Customer Reviews:
Maravilloso!.......2007-08-29
Deception.......2007-08-25
I had a deception with this novel and this author. I thought it was first of all more organized in his thoughts, second, the theme was not one that lead to any valuable thought or of value to society, except just an invention of his imagination, which seems very convoluted. I read the one he wrote about the coronel did not have any answer or something like that, and that one I liked. But I thought this was his best novel, and I was far wrong. Gloria
An over-rated Nobel laureate.......2007-07-03
I read Spanish-language books to try to improve my Spanish vocabulary and reading ability. I had already read this author's "Putas tristes", and his autobiography, "Vivir para contarla". In the latter book García mentioned that he had read Romulo Gallegos when he was young. The latter's book, "Dóña Bárbara", which truly IS a classic of Latin American writing. I found García's book to have the same theme ("the struggle between landowners and peasants in L.A.), and even the style, to be essentially the same. Many other Latin authors, such as Isabel Allende, seem to also use the same plagiaristic ploy. Another thing annoying about García is his self-admitted tendency to employ outrageous exagerations with a straight face. In one episode of "Cien años" he describes a man so strong he carries a store counter from a store out into the street, and it too eleven men to get it back in. Come on now!!
One of my favourite books in a wonderful edition.......2007-07-01
I first read Cien años de soledad during my last year of high school, and I have read it several times again since then. Everytime I read it, I remember the words of my literature professor, after he asked us to buy the book: " I envy you all so much, so much - he said- because nothing compares to the feeling of reading Cien años for the first time. I wish I could feel like that again." He was right.
This is a magical book, and this anniversary edition one that deserves a place in the library of all those who love Gabo.
One hundred years of pleasure.......2007-06-13

Book Description
Casebooks in Criticism offer analytical and interpretive frameworks for understanding key texts in world literature and film. Each casebook reprints documents relating to a work's historical context and reception, presents the best critical studies, and, when possible, features an interview with the author. Accessible and informative to scholars, students, and nonspecialist readers alike, the books in this series provide a wide range of critical and informative commentaries on major texts. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude is arguably the most important novel in twentieth-century Latin American literature. This Casebook features ten critical articles on Garcia Marquez's great work. Carefully selected from the most important work on the novel over the past three decades, they include pieces by Carlos Fuentes, Iris Zavala, James Higgins, Jean Franco, Michael Wood, and Gene H. Bell-Villada. Among the intriguing aspects of the work discussed are its mythic dimension, its "magical" side, its representations of women, its relationship with past chronicles of exploration and discovery, its portrayals of Western power and imperialism, its astounding diffusion throughout the globe and the media, and its simple truth-telling, its fidelity to the tangled history of Latin America. The book incorporates several theoretical approaches--historical, feminist, postcolonial; the first English translation of Fuentes's renowned, oft-cited, eight page meditation on the work; a general introduction; and a 1982 interview with Garcia Marquez.
Customer Reviews:
This book is a treasure........2005-03-26
This is my favorite book. I have read it so many times I have lost the count, and each time I feel and live it and I can't put it down. It's the brightest jewel in the Latin American literature. This is a jealous book, it's not for the people who "act" as if they were reading, while thinking of something else. It demands your full attention. If you have trouble following a complex story line, I recomend you to read it while keeping a pencil and paper handy so you can draw the Buendia's family tree. It will help you to follow the story. That's what I told my mom to do and it worked out right. If you are feeling adventurous and want to read a story full of life, passion, death, and love, this is the book for you. I have never ever found another book so human inspite of being magical. I invite you to read it, if you really follow this book, you won't regret the hours you spent immersed in it.
Helpful, but like so many anthologies, uneven.......2003-03-24
This book cannot fail to be of use to anyone trying to gain a fuller understanding of García Márquez's ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE. Although not useless to advanced readers, the collection is explicitly targeted at readers approaching the text for the first time. I imagine they had this in mind as a college text to accompany the novel.
Anthologies are almost always uneven, with some essays justifying the cost of the book, and others that seem to either muddy the water or just waste one's time. This collection is no exception. Several of the essays are superb. In general, as the editor acknowledges in the Introduction, the clearest, most helpful essays are those by scholars working in Great Britain. The least helpful are those scholars--either American or Latin American--in the grips of literary theory. One of the essays is so densely written that nearly the entire piece consists of buzz words from cultural studies and comparative literature. I can't imagine many college level readers having the background to penetrate such an essay, while many advanced scholars will recognize that such an essay covers up lack of content by an excess of lingo.
Nonetheless, by picking and choosing, one will gain a great deal of help in reading García Márquez's great novel. There is a good deal of helpful biographical and historical information, as well as a number of excellent critical pieces analyzing various aspects of the book. I found the essays in the first two thirds of the book to be more helpful than those in the last third, with some exceptions in each section.
And yes, the font is small, but I didn't have the trouble reading the book that the first reviewer had.
Excellent material.......2002-11-18
Excellent material but the print is too small to read without strain even with glasses.

Book Description
This history of a family is an amalgamation of Garcia Marquez's shorter fiction, American fiction, biblical parables, and quixotic experiences of his own unique life story. His is a community crowded with people and personal narratives, confusion, and progressive decline. The novel is a journey through life, caught on paper, so real that you'll swear you can smell it.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but overrated work of fiction.......2003-12-01
To read Gabriel Garcia Marquez's masterwork is to confront one's demons and one's devices in a monumentally singular reading experience. What does that mean? I have no idea, but I thought it sounded good when I wrote it.
Seriously though, you could do worse than to read this book. Although, it is overrated, and at times, you will think it is pretentiously boring. Still, there were enough good stretches of narrative beauty to overtake the sometimes tiresome ponderousness of the story.
epic voyage.......2002-10-08
One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of those few novels that is magical, beautiful and can capture the very kernel of mind to wake you up from the reality of Latin American world. The writer questions the propriety of the superstructure of the governance of mankind and the whole lot of theories and principles which are supposed to deliver the mankind from the drudgeries and miseries but which do not.To read this novel is to experience darkness and the failure of mankind.
The best book ever.......2001-12-18
This was really the best book I ever read. The non-standard use of time and space concepts is amazing. I read it in two languages (both translated) and I started to study Spanish just to read this book in original. Everytime I read this book it gives me a completely different view.
10,000 years in print.......1999-09-24
In 10,000 years, when most of the world's literature is lost and forgotten, this book will still be read. Like "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Les Miserables", I will read it again and again until my eyesite fails. Then my childen will read it aloud to me. Then I can die.
The best piece of literature I have ever enjoyed........1999-06-12
Turn off the television and forget the stupid movies. You've had enough TV for a lifetime. This book will take you where you want to go...an escape in fascinating literature, only to come home to reality and beauty and the unique bizarreness of life--in touch with the human race! From the very first page--profound reading. Marquez is truly a literary genius. I positively loved this book.

Book Description
At eighteen, Soledad couldn't get away fast enough from her contentious family with their endless tragedies and petty fights. Two years later, she's an art student at Cooper Union with a gallery job and a hip East Village walk-up. But when Tía Gorda calls with the news that Soledad's mother has lapsed into an emotional coma, she insists that Soledad's return is the only cure. Fighting the memories of open hydrants, leering men, and slick-skinned teen girls with raunchy mouths and snapping gum, Soledad moves home to West 164th Street. As she tries to tame her cousin Flaca's raucous behavior and to resist falling for Richie -- a soulful, intense man from the neighborhood -- she also faces the greatest challenge of her life: confronting the ghosts from her mother's past and salvaging their damaged relationship.
Evocative and wise, Soledad is a wondrous story of culture and chaos, family and integrity, myth and mysticism, from a Latina literary light.
Download Description
From a talented young Dominican-American writer comes an evocative and funny debut novel about what happens when you take the woman out of the old neighborhood but can't take the old neighborhood out of the woman.
Customer Reviews:
If I could give it more stars I would!.......2006-07-07
I just loved this book...I identified so much with Soledad as a young Dominican woman trying to carve her spot in the world...Angie writes with such simplicity that it is just captivating...this was a book that I highlighted and made many notes on...I especially loved the line on the fact that written words last forever...I don't remember exactly how it went but I felt that to be so true...I highly recommend this book
Amazing Book! .......2006-01-20
I LOVE this book! Angie captures the universal struggles of Latina women and serves as an inspiration to us all. In one sitting I read through the entire book and felt that I had found my one favorite author!
Soledad is my favorie book...please buy this book! It is a MUST!
Soledad.......2005-05-27
Ages 13 and up.

She returns to Washington Heights knowing what she will have to face a overly inmature cousin, Flacaand the realationships that ran her out of her neighborhood like her relationship with her mother. At the beginning sheresist falling in love with Richie claiming that he is not her type. For Soledads mothers past to go away she has to return to where her mathers past is and face her mothers ghosts. Once the story starts to unravel you will not be able to put the book down, and if you know some spanish you will understand alot of the words the characters say Hey you do not need to know spanish just have a dictionary in handy:).
EXCELENT!!!.......2005-03-10
I am a 25 year old-dominican. And just like soledad my parents migrated here and moved into Washington Heights. This book is so wonderfully put together that I felt like I was Soledad! Not only was I familiar with the places but I lived on 164th Street like she did and was able to walk the streets along with her as I read the book. It is the first time that I read a book by a Dominican writer that does not take away the essence of our people, our language, our culture. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read.
Latina's determination.......2004-05-20
At first I was attracted to this book for it's cover, but then i read it's tittle "Soledad" which means loneliness, and i thought maybe this book will keep me conected to my roots, and it did.
The story about a girl that wants a different future than everybody else, she wants to separate herself from what she has known all her life, to explore new paths that may take her far away.
Once she takes a new path she is forced to come back to take care of her mom who has checked out of the world. Soledad finds herself back in a place she longed to leave, she finds people she wanted to forget, but they all have something different to show her. Back in the old neighborhood she finds love where least expected, and at the end she realizes that everything she was looking for was always right in front of her.
I recomend this book to people who want to learn about a part of Latin cultures in the US.

Garcia Marquez As A Teaching Tool
One has to come to the USA to find the most authoritative treatises on the Colombian Nobel Prize (1982). And then it is in the USA, although populated by Hispanic experts, that one has to come to find the most advanced knowledge on Maestro Garcia Marquez in the most academic of senses. To this collection of expertise is that the book by the Valdeses. They have brought together several essays by several experts on Garcia Marquez's masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude. I do not think there is a more reviewed book, Hispanic book of this century for sure, than the novel studied in the masterful collection.

Instant Classic.......2000-08-01
One Hundred Years of Solitude tells the story of several generations of a Colombian family while supernatural occurrences and unbelievable events are described with unblinking sincerity. Marquez, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982, commands such mastery of language that his prose reads like verse. The beauty of his words wraps the reader inextricably into the fates of the Buendias. Their loves, their wars, their brutality, their death and dreams, are all told with Marquez's special gift of prose. One Hundred Years of Solitude is probably Marquez's finest work, destined to be a classic of world literature.

Customer Reviews:
A valuable exploration of ways of approaching the novel.......2001-03-09
Regina Janes offers a comprehensive, engaging analysis of Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, taking into account the multiple "modes of reading" and interpreting this masterpiece and Latin American bestseller. Janes approaches this novel through its literary and historical contexts and explains the many ways that readers have understood One Hundred Years of Solitude: politically, biographically, intertextually, and from the angles of myth and magical realism. In the process, Janes provides a convincing examination of the novel itself, observing that "If García Márquez does have a single, modern myth for us, it may be the desirability of preserving, fostering, nurturing our sense of unreality. Neither the real world in which we are mired nor the books we read to remove ourselves, temporarily, to a better world should be entirely believed" (p.130).
I appreciate Janes's work for its recognition and analysis of the multiple ways of interpreting this text, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the critical discourse surrounding One Hundred Years of Solitude.
Not a book for the shallow.......2000-02-07
100 Years of Solitude is a masterpiece that weaves a beautiful vision of magical reality responsible not only for telling about Latin America's prevoking use of imagination and mysticism, but giving a semi-fictional writen history of Colombia's battle for independence. Garcia Marquez can make you think you have wings.
What's All the Fuss About?.......2000-01-13
Everyone says that One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of the most important books ever written (it was even runner up to best novel of the century in TIME Magazine), but I beg to differ. I found the author's style unpolished and uncontrolled, I found it to be too long, and I've read better attempts at mystical realism. Catch 22 is a wonderful book and pulls the style of wonderfully, while Marquez lacks in almost every respect.
