"May every creature abound in well-being and peace." (Buddhist)
Around the world and throughout time, people have found words for comfort, strength, rejoicing, and mourning. Prayers, proverbs, poems, songs--every culture has these simple gifts. In this beautiful, oversized volume, Reeve Lindbergh, daughter of Anne Morrow Lindbergh and Charles Lindbergh and author of many picture books, including The Circle of Days, gathers 77 poems and prayers in this warm, lovely collection. Each of the four sections (For the Day, For the Home, For the Earth, and For the Night) is illustrated by a different contemporary artist. Some two-page spreads consist of just one poem with a big, gorgeous illustration swirling all around. Others fit two, three, or even four proverbs or verses, nestled gracefully among the pictures. The book will make a lovely gift for families that want to embrace spirituality in many forms, from Christian to Papago to Jewish to African to Sioux to Hindu to Celtic, and beyond. Featuring well-known prayers and poems (from the Bible and Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass) and less familiar words (from Lao-Tzu and Hildegard of Bingen), this anthology, with its wonderful variety of colorful illustrations, will bring joy and beauty to every home forever and ever. Amen. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

Beautiful Gift.......2003-09-21
If you are looking for "spiritual" instead of "religious" this is a beautifully illustrated and touching book that makes a perfect gift for new parents, baptisms, etc.
Disappointed Parent.......2003-05-12
I wanted to read easy-to-understand payers and verses to my 6-year old son, so I searched Amazon and reviewed many books on this subject. I was sold on this book's illustrations and was not disappointed on that score: The Illustrations are wonderful. However the "take a closer look" guide did not offer an opportunity to review the text or prayers themselves. The pictures alone piqued my son's interest and we bought the book. Unfortunately, many of the prayers are long and tedius, losing a younger child's interest within the first six lines. The text content is incongruent with the illustration's message of young, light-hearted, age-appropriate prayer. The attempt at multiculturalism and non-demonitionalism misses the point of delivering short, sweet, enjoyable verse suited for children; prayers that will encourage children to want to pray instead of associating prayer with tedium and boredom. The book review should have indicated an age-appropriate range. My son is a smart and attentive kid who loves to listen, but he grew quickly disappointed with and disintersted in the prose.
for the young at heart.......2000-09-04
A wonderful book, and not just for children! Charming illustrations by several artists and 70 beautiful prayers from around the world. Anyone interested in spirituality should love this book.
Wonderful!.......2000-08-30
This is a fabulous book that shares spiritual words from many worldwide religions and uses beautiful illustrations to accompany them! As a person who embraces different aspects of many religions, I found this to be a valuable resource for teaching my child. And after reading the book, you get a sense of how all religions are very similar and striving for the same things - peace and harmony with all that is around us and with our Higher Power.
A breath of fresh air.......2000-08-27
This is a timely book with contents from a wide range of sources. It is well arranged and well illustrated. People tend to forget that they all have the same God. If some of the book's contents were quoted without noting the source, people might have difficulty identifying the religious origin. While the book is written for children, I would recommend it for the entire family. Perhaps it is time for people to consider that their beliefs are not very different. Perhaps children can learn to accept each other, and the next generation can learn to coexist in peace. One can always hope for the best.
Book Description
In this lyrical, hallucinatory novel set in Morocco, Tahar Ben Jelloun offers an imaginative and radical critique of contemporary Arab social customs and Islamic law. The Sand Child tells the story of a Moroccan father's effort to thwart the consequences of Islam's inheritance laws regarding female offspring. Already the father of seven daughters, Hajji Ahmed determines that his eighth child will be a male. Accordingly, the infant, a girl, is named Mohammed Ahmed and raised as a young man with all the privileges granted exclusively to men in traditional Arab-Islamic societies. As she matures, however, Ahmed's desire to have children marks the beginning of her sexual evolution, and as a woman named Zahra, Ahmed begins to explore her true sexual identity. Drawing on the rich Arabic oral tradition, Ben Jelloun relates the extraordinary events of Ahmed's life through a professional storyteller and the listeners who have gathered in a Marrakesh market square in the 1950s to hear his tale. A poetic vision of power, colonialism, and gender in North Africa, The Sand Child has been justifiably celebrated around the world as a daring and significant work of international fiction.

Wow.......2007-10-09
I purchased this book for a class, and Ill admit, once I picked it up, I couldnt put it down. The relationship between the characters and gender identity issues and very interesting. The only part I didnt like (and debated in class), was the multiple narrators that created a story within a story. It seemed out of sync and a little unnecessary, but thats just my opinion! A+ I'd still recommend it to anyone.
A terrible novel........2005-04-27
First, you must ask yourself if you are reading this for enjoyment or academic purposes, because you are unlikely to get any enjoyment out of this novel. While offering an interesting critique of society in Morocco, the novel is littered with attempts at complexity that ultimately drag it down. The author's intent to make this story have a multitude of stories isn't entirely wrong from the beginning, however as the story evolves the reader may find a lack of interest. This is because the characters are almost entirely shallow constructs, attempts at characters. While the story has many plot twists, I repeatedly found myself thinking, "Why should I care about what happens to these characers?" And the answer is, You Shouldn't! The author gives no life to the bland and pathetic list of characers, which not only grows, but also has character playing multiple roles.
As to an academic reading of the novel, it simply serves to challenge the reader by following this complex story. If that is incentive, I might add that there are many novels with complex stories just as challenging and much more intriguing. In accordance with the statement on Moroccan society, there are many books which discuss this in an engaging way.
An earlier reviewer criticized the translation, perhaps that was the problem. However, I found the real flaw here to be a poorly constructed story.
Poor translation of a major novel.......2001-03-11
This translation--unfortunately the only one of the Sand Child-- misses the mark in conveying an accurate representation of Ben Jelloun's novel. There are a number of glaring errors and omissions of original text. If it is at all possible to read the work in the original, one must. My rating is of the translation, not the original.
Amazing.......2001-03-05
If you are interested in the a dynamic world of storytelling read The Sand Child. It takes you through many tales which weave in and out of social constructs. What constructs create a female? What constructs create a male?
When I read this novel it took me through a range of emotions. It took me into arid land and it made me feel as if I was experiencing The Sand Child's world.
This book question gender construction. It has all the makings of a wonderful novel. I loved it and it made me change my perspective on how I view my world.
poetry in prose.......1997-10-16
Tahar Ben Jelloun is a master of the written word, able to weave into his novels issues of social and political concern while at the same time composing sometimes humorous, often lyrical, and always thoughtful story-lines.

Trust is one of the precious abilities that dies when a child is sexually abused. Christa Sands' personal testimony of her own dark pit and subsequent struggle back into the light will both amaze and encourage you. Sands guides you on an intimate journey to show that with God there can be healing, even from the terrors of abuse. An excellent book for someone you know who struggles with this turmoil.
Customer Reviews:
A book that will help heal.......2007-03-21
This is a book that can open up the door for those needing to let out the pain of abuse. It is also a good book for those living and loving a person that has been abused. It is difficult to understand how sexual abuse can affect a young girls perception of herself as a woman, unless you have been there. This book helps those outside of that experience to have a glimpse of the pain that is inside.
I would recommend this book to anyone needing to heal or needing to understand.
One of the best on the subject.......2004-03-17
I purchased this book for my teenage daughter who is struggling with this issue. It took her about 8 or 9 months to pick it up and read. I actually read it first and I must say it is one of the best on the subject and I have read several. I am just now working through my issues from being sexually abused over 35 years ago. This covers so much that survivors deal with & not just teenage survivors. This book earns more than 5 stars.
You will know you are not alone.......2000-01-19
There are very few books on sexual abuse by twenty-something women who have actually experienced abuse, so I've often felt like I was the only person my age who experienced it. For years I've been lying to myself about my past, and this book not only helped me come to terms with my molestation but also opened up a few discussions with my family and friends. Sexual abuse carries so many stigmas that it seems like no one will talk about it. Ms. Sands is unbelievably brave, displaying her hearbreak and slow healing to her readers so we can know that we are not alone. I cannot thank her enough for opening her heart like that. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Book Description
This is a story of hope and resilience about and by boys labeled by society as hopeless and "bad". The message of this story is that, given a means such a sandplay with which to reach into their imagination, children who have been damaged by violence, poverty, and racism can find valuable strengths and resilient qualities within.
Sandplay is used as both a therapeutic modality and as the child's primary means of communication. The choice of figures, their placement and movement through the trays and the statements that sometimes accompany this action are used in place of standard verbal responses to explore and convey the troubled child's experiences and self-generated resilient solutions.
The stories of four boys in a residential treatment setting, two from African-American and two from Hispanic families, are presented to express the particular resiliency qualities of Social Competency, Problem-Solving Ability, Autonomy and a Sense of Purpose and Future. Fifty-six color photographs of sand tray scenes and extensive quotations of their verbal commentary illustrate the "myths" these boys create. Jungian symbolic interpretations, adapted to the imaginative reality of inner-city children of color, amplify the meaning of the stories.

nice, light, stress free reading.......2004-02-22
This is such a great book. Its basically not a read-once-and -done book. Rather it is a read once and take with you to the beach and read again or simply refer back to. The book definitely put me in a relaxed mindset. A very pleasant and enjoyable read.

Product Description
A personal memoir of a woman's emotional and spiritual journey - from troubled teenage years in the '70s to spiritual enlightenment in the new millennium. Her soul wounded by her father's incestuous advances toward her, the author travels through several Middle-Eastern countries - an odd choice for a woman on a quest for sexual and self-identity, healing, and escape from her family - particularly her father. Without family support, she struggles to find spiritual wholeness, love of self, and her own truth. In the war-torn Middle East, she encounters volatile political situations, the constricting laws of different countries and religions, as well as a confusing mix of social and moral behaviours. Throughout her travels, the poverty, terror, and brutal female oppression she often observes heighten her own sense of self-hatred. Meanwhile, her teenage pregnancy, the baby girl she was forced to surrender, and her father's inappropriate actions haunt her memory. Her personal struggles with being gay, as well as denial, rejection, and harsh treatment from her family, further convince her that she is worthless as a woman - and non-existent as a child of God. But as she looks through the windows of her past, and into worlds many of us will never enter, she slowly begins to understand that her introspective journey has led directly to her soul. And this insight brings her to an acceptance of being gay, to her own belief in spirit, and to a sense of belonging. For all its raw honesty about many painful subjects-including the rape and execution of women in the Middle East - Circles in the Sand evokes the exotic tastes, sounds, and beauties of Arabia. And it shares with us the poignancy of women engaging together when temporarily apart from men - and briefly freed from their forced restraints. The author's journey into the light of self-acceptance - from a dark place where her sexuality kept her in chains - will resonate with the many who have struggled with becoming open and comfortable about their homosexuality. Her lifetime quest to have her own voice heard will speak to a wide range of today's women, whose internal struggles for acceptance are the same. The cycle has not yet been broken, but that time will come, as the young women of today listen to the voices of the past - and discover the wisdom of those women who have already walked a labyrinth of circles in the sand.

Dear Samadhi:
Hope all is well. I am finally at the library, and have the time to share my thoughts with you about your book. I manage to get here only once or twice a week. I am getting ready for a trip to England next week, something that is adding to the busyness of my lifestyle.
We met and chatted at your booth during the Body, Soul, & Spirit Expo in Calgary in April 2006.. It was just after I retired from the Alberta Government as a social worker in the child protection field. I read about half the book, and {personal life issues arose}. Your book remained untouched until recently when I managed to finish it.
I am part of two spiritual groups in Calgary and they are a good stabilizing influence. Both teachers are women who are connected to a current that I resonate with at the present time.
When I finished your book, I felt deep appreciation that I had been exposed to your journey, but traumatized over what you experienced, as a child and a woman. Though I encountered a lot of child sexual, physical and mental abuse in my profession, the job itself was highly rigid and bureaucratic, leaving me with little quality time to spend with the children.
I was a case manager and arranged for therapists to work with the children. I knew the big picture about each child, and in general terms the emotional and behavioural consequences, but I never had the chance to get into such a detailed exposé of the personal side of what the child experienced. Hence, your sharing about what you experienced as a youth and adult was highly relevant, and served to round out my understanding of what this kind of suffering is all about, including the deep emotional and mental scars it leaves.
Circumstances took you to lands where male brutality to women, both psychological and physical, not only prevailed but was culturally sanctioned. I cannot help but wonder whether you were guided to what you experienced simply in order to exacerbate your personal issues and bring the whole thing to a head, where psychological release from your attachments and inner turmoil was the only alternative for a harmonious inner life to prevail.
You came out of the other end a whole person with a lot of understanding of the letting go process, something that can help many people you encounter, if they are receptive to hearing you.
I hope your present life is fulfilling and that you encounter ongoing growth and happiness. When I settle down somewhere, which only the universe knows where and when it will be, I will extend an invitation to you and your partner to visit and enjoy our beautiful Rocky Mountains and turquoise lakes.
Best Wishes,
Doug Christou, Calgary
Amazing Journey Within.......2007-07-03
Turning the pages as you unravel each layer of the veil takes you beyond religions, borders or sexual orientation, into the core of the human Spirit. Your heart travels along the edges of your own insecurities and fears as you explore life through someone else's eyes. Samadhi's amazing journey makes you want to do something, anything, to give your higher self a chance to come into the light, release those butterflies, who in turn will give wings to every Soul they touch along the way. As the circles widen and open up, the little flutters of the voice of LOVE are heard.
Circles in the Sand- An excellent read.......2006-05-23
This book touched my heart and gave me hope that women can survive abuse in all areas and find the strength to heal and move forward in ones life. I have worked as a counselor in the area of trauma and abuse, for over twenty years. Themes of healing from trauma and discovering ones sexuality only empower and strengthen ones soul from the inside out. I could relate to the family of origin wounds for all individuals and the ability for Samadhi to discover, heal, and forgive are truly the answers to finding peace and serenity within. I was touched by each page of absolute honesty and willingness to share her story. Samadhi, you have changed my life because of this book and reminded me one more time that love does prevail. Thank you.

Impossible to put down!.......2006-03-23
Samadhi's Circles in the Sand is a thought provoking read that I couldn't wait to finish. It is well written and the story flows from start to finish. This is not one woman's struggle; it is every woman's struggle for equality, self respect and self love. I recommend it to everybody.
My only suggestion would be to include maps of the Middle East at the beginning to get a better understanding of Samadhi's travels.
Way to go, Samadhi!
What a Gift.......2006-02-13
When Janice gave me your book to read, she did so with such high expectations for the reader. I am delighted to say that I was not disappointed. Janice did say that our stories are parallel in some instances and I really enjoyed how similar our lives were and how aligned with spirit they are for both of us now.
I could not put your book down and it took me less than 2 days to complete it. Upon completion all I could think of was the many people I know personally whom could and would benefit from your story, what obstacles you've overcome and how you went about achieving it.
Thank you. It was heart pounding, shattering and rejuvenating all at once. I will be strongly recommending your book to many in Australia.
Love and light to you.
