James Green nails it - a great introductory text.......2007-08-01
James Green shares his wealth of knowledge in this well-organized, informative, and extensive text with a nice touch of humor and spiritualism. His deep love for the art of herbalism shines through in this well-written piece, which flows beautifully and is a pleasure to read. The illustrations by his daughter are quite fitting and match the herbal aesthetic as well. A must-have for any budding herbalist (and worth picking up for the intermediate as well!)
My Most Used Herbal Book........2007-07-29
A true compendium of information. I have learned so much from this book and constantly refer to it when preparing remedies. I am giving it 5 stars because it is so superior to anything else written, however, it only covers a limited amount of herbs and their uses. Most of them easily wildcrafted in Northern California. Granted some herbs are meant to be used with caution and most individuals involved with using herbs learn these quickly. No one wants to get themselves or anyone else sick. I just wish James Green had covered a few more than the 35 in depth. But, it is still a wonderful book nonetheless.
The best on making your own herbal medicines........2007-07-15
James Green really did a good job. Other reviewers outline the book's content in great detail, so I'll spare that here. I am not a professional herbalist, although I make and use herbal medicines here and there for various problems. I always consult this handbook- Green is very clear and thorough with his step-by-step directions on how to make these medicines. He doesn't discuss exactly what herbs to use too much- but there's many other sources for that. This book is all about the procedure of making medicine, not what to use. He also discusses ethical harvesting of wild herbs. Making herbal medicine is easy and enjoyable, and you'll save a ton of money.
excellent book.......2007-07-07
I wish I had purchased this book a long time ago. Excellent reading and very informative with a humorist air.
Wonderful Book.......2007-06-06
This book is a wonderful introduction into making herbal medicines. It goes into detail on how the processes work, and why, as well as giving a large variety of types of remedies you can make. I would buy it again.

Customer Reviews:
Great Soap Book!.......2007-09-25
I purchased three books on soapmaking, and in my opinion, this one is by far the very best! The author's instructions are clear, concise, and the techniques are simplified and de-mystified over other soapmaking books. I made my first batch of "Anne's Shea Butter Supreme" today, and the soap turned out beautifully without a glitch. I also had a newbie question about a product I purchased, so I emailed the author. Anne responded back quickly and was very helpful, a fact that I greatly appreciated! I can't wait to use my soap and make more of the recipes from the book.
I LOVE This Book!.......2007-08-14
Anne makes soapmaking simple -- I'm a newbie and I'm still learning. This book gives just enough information to educate, without overwhelming. She challenges the "soap theology" of most of the other books, but it makes sense.
I highly recommend it!
Great things come in small packages!.......2007-07-09
This book has everything you need to start making soap. The instructions and illustrations for the cold-process of soap making are easy to follow, the recipes are simple and produce great soap every time. Anne's Shea Butter Soap is a very versatile recipe, and her references to other sources are invaluable. Would love to see the author produce a volume of soap recipes!
smart soaping.......2007-05-07
You can't go wrong with this book. If you get anybook on soaping this is the one you need.
Great Book for Beginners.......2007-04-23
This was my very first soapmaking book and I love it! Anne makes soapmaking easy with her well written instructions and great recipes.

Customer Reviews:
Great trilogy.......2006-10-02
The final installment of Shinn's trilogy which began with The Safe-Keeper's Secret (2004) and The Truth-Teller's Tale (2005) features a young girl Kellen whose mother is convinced that she is a boy, and treats her as thus. When Kellen begins school at age 11, she meets Gryffin, a young man who needs assistance walking because of a birth defect, but whose mind soaks up information like a sponge. Kellen and Gryffin become inseparable throughout their school years, supporting one another in their difficult situations. When Gryffin needs shelter from his uncle's abuse, Kellen helps him and they become friends with many of the new travelers who visit their small town's new stagecoach stop. When it is discovered that Gryffin has taken on the magic of the Dream-Maker, Kellen has to let him go discover his powers on his own, until she follows, once again in the guise of a young man, to find that wishes do come true no matter who you are.
Not just for young adults.......2006-07-10
This short novel is the third in Shinn's series involving young people in a semimagical realm. In this tale, we learn the story of Kellen and Gryffin. Both characters have a harsh live. Kellen's mother refuses to acknowledge that she is a girl. Gryffin is crippled and abused by his uncle. Together, they gain the strength to grow beyond their situation and find love along the way. While this is set as a young adult book, don't let that scare you away. It's enjoyable by all.

The Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's director.......2007-06-12
Book is well illustrated, with lots of good information on period furniture.
Gentleman and Cabinet Maker Director.......2005-08-03
Excellent service and book as good as or better than originally thought to be. Would definitely order from them again.
Don't be intimidated.......2003-01-09
This book is a classic and all the other reviews are right-on. If you're interested in woodworking--especially creating antique reproduction designs buy this book. It's cheap. Now if you're a woodworking novice, you'll likely be intimidated at the design detail saying "how can anyone ever carve that!" and you'll be tempted to throw it on the shelf and forget it. That's OK. If you keep doing woodworking, you'll find yourself coming back to look at Chippendale. You'll go to antique shows and museums and see the real thing and eventually gain the confidence to give it a try. The book is inspiring in its design. You should own it if you're interested in finewoodworking because over the years, your comfort with it will be a measure of your own woodworking maturity.
The book that made Chippendale famous........1998-11-16
The ball and claw foot is perhaps the one thing most commonly associated with Chippendale, but it is omitted entirely since it had gone out of fashion by the time he wrote the book. Instead, he includes Rococo, Chinese, and Gothic designs. The Rococo designs are extremely heavily ornamented, and fashioned in the most outlandish curved shapes: if you ever thought Pablo Picasso and "modern art" was too far out, take a look at these! The ribbon back chairs struck me as a particularly interesting design. The Chinese designs are far more subdued, and most have a bit of a swastika motif built into them. The editor for the modern version has added an appendix with several photographs of original Chippendale era furniture (not necessarily built by Chippendale himself), including several chosen to show that it really was possible to build the more elaborate designs. This is perhaps the single most historically significant book on furniture design ever written, and no furniture library would be complete without it.
large, catalog style of baroque & neo-classical design.......1998-04-30
This large catalog style paper back book is an excellent reference for architecture, furniture and design. Black drawing on newsprint paper, this book was a catalog of Thomas Chippendale's furniture shop in England and gives detailed motifs for the antique dealer and cabinet maker alike.

very old.......2007-08-21
bought this for inspiration and was very disapointed! this book is both very dated and very simple (some pages had pictures with a few stickers thrown in the blak spots). the only good scrap page is the one on the cover.
Useful but not exceptional.......2006-02-08
I recently bought this book and was surprised at the pages included. Overall, it has several very different layouts and some neat ideas for special topic pages (champagne bridal shower, leaving limo cutout). But, the pages were all sent in by "real people," so they do not at all have the polished look of the "memory masters" who usually compile Memory Makers books. I would say the level is intermediate, with a huge lack of advanced techniques. Antiquing, dry embossing, embossing with powders and a heat tool, embellishments, tags, vellum, use of computers, paint, and fabrics are not included at all. These are pretty standard in today's scrapbooking trends. The examples use stickers a lot, matted pictures, and cut-outs. There are some neat ideas, quilling in particular, and I really like the heritage pages. Because the pages were sent in, any specialty techniques are sparce and only given a few pages as examples. I agree this book is outdated overall, but is still a great place for a jump-start.
Very beautiful..........2005-04-02
It is a very beautiful book. I have relatives who were married last year and we have tons of pictures to scrapbook. I was out of ideas, because I feel they have to be so perfect and elegant. This gave me plenty more. Thanks!
disappointed.......2003-11-01
Flipped through this book quickly and knew I wouldn't be using any of the techniques. Extremely dated and basic, especially for a book written in 2000.
Beautiful, elegant ... and yes time consuming.......2002-11-27
I have been married more than five years, and am still assembling my wedding scrapbook (other projects, work and children keep taking priority). Over the years, I have assembled quite a number of books and magazine articles about wedding pages. This book is my number one reference - the one I keep coming back to.
Other books will show you pages that can be done more quickly, but is that what you want to do for one of the landmark events of your life? Not every page in my scrapbook will look like the ones in this book. But, it's nice to know that at least a few of the pages were labors of love inspired by some very artistic people.
If you have only one or two pages in your wedding album that are as attractive as the ones in this book, it will have been worth the purchase.

Women with savoir faire and verve, women who inform and inspire, women who know how to get what they want out of a room-Designing Women takes a fresh look at sixteen contemporary trendsetters. The exclusive group includes Muriel Brandolini, Mariette Hines Gomez, Tricia Guild, Victoria Hagan, Holly Hunt, Charlotte Moss, and Catherine Memmi-innovators whose highly individual styles have strongly influenced the direction of design. In this inspirational book, these icons of interior decoration lead by example: Striking portraits of their personal surroundings reveal how they bring their professional philosophies home. A resource list provides contact information for the designers' favorite sources.
Customer Reviews:
Show me the inspiration!.......2002-12-10
Lovely to look at, lovely to hold.... but that is about it! Whereas the photographs are masterful, there is little beyond the pictures, not even a rudimentary, cursory, or trifling insight or inspiration. One does expect something after all from a living room tome. It is truly the book that doesn't even begin to give. I am glad I purchased this book used as I would have felt used and abused to have paid full price for this creativity bypass and abyss.
No WOW factor, but still nice to look at.......2002-04-27
The designers showcased have marvelous taste, but there is nothing here that was impressive. The book is beautifully photographed, but that's about it. My suggestion-Wait until it's on clearance or borrow it from the library. C+
Ho-Hum- Another coffee table book.......2002-02-22
As someone who was looking for exciting new design and especially from a woman's perspective, I was not wowed by this book. Instead I got good pictures but little depth. I can pick up any magazine today and see the same thing. Not very interesting or inspiring.
A fabulous book - and useful to boot!.......2001-08-28
i love design books, but truthfully, some are way too far out there for my tastes - and then some are ho-hum and uninformative. this is a really, really great book - not only are the designers extremely interesting individuals - but their personal tastes are actually out there for the taking. i might not have loved each of their homes - but i loved the fact that THEY loved them! also great about this book - and maybe my favorite part (aside from the TERRIFIC photos - wow) are the super great hints each designer gives at the end of her segment - they are actual USEABLE and DOABLE!
Designing Women.......2001-08-06
As an architect dealing with spectacular spaces and inspirational forms & materials designing my own home, the 5 stars on this lead me to say, "OK, let's get to interior design". I have to add my evaluation to prevent others from thinking this is fabulous. I found it so ordinary and uninspiring I was flabergated by the reviews I had read. I am glad there are women out there designing, and each to her own taste, but I found little here. It is the first book I have ever returned to Amazon.
