Customer Reviews:
Michael Brein's Guide to Honolulu & Oahu By the Bus.......2007-05-14
What a waste of money! I was expecting some information to help traverse the island by public transportation and all this guide did was show a map.Don't buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You get more information off the Internet.
A Great Tour Guide That Saves You Money.......2006-11-20
I enjoyed the book. I was able to use it as I toured Honolulu using the local bus system. A great guide for touring on your own.
A map, NOT a book.......2006-11-09
I also felt misled by the way this map was marketed. As a map, it is probably a good one as some of the reviewers that used it indicated. It is NOT a book. It is priced like one and I feel ripped-off. When it came, I couldn't even remember ordering something like it and couldn't understand why I would have paid such an exorbitant price for a map. Coming back to the Amazon site to research how this error occurred, I realized that the error was not on my part. I paid for a BOOK because it was presented as such. I got a MAP, not the sales pitch that was given for the product. A product may be good, but if it is misrepresented, you feel that you have been sold a bill of goods. It is not a guide as one thinks of guides, but rather a tourist map.
Somewhat Useful, But A Marginal Value.......2004-11-23
This map is useful for negotiating the bus schedule of Honolulu and Oahu, but it has three principal drawbacks: the maps themselves are fragmentary and not good for overall awareness of where you are going, although in mine the bus route numbers had just been updated (as had the price); the map is expensive for what you get; and the map presents little text information about using the bus, and leads users to believe that the round the island bus tour is a viable option (most people would disagree and would recommend taking a day tour, which are abundant in Hawaii.)
On the positive side, "TheBus" is much easier to figure out with this guide, and the information is kept very up to date by the publisher. "TheBus" is suitable for travel around Honolulu; if you are going to venture further, skip it (and this map) and rent a car or take a tour. A much better overall alternative to this map is the Nelles Maps "Honolulu and O'ahu" map. It is not specifically as useful for bus riders, but for most travelers, it is perfect: detailed, user-friendly, and complete. Unless you only care about bus travel, I recommend the Nelles map instead.
Misrepresentation.......2002-05-11
This item has been wrongly labeled as a paperback book. It should be better labeled as a map. And as a map it is extremely overpriced. The contents are in very small print which means that it is difficult to read The pictures themselves look like they were done on the cheap. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I was not amused when I received this item in the mail.

Book Description
One of the most widely reviewed debuts of the year, Sightseeing is a masterful story collection by an award-winning young author. Set in contemporary Thailand, these are generous, radiant tales of family bonds, youthful romance, generational conflicts and cultural shiftings beneath the glossy surface of a warm, Edenic setting. Written with exceptional acuity, grace and sophistication, the stories present a nation far removed from its exoticized stereotypes. In the prize-winning opening story "Farangs," the son of a beachside motel owner commits the cardinal sin of falling for a pretty American tourist. In the novella, "Cockfighter," a young girl witnesses her proud father's valiant but foolhardy battle against a local delinquent whose family has a vicious stranglehold on the villagers. Through his vivid assemblage of parents and children, natives and transients, ardent lovers and sworn enemies, Lapcharoensap dares us to look with new eyes at the circumstances that shape our views and the prejudices that form our blind spots. Gorgeous and lush, painful and candid, Sightseeing is an extraordinary reading experience, one that powerfully reveals that when it comes to how we respond to pain, anger, hurt, and love, no place is too far from home.
Customer Reviews:
So good I had to teach it.......2006-10-05
I was assigned a "Literature and Society" class, the content was left up to me. One of my goals was to teach my students about other cultures in a way that they could relate to different issues that concern different peoples. Of all the books I ordered this was by far their favorite, it is well written and it is deep without being cryptic or snobbish. The author has an amazing ability to transmit feelings and his awareness of subtleties in human nature is delightful. Hope he keeps writing.
Brilliant portraits of modern Thai life.......2006-08-22
Sightseeing is a brilliant collection of short stories that capture the essence of Thai life. If you want a romanticised view of Thailand as the "Land of Smiles" then forget this book. It mixes gritty realism with an exuberant spirit. It portrays a world where brutality is in as much abundance as kindness.
The stories cover subjects such as a Thai teenage boy's romance with an American tourist and a young boy accompanying his older brother to a karaoke bar. The final story, which is also the longest, tells of a family where the father becomes obsessed with cockfighting and seeking revenge.
This is Rattawut's first book and it shows he has considerable talent. He writes in English and has a Master's degree in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan. I look forward to reading his first full length novel about Thailand.
book of my summer holiday.......2006-08-07
i found this book at the local bookstore in Bangkok. i was traveling in Thailand alone for the first time and desperately needed a travel companion like this. the book turned out to be really entertaining and i loved the every episode in it. i think this book made my trip 7 times more fun giving me a glimpse of local people's daily lives. made me want to know more about the country, the culture and the people. pick this one instead of The Beach if you want to know more about the real Thai people while traveling.
a must read .......2006-03-20
one of the best books ive read in a long time-im waiting for his next book-hurry please
"The earth is a tightrope; out train speeds across the flat, thin wire.".......2006-01-08
Sightseeing is a remarkable collection by an author with a keen sense of irony and a talent for description, modern-day Thailand brought to chaotic life in a series of stories that are charming, insightful, touching and remarkably astute. The language is fierce: "The dilapidated playground. The pond with its perpetual scrim of scum. The mangy strays sleeping haphazardly in the streets. The porridge and plantain vendors." Most told in a personal narrative, the stories are varied scenes of love, betrayal and abandonment, always sympathetic and compassionate. Without losing the unique flavor of Thailand in the modern world, every aspect of the country is revealed, the poverty, the lush terrain, the greedy and careless farangs, the spirited Thai people, Cambodian immigrants, the streets teeming with faces, some curious, some defeated.
"Farangs" begins innocently enough, a young man regularly enamored of female tourists in their bikinis, especially Americans, destined to have his heart broken over and over, with only his pet pig, Clint Eastwood, for consolation. An eleven-year old boy admires his older brother in "At the Café Lovely", their adventures revealing the dangerous habits of huffers in back alleys, where igniting paint thinner can envelop an unwitting face in blue flames. Yet memory is strong, even years later, the street-tough, newly-orphaned brothers speeding through the night on a motorcycle. "Draft Day" portrays an ultimate betrayal by a lie of omission, years of friendship thrown away as two young men appear for the annual draft lottery. In "Sightseeing", the title story, a son and his mother take a last opportunity to share a short vacation, knowing that soon their lives will change irrevocably.
Each new story intensifies the emotional terrain, the characters struggling for dignity in a harsh world. In "Priscilla the Cambodian", two boys make friends with a gold-toothed Cambodian immigrant, as the ramshackle shanties fill in the land, bringing down the property values of local residents. When the enclave is torched, the Cambodians gather their few belongings, ready to move on to the next spot: "Surviving each day seemed a victory and a wonder to them." "Don't Let Me Die in This Place" exposes the fragile bonds of family love and how they are tested, when a wheelchair bound grandfather moves to Thailand to live with his son and "foreign" daughter-in-law, two "mongrel" grandchildren that the curmudgeonly old man comes to love absolutely. Finally, "Cockfighter" is the coup d' grace, a complicated tale of dominance, pride and dishonor, as a man seeks to hold his own at the local cockfights, brought low by a violent thug, but ultimately triumphing with the love of his family: "What kind of world we live in, what men are capable of."
Each intricate drama is sensitive, exploring differences in step with a changing environment, savoring the small moments of the human condition, a grand tour of the modern world, the author an able and astute guide through the pitfalls and pleasures of Thailand, an adventure with heart and spirit. Luan Gaines/ 2006.

The guide shows which transit to use, which transit stops to board and exit, and, using detailed mini-area-walking maps, how to walk exactly from these transit stops directly to the visitor attractions. Additional nearby points of interest are also indicated on these mini-area-walking maps. An ultra-large official map of the Paris Metro is also provided. Customer Reviews:
exceptionaly useful.......2005-10-10
Quite useful with a minimum of travel-guide blather. Will prevent a first-time visitor from getting lost on the way to most places a tourist wants to go. Clear directions on using the Metro in a readable size (the 'freebies' from the Metro system are great if you are travelling with a magnifying glass).
Time for it to be up-dated or I would give it 5 stars.
High price for low quality.......2002-03-30
There are more comprehensive guides available for less money (or free, even). It is printed on paper that is just a step above newsprint. Save your money for a more complete guide.
Out of Date and Expensive.......2001-07-19
Compared to the free metro maps distributed throughout Paris, this one is a loser. While its large type makes it easier to read, it also makes it more cumbersome to unfurl while traveling. Its directions to tourist attractions are provided by any decent guidebook as well as signs and maps within the metro. Worst of all, the map is out of date. The new, ultra modern, Meteor line is not shown on this map.
A limited, expensive map.......2001-03-19
I bought this map along with the Paris Mapguide based upon the reviews here. It's an oversized metro map with mini-maps to 50 attractions. I never found a tourist destination that wasn't easily found from the nearest metro. You can get a free metro map when you buy a ticket or pass. Buy this only if you don't want to pull out your reading glasses to use the Paris Mapguide, but you'll still need a regular map to find the location of a restaurant or shop. Get the Paris Mapguide or the Michelin blue book instead. (To add insult to injury, there's a advertisement for the Paris Visite pass on the back, arguably the worst value for public transport in Paris.)
Gallery and Museum Tour to Paris.......2000-02-20
I took a small group to Paris to visit the Galleries & Museums. Using this guide to get around Paris by Metro was just terrific. We really had a great time following the guide. It was as much fun doing that as was seeing the sights, galleries. My next trip will be to England, you can be sure I will be using Michael Brein's Guide for London. Thank you Michael for doing such a good job!

Bought as a reminder...........2007-08-23
If you visit Las Vegas, a trip to the Valley of Fire is a must! I bought this book because I wanted a reminder of how beautiful this area is and because my photos didn't do it justice. The photos in this book are beautiful and the history and background provided about the Valley makes me wish I'd had the book with me when I was there.

Customer Reviews:
So little time, so many hikes.......2001-08-04
I acquired this book to help our gang of 4 couples decide where to hike and where not to hike. It was the most useful of several books that we had available. All the information was up to date and useful to us and helped us avoid crowds, get to where we wanted to be at the right time with the correct amount of gear. The group had a very wide range of abilities from very good to where is the elevator? It permitted people to pick and choose which hike to take and when to "take a hike"
Best book under ten bucks in my collection!.......2000-05-16
62 trails and sightseeing hot spots covered in this book. 16 of the spots are roadside or treks under a quarter mile. Each entry includes a superb historical review and a short trail description. Trails are grouped into eight areas. Each area contains an overview map. Tables also categorize trails from easiest to most challenging. Other useful tables list trails by vortex, ruins, vistas and more. Page fourteen maps out the labyrinth of rock formations. To date I have hiked over half the trails listed. As an avid hiker and Webmaster of HikeArizona.COM I can truly recommend this book.
Sedona Guide: Day Hiking and Sightseeing.......2000-01-11
My wife and I spent about 10 days dayhiking in the Sedona vicinity. We found this guide much more satisfactory than any of the pamphlets or maps obtained in tourist information sites. The guide gives good directions to trail heads and lists them in catagories from easy to challenging, and from scenic to most interesting. An accurate discription of the hike and what you will see is also found in the guide. If you're not a hiker, there is also a guide to sightseeing spots accessible from roads. A short history of Sedona is included, and even a list of old Western movies that were shot in the area. I would recommend this guide to anyone who would be visiting the Sedona area.

When given the option of retiring early, they jumped at the opportunity, disposed of their worldly possessions, bought an RV, and took off! They spent the next six years exploring and devouring the sights in this wonderful country, while enjoying the total freedom of RV travel. Sightseein' and RVin'.......2006-03-08
This book opened my eyes to the joys of RVing and the Wonders of our Country! It's not a "how-to" book but more of a "why-to" or "why-not" story of two mid-westerners who broke tradition and set off to follow their dreams. While pursuing their goal of touring all the states, they explored National Parks and popular vacation spots, along with discovering unique destinations you won't find in guidebooks. I highly recommend this entertaining book to RVers, future RVers, armchair travelers and wannabees.
THIS is how to travel!.......2005-09-20
The authors have an uncanny ability to find everything there is to do and experience in each place they travel to. They don't just stop and look, like typical tourists. They learn everything they can about the culture, geography, history, uniqueness of a place and experience it with all their senses. For example, at Death Valley: "We stopped to walk through the remains of a gold-mining operation...the silence was fascinating. It wasn't a 'deafening quiet,' where you're in a closed room and can hear your heartbeat, but a strange lack of sound and space and time." "Taking a step on the dry rocky ground made a crunching sound that might be heard by a coyote in those mountains." The Chinese laborers at the borax mines "who dug these mine shafts and built these adobe buildings in the 120 degree summer heat also had to boil the minerals extracted from the ground before loading the pure borax into the 20-mule team wagons for their 60-mile haul. Can you imagine that heat?" (p.141)
This book has added to my list of must-see places, and changed it into a list of must-experience places. The authors have become my personal travel guides.
