Book Description

Pin-ups from the 19th century to the 1960s

It all started around 1900, and wouldn't you know the French were the first? Whether you call them men's sophisticates, nudie books, or girly magazines, this long-ignored art form has a rich international history. Author Dian Hanson, a girly magazine editor for 25 years, follows the evolution of the genre from 19th century France through the Jazz Age, two world wars, the breast-centric 1950s to the end of the swinging 60s. Along the way you'll see hundreds of vintage magazines from Argentina, England, France, Germany, Mexico, and the US. Some covers are exquisitely painted by top pin-up artists Enoch Bolles, George Quintana, Earl Moran, and Peter Driben. Others are posed by Hollywood stars like Jane Mansfield, Tina Louise, and Marilyn Monroe. All are fascinating artifacts of their time, including La Vie Parisienne, the first men's lifestyle magazine from 1900; jazz-infused Sex magazine from 1926; legendary fetish digest Bizarre from 1949; Hugh Hefner's Playboy from 1953; up to hippie-inspired Nude Rebellion from 1967.

In 33 chapters and 676 pages you'll see these and many, many more, accompanied by a fact-filled, informative text sure to give you a new appreciation for the magazines once kept hidden under the mattress.

4 out of 5 stars "Girlie" magazines worldwide 1900-1969 in review.......2007-05-06

Erotica historian Dian Hanson, author of the monumental 6-volume _The History of Men's Magazines_ (also published by Taschen), has produced what amounts to a one-volume summary of that gigantic work in this new book. Even in its "digest" size format, it's still a big chunk of work at nearly 700 pages and several thousand illustrations. It's thoroughly researched and the pictures and accompanying text are first-rate; Hanson, the former editor of one of the leading fetish magazines (Leg Show), plainly knows and loves her topic.

There are two problems, though, which prevent me from giving this book 5 stars, much as I'd like to. The first is the relatively small size of the pages, smaller in fact than a standard hardcover novel; this means many of the pictures have to be reduced in size to fit the pages, which hurts the detail. For a topic as dependent on illustrations as this, you really need the book to have at least letter-size (8 1/2 x 11 inches) or A4 (international letter-size) pages.

The second is that, despite being billed as a review of the girlie magazine from 1900 to 1969, over half the pages are given over to the 1950-1969 period. Admittedly, there is a huge wealth of material from those decades, but I should still have liked to see more material from, for example "La Vie Parisienne", which was the most famous French men's magazine of the late 19th and early 20th century.

The above criticisms notwithstanding, this book is most definitely a must-have for any serious classic-pinup collector, especially those collectors who haven't been fortunate enough to get their hands on Hanson's huge _History of Men's Magazines_ series. Add this to _The Best of American Girlie Magazines_ and _1000 Pinups_, also from the same publisher.

I liked this book a lot. It was very helpful, though it did make a lot of refrences to sex. All in all, I don't regret buying it.

Short, direct and really useful survival guide, and really amusing to read. It's not one of those books with lengthy philosophical essays, or examples of other people's lives. It is well-structured, gets right to the point, and is perfect for us with short attention span

EVERY tip in this book--from what to have in the fridge to how to have sex and make your stomach look flat--was well-written and dead useful. Well worth the price, possibly even worth twice the price! Buy it immediately, and buy copies for all your girlfriends! Enjoy.

Book Description

Nicolette Spicer ("Nick" to her friends) is a tomboy through and through. While her friends focus on shopping and lip gloss, Nick would rather buy new basketball shoes and practice her free throw. But everything changes when she meets a cutie named Ben and decides she has to ditch the jock look if she wants him to notice her. With the biggest party of the school year just ten days away, Nick is in a crunch. But when her best friend Lindsay suggests a magazine-article-inspired makeover, it seems like the perfect solution. But can Nick change her looks and still be herself?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-07-26

Nicolette Spicer, or Nick, has always been a tomboy, and wasn't ashamed of it. She was proud of the way she dressed and carried herself and she was proud at how well she did at basketball. But Nick's feelings about herself begin to change when she literally bumps into Ben, the new guy at school. Who knew he could be so cute up close?

Now Nick begins to crush on Ben, but there seems to be one little problem. It looks like Ben only goes for the types of girls who are completely into the way they look and the latest fashions. Girls like Hannah, who just so happens to also be on the basketball team -- but who is also pretty, Nick's enemy, and definitely the one Ben would go out with. Nick knows nothing about fashion and hasn't really cared about the way she looks, but she's determined to have Ben notice her girly side, and hopefully have him choose her over Hannah.

The only way Nick can accomplish this is to get a makeover, and she needs one quick so she can make her big debut as a girly girl at Hannah's party, which Ben will just so happen to be attending. But will this makeover be totally beneficial in helping Nick to get Ben? Or will it just make her feel even worse about herself?

Words just can't describe how hilarious and entertaining HOW TO BE A GIRLY GIRL IN JUST TEN DAYS was. Lisa Papademetriou shows us that sometimes being yourself is more worth it and definitely less time-consuming than a makeover. This is the perfect quick read for anyone who just wants to sit back and relax.

Book Description

After 9/11, postmodernism and irony were declared dead. Charles Bernstein here proves them alive and well in poems elegiac, defiant, and resilient to the point of approaching song. Heir to the democratic and poetic sensibilities of Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg, Bernstein has always crafted verse that responds to its historical moment, but no previous collection of his poems so specifically addresses the events of its time as Girly Man, which features works written on the evening of September 11, 2001, and in response to the war in Iraq. Here, Bernstein speaks out, combining self-deprecating humor with incisive philosophical and political thinking.

Composed of works of very different forms and moods—etchings from moments of acute crisis, comic excursions, formal excavations, confrontations with the cultural illogics of contemporary political consciousness—the poems work as an ensemble, each part contributing something necessary to an unrealizable and unrepresentable whole. Indeed, representation—and related claims to truth and moral certainty—is an active concern throughout the book. The poems of Girly Man may be oblique, satiric, or elusive, but their sense is emphatic. Indeed, Bernstein’s poetry performs its ideas so that they can be experienced as well as understood.

A passionate defense of contingency, resistance, and multiplicity, Girly Man is a provocative and aesthetically challenging collection of radical verse from one of America’s most controversial poets.

5 out of 5 stars Bernstein for President.......2007-09-20

I have to admit that I feel a bit depressed when reading Girly Man. Why? Because I know it's going to be awhile before I find another book of poetry this good, this funny, this original. Not all the poems work, but the best are far better than what anyone else is producing these days. The rest of this review is intentionally left blank.

5 out of 5 stars Anything can inspire a good poem.......2007-08-22

Charles Bernstein's writing combines a scholar's discipline, an advocate's passion, a theorist's breadth, and a readiness to deflate everything with a good joke. In Girly Man, anything can serve as inspiration for a poem or essay: paintings in an exhibition, highway signs, and even war. Bernstein is among those rare writers who can perform their works effectively, and you can hear recordings of his reading online at Penn Sound and at the Electronic Poetry Center.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamental.......2007-06-10

Bernstein is in top form. The influence of revolutionary poetics is apparent now across the internet, film, television and literature. Bernstein is without a doubt a fundamental contributor to these evolutions, and this book should not be missed.

“Sharp, smart, and on the edge—Girly breaks all of the rules, deliciously.” –Hannah Tinti, author of Animal Crackers

Girly is Elizabeth Merrick’s acclaimed first novel, an epic exploring the realm of women’s spirituality and sexuality through the saga of Hart family that Tom Perrotta calls "an ambitious and moving first novel, an intimate family epic."

Racinda Hart survives her fundamentalist Christian upbringing and the tumult of her wild and dangerous older sister, Ruth. When Ruth disappears, Racinda rejects the Jesus of her rural Pennsylvania childhood to rush headlong into her sexuality and ultimately the exploits of a California rock band. Unmoored, and encountering several captivating adventuresses along the way, Racinda must discover the truth about her mother’s and her grandmother’s lives, as well as her own.

From a goddess who keeps an eye out for Racinda, to Racinda herself, Girly’s seven narrative voices form an intimate, lyrical journey into an irresistible world.

"In Girly, Elizabeth Merrick has rewritten the dictionary on desire of the female kind. A tasty, must-read debut!"--Holiday Reinhorn

Merrick, the editor of the forthcoming Random House anthology THIS IS NOT CHICK LIT, recently explained the genesis of this underground sensation of a novel:

"I wanted to read an epic, thoughtfully-written novel about the undercurrents of spirituality and sexuality I was hearing in Bjork, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Sleater Kinney. That book didn’t exist, I couldn’t find it at the bookstore. So I wrote it."

GIRLY (which I've read twice now after begging off loaning it to friends) is absolutely gorgeous - caustic in it's honesty GIRLY offers characters (each beautifully flawed) so real and human you can't help but ride their roller coasters with them.
Elizabeth Merrick's voice and style mesh ever so intricately with pen and paper - delivering an excellent read.

5 out of 5 stars Coming of Age in Rural Christian America.......2006-03-30

Move over, Holden Caulfield, time for a new era, a new protagonist, and a new voice - Elizabeth Merrick's. Her first novel tells the raw coming-of-age story of Racinda Hart. Riveting and lush detail reveal the novel's distinct multiple narrative voices, disturbing tensions, and family secrets. Merrick's highly original contribution in a literary landscape deluged by girl-meets-boy-equals-fulfillment fodder is revolutionary. Her unsentimental gaze into a disturbing yet very real world is a testiment to both her uncompromising talent and her promise as a novelist.

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the movie!.......2006-03-14

Girly is one ot those rare books that you can't wait to come home to and read. A coming of age story about a young woman, Racinda Hart. This is a book for all of those who felt like the outsider growing up, like the teenager who laughed too loud or wore too much makeup and developed a little too quickly for her own good. Elizabeth Merrick exposes the dark underbelly of what it's like to grow up in evangelical, suburban America. Her honest, gritty punk rock prose gives a real momentum to the story and makes you wish you could hang out on the corner with her characters. Girly is one of those novels that will stay with you long after you have read it. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Brave and Original Work.......2006-01-26

"Girly" is a novel that plunges into areas of female sexuality, relationships and experience that few writers have gone of late. For me, this isn't at all a "dark" novel in that cliched sense of the word that seems to be used whenever fiction attempts to peer deeper and truer into our lives. I recommend Elizabeth Merrick's Girly for its epic stretch and startling originality. It's a story told by seven separate narrative voices and is uncompromising. A book about sisters in an American Christian fundamentalist family, Girly enchants the reader while bringing them raw and scorching moments of truth and vision. I highly recommend this journey into sexuality, family, and the margins of our American life.

    5 out of 5 stars a stunning debut!.......2006-01-26

Reviewed by Abigail Koons for Small Spiral Notebook

Girly, Elizabeth Merrick's first novel, tells the story of the Hart sisters' tumultuous childhood and the relationships that shape their personalities. From their early childhood in Pennsylvania with their aloof, absent Father to their later years in California alone with their Born Again mother, Ruth and Racinda develop amidst the strong presences of their mother Amandine and their grandmother Button. Their identity is as much who they are as who they aren't. After years of emotional pain and instability, Ruth finally leaves home, allowing her younger sister to emerge from her shadow and make her own mistakes. Racinda strives to define who she is in the absence of Ruth's violent, destructive outbursts, but the need to connect with her sister never leaves Racinda. Once she has forged her own path as a minor groupie for a band and later, as a self-admitted patient in a mental hospital, she reaches out to reconnect with the women in her family, discovering the truth of her family and the heartache and pain that forged them.

As this is a book about women, it only seems fair that men dominate the minor characters in Girly, acting as catalysts to the action. Ruth and Racinda's emotionally distance Father, Lyman, creates an absence so acute, that his final abandonment of the family goes unnoticed for days. Joey, his band mates, their grandfather Elmer, Michael -- most of the men in the story remain on the periphery, gently nudging the story in one direction. Rudy, hired to help bring Ruth home, comes on slick and manipulative, but even he is no match for Amandine, the apparent weakest of the Hart women. Racinda's friend Max is a beautifully written character who holds the promise of depth and complexity. Merrick's expert touch to hold back on Max proves her complete control over this novel and her characters. This story wasn't his, although it was interesting to learn, via an interview on Gothamist.com, that the novel grew out of a chapter told from Max's perspective.

Jesus, and religion, also have their fair shares of exposure in Girly. Religion, and the all-consuming faith of Born Again Christians, drive Amandine's actions. She discovers her faith and embraces the community with Racinda while Ruth's erratic behavior becomes worse despite her Mother's faith. At times, Merrick's portrayal of Born Again religion is scathing, but peace is made in the end. Amandine, although still prone to speaking in tongues, finds a place where she can accept both her painful past and her religion at the same time.

This story is about women. Three generations of the Hart family experience their own pain, suffering and growth. Women in every stage of their lives are part of this story, and although there are different personalities, aspects of Racinda, Ruth, Button, and Amandine are in every woman. Even Lisa, Racinda's friend who can be wicked and hurtful, has her own story to tell. Racinda learns what she can from Lisa and assimilates it into her future and her life. Button, one of the strongest women in the novel, is the stabilizing force in both Ruth and Racinda's life. When she slips away from them, they slip away from their world. The link to their past was Button, not their mother, and once the matriarch is gone, Racinda, Ruth and Amandine leave for California and their own time.

In a bid for perfection, this epic novel takes its time with not just the story, but the language as well. This is not a book to pick up when you have a few hours on a plane; it is one to dip in and out of, coming back to it when you can't get Racinda or Ruth off your mind. While there is no perfection in the Hart's world, there is an honest beauty that keeps the reader coming back. This character-driven novel explores the role women play in not just supporting one another, but destroying each other as well. Ruth's violence in Girly is a necessary part of the characters it touches, and as with many good "coming of age" stories, it is a catalyst for growth. Merrick has captured a part of the universal female experience that is rare in modern literature with statements like "...I also think, though I partly know it is not true, there would be a sister, a mother, a father, if I were beautiful." She captures the darker, more painful side of femininity from which beauty and strength grow. With a deeply satisfying ending, Racinda finally grows into the strong woman she was meant to become.

After reading this book, I bought five copies and gave them my sisters and my girl friends (but only my very best ones -- I don't want everybody to know these great secrets!). It has solutions for just about every girly emergency a party girl can think of -- from too much clubbing to what to do to prep for a last minute romantic trip to the beach. The 3 days to a flat tummy section is fabulous, and the hangover prevention and cure section is like gospel among my group! The beauty section is fun -- with lots of secrets hidden in your pantry for shiny hair, soft skin, and white nails. And of course, there are sections on catching and dumping guys which my single friends really use. This is a book you'll always want close at hand -- or maybe in your handbag!

Winter and her sidekick Otra continue to dedicate their lives finding adventure, wherever it may be. 5 out of 5 stars Wacky beyond belief...but still awesome.......2007-08-02

Out of the myriad of webcomics I frequent, Girly is one of the few worth buying. Josh's art style is both fun and unique, and his stories range from witty and silly to downright insanity. He manages to cram lots of crazy pop culture references into his comic, along with his trademark characters we have come to love. This volume is no different from what we've come to love in Girly. The book itself is, as you might expect, the second part of Girly, with some little extras thrown in. If you're a fan, buy this book, and if you aren't, go read some Girly, then buy this book. I have mine right here, and it was without a doubt a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Girly stands up to many readings.......2007-07-14

I enjoy quite a few web comics, but only the best are worth getting in book form. Josh has been honing his art, style, and sense of timing for years, but still retains the zany, unpredictable twists and turns that characterize the best of his early work. He makes you care about the characters without becoming sentimental, gives these characters depth without becoming ponderous, and most importantly of all, keeps me laughing through the second and third readings. Oh and the forth through twentieth readings too. For those unfamiliar with Girly, go to the web site to read the first several chapters. Then buy this book.

...and so is his artwork. Although I've only really read his comics online (http://go-girly.com/), I went through everything of his I could find the minute I discovered it. Reminiscent of such genius as Tex Avery, Lesnick has a style built from classic comic art and modern pop-culture humor. His characters are hilarious and endearing, and everything comes across with a slight insanity that reminds me John K. after eating too much over-sugared breakfast cereal. But be careful: like sugar, Josh Lesnick's work is addictive and his hiatus may leave you in a state of withdrawl. Hence the need for printed copies of his artwork - so you can get your fix whenever you need it.

        Book Description

Care for a cocktail? Perhaps the traditional Manhattan, or maybe you're more of a Sex and the City girl with a Cosmo in hand? There are some little known drinks in this collection, too, like the Russian Huntress, guaranteed to bring out the wild woman in all who imbibe. And, because we care, some non-alcoholic libations as well.
