5 out of 5 stars Magic Tree House Box Set.......2007-10-09

What can I say about Magic Tree House Books? Wow! My eight year old son has been reading them for quite a while now. Our public library does a great job at keeping a variety but doesn't always have the one that he's just dying to read today. I hope that by giving him at least a few of his own favorites that are in this set to keep on hand at home will satisfy his very large reading appetite.

We read one or two chapters a night to my 5 1/2 yr. old son everynight. He loves all the topics that the books cover....dinosaurs, pirates, ninjas, etc. Great for any little boy!

My 5 year old son loves the books. They are short enough to keep his attention, but long enough to challenge his imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift.......2007-05-12

I bought these for my 6 year old grandson for his birthday. He was excited to get them, but they were laid aside for the even more exciting toys that he received. However, as the toys got boring, these books became more entertaining. Currently he is immensely enjoying reading them. They are excellent beginning readers.

5 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2007-09-21

My girls and I so enjoy reading the other book in the series, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?". My twin girls are 2 and they would actually sit with the other book and read it to out loud to each other, so it was a great find to have another book in the series for us to read, the illustrations are colorful and a great book to learn new vocabulary words.

4 out of 5 stars Reading to your kids.......2007-09-08

This book is a great one to read to your kids.

I like this one more than his Panda Bear and Brown Bear because I can get the kids more excited about sounds. I've read it to groups of young kids and encourage them to make the sounds with me. I'll "roar" like a lion and "snort" like a hippo and the kids will parrot me. They have a lot of fun with this and you get them to start talking about sounds other animals make. They will remember the sounds after just the first reading and get excited any time they see me pick up the book.

It's really cute to watch one kid "read" this to another after we've read it in groups a few times. The kids will remember the animals and will sometimes ask "what do you hear?" and make the sounds for each animal as they go through. It's a wonderful feeling seeing them learn and remember.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have book for kids!.......2007-08-26

My kids love this book and "Brown Bear Brown Bear." The illustrations are wonderful, and they love the animals!

2 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2007-08-08

As any reader of the Brown Bear knows, these books are really meant to be read out loud. But who the heck knows how a peacock sounds (can YOU yelp?)? Or several of the other animals here. I just tossed it away in frustration.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Book.......2007-07-02

My 18 month old daughter enjoys this book. We have fun looking at all the different zoo animals. The one thing that I don't like is the last page. I wish that it had pictures of the animals instead of children dressed up as animals. When my daughter is older she will like that.

Book Description

A Boy and a Bear teaches young children how to relax and calm themselves. Written for children 3 - 10 years old, this book tells the story of a young boy who encounters a polar bear while they are both climbing a snow covered mountain. The boy and bear become friends and learn an important lesson in relaxation together. As the bear watches the boy breathing, children mirror their movements and learn valuable breathing skills to enhance their own relaxation. Children will not only enjoy the story, but will benefit by learning a self-calming technique to reduce stress, prepare for sleep, and improve self-confidence.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for children.......2007-09-20

I just finished a four week Behavioral Pain Management program. The minute I got this book in the mail, I was aware of how vaulable this would be for children who are either experiencing pain themselves, or know someone who is.

It should be a part of every school library and every counselor's office!

5 out of 5 stars This book is magic........2007-01-12

Having practiced yoga for several years I understand the power of breathing for relaxation, but I was stumped on how to teach my energetic, bouncing off the wall, 5 year old how relax himself to sleep. The Boy and the Bear has given me that tool. It's simple, meditative and calming for us all. Tonight he said "Mom, let's read the Boy and the Bear, it slows me down".

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Relaxation Book.......2006-11-10

My girls (ages 3 and 5) love this book. The can pretend to be the boy or the bear, and it helps them relax in a fun way.

First I will begin by listing the programs/CD's/books that I have purchased from Lite Books. 4 books: A Boy and a Bear, The Affirmation Web, A Boy and a Turtle and The Goodnight Caterpillar plus 5 audio CDs: Indigo Dreams, Indigo Ocean Dreams, Indigo Dreams: Garden of Wellness, Indigo Teen Dreams and Indigo Dreams: Adult Relaxation plus: Children's Stress Awareness Curriculum Designed for Youth Education.
Next I will say "THEY ARE ALL AMAZING!" For 9 years I worked as an advocate for children in a homeless shelter for women and children. I was constantly challenged with finding resources that were short, effective, and held the attention of the children. I was able to find resources but not all in one spot, I had to piece a little of this and a little of that to reach a fully rounded program that worked. The tools that Lori Lite created within each book and each CD offer short, highly effective programs that hold the attention of children. And best of all it is a package deal! You do not have to pull from any other program because the tools that she gives you are all you need. I am now an HHP and use the books and CD's when working with children of any age to simply give them powerful tools that they can use in daily life and hopefully carry into teen and adult hood. In my opinion Lite Books offer the best resources available to the health and wellness of children on the market. Within my own life I use the CD's as a nightly staple within the bedtime process of my children. They have not been able to stay awake long enough to finish even one of the stories on the CD yet. That is how relaxing the CD's are. For myself I have to stay sitting up when tucking them in and listening with them because if I get comfortable I am waking up in the middle of the night still in my kid's room! During daylight hours and when my children are well rested I have worked each session on the CD's with them from beginning to end. Now when they are feeling overwhelmed, frightened, angry etc... I will see them use the techniques they have learned through Loris programs, they move quickly from the negative feeling to a positive approach and positive result.
Lite Books offers professional and friendly customer service, with great shipping time. I am so grateful to have found this amazing resource and look forward to being one of their strongest professional advocates as well as personal customers!

4 out of 5 stars A Boy and a Bear: The Children's Relaxation Book.......2006-04-08

We have several of Lori Lites' book and the Indigo dreams CD, and like them all but this by far my challenging son's favorite. My husband read the story the first few times, and my son did like the story, but did not get much from it. I realized that DH did not really understand the importance of using a very calm, soothing voice (it can be hard to find it with an oppositional child). So, I asked DH to simply flip pages with the CD going. They both got so relaxed they fell asleep. I will say I have some practice at mediation but I am no expert. I took a turn with as I had read the story and thought it would help if we could get him to participate. I started reading it and got so into it that almost forgot I was reading it to someone. Wow! I was floored when he began to spontaneously breath rhythmically with me. He was so centered and peaceful for the next couple of days. It was one of the most rewarding moments I have had with him. Since then, Mommy reads the story to him. Is a cure all? No way, but if, you enjoy meditation and rhythmic breathing, and do the work for yourself in the book, you may just find that your child comes along for the ride.

Book Description

The revolution in psychiatry that began mid-century has led to dramatic advances in the understanding and treatment of manic-depressive illness. No other mental disorder has been the subject of such clinically useful and scientifically productive research. This book is the first to survey this massive body of evidence comprehensively and to assess its meaning for both clinician and scientist. It also vividly portrays the experience of manic-depressive illness from the perspective of patients, their doctors, and researchers, and recounts the torments of some of the great poets and composers whose art was almost certainly enriched, energized, and deepened by the extremes of manic-depressive illness. Drawing on the wisdom of classic psychiatric authors, the book encompasses knowledge about manic-depressive illness as Kraepelin originally defined it. Drs. Goodwin and Jamison's understanding of the illness, gained from their own extensive research and clinical experience, guided their interpretation of the literature. Like Kraepelin, they emphasize the cyclical course of manic-depressive illness and the essential unity of its bipolar and recurrent unipolar forms. Encyclopedic in scope, this volume exhaustively reviews the biological and genetic literature that has dominated the field in recent years. It also surveys the psychological and epidemiological evidence, as well as that pertaining to diagnostic issues, course, and outcome. The authors offer practical guidelines for differential diagnosis and clinical management. The medical treatment of manic and depressive episodes is described, strategies for preventing future episodes are given in detail, and psychotherapeutic issues common in this illness are considered. Special emphasis is given to fostering compliance with medication regimens and treating bipolar patients who abuse drugs and alcohol or who pose a risk of suicide. This book, the product of a decade of work, will be a valuable addition to the libraries of psychiatrists and other physicians, psychologists, clinical social workers, neuroscientists, pharmacologists, and the patients and families who live with manic-depressive illness.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Complete, comprehensive reading for bipolar disorder.......2007-07-30

Although a huge book along with a hefty price tag, this is probably the most up to date information on bipolar disorder (manic depression) available today. It offers a wealth of information that is usable to the clinician as well as the patient. In fact, I think this should be required reading for any clinician who deal with people with this condition.

I strongly urge the purchase of this book esp. for the consumer as self knowledge will be such an asset when communicating with your doctor. This book covers most everything from the most basic to the most complex information to date on this vexing condition. Though I am constantly searching the internet for the most up to date information on bipolar disease, I find the authors of this book to be the leading authorities presently.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Patients.......2007-05-12

This month's long-awaited second edition recently hit the streets, and is well worth the wait. At more than 1,200 pages and with an impressive list of collaborators shedding light on all manner of matters melancholic and manic, the book represents a virtual Manhattan Project on mood disorders.

With our recovery riding on being as smart, if not smarter, than our treating professionals, it pays for patients to read what their clinicians are reading, especially a work of this magnitude. Don't let clinician-speak intimidate you. The authors went to great lengths to organize their subject matter into a meaningful and comprehensive whole, with clear transitions from one topic to the next. A few pages into the text, and one quickly becomes habituated to the polysyllables. Then it's clear sailing.

At $99, sales resistance is understandable. My two cents: You cannot afford NOT to have this book. Each day you struggle with this illness costs you money, already. The cost-benefit is a no-brainer. Stop paying your cable bill, if you have to, and make what could prove to be the best investment of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Technical but Tops.......2006-11-10

I bought this book because someone I know has just been diagnosed with "Soft Bipolar" disorder. This is a "shadow" form of bipolar disorder. While I've dealt with people with bipolar disorder before ( I'm a retired minister), I never heard of "soft bipolar" or "bipolar spectrum" disorder before. This book is the classic text on Bipolar disorder. The only problem is that it is a little old ( about 10 to 15 years old) and discoveries about "soft bipolar" disorder are just coming into the literature now. If you are depressed or diagnosed as depressed, as the person close to me was, you might have soft bipolar disorder. It is much more common than you think. The problem with it is that it needs different medications than regular unipolar disorder does. As an example, if you take one of the SSRI's (such as Prozac or Zoloft) and have soft bipolar, the chances are very good that you will end up with hypomania, which is a mild form of mania. It feels good for a long time--just like alcohol. But at some point in time, it will begin to backfire on you as it did on my friend. She kept getting more and more hyper and angry. Finally, her therapist decided to try out this diagnosis on her. He switched medicines, and it made her mood much more stable. This book would also be excellent for someone who wants to know about bipolar I disorder--manic depressive disorder. The problem with the book is that it is very technical, but everything is there even if it could use a little updating.

5 out of 5 stars Making a difficult study simply amazing!.......2006-07-24

Studying and treating Bipolar Disorder is a difficult trend. Since Kraepelin lessons became available in his book, perhaps "Manic Depressive Illness" is the first to try the almost impossible mission to launch new lights on the matter. And with an amazing approach full of eruditism as well as simplicity and warmth. Untill nowadays, extremely accurate, complete, precise and comprehensive. In little words: in all aspects, amazing!

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK.......2005-12-08

Years ago when I was hospitalized for this illness, this HUGE reference and research book literally got me through. When doctors and my own family didn't know what was going on with me, I knew because the things written in this book were detailing (to a hugely accurate degree)my own experiences. Beyond this, it gives invaluable insight into lesser-known facets of this condition that it's apparent not even some physicians have researched, so in depth. The criticisms of some semi-outdated material are valid...certainly there have been advances in medicine, in particular, in the past 10-15 years. However, the bulk of the information is current in its validity and would not change, over time. This is some intense research. There is simply no other reference book out there that is so detailed and thorough. You must buy this book if you are the least bit interested in learning about this illness. Mental health experts should be required by law to own it. Surely, if you yourself have experienced the effects of bipolar disorder or you know someone in your family or life with it, you will literally not be able to put the book down--it's fascinating! Buy it, coupled with co-author Kay Redfield Jamison's other books (she's a psychiatrist AND a bipolar/manic depressive)--she is refreshingly unashamed and clear about her own life experiences in other works. Don't expect any personal examples in this book, as it's strictly research and data.

Book Description

When a charming polar bear cub climbs into bed one night, she asks her Mama a very important question--one that little "human cubs" often wonder about, too: "Where did I come from?"

As Mama bear tucks her youngest cub under the quilts, she gently, tenderly, and reassuringly communicates the message loving parents everywhere (bears and non-bears alike) want their little ones to hear: "We wanted you very, very much, and we are so very glad because--"God gave us you."

Perfect for bedtime, naptime, storytime or anytime, God Gave Us You provides a valuable opportunity to build children's self-esteem every day and assure each one that he or she truly is a welcomed, precious, and treasured gift from the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever!!.......2007-09-22

This is the BEST BEST BEST book in my opinion. Each page describes how the mama bear and daddy bear wanted a family, and they waited, and her belly grew bigger and they prayed each night for a healty baby, etc.. It's just such a great book. Each page ends with the phrase, "God Gave Us You!" When I read this book to my baby I point up her tummy to her nose each time I saw the 'God Gave us You' part and she always smiles.

I've read the reviews and I'm wondering--is this book appropriate for an adoptive family? My kids were adopted from China, and I know God gave them to us. Is this book specific to birth parents and the birth experience? Thanks for sharing.

5 out of 5 stars A Precious Book.......2007-05-30

This book was right on the mark! It expressed exactly what my husband and I were feeling during our pregnancy and delivery of our daughter. Reading the book made me cry. The story is very special to me. Now, I give it to all my friends that become new parents as a gift!

4 out of 5 stars Heart-Pounding Surprises Threaten Kurt Austin and the NUMA Special Assignments Team.......2007-08-28

I strongly encourage you to listen to the unabridged CD narrated by Scott Brick instead of reading this book. Brick has a wonderful way with voices and accents that give the story depth and suspense you won't find on the printed page.

The book opens in the closing days of the Second World War in East Prussia as a shadowy Austrian escorts a renowned Hungarian scientist away from the advancing Soviets. The Austrian turns out to be a member of the resistance who wants the scientist's knowledge to remain secret from governments that might use that knowledge to create super weapons. This part of the story is as vivid as any great World War II spy novel I've read.

Moving to the present, an enormous container ship finds itself facing unprecedented large waves. How will it survive? You'll find yourself enjoying some of the strong emotions that A Perfect Storm provided.

Kurt Austin is leading a kayak race when he's suddenly attacked by a killer whale. That shouldn't be happening. What's going on?
Next, the Trouts are off taking some sea water samples when they find themselves unexpectedly drawn into a giant whirlpool. The rescue attempt is simply scintillating!

From there, you'll learn a lot about geology and how the Earth creates electromagnetic waves.

Kurt Austin soon perceives that there's a hidden key to the mysterious events and it all seems to be tied up to a beautiful young scientist who has a theory she's trying to prove about the extinction of woolly mammoths. Others get the same idea ahead of Austin. Can he arrive in time to save her? What other surprises await him?

As an interlude, you'll also experience a most unusual Civil War reenactment.

Starting the book with so many interesting incidents sets a high expectation for what's to come. Unfortunately, the book's ending offers a high octane threat to keep you interested . . . but the resolution doesn't satisfy the desire for one more great sequence to cap what is otherwise an extremely interesting thriller.

The book has a very interesting theme about the potential to use resources for good or evil purposes. I encourage you to draw on that theme to think about resources that are almost always used in harmful ways. How could those resources be used instead for almost always helpful results?

Enjoy this whale of a tale or two!

4 out of 5 stars Climate Change and Wooly Mammoths.......2007-08-12

Where else but in the NUMA case files can you learn about giant rogue waves, whirlpools, the magnetic poles of the earth, electromagnetic warfare, and dwarf wooly mammoths all in the same book? I love the odd combinations of topics that we always get in Clive Cussler's books. Plus two characters travel to Los Alamos, New Mexico, a place dear to my heart. Fun!

While this story is a Kurt Austin adventure, I hardly see any difference yet between Kurt and Dirk Pitt. Maybe Kurt will evolve into his own person over time, but we're not there yet. Kurt's sidekick is similarly identical to Dirk's sidekick Al Giordino. So if you don't pay too much attention to names, this story feels just like a Dirk Pitt story.

At 571 oversized novel pages, this book could have been tightened up a little to help keep things moving along.... the story builds slowly, with some plot pauses along the way to a climax that is far too abrupt. It almost feels like the authors ran out of steam or hit a pre-determined page limit and had to wrap things up too quickly. Still enjoyable light reading if you like adventures that are semi-realistic but not as serious as a Tom Clancy book.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-30

I enjoyed reading most of this book, but without giving the ending away, I was very disappointed in the last couple of chapters. If I had all US resources at my disposal, I'd send in a speedy B-1 bomber to take care of a problem much quicker than how the daring Mr. Austin resolved the crisis.

And I agree with a previous reviewer, the characters seemed very flat.

4 out of 5 stars Al Gore won't like this one.......2007-06-08

This story starts out with a new high-tech container ship being creamed by a tsunami and only satellite images revealed what had happened after the ship had inexplicably vanished. This turns out to be a test run of a device that has been built by a cabal who violently oppose globalization of trade and want to upset the earth's magnetic polarity to topple the "elites" who are bringing it about. Unfortunately, they don't know that what they are doing runs a great risk of a more profound shift of the earth's poles and causing cataclysmic destruction. Enter Kurt Austin, the successor to NUMA hero Dirk Pitt, who's attacked by killer whales which are psychologically affected by the deadly device's test run. That's why Austin smells a rat--orcas are not normally that vicious around humans.
Where does Gore come in, you ask? Gore is the chief priest of The New Enviromentalists, who believe that the present-day activities of Americans are the sole cause of global warming (why is it that I mentally hear those last two words in Gore's voice?), and Everybody Knows This because (all together now) "I HATE GEORGE BUSH". Then they drive away in their Lexus or Volvo SUVs, which are safe enough because neither is a product of American industry, and as such are not harmful to the environment. Don't get me started.
What this story has to do with that is that scientists have found that "polar shift" occurs naturally every few eons or so, and that runs counter to New Environmental belief that modern man is the one and only potential cause of profound climatic change. All that the Bad Guys in this story are doing is artificially trying to trigger something that's going to happen anyway in several millennia.
It's taken me a while to get used to this Next Generation NUMA series, but Cussler's basic premise is that Dirk Pitt would age in the real world and he does not want to handle his work in the same way that creators of James Bond fiction keep 007 young forever. Otherwise, a forever-young Superman would by now be visting Lois Lane in a senior care facility, Inspector Henderson would by now be deceased after retirng as Chief of the Metropolis Police, and Jimmy Olsen would be about ready to throw in his papers as longtime editor of the Daily Planet. After all, a lot of miles have rolled by on the old NUMA odometer since Pitt raised the Titanic. It's a lot more valid than relying entirely on passing the torch to Dirk Pitt jr. and his Baywatch Babe of a sister Summer. In fact, the inclusion of Paul Kemprecos as Cussler's writing partner has given NUMA fiction a Bond-flick-in-print feel, with lots of action and vehicular pursuit scenes. There's even a scene where Austin touches base with his boss Dirk and borrows one of his famous antique cars for the best chase scene. Give it a try, and then you might want to go back and catch up on the earlier five volumes.

4 out of 5 stars running out of ideas?.......2007-06-06

Cussler has the format down but I wonder if the old master is running out of ideas. I had to rewrite my novel AMRA because of Atlantis Found. Well everything turned out okay.

5 out of 5 stars Bipolar for Dummies.......2007-08-18

This is the best book I have read on bipolar.

I have always had doubts about my diagnosis of being bipolar, but after reading this book I feel much better about the effects the disease has had on me. Not only did the book confirm my suspicions about my disease, but it gave me ways to counteract some of the feelings I have/had.

I have suggested that my wife read the book (when I am finished) as it is equally directed to your support team as it is to the patient.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-07-30

This gave insight into the bipolar thinkng and help for me to understand it better and deal with it in others.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2007-06-09

This is, by far, the best book on understanding Bipolar Disorder--that is, if you can get past the "dummies" label. It is a "must read" for people who have been diagnosed and for anyone who knows or loves someone with the disorder. It helps identify stressors and triggers, teaches how to take control of your treatment, how to select a mental health specialist, how to maintain mood stability, how to make positive lifestyle changes and gives you medication and other treatment options. All of this and with a dash of humor! I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Great overall view of bipolar disorder.......2007-03-11

This book contains the basics of it all. Nothing to indept mostly if your in a real crisis. But it does give you a little understanding of ssi which a lot of books look over. I would definitfly recommend this book to another.

Melding superb research and the extraordinary expedition photography of Frank Hurley, The Endurance by Caroline Alexander is a stunning work of history, adventure, and art which chronicles "one of the greatest epics of survival in the annals of exploration." Setting sail as World War I broke out in Europe, the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, led by renowned polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, hoped to become the first to cross the Antarctic continent. But their ship, Endurance, was trapped in the drifting pack ice, eventually to splinter, leaving the expedition stranded on floes--a situation that seemed "not merely desperate but impossible."

Most skillfully Alexander constructs the expedition's character through its personalities--the cast of veteran explorers, scientists, and crew--with aid from many previously unavailable journals and documents. We learn, for instance, that carpenter and shipwright Henry McNish, or "Chippy," was "neither sweet-tempered nor tolerant," and that Mrs. Chippy, his cat, was "full of character." Such firsthand descriptions, paired with 170 of Frank Hurley's intimate photographs, which are comprehensively assembled here for the first time, penetrate the hulls of the Endurance and these tough men. The account successfully reveals the seldom-seen domestic world of expedition life--the singsongs, feasts, lectures, camaraderie--so that when the hardships set in, we know these people beyond the stereotypical guise of mere explorers and long for their safety.

Alexander reveals Shackleton as an inspiring optimist, "a leader who put his men first." Throughout the grueling ordeal, Shackleton and his men show what endurance and greatness are all about. The Endurance is a most intimate portrait of an expedition and of survival. Readers will possess a newfound respect for these daring souls, know better their unthinkable toil and half-forgotten realm of glory. --Byron Ricks

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Narrators Michael Tezla and Martin Ruben join forces to read Caroline Alexander's extraordinary account of Sir Ernest Shackleton's improbable Antarctic adventure. Tezla narrates the text while Ruben reads diary entries from the ship's crewmembers, employing a variety of native accents. The approach effectively divides the book into listener-friendly chunks, but at times, keeping track of all 27 crewmen requires the fortitude of the explorers themselves. Tezla describes the ice and snow with a haunting beauty but manages maintain the tension throughout, while Ruben injects character and humor into his various vocal interpretations. Book Description

In August 1914, days before the outbreak of the First World War, the renowned explorer Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven set sail for the South Atlantic in pursuit of the last unclaimed prize in the history of exploration: the first crossing on foot of the Antarctic continent. Weaving a treacherous path through the freezing Weddell Sea, they had come within eighty-five miles of their destination when their ship, Endurance, was trapped fast in the ice pack. Soon the ship was crushed like matchwood, leaving the crew stranded on the floes. Their ordeal would last for twenty months, and they would make two near-fatal attempts to escape by open boat before their final rescue.

Drawing upon previously unavailable sources, Caroline Alexander gives us a riveting account of Shackleton's expedition--one of history's greatest epics of survival. And she presents the astonishing work of Frank Hurley, the Australian photographer whose visual record of the adventure has never before been published comprehensively. Together, text and image re-create the terrible beauty of Antarctica, the awful destruction of the ship, and the crew's heroic daily struggle to stay alive, a miracle achieved largely through Shackleton's inspiring leadership.

The survival of Hurley's remarkable images is scarcely less miraculous: The original glass plate negatives, from which most of the book's illustrations are superbly reproduced, were stored in hermetically sealed cannisters that survived months on the ice floes, a week in an open boat on the polar seas, and several more months buried in the snows of a rocky outcrop called Elephant Island. Finally Hurley was forced to abandon his professional equipment; he captured some of the most unforgettable images of the struggle with a pocket camera and three rolls of Kodak film.

Published in conjunction with the American Museum of Natural History's landmark exhibition on Shackleton's journey, The Endurance thrillingly recounts one of the last great adventures in the Heroic Age of exploration--perhaps the greatest of them all.

This book is simply outstanding. A must read for all whould-be-adventurers!
The photos are right up there with Ansel Adams, but with REAL drama.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful pictures.......2007-08-26

There are more complete books out there detailing what Shackleton and his men went through on their Antarctic exploration, and after viewing the haunting, beautiful and often other-worldly photographs presented in this book, I think you will want to further explore this story.

This book is fine in what it offers, giving a good summary of those events, without getting into some of the mind numbing list of stores etc. in the more detailed books, but the photographs are what makes this a special book - one to leave out on the coffee table and pick up on a hot summer day and leaf through and feel the temperature drop eighty degrees.

In the summer of 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton set off aboard the Endurance bound for the South Atlantic. The goal of his expedition was to cross the Antarctic overland, but more than a year later, and still half a continent away from the intended base, the Endurance was trapped in ice and eventually was crushed. For five months Shackleton and his crew survived on drifting ice packs in one of the most savage regions of the world before they were finally able to set sail again in one of the ship's lifeboats. Alfred Lansing's Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage is a white-knuckle account of this astounding odyssey.

Through the diaries of team members and interviews with survivors, Lansing reconstructs the months of terror and hardship the Endurance crew suffered. In October of 1915, there "were no helicopters, no Weasels, no Sno-Cats, no suitable planes. Thus their plight was naked and terrifying in its simplicity. If they were to get out--they had to get themselves out." How Shackleton did indeed get them out without the loss of a single life is at the heart of Lansing's magnificent true-life adventure tale.

Book Description

The astonishing saga of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton's survival for over a year on the ice-bound Antarctic seas, as Time magazine put it, "defined heroism." Alfred Lansing's scrupulously researched and brilliantly narrated book -- with over 200,000 copies sold -- has long been acknowledged as the definitive account of the Endurance's fateful trip. To write their authoritative story, Lansing consulted with ten of the surviving members and gained access to diaries and personal accounts by eight others. The resulting book has all the immediacy of a first-hand account, expanded with maps and illustrations especially for this edition.

This is an amazing story of leadership, and man's ability to persevere under extraordinary circumstances. It is really unbelievable. I was staggered by the odds these men overcame and their determination to press on. The book is well written and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing story.........2007-05-19

This is a great book that will make you feel as though any hardship you have ever encountered is really not so bad when you think about what these men endured. Imagine being cold, wet, hungry, tired for basically 2 years while in the back of your mind you know that the chances of ever seeing the civilized world is remote at best. These men handled it well. Very good historical account written based on interviews, historical accounts, and actual diaries of the men on the journey.

5 out of 5 stars Finest adventure book ever written.......2007-04-21

I am working my way through the top 100 Adventure Books of all time. This one is, so far, the best. It is the concatenation of several adventure books, since almost every type of mishap and obstacle is encountered. Shackleton must go down as a true hero, as well as his crew. The version of the book with the glossies in the middle was captivating... I spent a good bit of time staring at the remarkable pictures. The story of how those film plates survived this oddysey is, in itself, remarkable.

A good adventure would be ruined by poor writing. Lansing is superb and does credit to this story.

This story could never be made into the movie because it would be considered too "far-fetched" to be believable. Note that there is a documentary DVD that (in a nutshell) describes some of the story, as well as lets you see an interesting reunion of the Endurance crew's children. Try to get this video right after you read the book.

5 out of 5 stars Antarctic Travelogue.......2007-04-10

This true story of Ernest Shackleton's journey to the Antarctic in 1915 is a great preview to a trip to the White Continent. This adventure story will make you thankful for what you have.

5 out of 5 stars Shackleton's Incredible Voyage.......2007-03-12

Excellent book, technical, and lots of good visuals. The book would be good to use with upper middle school and high school social studies classes accompanying with the film.

Before Everest, there was Annapurna. Maurice Herzog led an expedition of French climbers to the summit of this 26,000-foot Himalayan peak in 1950. At the time of the assault, it was the highest mountain ever climbed, a remarkable feat in itself made all the more remarkable by the fact that it had never previously been charted. Herzog and his team not only had to climb the darn thing, they had to find the route. As riveting as the tale of the ascent remains nearly half a century later, the story of the descent through virtually unsurvivable--think avalanche and frostbite, for starters--conditions is unforgettable. Herzog's masterful account, finally back in print, is a monument of courage and spirit, an epic adventure excitingly told.

Book Description

In 1950, no mountain higher than 8,000 meters had ever been climbed. Maurice Herzog and other members of the French Alpine Club had resolved to try. Their goal was a 26,493-foot Himalayan peak called Annapurna. But unlike other climbs, which draw on the experience of prior reconnaissance, the routes up Annapurna had never been analyzed before. Herzog and his team had to locate the mountain using sketchy, crude maps, pick out a single, untried route, and go for the summit. Annapurna is the unforgettable account of this dramatic and heroic climb, and of its harrowing aftermath. Although Herzog and his comrade Louis Lachenal reached the mountain's summit, their descent was a nightmare of frostbite, snow blindness, and near death. With grit and courage manifest on every page, Herzog's narrative is one of the great mountain-adventure stories of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Climbed But Not Conquered.......2006-12-06

Herzog provides a detailed perspective of the famed Annapurna climb that has inspired numerous high altitude and arm chair climbers.

Suffering frostbite and unimaginable suffering, Herzog has made a statement, worth reading in his epic account. No other sport has it's center pieces so open in sharing their innermost feelings.

The b/w photos were relatively scare and of only fair quality.

4 out of 5 stars Great story, flawed method........2006-01-26

Reading the other reviews of this book, I'm reminded of a quote from one of my favorite, although little known Sean Connery movies, where he plays an Arab pirate. At one point Connery says to his second in command: "It is good." "What is good?", replies the other man. "It is good to know where we are going," answers Connery. Alas, Herzog and his men didn't know where they were going, and spent a month wandering around looking. It would have been good to send out an initial recon group to find the mountain before they started out. Or, to paraphrase an english adventurer, "to lose a pack animal is unfortunate; to lose an entire mountain seems downright careless."

4 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story of Incredible Human Endurance.......2005-12-07

Wow! This is one of those real life adventure stories that has you wondering how much more the people can endure before they collapse and die. These guys climbed one of the world's most difficult mountains with old climbing technology. What they lacked in modern equipment, they made up for with strength and fitness. The more I read about mountaineering, the more I agree that it is 75% mental and 25% physical. Being in the best physical condition possible definitely gives you a better opportunity for success on high ground. If you liked this book, I encourage you to read my book "Rocky Mountain Adventure Collection". Best wishes on your adventures in life!

5 out of 5 stars Mountaineering Classic.......2005-04-08

A marvellous book. Remarkably written, griping, and inspiring. A must for all mountaineers.

4 out of 5 stars Good Adventure Reading.......2005-01-31

First and foremost, the topic of the book is of historical significance in the world of climbing, so it's a "must read" if you are into that sort of thing. If you aren't, it's still a great adventure read. Well worth the time. I'm glad I read it and would recommend it to people who enjoy outdoor adventures.

The text itself is written well, flows nicely, and is generally an easy read. I also found it to have a good balance between the characters emotions, the activity of the climb, and local color and flavor.

Something I found interesting was the attitude of Herzog. Granted, this was written in the 50's, but it was intersting to see his attitudes towards the local people. He certainly had a "I'm better than you" attitude towards the local Porters and Sherpas. He also displayed a lot of attitude towards other members of his expedition. At one moment he would be very condescending and critical, then a few pages later he would be singing their praises.

I wish the book had a bigger glossary than it does. I frequently found myself going to the glossary to look up the meaning of a word that was used, and didn't find it. Here, I'm talking about "climbing lingo" and words and phrases that Herzog uses that are relative to the language of the locals in Tibet and India.

I also didn't care for the placement of the photographs. They often didn't follow the text. A picture could preceed or follow the pertinent text by 100 pages, which made for a lot of "page flipping". It would be helpful to familiarize yourself with the photographs before reading the text, so that you know when to go back and find a specific photo.

Outside of this book, I've learned that there is a lot of controversy over what "really" happened and Herzog's attitude and motivations. If you read this book, keep in mind that this isn't necessarily what actually happened, but more of an account of what Herzog wanted you to know. Take most of it with a grain of salt, and do some additional research to get the full picture.

Also, understand that this climb was a "first" at that height, and was using technologies and understanding of altitude at that time. A reader with current climbing knowledge will often read a passage and think to himself "No Kidding, Dummy!", but we know that hindsight is 20/20. Their accomplishment is all the more exciting knowing that things we know and understand today, were unknown to them... and don't forget, they didn't have the high tech equipment that todays climbers have.
