Book Description
Named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most important innovators of the century, Tariq Ramadan is a leading Muslim scholar, with a large following especially among young European and American Muslims. Now, in his first book written for a wide audience, he offers a marvelous biography of the Prophet Muhammad, one that highlights the spiritual and ethical teachings of one of the most influential figures in human history. Here is a fresh and perceptive look at Muhammad, capturing a life that was often eventful, gripping, and highly charged. Ramadan provides both an intimate portrait of a man who was shy, kind, but determined, as well as a dramatic chronicle of a leader who launched a great religion and inspired a vast empire. More important, Ramadan presents the main events of the Prophet's life in a way that highlights his spiritual and ethical teachings. The book underscores the significance of the Prophet's example for some of today's most controversial issues, such as the treatment of the poor, the role of women, Islamic criminal punishments, war, racism, and relations with other religions. Selecting those facts and stories from which we can draw a profound and vivid spiritual picture, the author asks how can the Prophet's life remain--or become again--an example, a model, and an inspiration? And how can Muslims move from formalism--a fixation on ritual--toward a committed spiritual and social presence? In this thoughtful and engaging biography, Ramadan offers Muslims a new understanding of Muhammad's life and he introduces non-Muslims not just to the story of the Prophet, but to the spiritual and ethical riches of Islam.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting book about the prophet.......2007-10-01
This book was great to show details about the prophet Mohammad's life. Tariq Ramadan captured in his very well researched book an unkown side of a great man. Unfortunately at some points he writes somewhat differential between sunni and shia, not realizing that at the prophet's time there was no such distinction.
Tariq is a true Muslim.......2007-06-07
this is a must read for all Muslims, curious non-Muslims and Islam-haters alike.
Tariq provides a beautiful meditation on the life of the Prophet, quoting great ayats from the Qur'an and hadith. IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE PROPHET is an easily-digestable yet profound work of truth. This book provides all who read it with the essence of Islam and the life of the Prophet.
Islamist Apologist.......2007-04-24
An Islamist apologist through-and-through. While couching the traditional Islamic double-speak in PC terms appealing to many in the West, distorts the true history of Muhammad's actions and words, as well as the real method by which Islam spread which was by the sword and not by persuasion.
His condemnation of intentional attacks on civilians is tempered by an innocuous-seeming suggestion: that they will cease when European, U.S., and Israeli foreign policies bend to terrorists' underlying demands.
There is nothing of worth here or in any similar work which seeks to justify Islamist aspirations and methods, while ignoring the real problem which is the reformation of Islam, necessary in order to allow it to live in peace with other beliefs and customs.
better than Jesus.......2007-04-16
In the West Jesus is held up as a model. But his teachings can be used only in a period just before the end of the world; he expected the end to come soon. You cannot practice his teachings in a world that will last; they are not practical. Mohammed, unlike Jesus, was a normal man; he had normal feelings, not the sado-masochistic feelings of Jesus which he got from the whole Judaic messianic complex. Mohammed is someone who can admire, can emulate, can respect.
I am not a Muslim but I think Ramadan has shown Mohammed to be a better guide than Jesus.
Great Read, whatever your personal belief.......2007-04-06
This biography of Prophet Muhammad can be called a "spiritual biography" that tells the story of a life but emphasizes decisions, revelations, and the spiritual and emotional lessons therein. Emerick's biography of the Prophet and that by Karen Armstrong are good, this is better. Incidentally, it hints at the paranoia of those in government who cancelled the author's visa while he was en route to teach at Notre Dame University. (I taught there briefly and can assure you that it is not a hot bed of radicalism.)
The position of women, place of jihad, role of law, and relations with non-Muslims are totally different than the media caricatures and also different from some Fundamentalist politicization and corruptions.
Under duress and attack we see un Islamic practices claiming to be Fundamental (the Western media is more than happy to second that claim). One needs to know that the Shari'a is partly a product, close to two centuries later, that evolved to empower scholarly elite promoting its own interests by which time patriarchal elements had also degraded practice regarding women some - although women had right of inheritance not much available in the West until the 19th and 20th centuries except for royalty.. Also, the most infamous practices predated Islam in much of the Mediterranean - the stoning of adulterers was now much harder to prove that before.
It is reading for those who have an open mind and would learn more, for those who aren't quite sure what to believe after the pervasive toxic climate of criticism. Christians and Jews are very much at a disadvantage in that Muslims know far more about their faiths naturally from reading the Qur'an than they would know without significant effort. Moses, Noah, Jesus and Mary are Prophets of Islam (Mary appears in the Qur'an more times than the Bible).
It should be reading for the many shamefully ignorant critics like Robertson, Graham, Hagee, Falwell who do not have the least basis for their declarations. Their ignorance is itself a measure of disrespect and narrowness that spreads widely among their followers. Equally it could begin to educate those who should know better and who make decisions based on fear and hate - including those who seem superficially have some knowledge when talking about "abrogation" of versus in the Qu'ran etc. Bashing Islam is a profitable cottage industry and so much easier than a small measure of understanding or empathy.
Prophet Muhammad lived ihsan (beauty appreciated and demonstrated) with charisma even before the first revelation. His role is not like that of Jesus in important ways: neither he nor his followers claimed Divinity: he had immense practical worldly family and political responsibilities that Jesus never had; he provided no redemption or way of evading personal responsibility.

Brilliant Scholarship.......2007-05-14
Arnold Fruchtenbaum is one of the best scholars of Judeo-Christian Scripture I've found. His books should be among the foundational works for evangelical Christian thinking. Jewish readers would also gain insights into Christianity and historic Judaism by reading his works.
Book of Revelation is Finally Crystal Clear!.......2007-05-02
This is a WONDERFUL verse by verse explanation of the Book of Revelation! Most people don't realize what a truly Jewish book the book of Revelation is, it is only hard to understand IF you don't understand the OT. Dr. Fruchtenbaum is a Messianic Jew and the BEST teacher to explain the Scriptures from a Jewish perspective. What other perspective SHOULD there be? Jesus was a Jew, lived and taught the Jews, etc. So a Jewish perspective to one's Bible study is imperative if one is to understand the Bible - and ESPECIALLY Revelation.
Footsteps of the Messiah makes Revelation and end times Scripture clear and understandable in every day language. Dr. Fruchtenbaum thinks of everything.........so he included in the back of the book a Scripture Index, so you can look up ANY other Scripture and go directly to the page on which he talks about it!!!!
The Footsteps of the Messiah.......2007-04-08
Fantastic! Best book I've ever read that clearly states the prophecies from Biblical scriptures and clarifies prophecies of the "end times".
Especially appreciate the updates in the revised copy.
The Footsteps of the Messiah........2007-01-11
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone wanting to understand the Bible more thoroughly and future events. It was a very good book due to it answering many questions I had involving Bible texts. The book really gave me the incentive to re-read the Bible having the knowledge that different scripture relates to different time periods in the future.
Best Chronological Study of End Time Events.......2006-07-14
If you want to study the Biblical prophecy of end time events, as they happen in chronological order, then Footsteps is the book to read. In fact, it is the book to read anyway. Dr. Fruchtenbaum is the most authoritative author you will find. I have heard him speak on several occasions, and his thinking is coherent and compelling. He presents all the facts, discusses all opposing points of view, and presents facts to approve and disprove those points of view.

Book Description
For nearly two decades Western governments and a growing activist community have been frustrated in their attempts to bring about a freer and more democratic Burma—through sanctions and tourist boycotts—only to see an apparent slide toward even harsher dictatorship. But what do we really know about Burma and its history? And what can Burma’s past tell us about the present and even its future?
In The River of Lost Footsteps, Thant Myint-U tells the story of modern Burma, in part through a telling of his own family’s history, in an interwoven narrative that is by turns lyrical, dramatic, and appalling. His maternal grandfather, U Thant, rose from being the schoolmaster of a small town in the Irrawaddy Delta to become the UN secretary-general in the 1960s. And on his father’s side, the author is descended from a long line of courtiers who served at Burma’s Court of Ava for nearly two centuries. Through their stories and others, he portrays Burma’s rise and decline in the modern world, from the time of Portuguese pirates and renegade Mughal princes through the decades of British colonialism, the devastation of World War II, and a sixty-year civil war that continues today and is the longest-running war anywhere in the world.
The River of Lost Footsteps is a work both personal and global, a distinctive contribution that makes Burma accessible and enthralling.
Customer Reviews:
A brilliant eye opener.......2007-07-25
The message of this book is that there is much more to Burma(Myanmar) than one reads in the newspapers, there is more than the military dictatorship and the cause of 'human rights'. The message is that there is much we can learn about Burma from her history and that the present state of siege is one that ignores her illustrious and rich past.
The past is indeed illustrious. It is made up of Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. Of a number of terrifying wars against England and colonialism. It is made up of powerful kings and rebels and Mughals and Portuguese pirates and Armenian businessman. It is about an exotic kingdom long connected with the world but also partially cut off from it, one that became Buddhist early on and has fought many wars against China and Thailand.
The author is the son of a famous Burmese family whose fortunes included being head of the U.N. and he has an intimate knowledge of not only the history but also the culture, clothing, architecture, smells and whereabouts of the subject he discusses. He weaves himself into the story as well, describing visits to ruined cities and an experience as a young man going to Thailand to protest for Democracy in his homeland.
A very important account and one of the few modern histories of Burma written in the last twenty years, it adds a great deal to an understanding of current Burmese politics and why many have been wrong to judge her for her actions without learning anything about her.
Seth J. Frantzman
A Comprehensive Look At Burma's Situation.......2007-07-08
We Americans tend to forget or ignore the fact that there are deep seeded historical reasons why governments in other countries take certain positions that seem to be inappropriate. Such is the case with Burma, and the xenophobic, anti-democratic actions of its military government. Fortunately, Thant Myint-U has provided a basis for understanding the situation in Burma through his wonderful book, The River of Lost Footsteps.
Thant shows that Burma's current state is mostly the result of its very long history of negative interactions with other countries. He discusses how occupations by the Chinese, British, Japanese, and others have led to a mistrust of foreigners. This mistrust has morphed into a sense of nationalistic self-reliance, in part from several examples (augmented by nostalgia) where a strong Burmese leader has successfully led the country. Thant then discusses how the radical changes that have occurred in Burma over the last 150 years have left the country without a governing class capable of managing it. Given these factors, it's no surprise that the one governmental unit with strong structure, the military, is running the country.
Considering all the care that Thant took to show how Burma came to its current state of affairs, it was a little disappointing to see that he rushed through his conclusions. Beyond saying that the existing international response of economic sanctions won't work, he provides little in the way of possible answers as to how Burma can be integrated into the international community. That response comes across as a little too vague and diplomatic for someone who clearly understands the reasons behind Burma's present circumstances. Still, The River of Lost Footsteps is an important starting point for persons interested in comprehending Burma's situation and developing a policy for addressing its position.
Obligatory read for anyone interested in Burma politics.......2007-05-09
Thant Myint-U tells the story of how Burma became the "poisoned Shangri-la", possibly the second weirdest country after North Korea. At first sight, Burma is a battle between the evil dictature and Aung San Suu Kyi. But Thant Myint-U gives us an infinitely more complicated picture, from thousands of years ago until the present day, with a civil was that has lasted for 60 years. The state-building suffered severely both when the british conquered Burma in 1885, as well as they were thrown out in 1948. But the book is more than just a story lesson. He has a clear message: Boycott is perhaps an easy answer to what to do with the country. Too easy. The dictature is extremely xenophobic, and avoids any influence from outside the country. They would not mind any boycott. Instead one should delicately try to interact more with the country. Thant Myint-U gives no easy fix, but a very sober and well-written overview. I have one minor remark: The map provided in the book should be more informative, many places mentioned in the text are not included.
Must have for anyone interested in modern burma.......2007-03-04
Best writing on modern Burmese politics yet to appear, should be read by all the ostriches with their heads in the sand who believe that sanctions, boycotts, embargoes and the like will have any effect on the junta.
Sanctions that target an entire country, rather than its leaders, are at best ignorantly undertaken and ultimately unethical.
Good read for beginners on Burma.......2007-01-27
This is a great introduction to Burma and its history. It is well written, clear, and sometimes funny. Furthermore, it is not too detailed for novices.
The author's main point is a good one. Discussion of Burma tends to be largely ahistorical. Few consider Burma's history when deciding policy. I wouldn't exactly consider US senators to have this level of sophistication, but it seems that somebody should, especially lobbyists. Through history, the author shows Burma as having been often isolated and torn, with little institutional capacity to govern after the British took over.
I thought the last few pages were a bit glib and not well argued. I disagree with current US policy of isolation, but the author loses his depth of understanding and seems to label the Burma lobby in the same brush as the government of Burma. The truth is, sanctions probably have relatively little effect on Burma. If the author has shown anything, it is the extent to which Burma's government isolates itself from international norms and pressure. While perhaps more aid money and business would go into the country without sanctions, much of it would not go in anyway because of the government's pervasive mismanagement and corruption (Global Fund pulled out because of misuse of its funds; Red Cross was recently expelled).
Despite these last few pages, the book is overall a great read for novices and long-time Burma watchers.

Book Description
Drawn from original sources, Old Path White Clouds is the beautiful classic recounting of the life and teachings of Gautama Buddha over the course of eighty years. It is retold alternately through the eyes of Svasti, the buffalo boy who provided kusa grass for the Buddha's enlightenment cushion, and the Buddha himself.
Customer Reviews:
A Life of the Buddha.......2007-06-02
This is a wonderfully readable, yet reliable and informative story of the life and teachings of the Buddha.
Buddha's Life.......2007-03-16
The life of Buddha and his teachings are intervowen splendidly in this wonderful book. The author manages to convey much using a very plain and simple style of writing. One also gets a sense of the subtle social and institutional changes that Buddhism underwent during Buddha's life time. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to learn about Buddha and Buddhism.
A beginning point.......2006-11-05
This book is written with great love and understanding of the Buddha with compassion for the reader. It presents a beginning point for understanding Buddha's path to enlightenment and his teaching mission in life. The book represents a much better account than other books on the subject of the teachings and how to approach the fundamental understanding of the message being conveyed. Both my wife and I found this book an excellent source to actually document the step by step progression of the Buddha during his entire life. The book also provides an understanding of why and how the base of the disciples grew so quickly. The book provides perspective and is offered in plain and understandable terms. It should be read in sips and not gulps. Time should be spent in contemplation, because the depth of expression requires personal reflection. Unlike Karen Armstrong's history of the Buddha, this book in a primer for the understanding of what enlightenment means to the Buddhist. Once you "get it" you will have a beginning point to explore the more complex depths that the book presents. Red Pine's books on the diamond sutra and heart sutra provide significantly more depth for delving into the actual mental process of establishing meaning beyond the definition.
With that said, this is the most complete account of the life and teachings of the Buddha I have read. It is written from a perspective of love and compassion. It does not glorify the Buddha but simply states the things that were and are the teachings and life of Buddha. The message is for you to begin your own reflections and arrive at a better personal understanding of what is real and what is not real. The book helped firm up my perspective on the Buddha's teaching. The book represented an excellent beginning point to pull together my understanding of the Buddha before becoming confused by the complexities of the detail Sutra's and sermons. One thing that is derived, practice is a constant even for the Buddha over many lifetimes.
Heart Warming.......2006-07-05
This book rates well alongside Arnold's 'Light of Asia'. It tells a more complete story of the Buddha's life and achievements, and clarifies some points about the teachings. With the companion book, 'The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching' the student and the adept both can gain valuable insight into The Buddha and His life. Well worth reading.
Why didn't I read this sooner?.......2005-09-08
A couple of years ago on retreat I asked a nun from Plum Village what her favorite Thich Nhat Hahn title would be. She named this hefty tome which I purchased but did not read for quite awhile, assuming that it would be tedious and difficult going. (I have no idea why, none of Thay's books are anything but lovely and engaging...) What a wonderful surprise I received as I started reading vignette after vignette from the Buddha's life. In breathtakingly beautiful prose, Thay brings this great historical figure to life in a way that just makes you wish you had been there. The stories also explain and illustrate some of the more esoteric teachings in ways that are simple and easy to grasp, especially for those of us not raised in this tradition. Don't be put off by the size of the book as I was. Keep it on your bedstand and read a few stories a night. You'll be sorry when you are done!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
During Mobutu Sese Seko's 30 years as president of Zaire (now the Congo), he managed to plunder his nation's economy and live a life of excess unparalleled in modern history. A foreign correspondent in Zaire for six years, Michela Wrong has plenty of titillating stories to tell about Mobutu's excesses, such as the Versailles-like palace he built in the jungle, or his insistence that he needed $10 million a month to live on. However, these are not the stories that most interest Wrong. Her aim is to understand all of the reasons behind the economic disintegration of the most mineral-rich country on the African continent; in so doing, she turns over the mammoth rock that was Mobutu and finds a seething underworld of parasites with names like the CIA, the World Bank and the IMF, the French and Belgian governments, mercenaries, and a host of fat cats who benefited from Mobutu's largesse and even exceeded his rapaciousness.
Wrong turns first to Belgian's King Leopold II, who instituted a brutal colonial regime in the Congo in order to extract the natural and mineral wealth for his personal gain. Mobutu, with the aid of a U.S. government determined to sabotage Soviet expansion, stepped easily into Leopold's footsteps, continuing a culture built on government-sanctioned sleaze and theft. Under the circumstances, it's hard not to feel some sympathy for the people who survived in the only ways they could--teachers trading passing grades for groceries, hospitals refusing to let patients leave until they paid up, cassava patches cultivated next to the frighteningly unsafe nuclear reactor. What is less comprehensible--and rightly due for an airing--are Wrong's revelations about foreign interventions. Why, for example, did the World Bank and IMF give Mobutu $9.3 billion in aid, knowing full well that he was pocketing most of it?
In the Footsteps of Mr. Kurtz is a brilliantly conceived and written work, sharply observant and richly described with a necessary sense of the absurd. Wrong paints a far more nuanced picture of the wily autocrat than we've seen before, and of the blatant greed and paranoia of the many players involved in the country's self-destruction. --Lesley Reed
Book Description
Known as "the Leopard," the president of Zaire for thirty-two years, Mobutu Sese Seko, showed all the cunning of his namesake -- seducing Western powers, buying up the opposition, and dominating his people with a devastating combination of brutality and charm. While the population was pauperized, he plundered the country's copper and diamond resources, downing pink champagne in his jungle palace like some modern-day reincarnation of Joseph Conrad's crazed station manager.
Michela Wrong, a correspondent who witnessed Mobutu's last days, traces the rise and fall of the idealistic young journalist who became the stereotype of an African despot. Engrossing, highly readable, and as funny as it is tragic, In the Footsteps of Mr. Kurtz assesses the acts of the villains and the heroes in this fascinating story of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Customer Reviews:
A great description of Zaire under Mobutu but poor investigative reporting.......2007-07-16
Few nations have had as sad a history as Zaire, currently known as the Congo. Michela Wrong, a journalist for the New Statesman, has taken the time to write a book about the Congo's history particularly under Mobutu, and her experiences in the Congo during his kleptocratic rule.
Her stories are well-researched, and it's clear she's talked with many of those who influenced the history of the time. The sterile recounting of Congo's continuous deterioriation under Mobutu is quite well done. What I found infuriating about this book is that Wrong never seems to ask why things happened, or were allowed to happen.
When Zaire, for instance, became independent, it boasted all of 17 university graduates in a country the size of Western Europe, and years of Belgian investment. Surely the Belgians, who left, realized that the country would be dependent on Western knowhow for many years. Why did they not leave advisers behind, perhaps advisers with a brief to make the president offers he couldn't refuse, as happened in other francophone colonies? One of the cataclysms under Mobutu's rule was his expelling of many non-Zairians, who left their capital behind, but not their connections and understanding of their business. The economy duly crashed. Why did neither the Belgians nor the French nor the Americans dissuade him from a policy that all but destroyed Zaire's prosperity? One reason why the above mentioned powers were loath to antagonize Mobutu were the many services he performed for them during the Cold War. Why does Wrong only allude to them, and not mention them? One could continue in this vein, but I felt as if what could have become a fascinating book focusing on the crunch times when astoundingly disastrous decisions were made, instead focuses on the misery that these ill-begotten decisions wreaked, which is not as nearly interesting.
If you need to need a source for academic work on Zaire under Mobutu, you may enjoy this book, but I wouldn't recommend it as pleasure reading.
A good introduction but nothing more..........2006-12-03
`In the Footsteps of Mr Kurtz' is a nice introduction to the intriguing life and times of infamous dictator Mobutu, from his rise to power to his less than glorious downfall. I advise it to anyone who is unfamiliar with Zaire-Congo. Very good reading is her account of the final collapse of the Zairian army. This book was originally conceived as a radio-program on BBC. It is however just that: an introduction. The author is so kind to refer to further reading in the last pages of the book. There the interested reader can find very good resources on the history of the Belgian Congo.
Michela Wrong does suffer from some prejudice towards Belgium and the Belgians not uncommon in the UK. Apart from King Leopold II, the role of the Belgian monarchy and the Belgian governments, especially while supporting the brutal Mobutu dictatorship is hardly present and when mentioned it is downplayed. Not a word on the part that King Baudouin and Prime Minister Gaston Eyskens played in 1959-1960, especially concerning the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. I strongly suggest The Assassination of Lumumba by Belgian journalist Ludo De Witte for a good background on that period.
The author points out that it took an American historian to dig up the facts about King Leopold II's barbarity. While the author is absolutely right in pointing out that Belgium has still not come to terms with its own colonial past, and while King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild is a must read, it is NOT the first published account of that period. That honour goes to the Belgian former diplomat Jules Marchal. But even so, in 1985 he still had to use the pseudonym of A. M. Delathuy and go to the small leftwing publisher EPO (Education Prolétarienne - Proletarische Opvoeding) to get the first ever book published of a ruthless campaign that would nowadays be labelled as genocide. All big Belgian, French and Dutch publishers flatly refused it. Unfortunately this book is only available in Dutch and French, not in English.
Michela Wrong does give credit to this book, stating that it is only available in French (and Flemish if you can read it) ...Two small remarks here, there is no such thing as a Flemish language. I know that even recently a quality newspaper like The Guardian still claims that `the Flemish Belgians speak Flemish, a language related to Dutch'. The author does not have to take my word for it, she can go check any library and ask for an Flemish-English dictionary, there is no such thing. She can also come check the curriculum in any Flemish school, where she will find that students learn mathematics, geography and `Dutch' at school. While her apparently not so well informed ears may find it odd to hear that the Flemish speak Dutch while not being Dutch, maybe it will help to point out that also the Austrians speak German, that the Brazilians speak Portuguese etc ... Do the Flemish have a different accent than the Dutch? Yes; certainly, but so do Texans, Jamaicans, Australians, yet they all speak English. I also do not understand why Michela Wrong finds it necessary to give a demeaning remark ... if you can read it ... Dutch is the native language of 16 million Dutch and 6 million Flemish, that is more than all Scandinavian languages combined. Another detail that reveals her prejudice towards Belgians and Flemish is that the only Belgian politician she mentions by name is Leo Tindemans who she misspells with a typical `German' double `nn'. Of all Belgian Prime Ministers that ever played a role in Zaire-Congo, he was the least active on Zaire. Every Belgian knows about Tindemans' personal distaste for Mobutu (the feeling was mutual).
A good introduction to Mobutu indeed, a translation into French and Dutch (I can read it!) is more than welcome.
Lode Vanoost (Belgian native Dutch speaker, 7 years old in 1960, no strings attached to Congo), Brussels, 26 November 2006
Well written,fascinating.......2006-11-10
An excellent look at what has brouoght the DRC to where it is today, extremely readable.
Somewhat interesting, but poorly written.......2006-07-17
A number of the reviewers sum this up quite adequately. The is not at all scholarly and is a jumbled mess of vignettes. I give it 3 because there are so few books written on the subject and because she tried to be balanced in her reporting. This seems to be a very long winded news article with little depth and real insight. Just a mass of reporting on insignificant experiences she encountered rather than a serious recount of the history. Dissappointed and trying to slog through for any nuggets of insight. Even the brief recount of Congo/Belgium in "The Scramble for Africa" was a much better treatment of the subject, albeit solely focused on Belium's colonial period.
not as good as King Leopold's ghost, but still worth the read..........2006-01-03
After reading King Leopold's Ghost, I was looking for a good synopsis of what happened in the post-colonial era. After a few weeks of searching, I settled on In the Footsteps of Mr. Kurtz. Both were fascinating books that give great insight on the problems with the Congo. Both are written in a style that is highly readable, entrhalling and at the same time informative.

Such enterprises achieve organizational excellence and lasting market dominance, and their leaders are envied, copied, and avidly followed by many. This book offers you the opportunity to walk with these giants, learn their secrets, delve into their minds, and experience these five arts as they do.

a valuable resource.......2007-08-19
Simply put this book is outstanding. I have given two copies to direct reports and would not hesitate to recommend.
Easy Read, Easily Worth the Time & Money You'll Spend On It.......2006-12-07
"The Art of Business: In The Footsteps Of Giants" is a feel-good business book. That's meant in a nice way. It's not a `do it this way and you'll be wildly successful, then you'll feel good' book. It's a `here are some great stories' book that you'll feel good about after you read it, but also be able to practically apply whether you're a one-(wo)man band or leading a division of hundreds.
In this book, Yeh successfully marries Eastern life philosophy with Western business philosophy. One of Yeh's inspirations in writing this book was Sun Tzu's "The Art of War", an immensely influential ancient Chinese book on military strategy. Early on in his career, Yeh said he noticed that many top Japanese executives read "The Art of War." Yeh's other inspiration in writing this book was his frustration with the cold, systematic approaches outlined in so many popular management books. By blending these two cultures, Yeh is able to apply the Eastern ideas of balance and organic wholeness with Western business management ideas.
In the prologue, Yeh states: "Although many books attempt to translate Sun Tzu's wisdom into systematic guidelines for business, the wisdom of this ancient teacher actually needs to be experienced rather than simply analyzed. To offer you, the reader, that experience, I have chosen to present Sun Tzu's teachings in story format. These stories describe how the best companies in the world have put Sun Tzu's strategies to work, allowing you to follow in the footsteps of giants...". And that's exactly what Yeh delivers in "The Art of Business: In The Footsteps Of Giants".
Yeh divides the book into five sections: The Art of Possibility; The Art of Timing; The Art of Leverage; The Art of Mastery; and The Art of Leadership. At the beginning of each of the major sections, Yeh spends some time laying out his ideas of the topic and their relationship to both Eastern and Western ideals. Then he tells three different stories about three different organizations (or in the case of The Art of Leadership, people) that all relate to the topic at hand. The stories aren't prescriptive; they're illustrative, giving great examples of his ideas in action. The stories are easy reads, like reading a good novel instead of a `here's what's good for you, do this, do that' run-of-the-mill management book.
As someone that has read many business and management books, some chosen for me and many chosen by me, I would rate this book in the top-tier, primarily because of its simple, eloquent way of bringing balance to business. It's worth the time and money you'll invest in it, and worth keeping in your library to re-read in the future.

Great Insights and Advice.......2006-01-14
Leader who are centered, self aware and live "in the moment" have a unique presence. They make an a big impact on people because of their stillness, clarity, and humility. This book does a wonderful job of revealing how certain leaders have acquired the inner soul and spiritual presence to transform organizations.
Leadership is an "art" and this book teaches you how to become the artist! Many great stories and examples are included in each chapter.
Walk Outside the Corporate Box.......2005-07-25
There are a lot of books out there which are geared toward the businessman that can mold their corporation around a universal example which may be obtainable in both theory and practice; however for a small enterprise like mine finding a business book that quotes examples relative to the scope of my organization are impossible to find. In order to utilize my experience from reading The Art of Business I found it necessary to throw out most of the physical examples and concentrate on the underlining theories.
Perhaps the most dramatic jump I was able to make was at the example of Singapore. From the books example Singapore's only natural resource was its uneducated and untrained population. I was able to implement the Singapore model by evaluating my workers ability to receive and implement education and advanced training. The resulting workforce became an in-house force of loyal employees.
Personally I can only recommend this book to those who can think outside the corporate box. If that happens to be who you are get a copy and don't follow the examples to the letter. Allow your business to flow through the examples till you find one that works.

Excellent Take Along Book for Holy Land Tour.......2007-09-26
This is a MUST HAVE with you when you tour the Holy Land..either by yourself or with a group. Keep the book with you as you travel the Holy Land. In it the author tells you a short historical description and more importantly gives you Bible verses where it is mentioned in the Bible so that you can really get into the meaning and feelings of the Holy Land. The book is set up in alphabetical order by the name of the locations... very easy to follow and locate your area. I highly recommend this book as a carry along book on your trip to the Holy Land. It will add more meaning and insight into the experience.
Not helpful for guided tours.......2007-02-04
I recently returned from a trip to Israel and I had purchased this book before the trip as a guide. I never opened the book even once 1) because we had an excellent tour guide, and 2) because it includes way more places than what is necessary. The information in the book is quality but if you are going with a tour I wouldn't bother with it. If you are exploring on your own I would recommend it. I would like to see maps in this book to show where these locations are and perhaps organized by region rather than just alphabetically. If you want a great resource to take with you purchase the "DK Eyewitness Guide of Jerusalem and the Holy Land." I thoroughty enjoyed it.
A must have for pilgrim travel to Israel.......2005-08-16
This is a wonderful little book that contains scriptural references for virtually all of the traditional Christian sites in Israel. It is invaluable to take along when viewing the various religious sites so that their biblical mention can be easily found and read. When I lead tours to the Holy Land, this book is one of three that I advise visitors to consider taking with them (the others are, "Holy Land" by Jerome Murphy-O'Connor, and "The Millennium Guide for Pilgrims to the Holy Land", by James H. Charlesworth.
AN OUTSTANDING WORK.......2000-06-19
As a traveller to the land of Israel twelve times I have been privileged to see first rate the expertise that went into the pages of this book and I have had many positve comments from those I have shared the book with. A preacher's son describes the part on the "Ark of The Covenant" as an exceptional writing done by an expert in her field. The book is a must for anyone going to the Holyland.
Great Guide.......2000-01-18
This is a handy little guide book that could travel with you as you visit the sites mentioned. It lists the history of each place and other interesting facts. It has several useful lists of information at the back of the book. Mrs. Crown-Tamir knows her stuff and has put together a useful, inexpensive guide. I found myself wishing for a large foldout map to see all the places named, however that would probably make the book too expensive.

Book Description
No one can be like Jesus yet we can all be like Jesus. In all of history there has never been--and never will be--anyone like Him. In this extraordinary book, devout Christian and internationally acclaimed speaker, author and sports executive Pat Williams reveals the pure essence of Jesus. Although Christianity teaches that Jesus is God, most people lose sight of His humanity. Through the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Williams helps us understand who Jesus really was--His mind, His wisdom, His love, His humility, His courage and His goodness. The story of Jesus' life is told powerfully and dramatically and the meaning of his teachings is compellingly brought home through contemporary stories of people who exemplify what it means to be like Jesus. The Jesus of this book is truly the Jesus who lived and identified with us and with whom we also can identify. Williams provides persuasive and provocative insight on how to truly be like Jesus through His teachings and this living example of genuine love, forgiveness, prayer, obedience, service, humility, integrity, leadership, and more. This uncomplicated and fascinating work will enable readers to learn from Jesus' life, understand his words and build his traits and character qualities into their lives. The quintessential book on how to live a better life and create a positive and lasting effect on the lives of others, How to be Like Jesus may be the discovery of a lifetime.

A Classic..........2003-06-05
This will make any serious christian's library. Pat Williams really hit the jackpot here. Peaple will demand this book hard-backed and translated into other languages. BRAVO!
AWESOME ! A LIFE CHANGER ! MUST READ !.......2003-05-29
How to Be Like Jesus: Lessons on Following in His Footsteps is one the the BEST books I have ever read. I have never read this Author before, but came across this book in my local Target store. I loved it so much, I bought another copy and gave it to my friend as a gift!
In this book, Williams and Denney capture Jesus' character in such an awesome way. It is the first book I have come across that tells us so much about Jesus' character as He walked this world. You feel what he felt, you want to love like He loves.
If you want to know Jesus, deeper and more intimately, read this book. I refer to it again and again, when I need a reminder of why I am here.
I thank the Authors for this wonderful book !

Book Review
How to Be Like Jesus
Pat Williams with Jim Denney
© Faith Communications, 2003
Have you ever read a book so profound in its message, so skillful in its delivery, that you wished you had a boxful to hand out to your friends? As an avid reader, I can think of about three that have impacted me to that extent. How to Be Like Jesus is one of them.
No matter what church you attend or belief you adhere to, if you're honest you'll admit that Jesus Christ was not only a real person, but the most influential person in history. Some believe he was a great teacher and philosopher, while others believe he was who he claimed to be - God in human flesh, come to seek and save the lost. If you are of the former persuasion, this book will challenge you to consider his claims, based on evidence from his life and the lives of those he has impacted.
No one, the authors remind us, has ever had his impact on history or society. In pointing out that uniqueness Pat Williams and Jim Denney admit that no one can be like Jesus. So why read further? Certainly because it is so engagingly well written, but also because of the next line: "...yet we all should be like Jesus. It's a paradox - a deep truth wrapped in a contradiction." I don't know about you, but a mysterious statement like that makes me want to know more!
In the pages that follow, the authors skillfully unwrap this deep truth by offering concrete examples from the life of this remarkable man, Jesus Christ. Beginning with "How to Have Integrity Like Jesus," readers are transported in a time machine of words back to the Jerusalem of Jesus, accompanying him from Nazareth to the Cross of Calvary. And as we walk alongside him, we see him brought to flesh-and-blood life through fresh, practical lessons in character development.
Concluding with the facts of his own life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ, Pat Williams invites you to discover for yourself that fear, pain, grief - even death itself - can be conquered if you will dare to be like Jesus.
How to Be Like Jesus is a book for everyone who desires a life of purpose and victory. What a different world this would be if we all wanted to be like Jesus!

Book Description
In A Rambling Fancy, Caroline Sanderson seeks out Jane Austen’s England – the churches, great houses, coaching inns, rectories and seaside lodgings – to see what still remains today. Following in Jane Austen’s footsteps, Sanderson tramps the muddy fields around Austen’s childhood home in rural Hampshire, walks the elegant streets of Bath, and strolls along the breezy promenades of south coast resort. Drawing upon Jane Austen’s letters as well as her many novels Caroline Sanderson charts her own experiences of the very places from which Jane Austen sought inspiration, reaching some original and fascinating conclusions.
Sanderson, a lifelong Austen devotee, also sheds light on just why this very English novelist is still so universally cherished and why Austen’s influence remains so great. Are we riding a wave of nostalgia for a way of life now completely lost to us? Or have we finally cast off the chintz and embraced Austen as a novelist for our own times – one whose understanding of how we behave towards one another, and of the importance of money, sex and social status is just as pertinent as it ever was?
Customer Reviews:
One Woman's Footsteps.......2007-04-08
I read this while in England. It is just one woman's opinion and reactions to various places that Jane Austen knew or wrote about. The author revisits these places herself and writes about how they are now. To me, the best part was what she wrote about the bedrooms in Chawton (Jane Austen's home) - I hadn't known there had been work done since my last visit. Her descriptions motivated me to return to Chawton. I'd say this book is not a valuable addition to the Austen-lover's library but it is of some interest to the dedicated fan. Some of her descriptions were sufficient; I no longer felt I had to visit those places myself. She does a fair amount of extra digging and research that enhances her visits and takes them beyond what I would be able to get out of going to the same places. Steventon is a place in point, as nothing of the original house remains except a pump in a field. The author went to a lot of trouble to find out what had been there when Austen was growing up. The worst part of the book for me was the misuse of a quote about Wickham, which the author used to state that Wickham used to go to Bath when he regretted his marriage to Lydia and needed more excitement. The actual quote merely said, "Lydia was occasionally a visitor there, when her husband was gone to enjoy himself in London or Bath..."

Most travel guides are long on information and short on wisdom; readers going to Rome will find plenty of both in Enrico Bruschini's In the Footsteps of Popes. Bruschini, a noted expert on the Vatican, writes with the enthusiasm of Rick Steves and the calm assurance of a Fodor's guide, with a depth of knowledge about religious and art history that exceeds them both. His book is literally a step-by-step guide through the Vatican's museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica, with photographs and histories of every major point of interest, from the Pieta to Raphael's Transfiguration. Bruschini candidly informs readers of his opinions about what's worth seeing and what can be skipped. And he breathes fresh life even into descriptions of the best-known sites, as when he reminds readers of the familiar story of Michelangelo's creation of the Sistine Chapel's frescoes: for four years he worked lying on his back, "the paint dripping in his eyes." Details like that make In the Footsteps of Popes a valuable addition to the growing body of guides for spiritual travelers. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
In a tiny enclave in the heart of Rome lies the administrative and spiritual capital of Roman Catholicism, and the world's smallest independent state. Within its walls, during the course of the past fifteen hundred years, successive popes have commissioned and assembled an extraordinary collection of artistic works. Now Professor Enrico Bruschini, the eminent Vatican City expert and former fine art curator of the American embassy, takes readers inside the magnificent galleries and museums of the Vatican with a personal tour through its sacred halls. Drawing on his vast knowledge, Bruschini vividly brings to life works by Raphael, da Vinci, Caravaggio, Michelangelo, and many other artisans while sharing interesting curiosities about the artists, their art, and the historical context in which they worked. These intimate descriptions allow Bruschini to illuminate both the artistic importance of the featured works and their cultural significance as he explains the profound impact they have made on Western civilization for nearly two millennia. In addition, Bruschini's unprecedented access to areas rarely open to the public allows him to offer a unique, behind-the-scenes tour of the Vatican revealing its most intimate secrets and treasures. With rare photographs from the Vatican archives and helpfuI maps to aid future pilgrims in planning the perfect itinerary, In the Footsteps of Popes is an enticing book for Italian enthusiasts as well as armchair travelers to savor -- Bruschini offers an absolutely extraordinary Vatican tour that is not to be missed!
