KEPT ME UP TOO LATE.......2007-08-12
I enjoyed this novel by Jackson. It is the sequel to Shiver and links many of her characters from previous books that you would not have had to read to enjoy this book. Mystery, thriller, and a bit of romance with nary a slow down. Great read.
Implausable, repetitive, not as good as Shiver.......2007-08-11
This book suffers from some implausible connections and story lines. There are developments and scenes that are both repetitive to Shiver and to earlier in Absolute Fear itself. The introduction of new character Kristi is interesting. Shiver was more dense, more spell binding, not just because it started the story line, but because of better writing. Absolute Fear is worth reading in paperback, but probably from the library. I enjoyed it, but it's a long ways from Shiver in quality and even further from Elizabeth George or James Lee Burke.
P
Just didn't work for me.......2007-08-03
"Cold-Blooded" and "Shiver", the previous two books in this series, were very good. This one, not so much.
Not enough info on:
*Eve's relationship with Cole before the shooting.
*What happened to Eve and Cole in the three months after the shooting.
*What really happened with Cole on the night of the shooting, because the few lines it was covered in were unclear.
Not enough development of the male and female leads. Ex: Did Eve work? If not how did she get her money?
As someone else pointed out why did Cole lose his house, car, job, money and possessions when he hadn't even been indicted yet? His attorney was a friend so he would have gotten a break on that fee and Cole was an attorney also so he would have been able to do a lot of the work on his own.
Now we have two women in the TSTL (too stupid to live), dumber than a box of rocks, don't have two brain cells to rub together category. Eve had found her friend brutally murdered with a tattoo carved into him, she'd been shot and almost died. Then her father was murdered in the same manner as her friend (also with a tattoo) and Eve has been targeted by the killer. Yet she went running around on her own, meeting a friend at a restaurant and then into a deserted insane asylum. TSTL
Kristi's dad is a cop and she's mad at him because he won't give her privileged details on a current investigation so she can write a true crime book. Kristi had been kidnapped, chained to a wall, and almost died because of the serial killer that had been after her. Yet there she is, a year or so later, wandering alone around the same insane asylum as Eve, not at the same time, taking pictures of the area where a nun had just been found also carved up and dead. TSTL
Other reviewers have brought up the fact that the insane asylum plot is getting really old and I agree; its way past time for it to go away.
Then there's the now dead priest who was taking advantage of women and fathering kids all over the place. This is just plain insulting! There have been cases of abuse by priests lately, but the vast majority of priests are good, spiritual people who believe in their calling. This part of the plot was particularly distasteful!
I realize New Orleans is not a huge city but it's not Mayberry so having all these people related to each other goes way past the bounds of being even slightly credible.
Fortunately I bought this book used!
Adult Nancy Drew Thriller?.......2007-07-09
Far-fetched -- where in the world can you have detectives, girlfriends, daughters, killer, mental hospital inmates, be related to each other, with the ending surprising even the characters as to their relationship? Except for the hot and heavy spicing of sex episodes, this could be classified as another Nancy Drew novel.
Absolute Fear Review.......2007-06-13
Absolute Fear was the second book in the New Orleans series. The characters were familiar and I enjoyed them in this book. The new characters were very intriquing. The end really stunned me. I couldn't believe that Kristi saw her father's death in the near future.

Book Description
In the waning days of summer, 2005, a storm with greater impact than the bomb that struck Hiroshima peels the face off southern Louisiana.
This is the gruesome reality Iberia Parish Sheriff's Detective Dave Robicheaux discovers as he is deployed to New Orleans. As James Lee Burke's new novel, The Tin Roof Blowdown, begins, Hurricane Katrina has left the commercial district and residential neighborhoods awash with looters and predators of every stripe. The power grid of the city has been destroyed, New Orleans reduced to the level of a medieval society. There is no law, no order, no sanctuary for the infirm, the helpless, and the innocent. Bodies float in the streets and lie impaled on the branches of flooded trees. In the midst of an apocalyptical nightmare, Robicheaux must find two serial rapists, a morphine-addicted priest, and a vigilante who may be more dangerous than the criminals looting the city.
In a singular style that defies genre, James Lee Burke has created a hauntingly bleak picture of life in New Orleans after Katrina. Filled with complex characters and depictions of people at both their best and worst, The Tin Roof Blowdown is not only an action-packed crime thriller, but a poignant story of courage and sacrifice that critics are already calling Burke's best work.
Customer Reviews:
Haunting and heartbreaking.......2007-10-10
Although the reviews would have you believe this book is about the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, don't kid yourself into thinking that this story starts and stops with the physical destruction caused by those storms. In the evocative language that is the hallmark of Burke's writing, he saturates the reader in a wide range of emotion from a cast of charismatic villains, victims, saints and sinners. The sheer scope of issues he covers is staggering: Besides the destruction of the storms and the willing complicity of our government in the ensuing loss of life, he acknowledges in heartrending clarity the degree of courage and humanity possessed by those who worked through their own losses and exhaustion to help those who needed it most. Beyond the immediate impact of the storms, Burke explores the results of parental cruelty and bigotry; he closely examines the angry protectiveness of parents whose children have been violated or threatened; he looks at the lifelong dependent and independent relationship of the child to the parent. He shows us that even the most degenerate person can be capable of great humanity, and yet irredeemable evil does still walk among us. Burke also touches on man's relationship to God in the midst of woes worthy of Job. (Does the missing priest for whom Detective Robicheaux searches represent nothing less than our own missing faith?). Just reading this book on the surface, it is outstanding crime fiction. But reading below the surface, Burke gives us so much more. This is the best book I've read in -- I don't know how long. It is a masterpiece of art, sociology, psychology, and political commentary. And, oh, yeah, it's a superlative piece of crime fiction. It demands to be read more than once in order to grasp the complexities that, frankly, are jam-packed into the story. Hovering like a sorrowful angel above the characters is Burke's passionate eulogy for NOLA and a culture we may never again witness. I wish I could give this book a crown of stars, not just amazon's five piddly ones.
It is to weep.......2007-10-09
A long time James Lee Burke fan, I read this book while waiting for a colonoscopy. Not only did it make me forget where I was, it made me weep three times.
The Tin Roof Blowdown.......2007-10-02
In the Tin Roof Blowdown, James Lee Burke gives the reader an insight of what it was like to be in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I don't think any other Novelist is as uniquely qualified as he to guide us, the readers, through the complex Gumbo that is New Orleans unique culture. Mr. Burke has allowed each of his readers to accompany him through the long chronology of his Dave Robicheaux books. I think the reader frequently wishes that Mr. Burke had made his character a little less age specific, so that the reader(s) could enjoy the books longer. Mr Burke, to me, writes with the ease and skill of a Poet, engaged in the crime novel genre. It is a certainty that Mr. Burke has few equals, and one would look for a long time to find a person who didn't like this affable Novelist's works.
How does a series keep getting better?.......2007-10-02
Just fantastic. The series just gets better and better. Everytime I think the series has peaked: In the Electric Mist, Dixie City Jam, Sugar Cane Alley.....it gets better.
Really really good.
ANOTHER GREAT ROBICHEAUX ADVENTURE.......2007-10-02
JAMES LEE BURKE DOES IT AGAIN. HE SPINS CURRENT TOPICS (KATRINA, BLOOD DIAMONDS AND RACE RELATIONS) INTO A GREAT NOVEL. GIVES THE TRUE FLAVOR (AND SMELL - YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN THERE) OF NEW ORLEANS AND IT'S RESIDENTS AS VERY FEW AUTHORS COULD DO. WORTH BUYING AND READING. BURKE NEEDS TO START GIVING CLETE PURCELL MENTION ON THE COVER.

Book Description
From multi-platinum rap star C-Murder comes his debut novel--a gritty, compelling, and unforgettable story of surviving on the deadly streets of New Orleans...
There's A Time To Go Hard, And A Time To Chill...
The day the cops took his daddy away for murder, a new emotion gripped five-year-old Daquan Watson's heart: Hate. It would stay with him as he came up in The Calliope, New Orleans' most notorious, drug-infested housing projects, where every brother is a soldier goin' to war every day. Grandma Mama does her best to raise him the right way, but those streets keep calling. Trying to get ahead in such a harsh environment can make your heart turn cold--unless you learn how to listen to your guardian angel...
There's A Time To Take One For The Team...
But the violence at The Calliope is nothing compared to what Daquan experiences doing time at Scotland Correctional Center for youth, watching cats get stabbed over card games, young boys get raped, and racism of the worst kind, even from the black guards. A voice inside tells him he'd better learn to use his anger--instead of letting it use him, ya heard?
And A Time To Think For Yourself...
From the moment Daquan heard his first blast of hip hop, the music spoke to him, and for him. While his friends are getting their street hustle cracking, his way with words is leading him in another direction. With a good woman by his side, he's owning up to his responsibilities and building a new future with New Orleans' biggest rap label. But what about his homies in The CP3--will they ever be truly free? Daquan knows his hardened heart will never allow him to become a victim. He can only pray it won't allow him to become a predator...

Hotest Book.......2007-08-09
The book Death Around The Corner by C-Murder is about a boy named Daquan growing up in the hard streets of N.O. projects but for Daquan it wasn't always like that. When Daquan was 5 years old he witness his father getting taken away by the police for murder. Once his father was taken it went all downhill from there. Daquan's mother had left him and he was force to live with his grandmother and the mean streets of Calliope Projects, and the streets doesn't give nothing but takes everything.
While living with his Grandmother Daquan seen things kids his age would never see in there life time. Join Daquan as he leads you to a wild roller coaster ride about his life.
This book has got to be the hotest book of the summer. The way C-Murder wrote this book is making it seem like its REAL! This book is a real page-turner and the ending was like ....DAMN.... But Kudos to you C-Murder, and now you can add Author to your resume. 5 STARS!!!!
Good Book.......2007-05-28
I really enjoyed this book. It is very real and doesn't hold anything back. To be truthful the only reason i got it at first is because C-Murder is one of my favorite rappers so I wanted to just have it and see what it was about. But once I started reading it, it was very engaging and kept me wanting to read and see what was going to happen. So I do encourage others to get this book.
Breakthrough book.......2007-05-25
I had been anticipating this book for months, and the wait was worth it. C-Murder did a great job with this book.
Daquan witnessed murder at a young age, and grew up so fast when he moved with Grandma Mama in CP. Jerome helped him age quicker than Daquan needed too, but he adapted to his environment. It was hard to remember that Daquan was so young, because the things he saw and did in his young life, no one should have to ever go through, and some never will. But thats the game.
The book was so real and not hard to believe. The events were dipicted in such detail, but not overdone. A great read, and I hope this won't be C-Murder's only book. GREAT JOB!
C-Murder did his thing .......2007-05-07
Read the book about 2 or 3 days after I received, it was real easy reading. He could definetely make a movie out of this book. I recommend this to fans of Donald Goines, Nikki Taylor, and all the other real life reality authors.
Hood Certified!!.......2007-05-07
This book is hood certified. C-Murder paints a vivid picture of the hood. This book is as real as it gets. I would recommend it to any C-Murder fan. I can't wait until his next book comes out!

Book Description
After his blockbuster success of Little Black Girl Lost, Keith Lee Johnson takes us back to 1950's New Orleans, into the world of betrayal, envy, lust, and murder, where everyone has ulterior motives. Little Girl Lost left you in shock right up to the very end with its revealing truths of the world of Johnnie Wise, a 15-year-old girl, who was being pursued by ruthless crime boss, Napoleon Bentley, who will stop at nothing to have this young beauty.
Little Black Girl Lost II, begins as we find Johnnie in bed, and even though there is a thunderstorm directly over her Ashland Estates home, she is sleeping soundly for the first time since the murder of Richard Goode (her mother's killer), and the subsequent riots. However, during her waking hours, Napoleon Bentley enters her mind more often than she'd care to admit. She wants him to bed her again, but she loves Lucas Matthews, her boyfriend. Or is he?

A Wonderful Sequil.......2007-06-06
Before reading this book, it is important to read Little Black Girl Lost (1). Johhnie Wise has gotten wiser and is making her life hers. Continue the journey with her as Keith Lee Johnson captivates you with the ongoing trials of this young lady. The additional characters are a plus to this book. Caution....don't start without having Little Black Girl Lost 3 at your fingertips.
readaholic .......2007-04-03
Little Black Girl lost 2 was more inspiring and easier to follow after getting to know the characters in the first novel. It was inspiring to know the residents of Ashland Estates, but they too were trapped in a fable.
The novel was very well written and straight to the point. I really enjoyed it. I also like the fact that the author came out of the writing box and just wrote the story. I am not a fan of fluff.

But the reconciliation is shattered when Shamus is kidnapped from their home. And when Carmela hurries to tell Shamus's Uncle Henry, she finds him sitting in his library-with a bullet through his forehead.
As a memorial to Uncle Henry, Carmela puts together a sentimental scrapbook of memories and keepsakes. What she doesn't realize is that her book holds a clue that could identify the fiend behind the kidnapping and killing. And when the murderer finds out that she may be on to him, he's going to try to close the book on Carmela once and for all.
Customer Reviews:
Scrapbookers might enjoy this!.......2007-05-13
In addition to being a mystery lover, I also enjoy scrapbooking. Laura Childs has written another cozy story for others like me. She is one of those authors whose books I anxiously await. She manages to keep you entertained and wanting more when your book is finished. I just wish she could write faster! (smile)
A Scrapbooking Mystery.......2007-01-05
I really like all her books but this one was recameaded by our yahoo group. It not only has scrapbooking but alot about altered books. How to etc. That is why our altered book group thought we would like to read it. It is a very good read even for people who are not into scrapbooking or altered books. They might even get interested in doing so after reading this book. Good mystery.
Post-Katrina New Orleans.......2006-12-19
Carmela, owner of a New Orleans scrapbooking store, is trying to get her business back together as well as her relationship with her ex-husband, Shamus. Things change quickly when Shamus is kidnapped and his Uncle Henry is murdered. Of course the New Orleans police cannot be trusted to solve the mystery, so Carmela launches her own investigation. She and her friend Ava talk to several possible suspects in an attempt to find out who had a reason to resort to kidnapping and murder. The best thing about this book is the setting, and there are quite a few interesting references to different aspects of New Orleans. On the down side, there are several spelling mistakes in the book which is always a distraction. Also the plot is not very compelling and the characters are quite one-dimensional. I found myself not very interested in whether Carmela and Shamus continue their on-again-off-again relationship or not.
Scrapbooking + Mystery = perfect entertainment for a Scrapbook Lady!.......2006-10-22
I go by Katie the Scrapbook Lady online, so I think you can probably figure out that I would enjoy a book like this! I had not read any of the previous books by Laura Childs so I wasn't sure if I would be able to "get into it" but I had no trouble! The characters and setting are fascinating and I love the way scrapbooking was casually woven into the storyline.
Murder mysteries have long been a favorite genre of mine and this one did not dissappoint. The action was fast paced and the story is well written. I have to say that it really made me want to see the splendor of the French Quarter for myself, I have always longed to see New Orleans and have felt so sad for what the area and it's people have been through since Katrina. Nice to see a fun story that uses the "new" New Orleans as a backdrop.
I'm excited to read more in this scrapbooking mystery series!
Still good.......2006-10-01
I enjoyed the new installment. I too was concerned about the series continuing after Katrina and was glad that it did. This story was not as strong as the others, but I feel the original story was written before Katrina and needed "tweeking" after the hurrican. I am glad that we are seeing the "true" side of Shamus. I do not him with Carmela and hope this is over. My only problem with the book was the editing. The first sentence of the first page had a mistake, one I had to look at several times to relize it was the book and not me. This followed throughout the book. At times it was frustrating to read and I had to put it down and come back. But as far as the story, it was good. Hope the series continues and goes back to roots of Carmala and her store and friends, minus Shamus as a love interest. Carmala needs a REAL MAN!!!

Customer Reviews:
Powerful and captivating.......2007-09-30
This was the first (but certainly won't be the last) of my reads in the Noir series. I picked this up as a Louisiana native and lover of New Orleans and have to admit I was extremely pleased. Really enjoy the way the book was split "Before the Levees Broke" and "Living in Atlantis".
Great read for anyone who has never been to New Orleans and especially for those of us who "know what it means to miss New Orleans"...
Heartbreaking, Gritty Stories of The Big Easy.......2007-08-14
I picked this book up because Julie Smith is the editor and has a story in it. I have to say that hers was my favorite, by far. She's an ace mystery writer and I highly recommend all of her books if you haven't yet discovered them.
Exploring the darker side of the "Big Easy", these tales are unputdownable, gritty and down-to-earth whether dealing with the aftermath of Katrina, Mardi Gras or the seamier underside of life in the French Quarter.
I was happy to discover that a portion of the profits from this book are being donated to the New Orleans Public Library, a fabulous cause.
I'd never before read the "Noir" series, but I plan to look up other books in it. It's well deserving of five stars!!
Julie Smith.......2007-05-25
Very powerful and worth reading. Put Los Angeles Noir on your list too.
one of those books you just can't put down.......2007-04-23
I picked this book up at Pirate's Alley in New Orleans the day before I had to fly back home. I started reading it on the plane, came up for air in order to change planes in Dallas, and finished it before landng in LA. Every story was powerful; those in Part I: Before the Levees Broke as well as in Part II: Life In Atlantis. My favorites: Two-Story Brick Houses ( This short story captures the brutality of how cruel girls can treat one another), Muddy Pond, Annunciation Shotgun, and Night Taxi. If you want to experience the pain and sorrow of the people of New Orleans pre- and post- K, this is a MUST READ.

A-Z Review.......2006-05-27
I found this story to be entertaining and enjoyable. I found myself anxious to find out what Ruth Rose, Dink, and Josh would find on their hike. Would they get to see a Zombie or a alligator? Would the village people leave after their cemetary graves were being robbed? I felt like I was with the children when they got up at midnight and followed the glow of a flash light. They were very brave when they watched someone or something come up out of the grave. I'm sure that any adventurous person would enjoy this mystery.

iT IS SO GOOD. I HAVENEVER SEEN A BOOK LIKE IT BEFORE!
For criminal's sake...by PH.......2005-05-01
I would give this book ten stars because of how the author describes the people. What happens is the pack of kids named Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose visit a cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana, called Old Forest Trail. They stayed in a hotel with Ruth Rose's Grandmother. Meanwhile, they see their friend, Jack. So, they go on a camping trip mainly to see alligator nests. Then, two graves in the cemetery get robbed! Jack goes to kneel on red clay. Then at night, the shining light of someone's flashlight awakens Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose. They go and explore. They see someone who is tall, bright haired, and is scraping red dirt off his pants. Dink suspects it could be Jack.
In the morning they see a trail of bare footprints; they follow this trail to meet a man named Byron. Byron was tall, bright haired, but most importantly, he has a shovel with red dirt! They immediately report to Ruth Rose's grandmother about the incident. So they go talk to Byron, he admitted he was taking his owl named Bill hunting. He found the thief's wallet. He pulled out the ID and showed it to them. Guess who the thief was! They called the NOPD and showed them the evidence.
Anyone who reads this book and others in the series should get an A in Reading for enjoying some of the most mysterious books in history.

Book Description
Take a little James Lee Burke, a touch of Ross Macdonald, and a dash of Raymond Chandler, the conventions of the classic American detective story and the fine, thoughtful writing of an original new talent - and you still don't quite have The Long-Legged Fly. This is a smart, tough novel teeming with life and always on the verge of igniting from its own energy. In steamy modern-day New Orleans, black private detective Lew Griffin has once again taken on a seemingly hopeless missing persons case. The trail takes him through the underbelly of the French Quarter with its bar girls, pimps, and tourist attractions. As his search leads to one violent dead end, and then another, Griffin is confronted with the prospect that his own life has come to resemble those he is attempting to find; he is becoming as lost as the frail identities he tries to recover. Waking in a hospital after an alcoholic binge, Griffin finds another chance in a nurse who comes to love him, but again he reverts to his old life in the mean streets among the predators and their prey. When his son vanishes, Griffin searches back through the tangles and tatters of his life, knowing that he must solve his personal mysteries before he can venture after the whereabouts of others. The Long-Legged Fly is exciting, visceral entertainment that takes the reader into a corner of society where life is fought for as much as it is lived. James Sallis has written a compelling novel that succeeds both as detective fiction and worthy literature.

something good........2007-08-27
i have never been a big fan of the P.I./mystery genre. but i want to be. so i've been giving it a shot here and there this last year. this book is the sort of thing that could get me where i want to go. other such books i have read with the toughguy protagonist who has a sensitive side and a penchant for existential musings have been a bit over the top. silly and cliche ridden. not so this book. my copy has a blurb from the boston globe on the cover that simply says "wonderful." yes, indeed. the narrative is actually several stories, following lew griffin from 1964 on up to 1990. it's certainly as much character study as mystery, maybe more so. and it's interesting all the way. the city of new orleans is ever present throughout, almost like a major character itself. mr sallis's writing is smooth, clear, and its own creature. even before finishing this book I went on-line and ordered several more books by this author. who knows, i may turn the corner and make it as a fan of mysteries after all.
The Long Legged Fly - Review by Mario Baldassarrini.......2007-05-06
Not very interesting - I have read this book some time ago and I don't remember what it is about.
Where have I been.......2006-04-14
I'm late to find this author, but I will make up for lost time. Very different take on a detective. Let's see how it goes from here. Don't expect the usual.
Target Market.......2002-12-29
If novels were "branded" at point-of-sale not only by genre but also by target demographic -- in a way analogous to the way in which many cable channels work to "brand" themselves as the first choice among their own target audience -- then this series by James Sallis would almost certainly belong "on PBS".
I had hesitated to sample this series because -- with no just cause -- I had concerned myself with the possibility that this series may play better on "The WB", and I encourage you not to make my mistake.
Lew Griffin is a fully-fleshed character -- unusually multidimensional in comparison to any other fictional detective I have had the pleasure of knowing. If I were any other author of the genre I would envy Sallis greatly for his ability to make a character feel so real, so likeable, and so constantly interesting -- more so when I stop to consider that objectively, and only in retrospect, the plotting here seems pretty simple -- its best and perhaps primary feature simply being the means by which new facets and depths of Lew's character are revealed.
But PBS? Well, I also don't want to scare you off by virtue of whatever negative opinions you may have about that. If you want a hard-boiled detective, I don't think they come much harder than Lew Griffin. By the end of the second novel in this series (Moth) Lew has bashed, been bashed and gotten smashed with the best of them. And yes, there are women in his life. Interesting women!
... So, check it out and in so doing, encourage Sallis to provide us with many more additions. These are solid gold.
The haunting study of a unique detective........2001-03-02
African American detective Lew Griffin first appeared back in 1992 in this novel by acclaimed, although largely unknown, author James Sallis. The story follows Griffin as he investigates four cases of missing persons. His success varies and even when he locates the people he's looking for, he never actually finds the object of his search.
This mystery is not really a mystery at all. Rather, it's the story of thirty years in the life of a hurting, flawed man trying to live a quiet existence in New Orleans. Rather than being epic in its sweep, though, "Fly" is minimalist. Sallis is a poet in addition to being an author and it shows in this book.
I suppose it's understandable that Sallis hasn't enjoyed wider success in the genre--his books certainly don't grab you in the same way that most mysteries do--but it's definitely a shame. Readers who are interested in more than simply solving a mystery will definitely find something to admire in this book.

Great.......2007-03-09
Good work of present day good vs. evil sorcery. Better written and with more interesting characters than most in this field!
Christian Warrior Woman.......2007-02-10
Princess of Wands (2006) is the first Fantasy novel of a new series. Barbara Everette is a soccer mom, living in Algomo, Mississippi, with a husband, three kids and an SUV. She is a devout Christian, without being evangelical about it. Yet she also has lived in various nations around the world, has a Black Belt in an eclectic mix of martial arts, and carries a licensed H&K .45 automatic in her purse.
In this novel, Barbara loves her kids, but feels the need for some time away from them. She defers to her husband in everything, but has a way around direct confrontations. Mark is a couch potato, especially during the football season, and very unlikely to even notice that he is agreeing to something that he wouldn't condone if he was in his right mind. She asks for, and receives, permission to take a vacation.
Usually Barbara goes to Gulfport on these trips away from husband and kids, but this time she heads toward Louisiana. She follows her instincts away from New Orleans, which is currently plagued with a series killer called the Ripper, and heads off the freeway onto state roads. She ends up in a dark little town called Thibideau within bayou country.
The hotel is older than the nonexistent hills and doesn't even have locks on the stateroom doors. The bathroom is down the hall. There is no phone in the room or at the desk, but there is a payphone outside the Piggly Wiggly.
Barbara is warned not to go out on the streets at night, as the bull alligators wander through the town looking for mates. She spends the night in her room, with wedges holding the hall door tight against the frame. The next morning, she ventures out to continue her trek, but finds that her car won't start and no rentals are available. She is stranded in the town until a part is delivered and installed.
Detective Sergeant Kelly Lockhart of the New Orleans Police Department is working on the Ripper case. All the victims so far have been prostitutes, many of whom are professionally known to Kelly. There are no leads, but plenty of evidence. The FBI has been called in, but hasn't contributed anything to date, although they have lost a large scale found on one body.
Kelly develops a lead that takes him to Thibideau and meets Barbara. They have a mutual aversion to Chief Deputy Etienne Mondaine. The local sheriff had died a month before and Deputy Mondaine was now responsible for law enforcement within the county.
Augustus Germaine is an FBI consultant on Special Circumstances, i.e., the supernatural. He arrives in New Orleans after Kelly leaves for Thibideau. Germaine briefs Kelly's boss, Lieutenant Chimot, on their findings; there are definite indications of demonic manifestation in the Ripper murders.
In this story, Barbara and Kelly find that something supernatural has taken over the town. Chief Deputy Mondaine organizes an armed manhunt for the two of them. When his men capture Kelly and invade Barbara's hotel room, she escapes and evades the hunters and accidentally discovers Kelly's whereabouts.
The confrontations are violent and bloody, but the demon gets fried. Germaine arranges for Barbara's release from local detainment and later recruits her for a special demon-hunting group. The members of this group have a wide variety of religious convictions, but Christians are notably absent.
Her first assignment is at an SF convention. Someone has been ritually killing young women who have recently attended such conventions. In most cases, one writer -- K. Goldberg -- had also been present at these conventions. Barbara, the adept Janea and FBI agent Donahue are sent to the Virginia convention being attended by Goldberg.
This story is full of inside humor and twisted names. But some characters are probably not whom you think they are. Moreover, one of them is possessed by a demon.
This reviewer is rather appalled by Barbara's subservient attitude toward her husband. Few Christian denominations nowadays expect their women to subordinate themselves to their husbands, but there are some fundamentalist groups that have such attitudes. After all, Paul -- writer of the New Testament book of Romans from which such churches mostly get their misogynist views -- did himself appoint several women to positions -- church bishops -- with authority over both men and women.
Then I realized that this is the first volume of a series. There will be plenty of time for Barbara to develop her character. With her take charge attitude, Mark better learn to listen and make notes after Barbara fully matures in her religion.
Highly recommended for Ringo fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of desperate struggles, demonic terror and Christian warriors.

Wonderful Action and entertainment!.......2006-11-10
The book was very entertaining. The character development was well done and I look forward to future series releases.
Omen meets Lives of the Saints.......2006-05-31
This is a good story - excellent in its first segment, and not as good, but still interesting in its later stages. A Christian wife and mother finds herself caught up in a fight against a diabolic manifestation. She triumphs, and becomes part of an "inter-faith" team fighting the forces of supernatural evil in the world. Not as preachy (John Ringo's recent books have been pushing the political line of right-wing republican views fairly strongly) and entertaining, but John has done better. Hopefully there will be a sequel which will be better.
Ringo's Lighter Side.......2006-05-08
I have read all of Ringo's other books and was suprised with this one. I like it though, good against evil is always a good plot. I also like his play on SciFi authors names. If you read a lot of SciFi/Fantasy you will be able to pick out the authors that he has mentioned or used as characters but with a slightly different name.

Book Description
The phenomenal #1 New York Times-bestselling author presents a novel set deep in the bayou of Louisiana-where the only witness to a long-ago tragedy is a once-grand house.
Declan Fitzgerald had always been the family maverick, but even he couldn't understand his impulse to buy a dilapidated mansion on the outskirts of New Orleans. All he knew was that ever since he first saw Manet Hall, he'd been enchanted-and obsessed-with it. So when the opportunity to buy the house comes up, Declan jumps at the chance to live out a dream.
Determined to restore Manet Hall to its former splendor, Declan begins the daunting renovation room by room, relying on his own labor and skills. But the days spent in total isolation in the empty house take a toll. He is seeing visions of days from a century past, and experiencing sensations of terror and nearly unbearable grief-sensations not his own, but those of a stranger. Local legend has it that the house is haunted, and with every passing day Declan's belief in the ghostly presence grows.
Only the companionship of alluring Angelina Simone can distract him from the mysterious happenings in the house, but Angelina too has her own surprising connection to Manet Hall-a connection that will help Declan uncover a secret that's been buried for a hundred years.

Awesome Suspense, mystery, and romance.......2007-07-16
The minute I got to the ghost part, I was freaked out. This was a very intriguing book from beginning to end. This was one of the best books that i've read from her. It was full of Suspense, mystery, and romance with a twist of merging between different worlds/times. I couldn't put it down!
IT'S GREAT!!!!.......2007-04-23
Another great book by Nora Roberts!!!! When I first started reading the book and got to the ghost part...I though oh no! But, it was written so well and so intriguing, I couldn't put it down. What a different story line!!! I loved it!
Sweet Story.......2007-04-11
I loved this book, I prefer ghost stories and this is one of my favorites. I loved the twist and I'll leave it at that so as not to spoil this book. Just a great book, sweet storyline, and very beautiful descriptions of the land, the house, and the people. Very good read.
A Romance About A Man.......2007-03-28
I think one of the things I like most about Nora Roberts is the way she portrays men. Somehow, though she makes them romantic, they are still... guys.
This is the story of Declan, a guy who was a lawyer, in Boston, of "the" Boston Fitzgeralds, engaged to be married. Then he decides that he does not love his fiancee, pretty much hates his job, and needs a BIG change.
He comes to see that he had been making decisions based on what his family wanted for him.
He buys an old run-down mansion in the deep south. It's complete with ghosts and cool neighbors. He remodels the house through the book, solves a 100 year old mystery, and wins the girl (no spoiler there, I'm sure).
And though he loves the heroine long before she loves him, though he questions his own sanity with the whole haunting thing, he is never less than a very strong, male man.
Great summer read!!!

Bad.......2007-03-09
Ghost stories can be fun and exciting. This was boring and weird. I admitt I don't understand re-encarnation at all and find stories where the hero and heroine are "reborn" or take over other people's bodies rather creepy. But I thought if anyone could sale me on the story it would be Nora Roberts. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to. First off the good/twin bad twin seemed like too low of a cliche for Nora Roberts to stoop too. All thrown together maded for a very boring and weird story.
