Book Description
W is for Wolf. . . .
Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose are thrilled to visit Wallis Wallace at her new cabin in the Maine wilderness. On their very first day, they glimpse a white wolf and her babies on a cliff. But soon after the kids spy the wolf family, the pups are wolf-napped! Can Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose sniff out the culprits before the white wolf starts suspecting them?
“An appealing combination of intrigue, ingenuity, and good fun. A great recreational choice for newly independent readers.”—School Library Journal
When he’s not writing a thrilling new A to Z Mystery or Capital Mystery,
Ron Roy spends his time traveling all over the country and restoring his Connecticut farmhouse. The author lives in Manchester, CT.
Customer Reviews:
This is a great series!.......2006-04-09
I like this book because it is an adventurous book and it is also a mystery. Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose help their friends by saving baby wolves from wolf-nappers. If you want to find out how they rescued the wolves and who took them, just read the book! The White Wolf is not the only good book in the series - all the A-Z Mysteries are good. There is one book for each letter in the alphabet. The first one is The Absent Author. Once you read that, you will want to read all the way to The Zombie Zone!
A Good Mystery.......2005-10-21
(8 year old reviewer) I really liked this book. It kept me interested until the end. THe best part was when the pups returned to the mother, but I won't tell you how that happens. You will just have to read it!
Great Book.......2004-12-22
(8-year-old reader) Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose just got to Wallace's cabin. They have seen lots of wolves. Soon pups are taken! Read this book to find out who took the pups!

Teaches a Good Lesson for Kids but a Bit of a Misleading Title.......2007-08-31
This is an okay storyline, nothing great or memorable but it does teach some good lessons such as if you find something you should try and track down the owner or hand it in to the appropriate authorities (in this case the small town police officer) rather than just keep it for yourself. The only problem I had with this book is the misleading title. The book had nothing at all to do with an island that at any stage of the book is ever invisible (it was a foggy day on one of the trips, but this is a bit of stretch for even the most imaginative). I would think most people typing invisible into their library catalogue or purchasing through a retail store website would reading the title expect the book to actually have some element of invisibility in the storyline. The back pages tell us some kid from Ohio won a competition to name the book (who obviously needed to think up something with two words beginning with the letter I) but you'd think the competition would need the title to be related to the actual story though and not just a random name drawn from a barrel which was obviously the case. That's my only problem with this book though, it would be an enjoyable read for anyone after a group of kids solve a mystery adventure read.
The Invisible Island is the 9th book in the A-Z Mysteries series set in the small town of Green Lawn. Reoccurring characters from previous books, kids named Dink, Josh and Ruth decide to go on a picnic to a river island called Squaw Island which pretty much has nothing except poison ivy growing on it. At least that's what the town assumes but the kids find a hundred dollar bill. Handing it into the police they are told it will be there's to keep if no one claims it in 30 days so head back the next day to see if they can find more. They stumble upon a major crime but and fear they have been spotted by one of the criminals. Being adventurous kids they decide not to just leave it up to the police to solve but to try and solve it themselves which of course gets them into a bit of trouble along the way.
If you were actually after invisibility junior fiction check out My Best Friend Is Invisible (Goosebumps) by R. L. Stine, You Are Invisible: CYOA #48 by Susan Saunders, The Invisible Day by Marthe Jocelyn, Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich by Adam Rex, Possum Magic (Voyager Books) by Mem Fox, in fact you can even get an illustrated version of H.G. Wells 1897 classic The Invisible Man (Great Illustrated Classics).
A to Z Mysteries The Invisable Island.......2006-08-29
The book I read was a great book but the author could be more specific when he says Ruth Rose's little brother "Nate" has magical stones and when he cleans his room his magical stones turn into nickels. Also I think it's dreadful that the dog Josh owns has no name in this book.

Racially inappropriate island name.......2006-04-12
This book refers to "Sq**w Island". That word "Sq**w" offends many American Indians because it means a woman's "private parts". Sadly, many non-Native people (including even some teachers) are unaware or this. Many American Indians refer to this word as "the S-word". American Indians have been fighting nationwide to achieve elimination of this word in geographic place names. Several states have done so. It is especially sad to see this book with a recent 1999 copyright because that means that the author, editor, proof readers, etc. were all ignorant that this word offends many or most American Indians. All copies should be "recalled" so that no more children are exposed to this usage. No responsible teacher or library or parent should provide this book to children because of this fundamental flaw. Any redeeming qualities the book may have cannot offset this racially offensive flaw.
The invisible island.......2001-08-04
I'ts really not so great on my opinion, but I reccomend it. The reason why i'ts not so out of the extrourdinary is because it has some parts that really don't make sense.

Book Description
When the class project on coral reefs accidentally falls into the aquarium, everyone is upset. They had all worked hard to create Ms. Frizzle's Big Book on the Great Barrier Reef. Now their reports are soggy and smeared. Tim is especially disappointed - some of his best artwork was in that book. But never fear, Ms. Frizzle always has a solution, and it's called a field trip. When the class climbs on board the Magic School Bus, they are headed down under. And they'll dive deep into the wild wonder of coral reefs.
Customer Reviews:
Science is a splash in this story!.......2006-05-26
Ms. Frizzle's class has been working for days to prepare presentations for the school's big assembly for Ocean Awareness. It instructs students on "how important it is to respect how everything in nature works together" and "that things are not always what they seem." Tim and his classmates learn so much about oceanic life around corral reefs. This book should be used when teaching an ocean unit in elementary school. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did!

Book Description
Winner of the National Book Award for first fiction, Easy in the Islands is a collection of stories by one of America's foremost contemporary fiction writers. Infused with the rhythms and the beat of the Caribbean, these vivid tales of paradise sought and paradise lost are as lush, steamy, and invigorating as the islands themselves. From fishing fleets in remote atolls too small to appear on any map and reggae bars on islands narrow enough to walk across in an hour, to the sprawling barrios and yacht-filled marinas of Miami, Bob Shacochis charts a course across a Caribbean that no one who has ever been there on vacation will recognize.
Customer Reviews:
Amusing and interesting short stories from the Caribbean..........2006-08-01
My wife and I were asked to read this book of short stories before our first trip to the Caribbean. I thought it was amusing and interesting throughout. No wonder it won the National Book Award for First Fiction. With shades of American writing from the south, these short stories convey the dilemmas, humor, and enigmas of being a whole person mutated by time, place, temperature, sea, flowers, gender, and color. Wonderful stuff. You won't go wrong.
I had high hopes for this book.......2005-09-24
After reading "How to Breathe Underwater" I was beginning to think I liked short stories, so I had hopes for this book
I'm not normally a fan of short stories, so to hold my interest the book must be engaging. This book was not - it was just a long boring book.
The first story was about getting his dead mother off the island, which actually was one of my favorite stories, but only because of the black humor of it.
Some of the stories were written in a dialect that was very hard for me to understand.
"Lord Short Shoe Wants the Monkey" was just a weird story - I couldn't really get anything out of it. It might be because I'm not familiar with the Caribbean, therefore I couldn't appreciate the stories, whatever it is, I will not be keeping this book in my library.
Most Accurate Book About Caribbean Culture.......2002-12-14
I can't believe this book is out of print, it is by far the most accurate book on the culture of the Caribbean. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in St. Vincent in the Caribbean and I believe the author also served in the same area in the Peace Corps. With every short chapter, i was amazed at how he captured the essence of life in the region. I have bought this book for all my friends and family who asked me what it was like to live in the Caribbean, this book is a true treasure.
As Easy as it Flows.......2000-07-12
Diving head first into the collection of short stories that together embody the spirit and adventurous energy of the islands, I swam in the wonderfully clever landscape that Shacochis has painted for his readers. He writes with such ease, his characters seemingly existed before their stories were created. More than this, Shacochis does a dream-like job of taking the reader on an adventure, which is overall, the appeal of islands.
Each more independent than the last, the stories flow effortlesly into the reader's subconscious, relaxing the muscles, and wandering the islands in the reader's mind. It is as if the landscape itself acts as a continuously appearing character, simply asking the reader to open up to new and exciting experience.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys leaving their mind, if only for a brief while, to swallow down the purity of a presumed paradise. Don't hesitate on this one, turn off the television, and get on board for "Easy in the Islands". Who knows, you just might not want to leave once you get there. It is that easy!

Book Description
The year is 1635, and Mary Williams and her family live in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her father, Roger, is on trial for preaching new ideas about freedom. When found guilty, he flees into the cold, telling Mary that she must trust in God's providence to see him to safety.
Roger's only hope of survival lies with the Narragansett Indians. Will Mary ever see her father again?
Customer Reviews:
Great History book for young readers.......2007-07-12
I am very impressed with the detail of this book. 2nd - 4th graders are introduced to the Puritans' struggle for religious freedom and their tendency to fall back to old patterns of persecution. Roger Williams and his family are portrayed as the real people they were, making it easy for the ready the empathize. However, the books ends with the comment that the separation of church and state has been secured by our constitution, which is untrue. The separation of church and state is an idea that came through a court decision years after the constitution was ratified.
This is a fun and adventurous book........2006-09-22
This is an adventurous book, and it is a true story. I learned that the man who founded Providence is named Roger Williams. It was nice for the kids that it was told from his daughter's point of view. I gave the book three stars because the people in the pictures were stiff and not real looking. I would recommend this book for someone who likes history.
Finding Providence Is Historically Accurate and Interesting!.......2004-04-19
I was elated to find this book, have purchased 10 copies to date for children, cousins, etc. As a 13th generation direct descendent of Roger Williams daughter Mary (later married John Sayles) who tells the simple yet historically correct and fascinating story of her father's banishment from Mass. and how they ended up "founding Rhode Island." This is simple to read for children and interesting for adults alike. I would like to recommend this for all school age children interested in learning more about our American heritage.
A book every child and adult should read........2003-04-30
I read this book to my two boys, ages 5 and 9. They enjoyed learning about such a great man. Of course, we unlike many Americans, knew something about Roger Williams before we read this book. We are descendents of his, through his son, Daniel. I was very proud to read about such a great man, who did the courageous things that he did at the time that he did them and to be able to call him Grandfather, was a treasured moment. Thank you to the Author for writing the book. What most people do not know is that Freedom of Religion and Separation of Church and State were ideas that he was the first to fight for in America. So whether you are Baptist, Catholic, Muslim or Buddhist, you should Know that the men who wrote the American Constitution, got some of their ideas from a man who lived 150 years before their time; and that he fought for you to be able to worship as you choose.

Customer Reviews:
More than we expected.......2006-06-23
My two grandsons, ages 5 and 7, are fascinated by adventure, swords, treasure, and secrets. I picked up the first two volumes of Treasure Island in this series because I thought they would enjoy reading them aloud themselves. They love them! We read them together, their parents read them with them, and we all are eager for more of the story to be published. All this so we can delve into Stevenson's original together in the very near future, maybe as early as next summer. Hurry with the rest of the story, please.

best $15 spent, if you like to cook, and enjoy Thai food, etc........2007-09-05
Have you ever purchased a colorful asian cook book from the discount bin at the local bookstore, to find it's all pretty photos, but otherwise filled with aimless, unremarkable yet needlessly complicated or unclear recipes? I have.. to the point that most of my cooking involves going online, to find at least 3 recipes for whatever I have in mind that evening, and to use the best parts of each found recipe to come up with my own.. Well, I need to do so no more so far as Southeast Asia is concerned, thanks to the Laursens wonderful, concise, yet roomy-enough-to-allow-me-to-experiment recipes. As my wife knows, i HATE following recipes, as most 'exotic' recipes usually call for at least ONE vital mystery ingredient I will never stock, so I usually end up chucking the recipe and instead blaze thru my own rebellious trail. Well, the Laursens allow me the breathing room to make substitutions, letting me know which ingredients are key, and why, and how to make do when you don't have them all, and it's all very reassuring, aiming primarily at providing a basic, straightforward foundation for south east Asian cooking. Food the locals eat, yet with just the right amount of westernization, this book was written for me.. No wild look-at-me recipes that you will either make once and never again or not dare to make at all.... I was such a geek I took the book to my local asian supermarket and was found in the sauces/spices aisle thumbing thru pages to make sure I knew which soy sauces/fish sauces/chilli pastes to weed thru... Enough of my quirks.. the recipes? I've had this book but two days, and have made 2 meals, that will make my local thai/vietnamese restaurants sadly miss a good chunk of my business, as they came out flawless; amazingly so, given the simplicity and conciseness of the recipes...Again, best $15 spent.
THE BEST book in my kitchen.......2007-03-13
I have savored so many recipes from this book. I absolutely amaze my dinner guests with the recipes!
Great book with simple, straightforward recipes.......2006-10-18
I find myself reaching for this book quite a bit. I've made quite a few recipes from here with great success; the flavors are fresh, bright and bold, and many of the recipes are inherently healthy. There's great stuff here for weeknight meals, but some of them are still nice enough for casual company dinners. This is not an entirely authentic cookbook, but it's still all very tasty. If you don't have an Asian market locally (or large Asian section at your local mega-mart) you might find some of the ingredients hard to source, although that's not a problem for me being in the Seattle metropolitan area. Make sure you try their recipe for Saigon cinnamon ice cream - it's foolproof and to die for.
Southern Girl in Colorado.......2006-03-30
This book is fantastic. It is practicle and easy to use. It convinced me to make my first attempt at homemade Thai and it was contagious. Our friends loved the recipes (they usually eat Mexican) and now love thai dishes. I need MORE receipes, please do another cookbook, and thanks!
