3 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointed.......2007-09-23

I was disappointed in Hannah and Jonas' "personalities" - they didn't ring true from previous books, neither did the other sisters' actions. The only one truly believable was the Russian and Jackson. I still enjoyed the book, but nearly as much as her other books.

5 out of 5 stars Romance with a Paranormal twist.......2007-09-21

once again Christine Feehan out does her self with this tale of a sister of 7 witches that takes you on an adventure that is not soon forgoten.. a must read...

3 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointed .......2007-09-17

I had to see what happened to the next sister but, was disappointed in the story. The well known character of Jonas seemed to be a totally different person than he was in the rest of the series. I found his description and actions in this book to be totally different than what I have grown to see and think of him as. That really distracted me from the story as I read it. Also, as much as I love Christine Feehan's books her recent ones have seemed to lack something that I just can't put my finger on. I'm sure when the next Drake sisters book comes out I'll get it but, I will have lowered expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Jonas and Hannah-Together Forever.......2007-09-15

I loved this book! I bought and read it all in one afternoon/evening! The only thing I am going to say is that I found some of the reviews a bit shocking...
One by "Anonymous" titled 'Still good, but a bit tedious'-If you're going to dis Christine Feehan's novels you can't even leave a nickname-instead of -Anonymous-?!
Another two reviews one by "30 Book a month reader" titled 'Summarize' and one by "Reader" titled 'A huge disappointment' Why didn't you take the books and give them to your local library? Why not sell them, exchange them? Our landfills are big enough as it is and not only that...I don't know about any of you readers, but with the economy the way it is I don't have money to throw in the garbage!
Anyhow back to the review...
This was one of the most beautiful love stories, making me laugh, cry and terrified all at the same time. This is what true romance is all about-the all too human way that people who truly love each other act. This is what family is all about people-admitting your mistakes when you're wrong-learning to see yourself as you truly are, flaws and all. I felt Safe Harbor was jam packed with romance, action, suspense, and tenderness. Maybe some feel that Jonas and Hannah are too human and their feelings and emotions hit all too close to home because all of us can relate to them in some way. Remember it takes all kinds to make the world. Keep up the good work Christine! I'm look forward to Ilya and Joley's book and Jackson and Elle's!

5 out of 5 stars Safe Harbor (Drake Sisters - Book 5) by Christine Feehan.......2007-09-06

Wow! A totally satisfying story of Hannah Drake and Jonas Harrington. Feehan alludes to problems Hannah has had while growing up, but doesn't really pinpoint why Hannah is sooooo shy. Is it because of her empathic senses that she needed to shut herself, mentally, emotionally, and physically, away from others? Wasn't there anyone --- besides Jonas and her family --- who could understand her anguish? Couldn't her aunts, all gifted women, help her to cope by teaching her ways to control her abilities? I would have liked to have read a little bit more about Hannah's youth and how her past lead to her profession as a model. There were little snatches from Hannah's past alluding to her shyness, but not a clear picture of the "why."
Jonas' character has been developed through all of the previous books. He's loud in his protectiveness, bossy, a take charge kind of guy; all necessary attributes for a cop. And, to keep himself in the forefront of Hannah's thoughts, he goads, needles, and verbally jabs at her. How could you not love Jonas? He's a manly man with a gooey heart which, of course, gets him into trouble at the wrong times and forces the "sisters" to rescue him time, and time again.
Safe Harbor is a very satisfying book and makes one eager for the next.

5 out of 5 stars Romance is alive.......2007-10-08

When I read the reviews for this book I decided that I would purchase it. I also, at the same time, purchased the rest of the books in this particular series (and some of her others too). I AM HOOKED!

The sexual tension between the characters is quite strong. As the plot unfolds the reader is drawn more and more into the story, hoping that Reese, the "strong and silent type" and Dr Tory King, the wounded but strongminded town doctor, will realize who they are to each other, and to the town.

I loved this book, and couldn't put it down. You will too.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-05-14

This book was very good. After reading it I purchased the next three books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars 4 hours.......2007-04-01

I bought 10 books by Radclyffe and spent about 4 hours turning pages on each one. I suppose if I could turn the pages faster I would have cut the time by half. The price for four hours of being pulled into Maine, some hospital or other place with women hurt by life who find the warmth again is priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Romance in Provincetown.......2006-05-04

Radclyffe's first book introduces us to Reese Conlon - the newly hired deputy sheriff; Tory King - the town's only doctor; and, of course, Provincetown - the legendary gay mecca. Tory and Reese have a lot in common - both are insulated from others, both are workaholics, both are dedicated to their professions. But they are quite different from one another as well - Tory knows why she's insulated herself whereas Reese has never learned to be with others.

Radclyffe is a fresh voice in the lesbian fiction genre. She writes about strong women overcoming seeming insurmountable difference to be with one another, she writes about trust and she writes about love. Her love scenes are graphic but gentle and sweet and sh never loses sight of the intensity of new love nor of her story.

Beware though. If you start reading Radclyffe, you will find yourself ordering everything the woman has written. Be prepared to stay up long after you should have turned the light off just to finish one more chapter. It is best to read the series books - the Honor series, the Justice series and the Provincetown books - in order so you understand where the characters started and why they do what they do.

5 out of 5 stars Radclyffe's Most Incredible Romance Ever.......2006-04-03

I own and have read everything Radclyffe has published. I love her stuff and anxiously await each new release.

'Safe Harbor' is her most erotic, heart-wrenching story yet. The reader can't help but fall in love with Reese and Tori, and to subsequently await their coming together.

Reese, raised by her Marine father in a very regimented household and kept away from her lesbian mother as a teen, leaves active duty to become a deputy sheriff in Provincetown, MA. Because of the town's large gay population and her androgynous looks (like a cross between a young Gregory Peck and k.d. lang), everyone assumes Reese is a lesbian. However, in her early thirties, Reese has never had a relationship of any sort and isn't sure herself.

Tori, a gifted physician and former Olympic contender, is the town doctor. She injured her leg just before the Olympics and ruined her chances of competing. Her former lover, a woman Tori planned to spend a lifetime with, cheated on Tori and left her heartbroken three years prior to Reese's appearance.

Radclyffe skillfully takes these two women - one emotionally immature, and one emotionally barren - and creates a painfully erotic and emotional tale. Evidenced by the two sequels that have already been written, she leaves the story open for a proliferation of story lines.

Your personal collection will not be complete without this book and its sequels.

Book Description

Readers across the country have embraced the moving, magical novels of Luanne Rice, among them her acclaimed bestsellers Firefly Beach, Follow the Stars Home, and Cloud Nine.

The New York Times Book Review has called Rice's work "exciting, emotional, terrific," and praises her "rare combination of realism and romance." Now from this gifted writer comes a new novel -- the story of two generations of sisters and the indelible bonds among them, set on the timeless New England coastline she has made her own.

Dana Underhill's artistic gift has led her all over the world in search of new oceanscapes. Her breathtaking underwater canvases evoke all the beauty and romance of the seas she and her beloved sister, Lily, have sailed since childhood. But when a shattering event takes Lily from her forever, Dana must leave her nomadic artist's life for the salt marshes and tidal creeks of her childhood home at Hubbard's Point, Connecticut, to become a mother to Lily's two young daughters, Quinn and Allie.

Twelve-year-old Quinn may be Dana's toughest challenge. With a mass of wiry braids as uncontrollable as she is, Quinn hides her secret diary in a remote cove and clings fiercely to private mementos of her parents. Already an expert sailor herself, Quinn is convinced their deaths at sea were no accident. Dana, too, is troubled by the puzzle of what could have gone so terribly wrong on that clear, moonlit night. Support comes to Dana with the unexpected reappearance of an old friend, marine biologist Sam Trevor, whom readers will remember from Firefly Beach. When Sam was eight years old, Dana taught him to sail and unlocked his dreams of the undersea world. Now he's a tall, laughing-eyed pro, researching dolphins. And he's been in love with Dana for all the years that have passed between them.

Dana cannot begin to contemplate opening her heart again, especially now, especially to a man she can only allow herself to see as a young student. But together, she and Sam begin to discover that Hubbard's Point is the center of endless mysteries, and that many of the answers lie in the blue-purple depths that surge through Dana's paintings and into all of their lives, revealing the transcendence of love even in the face of grief and death. Haunting and powerful, Safe Harbor is an unforgettable story of family bonds, love lost and found, and of a painter's unfolding vision of herself, as an artist -- and as a woman.

5 out of 5 stars A PERFECT BEACH READ.......2007-02-24

I really liked this book, it's a wonderful story about Dana who loses her sister and her brother in law in a boating accident plus she has taken on a huge responsibility to care for her two nieces. She falls for Sam a man who searches for her sister's boat to search for clues. To deal with her sister's grief she turns to painting again. I brought this book to Misquamicut Beach last year and it's a great book. I couldn't put it down. This is the second book that I read my Ms. Rice. I also loved True Blue.

3 out of 5 stars It's An Okay Read..........2006-07-14

I liked this book, but it wasn't great. I do love the unusal way the two lead adult character's get together and it was nice to experience a patient, loving, and understanding male hero. The turmoil within the children was a nice change as well. In my opinion there were no real dynamics with this book, it slowly went along, ending in a good place.

Once again, it was a nice read just nothing very exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Safe Harbour.......2006-07-08

I have read several Rice books including older ones and most recent ones. I loved Save Harbour I believe most of all the ones I have
read including Summer of Roses which was up until Save Harbour my
favorite.

2 out of 5 stars Too sentimental..........2006-04-28

I find Luanne Rice's writing to be a bit too sentimental but have enjoyed some of her other books because the plots were interesting. The premise for "Safe Harbor" has potential but I'm finding the book is unable to draw me in. It is pages and pages and pages of emotions and feelings with little story. I'm bored and think I will be unable to finish reading the book, moving on to something else.

3 out of 5 stars Another emotional story by Luanne Rice.......2005-12-29

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

Dana Underhill has just returned to Connecticut from years abroad in Paris. She is reeling from her recent divorce and now has to deal with the grief of losing her sister as well. She returns, planning to just take her two nieces back to Paris, but things have a way or turning out different than expected. Allie, the younger of the two children is taking everything in stride and working through her grief pretty well. The older of the two, Quinn is stubborn and resentful over everything, and is convinced there is more to the death of her parents then has been revealed.

Sam Trevor is an old friend of Dana who also has recently returned to town. He's always had feelings for her, even as a young boy when Dana was his sailing instructor. As he renews his friendship and makes plans with Quinn to recover her parents' sailboat, his bond to Dana grows stronger, resulting in a new love.

With Safe Harbor, once again Luanne Rice proves her talent for writing heart wrenching stories full of strong emotion and tender love. The author is skilled at representing all kinds of relationships in her stories and this one is no different. Readers will especially be drawn into Quinn's story, feeling her pain, her anger, her frustration at losing her parents. She is the rebellious preteen, but by the end of the story her behavior will be completely understood.

There were a couple flaws in the story though. The ending to the book was a bit too perfect, too predictable for readers to fully enjoy it. Also, the relationship between Dana and Sam, though well developed was a little too unbelievable. As much as one can understand and enjoy relationships between a woman and a younger man, there seemed to be too much of an age difference for this reader to totally buy it. Granted the abridged version of the novel was listened too, no actual numbers were given to show what the age gap was, but there was definitely the feeling that there was a significant difference in ages, too much possibly for some to find it believable.

Book Description

On October 8, 2001, the 120-foot luxury live-aboard dive yachts Wave Dancer and Aggressor III, both carrying members of the Richmond Dive Club, were secured to a concrete dock in southern Belize when Hurricane Iris struck. The last boat to slip into the harbor for safety, the Wave Dancer, stuck out halfway into the channel, unable to find more room at the crowded dock. The category four hurricane, with winds of 140 mph and a storm surge of fourteen feet, ripped the Wave Dancer from its cleats, tossing it like a toy across the lagoon. When the storm subsided an hour later, 20 of the boat’s 28 occupants were dead. The investigation into the tragedy — the worst in the history of recreational diving — revealed that the boat’s owner and captain had ignored storm warnings and needlessly endangered the lives of their passengers and crew.

In a vivid indictment of maritime irresponsibility, author Joe Burnworth — a passenger on the Aggressor III — dramatically recounts the events leading up to the Wave Dancer's capsizing, the rescue and recovery attempts, and the devastating aftermath.

4 out of 5 stars No Safe Harbor.......2007-10-10

I read this book after having been on the Belize Aggressor Aug 2007, which was the boat that didn't capsize. It's a fascinating book, particularly if you've either been on one of the boats or are planning to be. One of the misconceptions I've seen in various writings is when a particular liveaboard is called a 'party' boat - I've been on many liveaboards and none of them have been party boats. After getting up at 6:00am everyday and doing a day's worth of diving, everyone generally goes to bed at a reasonable hour in order to be well rested for the next day. Who wants to be hungover when you've paid good money to dive in these exotic locations? If by chance, a boat becomes a 'party' boat, its because that week's charter is more interested in drinking than diving, and that hasn't been my experience on liveaboards. People go on liveaboards because they want to immerse themselves in scuba diving and the wonderful world that opens up to them below the ocean's surface.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2007-10-10

As a diving aficionado, I remember hearing about the Wavedancer tragedy when it occurred, but never knew the background and details surrounding the event. I stumbled upon this book by accident, bought it on a whim (and based on Theresa Mars's review) and am glad I did.

Joe Burnworth has created a vivid and interesting account of an event that robbed us of so many good people, but the story is faithful to who they were and their lives, although tragically cut short.

It was a page-turner, and one I found almost impossible to put down once I got going. I even held off on another book I had begun reading several weeks earlier because No Safe Harbor was so compelling in its scope.

Although I knew none of the members of the Richmond Diving Club and very little about the events other than what I had seen on the news six years ago, I came away with a much deeper appreciation for what happened and how dangerous and deadly mother nature can be.

4 out of 5 stars When good diving goes bad..........2007-06-27

I've been on the boat that is the subject of this book, and the one that has replaced it. The author did a good job of capturing the experience of live aboard dving. Passages vividly recalled my time on both boats.

It was a quick, engrossing read that was for the most part I enjoyed. I did dread turing the page and seeing another page long doubled spaced weather report. I had questions as to HOW this tragedy occured, this book answered all my questions. All in all a worthwhile read for the divers among us...

4 out of 5 stars Interesting account of a dive vacation gone horribly wrong.......2007-04-09

As I diver, I found this book riveting. It is a quick read and an interesting depiction of the final events surrounding the Wave Dancer dive ship caught in a hurricane.

5 out of 5 stars The Tragedy of Wave Dancer.......2007-03-19

I gave this book as a present to my son, a former Scuba diver who described the book as "a major tragedy and a rivetting read".

Book Description

The latest techniques for preserving family wealth and legally avoiding personal liability in the operation of a small business are provided in this guide. Intended for the small business owner, the strategies discussed are equally effective in larger businesses. Taken together, these strategies provide a multilayered approach to asset protection, offering redundant protection and often presenting an insurmountable barrier to creditors. Topics covered include the types of property that are exempt from bankruptcy and legal judgments; and methods for using insurance, asset transfers, and asset protection trusts as a second level of defense. The strategies detailed in this book have been proven effective by actual court cases. Alternatives are contrasted and compared in terms of costs, complexity, and effectiveness, affording owners the opportunity to choose approaches based on their needs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Intro to Asset Protection.......2005-03-02

This book is probably the best entry level guide to asset protection.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for general public.......2004-07-17

I read through the book and learned a lot about various aspects of asset protection. This book is focused on small business, as it says, and it does an excellent job when discussing various 'tools'. There are many great asset protection 'tools' out there, but what works for you is all you need to care about, and this books does just that to small business owners.

The book starts with understanding your position to creditors (private and gov't). Then, it helps you get to know one tool after another in different situations you may be in, and each chapter is just in great details including pro and cons, typical scenarios, and Smart Plan (I love these).

Of course, no one is perfect. What I wish to see from this book, and many other books in this topic, is the overall picture of a business entity model/structure a person/business should have. For instance, it'll be much more helpful if the author include 2 or 3 smart business structures one should/could have and provide explanation of how each model works. The model should utilize, let's say, LLC, Living Trust, children's Trust... altogether to build a strong asset protection structure for a business and its business owners. It's true that the models may not totally work for each indiv., but it does give great understanding of how/why it's structured the way it is.

Overall, the book is great and highly recommended to general public readers who, like me, is not a lawyer or pro in this area. Further legal assitance is still recommended, but at least readers get good understanding when designing their own plan.

5 out of 5 stars What every small to large-sized business owner needs !!.......2003-06-21

It's clear that the author has years of experience in protecting business owners' hard-earned assets. The author's asset protection strategies range from simple and inexpensive to complex and costly. This really makes the book suitable for managers of large corporations as well as small business owners.

At 500 pages, the book is detailed and comprehensive, but easy to read. Who would have known that in many states taking out a second mortgage on a house could make it exempt from attachment, while in other states, just the opposite approach, i.e., paying off the first mortgage, is what's required? Or that an IRA shields assets from the claims of creditors in many states and thus provides much more than a tax shelter, while in other states an ERISA-qualified 401(k) plan is a better choice? The author sorts all of this out in an authoritative but easy to read guide. Many readers will wish that they had this book years ago before financial problems developed. But, even there the author has strategies that can help avert a disaster.

The content, layout and design of this book make it not only indispensable, but actually fun to read. The tips, warnings and anectdotes are terrific. Attorney Misenti obviously has wide ranging experience in this field and his writing style is superb.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Wealth Preservation Guide.......2003-05-29

This is the ultimate guide to wealth building and wealth preservation. I've read other guides on forming an LLC or a corporation, but I never realized how woefully inadequate those other guides were before I purchased this book. As the author points out, many business owners form an LLC or a corporation without understanding how to strategically fund the entity, avoid exceptions to limited liability, or transfer assets to exempt categories, all of which are necessary if financial wealth is to be preserved in the face of lawsuits or bankruptcy. This guides teaches how to do all of that, and more.

The addition of actual cases, state asset exemption lists, and business forms for LLC's, makes this one of the best books of its kind that I've seen. Apparently this is one book in a series from the publisher that has received a lot of acclaim. ...

I've read that small business and entrepreneurs lead the country out of a recession. This guide could not be more timely. Don't start a business or expand your business without buying this book. This guide should be in the library of every business owner and well used. This really is the best, and most comprehensive asset protection guide on the market for small business owners, corporate mangers, and individuals interested in preserving their wealth.

I like the fact that the author proves that, when his asset protection strategies are put into place before financial problems arise, they are virtually beyond challenge, even to the extent of preserving an individual's entire wealth against the most significant of claims. I found it amazing that, with the right planning, millionaires can emerge from a major lawsuit or bankruptcy with no loss at all! Want to save a million dollars or all of the assets you have worked hard to create? Buy this book NOW and put a comprehensive asset protection plan in place based on the author's recommendations.

    Book Description

From its beginning in 1939, the Window Shop of Cambridge, Massachusetts, provided a safe harbor for hundreds of German and Austrian refugees who fled from Hitler to America. It was founded by concerned Cambridge residents who were guided only by their desire to help the refugees. Together they created a nonprofit enterprise that was unparalleled in its success and influence.

"By the time the Window Shop moved to 56 Brattle Street in 1947, it had become a favorite haunt for the diverse community of European intellectuals who fled to Cambridge, such as architect Walter Gropius. The continental food and atmosphere provided a welcome link to their past. 'It makes people feel at home to find here in Cambridge goodies they had.in their childhood,' Alice Broch told the Christian Science Monitor in 1955."
-The Boston Globe, Jan. 4, 1995

"I shall never be at a loss where to take one of my grandchildren for a delightful meal if I find myself in Cambridge. So many happy faces greeted me there-these women who had been in concentration camps or had spent long years waiting to find themselves able to begin life again in a new country, and now actually at work helping their husbands or their children to start again. You are glad you live in an America which can be a land of hope."

    Book Description

Elizabeth Lochtefeld was a glowing, charismatic woman who’d built a million-dollar fortune in New York City before retiring to the fashionable island of Nantucket. At age forty-four, she had everything in life except the one thing she wanted most: true love. When she met thirty-seven year-old Thomas E. Toolan III, a handsome Wall Street ace, she thought she finally found Mr. Right. She was dead wrong.

Behind Tom’s Golden Boy façade was a man with a dark history of erratic behavior—a man given to violent mood swings, who’d lost his job after trying to steal an $80,000 Roman bust from a Park Avenue antiques show…and that was just the beginning of his vicious downward spiral. Two days after putting an end to the affair, Beth disappeared, never to be seen alive again….

4 out of 5 stars She was just looking for a safe harbor!.......2007-08-25

The life story of Beth Lochtenfield (I know that I misspelled) was just about ideal and even perfect except she wanted to settle down, marry and have children like her siblings. Sadly, it never happened. The man in her life, Toolan, killed her brutally in lovely Nantucket, Massachusetts which she considered to be her sanctuary from the cruel world of men. I can relate to her desperation and the mistakes and signs that she missed along the way about Toolan. Beth was smart about a lot of things but not about men. When she realized it was too late, it was too late for her life. Beth's short life was filled with lots of things but the right man and Toolan was deeply troubled from the moment he met her only she was equally desperate to settle down and marry. Sadly, she could not have picked a worst choice than Toolan. This book could be useful to a lot of women out there including myself that finding the right man is not always the end all and be all of life. Beth's tragic and senseless murder was just that a tragedy. She was successful in business, with a loving family of siblings, nieces, and nephews, and parents, and she had lots of friends. My favorite photo in the book is one with her at a friend's wedding. I thought that it could have been her wedding. Beth's life was ideal but incomplete without that special someone to share it with her. Maybe he was really just around the corner or not there at all, somebody once said that you have to be complete first before finding a mate. This book sends the message that finding a mate may end in tragedy after all. The pressure for single women like myself and my sister and others to find a husband is almost painful to explain anymore to anybody else. Beth was one of those people who just wanted that right man and it's a myth because happiness and true love is almost impossible to find in our world and even in Beth's world where status, money, wealth, and prominence in society mattered so much more to Toolan. The book came out too soon in my opinion because the trial or the sentence hasn't begun.

    5 out of 5 stars An excellent fictionalization of a star-crossed relationship.......2007-07-07

Brian McDonald's Safe Harbor: A Murder In Nantucket provides the backgrounds of the victim, a successful entrepreneurial woman in her mid-forties who was aware of the ticking of her biological clock, and of the defendant, a financial professional with a history of substance abuse, difficulties at work, and previous brushes with the law. The work was published well before the trial, which took place on Nantucket Island between June 4 and June 21, 2007, and which resulted in a verdict after comparatively brief deliberation of guilty of both first-degree murder with extreme cruelty and assault with a deadly weapon as well as immediate sentences of, respectively, life imprisonment without possibility of parole and concurrently nine to ten years of imprisonment. For a day-to-day account of the trial itself, the reader is referred to Michael Wells Glueck's The Trial Of Thomas E. Toolan III, published after the trial ended and now available in paperback on this website, as an ebook on Amazon's wholly-owned subsidiary, Mobipocket.com, and as both a paperback and a download on the website of the publisher, Lulu.com.

3 out of 5 stars Very Well Written, But Disappointing Conclusion.......2007-05-05

While this is one more story of a good girl who meets a bad boy that results in her death because of his alcoholism and resulting obsessions and violent tendencies, this book does offer something a little different in that we get a clear, concise mental view of the areas of which the victim and accused resided and frequented; specifically, Nantucket and Manhattan.

I enjoyed the way the book was organized. A couple of chapters are detailing the life of the victim, Beth Lochtefeld, then it switches and the next chapters will relate what is known about the life of the accused, Tom Toolan. This pattern continues throughout the book until the last section. By doing so, it easily entwines the life of two people who, in the end, will forever be entwined; so to speak.

The disappointing factor of this book, however, was that it was completed before the accused stands trial. In my personal opinion, you cannot write a true crime unless you have the ending. I'll even accept it before appeals are filed and/or completed. Now we are left to wonder what will become of Tom Toolan. Thanks to the author's numerous references to Beth's Memorial website (where he seems to have obtained the majority of his information), we know where to go for updates.

4 out of 5 stars Great Character Study.......2007-03-20

This book was great in every aspect. I loved reading about the two main characters (real people, in this case), and was fascinated by the depiction of Nantucket and Cape Cod. Two minor areas of concern: I would have liked to hear more about what happened after the arrest and I never got a feeling of "knowing" the killer. (I am sure there will be an update in the paperbook version). I can understand how some reviewers might think this book was boring, those who have short attention spans or limited intelligence might feel that way. However, for the more sophisticated true-crime reader this book is top-notch. I was so inspired by the description of Nantucket that I have planned a trip there this summer to see it for myself.

Before his strange death in 1997 (his body was found hanging outside his Chicago office), Eugene Izzi wrote some of the best crime fiction in recent memory. His hard-edged books like A Matter of Honor and The Criminalist are told from the criminal's point of view.

Safe Harbor was first published in England in 1995, when Izzi was having trouble finding an American outlet. It's a familiar story: the mobster who becomes an informer for the best of reasons (in this case to protect his child) and then enters a witness protection program and goes on to lead a blameless life. Mark Torrence (called Tommy Torelli in his criminal days) is threatened in his new and secret life by a ghost from the past--a vengeful hit man named James Bracken. This vicious and depraved killer has his own very good and perversely logical reasons for hunting down Torrence.

What gives the book new life and lots of energy is the way Izzi develops his characters using small strokes of reality. Even the incredibly obnoxious next-door neighbor who accidentally leaks Torrence's true identity is made human because we get to peek into his daily life.

Not having any more new books by Izzi to look forward to is a great loss, but the late arrival of Safe Harbor makes it a bit more bearable. --Dick Adler

      Book Description

Mark Torrence is a decent man--a dedicated youth counselor; a loving husband and father; a person whose ingrained honesty and integrity is evident in his every action and all his personal dealings. But in a previous New York City life, before he "ratted" and vanished into the Witness Protection Program, Mark Torrence was Tommy Torrelli, an associate of wiseguys who made their bones through violence, extortion, thievery, and worse. Now a world-class hit man with a swollen bank account has agreed to take Torrence/Torrelli down gratis, in order to satisfy inner demons who will only be appeased by vengeance and with blood. As an ever-tightening circle of terror closes in around him, Torrence realizes that his new identity has suddenly become a liability. And the only way he can save his unsuspecting family--the only way he can survive--is by becoming something he truly despises: the man he once was.

5 out of 5 stars Cage or cemetery?.......2003-08-02

The style of this author is o.k.; somewhat repeat with not enough dialogues so the descriptions become tedious, but the action is compelling. This is the first book I read by Eugene Izzi. For people emmigrating to the US., this book could surely be an eye-opener about the "promised land": The crime scenes of the inner cities. The author gives the impression that he knows first-hand what he is writing about. This book is about the hopelessness of the youth being forced to become gang-bangers, clutched in a vicious circle of immorality, when the formative teenage years are wasted in hopelessness. In the United States, a good youth program is to lock them up. Nasty as the Nazis were, they had an idealistic youth program (Hitler-Jugend), because it was believed that the youth is the future of a nation. In this book the outlook is dim, as the only way out for the inner-city youth is a cage or the cemetery. The statistics don't lie: 10 000 people die each year by fire-arms in the United States, while in other countries the number is around 160. I have to give this book a lot of credit for its naked reality, as shocking as it is.

      4 out of 5 stars Above-average crime melodrama.......2000-06-04

This a good example of the sort of thing it is - namely a story of undecover, larger-than-life killers, crooks, and losers whose paths converge in a final conflict wherein demons are exorcised and good prevails (relatively speaking). The author is a thoroughgoing craftsman who spends a good deal of his book painstakingly developing the characters and lives of his protagonists, who include a dropout from the witness-protection program, a homosexual hit man, an embittered journalist, and assorted loved ones, cops, and victims. The author's writing skills are sufficient to keep the reader interested until the real action begins, along about page 200. And the story is resolved without requiring anyone to step completely out of character, as is often a failing of lesser authors. This story is basically that of an up-and-coming mobster who rats on his associates and is granted federal protection. Some years later, having left the program and achieved an honest life on his own, he finds himself pursued by the past in the person of an ingenious killer with a grudge. It is the tragic nature of such novels that the characters ultimately find themselves responding to malevolent forces outside their control rather than acting on their own volition. It's also interesting to note that in most formulaic books such as this, nobody (notably the author) is permitted to display any sense of humor or any ability to stand aside from or transcend the limits of his situation. This lack of dimension makes such books and their characters easy to forget, however entertaining they may be, and is in my estimation a large part of what separates potboilers from good literature. But I suppose that without the former to keep the presses rolling, there would be no publishing business around when needed to produce the latter.

      4 out of 5 stars A very good read.......1999-08-11

SAFE HARBOR is a fitting novel that triumphantly shows thetalent of the late Eugene Izzi. The story line moves rather quickly asits centers on life in the slums and the mob. Mr. Izzi carefully defines his characters with motives that make their actions seem genuine. The cast turns the well-written plot of SAFE HARBOR into a safe bet. Fans and critics will recognize this book as one of the year,s best stories. Renowned for novels like THE CRIMINALIST, Mr. Izzi has left his fans with a special legacy that probably is his best work in an illustrious career.
