Book Description
Ways with Words is a classic study of children learning to use language at home and at school in two communities only a few miles apart in the south-eastern United States. ‘Roadville’ is a white working-class community of families steeped for generations in the life of textile mills; ‘Trackton’ is a black working-class community whose older generations grew up farming the land but whose current members work in the mills. In tracing the children’s language development the author shows the deep cultural differences between the two communities, whose ways with words differ as strikingly from each other as either does from the pattern of the townspeople, the ‘mainstream’ blacks and whites who hold power in the schools and workplaces of the region. Employing the combined skills of ethnographer, social historian, and teacher, the author raises fundamental questions about the nature of language development, the effects of literacy on oral language habits, and the sources of communication problems in schools and workplaces.

important piece of work.......2007-05-04
As a graduate student in English, I am not one who wanted to take any courses on rhetoric and composition. I signed up for one class this semester that focused on literacy and race. This book was a required reading. I was actually one of the only students who liked this book. Heath immerses herself in the communities of Trackton and Roadville. As an instructor of some of the local teachers, she decided to look into the literacy learning of these two communities. Trackton, an all black community, consists of people reading to learn. In Roadville, the all-white community is struggling with desegregation and parents wanting their children to learn the "right" things. The study of the Piedmont Carolinas--the area where the two communities are located--is important because it specifies that culture has everything to do with the way language and literacy is learned. I give it four stars because in the course of a ten year study, it did not seem as if she gathered a lot of research. She seemed to focus only on their lifestyles.
Shirley Brice Heath Has a "Way With Words".......2000-08-23
Language is power. Heath, a reflective practitioner of both human nature and schooling, provides an in-depth view of communities which epitomize the struggle for such power. In her ethnographic study of Trackton and Roadville, Heath lays bare the socializing process of children through words. The discontinuity between home and school is disturbing; a realization that students who do not fit the traditional way of schooling are left behind. Clearly illustrated is the need for teachers and students to bridge the gap which exists in relation to both language and culture, for without this effort some students will never acquire the power needed to take control of their education or pursue opportunities from which they have previously been excluded. This is must reading for student ethnographers, doctoral students, and those dedicated to school reform, particularly those in the areas of diversity in public schools, and language. This extraordinary book compares favorably to "Growing Up Literate: Learning From Inner-City Families" by Denny Taylor & Catherine Dorsey-Gaines.
A Teacher's View.......2000-04-03
Teaching in a high school with a large number of minority children can be challenging. After reading this book, recommended by the debate teacher, I feel that I am better prepared. This book is an excellent resource for those wanting to understand the student from a background different form their own. If you plan to work in public school, this book is a must-read. I borrowed a friend's book, and then decided I had to have a copy of my own.

Porn you can share with the book store clerk.......2007-10-04
The concept of this book I found very funny. However, since you can read the whole thing at the book store AND have a good laugh with the clerk at same time, it's a bit of waste of trees at the price.
Great Gag Gift for Women.......2007-09-29
After seeing this book and being amused page after page by the simple, hilarious photos of men saying all the right things, I bought four of these to give as Christmas gifts to my female friends. The writing is funny, the photos are terrific... I wish the guys had been a bit more attractive-- they're nice looking but nothing to fawn over. My guess is that any woman age 30-60 who's ever been in a relationship will laugh.
Ohhhhhhhh!! My hands are trembling as I type this!.......2007-09-19
Ladies, this is really HOT! No, I mean really, really HOT!
This is a book of men as you've always dreamed you'd see them: vacuuming, doing dishes (WITHOUT being asked) and pumping some real iron, by getting your outfit ready before he takes you out in it!
This book would make an awesome gift for a bridal shower or for any woman you know who just needs a GOOD LAUGH!
this is not a fake review.......2007-09-13
After ordering this book based on the positive reviews it's obvious to me that the reviews are fake. I found the book to be unreadable, devoid of humor, logic and a point of view, sad and pathetic. Oh, and please note the defensive, hostile comments to any negative review for the book. What does that tell you about who is writing these comments? Casual bystanders? I think not. It's pretty obvious there's an abundance of fake reviews for this insipid piece of unfunny garbage.
Really, Too Cute and Not What You Think!.......2007-09-09
I had heard about this little book from friends and it lives up to expectation! This is not your average porn..these guys are hot. Especially if you like a man that cleans the toilet for you, skips the playoffs to go to a craft show, puts the seat down, thinks you are too thin and other risque actions! The men are hunks and the concept is super. Men are really sexy when they do nice and thoughtful things for us!

Great Prayers For Ecumenical Services.......2007-06-02
I have found this book to be of great value in my Ecumenical relations with other faiths.
I have also found for myself a deep spiritual renewal in reading this book.
I recommend this Book of Common Prayer to all that value the wisdom within other faiths.
Very Good!.......2007-05-14
Well, I can't rate the BCP anything but positive. My only concern was I failed to read the size of the book and it was smaller then I would have liked, the pages are thin, but at the same time feel very "strong." It has the Daily Office and the complete Psalter. If only I had read the dimensions, I am sure I would have opted for a larger addition. If you don't have problems with smaller print, then by all means purchase this copy, you can't be the price. Also the binding it very good, the book while small, lays flat, whch is a really nice in a hardcover book of this size.
Review of BCP.......2007-03-25
I was pleased with this book, as well as for the speed of delivery. Thanks.

This book was so good, I used it in my wedding!
Book of Uncommon prayer.......2007-03-23
A wonderful size to tuck in a backpack or purse, I love the language of the liturgy and the realm of spiritual union they create between the reader and God. Nicely bound, delicate paper.

Book Description
The first volume of The New Cambridge Medieval History covers the transitional period between the later Roman world and the early middle ages, c. 500 to c. 700. This was an era of developing consciousness and profound change in Europe, Byzantium and the Arab world, an era in which the foundations of medieval society were laid and to which many of our modern myths of national and religious identity can be traced. This book offers a comprehensive regional survey of the sixth and seventh centuries, from Ireland in the west to the rise of Islam in the Middle East, and from Scandinavia in the north to the Mediterranean south. It explores the key themes pinning together the history of this period, from kingship, trade and the church, to art, architecture and education. It represents both an invaluable conspectus of current scholarship and an expert introduction to the period.

I cannot recommend all of staffs........2007-01-20
It is well-organized.
Beginning practice is excessively useful. Also, Listening, Speaking, and Writing practice are helpful.(If you wanna practice Listening, you have to buy extra audio CDs... but it surely is helpful. It contains different types of accent such as British, Australian.)
However, as for reading practice, I cannot recommend this 'cause it's totally different from real the iBT TOEFL test. I cannot accept this book's practice style.
In conclusion, people who want to improve;
1) Listening
2) Speaking
3) Writing(including Grammer practice)
this book helps you.
the perfect READING and LISTENING prep.......2006-11-26
This book really helps you develop skills and specific ways
of studying and expressing yourself literally. It even helps in expanding your awareness. Really helpful, really nice.Really tidy step-by-step guide,
makes me feel secure I got the tools for success.Just one other thing--
the CD is good, listening practices are perfect and everything, but I got a virus from it,from the .exe file on my PC so I decided not to use the send-your-response-to-a-teacher feature .And there is no other way you can measure your speaking and writing skills before you go to TOEFL.
listening practices.......2005-06-29
This is a pretty good book, I would say (although, I can't compare it with other ones). The book has 4 sections for each of the testsections. Each section has tiny steps and explains everything. After each step you take a small test to see if you understood everything. I got bored with all the explanations and examples, so I only did the tests and reviewed the sections, where I had problems.
It comes with a CD-Rom, which is very good, because you can practice either the computer test or the written Test. The only problem is the listening section is not on the CD-Rom. You have to buy it extra on CDs (which I couldn't find and actually don't want to spend extra money for). So if you have big troubles understanding spoken English, you'll have to get an extra training book. That is the big minus when buying this product. Everything else is great.
quite good BUT.......2004-09-07
Listening section does not contain Audio CD, why are not these excersises on the CDROM?! The attached CDROM has less than 300MB and typical cdrom can contain more than 600MB!!!
The Structure section does not contain enough exercises. Some parts are easy for me and I need just 4-5 sentences to see if I understand the problem. Others are more tricky and they contain only 8 examples?! I am taking the test in four weeks, so I will see how much helpful the book was.
It definately help!!.......2003-12-19
I've went through this book and worked on all the practice test on the disk, it really helped me to understand the test format in real test condition and provided concentrated review material in different sections. The only drawback will be the tapes included are too clear, which is really different from the real test (it's a bit muffle in the real test) lucky I went through the free toefl practice test material available on the toefl website on the day I took the test and realise that. Anyway, I got 280 points with the help of the book..really satisfy with the result! It's worth to try.

nothing new .......2007-01-13
I was very disappointed in this book. Like many of the books in the Cambridge series, it seemed a little dated. For anyone who lives in the US I think the cooperate learning series by Kagan is far superior and is easily adapted for ESL.
Great for beginners.......2007-01-04
So there I was at my first TESOL convention having almost completed my MA TESL/TEFL. I was literally salivating at the Cambridge book stall. Everything looked so great, but as a student you have limited funds. Suddenly an older woman walked up to me, recognized my bibliophile stupor and asked if I was a new teacher. I answered yes and she grabbed this title and "Discussions That Work" by Penny Ur. These two books have been invaluable in my teaching for the past five years. The activities are well organized and the explanations help as a springboard for my own ideas. As with all Cambridge series, the preference is British English, so if you are a purist, some activities are not readily available for American. I have found that my students don't usually notice the difference. All in all, this is the one book in my ESL library that I look in first when I am at a complete loss for what to do.
I bought it twice........2006-12-02
I bought this book as a requirement for one of my college classes. As a foreign language and second language teacher, I referred to it often for ideas. I loaned it to another teacher who left the country without returning the book. I loved the book so much I bought it a second time. Now, I never loan this book to anyone.
Pretty good.......2003-12-09
This book is pretty good. It has photocopiable games at the back that I use fairly often. My only complaint about this book is that it isn't organized in a way that lets me find specific activities for practicing specific grammar points. It's organized by type of game (i.e. picture games, word games, acting, etc.) But all in all, it's pretty good
fun and fluency building for the language learner.......2000-08-15
"Keep Talking" contains over one hundred different fluency-building activities for the language teacher to use either directly, or with modification, in her language classroom. Each activity has a well defined purpose, whether it be functional or structural, and is categorized according to language level, skill and student arrangement, stating clearly whether or not preparation is necessary, and how long the tasks typically take. The procedural instructions are lucid and relatively easy to convey to most groups of language learners, and there is also scope for variation for many of these language games, along with helpful comments on how make such activities fun and achievable. If one also includes the importance of making notes, and obtaining feedback, which Kippel suggests in the introduction, then it is clear just how useful this book is. Although I was at first confused as to why the author grouped his language learning activities under themes such as jigsaw task, interview, or story telling, rather than according to function or structure, I think his point is to focus on fluency and engendering a communicative atmosphere, rather than to actually teach anything or practice something too specific. The teacher's role, therefore, appears to be as a facilitator or classroom manager. In any case, the indexes include language structure (but not function) and level, making navigating relatively straight-forward. "Keep Talking" also contains about sixty worksheets which can be copied for use in class. Although I no longer use them in my teaching situation, I borrow ideas from them all the time. This book is not suitable for formal institutions, but otherwise, whether you are new to language teaching, or a seasoned pro, I feel fairly confident that there is something in this book for you.

Over thirty essays provide a comprehensive overview of the essential events, persons, places and issues involved in the emergence of the Christian religion in the Mediterranean world over the first three centuries. The collection traces the dynamic history from the time of Jesus through to the rise of Imperial Christianity in the fourth century. Join the revolution ignited by the ground-breaking R system! Starting with an introduction to R, covering standard regression methods, then presenting more advanced topics, this book guides users through the practical and powerful tools that the R system provides. The emphasis is on hands-on analysis, graphical display and interpretation of data. The many worked examples, taken from real-world research, are accompanied by commentary on what is done and why. A website provides computer code and data sets, allowing readers to reproduce all analyses. Updates and solutions to selected exercises are also available. Assuming only basic statistical knowledge, the book is ideal for research scientists, final-year undergraduate or graduate level students of applied statistics, and practising statisticians. It is both for learning and for reference. This revised edition reflects changes in R since 2003 and has new material on survival analysis, random coefficient models, and the handling of high-dimensional data.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-08-04
Very good book for beginners and experienced users. Good presentation, hard cover, wide content...an outstanding book.
Comprehensive and Comprehensible.......2007-03-14
I am using this book as my main resource to learn R from scratch. I had no prior experience with the program. The text is easy to read, and gives you just enough statistical theory to understand the operations without weighing you down with overly-difficult concepts. Many useful 'references for further reading' are scattered throughout if you want to know more about any particular method or operation. The book has an accompanying website with examples of code used for all the figures in the book, solutions to selected exercises, and other helpful things. Advanced topics/sections are marked with an asterisk, indicating that a first-time reader may skip over them until a later date. Overall, the book is very explicit about the code used for all the examples, allowing for easy adaptation to the users' purposes. The exercises at the end of every chapter can be quite challenging, as they often build on concepts presented in the chapter rather than simply reviewing the material. The index is very good (there is one for terms and one for R symbols and functions). Overall, the book is pretty user-friendly for a novice like me, and it covers a broad range of methods of data analysis.
tailored for a select field of individuals.......2007-01-20
The title gives a comprehensive concept of the book content. Data Analysis and Graphics Using R (emphasize 'R' !!!). Nothing less and really nothing more, although I would add "Introduction to" at the beginning of the title. This book is intended for someone with little/no background in data analysis or R. This book is meant to fill the gap of researchers who do not know statistics terribly well, but want to do some of their own statistics and only do those stats in R. Others wanting an survey of data analysis topics may also benefit to some degree from this book.
Book Features (may be a pro/con, depending on your perspective):
-starts with a very basic intro to R; absolutely no knowledge is assumed
-basic (not as thorough as I would have liked) intro to data analysis
-basic intro to data analysis (focuses more on implementation in R than theory)
-minimal stats background required (1-2 courses in stats)
Pros:
-good/solid introduction to R linear models and R graphics; if you want to learn about R graphics and also dabble in basic data analysis, this book will likely fit your need
Cons:
-VERY wordy
-takes awhile to get to the point (sometimes starts with a long example -- just say what the model is and then give the example, not vice versa which makes it hard to find substance)
-does not typically go into great depth of methods (slightly more than a survey of topics)
-instead of addressing topics in a single location, things seem to be more scattered in the book
-may create an R user who cannot use R's help adequately; a lot of this book is spoon-feeding commands and focuses less on making the reader figure out how to use R in new realms or really understanding concepts
As mentioned above, this book is VERY wordy. I generally expect books to explain things clearly and concisely. There is nothing concise about this book. Where 1-2 lines are needed, there are 4-5. Also, this book is more breadth than depth. IMO, this book needs a good editor or someone to rewrite things in a concise format, which would allow for a little more complexity as well.
limited review..........2006-04-05
I found this book to be quite useful for learning R, and for pointing out the pitfalls for new users. It's especially good to know that there is a website associated with the book that will allow you to download the code used in the book.
There are several good free R resources out there, but in the end I think you get what you pay for. In this case it was nice to have a hard-bound reference with an index and appendix that I could highlight and dog-ear.
I mostly used it as a book for learning R, and not as a stats book. I did notice that there were many good examples of common statistical applications, such as t-stat tests, residual plotting, and the like. In other words, I feel like I got my money's worth by just using a few chapters and the appendix.
Good both for reference and for learning R.......2006-03-29
This is a great book for people under pressure (I'm a first-year biostat grad student, so I know whereof I speak) who want to get into doing serious data analysis quickly using R. It's also a good reference once you know the language better. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that the organization is a little confusing, particularly when you're trying to find sample code to produce a particular figure or analysis -- overall, though, I think it's the best R-specific book out there for the general user.
Book Description
A major event: a new novel by the Whitbread winner, her first novel since
Emotionally Weird, and probably her most commercial book yet.
The scene is set in Cambridge, with three case histories from the past: A young child who mysteriously disappeared from a tent in her back garden; An unidentified man in a yellow jumper who marched into an office and slashed a young girl through the throat; and a young woman found by the police sitting in her kitchen next to the body of her husband, an axe buried in his head.
Jackson Brodie, a private investigator and former police detective, is quietly contemplating life as a divorced father when he is flung into the midst of these resurrected old crimes. Julia and Amelia Land enlist Jackson’s help to find out the truth about their younger sister. They embroil him in the complexities of their own jealousies, obsessions and lust.
Another woman named Shirley needs Jackson to help find her lost niece. Jackson meets solicitor Theo Wyre whose daughter, Laura, was murdered in his office and is desperate for Jackson to help him lay Laura's ghost to rest.
As he starts his investigations Jackson has the sinister feeling that someone is following him. In digging into the past Jackson seems to have unwittingly threatened his own future. This wonderfully crafted, intricately plotted novel is heartbreaking, uplifting, full of suspense and often very funny.

I'm being generous........2007-10-08
How this book is getting five stars is beyond me. I mean, it's not an AWFUL book as it does have some redeeming language and a somewhat coherent plotline, but it so just so boring. Getting into this book took forever, and once I did become even remotely interested, the focus would switch and I would forget what I had already read. The characters are uninteresting and there are far too many names to keep track of. I just simply didn't care about them. I'm not sure that enough time was given to each "case", and that resulted in the lack of depth of the characters. I don't know, I just wasn't convinced... they didn't seem real to me. This book could have been an interesting read, but it was just too sloppy and underdeveloped.
Though I wouldn't give this one star, three might be pushing it. Like I said, some of the language used in this book was very beautiful and I'm a sucker for a good quote, but more often than not the dialogue (both internal and external) was just bland. Not to mention Atkinson's ridiculously excessive sexual language. I didn't notice it so much at first, but by the second half of the book EVERYTHING centered around sex. Everything. Maybe that was intentional, maybe a major theme was sexual depravity and the pains brought by it, but to me it was just unnecessary. It's not the sexual language itself that bothered me; if it had fit or enhanced the writing in any way I would support it. But alas, Atkinson failed to deliver on that one. She could have developed some really great characters by giving them ANY other redeemable quality, but she didn't, and thus they fall flat.
My last great qualm that I have to voice, and forgive me for being nit-picky, is the author's excessive use of parenthesis. I found them extremely distracting. If you have to voice a character's "true thoughts" in parenthesis, then you haven't developed him well enough! I should be able to KNOW what Jackson is thinking without having the simple things spelled out for me. Come on, give your readers some credit.
Not the worst book you could read, but far from the top of my list.
Good beginnings, but then...........2007-10-07
The story begins at once, and it is exciting. The reader is presented with three different case-files of un-solved mysteries: the case of the little girl Olivia, the case about Michelle and her daughter Tanya and the case about Laura. All cases are years old, and after the presentation, we move forward to the present day, where the ex-cop and ex-soldier Jackson Brodie enters the stage as some kind of a private eye, hired to solve the three old cases. Jackson is a philosofical dreamer, and he is chronically worrited about his 8 year old daughter. In his quest of finding answers, not just to the old cases but to life in general, he manages to crack open the three old cases again and get small glimpses of what happened back then.
Unfortunately, what promises to be a great story, a great mystery, fade out pretty fast. Jackson seems too philosofical and yet cynic, the disappeared Olivia's three, now grown, sisters seem too cartoon-ish and it is hard to find the rhythm in the story. We also find out the Jackson's cynisims has grounds in his own childhood and upbringing and recent divorce, and it makes the story all the more annoying in this reader's opinion.
The story is set in Cambridge in England, and I would have liked a little more atmosphere of the town. The story is not very tight, and what could have been a great book and a great mystery seems lost. All in all, this was a 2* plus book, and I ahve decided to give it 3* here.
so overrated.......2007-10-01
Please do not believe the hype with this book. (I should preface this by saying that I finished reading a Cormac McCarthy novel last week, so perhaps my palette is scarred.) The characters wallow about with too much lame dialogue and expected idiosyncrasies. The plot starts out at 80 mph, only to sputter to a geriatric standstill by the 5th chapter. I kept turning pages hoping it would get better, be written better, and seem like less of a Lifetime channel movie you watch on sick days. Sadly, dear potential reader, it never did. When I finished the last page I immediately walked outside and left it on the curb, saddened that it ever occupied a place on my bookshelf. If you want to read it, you can find it outside on the sidewalk and save yourself the shipping charges.
modest mystery and plot, interesting threads.......2007-09-28
The resolution of the murder mysteries takes a distant back seat to the odd collection of characters, some interesting and some not so much. There's hardly a normal person to be seen, with perhaps the most normal person the detective who integrates the threads, or maybe the victims. Ms. Atkinson has delivered an entertaining story somewhat light on action, when compared to the detective novel genre, but it's clear she was aiming for something else. The characters are the real focus, and she tells about them in a casual, conversational style that goes down easily.
Alright?.......2007-09-09
I enjoyed this intricate, character-centered narrative (although the deus-ex-machina fantasy endings mar it, unless their very unreality is the point. And why, in so many current novels, are the characters with same-sex desires also often the most unappealing?)
But my main comment is a nit-picky pedantic one. When did it become all right to spell "all right" as "alright"? I hate this trend. I can adapt to inevitable linguistic change (hey, I no longer rant about "impact" as a verb [I even see now that it makes logical sense], and half the time, I can even hear "proactive" without shuddering), but "alright" seems sloppy and unnecessarily imprecise. And while I'm at it, I'll point out another problem: a character is said "not to waiver" after making a decision. What, to change your mind nowadays, you have to submit a waiver? (joke -- that's a joke.) Get better editors. All right?
