dreams.

5 out of 5 stars When her ship didn't come in, she swam out to it!.......2007-09-24

Tama Kieves was a successful Harvard grad/lawyer who walked away from her office with a view and high paying job to do what she most wanted to do. When she made her choice to jump in with both feet, she lowered her expenses and took a waitress job to sustain herself while she followed her dream.

She believes that people can and should be able to make a living doing whatever they are naturally gifted at and love to do. She wrote this book and when it didn't get picked up by a publisher, she self published it and then a major company approached her and bought it.

I have read a lot of self help and "Do what you love.." type books and I have to say that this one is awesome. I couldn't put it down. There is so much good advice on just about every page, and the thing is, it's all stuff she knows because she's experienced it.

I wish I had known that the secret to life is doing what you love to do when I first started working. But then, how would we know what we love if we didn't do all those things that we didn't/don't love in the first place?

This is a great book that I highly recommend and would give as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars As Poetic As It Is Practical.......2007-05-31

Tama J. Kieves is more than an author. At heart, she is a poet. And it really shows in "This Time I Dance!" This book is not only informative, but it is also a pure pleasure to read. From start to finish, it is packed with lush descriptions and magical metaphors that elevate this work of non-fiction to a work of art. "This Time I Dance" will not only inspire you to discover your passion in life and give you some practical suggestions for living your dream, but the pure artistry of its words will start your heart dancing before you even put the book down! This is a book you are going to treasure!

    5 out of 5 stars Very inspirational.......2007-03-31

I loved this book! I finished it feeling inspired to pursue my own dreams of creating a life that my heart is telling me I want to pursue. If you are trying to take a leap of faith into a career or path that scares you and excites you, and if you are tired of trying to figure it out with resources that ask you to endlessly list your interests, talents and abilities to no avail, I'd say buy this book! I'd also recommend Your Heart's Desire by Sonia Choquette if you are having trouble figuring out what it is exactly that you want.

5 out of 5 stars Go For It.......2006-11-15

Being a lot older than Ms. Kieves I look back on the way I lived mine. On the whole I did it her way. I also graduated from college looking forward to a life of working (in physics rather than law but close enough) in a lab or corporation. I found that I hated working for a large organization, especially my time spent in the Army. I also found that I didn't do well there. I tended to speak what I believed rather than what the boss wanted to hear. So I got fired a few times.

It took me a while to find what I wanted to do, run a small company with only me as an employee - along with a few computers. I don't make nearly as much money, but enough. And in 2006 I took off four months to travel. I also started a comunity theater, am active in civic organizations and enjoy life a whole lot more.

Remember the Frank Sinatra song 'My Way?' It's not a bad theme song:

I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill, my share of losing
And now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way,
'Oh, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way'

    5 out of 5 stars Real Inspiration!!.......2006-10-29

I read an earlier edition of This Time I Dance! two years ago while going back and forth with a major career decision. This book, in particular the author's practical(she writes from personal experience)but inspirational writing style, helped me to make the leap I needed to make.
