Book Description

Cotton Malone retired from the high-risk world of elite operatives for the U.S. State Department to lead the low-key life of a rare-book dealer. But his quiet existence is shattered when he receives an anonymous e-mail: “You have something I want. You’re the only person on earth who knows where to find it. Go get it. You have 72 hours. If I don’t hear from you, you will be childless.” His horrified ex-wife confirms that the threat is real: Their teenage son has been kidnapped. When Malone’s Copenhagen bookshop is burned to the ground, it becomes brutally clear that those responsible will stop at nothing to get what they want. And what they want is nothing less than the lost Library of Alexandria.

A cradle of ideas–historical, philosophical, literary, scientific, and religious–the Library of Alexandria was unparalleled in the world. But fifteen hundred years ago, it vanished into the mists of myth and legend–its vast bounty of wisdom coveted ever since by scholars, fortune hunters, and those who believe its untold secrets hold the key to ultimate power.

Now a cartel of wealthy international moguls, bent on altering the course of history, is desperate to breach the library’s hallowed halls–and only Malone possesses the information they need to succeed. At stake is an explosive ancient document with the potential not only to change the destiny of the Middle East but to shake the world’s three major religions to their very foundations.

Pursued by a lethal mercenary, Malone crosses the globe in search of answers. His quest will lead him to England and Portugal, even to the highest levels of American government–and the shattering outcome, deep in the Sinai desert, will have worldwide repercussions.

3 out of 5 stars Yet another wanna-be.......2007-10-09

Ambitious but flimsy plot, stretched way too thin. Stock characters: brash, talented, patriotic American agent; hero worshipping teenage son, brilliant European mentor, evil financial genius with ties to Al Quaida, crooked politicians, ruthless terrorists. Hackneyed situations: agent in from the cold unwillingly dragged back into the game; kidnapping of son; reluctant partnering with ex wife, who's a lawyer but somewhat dumb and obstructionist; the Arab/Israeli conflict; the Christian manipulation and misrepresentation of fact; the frantic chase through the mid-east trying to solve a cryptic riddle.
Those are the main problems with Alexandria Link, which never lives up to its billing as a thriller, and is an obvious companion of all the other daVinci Code coat tail riders. Nevertheless, if you're up for a quick few hours of mildly interesting reading, AL will do the trick. I got the audio version from the public library, and listened in the car. I wouldn't buy any version of this title, but for free, it was ok. Having read other Berry novels, I knew what to expect. Not being encumbered by specific biases about the middle east, I did not find AL particulary pro Israeli or pro Palestinian.

2 out of 5 stars Rush to publish?.......2007-09-11

Berry seems like so many authors - by the time they earn a best selling reputation there best work is done. Maybe it is the outside pressure or time constaints put on authors with big contracts and printings.
This book seems like 1/2 great idea merged with 1/2 a rush job to get out his annual early year book.
It was so much a formula action adventure story. His usual thoroughness and depth is gone replaced by ridiculous double agent stuff!
The story was too big and had too many players for its length.
I gave 2 stars - bad book plus interesting ideas.
If this book sounds interesting and you haven't read his first 3 -
read any of those.

1 out of 5 stars Nearly unreadable...and I'm being kind.......2007-08-31

If one wonders what is wrong with today's bestsellers, look no farther than the this "book" as an example of the latest crop of amazingly superficial mass market novels. The Alexandria Link is so dreadful, repetitive and down-right boring that one feels outright sorrow for the felled forests that made way for this waste of pulp. The plot swings wildly between Batman-like action (the TV show, not the movies) and a poorly written high school term paper about the woes of the ancient Alexandria library. Throw in a sinister group bent on global terrorism, a secret agent turned humble book store owner (who knows just a bit too much...wow, what a stretch of imagination), a clinging ex-wife, and you have one paper mache plot that goes nowhere fast.

And this takes me back to my first statement. Today's best sellers are mindless violence coupled with exotic locations, which is apparently the only type of books that major publishing houses can figure out how to market anymore. I found myself skipping whole sections, and still being disappointed at the time I wasted.

4 out of 5 stars Gerry's Thoughts.......2007-08-22

I enjoyed the story even though it was not what I expected the content to be about.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written and just plain silly.......2007-08-21

I hardly know where to begin - Berry takes every cliche of the spy and mystery genre and mixes it with laughable dialogue, wooden characters, and totally unbelievable action. There's definitely an anti-Israel bias but even that I could get past if it weren't so badly written. Definitely save your money!

Book Description

A common denominator among most new traders is that, within six months of launching their new pursuit, they are out of money and out of trading. High-Probability Trading softens the impact of this "trader's tuition," detailing a comprehensive program for weathering those perilous first months and becoming a profitable trader.

This no-nonsense book takes a uniquely blunt look at the realities of trading. Filled with real-life examples and intended for use by both short- and long-term traders, it explores each aspect of successful trading.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the top five trading books you should own and read regularly.......2007-10-08

Different trading books cover different aspects of trading, like risk, execution, or psychology. This book covers all of that and more. It is one of the few complete books on trading I have read so far. I don't think you can read this one book and become a great trader, but I do think it starts you in the right direction and if you follow what Marcel is saying you will be a better trader.

I also think if you are already a successful trader there are many things in this book that can help you to become even more successful. I first read this book about two years ago. Learned some good things from it and then put it on my shelf of trading books. I pulled it back off the shelf about a week ago and started reading it again. I am glad I did. There are so many pearls of wisdom in this book that I had forgotten, or just stopped using over time. Sometimes we need to be reminded so we can continue to improve.

Marcel appears to be a real trader. That's a good thing because there are many trading books out there written by real authors, not real traders. The wisdom he lays down in this book are the bits and pieces he learned through his trials and errors over years of trading.

Here are some of the things I took away from this book.

-Trading is the hardest job you will ever have. If you think you are going to just walk over to your computer, turn it on, and then buy or sell your way to riches without any preparation, you are sadly mistaken. If someone tells you it is easy, ask to see their audited statements for the past few years.

-Be realistic about the time it will take you to become successful. It will probably be 2-5 years of diligent work before you can become a successful trader. Some people can do it in less time, others will need more time. A doctor, lawyer, or other professional cannot become an expert in their field in a couple of months. Why would you think you can do it in a field like trading? Something else to learn from doctors or lawyers, the really successful ones specialize. You cannot trade every market, so find the ones you are good at and specialize in those areas. That's the way to happiness and profits.

-Learning to trade is a timed race. You need to become successful before you run out of money. Its just like a new business, you need to make money before you go broke. Treat trading as a business and you will be more successful at it.

-In the beginning it is much more important to learn how to not lose money than it is to learn how to make money. If you keep from losing money you lengthen your learning time. No money means no trading. You have to preserve your precious capital. Plus once you learn how not to lose money, you start getting better at realizing how to make it.

-You need to have the proper capital to succeed, or you need to have realistic expectations for the capital you currently have. You should not be trading four e-mini futures contracts on a $10,000 account. It would put your risk level way too high and lower your chances to succeed. Proper risk levels are vitally important.

-Never take a trade that you cannot explain. You need to understand why you are getting into a trade. There are tons of trades every single day. This book is about taking the high probability trades. Why take a low probability trade when all you need to do is be patient and a higher probability trade is right around the corner.

-Trading against the trend is a low probability trade. Why not place the odds in your favor by trading with the trend?

-Trade the market, not your P/L. Trade what the market is showing you. Do not trade because you need to make a mortgage payment or car payment. The market is very generous and gives you many opportunities each and every day to transfer some of its money to your account. Wait patiently and be prepared to act when those opportunities arise.

-Always have a stop-loss. That means a hard stop you place the second after you put on the trade, or a mental stop that you will execute without fail if the market hits that number. A stop-loss just lets you know the trade is not what you are expecting. A small loss is part of the game. Do not let it turn into a large loss. Some of the best traders are only right about 30-40% of the time. And they make millions by only taking a small loss when they are wrong and letting their profits run when they are right.

-Risk. You need to set proper risk levels and always follow them. You will never know ahead of time which trades will make money or which trades will lose money, so you need to have proper risk levels at all times. Improper risk levels are one of the most critical reasons that new traders fail. By risking too much they never give themselves a fighting chance to be successful in the markets. New traders have not figured out their edge, they have not dealt with their own psychology, they have a dozen reasons why the trade is wrong, but with improper risk levels they get too few chances at learning the correct way to trade.

-Psychology. Whole books have been written on this subject. Marcel hits many of the important ones in his life, they will probably help you out too. This is a very important subject that you must conquer to be successful. For some it is easy, others will work on it until the day they die. I once read somewhere that "The market is an expensive place to learn about yourself". It's very true.

I can easily say that this book is in my list of the five best trading books. It deserves to be read more than once. Maybe once a year if you are actively trading. I would like to be able to give a brief description of the highlights of this book, but this is an all-encompassing book on trading. It covers everything that the majority of traders need to know and understand. If you follow what Marcel talks about in this book, you will have a high probability of succeeding in your trading career.

5 out of 5 stars Some good wisdom for a trader reading this book........2007-08-12

I just went through this book and it has some good information a stock trader can use to improve his approach trading stocks.

I read so many trading books in my trading career and many you can through out the window. This one you can find a spot on your book shelf after you read through it and you won't need to throw it out of the window.

If you are having a hard time getting on the right track trading this is another book you can find a place on your bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars I just love this book!!.......2007-05-14

This book is one of my favorite trading books. It was right after I hit a pretty huge drawdown that I started reading this book, and it gave me a clear vision of high probability trading. I took back all my losses and became consistently profitable though I still do lose, but losing is part of trading anyway...
One thing, some of the strategies might be a little difficult to program for those who trade based on systems, but lots of useful ideas!! recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars The only way to trade successfully.......2007-03-23

The title of this book speaks volumes about what you will find inside. What the author discusses through out this book is how to make every trade give you high probable odds to make money. Trade unemotionally, don't get greedy, and don't try to make the market pay you back for past losses. Do not become arrogant and stop using a proven system. Wait for a pullback to buy a hot stock instead of buying at an all time high. Do not over trade, wait and watch for a great set up. Give trades room to develop do not set to tight of stops. Give winning trades room to run before taking profits. This book is an all in one book for successfully trading covering all the bases, technical trades, money management, risk management, and the psychological aspects of trading. No trade is a sure thing, we deal in probabilities, increase your odds by practicing what this book teaches. I highly recommend. Also read ALL of Dr. Alexander Elder's books for more specific trading principles involving your mind, method, and money management.

5 out of 5 stars Best Intraday Trading Book.......2007-03-23

I have been trading profitably for about three years. I have been at this for about five years. I trade anything from fx spot market to mini-futures. Once a month I go back over all of my trades, read Elder's, Come Into My Trading Room, and this book is the first book I grab to re-hash strategies. I estimate that only about ten actual books on trading these days will make you profitable in todays markets. This book is one of the top three. The other two are Murphy's technical trading book and Tading in the Zone for the psychological aspect of this game.
For the person who said that indicators are not profitable- How have I been making money, consistently, for several years now with indicators all over my charts? Granted, I do not use indicators like the typical "Default" hogs that get slaughtered when they use indicators without any testing etc.. I use indicators exactly like Link shows in this book. I guess it works for some traders and not for other traders?

Book Description

Recent research in the field of business strategy has shown that strategic flexibility can be achieved through a scenario planning perspective for long term competition and performance. The authors have drawn upon examples and cases to develop a new model for scenario planning that is closely integrated with strategy. They argue that the concept of scenario planning is as much an art as a practical management tool.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nuts and bolts of scenario planning.......2003-08-06

I saw an review in Harvard Business School and I fully agree with them: "...serious but yet it's the friendliest introduction to the nuts and bolts of scenario planning that you are likely to find..." I really recommend this book to everyone who wants to explore, understand and have an impact on the future.

4 out of 5 stars Practical tools for future strategy.......2003-05-19

This is an eminently practical book on scenario and strategy development. The language is simple, straight-forward with many examples, tools and anecdotes. In a verbal style, with lots of figures and bullet point lists, the five chapters in a way resembles lectures.
As faculty and lecturer at the Norwegian School of Management I find this book a perfect supplement in the curriculum to the two classics: P. Schwartz' "Art of the long view" and van Heijden "Scenarios". This book occupies a kind of middle-position between Schwartz' very popular and narrative account and van Heijden's more rational-academic discourse, which some practitioners find a hard read. Not like this one. There's not much deep philosophy either, as in J. Ogilvys recent "Creating Better Futures". The chapter on scenario planning in practice (#3) contains loads of simple, informative examples, written much shorter and to the point, than G. Ringland's three books on scenarios with much-detailed cases, repetitions and a weak structure.
In short - this book is a toolbox with instructions manual. As the Swedish authors Lindgren and Bandhold themselves say in the book; "Get yourself a toolbox". If you, as a manager or consultant want to learn, update or expand your portfolio of future oriented strategy tools, this one is The Choice.

Product Description

In The Last Link, Gregg Crawford, CEO of the multinational performance-improvement firm BayGroup International, exposes the money pit that impotent strategies create. For over twenty-five years, he has worked with major global companies to help them function better. He has found countless companies spending millions of dollars to develop and disseminate a strategy they believe will lead them to corporate growth, strong profits, and secure margins. Companies hope such plans will emphasize their competitive advantages and garner approval from Wall Street, but often they become expensive bookends, never used or looked at beyond the planning process. The Last Link offers hard-hitting practical advice and a watertight implementation process to move the numbers in the right direction by linking strategy with sales.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another management consulting book apparently designed to promote the author's consulting practice. Nothing special........2007-07-22

I didn't like the organization of this book. I could have handled Chapter 1 as an introduction, but not 1 and 2. I thought Chapter 8 was really what should have been the introduction followed by chapters 3-6 and then 9. I didn't like chapters 1, 2 and 7 at all. And I had no need for the "Application" section.

The book could have been so much better if it had been much less verbose. And some more real world examples mixed in the main body of the book would have been helpful, too. There was just too much theory thrown at me in an unorganized manner without some stories and examples thrown in to make the book interesting.

Basically the premise of this book was very simple. A company with a sound business plan must integrate its ENTIRE workforce into the plan, including its sales function. If the sales team is not strategically integrated into the plan so it functions seamlessly as part of the company, then there will be a "broken link." And a broken link or "gap" will create inefficiencies and loss to the company.

The problem the author identifies in this book as it applies to a sales team is equally applicable to company Web sites. Too many companies think they must just have a Web site and they throw something together that looks nice and is little more than an electronic brochure. Web sites can do much more for the company if they are integrated into the company's business plan to serve a valuable marketing purpose.

The funny thing about this book is the author says he's been making a living for 25 years selling the contents of this book to large corporations. I'm torn between giving this book a 3 star or a 4 star rating. My review is pretty scathing so I am going to throw it a bone. 4 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Hits home where the rubber meets the road -- the interface with clients!.......2007-03-14

Based on the other reviews, it seems I am not alone in my liking this book. Obviously from my rating I appreciated the book -- it contains real examples and points that I will apply to my organization today. A simple read, but very content rich ... powerful.

We have all heard the cliché "People buy from people" - this is such a vaunted phrase in sales. We hear another cliché ties in most companies as well: "Sales drives the business". My review will ultimately tie to these. While at first I thought the theme of this essay to be around corporate strategies and their pitfalls, I quickly understood my preconception was incorrect. This book actually ties together the "Gaps" in the execution of sales strategy to the "Gap" in executing the corporate strategy.

Crawford does a terrific job of using real company numbers and examples to demonstrate what we all can agree to but rarely look to act upon. The truth about clichés is they usually contain some key truths and/or insights ... but too often we overlook their guidance (thus the term "cliché"). The Last Link pieces together a simple but critical connection between "Strategy Creation" and the "How-to's" and discipline around executing that strategy. Using what Crawford terms a "3-D model" (data, dialogue and discipline) the book introduces what seems a simple and straight-forward concept: we all have some key agreements we need (these are termed "Pivotal Agreements"). From the hundreds of agreements we gain we can likely distill these into a few "Pivotal" agreements and then we can repeatedly and consistently focus upon these. If a salesperson uses the client data available (collecting that data with some strategic intention as demonstrated in the book), and then applies some of the key dialogue skills/principles shared within this book in their customer interfaces, then their results will improve - the needle will move.

Sounds straight forward; however, tie this to a sales management, support, and leadership discipline for uniformity and replication of those same single-instance results and you will see an overall sales impact build.

Crawford then links this back to the connection between this sales build and the real execution of the corporate strategy (remember that cliché of "Sales drives the business"). Crawford gives some great real examples in the Appendices (Appendix C has some excellent examples into which you can easily relate), and also adds some fantastic behavioral improvement skills (Chapter 5 on Dialogue really hits home - key skills you can use today: again, remember that cliché of "People buy from people").

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any sales executive.......2007-03-07

This book is full of great concepts that address the issues that keep sales executives up at night. The 3-D model is powerful and easy to understand. Great read!!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Without a customer, you have no business." -- Peter Drucker.......2007-03-01

There are dozens of excellent books already in print that explain how to formulate and then execute a strategy that - in Lawrence Hrebiniak's apt phrase - "really works." Indeed, Gregg Crawford cites several sources throughout his narrative which would have been listed in a bibliography, had he provided one. Nonetheless, most strategies are ineffective. Why? According to Crawford, "Because although companies put huge effort into designing, discussing, and launching their strategies, they neglect the last link - they sabotage their strategy where it matters most, where the company comes into contact with its customers. They fail to forge the vital connection between strategy and execution at the customer interface, where margins, growth, and profitability are all determined. And yet somehow, companies still expect to see results." And they do, for better or worse.

In this context, I am reminded of what Barbara Bund has to say about the importance of establishing and then sustaining what she calls an "outside-in" organization. Crawford agrees that execution of a corporate strategy that is not customer-centric is almost certain to fail. Throughout the narrative in his book, he offers a step-by-step process by which to identify and then avoid or eliminate "hidden profit killers." He explains what interface management is and why it is "the most important component of successful sales strategy execution." In order to "rewire a sales organization," Crawford suggests, it is necessary to proceed as follows:

1. Consummate "pivotal agreements" with customers that are connected with the financial metrics of the given corporate strategy;

2. Have sales initiatives be guided and informed by what he calls a "3D" model which involves gathering relevant data, using focused dialogue, and executing strategy with discipline;

3. Effectively use "dialogue principles" (e.g. value creation and agreement execution) as tactics to manage customer interface;

4. Formulate a Sales Execution Plan that defines an organization's specific plans for executing corporate strategy at the point of customer interface; and

5. Successfully implement the strategy through deployment, sponsorship, and reinforcement of rigorous discipline (key term) by senior-level executives and other on the leadership team.

I especially appreciate Crawford's pragmatic approach with his primary emphasis on "what" and "how." Moreover, he also offers valuable advice on "what not to do" and "how not to do it." Excellence of performance can only be achieved through a process of elimination of what doesn't work while continuing and constantly improving what does, achieving excellence with discipline that, on occasion, must be tenacious. It takes faith and trust to remain faithful to an appropriate strategy. Sometimes courage is required when there are serious problems to solve, formidable barriers to overcome, etc. Long ago, Jack Dempsey said that "champions get up when they can't." Presumably Crawford agrees that companies that complete "the last link," while encountering all manner of difficulties that "sabotage" their efforts to do so, will eliminate the "hidden profit killers."

How to do that? A cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective answer is provided in Crawford's brilliant book.

It's a rare book that delivers so completely on such a broad promise. Mother-Daughter Wisdom is written to connect the dots between a number of separate parts: logical and emotional morality, physical and mental health, friends and family, and in an overarching sense, the relationship between being a woman's daughter and raising a daughter of your own.

Because of the scope of information presented, it can be tricky to pick up the book and look for quick guidance on a particular topic such as adolescent weight issues or childhood asthma; more use, and more pleasure, will be found if you add it to your permanent reference shelf to look through in stages. Author Dr. Christiane Northup (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom) seamlessly blends personal stories with clear research in a way that creates a compelling read from start to finish, even if the specific topic isn't necessarily one that concerns you. Information is a welcome mix of old school medical advice and new school nutrition and stress relief. In Northup's world, whole foods and loving communication can play just as important roles as antibiotics.

The book is categorized somewhat loosely by age, beginning with pregnancy and labor, and continuing through infancy, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. Each section is quite specifically tuned to relating to daughters: Mothers of sons will get some use out of sections on breastfeeding, vaccinations and the like, but emotional concerns and physical recommendations are tailor-made for women and girls, right down to the resource guide that ends the book. By itself, that resource guide is an excellent starting point for further reading, both online and in print. When added to the whole, it is just one more reason you'll reach for the book on a regular basis. Jill Lightner

Book Description

With such groundbreaking bestsellers as Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause, Dr. Christiane Northrup is one of today’s most trusted and visionary medical experts. Now she presents her most profound and revolutionary approach to women’s health. . . .

The mother-daughter relationship sets the stage for our state of health and well-being for our entire lives. Because our mothers are our first and most powerful female role models, our most deeply ingrained beliefs about ourselves as women come from them. And our behavior in relationships—with food, with our children, with our mates, and with ourselves—is a reflection of those beliefs. Once we understand our mother-daughter bonds, we can rebuild our own health, whatever our age, and create a lasting positive legacy for the next generation.

Mother-Daughter Wisdom introduces an entirely new map of female development, exploring the “five facets of feminine power,” which range from the basics of physical self-care to the discovery of passion and purpose in life. This blueprint allows any woman—whether or not she has children—–to repair the gaps in her own upbringing and create a better adult relationship with her mother. If she has her own daughter, it will help her be the mother she has always wanted to be.

Drawing on patient case histories and personal experiences, Dr. Northrup also presents findings at the cutting edge of medicine and psychology. Discover:

•How to lay the nutritional foundation to prevent eating disorders and adult diseases
•The truth about the immunization controversy–and the true meaning of immunity
•How we can change our genetic health legacy
•Why financial literacy is essential to women’s health
•How to foster healthy sexuality and future “love maps” in our daughters
•How to balance independence with caring, and individual growth with family ties

Written with warmth, enthusiasm, and rare intelligence, Mother-Daughter Wisdom is an indispensable book destined to change lives and become essential reading for all women.

1 out of 5 stars Dissappointing.......2007-05-08

I have so enjoyed Christians & Mona Lisa's tapes on Intuitive Healing, I thought that this would be just as good. After listening to 2 of the CD's I switched them off, they were so full of negative stuff, that someone having a baby for the first time, would be so fearful of the process. I know when having my own first child, I stopped reading the information, simply becasue we are "wired" to think the worst, instead of what we need to think "It's OK"

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING BOOK.......2007-05-03

This book is amazing. If you have a daughter or not this is a must read!

2 out of 5 stars Some good advice, but a lot of misleading information..........2007-03-11

Christiane Northrup is not a psychologist, as another reviewer commented, but she sure tries to act like one. And she uses her own life experience as her only basis for many of her claims. If this book were just a memoir, I think I would have less of a problem with it. Much of the health advice in this book is either questionable in safety and value (such as consuming large amounts of soy, which is increasingly being shown to be dangerous, or not vaccinating your children at all) or is obvious to anyone with common sense (don't make an issue about how much your daughter eats, eat regular meals with the family, blah, blah). And all of the talk about menstrual cycles and celebrating your femininity and kundalini rising really rubbed me the wrong way. I am all for questioning traditional medicine and healing yourself in natural ways, but I need real science to back things up, not anecdotes from "intuitive healers" (aka psychics.) However, here and there sprinkled throughout the book there are interesting bits of information and interesting perspectives on the mother-daughter relationship. You just have to be a very critical reader while going through this book, and I definitely don't accept Dr. Northrup's authority unquestioningly.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.......2007-01-19

I have other books by Christiane Northrup and I wasn't disappointed with this one. There are so many issues and points that are relevant, I seem to jump around and read what I want - but its easy to read and digest. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Freeing, insightful, helpful.......2007-01-17

This book is one of the most helpful books I have ever read. It offered so much insight and I identified with it so much! If you want to be enlightened about your womanhood, your relationships, your childhood, your health, this is a must read! Definitely recommend it.

It is idle time for understanding a management will allow you to accustom to a developing area of telecommunications quickly. Written by skilled experts of company Hill Associates - the leading company on preparation of technical experts in the field of telecommunications, this book contains the technical information necessary for understanding and application of key technologies.

5 out of 5 stars best intro to voice and data communications.......2005-06-14

If you only can read one book on the subject, this is it.
Written by experts in the field of computer networking and telco engineers it gives clear explanation of POTS infrastructure and data networking fundamentals, including the internet architecture. A lot of pages are devoted to "dying" technologies, such as X.25, ATM, and frame relay. Hot topics such as TCP/IP and Ethernet don't get enough coverage in my opinion. Even so, the book deserves 5 stars because even though it may not have everything, it does cover a lot and it does it well and with some sense of humor. There is no "filler" in this book. Besides, other books on the subject are ether too light (Dodd and Golenievsky), too technical (Freeman and Minoli) or
too wordy and biased towards telco point of view (Bates and Horak)
I must say I liked Horak's "Communications systems and networks" too -- it has a lot of complimentary and interesting details, historical notes and is written in a warm and loving style. I recommend you to read it before Hill's book if you are really interested in telecommunications.

Book Description

To Humbolt's surprise, Schwimer has much different news. "I have just returned from the Cascades and believe I have found the missing link." There is a pause at Humbolt's end. Schwimer softly shouts, "Did you hear me, Humbolt?"

When a new creature is discovered in Washington State's Cascade Mountains, adversaries Arthur Schwimer, an evolutionist, and Gary Humbolt, a creationist, join forces in a common quest to determine the scientific veracity of the latest discovery of the so-called missing link between ape and man.

A sophisticated research facility is set up in the remote section of the forest where the creatures live. The substantiation of Darwin's theory- and the possible demise of the world's most established religions-rest on the results. But after the analysis begins, three members of the study group are mysteriously killed. Judith Moses, Humbolt's assistant, wades through the perplexing clues, desperately seeking answers before the seemingly indisputable research can be presented to the public. Have the researchers indeed discovered the missing link, or have they been duped by a marvel of genetic engineering?

Creationists to the extreme right and Darwinists to the extreme left; if you find these views of how humans came into being too extreme or simplistic, and enjoy well crafted science fiction stories, then Missing Link will be worth your while.

5 out of 5 stars Great book. Thought provoking........2007-04-02

Missing Link pursues the question of "Why are we here" with murder, mytery and intrigue. This is a short science fiction thriller that is worth reading.

Whether you believe in the Creator, Darwin or both, you'll find Missing Link missing very little. A page burning mystery that can be consumed in a few hours. A great companion for a cross-country flight or while stuck in an airport.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE BULLETPROOF FIREWALL!!.......2006-05-22

Are you getting ready to take your Check Point certification exam? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Robert Stephens, Barry Stiefel, Stephen Watkins, Simon Desmeules and Eli Faskha, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that is the perfect reference for anyone migrating from earlier versions of Check Point's flagship firewall/VPN product; as well as, those deploying VPN-1/FireWall-1 for the first time.

Stephens, Stiefel, Watkins, Desmeules and Faskha, begin by discussing the various methods that are deployed among different firewall vendors and open source solutions. Then, the authors discuss the significant changes between NG AI and NGX and partitions these changes into eight major categories. They continue with a review of what must be done prior to the actual installation and configuration of a Check Point environment. Next, the authors guide you through the necessary steps to perform the NGX upgrade. Then they take you on a tour of the interface used to configure your NGX installation: the SmartDashboard. They also discuss the need for tracking and walk you through a few configuration examples. Then, they discuss both basic and advanced concepts for network security and reveal how Check Point's technologies supply relief for current threats. The authors continue by showing you how to enable or disable Network Address Translation for a single host, for a range of addresses, or for an entire network. Next, they address the best way to authenticate users so they can access privileged resources. Then, the authors show you how Check Point FireWall-1 can integrate with third-party products. They continue by focusing on configuring site-to-site VPNs and the different design considerations that are involved. Next, the authors discuss the increasing number of employees that are either working comfortably at home or just simply away from the office, who need corporate access as if working locally. Then, they examine the functionality of SmartUpdate as a SmartConsole client in your Check Point environment. They also take you on a tour of SecurePlatform with the different operating system capabilities and the Check Point supported add-ons to SPLAT. Next, the authors demonstrate how to set up SmartView Monitor in a way that will allow you to view all your security components that your SmartCenter manages. Finally, the authors show, first the reason why VoIP should be secured and, second, how it is done.

The goal of this most excellent book is to cover all of NGX's dramatic changes and new, enhanced features. More importantly, you will learn how to secure the integrality of your network's data, communications, and applications from a multitude of blended threats.

5 out of 5 stars All the new NGX features.......2006-03-17

Any familiar with prior versions of Check Point's firewall program and newcomers to CheckPoint alike will find CONFIGURING CHECK POINT NGX VPN-1/FIREWALL-1 an important overview of all the new features in NGX. From working with the SmartView Tracker tool and understanding how a Check Point VPN-1 Pro Gateway administrator evolves to work into network security to handling authentication and integrity issues globally, everything from building the platform to licensing is covered in detail. An excellent survey of all the enhanced features and changes.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book.......2006-02-17

'Configuring Check Point NGX VPN-1/Firewall-1' by Robert Stephens is another good book by Syngress for IT Professionals. Syngress has really focussed on IT setup and configuration for it's latest releases of books and they have done a solid job. Packing over 600 pages of material into this guide, if you use Checkpoint at your job, you would be wise to pick up a copy of this book for your desk at work.

***** RECOMMENDED

4 out of 5 stars Near the official courseware.......2006-01-25

This book is written by many respected authors and security professionals. Among them there is Barry J. Stiefel, the man who founded the first Check Point User Group (www.cpug.org).

I'm a Check Point Certified Instructor (CCSI) and can assure this book covers a lot of topics included in official Check Point VPN-1 NGX coursewares.

On Chapter 13 about Check Point VPN clients solutions it includes a Integrity technology discussion, acquired from ZoneLabs and to be merged with SecureClient.

On Chapter 14 it also includes a lot of details from the official Check Point SecurePlatform courseware.

The last chapter, Chapter 16 about VoIP, is even better than on the official course manual.

The book misses more details on some covered product features, coverage of some excluded features, OPSEC 3rd party interoperability examples, architectural problems discussion (like logging strategy, rulebase optimization, etc.), but it's a good book.

I strongly recommend it to anyone didn't take the course and want to have a wide coverage of many VPN-1 NGX features.
Who already attended the official course won't find here anything new.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Business Owners While in Mid-career, too!.......2005-07-30

I read this book cover to cover looking for sound information that I can pass along to the business owners and non-profit organization leaders that are my management consulting clients.

I was delighted to find the book PACKED with advice that helps wealthy individuals consider the total picture of how the wealth transfer impacts the next generation and not just current tax reprecussions.

I recommend it to the Wealth counselors that I meet. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for those with net worth > $5Million.......2001-08-12

Most people of wealth make several false starts with comprehensive income and estate planning. This book describes a method of first determining your life purpose and goals by an extensive interview process. Only then can the technical aspects of planning be addressed.

Well written book by the director of the National Assn of Family Wealth Counselors. If you are a person of means this is a safe starting point to a network of highly qualified and competent FWCs.

The author asks: "If you had to choose between giving one million dollars away to the IRS in estate taxes or giving that same one million to your favorite charity, which would you prefer?" Great question. To fail to plan is to give half or more of your estate away to the IRS.

This book will provide good insight if your net worth is $2-5 Million or you are a financial counselor.
