Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

The Orange Prize-winning author Kate Grenville recalls her family's history in an astounding novel about the pioneers of New South Wales. Already a best seller in Australia, The Secret River is the story of Grenville's ancestors, who wrested a new life from the alien terrain of Australia and its native people. London, 1806. William Thornhill, a Thames bargeman, is deported to the New South Wales colony in what would become Australia. In this new world of convicts and charlatans, Thornhill tries to pull his family into a position of power and comfort. When he rounds a bend in the Hawkesbury River and sees a gentle slope of land, he becomes determined to make the place his own. But, as uninhabited as the island appears, Australia is full of native people, and they do not take kindly to Thornhill's theft of their home.

The Secret River is the tale of Thornhill's deep love for his small corner of the new world, and his slow realization that if he wants to settle there, he must ally himself with the most despicable of the white settlers, and to keep his family safe, he must permit terrifying cruelty to come to innocent people.

5 out of 5 stars Whisked through a portal in time.......2007-08-24

Each time I opened Ms. Grenville's novel, I stepped backward in time. Her attention to detail saturated each page without leaving the reader suffocated. I shivered in London's biting cold and then melted under Australia's harsh sunlight. Her protagonist was all too human while all of her characters had mindsets appropriate to the period -- not marred by hindsight. I would, will and have recommended this book to everyone and anyone. Fabulously done!

5 out of 5 stars The Secret River.......2007-05-22

Great book. A sound historical baseline brings the reader from the Thames to the land down under through the eyes of a boatsman who does what he has to do to survive and care for his family. In the process, he gets sentenced to death, commuted to a Sydney Penal colony in his wife's custody, endures social injustice as a felon, eeks out something resembling freedom only to pervey social injustice against the aborigines of the Autralian back country.

Poetically penned in a font easy on 50 year old eyes. I have gifted this book to several good friends and they have enjoyed it immensely.

5 out of 5 stars A gripping novel that draws you in.......2007-04-04

I loved this book. I read it very quickly because it was so hard to put down. Kate Grenville writes beautifully and captures the magic of the Australian landscape.

The story is about William Thornhill who is sentenced to life as a convict in Australia in the early 19th century. The first part of the book concerns his life in Georgian England. He is born into abject poverty and although he tries to make an honest go of it, circumstances lead him into crime. He is convicted of theft and his sentence is to be transported to New South Wales for the term of his natural life. His wife and child accompany him. This part of the book is a little slow, but the momentum picks up once they get to Australia, about 75 pages in.

In Australia, Thornhill discovers that the new country represents a blank slate where he can re-invent himself and break out of the cycle of poverty and crime that he has come from. He quickly wins his freedom and seizes the opportunity to get his own land and create his own farm, staking a claim to 100 seemingly vacant acres of land. However this brings him directly into contact (and potentially into conflict) with the native Aboriginal people.

The book is beautifully written. It really takes you into the world of early colonial Australia and gives you a sense of how difficult a life the early settlers had. The tension builds and builds as it become obvious that some kind of conflict between Thornhill's family and the Aborigines is inevitable. It made me understand the way that good people can be conflicted about what the right thing to do is. Different settlers in the area make different decisions and as you read the book, it you wonder how you would have acted in the same circumstances. But aside from the moral dilemmas, it's just a good story: a man trying to create a new and better life for himself and his family, overcoming many hurdles and setbacks, and gradually realising that the biggest threat of all is right in front of him.

3 out of 5 stars A Howard Fast Immigrant tale?.......2007-02-07

This is a book and review that I am quite ambivalent about. I had a rather strange response to this book which won the 2006 Commonwealth Prize. The subject, the convicts who settled Australia has always been of interest to me and yet I found the book less than compelling. Its separate parts all seemed so predictable and unexciting; the characters appeared to be more props to serve as metaphors for the overall telling of the historical experience. It has a structure that turns to a monotony of this happen to Thornhill, and then this happens next with some overly "flowery" language thrown in. You know just where the plot is going and nothing surprises you. Yet, overall, I must admit the book did provided and interesting overall experience upon reflection. One of my big issues with the story is that it is so epic in nature as it is really a complete fictional biography of its major character William Thornhill. Thornhill is born poor in London, meets girl (a rather too perfect girl too), marries, gets an opportunity to succeed but is put down by the class system, is caught stealing, convicted, sent to Australia where he and family begin a new life. He then develops a lust for land, and finds the "blacks" stand in his way. The books third person narrator attempts to explain and justify Thornhill's decisions and motivations. But these came to me as a bit cliché.... Bottom line, A lust for land over all else. Each part of the book is increasingly better than the prior parts with the last two parts the most satisfying. I kind of liked the epilogue style ending. It is interesting to note that so many Amazon reviews gave this book 5 stars which it makes me wonder what other Novels they are comparing it too. It would be my recommendation to pick this up if your interested in a Howard Fast immigrant tail, but you would be better served by reading Robert Hughes's, THE FATAL SHORE.

5 out of 5 stars Confronting and totally draws you in.......2007-02-05

This is a superb book of the trials and tribulations that the early settlers faced when arriving in the newly "discovered" Australia. I won't revisit the plot and characters, as other reviewers have done this admirably, but will note that the story and the characters are entirely believable, and that the twists and turns that the plot takes could have their origins in a history book of early white settlement in Australia.

What makes this book so believable and therefore so confronting, is the dawning realisation of the main character Will that the "blacks" with whom he shares his land are indeed fellow human beings who have claims to the land, and who are inextricably linked with it the way he and his family will never be. However, it is fear for his family, whipped up by other far less sensitive souls along the river, which drives him to the horror that has so blighted early Australian history.

White Australians (and I am one of them) have over time found the history of their ancestors' dealings with the first people somewhat confronting and contraversial, and I imagine that this fine book will once again rekindle the debate relating to the occupation of a land that was home to thousands of people who were one with the land and regarded it as their mother.

That aside, it is a fine book, well written, with believable characters that the reader comes to care for. It leaves you wondering how people can live with themselves, as Will himself wonders in the last few chapters. It is a different book, apparently inspired by Ms Granville's research into her own family origins, but will resonate with anyone who lives in a country where they and their ancestors were not the original inhabitants.

Book Description

Razo has no idea why he was chosen to be a soldier. He can barely swing a sword, and his brothers are forever wrestling him to the ground. Razo is sure it's out of pity that his captain asks him to join an elite mission--escorting the ambassador into Tira, Bayern's great enemy.

But when the Bayern arrive in the strange southern country, Razo discovers the first dead body. He befriends both the high and low born, people who can perhaps provide them with vital information. And Razo is the one who must embrace his own talents in order to get the Bayern soldiers home again, alive.

Newbery–Honor winner Shannon Hale returns the reader to the intrigue and magic of Bayern, first introduced in her critically acclaimed novel, The Goose Girl. Enter a world where even those with no special magical skills find in themselves something they never imagined.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Will please young adult readers seeking action and psychological understanding alike........2007-09-07

Razo is too short to be a good soldier and it's mainly out of pity that his captain asks him to join an elite mission as an ambassador's escort, but it's Razo who discovers the first murder, and who is the only one able to befriend both high and low born people, who together can fill in details about the murderer. As Razo begins to learn the real secrets of the river he finds a newfound appreciation of his unique abilities in RIVER SECRETS, which will please young adult readers seeking action and psychological understanding alike.

4 out of 5 stars Not Hale's Best.......2007-07-03

I should preface this review by noting that Shannon Hale is easily one of my favorite fantasy writers. Her creative writing ability is notable and obvious. Take for instance the sentence "spring poked out everywhere." This book is rife with marvelous metaphors and the plot is great...but it's been done before and better in both "Goose Girl" and "Enna Burning." Added, Hale seems to make little effort to differentiate the bevy of characters she releases onto the reader in the beginning pages. I've read both of her previous Bayern books and "Princess Academy."I felt this book was cliche and overkill.

Overkill? Case in point: at the finale of our epic hero and heroine step into a boat and kiss their way to the final page. It was cliche and could have been done better.

Did I love this book? No. But I liked it. Regardless of the flaws I pointed out, this book still floats on Hale's excessive talent and imagination. Bayern is a place I want to go over and over again. I welcomed the chance, even if it wasn't as memorable as the last two times I went. For Hale's ability I give this book a three. In the general writing crowd where Hale stands a head taller, this book gets a four.

5 out of 5 stars More tales of Bayern.......2007-06-06

In this sequel to The Goose Girl and Enna Burning, we return to Bayern. Just because the war is over, doesn't mean there is peace between Bayern and Tira. Isi's going to the Tiran capital on a peace mission and Enna is as well.

But really, this is Razo's book. He's always considered himself rather useless because of his small size, so he's more than surprised when he's asked to be part of the elite band of soldiers accompanying them. He's going to be a spy.

Once in Tira, someone is burning people and Enna is being blamed. It's up to Razo to figure out who's framing his friend and trying to restart the war.

I am always surprised by Hale's amazing skill to paint an entire landscape, people and culture perfectly in a mere few sentences. Her lyrical language and voice is back and this latest installment, while shorter, is just as strong as her earlier works.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as its predecessors.......2007-05-16

I loved The Goose Girl, loved Enna Burning, and couldn't wait for this one to come out and complete the trilogy. Sometimes, however, that 3rd book just isn't necessary: it tries to spin more story where things have been nicely wrapped up. This is such a book. The story felt thin; the language is nice, but not inspired as in the first two books. The characters pleasant, but not compelling. Some of the plot developments felt contrived, especially the entire line involving Enna. Wish I'd checked it out from the library instead of buying it. The first two books are a wonderful duet. This one's okay, but not a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Even my 12 year old son loved this book........2007-05-15

He has enjoyed the whole series beginning with "The Goose Girl", but this one was his favorite, probrably because a boy was the main character. Shannon Hale is one of my new favorite authors. And what a great deal we got all the books for through Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars A surefire entry into the canon of Australian literature.......2007-05-06

Kate Grenville sure knows how to write. She is an amazingly polished and masterful contemporary fiction writer and her craft is never more evidently in display than in "The Secret River". The story of William Thornbill and his wife Sal's journey half way across the world from London to New South Wales, Australia and their seemingly endless struggle against the elements to keep body and soul together is the classic story of the early settler in the colonies. In her devastatingly torrid narrative, the Thornbills never give up - Sal in particular is a gem of a woman. She makes William's heart (and ours too) burst with pride when we see her digging deep within herself to find inner strength to support her husband's courage and ambition inspite of her own deep reservations. When the Thornbills' determination pays off and they become landowners in their own right, they start to flirt with a certain forgetfulness and go on to embellish their own history to gain social respectability. But we readily forgive them for they deserve much and their sin is only human.

Grenville's depiction of the Thornbills' unrelenting fight to the death against the creeping menace of the aborigines as they close in on their abode is never more vividly or effectively imagined. Even more illuminating is the observation that while the Thornbills and other settlers do battle with nature each step of the way for their place in the sun, the natives manage to dominate with their eery stillness. What are we to conclude from this ? That unlike the white man who is an intruder and a disrupter of nature's quiet equilibirum, the aborigine is a component of nature and an integral part of the overarching landscape ? It is to Grenville's supreme credit that she avoids politicizing the issue, leaving the reader to consider and draw his own conclusions.

If there's one modern title I predict would eventually be accepted into the canon of Australian literature, it would be "The Secret River". It really is that good.

Book Description

When Mark and Delia Owens settled in a Zambian wilderness, they found the elephants and other wildlife decimated by poachers; the local villagers, who depended on the wildlife, were driven to desperate actsincluding poaching themselves. To save both people and animals, the Owenses started an innovative microlending program that lifted the villagers out of poverty and allowed the wildlife populations to recover. But the older elephants had been slaughtered for their tusks, taking with them knowledge that had been passed along to the young for generations. Left behind was social chaossingle moms, solitary orphans, rowdy gangs of young malesand a scientific mystery: how could there be so many babies and so few females old enough to be mothers? A young orphan named Gift eventually provided the clue to the remarkable scientific discovery that revealed the elephants" secret. But the poachers and ivory smugglers shifted their sights from the elephants to the Owenses, threatening their lives, raiding their camp, and finally driving them out of the country. After two decades in Africa, Mark and Delia returned to America to find social changes frighteningly similar to what they had seen among the elephants of Zambia.

5 out of 5 stars Best yet.......2007-09-09

This is the grand finale of the Africa books for the Owens'. I have read all with great appreciataion for what they have done over many years, but I felt that this book was the best of all. It is the culmination of more maturity and experience of their programs and writing. I would recommend it to anyone with any interest in conservation. It is also glimpse into the human spirit when confronted with the difficult task of orchestrating the survival of both man and animal harmoniously. These are two awesome people doing great work.

5 out of 5 stars GIFT.......2007-09-04

Gift is the name of a little orphaned girl elephant that the Owenses had in their neighborhood. She wandered on her own and had to learn how to eat and fend for herself without any cues or training from sisters, aunts, grandmas or her own mother who were obviously all slaughtered for their tusks and meat. Mark continues to cherry bomb the poachers, Delia continues to measure elephants' sizes and clan size, continues counting elephants before she sleeps. So this latest book by the Owenses is a continuation of Eye of the Elephant and gives you a glimpse of the people who have made a big difference in wildlife management in Africa. They wind up getting kicked out of Zambia and are now back in the States trying to increase grizzly bear numbers! I can't wait to hear what they have to say about America's wildlife and their recommendations for their management. I learned in this book that George Adamson, the real life Game Warden of Kenya of Born Free fame was killed by poachers who were smuggling ivories into Somalia. It's been a problem for half a century and still continues today. Recently 2 rare white rhinos were brought to Zambia from South Africa and one was killed, the other shot...

5 out of 5 stars secrets of the savanna.......2007-08-08

I had read the owen's two previous books and really loved them. I found this one and thought well, I already know what they did so this will just be review. Well, was I wrong. It is a great book and kept me enthralled till the end. They have such a practical approach to getting the local population involved, and they have had such sucess. Anyone would love this book. It is so possitive that it just tickles your heart, and such a love story. To think they have done all this together. Wow. I gave it a 5 and would have given it 10 if I could. jeannie Clarke

Life in the harshest of places....Africa in the wildest wildness. If you love animals of planet earth, this is a book to read, weep and rejoice.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful sequel .......2006-09-02

Written so that you feel you are looking over their shoulders as they see and work in Africa. A bit of mystery, a cautionary tale and an inspirational love story. The book describes the obstacles they faced and the gile, resourcefulness, courage and passion they bring to their work and lives. A worthy follow-on to Cry of the Kalahari and Eye of the Elephant.

When prominent Jackson Hole attorneys Mary MacIntosh and Andrew Harrison realize that their legal secretary is missing, they embark on a frantic white water search down the torrents of the Snake River. Mac and Harry find themselves in a secret Popo Agie cave snagging clues that Lela left behind, while trying to outrun a drug dealer who isn't afraid to shoot to kill. What Mac and Harry discover on their perilous journey is an unimaginable web of conspiracy and betrayal shocking enough to rip apart long-time family ties in what was once a close-knit community.

"This newest read is a page turner and extremely provocative in its theme....all this guarantees that the reader will not be disappointed. Once again, author/lawyer Aplin shows the kind of imagination and savvy that is sure to delight readers." - Attorney Steve Womack, reviewing Powder River Poison, a Mary MacIntosh novel, Amazon.com

"This book is one of the few gems that you look for when you want a good read. Once you pick this book up, you simply can't put it down. I have read many thriller & horror novels, but this one is unique in so many ways! The author adds so many elements that our society is used to gobbling down - the depravity of orphanages & the atrocities in some international ones, the soul-lessness of abused children & what they sometimes grow up into, the concerns of terrorism by toxic means . . ." - Attorney Margaret Lopez Erpenbeck, reviewing Pandemic Predator, a Mary MacIntosh novel, Amazon.com

Edge of my seat, page turner, could not put it down! Maureen did a wonderful job connecting this story with the others she has written. Her excellent choice of words allow the reader to sense the surroundings the adventurous Mary MacIntosh is in. Jackson Hole is a majestic spot in the Tetons and this is all captured in her novel.

I finished the book last evening before going to bed and when I awoke this morning I was searching the newspaper for information regarding this most recent Jackson Hole incident....it is that believable.

    Book Description

The Nile, stretching for a distance of 4,163 miles, is the longest river in the world. The ancient Greeks were obsessed by the provenance of so much water, feeding a river that flowed out of the desert. Aeschylus, in 500 BC, talked of Egypt being nurtured by the snows. For centuries, the only sporadic reports from the heart of equatorial Africa came from Arab seafarers, land travellers and slavers. In the mid-1850s in Britain, the great thirst for adventure and discovery, combined with the challenge posed by the ancient riddle of the secret sources of the Nile and acted like a magnet on men such as Sir Richard Burton, Captain Hanning Speke, Samuel Baker, Dr David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley. This gripping account, illustrated with many prize-winning photographs, traces the tribulations and achievements of the men who walked in the footsteps of Herodotus and carried away the prize: the discovery of the sources of the Nile.

    Book Description

From the author of A Goose in Toulouse, the lush and personal tale of a journey along the Seine, guiding the reader through history and the heart of France.

Mort Rosenblum, a celebrated foreign correspondent, invites us aboard his 54-foot launch tied up in the center of Paris and introduces us to the characters who share his life along the river, ranging from eccentric movie stars and reclusive novelists to barge families just scraping by. He then hauls in the bow line for an unforgettable tour of the river itself from its source to its mouth. The Secret Life of the Seine is a love story between man and boat and the river that they live on, a discourse on the sensual beauty of France and the art of living well. In the tradition of A Year in Provence, Under the Tuscan Sun, and Paris to the Moon, here is what Garry Trudeau called "a moveable feast [with] a top speed of five knots-fast enough for fun, languid enough for dreaming. Take a trip you'll never take: This is what books are for."

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This is a book to read on a plane to Paris!.......2006-05-11

This is a great read, particularly if you've been to Paris or are going. It truly gives you a different view of the city. The author is living on a houseboat on the Seine and decides to travel the river from "start" to "finish". Some great characters add to the account of the journey and some interesting history emerges along the way too. I also got a vivid feel for what it must be like without having to actually endure the discomforts!

2 out of 5 stars Not what its cracked up to be..........2005-04-13

If you are interested in the plight of peniche and barge owners on the Seine(in the 1990's), and if you want some historical anecdotes culled from other authors, and info on the amount of tonnage that moves up and down the Seine, floods and navigability issues, then this is the book for you. This is definitely not an idyllic look at living on the Seine. A lot of the traveling between locations is done by car, and once on a Tourist Cruise line. The characters are mostly limited to people explaining the plight of the bargees and their possible future on the river. If you are looking for a Peter Mayle-style book, this isn't it. There are a few charming and funny moments in the first part of the book that lead you to believe that you are in for a "tour" of the river, it's food, beauty and local characters. Don't be fooled. I have spent many hours walking the the Paris Seine and there is definitely more romance than is captured in this book. Overall the book is very informative but not what the reviews lead to expect.

5 out of 5 stars Better than being there.......2001-09-04

Actually living on a boat on the Seine is a pain in the backside with leaks, breakdowns and constant maintenance. *Reading* about living on a boat on the Seine is, however, better than being there. Even though this is non-fiction, colorful characters fill the pages. If you love France, you'll love this book about the river through its heart. Rosenblum's writing is supple and never gets in the way.
