Customer Reviews:
The best book ever written about tornadoes.......2003-10-22
Interesting, enlightening and useful are only a few of the adjectives that describe this book. It has everything from exciting stories to amazing facts. While the book includes many incredible photographs, they are intended to educate rather than just inspire awe. Whether you are interested in storm chasing or just want to recognize and protect your family from dangerous weather formations, this is the book for you. It truly has truly something for just about everyone from the light browser to the seasoned chaser. This is a book that everyone in tornado-prone areas should have as a reference!
Great for beginner storm chasers or Midwest residents........2001-09-06
Well, it's not quite everything, but if you live in the Midwest you should really consider getting this book, whether it be used or new. It offers many different images as far as storm structures, tornado structures and clouds.
Diagrams are offered for 1) viewing the inside of a "worst-first" thunderstorm, 2) viewing the inside of a "worst-last" thunderstorm, 3) inside a tornado, 4) two pages of drawings of different "breeds" of tornadoes, 5) damage paths with debris location, etc.
There are small side notes on almost every page including "weird" information, myths, quick reference, highlights and checklists.
As for beginning chasers or settled chasers with bad luck (such as I), this is a great book to get started with. Aside from Arjen and Jerrine talking about one specific storm that spawned two tornadoes, you'll also learn about "The Storm Environment" (p.68). The Storm Environment explains the different types of clouds that are present with storms and what to expect with them. This section lasts two pages. The "Weather Words" section will get you up to date on your vocabulary used throughout the book. Although there are no scientific words that you'll never understand written throughout the book at all, it does contain words like aloft, updraft, downdraft, inflow, outflow and core. If you're unfamiliar with these words (or you simply think you know what they mean) this could come in handy. A small section is given to weather offices, such as SKYWARN and CANWARN.
This book will also describe to you the difference between a tornado, twister, funnel, funnel cloud, wall cloud, etc. Some of them have no differences at all, even though they are thought to have different meanings.
So far, I have only gotten through the two chapters focusing on Severe Storms and Tornadoes. I'll be back to update the review after I've gotten through the entire book. Enjoy!
Pleasantly written, diverse & well-illustrated tornado tome.......2001-07-04
Although the authors are Canadian, and aim the book at an audience north of the U.S., American weather enthusiasts and anyone wondering about tornadoes will soak this up. "Under the Whirlwind" is a solid work overall; and for a self-published book, it is amazingly informative and accurate. Readers may be as surprised at the Verkaiks' insight into severe storms issues, since they are not meteorologists. However, their devotion to learning scientific concepts, combined with their extensive storm observing experience and conversational writing style, allows them to succeed with this book. Although the reading is light in a purely technical sense, I found only a few typos and insignificant errors. More important are the clear messages of practicality, realism, education and compassion in the book -- which includes numerous suvivors' tales as well as segments on insurance coverage and helping children to deal with storm-related tragedy. The authors convey a wise message of safety and responsibility as well, for example: "After damaging tornadoes strike there are usually calls for better alert systems -- more bells and whistles.... But the best warning you can have comes from keeping your eye on the sky."
The illustrations are numerous and excellent, without peer in popular severe weather literature. Their deep artistic and educational appreciation for the wonders of a stormy sky pours forth in the form of dozens of full-color photos -- many consisting of spectacular storm structure scenes taken on their forays to the American Great Plains. These aren't presented just to show off the Verkaiks' mastery of storm photography, but to aid in interpreting cloud features. There are also several interesting, high-quality, contributed photos of Canadian tornadoes which never have been published before. The Verkaiks richly endow the volume with drawings, tables and color graphs as well, including numerous inset trivia boxes scattered throughout the book related to debunked tornado myths and tornado oddities.
Because this hasn't been a widely advertised book or peddled by a major publishing house since its 1997 debut, it may go under the radar, so to speak. But it is well worth the cost for students and general audiences curious about the mysteries of tornadoes.
It was the best book I have ever read on the subject........1999-05-01
Under The Whirlwind is, one of the best books about tornadoes available. By reading the book, you will gain an amazing amount of knowledge, and be able to look at the sky with amazement and knowledge about what you see happening. It explains everything you ever wanted or need to know about severe weather and tornadoes, and it is written in understandable terms. Buy this book, and impress your friends with your knowledge of the stormy sky!
This is the best Ontario tornado book out there!.......1999-04-17
I am very pleased with this book. It gives great in-depth detail about what a victim goes through during a tornado, how to read the stormy sky, about the tornadoes in Ontario, and what to do after a tornado. I have personally met the authors.

Book Description
As powerful now as when first published in 1983, Lynne Sharon Schwartz's third novel established her as one of her generation's most assured writers. In this long-awaited reissue, readers can again warm to this acutely absorbing story.
According to Lydia Rowe's friend George, a philosophizing psychotherapist, a "disturbance in the field" is anything that keeps us from realizing our needs. In the field of daily experiences, anything can stand in the way of our fulfillment, he explains-an interrupting phone call, an unanswered cry. But over time we adjust and new needs arise. But what if there's a disturbance you can't get past? In this look at a girl's, then a wife and mother's, coming of age, Schwartz explores the questions faced by all whose visions of a harmonious existence are jolted into disarray. The result is a novel of captivating realism and lasting grace.

Deserving of every star it gets.......2006-01-29
I recommend reading this book as a pair with Kate Walbert's "Our Kind," for a rich and comprehensive look at what happened to the "Seven Sisters" (i.e., Wellesley, Smith, Vassar, Barnard) women from the 1950s and early 1960s. "Disturbances in the Field" is the kind of book that makes you run out to the bookstore or library to see what else you can find by the author--it's that good. I think other readers probably got even more out of it than I did, being unfamiliar as I was with a lot of the philosophers mentioned and the tenets of their schools of thought. But the stories that this novel tells about Lydia and all her friends from this era have plenty to offer even if you are not familiar with the philosophers. I would recommend sticking with it through the first few pages, which might seem a little daunting at first--it is definitely worth seeing through to the end.
I've got a different opinion of the book........2006-01-07
I really enjoyed this book. But I disagree with the other reviewers about the language. I thought it was good to discuss philosophy but I felt the rhetoric got in the way of the story. I lost interest in the characters for awhile and skipped over much of the dialogue. I liked the theme of the book and definatly understood the "Disturbances in the Field." I just wish the author didn't jump around from chapter to chapter. I hardly realized what had happened to change their lives so drastically until a few pages into the chapter. All in all, I'm glad I read this book but I didn't need Philosophy 101 again to enjoy it.
Writing that carves out the sharp edges of life.......2003-07-21
I have never read a book that better describes the fullness of life and emotions and the grace of acceptance. The weaving of philosophy throughout the book provides a handle for the characters to check and compare the lives they thought they would lead and the ones they are living and how to help each other along in that journey. The many sides of friendship shine brightly. The perils and joys of love in all its complexity are drawn with Schwartz's lush brush of words. The depth and breadth of grief felt with the loss of a child will never be better defined in all it's many facets. This book is a gift to readers.
Better than a gourmet meal!.......2002-11-14
I read this wonderful novel quite a few years ago and it has remained in my mind as the best novel I have ever read. I read it slowly, the way one would approach a gourmet meal, savoring each turn of phrase in my mind much as one would hold the taste of finely prepared food on the palate-letting it linger to better let it absorb, as opposed to the way I usually read novels, gobbling them up quickly rather like fast food.
I highly reccomend this book to anyone who appreciates fine writing, a good story, and depth of feeling.
a life affirming story about survival.......2001-07-30
This book came highly recommended, was a struggle to find it because it's sadly out of print. The first half describes the routine life of a young woman-of friendships, marriage, children. The second half weaves the threads of ordinary routine and balanced life into a complex and revelant story of a couples' journey through a parents worst nightmare. Their survival so thoughtfully narrated brought laughter, tears and understanding. Schwartz's insight to loss and love is a lesson for all. My book is underlined and stained with tears.

Riot Prevention and Control: A Police Officer's Guide to Managing Violent and Nonviolent Crowds
ASIN: 193182844X |
Book Description
This is the latest edition of an important U.S. Army field manual (FM 19-15) covering the procedures and tactics used by the military in civil disturbances. Early chapters focus on basic principles and concepts, but most of the book provides detailed descriptions (with illustrations) of real street-level tactics to handle disturbances. Some of the techniques covered include:
* Isolating the Area
* Protecting Likely Targets
* Establishing Area Control
* Neutralizing Special Threats
* Force Options
* Crowd Control Formations
* Riot Control Agents
* Riot Batons (baton grip and positions, offensive and defensive techniques)
* Extreme Force Options (ring airfoil, shotguns, rifles, machine guns)
* Apprehension and Detention Operations
The book states up front: "The purpose of this field manual is to provide guidance for the commander and his staff in preparing for and providing assistance to civil authorities in civil disturbance control operations. It discusses the principles, policies, and legal considerations that govern the commitment of federal forces to civil disturbance control operations, the principles of civil disturbance control operations, planning and training for such operations, and the operational tasks and techniques employed to control civil disturbances and neutralize special threats. This guidance is intended for use of both active and reserve component US Armed Forces. Commanders of federal installations that use nonmilitary personnel, such as DOD police or contract security guards, for security must consult current DOD policy on the use of such personnel in civil disturbance control operations.
In Chapter 1, this manual states: "Civil disturbances arise from acts of civil disobedience. They occur most often when participants in mass acts of civil disobedience become antagonistic toward authority, and authorities must struggle to wrest the initiative from an unruly crowd. In the extreme, civil disturbances include criminal acts of terrorism. Civil disturbances, in any form, are prejudicial to public law and order. Under the US Constitution and the US Code, the President is empowered to direct federal intervention in civil disturbances to: Respond to state requests for aid in restoring order. Enforce the laws of the United States. Protect the civil rights of citizens. Protect federal property and functions. Under the Constitution, each state is responsible for protecting life and property within its boundaries. State and local governments use their civil forces to maintain law and order and to quell civil disturbances. However, if a civil disturbance exceeds the resources of a state, federal troops may be called upon to help restore and maintain law and order. The Constitution and federal statutes authorize the President to direct the use of federal armed troops within the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and US possessions and territories and their political subdivisions. The President is also empowered to federalize the National Guard of any state to suppress rebellion and enforce laws. Federal aid is given to a state when the state has used all of its resources, including its National Guard, to quell a disorder and finds the resources not sufficient."

El Niño in History. Storming through the ages........2002-05-28
This book, written by Dr. Cesar Caviedes about the historical implications of El Niño, is an excellent source of information and also a valuable teaching tool for undergraduate teaching. I have used the first chapter to explain to the students of an introductory Environmental Science course at Georgetown University the basic oceanic and meteorological processes that are involved and explain El Niño events with great success. The book does not only offer clear explanations, but it also is rich in appropriate illustrations that further clarify the intricate concepts. The book is written in a very engaging and creative manner reflecting in my opinion Dr. Caviedes' expertise in this subject and also his qualities as a teacher.
A work like this entices the reader to look at history with a new and different perspective, a history which is much more intertwined with climatic events than we may have assumed. The discovery of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), the failure of the Napoleon campaign in Russia and the defeat of the German Army at Stalingrad during the Second World War, are telling examples that attest to the importance of environmental circumstances in the outcome of some human affairs.
I enjoyed this book the first time I read it and I still savor it when I return to its most thrilling passages. Highly recommended!
Historically correct.......2002-03-12
Press attribution of the unsusual weather of 1998-99 to El Nino gave hitherto unprecedented notoriety to this profound weather phenomenon, thus leading much of the public to believe that this was something new. It is very ancient.
Because of an interest in the history of sailing ships, this reviewer thought he was knowledgeable about El Nino, which controls the Humboldt Current flowing up the west coast of South America, significantly affecting sailing ships and vital for Peru's fisheries.
Nevertheless, this scholarly and thoroughly documented account was a revelation in its details of El Nino's long history and vast worldwide climatic effects, both beneficial and disastrous. This book can be strongly reommended, not only for meteorologists and climatologists, but also for archaeologists, historians and anyone concerned with agricultural policies anywhere.
Most particularly, this is recommended reading for anyone producing computer models purporting to forecast global warming trends.
El Niño in History.......2002-03-05
Dr. César Caviedes' recent book entitled El Niño in History is based on numerous historical references that the author has collected over more than 30 years. In the early chapters of the book oceanic and meteorological mechanisms of El Niño and its counterpart, La Niña, are described. The author then identifies and examines numerous events in political, military, social, economic and cultural history that were influenced by El Niño and La Niña. Events include storms and floods, droughts, military campaigns, hurricanes and shipwrecks covering a wide time frame extending from the present to more than 10,000 years ago.
The author describes an example of how El Niño altered civilizations. He uses the Chicago Field Museum study in northern Peru (Nials et al. 1979) to illustrate a multi-disciplinary approach to identifying historic El Niño episodes in periods when climatologic data are not available. In the Nials study archaeologists, geologists and other specialists compared large river deposits left by contemporary El Niños with fossil deposits found in the area. As a result of these comparisons Nials and other investigators were able to date and size historic El Niño events in pre-Columbian Peru. Investigators were then able to conclude that the coastal Moche and Chimu civilizations were decimated by El Niño associated floods and droughts which ultimately led to the ascendance of the mountain dwelling Incas.
The author issues a direct challenge to readers of his book who are fond of environmental history. He suggests that they search written sources for references to extreme climatic events that serve as a back drop for notable historical circumstances to see if they can be related to a specific El Niño occurrence.
Dr. Caviedes is to be complimented on his excellent presentation of a complex and intriguing subject. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a multi-disciplinary interest in history. Accept his challenge and identify a previously unknown civilization altering El Niño!
Excellent book to learn about the impacts of El Nino!.......2002-03-04
The author explains in very clear language the complicated El Nino phenomenon and its far-reaching ecological, social, economic and political impacts during the last few centuries. The book is an excellent example of how an interdisciplinary approach can shed light on a complex oceanic-meteorological event and its ramifications throughout the world and human history. The author weaves meteorology, oceanography, history, economics, ecology, and political and social sciences in to a rich account of the history of El Nino. The book is founded on thorough scientific research, yet completely comprehensible for a lay person like me. The clear style of writing kept my attention to the last page. The numerous illustrations and graphs are very effective and helpful. Anybody who is interested in El Nino and its impact on human events will find this a very insightful book.
Great book about historical facts of "el Nino".......2001-08-27
Dear Sir or Madam, While visiting the city of Toronto in Canada recently I came across a new book about the climate phenomenon "El Nino". After having read this book all I can say that this title is excellent, and probably one of the best documented books published lately on this subject. The historical perspective projected by Dr. Caviedes is of great value to people that dedicates time to think about, or, to study all the latest changes in the weather patterns that we all see nowadays, and some of us experience first hand. Like this current summer drought across Canada, whereas in some other areas of this great country were suffering heavy rains and potential floodings three weeks ago in the midwest of our province of Alberta. In a few words I recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding these modern type of climate changes, Excellent and the most complete and documented of the works that I have seen published lately. Sincerely, Gui Lagos Calgary, AB. Canada.

Snow and the American Landscape.......2005-07-13
Bernard Mergen's Snow in America puts the subject of snow under the microscope. He meticulously analyzes its significance in terms of cultural history -- historical, literary, artistical scientific, political, and recreational usage within the American landscape. This is an extensive piece of scholarship that is well researched with much detail. Mergen suggests that the book was specifically written to tell the story of snow and the responses to it, and how it relates to its importance to other issues. He admits that snow has not invoked a sense of appreciation as water, but with Snow in America, he attempts to define the truth about it (xii).
One of the most interesting aspect of the book are the quotes that begin each chapter. They derive from excerpts from well-known poems from literary giants, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Wallace Stevens, which have centered on the subject of snow. Mergen writes of snow's historical significance in the first four chapters of the book, and conveys to the reader the origins of metaphors and symbolism of snow came about. The concluding chapter, "The Modern Minds of Winter," critiques and analyzes snow as it pertains to literature and art. And the amazing part of the book are the many illustrations that document the beauty and picturesque quality of this natural substance. However, Mergen, suprisingly, did not include one picture by Currier and Ives or elaborates on their significance to a snow covered landscape.
Snow in America will be a delight to read during the dog days of summer as well as during any season of the year. For the sake of curiosity, it is a welcome to read. In general, the book will also serve as an important reference tool on the subject of snow in any genre.

Customer Reviews:
TOO LITTLE HERE.......2005-04-11
The basic facts behind Florida's hurricane history are included here. The book is filled with figures and statistics. No storm is left out. Yet much of what is included could probably be found in an internet search. The book is too small to provide much of real value to most readers. Other publications will give the reader more for the money, even if he is interested only in Florida.
A very informative book, a shelf book for all of Florida.......1999-01-27
Florida Hurricanes and Tropical Storms is a very informative book that will enlighten people in Florida as to the areas most susceptible to hurricanes, the history of hurricanes and the least likely area to be struck. John Williams adds some personal accounts from him and partners that picks an otherwise dry subject for some and makes it a book you don't want to put down. The book needs updating, as it only covers the hurricane season up to 1996, but the pictures and charts are very helpful for the researcher and casual reading alike. Probably the best book on hurricanes dealing specifically with Florida.
