5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-06-12

My son was so excited because we planted seeds a nd watched what happened in "real' life as explained by the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for Young Curious Minds..........2006-05-30

As a 3rd Grade School Teacher, I found this book instrumental to my lessons on plant life. Ms. Drizzle and her class answer many of the questions my students come up with before we've read the book so I know that we're reading the right materials for our lessons. Great series for the imagination and for provoking interest in the sciences early in the child's development.

3 out of 5 stars The earlier books are much better.......2004-09-12

We were given a copy of "Magic Schoolbus and the Ocean Floor" as a gift. I then bought "Dinosaurs" and "Senses." There is a difference between the books written only by Joanna Cole and the later books that are basically a comic-book version of the TV show. It takes us a solid 45 minutes to read "Senses", and I even learned some facts. "Plants Seeds" is about a 15 minute read-aloud. I say stick with the earlier books.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-04-04

I enjoyed this book very much because it is such a fun way to learn about science. This is the first of many Magic School Bus books I purchased, and I've been hooked ever since.

Book Description

This volume emphasizes an aspect of children's picture books that has not yet been thoroughly investigated: structure. Both concept books and picture storybooks employ very distinctive structures that, once mastered, can be applied to any picture book you wish to write. When so many of the best picture books employ the same structures, it is important to analyze these structures, understand why they work, and learn how to incorporate them into your own writing. This volume helps you do all that. You will see that no matter how carefully you labor over the tone, word choice, plot, character, setting, theme and style of your picture book, you must have a thorough grasp of its structure if you wish your book to succeed. Indeed, you will find that an expert command of structure is the key to writing a successful children's picture book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-10-07

I have at least a dozen books on writing for children and I especially like this one. Not only does it focus exclusively on picture books, which few others do, it provides solid, concrete information that you can apply directly to your own writing. Too many other books offer vague tips that may be helpful in polishing an existing manuscript, but don't help with building your story from the ground up. I've been trying (sporadically) to sell picture book manuscripts for several years now, and I believe that what I've learned from this book will help get me closer to my goal of being a published author. Volumes II and III are on their way to me now and I can't wait to see what they have to offer!

5 out of 5 stars How to write a Children's Picture Book.......2007-03-22

The book takes popular children's book and breaks apart the beginning, middle and ending so that you get a very clear picture of how your story should progess. An excellent resource.

5 out of 5 stars A Constant Companion.......2007-01-02

Eve Heidi Bine-Stock's HOW TO WRITE A CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK (VOLUMES I, II and III)is a constant companion and rich resource in the planning and revision of picture books. The deconstruction of picture books, and the detailed classification of crucial characteristics - using classic picture books to illustrate each detailed point - make these books invaluable. Although I particularly use Volume I and II in the planning stage of a new manuscript, all three volumes are again by my side during each revision, and each step of each revision. There is no question in my mind that these books are the biggest resource in pushing my writing to the next level. The volumes are not read-once-and-put-aside books; they are books you will want on your writing desk for constant reference.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, Easy-to-use.......2004-11-11

As an author of many books for children, I found this book to be one of the most practical and helpful tools to format a picture book during the writing process. I'm already using the techniques to structure new projects to make my picture book manuscripts shine! I plan on recommending it to my critique group as well as buying copies as gifts for my writer friends.

5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for any aspiring children's picturebook writer.......2004-06-07

How To Write A Children's Picture Book focuses especially upon structure as the key to creating a memorable and entertaining treasure for children to read, share, and learn from. Distinguishing between picturebooks and picture storybooks, and closely examining such enduring children's classics as "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Where The Wild Things Are", How To Write A Children's Picture Book is a highly useful and focused guide that dissects the nuts and bolts of writing with a keen eye toward higher achievement and quality. A "must-have" for any aspiring children's picturebook writer.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Smart book for smart kids.......2007-01-11

Deceptively simple in the beginning, this story builds in complexity and excitement from start to finish. It is an intelligent story made exciting through mathematics. Anno's Magic Seeds is a clever introduction to the concept of investing toward the future. As always, the illustrations are lovely.

1 out of 5 stars A major disappointment.......2002-11-27

Love Mitsumasa Anno's other books, but the wonderful intricate drawings are missing from this book, and the story is easily 60% too long, especially for children.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Math Lesson.......2000-04-16

Anno's books are great for teaching fun math lessons. I readthe book to my sixth graders and had them figure the answers to thequestions as we went. They loved it! They really have to listen carefully, so it makes a great lesson in listening skills as well.

4 out of 5 stars Using Math in the real world.......2000-03-31

Anno's Magic Seeds is yet another book written by Mitsumasa Anno that integrates literature with mathematics. This book is a useful tool for teachers attempting to provide a connection of math in the real world for their students. The story is enchanting and it certainly proved to be a creative way for beginning a math lesson- atleast it was for my 4th graders! I highly recommend this or any of Anno's books to stimulate children's interest in mathematics!

3 out of 5 stars I give it a 3.5.......2000-03-28

Sure, this book is real cute, but it is missing something. It is strange, and my nephew wasn't thrilled by it. I bought it for his because of his obsession with seeds. It is no run of the mill book, but it could do better

Book Description

More than twenty years have passed since Ship left its children, the seed of humanity, on an uninhabited, earthlike planeta planet they named Home. Zoheret and her companions have started settlements and had children of their own. But, as on board Ship, there was conflict, and soon after their arrival, Zoherets old nemesis, Ho, left the original settlement to establish his own settlement far away. When Hos daughter, sixteen-year-old Nuy, spies three strangers headed toward their village, the hostility between the two groups of old shipmates begins anew and threatens to engulf the children of both settlements. Can the divided settlers face the challenges of adapting to their new environment in spite of their conflicts? And if they do, will they lose their humanity in the process?

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating story of survival and struggle evolves.......2007-08-07

This fine sequel of EARTHSEED requires no prior familiarity to prove enthralling for newcomers to Sargent's fantasy world. Over twenty years have passed since Ship left its children on an uninhabited, Earth-like planet named Home, and Zoheret and her companions have had their own children. Two groups of old shipmates make separate encampments and soon hostility breaks out and threatens their fragile new world. A fascinating story of survival and struggle evolves, highly recommended for any teen audience interested in solid characterization and involving science fiction.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic science fiction .......2007-03-11

Ship was created to find worlds that could contain human life and seed these orbs with humans. One of the first worlds to fulfill the requirement is Home where Ship deposited colonists. The colonists make up two groups. One segment led by Ho settles in the warm south while the rest headed by Zoheret moved into the coastal north. The people of the south lost much of their technology and devolved into a more\primitive lifestyle, while the Northerners built domes and relied on the technology brought from earth.

Ho's teenage daughter Nuy sees three strangers approach from the north. She brings them to their village, but Ho assumes they bring death so he kills them and exiles his offspring. A year passes with the second generation Northerners wanting to know what happened to their compatriots. At a town hall meeting Leila a second generation person wants to send a second expedition to the South and she is supported by the settlement so they go south to find out the truth. When they camp for the night, Ho sends his forces to attack them killing two of the campers. Leila insists on continuing and soon meets Nuy, who wants to save both groups from her out of control parent.

Two groups, one primitive and one advanced, battle for control with some in power (on both sides) preferring the status quo. It takes the female adventurers from both sides to demand change and go against the status quo established by the original landing party. Pamela Sargent has written a fantastic science fiction novel that shows how humans adapt to new environs. FARSEED is enjoyable and exciting as readers will care what happens to the colonists especially the heroic offspring.

Once you've met Tish Sterling, you can't let her go. The fourth book in her series is as intriguing as the others, although I was disappointed by the ending, which left her relationship with Ken up in the air. The real shock, of course, comes in book five, which is from the point of view of Tish's niece, Saranne. Overall, I love Johnston's writing, her poignant phrases and insight into family life and struggles common to all kids. Despite the drama (sometimes melodrama), it is a book I read over and over again.

This series starts with The Keeping Days, there are 5 books in this series. I read these books over 20 years ago (when I was 14) and they are still my favorite books. I wish that I could find all of the books in print to give to my two daughters. Intelligent, yet romantic look at a family in 1920's Yonkers. It is a series that you will cherish forever, never want to give away, and read again and again.

      Book Description

Nobel laureate V. S. Naipaul’s magnificent Magic Seeds continues the story of Willie Chandran, the perennially dissatisfied and self-destructively naive protagonist of his bestselling Half a Life.
Having left a wife and a livelihood in Africa, Willie is persuaded to return to his native India to join an underground movement on behalf of its oppressed lower castes. Instead he finds himself in the company of dilettantes and psychopaths, relentlessly hunted by police and spurned by the people he means to liberate. But this is only one stop in a quest for authenticity that takes in all the fanaticism and folly of the postmodern era. Moving with dreamlike swiftness from guerrilla encampment to prison cell, from the squalor of rural India to the glut and moral desolation of 1980s London, Magic Seeds is a novel of oracular power, dazzling in its economy and unblinking in its observations.

"Magic Seeds" is the third book by V.S. Naipaul that I have read. I like his style and his observations on human society. However, I always get the sense that we are seeing the world through the eyes of a non-participant. In "Magic Seeds" we pick up where we left off in "Half a Life" with our impartial observer Willie involved in a variety of activities. They are all part of a search for purpose that seems misguided because he is taking his directions from others. Very seldom does he seem to find his own way in life yet it is his observations as a detached, unemotional observer that makes "Magic Seeds" and "Half a Life" such compelling novels.

I was rather puzzled by the experiences Willie had in India. I admit it was an unusual set of circumstances but that's where Willie's detachment became so frustrating. Why he didn't just walk away maybe says a lot about my naivite but it left me wondering how much I was willing to invest in such an otherwise keen insight. Despite what I said about Willie in India, I like the way Naipaul takes us to places we don't normally get to go. I'll be glad to read more of his books and maybe, somewhere along the way, I'll come across a character who actually cares about his life and surroundings. If not, I'll keep to my theory that Naipaul's greatness is his ability to let us see what life looks like when the world treats you as unimportant. For someone with an Asian heritage raised in the Carribean and educated in England, I DO understand that Naipaul knows of what he rights about.

      4 out of 5 stars A sequel to Half A Life.......2006-10-27

Willie Chandran is now living with his sister Sarojini in Berlin. He left Africa and his wife after 18 years but he was too weak to look for a cause and didn't fight in the great guerrilla there. That's why he now decides to return to India after more than 20 years but he has changed a lot so that seeing his home country again proves to be quite a disappointment.
Willie then joins several groups of rebels who fight for the lower castes but again he is disappointed since these rebels turn out to be dilettantes and psychopaths who are despised even by the people they intend to liberate.
He is subsequently arrested and with the help of an old English friend he manages to reach London where he has to deal with the moral desolation of the 1980s.
Willie's fate in India is a sad one: a man undone by the India of his return. He returns there with the idea of action but can see no pattern, no thread and so becomes a floater because the world around him has become a kind of phantasmagoria.

5 out of 5 stars The second half of a great novel.......2006-08-30

The title of "Half a Life" had a second meaning that became clear only after "Magic Seeds" was published. The latter isn't a sequel - it's the second half of the former.

There are many wonderful things about the combination novel, beginning with the almost magically concise style Naipaul has mastered, or more properly has invented. There are ironies within ironies, as in the comic parallels between the personal and sexual disappointments that drive Indian guerillas into the woods and drive the character of Roger into a Tom Wolfe style of conservative cultural politics. Both attempts to channel sexual frustration into politics are equally ineffectual to change the world, or even to avert personal calamity. Neither is ultimately much more than an expression of bitterness toward a world that refuses to conform to the individual's idealized vision of it - for the magic seeds that refused to sprout.

Throughout there are references to the way in which people pick up ideas of what they should be or say, and then try to act up to those ideas, or ideals - references that evidently go right over the heads of critics who insist on seeing the things the characters do and say as reflections of Naipaul, when they're not even true reflections of the characters themselves.

There is great pleasure in reading these extraordinarily well-written books, and a still-deeper pleasure in thinking them through after you finish. They're masterpieces that people will be reading with admiration and even awe a hundred years from now.

5 out of 5 stars enjoyable and profound.......2006-06-30

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The story was thoroughly engaging. I found the message to be profound. Much of what we do, our causes our affiliations are all to satisfy our vanity. The theatre is more important than the cause. Willie realizes this after involving himself in a radical guerilla group that was trying to free the oppressed poor peasants. We discover that the guerillas were really just into it for themselves, the feeling of grandure, the vanity.

This group like so many like it just became another way of life and were barely tolerated by the deserving poor.

      Great read!

4 out of 5 stars Look before You Leap!.......2005-04-29

Magic Seeds is the sequel to V.S. Naipaul's powerful novel, Half a Life. If you have not yet read that book, I strongly urge you to do so before you read this one. Otherwise, you will feel like Scotty beamed you up into a seat of an airplane on its way somewhere without any warning.

In Half a Life, Willie Chandran left his native India to pursue his education in England and found himself to be miserable there. With a little notoriety from his writing, he attracts the attention of a wealthy wife and moves to Africa where he lives an indolent life. In that book, Willie is established as someone too passive to seize on his own desires . . . and leads a shadow-like existence that doesn't please him.

In Magic Seeds, Willie has left Africa and finds himself as a temporary visitor in Berlin with his radicalized sister who wants him to return to India as a guerrilla fighter. While there, he realizes that revolutionary warfare is often more about the power lust of the revolutionaries than any potential benefit to those who they are supposed to be liberating. The resulting story is a scathing indictment of leftist revolutionary movements. After many years in the field, Willie turns himself in and is imprisoned. There, he finds that escaping the revolutionaries is almost as hard as ever . . . and his life still suffers from being too passive in the face of the resolve of others.

Unexpectedly released from prison, Willie returns to England and encounters the modern "civilized" world and finds it wanting as well. But Willie has started to grow up at last and begins to seize on initiative to get what he wants . . . and to learn from those who have been too greedy at following their impulses and ideologies. He even begins to see that there are times when being passive can be rewarding, and he begins to use passivity as a strategy to gain his ends. You also find out what happened to many of the characters who influence Willie in Half a Life.

The book's main weakness is that Mr. Naipaul is obsessed with the idea that people shouldn't be so easily swayed by others into making life-changing decisions based on limited information and spurious logic. They are looking for magic seeds that will lead them up Jack's beanstalk to slay a giant and gather up a hen that lays golden eggs. That's a silly search. There are no magic seeds. That theme is repeated and developed from every possible angle. The message overweighs the story so that this becomes more like a philosophical novel rather than a story-telling novel.
