Book Description

Imagine that, on the night before she is to die under the blade of the guillotine, Marie Antoinette leaves behind in her prison cell a diary telling the story of her life—from her privileged childhood as Austrian Archduchess to her years as glamorous mistress of Versailles to the heartbreak of imprisonment and humiliation during the French Revolution.

Carolly Erickson takes the reader deep into the psyche of France’s doomed queen: her love affair with handsome Swedish diplomat Count Axel Fersen, who risked his life to save her; her fears on the terrifying night the Parisian mob broke into her palace bedroom intent on murdering her and her family; her harrowing attempted flight from France in disguise; her recapture and the grim months of harsh captivity; her agony when her beloved husband was guillotined and her young son was torn from her arms, never to be seen again.

Erickson brilliantly captures the queen’s voice, her hopes, her dreads, and her suffering. We follow, mesmerized, as she reveals every detail of her remarkable, eventful life—from her teenage years when she began keeping a diary to her final days when she awaited her own bloody appointment with the guillotine.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.......2007-09-27

I just finished The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette and I really enjoyed it while I was reading it. I have to admit that I am pretty ignorant about lots and lots of world history and when I was younger I didn't enjoy History class much, if at all. But this novel presents history in a very accessible way. It wasn't overwhelming with details...in a good way. And it left me wanting to read more about Marie Antoinette.

I would have given the novel four stars if the journal style of it had been true to form but the dialog was written in the third person narrative. Which I enjoyed reading but it's certainly not how a diary would be written.

I think this would be a wonderful novel for students learning about the French Revolution and for people like me who have never read anything about Marie Antoinette. It's a great starting point.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings on this one..........2007-08-08

Yet another fictionalized version of the life and times of one of France's most famous Queens. I am addicted to historical fiction such as this, and the detailing of her personal trials was very appealing to me. Also, diary format novels tend to be easier to read, although they usually lack depth. Erickson's vision of Marie is sympathetic, yet alludes to her naive personality traits - this is done very well, giving her very human-like qualities and a conscience, while at the same time addressing her self-righteous faults. The dialogue is well written (something I have trouble with myself) and the entire book is a good example of showing mounting despair and the culmination of events, as well as time progression. That said, the dates were strangely off (not historically, but mathematically ... for example, she said that something happened two years before, but according to the dates in the book, it was less than a year) and the entries about Marie being in love are tedious and trite. The author skipped over important events. If they are even covered, they lack detail and description. In fact, the entire tome uses repetitious images and doesn't have much visual imagery. Of course, the journal entries could just be a personificaition of the author's purpose - that is, to show a vapid, almost shallow girl mature into a woman of strength and pride - by using ideas over and over to show childishness. In the end, though, this was most definitely a page turner: gripping, sometimes shocking (see page 316), and emotionally filling. The pages of the brutality of the French Revolution were particularly eye opening for me. I found myself wanting more, Erickson's portrayal of Marie being both fascinating and quite beautiful in its own simplistic way.

4 out of 5 stars THE PSYCHE OF A DOOMED QUEEN.......2007-07-23

I particularly enjoyed the diary format of The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette. It illustrated the hypothetical Marie's state of mind from her early teens up to her death by guillotine and made for a quick, entertaining read.

Author Carolly Erickson makes it clear that this is a work of fiction, not fact, but her attention to historical detail, embellished by her beautifully drawn characterizations of Marie, Louie and Axel Ferson captures every nuance of their convoluted personal relationships. The reader occasionally finds themselves feeling some sympathy Marie, the mother, as well as for the weak King Louis XVI, since it was never his desire to ascend the throne. One does wonder why he and Marie ignored the Parisian storm that was building for a dozen or more years until it became the violent hurricane known as the French Revolution. (I suppose since the outcome of the story had already been written by history, the author chose to explore the logical steps that would culminate with a trip to the guillotine).

Cheers to Ms. Erickson for her imaginative, enthralling chronicle. One can almost believe this diary was actually committed to paper by the woman who - in reality - - was much too busy living to ever have the time or inclination to pen this journal.

3 out of 5 stars The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette.......2007-07-21

I found this book to be exactly what it set out to be. Entertainment. If your looking for a 100 percent true to history account of Marie Antoinette's life, look elsewhere. If your looking for a lazy summer read this book is for you. It has all the workings of a great "soap opera", monarchy, money, marriage, love affaris, partying,ect..

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-06-25

Erickson's main objective (rather than argument) was to imaginatively elaborate on the actual lives of Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI. Erickson invented dialogue and characters. Entries into the journal recited creative dialogue and the deeply personal thoughts of Marie Antoinette. The characters that were created further transformed this book into a spellbinding read. The invented characters of Amelie, Erick, and Sophie enriched the read by evoking emotions from Marie Antoinette, such as lust, love, and hatred.

5 out of 5 stars Best in a long while.......2001-06-01

A collection of short stories, _Hidden Years_ fills in some missing spots in the storyline, mostly from the time period before the 'Shards'and Kings of the Broken Wheel timeline. It was really nice to see that a story could indeed be covered in the equivalent of one issue of a comic book. My favorites are the story depicted on the cover and the origin story for Skywise. No spoilers here, just go out and get it.

5 out of 5 stars The most spectacular of all Elfquest graphic novels!.......2000-10-16

Wendy is arguably the best comic book artist of our time, and this little gem has got to be her greatest work ever. This is the very first book by the Pinis that I bought. (Which may I recommend that you don't get this first. You will be very confused, even though the stories are great in themselves.) This one book started the Elf-mania in my family. Now, I buy all of them, even the off-the-wall side stories that are more humorous than anything (see "New Blood" and "Worldpool"). It's really great artwork and rich color are the best. And Strongbow is a heartthrob.;)

5 out of 5 stars Perfect 10.......2000-06-01

Wendy Pini has certainly outdone herself! Her artwork has always been versatile, changing to fit the mood of the story. In this graphic novel, she used vivid watercolors to tell the tale. It's amazing! The stories are also superb, in the honored tradition of Elfquest. My favorite story is the one about Tyleet and her adopted human cub, Little Patch. Wendy Pini is definetly my favorite artist! :)

5 out of 5 stars The Pinis are back in a great, flaring nova!.......2000-04-09

In a slightly smaller format than the original paperback volumes, the Elfquest tales that occurred between the great espiodes of the elfin adventures on The World of Two Moons are all presented in full, glaring colors that really blinds your eyes which are more accustomed to the gentler tones of the colorized comic-book collections. Here you meet Strongbow and his wolffriend, Kyavek and her winged boyfriend, Ember and her coming-of-age discoveries, Tyleet and her foster kid, and Skywise and his ill-fated parents. Personally, I feel that the gentle little Tyleet had inherited her mother's child-hunger, so she had a chance to fulfill her aching maternal instincts with an abandoned infant from a nearby human camp. Pretty sappy, in my opinion. But all the Elfquest fans get to unlock even more mysteries about their most favorite elfin characters as well as color-saturated new stories to boot!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing collection of emotional stories about Elfquest!.......1999-06-18

This compelling book contaning 5 of Wendy and Richard Pini's Hidden Years comic books. Which in my opinion are well thought, written, and drawn. These stories can make you cry, and they can help you understand the mysterious world of Elfquest, which few know but love. This must be at the top of every Elfquest lover's list, for it is a very very good book.

Book Description

What you need to know about The Hidden Key to Harry Potter:

1) It is the first critical study to unlock the inner meaning of Harry Potter by treating the series seriously as literature along the lines of Charles Dickens and Jane Austen.

2) It is the first exposé to identify Joanne Rowling as a Christian who consciously writes Christian Fantasy in the tradition of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien.

3) It is the first full-fledged effort to predict Potter's future course in detail - an audacious and thought-provoking adventure offered to fellow enthusiasts.

4) It is the first Muggle textbook suitable for use at Hogwarts - bringing humor, fun, and WOW! excitement to the "serious" business of Pottermania.

Low Road critics have panned the bestselling Harry Potter novels as "the literary equivalent of fast food" and as a gateway to the occult. But no one has explained the worldwide popularity of Ms. Rowling's fiction or read it as one would read Tolkien, Hemingway, or Shakespeare. The Hidden Key takes the High Road to understanding Harry Potter's success, through an exploration of the series' structure, themes, and symbolism.

The astonishing conclusion of this investigation is that Ms. Rowling, demonized by some Christian critics because of the magical setting of her books, is ironically writing the most charming and challenging Christian fiction for children since Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia. The Hidden Key demonstrates that all the Potter books teach Christian doctrines - sometimes with subtlety, often baldly - in their plot, imagery, and character development. Lambasted by critics who have not read her books closely or are unfamiliar with traditional Christian literature, Ms. Rowling's genius has been overlooked despite her books' success.

A lover and teacher of the Great Books - including the great children's books he reads his seven children - Mr. Granger applies his knowledge of classical philosophy and Christian traditions to reveal the secret message that explains the magic power of Harry Potter.

Find out these secrets inside:

* What is the hidden key to Harry Potter?
* Is Harry's magic dangerous - or quite the opposite?
* What is the evidence that Rowling is a Christian novelist?
* Is the author an "Inkling"? How have we been so bamboozled?
* Who is the real-world model for Gilderoy Lockhart?
* Who is Harry, really? Why does Lord Voldemort want him dead?
* Will Wormtail kill Voldemort as Wormtongue killed Saruman?
* What may happen in the upcoming Potter books?
* How does it all end? - an UNAUTHORIZED prediction.

3 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking but Needs Typist.......2007-03-20

This book has some great thought provoking ideas but these are masked by the many typos throughout. In one particular paragraph the 9 errors caught were extremely distracting. It is ashame the errors are so much, I think this book could be taken very seriously if it was edited better.

I love the diagrams and maps throughout the book, they really helped to illustrate the points. His view on the topic of Harry and religion is interesting. It has helped me in my constant defense for the books (against Christian friends, family, and neighbors). I think in a couple of sections, though, he pushes the envelope a tad too far and some areas seem like rambling. It is in need of better organization, in some spots I felt like I was reading a high school research paper.

All in all a good read...but requires patience!

5 out of 5 stars The "Hidden Key" Revealed by Sound Scholarship.......2005-09-25

Anyone interested in digging deeper into the richness and multi-layered meaning of the Harry Potter books will be well rewarded by reading The Hidden Key to Harry Potter. Far from mere fantasy books for children, or, even more erroneous, books glorifying "witchcraft", the stories are revealed to be carefully planned, researched, and written according to the traditions which enrich all outstanding fiction. J.K. Rowling's education and literary influences are carefully delineated and applied to the critique of each of her novels; and, if the author (John Granger) occasionally goes into bewildering detail about some little known, but vital, subject such as alchemy, a careful reading of the material will reward the reader interested in literary history, the meaning of symbols, and the sources for a vast deal of Rowling's symbology. She is shown to be applying once well-known symbols with care and deliberation to support her themes; in other words, much of what the reading public has assumed was "made up" by a writer with a fertile imagination is demonstrated to be well-established historical and literary lore which other, highly gifted writers before her have employed with great success. While some of Granger's interpretations may seem a bit of a stretch--and he admits that a certain amount of speculating and educated guesswork enters into his critique--enough of it is so convincing and holds together so well that his theories come across as the best of explanations going for the popularity of these novels. While out of print, "Hidden Key" is a real treasure for Harry Potter fans; much of its content has been rewritten in Granger's current book, "Finding God in Harry Potter." A scholarly book, richly rewarding and wonderfully researched.

5 out of 5 stars Magic and Meaning.......2005-04-04

Responses to Harry Potter range from simple, uncluttered enthusiasm to pompous critiques and even outraged disdain. John Granger's book The Hidden Key to Harry Potter is a highly personal, but well-read and creatively argued case for viewing JK Rowling's work as part of the High Road tradition of symbolic Christian literature, perhaps best known in Lewis' Narnia Chronicles.
The Hidden Key is a must-read for any serious Harry Potter fan, or indeed any serious reader of fiction. What I love about it is its combination of solid research and personal conviction, a rare marriage nowadays. It reads like the work of a human being who stands for something, something of which I suspect Ms Rowling, and Harry, would approve.

1 out of 5 stars Analyze this?.......2004-08-19

This is a meaningless attempt to find meaning in works of fiction by attempting to psychoanalyze the author, her readers and the fictional characters. Too dry and boring for younger readers and adults alike. This appears to be nothing more than an attempt to make more money off the Harry Potter craze.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Enlightening.......2004-08-13

This is a great book that dives into some of the nuances of the Harry Potter series. It goes into a very supportive and in depth literary analyses of why Harry Potter is such an awesome series: Rowling's uses of symbolism, freedom of choice, and various other themes riddle throughout the first four books. He defends it as a literary work against the detractors of the Potter series and does a very good job at it. If you want to dig a little into the deeper meanings that can be found in Harry Potter, this is a good book for anyone. Just be careful. Because Granger wrote it before Order of the Phoenix, some of his predictions about what's going to happen in the future do get a bit silly, and sometimes preposterous. But, hey, this was before the public was graced with book 5.

5 out of 5 stars Need a serious laugh?.......2006-07-11

Of all of Nora Roberts' books--and yes, I've read them all--this is my favorite. It is undoubtedly her funniest. I first read it six years ago. I loaned it to a friend who forgot to return it, so I had to buy it again. I'm on my fourth copy now, I've read it probably ten times, but I keep on loaning it out and reordering and re-reading.

The characters are lovingly developed, and the dialogue quick and genuine.

Dora, our heroine, is a gutsy gal who takes no gruff off anyone, especially her new tenant, ex-cop Jeb Skimmerhorn. They're a recipe for great romantic sparks and hot sexual tension.

This is truly Nora at her very finest. I wish she'd write another just like it. Or almost like it!

3 out of 5 stars Not the usual NR great read..........2006-04-14

I love library sales where I can go and scarf up the older hardback books by my favorite authors, which by the way, Nora Roberts happens to be just that...one of my favorites. But Nora sort of let me down on this one. And there are enough reviews about this book that I don't need to go into more plot description. Let me just say the first two chapters were a total bore to me because I don't need all the fancy description of antiques and paintings and jewelry. Actually, I could care less. So I felt a lot of the pages were filled with words that could have been left out, allowing the reader to get to the heart of the story. And if that had been the case, then I think this would have been a wonderful story. HOWEVER, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Roberts created a certain style of writing from the very beginning that set her apart from the rest as a great romance writer. And to those who've read enough of her earlier romance novels, then they know exactly what I'm talking about. This book didn't come across with that great Nora Roberts style of writing to me. Guess every book with this author's name on it can't be a 5-star, but she's still doing great.

4 out of 5 stars Richly Rewarding.......2006-04-03

Actually, I would give this book 4-1/2 stars. Being a Nora-addict, I spend most of my reading time enjoying her many novels. This story brought me back to the Dream Trilogy where the girls opened the shop "Pretenses." Isadora Conroy is a young lady from a family of actors who decides that while acting is in her blood and enjoyable, she much rather run her antique shop. She and her sister partake on an buying trip, puchasing, unbeknownst to them, items that are a cover-up to several extremely valuable and very expensive original antiques, including an original Monet painting. Enter Jeddiah Skimmerhorn, rich, good looking and an ex-captain of the police force who is trying to sort out his own tragic loss of his sister while on the job; this event being the cause of his resignation from the force. Jed decides to leave the mansion he was raised in and go to a no-frills, comfortable apartment way of life where he plans on being able to live the life of a hermit. Dora, happy with life and very much the extravert, happens to be the landlord of the apartment he rents and this is where our story takes off. The characters are very entertaining and the story never lets your down. Dora's family, mom, dad, sister and kids are a very enjoyable and entertaining group. There is comedy, romance, intrigue and espionage. "Hidden Riches" is certainly a story worthy of reading.

4 out of 5 stars I was pleased.......2005-06-14

I enjoyed this book. I enjoy romance books, but I cant stand to have them cheesy. I like a little romantic suspense, i don't like having everything a girl wants to read about being in one book all together and having it all predictable. If that makes any sense... But this book didn't have that as much, so I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed Dora and Jeds "words" between them. Sarcastic smart-assy remarks, I really enjoyed. They made me laugh and think how real life they could be.

5 out of 5 stars Much Better Than the TV Movie!.......2007-06-27

The title first caught my attention as a TV Movie, that seemed like a nice, romantic story, along with plenty of struggles for characters of its historical time, and included Christian inspiration. In my search for the book - which I knew had to be better than the movie - I was happy to find out that Lynn Austin is an author of so many historical, Christian novels. I am close to the end of Hidden Places, and don't want to put it down. I can't decide who my favorite character is: Aunt Batty, Walter, Gabe, or Eliza. This book is full of struggles and hope. It shows how the characters keep their Faith in those difficulties of life.

I recently bought another one of Lynn Austin's titles. I love her style of historical, Christian fiction. I am hooked on Lynn Austin! Keep on writing! We're waiting for more!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie.......2007-01-10

This book was made into a Hallmark movie. The movie does not do this book justice. The book is much better and tells you things that are left out of the movie. The book is more in depth on the character relationships than the movie and gives you character background information. Excellent Read!

. . . and things not being what they seem. Lynn Austin weaves the consequences of bitterness, deceit into a satisfying tale of redemption and fresh starts. Lots of heart, some humor and a whole lot of trying to figure out why people do what they do.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-01-25

This is an excellent book. I could not put it down! I loved the characters. I am new to Christian fiction and am finding it just as good as other fiction out there and a more wholesome read.

5 out of 5 stars You can't hide forever.......2005-08-08

I loved this book. In fact I have read it three times, and when I get it back (I lent it out) I will read it again. The main woman in this story was hiding/ running from God, her dad, but most of all herself. Eventually it all caught up with her when she found out that she could not make it without the ones who love her. Mixed in with it all is a beautiful love story that any girl/ woman would cry over (and I did several times). I loved this book, and one day when I have little girls, I know that they will love it to.

5 out of 5 stars with imagination and ideas like no other book out there.......2007-06-08

Rocketo is like no other book on the shelf. Every new issue seems to brings new races, characters, locations, etc without ever feeling like its forced. And as such, its one of the few books that even in trade format you read one issue a day and still feel your reading a whole adventure (each issue is 32 pages without ads), thats how much is packed in every chapter. "bang for your buck" indeed.

This volume wraps up the first of four proposed "books" of the adventures of Rocketo.

Frank Espinosa is quite possibly the Jack Kirby of our generation.

I LOVE THE ACTION, THE SURPRISES, IT SHOWS EACH CHARACTER THEIR PERSONALITY, FRUSTRATIONS, DESIRES, HAPPINESS, AND OTHE EMOTIONS.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing.......2007-03-17

Though it seems like hot ninjas and yaoi should be a recipe for one yummy manga, SHINOBU KOKORO: HIDDEN HEART leaves a reader's appetite less than satisfied.

The book is a collection of stories that focus on a school of sorts for young wannabe ninjas. The sensei's got a thing for his pupil, and through various 'training sessions' that revolve more around having sex than learning anything else, this certainly isn't a typical dojo! But the stories suffer from terribly weak plots, uninteresting dialog and artwork that looks pretty in some panels and scratchy/coarse in most. I'm sensing the mangaka might have been rushed to meet a few deadlines during the initial serialized release of this manga in Japan.

There are some redeeming qualities, however, the most important one being the abundance of love scenes! For a quick yaoi fix, SHINOBU does it's job nicely. But for collectors who would rather save their hard-earned cash for more worthwhile reads, skip it.

Re-read-ability for this manga is a "4", meaning I probably won't pick it up again, but would give away to a friend if s/he were interested.

3 out of 5 stars Hot Sex, Scant Plot.......2007-03-06

First of all, I have to say that, as the title indicates, there are a lot of sex scenes in here. Pretty hot ones, too. And it's about the most uncensored I've ever seen in a yaoi manga.

However, the plot is....let's call it lacking.

By the way, this is spoilers galore down here.

Really. I spoil everything.

I'm serious.

Story one: Ninja-in-training+Ninja master. This arc is split into two stories. Part One basically consists of secks, love confession, and more secks. Story Two is basically sex in a schoolboy outfit. I cannot stress how ridiculously everything that happens in the story is obviously there for the sole purpose of instigating sex.

Story two: Two ninjas. Confession, sex. One falls off a mountain. Now this would be a good plot twist, if the other ninja didn't find him about two pages later completely unharmed. Sex ensues

Story three: Boy and Snow Spirit. It's never specified how young this boy is, but it's not so young as to give readers the icks. Some may call this shota, I personally don't. This story isn't half-bad. VERY fluffy, romancey, never any conflict to speak of, never any plot to speak of for that matter.

If you're looking for some quick hot sex fix, go for this. But be warned. I count myself as somebody who will overlook some plot gaps for a good romance. But this, I found myself rolling my eyes at. Good for hot yaoi, bad for good plot.

5 out of 5 stars My first Yaoi.......2007-02-09

I'm surprise i even picked this up one day. but ever since i got it, i've become hooked on Yaoi. My guy friends run away when i even say the word....and my best friends giggle as they look at the books with me.

I LOVED this. Nice cute couples and stories, not to mention nice art and sexy scenes. The only problem i had with it is that the stories are short yes....but...a little too short. I like Yaoi series more then collections of short stories, but overall i loved this manga!

5 out of 5 stars Very sweet plot and beautiful art!.......2006-05-01

I really like this yaoi novel because there are three diff stories in one. The art is simply amazing, a must have for a yaoi fan!

4 out of 5 stars Handeland has done it again!.......2007-10-09

Claire has returned to her hometown of Lake Bluff, Georgia following the death of her father, who was the town's Mayor. Running from a secret in her past, she sets out to dedicate herself to fulfilling the Mayoral duties of her late father, a position she never dreamed she would have taken considering her past position of Anchor Woman. Among her new duties is to welcome a caravan of gypsy's that have been hired to entertain the community during the Full Moon Festival. With her childhood friend/Sheriff, Grace, she eventually finds that the traveling Gypsies are not what they appear, especially the ruggedly sexy Malachi Cartwright, who excites her beyond words. Just who and what is this mysterious traveler is why you have to read the book and find out.

Hidden Moon is typical Handeland, and full of interesting characters and plot twists. It is easy to read and proves to be a wonderful paranormal romance that you will enjoy reading.

The only minor criticism that I had is although we get to see our favorites, Elise and Monster Hunter Extraordinaire Edward, there were several characters that appear to be unusual that I wanted to know more about, but I am assuming that they will appear in future books. For example, there was something mysterious about Joyce, the Mayor's right hand and about Grace, who was constantly running around, under the moon naked, with no other explanation that....."I like to worship nature". But, because I know that that may be foreshadowing of future storylines to come, I will not hold that against Handeland.

5 out of 5 stars Another great one........2007-10-07

I have to say that when i know Lori Handeland has a new Nightcreature novel coming out, i buy it without question. they are all really good. and this one is just great.

5 out of 5 stars Superb writing........2007-10-03

As always, I have certain authors I look forward to next in their series. Lori Handeland is no exception. Her Nightcreature "moon" books are all tantalizing and exciting. You may know what's going to happen, but she delights in surprising you. These mostly wolf shapeshifters wind up being lovable characters, and you can't help but hope it all works out for them.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Moon.......2007-09-23

Handeland has successfully kicked butt with this series. Lucky number seven in the series and still going strong. I don't think I've read a bad one, yet. I love the fact that she introduces new and versatile characters in each book. Not only that, she introduces new and strange creatures. Hey, after all, it is called A "nightCREATURE Novel." Her books are romantic, action-packed, mysterious, and even a bit creepy. Her female characters are strong and independent. Even when suffering through a traumatic, life-altering episode in their life, she doesn't turn them into mushy, I-Need-a-man-to-save-me-and-make-me-whole, trauma victims. On the contrary, her characters are everything BUT victims.

In Hidden Moon, the new mayor in the small back-country town is stepping into her father's shoes and discovering that they were a bit more difficult to fill than she expected. Then the one event that her town depends on, tourist-wise, to survive is plagued by a strange werewolf-like creature. Could it be the sexy, gypsy-leader, whose group arrived as entertainment the cause of all the problems? Claire and her life long best friend (the sheriff) team up to discover, hunt down, and research the problem.

PLEASE, PLEASE let the next book involve her best friend, Grace (i.e. the sheriff). She was an absolute gas.

4 out of 5 stars Nightcreature Series Keeps Rocking 4-1/2 stars.......2007-09-14

A great addition to the series and paranormal romance genre. Can't wait for #8!!
Bringing in new myths, legends and societies to the series that has pretty much centered on werewolves Handeland is keeping the series fresh. I have a feeling she has so many more intriguing stories ahead.
The country girl leaves for big city life, returns broken and rebounds even stronger worked pretty well. I loved the banter between the heroine Claire and her best friend Grace. Our hero, Malachi, lived up to the uber sexy image I expect from paranormal alpha males. Would love to see a Malachi walking out of my lake! We get suspense, magic, wit, romance and education into a society that has been around for centuries.
The only thing I found unbelievable was the old fart council members drinking Bud Light. Guys that old & cranky drink straight Bud :-)
Handeland, Kenyon, Sizemore, Feehan etc. fans won't be disappointed.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Hidden Passions.......2007-10-01

The quality of the book arriving to me was in perfect condition. I have no complaints. As for the quality of the actual book, I'm not finished with it yet but so far so good.

    5 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-05-30

I loved the book! I'm a big fan of the soap Passions and it was interesting to read about the things that went on years before the show started. It was all very good except the ending was very strange, it seemed like there should have been more there. Over all it was a great book, but you probably would have to watch the show to really like it and understand it.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Reading.......2007-01-10

I bought this book as a gift for my daughter who is a loyal "Passions" fan. She enjoyed the book more than words can explain. She has already read the book twice and is started on reading it for the third time. It gave her alot of info that the soap opera has not. She is very pleased with the book. It was truly a wonderful gift from her mom to her. Thank you.

2 out of 5 stars A nice, trashy, escapist read, but ..........2006-02-10

Why did Passions hype this book only to disregard the so-called history Hidden Passions revealed? Really insulting, if you ask me; I bought Hidden Passions the week it came out, and less than a year later *poof* most of the history laid out in the book has been changed.

In Hidden Passions, Eve is the only child of well-to-do parents, later on we find out that not only does she have a sister, but that the family was poor. I could go on, but I don't watch Passions anymore for a very good reason.

So, if you want to spend eight bucks on glorified fanfiction, go right ahead. If you're looking to read something that sheds some insight on the older characters' histories, forget it, Passions changes the motivations and histories of the characters like a normal person changes underwear.

5 out of 5 stars Great background to the Passions show!!.......2005-09-29

I really enjoyed reading this book, as it portrays most of the background from the current Passions show. It tells pretty much the background details of everything. Of course, if you watch the show, you know some of these details as they've been revealed througout the show, but nothing is like having them in this book, and it was really great! The only weird thing that I thought was that they didn't mention Katherine's sister much. Still a great read!!
