Book Description

Fr. John McCloskey has become a famous "convert maker" in the power corridors close to the White House and various government agencies. Having run the well-known Catholic Information Center in the heart of Washington, DC since 1998 and ending in the beginning of 2004, brought McCloskey in direct contact with numerous well-known and lesser known Washington figures who have been directly instructed, encouraged and assisted into the Catholic Church by this priest-evangelist.

This work is a joint effort of McCloskey and Russell Shaw, a well-known Catholic author and speaker who also works in the DC area. Based on the great success and influence that Father McCloskey has had in helping instruct many converts to Catholicism, especially numerous high profile DC figures, this book is a powerful combination of the methods, theology, and theories that McCloskey uses in his evangelization efforts.

In addition to his compelling insights on how to teach or share the faith in a winning, inspiring way, this work includes the contributions of several dozen converts of Fr. McCloskey who give their own moving testimonies of why they converted to Catholicism, and how that life-changing journey happened for each of them. Many of their writings reveal extraordinary perception regarding the workings of grace and the dynamics of the spiritual life.

5 out of 5 stars The call of the laity.......2007-06-18

Drawing on his vast pastoral experience, including his time as Director of the Catholic Information Center in downtown DC from 1998 to 2004, Father McCloskey has distilled in this book (written together with Russell Shaw) some pointed reflections on how best to serve as God's instruments in the conversion of others.
The book starts from a twofold premise. Firstly, in our "age of the laity", the specific call of lay people is to be apostles to the world rather than crowd the sanctuary. (Father McCloskey's "Sermon for Our Times", on page 58 of the book, is a forceful invitation to avoid the risk of "clericalizing" the lay person, a danger against which para. 45 of the 2004 Instruction "Redemptionis sacramentum" by the Roman Congregation for Divine Worship called to a sane relationship of complementarity between the cleric and the lay person, each one with his complementary gifts.) Secondly, effective apostolate is not a light endeavor but (as Father McCloskey writes on page 91) an investment into spiritual growth by the evangelizer himself/herself: it "must flow from prayer and mortification and participation in the sacraments - from one's own ongoing ascetical struggle to put on Jesus Christ."
On the basis of these premises, Father McCloskey shares his insights, with the help of actual stories by converts, into how best we can help others to have a personal encounter with Christ.
The book is enriched by an appendix containing the "Catholic Lifetime Reading Plan", a list of solid works for Christian formation compiled by Father McCloskey while a Director of the Catholic Information Center.

This book starts by surveying the use or neglect of good faith in European contract law and traces its historical origins. Its central part takes thirty hypothetical situations that have attracted the application of good faith and analyzes them according to fifteen national legal systems. It concludes by explaining how European lawyers, whether from a civil or common law background, need to come to terms with the principle of good faith.

5 out of 5 stars Un avanzado case book de derecho comparado.......2007-05-23

One father's mission to find his daughter

I am a father who has no idea what has happened to his child. The questions run through my mind all day long. They keep me awake at night. Is she dead? Is she alive? Is she being held captive somewhere? Are they hurting her? Is she crying out for me?

3 out of 5 stars Review of Aruba - The Natalee Holloway Story.......2007-09-17

I never finished the book. About 2/3 of the way through I got really tired of hearing the bitterness within the words of the author (Natalees Father). Yes, I felt his pain but he continuously seemed critical of Natalees Mother and it showed in every chapter. Both parents lost a child here and a public book was not the way to express his obvious bitterness about Natalees Mothers 2nd husband or his money. Throughout the book he speaks in terms of "I" as though he were Natalees ONLY parent. As a Mother myself, I felt outraged that it was not "WE". Even though Natalees parents are divorced, they shared this loss.

Many statements in the book are extremely contradictary and confusing. At one point it says the people of Aruba seemed to be hiding something and then in the next paragraph it says that almost everyone in Aruba offered to help in the search. I felt this book was more about the author than his daughter and I was greatly disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Aruba - Dangerous Paradise!.......2007-08-13

Aruba was one of my dream vacations. After reading this book, having 2 young daughters and a young son...I changed my mind.

Caution to American people! We whine about our system, yet we fail to realize that there is nothing like the "good old USA." When you see blue, warm beaches, tropical palm trees, cold coconut drinks, but if it's outside the US territory, it's a dangerous place (Aruba is no exception). All they want is your American dollar. Go to Hawaii instead, and boycott Aruba. If you get hurt in Hawaii, you can file a lawsuit and fight for your rights; if you die in Aruba, no one cares. This was proven by the fact that when Dave Holloway arrived in Aruba, the police were not even aware of Natalee's disappearance. Lots of American resources had to be involved in finding her.

We can only wonder what happened to Natalee Holloway. Since it happened on a foreign soil, I doubt that we will find the answer.

4 out of 5 stars Riveting story, tragic, but a recommended read.......2007-07-21

I enjoyed this book yet it is so very tragic... I now fear having to travel far away. The laws in other countries can be very scary. Having lost your child and not knowing exactly what happened to him is probably the worst thing that can happen to a person. Still, as a story, it is riveting and I do recommend this book to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Obviously Aruba doesn't agree.......2007-05-21

This is for cheriwave and for anyone who has followed this case as close as I did, they will know why there are posters on here for Arubas side. They tend to come into every Holloway forum there is to get their 2 cents in. Its horrible how they not only took the only Natalee that her mom and dad had, now they try to make it look like its their faults also. Aruba the "book" is right on as far as how it all went down from 2005 till now 2007, and Shango is not silly! He was an actual person getting info out to the USA to try to help. Mafia run aruba is trying to cover for their tourism, and the sooner the public understands that the better. Aruba lovers need to go and buy Joran Van der Sloots book, and read some lies that he is making up in order to make money from tragedy. Dave, Stephanie, and Larry are the most down to earth and loving people you will ever meet, AWSOME book to the 3 of you!! I personally have 2 copies, and they go where ever I do, I get the word out to people who don't follow the story. I have so much more to say on this subject, but lets just say, this cover-up is coming to an end, so watch out suspects, you'r justice will be served. The BIG man knows how, and who, and one day you will pay for what you have done.

5 out of 5 stars Aruba: The Tragic Untold Story of Natalee Holloway and Corruption in Paradise.......2007-04-11

I enjoyed this book and appreciate Mr. Halloway's sharing his story, but it is tragic and I no longer want to travel away...the laws in other countries are scary...to not know what happened to your child is an internal hell forever. My prayers are with the family of Natalie...

5 out of 5 stars A Blessing.......2001-03-05

"It Was Good-Making Art to the Glory of God" brings forth many struggling topics and themes that Christian artists are challenged with. These essays are writing by some of the most important Christian artists today (i.e. Makoto Fujimura, Theodore Prescott, and Edward Knippers.) The book discusses issues looking at our fallen world with a realistic point of view. It teaches to face evil head on and to point towards the grace, the hope, and the glory, namely Jesus Christ. As God's children it explains our need for art in the church and in our communities. It also depicts the problems of Christian art, with topics such as GOOD, ("The efforts of most artists who attempt to present a picture of `good' tend toward dishonest, sugary sweet propaganda. They ignore the implications of the fall and paint the world as a shiny, happy place." -Ned Bustard, "Good"), EVIL, and IDENTITY. It is hard being both Christian and artist. It seems no one understands you in the art world and no one understands you in the Christian world. This book praises our gifts of creativity and imaginations, in which we learn to integrate both our faith and art, and return these gifts to praise Our Father. "It Was Good..." should be essential to your book collection. I once had a discussion with a friend of how we can meditate on a single passage for hours. These essays have been so inspirational that I have spent some nights restless, because I could not wait until the next day to work on my own art. It is such a blessing to know, in this generation (so full of narcissistic and meaningless art,) that this book is out there to help other Christian artists. I personally feel doubly blessed because I am still an undergraduate in art school. I feel a great comfort to apply and develop these ideas into my own critiques. But this book goes way beyond the ordinary art school critique and grows toward my relationship with God and towards his people.

Book Description

The good news that God’s Word proclaims is a recipe to use in times of disaster. That is to say, it comes as a relevant announcement only to those who are in trouble for one reason or another. This book calls for more realism in facing life’s challenges and a richer view of God and his purposes to match them.

5 out of 5 stars How to deal with the reality of sin and suffering.......2007-03-02

We no longer attend funerals, we attend "memorials" or "celebrations." While we're there, we're told that so and so went to the "big fishing hole in the sky," regardless of whether or not so and so ever professed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We are told that "Every cloud has a silver lining." These are all indications that our culture cannot deal with the reality of sin and it's consequences. In Too Good to Be True, author Michael Horton seeks to provide an honest look at sin and suffering and how Christians can deal with it.

Horton begins by relating the tragic story of his parent's deaths, setting the stage for the reality of sorrow we face in our lives. The book moves from suffering to biblical truths using autobiographical stories to bring to life the theological explanations of reality. Drawing from many passages of scripture and insightful theologians throughout Christian history, Horton offers explanations of the complex nature of the world we live in points to the finished work of Christ on the cross as our true hope and joy for this life.

Michael Horton is a well established theologian with many academic works under his belt. Since I was only familiar with his academic work, I was somewhat surprised to find how well he wrote about his personal life in such a tender and insightful manner. Passages such as the following resonated with me and aided my perspective of God's work in my life: "Even in my prayers, I can all too often identify with the hymn writer's words, `Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love.' In moments of peak piety, I am still a struggling believer; and in moments of great transgression, I am still baptized into Christ's death and resurrection and thus a citizen of the new creation that has dawned with Christ's victory over sin and death and his sending of the Spirit." (p 146)

The result is an excellent book full of biblical wisdom and deep theology made practical for real life. I believe this book will be even more helpful for me when I return to it as trials occur in life, and I commend it to others as a faithful illumination of how Christians should deal with sin and suffering in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Finding Hope..........2006-12-21

All of the other reviewers have stated a case for Dr. Horton's book far better than I can. I would just like to add that I have read this book and I have recommended it to others who are wounded and are tired of looking for yet another "seven steps to fulfillment...," or "ten secrets to a happy life..." ad nauseum. One thing I have taken away from Dr. Horton's teachings is that we as humans keep seeking a way to climb up into heaven, not understanding that God has come down to us and that scripture is all about Christ Jesus and Him alone. It is not about ways to fulfill our empty hearts (and heads!). This is a wonderful journey into the person of Christ and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Horton is a Reformed Lutheran.......2006-11-11

Michael Horton somehow gets it. Having been immersed in Reformed Theology for so long, and being in the war that he is, Dr. Horton manages to get out the Good News in this little book. He does warn that this book is not to be read in the midst of times of tragedy or suffering. It is not a good gift for someone who has been bereaved. However, it does look at suffering and death sqaurely, and points to the only hope there is. If you like Gerhard Forde or Martin Luther, you will like this book, though Horton somehow does not quote Luther that much!

5 out of 5 stars 2Good2BTrue.......2006-08-09

I'm thinking that this book should be required reading for:

1. Pastors
2. Lay people
3. Anyone who is considering, or has responded to, the call to follow Christ

When I'm out and about, or even just flipping through the channels on TV, I am often confronted by statements that Christianity will "fix" your life. I admit that Jesus has fixed some parts of my life and that my life is definitely better with him than without him. However, we should never tell others, nor should we expect, that accepting the call to follow Jesus will exempt us from pain or trials; grief or temptation. Neither does it carry a promise to make us healthy, wealthy, and wise. "It isn't a technique for our personal therapy."

What Jesus does promise is that we will have trouble and that we will be participants with him in his suffering . So, unless you are some kind of sick person, this doesn't sound too exciting. Why then, would anyone choose to become a Christian?

Horton correctly instructs us that, "The good news that we proclaim is true, not because it works for people in that pragmatic, utilitarian way, but because nearly two thousand years ago, outside of the center city of Jerusalem, the Son of God was crucified for our sins and was raised for our justification. This historical event may not fix our marriages, our relationships, or our messed-up lives the way we would like, but it saves us from the wrath of God to come and gives us new life, hope, and wisdom for our existence here and now, guaranteeing the end of pain at last."

If you've been disappointed with your life (or with God) because things aren't going the way you were promised, this book should be a source of great joy. Horton makes a clear distinction between what God has promised and what (well-meaning, but wrong) people have assumed to promise on his behalf. Hope in God's promises is not misplaced and will never disappoint.

Horton has done a good thing for us all in writing this book.

5 out of 5 stars A book that grips your heart yet is theologically right on.......2006-07-22

If you're one of those Christians who are wondering if the modern-day "evangelical" teaching that God only wants to give nice and pleasant things to Christians is biblical then you must read this book.

Though Horton has written several books throughout his academic career that is very technical and scholarly (e.g., "Covenant and Eschatology," "Lord and Servant," etc.) he has also written books that really touches the hearts of ordinary lay Christians who struggle with living the faith daily - like this one.

The message that Horton wants to get across to his readers in this book is clear: though they are many joys and blessings of being a Christian, Christians will still go through troubles and sufferings. During times of crises Christians need to look to Christ alone as Redeemer for hope and comfort.

Horton's book is divided into two main parts: 1) God of the Cross (chaps. 1-6), and 2) God of the Empty Tomb (chaps. 7-10). The first section deals with the issues of suffering, theodicy, and God's sovereignty; the second deals with God as Redeemer of creation. Readers will find both sections to be practically helpful as they sort out why tragedy strikes and how Christians can have hope even in the midst of these tragedies. In summary form, Horton smashes down the unbiblical ideas presented by the prosperity teachers and seeker-sensitive pastors in this book.

Overall, the book is very helpful and theologically on target. It is also easy to read and, thus, accessible to all types of people. If you're one of those Christians who have no clue on what the Bible teaches about God's character and the nature of the Christian life (i.e., a Christian who thinks that being a Christian automatically makes your life good and easy) then you really need to pick up this book and really see how the Christian life is.

Since Larry Dossey wrote his first book, Healing Words: The Power of Prayer and the Practice of Medicine, he has toured the world meeting with audiences as diverse as Pentagon employees, church groups, and the British parliament. Regardless of the audience, Dossey noticed that most everyone seems interested in four general discussions: the scientific evidence for prayer, the controversies associated with prayer experiments, what prayer is, and how to pray. Prayer Is Good Medicine divides these discussions into four neatly contained sections. As prayer moves into the center stage of Western medicine Prayer Is Good Medicine acts as a modern-day prayer book as well as an ethical touchstone for healers and seekers.

Book Description

Physician Larry Dossey - one of today's foremost authority and most highly sought-after speaker on the relationship between prayer and healing - offers practical methods and illuminating explorations of the what, where, how, and why of the power of prayer to affect our health. Putting aside confounding scientific jargon. Dossey employs his trademark style of informed and warmly anecdotal writing to examine people's hopes and expectations of prayer, as well as their anxieties and misconceptions. For readers who want to understand the spiritual dimension of health and healing. Dossey has created an invaluable and inspiring resource.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good book, nicely balanced.. by a physician and intellectual...........2007-05-26

Larry Dossey has thought deeply about the mind/body relationship, nature of consciousness and the power of prayer. In this book, he highlights evidence for the power of prayer, but in general he backs up his assertions with facts appropriate to the area of inquiry. On the other hand, he is also open to other ways of validating truth claims than the scientific method. For example, it would be difficult to study love or consciousness using a microscope, but I don't think many people would argue that these things exist.

In general, I like all of Larry Dossey's stuff and this is one of his very popular books. It's a relatively short read and not a bad place to start. I also think his books on hearing are very encouraging, enthusiastic and written in the spirit of a true healer. His presence in medicine as a physician is a blessing. I hope many more books will come from his pen, here are a few more you may want to try:

Reinventing Medicine: Beyond Mind-Body to a New Era of Healing, Healing Beyond the Body: Medicine and the Infinite Reach of the Mind and Be Careful What You Pray For...You Just Might Get It.

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Faith! .......2006-11-01

Most of us have always felt that there must be some power behind our prayers for the sick and the ill - now in Dossey's wonderful little book you can affirm that belief. This is a great book to gift someone whio is experiencing health issues or whose loved ones are.

I personally believe in the power of prayers and have written about the healings that have come to me in my life over the many decades. In my book "A Spiritual Warrior's Journey" I have several chapters devoted to that power. It is real! Yet, it is an energy that for some that remains untapped and unused.

This book is a great red but a much better result would be to put his inspirational advice into practice. Thank God for his book! it will heal bodies and save souls!

5 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Book on the Power of Prayer.......2005-06-06

I, like many people, started praying when I was old enough to talk. I vividly remember my favorite Aunt teaching me the "now I lay me down to sleep" prayer when I was about 3 or 4 - and I said this prayer every night before bed until I was old enough to come up with my own.

Although I prayed every night, I never really thought about whether or not my prayers would be answered - I guess I just assumed they would be. That was until I became an adult, and began to realize that some were not being answered at all. Of course, I realized afterwords that the "unanswered prayer" is sometimes a blessing in and of itself!

This book helps explain why some prayers are answered and others are not, and shows through scientific evidence that there is in fact power in prayer. This is an amazing breakthrough, as we are now facing a time when prayer is being banned in all of our schools - and yet it's being shown that prayer can be an amazingly wonderful & powerful force.

This book also raises some of the issues that may await our physicians now that it has been shown that prayer can in fact help to heal the sick. Will there be malpractice law suites if a dr. chooses not to pray for his/her patients? Will people who don't want to be prayed for sue their doctors who have prayed for their health? These are quite scarey questions!

Also, what about the people who choose prayer INSTEAD of western medicine? Are they really making the right choice? According to Dr. Dossey, the best route to take when faced with medical crises is to use all that is available to us - western medicine, alternative medicine, AND prayer - no one of these is mutually exclusive.

The most important finding though, in my opinion, is that prayer has been found to be equally effective regardless of one's religious beliefs. Although this finding has upset fundamentalists, I think it's a step in the direction of tolerance towards those who espouse beliefs that are different than our own. In this respect, as well as other's, this book has the potential to "change the world"...

I would recommend this book to everyone in the health profession, those suffering ill health, and anyone who is just plain interested in the power of prayer. The scientific evidence is out, and it appears that prayer has an amazing power - why not utilize this power to help yourself and your fellow man?

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Book! Part of a Good Foundation.......2004-11-29

This is a book that should be on every healer's shelf. There is constantly new information now on this subject, and I was greatly moved with Dr. Snow's new book The Power of Divine: A Healer's Guide and the new information there, but that is to be expected as we move forward in our awareness between the power of prayer and how spirituality affects our bodies, both emotionally and physically. Mankind is taking great, wonderful strides forward right now, and not a moment too soon! Read this book and start a collection that leads you to insight and wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars pray for optimal health.......1999-08-23

Dr. Larry Dossey is perhaps the worlds leading authority on prayer and health. This examination of the power of prayer in the healing process is even more important than Dr. Herbert Benson's Relaxation Response, Remembered Wellness, and Faith Factor. The reason for this is because Dr. Dossey elucidates the true nature of the mind-body connection and points the way for prayer to induce optimal healing benefits, regardless of spiritual discipline. Five Stars Dr. Dossey!

This book is wonderfully funny and enlightning. It makes you look inward and see what need re-aligning.

5 out of 5 stars A pastor on scraped and bended knees.......2007-04-17

I saw this book on someone's wish list and was immediately intrigued by the title and decided to buy it. I am glad that I did. I have a deep respect for pastors, or anyone for that matter, that can share their short comings and their long findings about themself. It's like, "hey those shoes look familiar.... I think I walked in those just the other day!"

The last thing that I want to hear from a pastor is how they were brought up in a Christian home and yada yada yada.... had a supergodly clean life.

Not only is Brian Jones a man after my own soul, but I really dig his writing style. He will have a lump in my throat the size of a Jerusalem artichoke and the next second have me lauging out loud.

Lemme share a part of the book. At one point in his life, while he was second guessing God, he is talking to a friend and says his life is much like standing on the beach and the waves are taking the sand from under his feet, and that scares him.

His friend says, and this is my new fave quote: "In spite of all of this, I promise you can count on one thing: when the last grain of sand is finally gone, you're going to discover that you're standing on a rock"

Peeps have to know this or they will never survive the firey darts of satan. It is my new prayer that I see people as Christ sees them and to have a compassionate heart for the lost.

For the longest time I thought that I had no future as I have not planned my life out well enough. But now, I realize that it was all His plan. I will use my own life as a testimony to others. God has given me talents that will give me an edge to help others.

Thank you to the one who open'd my eyes to this book.

5 out of 5 stars More readable than "The Purpose Driven Life".......2006-08-20

"Second Guessing God" by Brian Jones shows how to live a purpose driven life rather than tell how in "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren. Not that I am knocking Rick. However I read Rick's book just prior to Brian's. When reading "Purpose Driven" my wife got mad at me because I would leave her to go downstairs to read in the quiet. With "Second Guessing God" it didn't matter what else was on because it was so engaging. The detailed and funny stories have a purpose and have me wanting to do more to serve God.

I am not sure the title "Second Guessing God" has the pizazz this book deserves. The humble but upbeat style makes this book very engaging. While reading I felt privileged to know Brian from his sermons on Sundays and to have received hugs and handshakes from him.

5 out of 5 stars Reality check.......2006-06-02

Brian's transparent descriptions of his own spiritual journey assist the reader with realistic expectations of a life led for the cause of Christ. This book is a must read for anyone searching for meaning in his life.

5 out of 5 stars Majors on how God is intimately involved.......2006-05-08

Life gets hard, harder, impossible, and we silently (or maybe not so silently) scream, what are you doing God? In Second Guessing God, Brian Jones comes up with some outstanding answers.

Just as Joshua directed the priests to put their feet into the flooding Jordan upstream from the people in order to stop the waters so they could cross into the Promised Land, so does God work beyond our sight and understanding-upstream--in our lives. Here's another of Jones' similes. Want God to work in your life? Think of Jesus like a taxicab driver. You get in the passenger's seat and let Him take over.

Pastor, leader of a support group for the sexually abused, fellow traveler in this world of trouble, Brian Jones draws examples from coping with his own problems as well as a large background of listening to others' problems. He shares a wide scope of problems with the reader from the simple (if there are any such) to the horrific. And through it all he continually shows how God actually is working. Most of us do not receive instantaneous miracles, rather, God gives us perseverance for the long haul.

Second Guessing God majors on how God is intimately involved in all facets of our life, working through others, through circumstances, through our own acceptance of living this flawed life. Jones gives us a strengthening list of what God is actually doing, illustrating each item with Scripture, experiences, and a wide variety of quotes from C. S. Lewis to F. Scott Fitzgerald to Bart Simpson. What is God doing? Working in power and compassion; understanding doubt is real and providing help; imparting insight and help through the very trials we don't want; giving help through others' witness; and, breaking what seems a brass-bound silence with His Word, the Bible. The closing section of this book turns us back to those institutions that help, urging the broken to avail themselves of that help and the rest of us to be really get in there and help. Jones looks at the church, the ministry, and that wonderful promise to all of God's own ones, Heaven.

Second Guessing God arrived for me to review right after a major problem caused me to spiral despairingly downwards. I can vouch for it. This book truly helps. - Donna Eggett, Christian Book Previews.com

Where was Danae Dobson when I was a teenager in the sixties? I certainly could have used her sage counsel during that turbulent decade. I recently purchased her new book Let's Talk, as a
graduation gift for my niece, and ended up reading it cover to cover myself. I was captivated. Dobson has penned a teenage treasure chest-a creative compendium of important insights
teenage girls need to know about God, guys, girlfriends, and growing up. With wisdom that belies her own youthful years, Dobson has filled this tiny tome with a plethora of inspiration
about everything from peer pressure to parents to personal relationships with God-and more! Her brownie story alone (which takes the cake!) is worth the price of the book! Good writing
may run in the Dobson family, but clearly Danae Dobson has found her own voice and uses it to sound a clarion call for teenage girls. If they harken it, they will navigate the teen-age years
successfully with the grace, wisdom, and blessing of God. This book is a must-read for both teenagers and those who love them.

Opening a Jane Smiley novel is like slipping into a warm bath. Here are people we know, places where we grew up. But the comforting, unassuming tone of her work allows Smiley incredible latitude as a writer, and her books are full of surprises. Good Faith, a novel about greed and self-delusion set in the economic boom of the early 1980s, is no exception. Joe Stratford is an amiable, divorced real estate agent in an unspoiled small town called Rollins Hills. He takes it in stride when a married female friend pursues a love affair with him; he is more suspicious when a high-rolling newcomer named Marcus Burns begins to influence the business affairs of the men closest to Joe. Nevertheless, the promise of easy riches draws Joe into one of Burns's real estate development schemes, and then, ominously, into gold trading. The steps by which a nice guy can be lured into betraying his principles are delineated so sharply in Good Faith that you wonder how Joe cannot see them. Although he never quite manages to understand what has happened to him, he's granted a moment of grace at the close of the novel, a second chance that has nothing to do with money, ambition, or the tarnished American Dream. Since we live with the legacy of the self-serving 1980s, Smiley's novel seems as timely as if it were set in the present. Penetrating, readable fiction by one of our best writers and social critics. --Regina Marler

Book Description

Greed. Envy. Sex. Property. In her subversively funny and genuinely moving new novel, Jane Smiley nails down several American obsessions with the expertise of a master carpenter.

Forthright, likable Joe Stratford is the kind of local businessman everybody trusts, for good reason. But it’s 1982, and even in Joe’s small town, values are in upheaval: not just property values, either. Enter Marcus Burns, a would-be master of the universe whose years with the IRS have taught him which rules are meant to be broken. Before long he and Joe are new best friends—and partners in an investment venture so complex that no one may ever understand it. Add to this Joe’s roller coaster affair with his mentor’s married daughter. The result is as suspenseful and entertaining as any of Jane Smiley’s fiction.

Download Description

Jane Smiley brings her extraordinary gifts—comic timing, empathy, emotional wisdom, an ability to deliver slyly on big themes and capture the American spirit—to the seductive, wishful, wistful world of real estate, in which the sport of choice is the mind game. Her funny and moving new novel is about what happens when the American Dream morphs into a seven-figure American Fantasy.

Joe Stratford is someone you like at once. He makes an honest living helping nice people buy and sell nice houses. His not-very-amicable divorce is finally settled, and he's ready to begin again. It's 1982. He is pretty happy, pretty satisfied. But a different era has dawned; Joe's new friend, Marcus Burns from New York, seems to be suggesting that the old rules are ready to be repealed, that now is the time you can get rich quick. Really rich. And Marcus not only knows that everyone is going to get rich, he knows how. Because Marcus just quit a job with the IRS.

But is Joe ready for the kind of success Marcus promises he can deliver? And what's the real scoop on Salt Key Farm? Is this really the development opportunity of a lifetime?

And then there's Felicity Ornquist, the lovely, feisty, winning (and married) daughter of Joe's mentor and business partner. She has finally owned up to her feelings for Joe: she's just been waiting for him to be available.

The question Joe asks himself, over and over, is, Does he have the gumption? Does he have the smarts and the imagination and the staying power to pay attention—to Marcus and to Felicity—and reap the rewards?

Good Faith captures the seductions and illusions that can seize America during our periodic golden ages (every Main Street an El Dorado). To follow Joe as he does deals and is dealt with in this newly liberated world of anything goes is a roller-coaster ride through the fun park of the 1980s. It is Jane Smiley in top form.

"It is hard to imagine how Smiley could have made Good Faith better. Like a sturdy, well-planned house, it makes room for everybody, and it ought to last a long, long time."
   MIAMI HERALD

"Stolen intimacies, greed, corruption: There's much in Good Faith that strikes a chord today... Smiley's new novel is at heart a meditation on community and the way money can warp the social contract."
   TIME OUT NEW YORK

"Jane Smiley has produced an irresistible novel of bad manners, a meditation on love and money that Jane Austen might have enjoyed, if she could have handled the sex."
   TIME

"This is a typical Jane Smiley novel, not, of course, in its subject matter, but in its power to beguile and enthrall."
   NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

"A cautionary prequel just right for our times. And great fun, to boot."
   LOS ANGELES TIMES

"[Smiley] is one of our most Dickensian novelists, her imagination is prodigious, her observations exact, and the wealth of fascinating people inside her head a national treasure."
DONALD E. WESTLAKE, WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD

"Pulitzer Prize winner Smiley once again opens a convincing fictional window on an American subculture; this time around it's financial speculation in the early 1980s... Schemes play out in a tragicomedy featuring a Dickensian mix of quirky characters cha

2 out of 5 stars Booooorrring.......2007-04-09

I really did not like this book. I was going to say I hated it but actually the writing wasn't bad and I liked some parts but it went on way too long and it was pretty predictable. I read it through just because I was sure the ending would not be what I expected - but it was. What a disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Nice historical snapshot, but thin on plot.......2007-03-17

I'm impressed by Smiley's versatility, but this isn't one of her best. Having only a teen's memory of the 1980s, I read this mostly for the descriptions of the money-flows-like-water atmosphere (which reminded me a lot of Silicon Valley in the late 1990s, a setting that I experienced firsthand). Her main character, Joe (Joey to his friends), is a genial guide to the era. And I was curious to see what would happen to him, though it was pretty clear from the beginning that he was playing with fire and should have stuck to being a successful small-town real estate agent.

But I agree with other reviewers that the midsection of the book goes nowhere fast, supporting characters are not developed as fully as they could have been (I would have especially liked to know more about "the Davids"), and the ending is abrupt. Smiley may have thought it would be too pat to reveal Marcus Burns's motivation, but I would have found it a lot more satisfying to have an answer, as opposed to several pages of ruminating from Joey about how unsatifying it is not to have an answer.

Worth the time to be reminded of an American mindset that seems to hit us every decade or so, but you're not going to spend much time thinking about the characters after you finish the book.

3 out of 5 stars Fair.......2006-06-26

Pros - Readable. Has a "Definitely Could Have Happened" plot and general feel (and probably did, and probably still does). Doesn't get too bogged down in too many characters, ridiculous settings, etc.

Cons- Plows through in the middle section, unless you are really interested in real estate selling in the 80s (or now). Could have snipped 100 pages off of Joe's turn to the dark side. Pretty predictable as well, you have a good inclination that Joe is going to get financially screwed in the end, it's just by who and how bad.

I would say it's worth the time, but I am not sure about buying a brand new copy.

5 out of 5 stars Smiley's Forgotten Book Is One of Her Best.......2006-06-09

Jane Smiley has written so many good books now, that one good one or another is bound to slip through the cracks. I'm sorry that this is the fate of Good Faith, because it's a very good novel, and it's about the one thing that yanks every last American's chain: money.

Oh, sure, there's plenty more, too: love affairs, friendships gained and lost, betrayals, reversals, the Eighties real estate boom and bust, the great American get rich quick scheme, the lonely man . . .

This novel has more than a little in common with Richard Ford's Independence Day, but it's a good deal darker, and its canvas is a little bigger, and its aspirations are smaller but not so small as to inhibit pleasure, and not so big as to inhibit the plain-spoken and pleasing telling of the story.

4 out of 5 stars Meet Joe, the passive bystander.......2006-03-29

This is my first Smiley novel and I loved it! I thought she did a wonderful job setting up her characters and environment. I really felt I was in a rural community in the early 1980s before our world had succumbed to the "Pottery Barn" syndrome where we all have the newest doorknobs and furniture placed just so.

I was intrigued with the "likeable" real estate agent, Joe. In my opinion, he was as much to blame for what happened as was Marcus! He was interesting to watch because he evidently had a lifetime habit of not being involved or being passionate about anything! His parents were very passionate about their faith, JOe had no passion for God. His ex-wife was very opinionated, Joe simply complied. In real estate, he never seemed too caught up in closing a deal. He was successful at real estate because of his ability to stay detached from the deal! Even with Felicity, he sat back and rode out her affections and at the first sign of her backing off, she never heard from him again, even though he was crazy about her. Talk about the walking dead!

Now, this guy Marcus comes to town and he just passively goes along with all of Marcus' ideas? I think he was curious to see how far it could go even though he professionally saw that it was surely headed for destruction! What a weak man.

I think Jane Smiley did a great job of catching a small town man at a time in his life when he was ready for something interesting to happen, but didn't know how to start it.

I agree that the wrap-up of the crises was disappointing, but workable. All in all, I found this a gread story.

Book Description

Hard cover, small format (6" x 9"), 436 pages with 40 pages of black and white photographs, 34 mostly full-page maps and 78 pages of appendices.

The Polizei-Division (Police Division), as it was originally called, was one of the lesser-known combat formations of the Waffen-SS. It was formed in October 1939 and was composed primarily of police officers, who volunteered to join the division, and it served almost exclusively on the Eastern Front until the end of the war, where it eventually was equipped as a Panzergrenadier-Division (mechanized division). This volume of the two-part history covers the formation of the division in 1939, its employment during the so-called "Phony War" prior to the campaign in France in 1940, its participation in the later stages of that campaign and, finally, its commitment in the East in the northern theater of operations. It was in the East that the division earned its reputation as a tough and able combatant force, where it was especially steadfast in the defense.

The division fought its way through the Russian Luga position and all the way to the gates of Leningrad (Saint Petersburg). Its shining hour was in the defense along the Wolchow River, where the Russians attempted to provide relief to the beleaguered city of Leningrad and trap a large portion of Heeresgruppe Nord (Army Group North) in a pocket of their own. The Polizei-Division, later renamed the SS-Polizei-Division during this stage of its history, was the lynch pin in the myriad of operations launched to both eliminate the Russian breakthrough and then trap the cut-off and encircled Russian forces. The volume finishes with the fighting in late 1942 and early 1943 east of Kolpino and along the Narwa River bend.

Friedrich Husemann, himself a former member of the divisional artillery, provides an in-depth look at his former division. The account relies heavily on first-hand sources. Besides formation war diaries and period after-action reports, Husemann has gleaned accounts from a number of surviving members of the division. Although many divisional histories are "dry" reading, this one offers the reader not only a view from the foxhole, it also places the role of the division in the larger operational picture.
