Recognizing each child's intellectual, emotional, and physical strengths--and teaching directly to these strengths--is key to sculpting "a mind at a time," according to Dr. Mel Levine. While this flashing yellow light will not surprise many skilled educators, limited resources often prevent them from shifting their instructional gears. But to teachers and parents whose children face daily humiliation at school, the author bellows, "Try harder!" A professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Medical School, Levine eloquently substantiates his claim that developmental growth deserves the same monitoring as a child's physical growth.

Tales of creative, clumsy, impulsive, nerdy, intuitive, loud-mouthed, and painfully shy kids help Levine define eight specific mind systems (attention, memory, language, spatial ordering, sequential ordering, motor, higher thinking, and social thinking). Levine also incorporates scientific research to show readers how the eight neurodevelopmental systems evolve, interact, and contribute to a child's success in school. Detailed steps describe how mental processes (like problem solving) work for capable kids, and how they can be finessed to serve those who struggle. Clear, practical suggestions for fostering self-monitoring skills and building self-esteem add the most important elements to this essential--yet challenging--program for "raisin' brain." --Liane Thomas

Book Description

"Different minds learn differently," writes Dr. Mel Levine, one of the best-known learning experts and pediatricians in America today. Some students are strong in certain areas and some are strong in others, but no one is equally capable in all. Yet most schools still cling to a one-size-fits-all education philosophy. As a result, many children struggle because their learning patterns don't fit the way they are being taught.

In his #1 New York Times bestseller A Mind at a Time, Dr. Levine shows parents and those who care for children how to identify these individual learning patterns, explaining how they can strengthen a child's abilities and either bypass or help overcome the child's weaknesses, producing positive results instead of repeated frustration and failure.

Consistent progress can result when we understand that not every child can do equally well in every type of learning and begin to pay more attention to individual learning patterns -- and individual minds -- so that we can maximize children's success and gratification in life. In A Mind at a Time Dr. Levine shows us how.

And that's a problem for many children, because most schools still cling to a one-size-fits-all education philosophy. In A Mind at a Time, Dr. Levine shows parents and others who care for children how to identify these individual learning patterns.

5 out of 5 stars Instruction manual.......2007-09-16

Thank you Dr. Levine for this instruction manual about the mind!!! I have read this book several times already and learn something new each time I read it. I continue to use it as a reference for when I am stumped about either my own behavior or a child's behavior.

5 out of 5 stars Informative - should be read by all parents and teachers!.......2007-03-28

This book clearly defines how different minds learn and process the vast amounts of information encountered on a daily basis in school and in everyday life. The author is clearly at the top of his field and can very easily communicate his findings in a way that is easy to comprehend, extremely informative and interesting to read.

5 out of 5 stars A Mind at a Time.......2006-11-05

This book provides an excellent explanation of the frustrations that some kids face on a day to day basis. This book should be required reading for all teachers, parents, and any other profession which works with children.

4 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Levine.......2006-08-31

I loved this book because I believe that every child is unique and I appreciate being reminded about the complexity of the brain and why it should be expected that we all have little quirks. Educators can sadly have blinders to differences in learning style. Mel Levine's work reminds me of Howard Gardner's in many ways. I sense that he truly cares about kids and I like that he supports what is best practice in education. Levine says he can learn more about a child by getting to know that child than by reading a list of test scores........let's hear it for that! Levine says, "sometimes you fix a weakness by pursuing strengths." I support that positive approach. To enhance my teaching I found many great quotes perfect for Back to School night and parents who have borrowed his book have enjoyed it immensely.

5 out of 5 stars An eye-opener and food for thought.......2006-05-03

I first picked up this book because I believe that every child is an individual and has individual needs. When I started reading the book I finally found someone else who believes that too. Levine carefully looks at each "learning disability" and breaks it down into various components. Upon reading, I began to see many of my own RSP students more clearly. Susie doesn't just have ADD,she has problems with auditory distrators. For those naysayers, perhaps Levine is ahead of his time, perhaps he has seen somethings others haven't yet (remember, there was a time when folks that blood-letting was appropriate). For me and several of my professional friends, this book is an inspiration to look more deeply at each student and it gives us the tools to do so. It is heavy reading, I will admit. I actually took the content and created a graphic reading guide to go with it for my staff because you can get lost in it if you are not a careful reader. This is not casual bedtime reading.

Brenda Zofrea has found a unique way to "gently" introduce the threat of sexual abuse to children; yet at the same time the book delivers a powerful message.
My kids fell in-love with "Bumblebee", a colorful character that leads them through this delightful--but informative, childrens book.
I would recommend "LETS B SAFE" to parents (and grandparents!) everywhere, and also to any child-care facility. Makes a great gift!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-09-28

I love this book! It is filled with great ideas, and organized by age range. The pictures are large and very helpful along with the descriptions of the activities. Even if you think you may have thought of some of these ideas on your own, it's hard to know when to introduce each activity and what specific skills it is building. This book is a great resource.

2 out of 5 stars if you have any parental intuition, you're doing fine and don't need this book........2007-09-18

i found the activities in this book uninspiring. i was already implementing 99% of them just in my everyday interactions with my infant. i was hoping for something that would further enhance the development of my child, but it turns out the things that naturally occur to a parent are just fine. my baby is only 3 months, so perhaps the activites for older babies will be more interesting. the play for newborns was a disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars NO New ideas in this book-only buy if u have not bought ANY baby items........2007-08-13

This book is very good and give you a lot of ways to interact with your infant and to help his development. However, a lot of the things are things child development books tell you to do and include things that are products on the market.
For example, the book has how to make tummy rolls from towels but, i had already purchased the boppy tummy time mat for this. If i had known or even thought about this towel method before I bought and opened the package then I would not have purchased the boppy.
A couple other examples are the play mat and mobile. This book tell you how to make them with things you already have in the home. Not much use if you have already assembled the baby's room and used the play mat. This is pretty much how things in the book are. There are no NEW ideas in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Contains the activies I'd thought of, and more.......2007-07-23

Thanks to other reviewers, I found this book to be exactly what I wanted!

I use this book to vary the activities I do with my daughter and ensure I am working on varied developmental milestones. I particularly love the airplane exercise that has enabled me to work with my daughter on neck and abdomen physical development despite her reflux problem.

Pros
Broken down by age
Explains what's being developed in your child by the activity
Great for a first time parent

Cons
A couple of the activities seemed dangerous to me, so I skipped them
If you have a strong imagination, then maybe you don't need the book

5 out of 5 stars Baby play book.......2007-07-13

A well done book. First time parent, If you are second time parent skip it. Also if your are active with baby playing games etc you probably are doing every thing in the book.

1 out of 5 stars Who are they kidding?.......2007-06-01

This book is completely full of 'case studies', yet the biggest flaw is that they wrote it with such political correctness as to alienate the very person who is buying the book, mainly, the women! Almost every story is about some woman being the 'jerk' and some poor helpless guy getting taken advantage of! Give me a brake!

2 out of 5 stars mixed bag.......2007-03-09

Most of the comments made are based on large assumptions about the dynamics of the relationships. I don't think it takes into account when you have an ex who isn't willing to work anything out. For such a circumstance I don't think this book really helps at all except understand your own feelings. I think I have a pretty good handle on my feelings and don't need any book to tell me how I feel or to help analyze myself for that matter. This book might help in trying to figure the ex out but in my opinion I think those are assumptions and opions as well and not neccessarily fact. If the author put in advice about legal options it might prove to be more useful.

5 out of 5 stars A divorce recovery must have!.......2007-01-09

This book really helped to comfort me and to put things into perspective. I could hardly put this book down.I highly recommend it if you are in any stage of divorce. I wish I would have read it before my attorneys used my emotionally difficult divorce to suck thousands of wasted dollars out of me.

1 out of 5 stars How To Inflame The Situation. Should be the title of this book........2006-09-07

One parenting acting like a jerk is bad enough. Advising the other parent to act like a jerk is not going to help the children.
Be as kind to yourself, your children and your X as you can. Don't behave like a jerk or make things harder for any reason.
Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book........2006-08-30

I personally think everyone regardless of their status should read this book. It's a great communication tool. Very quick read; simple; easy to read and understand. Personally I've found it to be a great help in dealing with many different situations, especially in times of conflict, that have almost impossible or non-existant positive communication.

This book makes it simple and easy to understand just how powerful taking responsibility for ones own issues and communication can be. It gives the reader a clear and concise way to gain control over themselves and their communication and hand back to the other party that which does not belong to the reader. I've bought this book for many of my friends and they have all felt like it was a valuable read not only when dealing with an ex-spouse, but also in many other situations where one finds ones self dealing with conflict.

My one regret with this book is that the title is such a poor choice for such a wonderful tool!

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THIS BOOK'S TITLE! Many teachers will be tempted to pass on this book because of it's title. Teachers who face reading instruction for a wide range of abilities in large classrooms of 20 plus students may be discouraged by a book that, at first glance, seems to approach the teaching of reading one student at a time. Again, DO NOT BE FOOLED. Once inside, you will find that many of the reasons that students struggle to read are quite common. Therefore, much of what she teaches you can be used in group work with your students who have a common need. If you would like to read more about Pat Johnson's approach and about the teaching of reading in this book, please see the Stenhouse Publishing website where the entire book is on-line for review!

I have been a special eduation teacher, Reading Recovery teacher, and resding specialist for 30 years. This book is by far the most comprehensive and READABLE book I have seen on the subject of working with struggling readers. It is to to teachers of struggling readers what Reading Essentials (Routman) is to all teachers of reading... a must have. I particularly like the way she addresses student motivation. Very reader friendly and easy to put into practice.

Book Description

In the third installment in the Magic or Madness trilogy, the people Reason Cansino loves most are all in danger. Reason's mother, Sarafina, has disappeared from the mental hospital in Sydney with Reason's evil grandfather, Jason Blake. Jay-Tee, the closest thing Reason has to a best friend, has used all of her magic and faces death at any moment. Only Reason can find the answers within her family's magic to save everyone who matters most to her.

Magic's Child is a satisfying and thrilling conclusion to a breakout trilogy that launched to multiple starred reviews and earned spots on the 2006 BBYA final list, as well as the Locus 2005 Recommended Reading List.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Completely perfect ending!!!.......2007-08-03

This was a great way to end te series. A tantalizing taste of what magic could be like if it existed. 5 stars, and this authour is awesome. I will read anything else she comes out with.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-06-01

At the start of this wonderful conclusion to a great fantasy trilogy, Reason Cansino is a lot of things most fifteen year olds aren't. She's magic. She's pregnant. And she may or may not be entirely human.

In this continuation of Reason's story, she is falling more and more deeply into the strange, ancient, and inhuman power given to her by Raul Cansino. She is becoming more and more scarily powerful--but she's giving up her humanity (and maybe that of her unborn child) for that power. She won't die young like so many magic-wielders who use their powers unwisely, and neither will she go crazy and end up in the loony-bin with her mother.

But is giving up her humanity worth it?

MAGIC'S CHILD is strictly a continuation of an already begun story. It is not a story within itself, really, and, as such, should only be picked up by those who have read the first two parts of the trilogy (Magic or Madness (Magic or Madness Trilogy) and Magic Lessons (Magic or Madness Trilogy)). If you haven't read those, well, they're highly recommended, as well!

Justine Larbalestier's third installment in the MAGIC OR MADNESS trilogy is a good conclusion to the story, one that will have readers racing through it as fast as possible. It was a little bit open-ended for my taste, but not in a terrible cliffhanger way. It was either a less than fabulous last chapter or a fabulous way to leave the door open for another book set in this universe; who knows? Either way, the characters, dialogue, and style of MAGIC'S CHILD are all great, it's well worth reading, and I'm looking forward to reading more from Justine Larbalestier.

4 out of 5 stars A Conclusion and a Beginning.......2007-05-21

Australian author Justine Larbalestier's first novel, Magic or Madness, challenged Reason - that is, to say, a teenage girl named Reason who spent her life with her cheery mother, until her lovely mother went a little mad. Reason realized that the stories her mom told her were true. Magic exists, and it runs through the veins of all of the women in her family. Either they use it and die young or they repress it and go mad.

Her grandmother, who is depicted as a villain in all of her mother's stories, takes Reason in when she has no other place to go. Reason then meets her gran's neighbor, a boy her own age, and Jay-Tee, who lives in New York - which magically appears outside of her grandmother's door. The story continued in Magic Lessons, when the stakes were raised and the powers of the main characters tested.

Now the final chapter in the Magic or Madness trilogy is here: Magic's Child. The title itself is a huge spoiler, obviously. I recommend that you read the trilogy in the proper order for the ultimate impact.

Each character gets his or her moment in the spotlight here as the story bounces back and forth between locations and viewpoints. I enjoyed Reason's travels around the world, confirming the presence of other doors and introducing her to another generation of magic-users. (Can you say spinoff?) I found myself liking Jay-Tee more and more as the story progressed. Even Sarafina has a memorable scene in which she creates butterflies. Such a childlike innocence about her then, making her greedy demeanor and evil actions only a short while later all the more scary.

Magic's Child pushes Reason's sanity and strength to the brink. Will she go past the point of no return? Has she any reason to stick around? Find out by reading the book, then share the magic of Reason's world and Larbalestier's writing with other fantasy fans.

What terrible secret was buried in Shi Huangdi's tomb? Did nomads like lizard stew? What happened to Anansi the Spider in the Village of the Plantains? And how did a six-year-old become the last emperor of Rome?

Told in a straightforward, engaging style that has become Susan Wise Bauer's trademark, The Story of the World covers the sweep of human history from ancient times until the present. Africa, China, Europe, the Americas- find out what happened all around the world in long-ago times. This first volume begins with the earliest nomads and ends with the last Roman emperor.

This read-aloud series is designed for parents to share with elementary-school children. Enjoy it together and introduce your child to the marvelous story of the world's civilizations.

2 out of 5 stars Not for younger children.......2007-09-27

Now, keep in mind that I have not read the book and have no idea how good it is for older children. This is specifically for younger children. I bought this book to read aloud to my 5 year old thinking it would be a fun way to introduce her to ancient cultures in our homeschool. Boy, was I surprised when it arrived and it was just a normal sized paperback with no pictures! It is not something that any but the most cerebral 5 year old would sit through. So it will sit on my shelf collecting dust until she is ready for it. Also, considering that it is just a paperback with no pictures it is really not worth the price even for older kids. Maybe grab it from your local library, but don't buy it.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best children's narratives on the market.......2007-08-17

In my mind, S. Wise Bauer has attempted and succeeded: She has made history fun again. The children reading (or listening to) the books will not be writing a dissertation based upon what she has written-- but they will be inclined to pick up another history book, and another... Her writing will get them thinking and talking about history beyond dates.

That's why I like this series. I believe some of the negative reviewers have lost site of the purpose: To engage readers on an elementary level. If readers are following the classical model, they will see more detailed information about the events again (probably twice). This first go round just provides a point of reference for later study.

Examining historical events does not begin and end with one book or source. A true historian will pull together many resources in order to form a composite.

In defense of Bauer's writing, I think that some reviewers are expecting a grammar stage history "holy grail" of some sort. I have yet to find one. Every history book has it's pros and cons. In my mind, this one has more pros than cons.

Bauer does not claim to be the final resource or authority for grammar stage world history. As a matter of fact, she provides extensive lists of additional resources in her other books, like the Well Trained Mind and in the companion workbook. This is the main reason I give this book 4 stars. I wish I could give 4.5. Perhaps an abbreviated version of the resource lists should be included in each volume as an appendix if it is going to stand alone.

Overall, I think it's great for what it aims to do: spark discussion and develop life long learners.

2 out of 5 stars Liked the format and presentation - not the facts.......2007-06-27

I was looking for a history book as I homeschool my daughter. I was very happy with the workbook format and projects as well as history presented in chronological order. As I am not a history scholar, I was enjoying learning the history along with my daughter up until I was reading her chapter on Christianity. Being a Christian who has studied much of the bible, I am familiar with a good amount of these facts. Some of the facts she presents are so wrong that now I question many of the facts she presents from other cultures. If you are looking for an easy read and presentation of different cultures this book is good. I will continue thru the series as I do like certain things about it, however, I am now aware of its weakness and will use other books to supplement the fact presented so the information will be more accurate.

    3 out of 5 stars It's OK, but I'm wishing for more.......2007-03-22

My expectations for this book were too high, based on some reviews, although I was worried about comments about inaccuracies. I found it disappointing.

I think what I react against is that this book is just one of many which seem to say the only ancient history that's at all important is what happened in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. There is a chapter on India and a chapter on China, but they are hat-tipping kinds of chapters that don't give the awesome breadth of those amazing cultures. And I was super disappointed with the chapter on the Americas. Mexico, according to this book's geography, is part of Central America. North Americans are all termed nomads, as if they were wandering around aimlessly instead of in the amazing variety of communities that they really lived in - some villages, some awesome cities, and others who didn't settle in permanent villages still had definite territories they exploited.

There is actually more material given on characters of the Bible, which are not labelled as from the Bible but treated as actual historical characters, than there is on the ancient Americas, or ancient China for that matter.

This really doesn't seem to be the story of the world, but the story of western civilization, with a smattering of other cultures thrown in as an afterthought.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the read... For the real dad to be... (moms to be can read too...).......2007-08-27

Firstly, ignore the TWO, yes TWO, negative reviews... There is always the couple of folks who "just don't get it." I picked this up a Baby's r US and thumbed through it while waiting to go on the "baby shower registration" escapade... I enjoyed the book so much, I bought it from Amazon.com. (only one copy at the store and it was beat up.)
The author talks writes in lingo that is not meant for the "wimpy" guy or the guy is so full of himself that he honestly believes that his stuff don't stink. This is written for the Football/Hockey watchin', beer drinkin', pool playin', laugh out loud kind of guy. The survival tips listed, both before and after the birth, were actually covered in our hospital's childbirth class... Reinforced actually, as I had already read them all here... This isn't an owners manual for your NFU (new family unit), but will show you some great (and some not so) things about to come your way.

5 out of 5 stars Girls like it too........2007-06-25

    Guys aren't the only ones that like potty humor. I got this at my baby shower and read it out loud. We all laughed like hell, and there wasn't a drop of wine in the house! DH liked it too, BTW. ;-}

5 out of 5 stars Perfect For Dads to Be.......2007-03-19

I bought this for my husband. It is the first baby related material that I have seen him read willingly. He chuckles out loud and actually starts conversations with me about the material. Good info, put into words that a guy can relate too. The humor takes away some of that aprehension that a lot of new dads face.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC HELPER FOR DADS.......2007-02-20

I've gone through a number of these types of books and this one is by far the best one out there. The author keeps it light, at the same time conveying what's really important to the new dad with honesty and a brutal sense of humor. It makes the new dad feel like he has some company in this new and alien experience of having kids. After reading it, I recommended it to all my buddies whoare in the same boat. It truly takes the edge off of first time fatherhood. Nice job!

5 out of 5 stars Good satire and short on the new-age stuff. Perfect for guys........2007-02-15

I got started late on the whole fatherhood thing. I retired from the USAF at 39 and had my first daughter shortly thereafter. I got this book and a few others from my girlfriend and this one is my kind of read. Nothing wrong with new-age books, but they just aren't for me. The humor is spot-on and clearly a jab at military lingo, which deserves jabbing. This is definitely not for the stiff-neck Frank Burns-types. Also, the definitions in the back are excellent. I knew nothing (and I mean nothing) about babies and now I've got a whole new vocabulary. One warning..if you're extra sensitive, don't buy it!

A mother tiger wants her baby to go to sleep, but the little tiger resists. "'If I close my eyes,' he said, 'I can't see the sky.'" She assures him that he will not only see the sky when he sleeps, but will float among clouds and be cradled by the moon. Not in the least assured, the little tiger complains that if he closes his eyes, he will miss seeing the tree and the bird with blue feathers. With each concern, his mother consoles him with a comforting thought. If this gentle give-and-take were not calming enough for a bedtime story, Hallensleben's lovely dreamscapes (And If the Moon Could Talk) will surely do the trick. Double-page paintings of cloud animal shapes (with the little tiger cozying up with the moon), the "big mountains where the rain lives," and of mother tiger licking her baby are utterly hypnotic. Young children who are afraid to go to sleep will learn that "Dark is just the other side of light. It's what comes before dreams" and that mom is never very far away. (Ages 3 to 6) --Karin Snelson

    Book Description

A little tiger takes an imaginative journey

The little tiger lay on his back in the tall grass.
"Close your eyes, little tiger," said his mother, "and go to sleep."

But the little tiger is worried about what sleep might bring.
His mother reassures him that once he closes his eyes, he will dream of magical places. And when he awakens, she will be right there, waiting for him.

Alternating between real-life scenes with the baby tiger and his mother and enchanted dream scenes of sleep's possibilities, Kate Banks's simple, comforting text and Georg Hallensleben's bright, colorful illustrations make this a charming bedtime story for small children.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Illustration.......2007-08-22

I first discovered this book at the library. I liked it so much that I've checked it out multiple times and have now purchased it.

Kate Banks' writing is a parent telling a story to a child. The words are soothing, but become more poetic with each reading.
Georg Hallenleben's art fills the page and takes you into the imagination of the writer.

I am a new mom and have received lots of books as gifts. I buy books used or on clearance as I see them. This is the first book I have purchased for my son at full price - I love it and would recommend as my top choice to anyone. I like it for naps.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful bedtime story...........2007-07-04

This book is one of my daughter's favorite bedtimes stories and mine. The little tiger is adorable and I love how all the illustrations complement the storyline. I absolutely LOVE this book and recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Purrfect for putting your little one(s) to sleep!.......2007-03-09

The beautiful illustrations and words of comfort help our two children, ages 2 and 4, at bedtime. The baby tiger expresses his fears of bedtime while mommy tiger provides words to calm and soothe.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2006-05-31

The writer and illustrator of "The Cat Who Walked Across France" team up again in another simple yet totally winning story. This time, our protagonist is a baby tiger--so innocent looking that he resembles a cuddly soft toy--who just can't go to sleep. With the enormous curiosity of any infant, this little tiger doesn't want to close his eyes and miss the sky, the trees, abright blue bird--all the wonderful, wondrous things around him.

In time-honored style, his wise mother counters all his objections with a parallel in his "mind's eye." In fact, she suggests that closing your eyes can bring you an even more varied and rewarding experience:

"The little tiger rolled onto his belly and listened to the leaves quiver overhead. 'If I close my eyes, I can't see the tree.' he said. 'But you can, said his mother. 'You can see many trees, where you can play hide-and-seek until the night finds you and brings you home."

This book was just made for quietly reading to your child as he or she gets into bed! ALong with the quieting possibilities offered in the book's beginning, Kate Banks also soothes the "what ifs." WHen the tiger imagines he's a bird, he suddenly acquires a fear of falling. The mother, who may have read some kids' books herself, answers "I will be there to catch you." IF he gets lost, "then I will find you." Banks knows no fear herself, she even tackles the dark: "'Don't be scared,' said his mother. 'Dark is just the other side of light. It's what comes before dreams.'" (Awwwww...) The sleepy tigers imagines what he might dream of, and illustrator Hallensleben shows us a panoramic view of snow-capped mountains shaded blue and purple, sand dunes with purple-topped palms, and a giant orange fish jumping out of a deep blue sea, a seagull, an orange-billed penguin-ish bird, and the tiger dancing merrily on its back.

Hallensleben draws his typically rich oil colors here, and brush strokes and saturated, unusual color schemes (there's a bit of the Fauve here) are almost too visually exciting for a bedtime book. Still, a darkened room will dampen the colors, and Banks' ever-present, always reassuring mother tiger will undoubtedly work as well with your young audience as it did with her tiger cub.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!.......2005-07-18

This is a beautiful book about going to bed and having wonderful dreams! The story is simple for toddlers to understand and the illustrations are impressive. It really shows young kids' imaginations and that "mama tiger" is always there for her baby.
