Book Description

In The Dreaming Universe author Fred Alan Wolf examines the psychological and scientific elements of this most personal yet most enigmatic of human processes. By linking research ranging from the ancient Greek "dream temples" and modern experiments in telepathy, REM, and lucid dreaming to his own research on human consciousness, he theorizes that dreaming is the basis for consciousness, and that it is through dreaming that we are able to manifest a sense of ourselves.

2 out of 5 stars If everything's a dream, then nothing's a dream........2002-08-14

10-Point Rating: (5.5)
This book gets two stars for dealing with an extremely interesting topic and for making quite a few good points throughout, however the author just wants dreams to do too much. The fact that we can and do distinguish between waking (i.e. ordinary) consciousness and dream consciousness means that the two must be qualitatively different - and in fact they are. The discontinuity of dreams among other features distinguishes them as derivative conscious states, that is to say they are not primary - everyday waking consciousness is primary. We define dreams relative to waking states and not vice-versa for a variety of reasons, and Wallace does little to challenge these obvious differences. It's a bit like saying "everything's alive" or "everything's conscious" - statements like these tend to cheapen the meanings of these words, if everything is, then nothing is.

4 out of 5 stars Sophistocated and enlightening.......2002-03-22

This has much of the same information as the Holographic Universe (above) but worded in a more scientific way. I found Talbot's book much easier to read and just better overall. This book is highly worthwhile in it's own right although. If I had to pick one it would be Talbots.

4 out of 5 stars Very good........2002-01-06

This is not light reading..It is a read that one has to take slow and think about. The information presented in the book is very thought stimulating. It is an excellent book and the author does a good job of simplifying a very complex subject.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Instincts.......2001-04-26

This book is a must if you've ever wondered why it's easier to hunt deer with a computer game than it is to hunt the real thing. A computer (and the brain, according to some physicists) operate under Boolean theory. A program contains all possible scenarios at once, with overlaps in some segments of each. A specific inquiry narrows the choices, but ultimately, there is only one outcome. Fred Alan Wolf attempts to explain the variable 'instinct' that is the ancient universal holding place for all knowledge. Instinct can't be duplicated by a computer, so it must exist in a Quantum environment. A semi-conscious state like a dream would be necessary to access such an environment. An excellent thought-provoking read.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacles for the Mind's Eye........2001-03-12

Fred Alan Wolf takes us closer than ever to understanding the "Mind's Eye," and how the brain produces pictures through holograms.

Whether you agree or disagree with Wolf's conclusions, you can't read this book without learning something, or seeing something new in the world of consciousness, matter, and dreams. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling . . ........2006-06-11

This chilling tale describes the descent of a young Algerian, an aspiring movie actor, who is swept by the soul-crushing forces of poverty and a repressive government into the arms of the Islamist insurgency. A stint as a driver for a wealthy family exposes him to the ruthless abuses of privilege and pushes him in revolusion back to his Muslim faith and from there under the influence of political rhetoric to the fringes of the Resistance, where he becomes an assassin and eventually an armed underground fighter engaging in attacks on government forces.

Along the way there is much bloodshed and sorrow, treachery, betrayal, and unspeakable acts, all in the professed service of God. The author's distate for the Islamist movement in his home country is undisguised, and he has written a disturbing account of its worst excesses. A short novel, it moves with the swiftness of well-written crime fiction. It includes a glossary and a time-line identifying the key dates in Algerian political history from the War of Independence (1954-1962) to the first years of the 21st century.

4 out of 5 stars Wolf Dreams Review.......2005-03-18

The book is written by Mohammed Moulessehoul under a female pen name, Yasmina Khadra. He did this to avoid persecution, being an officer in the Algerian Army. He eventually revealed his true identity, years later while in exile in France.

The story follows Nafa Walid, a man who hopes to become an actor in the movie industry, but he begins to gradually loses control of his destiny and becomes drawn into the Algerian Islamic Fundamentalist movement. "Wolf Dreams" shows how dissatisfaction and disillusionment in a corrupt nation can give rise to fundamentalism, and how the chaos of civil war can transform a normal, middle-class young man into an indoctrinated assassin; a man who inflicts pain and terror on others without qualms, and accepts the idea of his own death with the devotion of a true-believing fanatic.

It is definitely worth the time to read; it's gritty and pulls no punches, showing the corruption of the country's aristocracy, but at the same time, it doesn't glorify Islamic fundamentalism. It shows that fighting monsters has a nasty habit of turning people into monsters themselves.

I give it four stars for the reasons mentioned above. It may not be for everyone, but it is an eye-openner to what leads people down the path to terrorism and murder.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Well Done.......2004-10-07

Khandra's books are simple with multiple levels of perception. More importantly, they are masterfully wordsmithed (the over-used term is well earned in this case). These are the kind of books that haunt you for years as they become part of your psyche.....and you see parallels to the writing all around you.......the writing truly provides you with a new perception of your own life.

Here are all the books to date, with a bit of info on each:

Swallows of Kabul (2004)
A bit hit in France, this story of 2 couples and their attempts to cope with the rule of the Taliban is mesmerizing.

Wolf Dreams (2003) 3rd of an Algerian trilogy
A story of a Moslem Jihadi, from sweet boy to fanatic fundamentalist has been recommended for insight into the driving force of suicidist youngsters.

Morituri (2003) 2nd of an Algerian trilogy
An Algerian kidnaping story that provides a compelling look at the definition of crime in a permanently impoverished society.

In The Name Of God (2000) 1st of an Algerian trilogy
A look at the phenomena of Moslem fundamentalism in Algeria, this book has strong parallels to Camu's "The Plague." In some ways it is a more modern variation on a theme of Camu's work.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-04-07

I really enjoyed this book. It followed the path of Jihadi from disaffected youth to unstoppable monster. It showed how vague idealism and vanity can create a perfect storm from which otherwise normal and ambitious young men are transformed into vicious monsters that will kill women and children. I thought the complexity of this book extended further than expected, including portrayals of strong (but amoral) women as well as redeeming grace and nobility from otherwise corrupt aristocrats. The author is often ambivalent about the competing sects in Algerian society, even though it is plain that he does not withhold moral judgment from the terrorist/protagonist. I think that the issue of our times is Islamic terorrism and Yasmina Khadra gets inside of the terrorist mind and the social-psychology of the Casbah in a way that is neither overly didactic, nor morally obtuse. I think this book exceeds "In the Name of God" both as a narrative and for showing how Islamists are a form of revolutionary at war with existing society, in spite of their pretensions of conserving Islam in pure form.

5 out of 5 stars A Bright Light on a Dark Subject.......2004-01-14

This is a book that surprised me with its insights. The author was recommended by NYT book review but the insights into the Islamic Fundamentalist culture and the violent whirlpool that a young man can be sucked into were a surprising revelation. The relatively innocent immature young man who starts out the book slowly is degraded into a monster who is to be destroyed. I often thought of the young men who flew planes into the World Trade Center and the corruption of their souls that turned them into monsters who needed to be destroyed.

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal and Hypnotic Effect.......2006-06-18

The images in this book have an ethereal and hypnotic affect depicting the reverence to nature the wolf held to the Native Americans. As two Native American children become lost and take shelter in a cave a protective wolf appears in a dream and upon awakening the wolf fulfills the dream. This allegorical tale of the beauty and wonderment that the nurturing spirit of the wolf represents is poetically told in inedible images in this wonderful book. The wolf is one with land and should never be ravaged or exploited but revered as part of the wonderment and beauty that is nature.

5 out of 5 stars Dream Wolf symbolizes trust, hope.......2001-08-24

Another Native American tale I adore. The brillant rich drawings speak when the words do not. A story of two children who place their trust into a wolf who leads them back to their home and how the wolf is honored for doing so. It is still hopeful that someday we will capture that which has been lost to us. The love of the land and honoring the animals.

STORIES TO STIR THE IMAGINATION, Volume 3:

1- PANDORAS BOX ~ Long, long ago, there lived a girl named Pandora. One day a beautiful mysterious box was left in her cottage. She was warned not to open it, but she did anyway and all of a sudden a swarm of frightfully ugly creatures flew out in all directions, bringing with them, pain and suffering. Then at last, a bright glistening fairy flew out to bring new hope to the world.

2- THE FISHERMAN AND HIS WIFE ~ A poor fisherman once caught a magic flounder who told him that he could bring anything the fisherman wanted. Instantly the fisherman wished for a cozy cottage to replace his tumbledown shack ... and the wish was granted. But his wife kept wishing for a mansion, then a palace. But when she wished to be God, the flounder was killed by a giant wave, which brought them back to the tumbledown shack. 3- THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLF ~ A young shepherd wanted excitement, so he ran through his town shouting- A wolf is attacking my sheep. Instantly, people rushed out to capture the wolf, but there was no wolf. However, the next day when a wolf did attack his sheep, no one came to help.

4- THE NUTCRACKER AND THE MOUSE KING ~ The classic Christmas story of the fantastic dream of a little girl named Marie. In it she she saw an army of mice, led by the evil Mouse King, attack her precious Nutcracker, her favorite Christmas toy. Desperately, Marie took off her slipper and threw it at the Mouse King, which killed him on the spot. Instantly the Nutcracker stood up, but now he was a handsome prince who danced through night with Marie to beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars Stories to Stir the Imagination, Album #3.......2007-07-17

Stories to Stir the Imagination: Volume 3 is a one hour audio book containing four stories: Pandora's Box, The Fisherman and His Wife, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and The Nutcracker and The Mouse King. As with all of the audio books by this publisher, this volume is a Parents' Choice Recommended product.

Stories to Stir the Imagination: Volume 3 contains stories for all ages. The first three stories in this CD (Pandora's Box, The Fisherman and His Wife, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf) are quite short containing good lessons about being honest and being content with what you are given. The third story is much longer, taking up about half of the CD. This story is quite adventurous meant to encourage creative imagination. Older children will likely find this story extremely appealing.

4 out of 5 stars very nice but a bit much for toddlers.......2006-04-27

my daughter loves the nutcracker and other classic stories and i thought id get her some to listen to in the car. the nutcracker story on this particular cd is one i have never heard before; not the one she was hoping for; it had to do with a character named "pearly pate". the reading of the stories goes a bit fast, as in, the speakers speed of speaking, in my opinion. i think these are good for kindergarten and up but a bit off for toddlers; even if they are into stories such as these.

4 out of 5 stars Sing along with this spirited bedtime wolf book.......2007-08-25

This bedtime book features singing, howling, hugging, cuddling, a care-giving dad, a sympathetic portrayal of wolves, and a mischevious mom; so it's fun to read to your toddler. A librarian wrote it, and librarians, as a general rule, know what they're doing; but in the book's efforts to help you read dynamically with your child, a couple of lame choices were made: a whole page that says "Suddenly.." or "Then..." to help remind you to build storytelling tension...that gets old after a few readings--and repetition is what happens when you read with kids. As well, the basic illustrations are simply functional, rather than delightful, expressive, or captivating. My 20-month old loved reading this book with us book a few months ago. Now he loves the page with bugs on it.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for my 3 year old!.......2004-01-20

My just turned 3 year old was given a check for books and I asked which of his favorite library books would he like to own. This one was one of the ones he wanted. Regarding the tune with which to sing the songs, the tune of This Old Man fits perfectly with all the songs the wolves sings. My son loves the songs, and also the suspense in some of the pages where I will surprise him with a tickle.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a keeper.......2003-11-10

I found this treasure at the library originally. My 2 year-old son loved it so much, I'm getting it for Christmas. It's fun and sweet. You make up your own tune to go with the wolf's lyrics. And, of course, at the end you Hoowwwwllll!!!

4 out of 5 stars Howl with the wolves.......2003-01-24

My 16 month old daughter loves to howl along with this book and act out the funny lyrics. It's fun to make up different tunes-- this book sounds different with every reader.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and laughs!.......2001-04-24

Although when Little Wolf and Big Wolf hear something in the bushes, there is a moment of pause, and potentially fright, but my son (3 1/2) thought it was just right. He was curious, and definitely wanted to know who was in the bushes, but when he found out it was Momma Wolf he laughed harder than he does with almost any other book. When I first read this on my own, I didn't think it was that impressive, but when I read it out loud to my son, I realized just how much fun this is for kids. I watched him laugh playfully at the songs, and get quiet when SOMETHING WAS IN THE BUSHES. He laughs each time we read this, which is worth every penny of the book!

Book Description

In this absorbing novel, the award-winning author David Huddle tells a provocative story involving the life of the mysterious painter Georges de La Tour and the echoes of his work across time.
An art history professor, Suzanne Nelson escapes her failing marriage by retreating into her research and the fertile world of her imagination. La Tour's ability to create luminous portraits of peasants stood in sharp contrast to his aggression toward the poor, but little information about his life exists, and Suzanne finds herself filling in the details, trying to understand how a man capable of brutality could create such beauty. Unwittingly looking to her own life and marriage, she invents La Tour's final painting sessions with a young model, a village girl. When the girl modestly disrobes for the artist, he discovers a marking on her back that she is obviously unaware of. By painting her, La Tour in effect reveals to the girl exactly who she is and who she is not. Her reaction is at once astonishing and utterly warranted. In Suzanne's mind, this encounter becomes a story of truth and lies, art and identity.
Deftly moving between the present and the seventeenth century, Huddle reveals the surprising repercussions of history and art in modern life. In the process he asks the biggest questions: How do we come to define who we are? Which secrets must remain our own and which can we justify giving away? LA TOUR DREAMS OF THE WOLF GIRL is both passionate and fascinating, a wonder of narrative invention and emotional depth.

4 out of 5 stars Weaving narratives.......2004-01-16

As I was halfway through this book, I had a couple of thoughts.

One was that it falls squarely into one of my favorite categories (what a friend of mine jokingly calls "academics in love" novels.)

Another was that the book was going to be too slight to really be worth all the craftsmanship. On this thought, I turned out to have been very wrong.

I am usually the first person to argue that a book cannot be redeemed in its ending. I dislike it very much when an author pulls some kind of spectacular deus ex machina out at the conclusion and expects the reader to extend that resolution backwards. The funny thing is that this is what Huddle does, and for a change I found that it really worked.

The book begins as a beautifully written little story about a dry and isolated art history professor in a failing marriage who daydreams a story about George La Tour (a 17th century writer) instead of interacting with her painful life. The narrative weaves between her perspective, the perspective of her husband, and the perspective of a La Tour in his last years.

It is really kind of wonderful how without me noticing it, Huddle brings all the threads together to be about something much bigger and more important than self-involvement. The book ends up being about loss and acceptance and the way we understand other people and the way it treats the subject is even stronger because of the understated way it plays its hand.

La Tour is not perfect. I could not really accept the 17th century narrative, even given the context of it being Suzanne's fantasy. Suzanne is also difficult to like, at least for much of the book. A friend of mine who read it found it very difficult to get past the nature of her character to enjoy the book.

Still, a good way to start off the New Year's reading. Recommended for fans of strong literary criticism. Bonus for armchair art critics.

3 out of 5 stars AMUSING BUT CONFUSING.......2002-10-11

I enjoyed this book very much but often felt like i was reading 2 novels. I failed to see how the 2 settings and stories, although told at a parrallel, intertwined or related. I enjoyed the Vivienne/La Tour story much more than the other and found it annoying to have read both. I was hoping the book was more in the line of Chevalier's Pearl Earring - but it was not. I am left feeling like, "ok, so....." with emptiness... i did not like the ending....

LA TOUR DREAMS OF THE WOLF GIRL is my first exposure to the work of David Huddle - and he's a very talented craftsman. The transitions between present-day Vermont (and Appalachia) and 17th century France are seamless - in the hands of a less competent writer they might easily have been clumsy and disruptive to the narrative. Huddle has a discerning eye when it comes to the human psyche and its accompanying emotional baggage, and he lays out his observations for the reader in several ways - direct, subtly oblique, and various `grey areas' in between the two.

We see La Tour through the eyes of a professor of art history at the University of Vermont, Suzanne Nelson. She is writing a dissertation on the artist, and she focuses her attention - and her imagination - on a particular painting, the last one of LaTour's life. He has chosen as his model a village girl, the daughter of the local shoemaker. We see him strut into the village with his retinue of dogs, knowing full well how the scene will play itself out before him. He will make his offer to the shoemaker, who will at first refuse to allow his daughter to pose in the nude for the artist (despite his advanced age and the unlikelihood of anything improper occurring), then the two will haggle over price and social considerations - and in the end, the deal will be made, and the girl will come to his villa to pose for him. LaTour is assured that everything will happen as he imagines it - and to a point, events unfold as he predicts. It is when the girl arrives for her first sitting, and he finds that she is both more intelligent and self-assured than he could have dreamed, that he discovers that he will indeed paint her - his advanced age and his arthritic pains had convinced him that he was merely luring her into his studio to pose for his eyes. When she disrobes for the first time before him, and he sees that she is marked on her back with a thatch of wolf-like hair, stretching from near her shoulder blade to her spine, he is transfixed - and he is further moved to discover that she knows nothing about this unique trait.

As Vivienne continues to make visits to LaTour's studio, over the course of a few months, the painting progresses. LaTour saves the addition of the wolf-patch until the last, knowing that as soon as she sees it, she will feel violated and betrayed - both by the artist and her parents. Over the course of this time, she has come to be more comfortable in the artist's presence - he has drawn her out into conversations by posing questions to her about her daily life in the village, and she has been surprised to find herself eager to talk to him. She also is amazed to realize, toward the completion of the painting, that she has been in effect lying to LaTour - that the stories she has told have been embellishments of reality, sometimes complete inventions. He has taught he to lie by giving her to opportunity to do so with impunity.

All of this is of course a product of the imaginings of Professor Nelson - as she works on her dissertation, she allows herself to be carried away into LaTour's life and times, constructing out of the facts she knows a more complete picture of a human being, all the way down to his thoughts and motives. All of this is colored by the events of her own life. Her marriage of twelve years is slowly disintegrating - eroded by time and by inattentiveness (on the part of both herself and her husband). The novel follows them from early in their lives, before they meet - the reader is given invaluable glimpses into their pasts and upbringings, allowing the forces that have formed them to be visible. They are drawn together as inexorably as they fall apart.

Unlike many contrived plots wherein spitefulness and meanness - both unfortunately common human traits - play a large part in the path lives take, there is no hard-spirited ugliness at play here. This is simply a story of lives that come together and fall apart. There is a common thread passing through the fabric of all of these characters' lives, however - LaTour and Vivienne included - they are all running from something. Not all of them are conscious of it, but it's there. Suzanne and Jack are both running from the smothering influence of their parents - his are extremely wealthy, hers are from a rural area in the Appalachians. Elly, Suzanne's acquaintance who takes Jack as a lover, is running both from and to herself - streaming away from the life she has had and toward the life she imagines she wants, all of the time actually running away from who she really is. LaTour is running desperately from death - and Vivienne is running (at least in her dreams) from the life she leads in the rural French countryside. Everybody wants something they don't think they have - and a few of them actually come to discover that they had more than they realized all along.

It is these voyages of self-discovery and longing that make this book so appealing - and the fact that Huddle has combined all of these stories into a valid whole makes this an entertaining, compelling read.

5 out of 5 stars MESMERIZING.......2002-02-03

Gorgeous restraint and clairivoyant insight reside at the center of David Huddle's second (and finest) novel. How he is able to imagine and weave together the lives of an aging art history professor at the end of her marriage and a young girl entangled in a charged mental dance with a dying painter (La Tour) is nothing short of mesmerizing. I read this book in one sitting and sat stunned at the end.

A well written book my seven year old granddaughter could read by herself, and copy the little girl in the book by making a "magic wand" to ward away the bad dreams at night. I also thank the author for including into the story how important it is for the child to talk about the dreams during the day with adults. This book was exactly what I was hoping for ! Thank you Ted Lobby so much!
