Book Description
This volume emphasizes an aspect of children's picture books that has not yet been thoroughly investigated: structure. Both concept books and picture storybooks employ very distinctive structures that, once mastered, can be applied to any picture book you wish to write. When so many of the best picture books employ the same structures, it is important to analyze these structures, understand why they work, and learn how to incorporate them into your own writing. This volume helps you do all that. You will see that no matter how carefully you labor over the tone, word choice, plot, character, setting, theme and style of your picture book, you must have a thorough grasp of its structure if you wish your book to succeed. Indeed, you will find that an expert command of structure is the key to writing a successful children's picture book.

Very helpful.......2007-10-07
I have at least a dozen books on writing for children and I especially like this one. Not only does it focus exclusively on picture books, which few others do, it provides solid, concrete information that you can apply directly to your own writing. Too many other books offer vague tips that may be helpful in polishing an existing manuscript, but don't help with building your story from the ground up. I've been trying (sporadically) to sell picture book manuscripts for several years now, and I believe that what I've learned from this book will help get me closer to my goal of being a published author. Volumes II and III are on their way to me now and I can't wait to see what they have to offer!
How to write a Children's Picture Book.......2007-03-22
The book takes popular children's book and breaks apart the beginning, middle and ending so that you get a very clear picture of how your story should progess. An excellent resource.
A Constant Companion.......2007-01-02
Eve Heidi Bine-Stock's HOW TO WRITE A CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK (VOLUMES I, II and III)is a constant companion and rich resource in the planning and revision of picture books. The deconstruction of picture books, and the detailed classification of crucial characteristics - using classic picture books to illustrate each detailed point - make these books invaluable. Although I particularly use Volume I and II in the planning stage of a new manuscript, all three volumes are again by my side during each revision, and each step of each revision. There is no question in my mind that these books are the biggest resource in pushing my writing to the next level. The volumes are not read-once-and-put-aside books; they are books you will want on your writing desk for constant reference.
Practical, Easy-to-use.......2004-11-11
As an author of many books for children, I found this book to be one of the most practical and helpful tools to format a picture book during the writing process. I'm already using the techniques to structure new projects to make my picture book manuscripts shine! I plan on recommending it to my critique group as well as buying copies as gifts for my writer friends.
A "must-have" for any aspiring children's picturebook writer.......2004-06-07
How To Write A Children's Picture Book focuses especially upon structure as the key to creating a memorable and entertaining treasure for children to read, share, and learn from. Distinguishing between picturebooks and picture storybooks, and closely examining such enduring children's classics as "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Where The Wild Things Are", How To Write A Children's Picture Book is a highly useful and focused guide that dissects the nuts and bolts of writing with a keen eye toward higher achievement and quality. A "must-have" for any aspiring children's picturebook writer.

Customer Reviews:
A real gem.......2004-09-02
Tom Stoppard is arguably one of the greatest playwrights of all time (and I do say arguably), and this collection only proves it. I am currently away at college while I write this review, and have pitifully forgotten my battered, dog-eared copy of this book at home, and so I'm pining away because it really is such a staple in my life - I cannot count the amount of times I've pulled out the book and read "The Real Thing", but I'm nearly sure it runs toward the hundred mark. All the plays are exceptional, although the aforementioned "The Real Thing" stands out, along with "Aracadia" and the wonderfully underrated "Indian Ink."
A Master Playwright.......2002-08-30
Every time I pick up this collection, I find myself sitting and reading for hours. Something about Stoppard's command of the language, his own personal calling card, is undeniably riveting.
And though there are times (especially in Day & Night) where it seems that characters are too clever for their own good, his sense of timing and his love for delivering a smart, believable group of people amazes me.
This collection is wonderful in its scope, including everything from the frequently produced "Hapgood" to the more recent treasure "Indian Ink." It's a must-have.
A Fantastic Collection.......2001-09-28
This is a great collection of Tom Stoppard plays, and includes some of his best works.
Arcadia is one of Stoppard's greatest plays - a bizarre combination of physics, mathematics, poetry, a good old-fashioned academic stoush and romance (or lust) to boot. A fantastic play to see, but very good to read also.
The Real Thing, Hapgood and Indian Ink are also among Stoppard's more mature and better plays, and nicely round out this collection. These are some of Stoppard's better known plays (and you can read reviews of them on their own pages) but I'll just summarise by saying that I think they are fantastic.
Night and Day is an earlier Stoppard play and maybe not quite as good - it is concerned with journalism in war-torn Africa and does take a deep look at issues faced by a journalist in that situation. However, in comparison to the other plays in this volume, it just doesn't seem quite as good - however it is still a fine play in its own right and does make for interesting reading nonetheless.
Overall, I definitely reccomend this volume, particularly since it's cheaper than buying each of the plays individually.
A magnificent collection.......2000-12-21
After seeing Stoppard's "The Real Thing" in London, I was blown away. I purchased this collection to have "The Real Thing," and was blown away but all 5 of Stoppard's masterpieces. He writes convincingly of love, redemption and what it means to exist and to live. I cannot recommend this collection (or anything by Stoppard) enough.
Book Description
Presenting the initial Courtney Crumrin miniseries in a new digest-sized format. Courtney's parents have dragged her out to a high-to-do suburb to live with her creepy Great Uncle Aloysius in his spooky old house. She's not only the new kid in school, but she also discovers strange things lurking under her bed.
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
I didn't think I would like this till more than one person mentioned it was pretty decent. While aimed at kids, it has enough to interest the older reader.
Courtney and family move in with a wealthy and quite odd uncle. It is only the kid that finds out what is really strange about the town, the places surrounding it, and what her other relative really gets up to.
She gets in over her heard more than once.
great art, fun writing.......2007-06-21
I'd put it in the same category as "Bone" and "Sparks: An Urban Fairytale", for fun story-telling, great art, strong female protagonists, and sly humor. Also recommended for anyone who liked "Thief of Time" or "Something Wicked This Way Comes" as a kid.
+++.......2007-05-19
Ted Naifehs work always keeps my intrest. This series is no exception. Its not quite as drastic as his other work but a cute book regardless.
Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things.......2006-11-11
The only "good thing" was Courtney on the front cover. We have been creating books, graphic novels, and paintings for over two decades and more. The way Courtney was dawn on the cover, she looked neat. The rest, however, was extremely disappointing
Great.......2006-03-13
Courtney Crumrin can be compared to Harry Potter, but it's not really the same thing. Read this if your into the more gothic parts of magic and also have a sense of humor. The only thing I want to complain about is that the book is too short - I read it from cover to cover and immediately wanted to read the next book.

Customer Reviews:
A Little on the Weird Side.......2006-02-05
I have read several of Echo Bodine's books and I think she is a brilliant and gifted writer and psychic. My primary issue with this book was that some of the letters were really out there and sound like they were written by people who were 1. Looking for attention and made up the goofiest story they could manage in order to get in the book or, 2. They may need to see someone regarding a medication adjustment. I am a believer in Echo's gifts and in the presence of spirits, so my issue isn't that. Just some of the things people asked about or claimed to experience seemed WAY out there and very difficult for me to believe. As a result, I spent a large portion of the time I was reading this thinking to myself "Yeah, RIGHT" or some similar mental reply. Needless to say, that detracted from the book.
Interesting.. .......2005-10-30
Wow! I read this book in a day and I am pretty impressed. Everything that Echo talks about all seems to make sense. All my questions or thoughts that I might of had about ghosts and spirits were answered.
Excellent Ghost Guide!.......2005-06-27
I have now read everything this author has written, and she never ceases to amaze me with her great writing style & genuine care to provide lay-persons with the info. they seek. Whether it's about intuition, the soul, psychic development, or ghosts, you can find what you need in Echo's books.
This particular book, "Dear Echo", contains EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about ghosts. Have you ever wondered if a ghost can hurt you, or why there are any ghosts out there to begin with? You'll find the answer here. Or, have you ever wondered how you can "get rid of" a unwanted otherworldly guest? Echo provides specific steps to do just that.
If you are at all interested in the subject of ghosts, even if you're "scared to death" of them (or especially so if that's the case), then this is the book for you. It's easy to read & filled to the brim with great information - you can't go wrong with this one!
Sincere Replies, Sound Advice.......2002-11-14
Echo Bodine's style of writing is comfortable, as if you were sitting across the room from her, sharing a cup of hot chocolate, and just conversing. This easy to read book of letters comes across as sincere and offers practical information and advice on every topic I can think of as it applies to ghosts.

Dare to scare your younger Scouts..........2007-10-03
Should you need to pick between the available Scout campfire story books instead of buying them all, don't leave Dr. William Forgey's "CAMPFIRE STORIES: Things that Go Bump in the Night" off of your list.
"Stories to be good have to be credible" is the advice Forgey gives, and it's the credibility factor that sets this collection apart. These tales sound so real your audience may not see them as fiction. Youths 11 to 15 years old, (the suggested age group) will believe them up to a point, and they will like them. Properly told, even an adult audience should find some meat this anthology. Although the book is marketed to Scout leaders in particular, these are not "Scout" stories for the most part. Your non-Scout youth group will like them.
Besides the original stories created by the author, CAMPFIRE STORIES includes Forgey's masterful adaptations of uncommon vintage ghost stories penned by others, and even offers a true tale, "Death of an Old Lion" as told by Ernest Thompson Seton. Even a story by Mark Twain comes included. All of these stories are highly memorable, with entertaining, suspenseful plots. In "The Valley of the Blue Mist," Forgey shares his version of this old story, which is found elsewhere under other names, but his is the best version I've yet seen.
Only two of the stories out of the twenty were a disappointment: "La Cucaracha Mine," a pointless, plotless hole, and "The Indian Chief's Wait," which you will soon figure out is that familiar joke story, "Falling Rocks" in a poorly disguised form. The 5 stars are for the other eighteen "must-have" stories.
At least the storytelling advice given in this book is practical and useful. Forgey includes a sequentially-numbered plot outline at the conclusion of each story, which I don't find necessary, but I'm certain many will find these most helpful. This book is a bargain!
-Byron C. Justice, author of
Haunted Camps
and Violent Night
What camp did you go to........2003-07-08
I dont think the author of this book every sat at a campfire, let alone told a scary story. The 7 and 10 year olds at our campfire got up and walked away and the adults just moaned. Nothing but goody two shoes morals for endings and no suspence. Make up your own stories instead of purchasing this book.
Great resource for telling stories.......1999-08-15
This is an easy book to tell stories from. There is a good section at the begining of the book, giving tips on how to tell stories At the end of each story, there is a review of the story in point form so you don't have to read them to your audience. You can actually "tell" them the story. The stories are adaptable to many settings and I have used many of them around different campfires for youth aged 5 to 18. The stories also have endings that will not have younger youth having nightmares and having "accidents" in their sleeping bags. I highly recommend it for any story teller, scouter, guide leader etc.
