Book Description

There is Always a Price to Pay

So Darius warned her when she accepted a position with his traveling troupe. And gazing mesmerized at the merciless slash of his mouth, the implacable resolve on his face, the soulless emptiness of his black eyes, Tempest was afraid to ask what it was.

She had always been different, apart from others. From the moment his arms closed around her, enveloping her in a sorcerer's spell, Darius seemed to understand her unique gifts. But did his kiss offer the love and belonging she sought, or a danger more potent than his own panthers?

Somewhere deep inside herself, Tempest realized she knew the answer. She had no choice but to accept the velvet stroke of his tongue, submit to the white-hot heat piercing her skin, welcome an erotic pleasure like no other...

5 out of 5 stars Book #6.......2007-08-14

This is book 2 of the troupadoors set.

Tempest and Darius' story.

Darius is the band leader. As the oldest and the one that took care of the others hundreds of years ago when they were fleeing he is more of a father figure/older brother.

He meets Tempest who is hired to help the band--mainly work on the auto's. LOL

Don't want to give the story away, but this one is worth reading. Tempest has a way with animals and the group has a few large cats in their "group." LOL

There's a sub story building in this one that leads to the next. FYI

5 out of 5 stars hot read.......2007-08-05

I read this a few years back, and it was my first out of this series!! This is by far the hottest I have read by Christine Feehan!! If this helps this is the only one that I have kept as a keeper!! I have read most of the series except the most recent ones which have come out in the last couple of years!!

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT.......2007-06-13

this serie of book is grat, sexy, hot and very entretaining

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-05-21

I finished this book and Im on amazon for more. Mrs Feehan's talent of writing makes me crave to read more. I have been a closet romance novel reader, thinking it was emotional trash. She gracefully entices the readers imagination with enough censorship to tease the reader and hunger for more. I actually found myself in her world, wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Fire.......2007-05-10

Another great story by Christine Feehand. I love the "Dark" series and have read all of them, several times!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Angel Fire East marks the close of Terry Brooks's Nest Freemark-John Ross saga, which began with 1997's Running with the Demon. After a long layover in Seattle for the middle book, Knight of the Word, the fantasy-meets-modernity action returns to Nest's native Hopewell, where once again Nest and John must face off against the Void, this time in the form of ancient demon Findo Gask, who favors a black-clad evil preacher getup for his menacing needs.

Brooks's well-realized and likable cast from the previous books is back, from Nest (now 29) to Ross (haggard as ever) to Pick (still just a few inches tall) and even grown-up versions of Nest's childhood friends from Running, including Bennett, now a junkie with child. Of course, Findo Gask has assembled a creepy little Legion of Doom to harry these nice folks: a giant albino demon; a formless, flesh-eating ur'droch; and a knife-wielding Orphan-Annie-gone-bad named Penny Dreadful. And Angel Fire's main plot thread is even compelling: John Ross has caught a shape-changing, wild-magic creature of enormous power, a gypsy morph, that he and Nest must discover how to turn to the Word before Gask and his crew can capture it for the Void.

But as with Knight of the Word, wooden pacing and unconvincing transitions keep this tale from rising to the level of Brooks's previous masterworks, such as the excellent Shannara and Landover series. If you've read the first two books, it's certainly worth seeing off your old friends in Angel Fire East. But if you're--heaven forbid--new to Terry Brooks, check out his earlier work, or even his very capable novelization of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. --Paul Hughes

Book Description

When Running with the Demon appeared two years ago, it was recognized at once as a masterpiece in the making, a bold departure that promised to revitalize contemporary urban fantasy and showcase Terry Brooks's vast storytelling gifts as never before. The second book of the series, A Knight of the Word, raised expectations even higher. Now, in Angel Fire East, sure to be hailed as his most ambitious, most accomplished work yet, Terry Brooks brings his bestselling epic trilogy of good and evil to an unforgettable close.

As a Knight of the Word, John Ross has struggled against the tireless dark forces of the Void for twenty-five years. A rootless wanderer scarred as deeply by the magic he wields as by the unspeakable horrors he has witnessed in its service, Ross is driven by dreams that show the world reduced to blood and ashes by the Void and its minions. The grim futures he dreams each night will come true unless he can stop them now, in the present. But for all his power, John Ross is only one man, while the demons he hunts--and which hunt him in turn--are legion.

Then Ross learns of the birth of a gypsy morph, a rare and dangerous creature formed of wild magics spontaneously knit together. If he can discover its secret, the morph could be an invaluable weapon against the Void. But the Void, too, knows the value of the morph, and will not rest until the creature has been corrupted--or destroyed.

Desperate, Ross returns to the town of Hopewell, Illinois, home of Nest Freemark, a young woman with magical abilities of her own. Twice before, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance, the lives of Ross and Nest have intersected. Together, they have prevailed.

But now they face an ancient evil beyond anything they have ever encountered, for a demon of ruthless intelligence and feral cunning awaits them in Hopewell. As a firestorm of good and evil erupts, threatening to consume lives and shatter dreams, Ross and Nest have but a single chance to solve the mystery of the gypsy morph--and of their own profound connection.

Yet more time has passed. Nest is back in Hopewell, having been an Olympic athlete, and John Ross grows ever more tired. They must end up working to stop a demonic preacher, and a dangerous magical source from doing bad things to small town Hopewell and the rest of the world.

Both John and Nest must struggle with the problems their own powers causes, as well as working out how to fight their opponents.

5 out of 5 stars Best Terry Brook's Trilogy........2007-06-09

I disagree with the Editorial Reviews. In my opinion this is the best Terry Brook's trilogy. I own and have read all of the Shannara books, and
this trilogy is superior. For me, all of the books in the trilogy were true "page-turners". I found it very difficult to put them down. I love to read just before bed, and many a night I would promise myself I could read only one chapter and then find an hour later I was still reading. I really cared for the characters - wishing I could spend time with them. The mood, the suspense, the settings - everything was perfect.

3 out of 5 stars Characters a Bit Slow.......2007-06-03

Nest has magic in her. She's come to terms with that over her lifetime and now, in her late twenties, accepts it. She also accepts the fact that she is destined to lead a quiet life in the small town where her family has always lived. She will act as guardian over the nearby forest and try to keep her magic in check. This winter will be just one of many boring seasons by herself.

Then a nasty demon shows up at her door, asking about a man Nest knew years and years ago, a Knight of the Word named John Ross. The demon seems to think that John is headed for Nest's house, and he warns her that if she tries to help him or hide him, very bad things will happen.

Soon Nest's house is filled not only with John Ross and a strange magical and powerful creature called a gypsy morph in the form of a small boy, but also an old friend who has come upon hard times and her little girl.

The demon and his footsoldiers are all around them, though, making trouble and putting everyone in danger. Nest can't throw John and the boy out--if they can get the boy to communicate with them, they will have a powerful weapon in the ongoig fight against the demons of the Void. But time is running out for all of them.

I liked that even though this book was the third in a series, I felt like I could pretty well pick up on what was going on without having read the two previous books. I also liked that although this book was science fiction, it took place in a pretty normal town where nobody knew that magic existed.

The characters were really clueless. Nest should have had some idea of what was going on with Larry, and Gask should have been able to figure out what form the gypsy morph had taken. Everyone was a bit too slow to figure things out.

5 out of 5 stars Once again we are in GOOD hands with this last installment of the Word/Void.......2007-05-01

It took me quite a long time to even get the courage to purchase Running With The Demon. I believe it had been out in paperback at least a year before I got around to it. I was a fan of Shannara--and that was ALL. I had already ignored his Landover series from day one (and still haven't read them--although one day I will) but this one seemed different. The idea of a contemporary fantasy story set in the REAL world was fascinating and the loosely based similarities to the Harry Potter series is about as far off the mark as comparing the Lord of the Rings to Star Wars.

I am quite impressed overall with the entire series, and with Angel Fire East in particular. The character of Findo Gask is at once one of Brooks' more demonic creations, but in a totally different manner than anthing set before. Sure he has given us some truly horrible creatures over the years, but Findo is much more evolved than the others...and consequently is much more intelligent and cunning, and therefore almost real in how he can make your skin crawl. I loved the pacing of the story and how it all unfolded so meticulously. It almost seems as though each and every person introduced is treated as though they were the main focus of the story, and that secondary characters simply did not exist.

I have also noticed that no matter how much I enjoyed or hated a novel, there are ALWAYS those who feel as opposite from the way I do as is possible, and therefore discount my opinion of the book I reviewed. I never feel the need to preach about how if I liked any particular book that the world HAS to like it as well...and so I won't here as well. What I WOULD like to say is this: chances are if you liked Running With The Demon and A Knight Of The Word, you will more than enjoy Angel Fire East. Personally I felt it was one of the more satisfying stories Terry Brooks has ever written. He is right now in the middle of bridging the storylines of the Word and Void to Shannara with Armageddon's Children and the upcoming Elves of Cintra. Once again, I cannot WAIT to buy and read them as well...and who knows, while waiting for the last book, I may finally pick up that first Landover book that came out so long ago and give it a go...

Book Description

From the acclaimed author of Dissolution comes a new sixteenth-century thriller featuring hunchback lawyer Matthew Shardlake. In 1540, during the reign of Henry VIII, Shardlake is asked to help a young girl accused of murder. She refuses to speak in her defense even when threatened with torture. But just when the case seems lost, Thomas Cromwell, the king's feared vicar general, offers Shardlake two more weeks to prove his client's innocence. In exchange, Shardlake must find a lost cache of “Dark Fire,” a legendary weapon of mass destruction. What ensues is a page-turning adventure, filled with period detail and history.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as DISSOLUTION, but better than many in this genre ..........2007-08-04

Sansom made a strong start out of the gate with DISSOLUTION. So, perhaps I had inflated expectations for the second book. But while it doesn't live up to DISSOLUTION, it is a better historical mystery than many I have read.

The author goes into great detail about the times, which I like. But the main mystery - in this case, there were two - seemed contrived. As he explains at the end of the book, no one knows what prompted Cromwell's sudden removal from office.

Certainly, he had lost credibility with Henry VIII over his position on the Cleves marriage. But why so public and dramatic a removal, no one knows. The "mystery" fills in the blanks, and unfortunately, it's too contrived.

I think the strengths of the book are in the historical setting and the feel the reader gets for the society and politics of the times. If you like Bruce Alexander, you will probably like this book.

4 out of 5 stars Charming Whodunit.......2007-08-02

This is the second of author Sansom's historical mysteries, both set in Tudor England at the time of the Reformation, and this one equals or surpasses the first, Dissolution. Sansom has created an engaging sleuth, attorney Matthew Shardlake, who has a brilliant intellect in a crippled body. I am delighted to get to know Shardlake, as he is one of the more engaging personalities I have encountered in the many works of historical fiction I have read. In this episode, Shardlake and his new sidekick are commissioned by the redoubtable Thomas Cromwell to recover a stash of the old time weapon of mass destruction "Greek Fire" and its ancient formula which are in the hands of viscious unknown enemies. At the same time, Shardlake is retained by a despairing uncle to defend his niece who has been charged with murder and is incarcerated in Newgate Prison, refusing to speak in her own defense.

The plot unfolds as our indefatigable hero to's and fro's across London in his efforts to uncover the Greek Fire plotters while simultaneously working to discover the identity of the true murderer and exonerate the wrongly accused niece. This is pretty standard stuff. I appreciate, however, that Sansom is careful to wrap up all loose ends, does not drop red herrings that are never woven into the story, and bothers to give the reader closure as to the ultimate fates of all the players. Not all mystery writers are this scrupulous of their readers' concerns.

The best part of this novel, however, is Shardlake himself. The author clearly has much affection for his creation and our hardworking hunchback is a fellow I would like to meet. He is a man of conscience and integrity at a time when most men were scrambling to protect themselves and their interests in the chaos of political and religious upheaval. We are allowed into Shardlake's own private conflicts about faith, morality and the law - - not in a dry, but in a very human, way. I found Shardlake's shy courtship of Lady Honor to be endearing, as his self-consciousness and uncertainty are a welcome relief from the swaggering bravado of too many fictional "heros." I look forward to reading the next installment and spending more time with our mild-mannered detective.

This is not exactly Tolstoy, but is a very entertaining and well-written read. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sansom does it again!.......2007-04-26

After the stunning debut of DISSOLUTION, Sansom continues his saga of Tudor politics and intrigue. Wonderful plotting. Meticulously drawn characters. More of the deliciously vivid description that draws you in and keeps you reading.

Matthew Shardlake is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating fictional characters in ages.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat contrived and slow off the mark, but . . . .......2006-09-25

This historical mystery places a hunchbacked lawyer, Matthew Shardlake, in the time of King Henry VIII's London as reformist Protestantism contests for religious supremacy with the Roman Catholic Church in the wake of King Henry's break with the papacy over marital matters. Shardlake, formerly a minion of the Earl of Essex, Thomas Cromwell, is engaged in a number of mundane legal matters when he is recruited to help an eighteen year old girl condemned to death for killing her younger cousin, the lad Ralph, heir to the Wentworth clan's fortune, a self-made family keen on moving up the social ladder. With barely time to save the girl he is inducted back into Thomas Cromwell's orbit to help sort out still another mystery: who controls a potentially world shaking state secret, the rediscovered formula and mechanism for the long lost Byzantine 'super weapon,' Greek Fire?

The story is marred by a certain heavy handedness in the use of detail in the descriptions as the author endeavours to recreate the lost world of London of that era in all its gross unpleasantries. He seemingly leaves no stone unturned and no opportunity overlooked to call to our attention the vileness of the era, though it's reasonable to suppose that the narrator would not have been so attuned to such things since it was the world he knew, after all. Matthew Shardlake who tells this tale is also somewhat tiresome, particularly in how he refers to his horse, almost as though it were another character in the story, and in his endless complaints about the back pain he must endure. He is also a bit too naive, it seems to me, in dealing with the London underworld, but this is a not uncommon occurrence among certain protagonists of mysteries these days. There's also a certain artificiality about the plot and how it's constructed which grates and much about the tale that is predictable. Sometimes our intrepid heroes (Shardlake has the benefits of one of Cromwell's personal minions as well) seem to waste an awful lot of time going back and forth to do the same things more than once, making their efforts seem all the more bizarre as an investigation since this obviously puts them in the position of alerting those they are investigating way more than they should.

And yet, after I had pushed my way through the first half, I must admit to having become curious enough about matters to see how Sansom solves the mystery of the missing Greek Fire as well as how our hero clears the name and saves the life of poor Elizabeth Wentworth, locked away in the hideous "Hole" beneath London's most notorious prison, chained and condemned to lie in her own filth for twelve days as Shardlake scurries about day after day in the mean London streets, chasing chimeras, juggling cases and fighting for his life against thugs, hooligans and the rascals of the nobility. Will Cromwell triumph? Will Greek Fire be rediscovered? Will Henry VIII take a new wife? The story actually started to work for me though it was certainly marred earlier on. I ended up reading it through and glad enough to learn about the awful culture and civilization out of which our own eventually arose.

Book Description

Elise Nicholson isn't your ordinary witch. For one thing, she can light candles with a look, and plays a mean guitar. Unfortunately, being able to call fire out of the air isn't the most useful skill around. To top it off, she's a Guardian of the City, and the other Guardians-her two best friends-have no time for her. They're too busy with their Watchers, the grim black-coated warriors sworn to protect Elise and her friends from the Dark. Lonely and terrified because she isn't certain she can control her intensified "gifts," Elise is fast running out of options and patience. Then the Trifero lands in her lap, and everything just gets worse. Remy is known as the Hunter, snatching Talismans away from the Dark and struggling with the constant agony of being a Watcher. Then he get assigned to stand guard over a smart mouth fire witch who not only hates Watchers but has just found the Trifero, a Talisman capable of blowing the city sky-high. If the Dark catch Elise, she'll be broken, turned into a magickal weapon and sold to the highest bidder. Not only does Remy have to get to her first and keep the Dark away from her, but he also must convince Elise that he means her no harm-and that's the easy part of the job. If he pulls this one off, he just might redeem himself the way every Watcher aches to do. But if he fails, both he and Elise might be better off dead. . .

3 out of 5 stars series fires up too late [no spoilers].......2007-09-04

"The Watcher Series" continues three months later in "Fire Watcher" with Elise and new Watcher Remy, whose growls rattle windows and walls often, as the focal characters. The usual desire to touch and taste the other while staring and thinking "I don't deserve him/her" pervades the novel. It is obvious the series will not contain deep character growth but spontaneous action towards undeveloped and vague antagonists.

Remy the Hunter faces off against the Brotherhood, a Dark organization dedicated to business and profit, in an attempt to prevent them from capturing fire witch Elise and a Talisman called the Trifero. What compels the Brotherhood's intentions is not revealed. Long overdue fight scenes transpire with wild magick and sufficient melee action.

The series is pro-pagan; therefore those of a highly inflexible religious background or intolerant attitude towards religion might want to avoid the selection.

Thank you.

Third in Saintcrow's "Watcher" series, we get the story of Elise, the fire witch. Elise, to date, has been without a Watcher, and she doesn't understand her friends' relationships with their watchers. She is suspicious of anyone who tries to get close to her friends, and she really does not want to trust the Watchers, despite seeing them in action, protecting the witches from the evil that is encroaching the city of which they have become Guardians. Elise has a temper, which she lets get the better of her, many times, and she doesn't use her common sense when she is trying to protect her friends, despite the trials from her friends' experiences. Remy, her Watcher, is a Cajun, and his easy-going temperment is the perfect foil to Elise's jump first attitude. When Elise comes into possession of the "trifero" which multiplies her power infinitely, things heat up in the city of the Guardians, and Remy has his hands full. I liked the first two stories better - it seemed to me that Elise didn't learn squat from the first two and ended up hurting her friends more because of it.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Fantasy Romance.......2006-06-20

In this third installment of her "Guardian Witches" series Lilith Saintcrow brings us the story of the Fire Witch, Elise, and her Watcher, Remy. This series just gets better and better as we learn more about the Dark and the Brotherhood.

Elise has always had a firey temper, to go with the fire power she has as a fire witch. She has also been very cautious of the Watchers. Now a Watcher has arrived unexpectedly, and this time it is her Watcher. Although attracted to Remy she is still not sure of his loyalties. Elise was brought up the hard way and finds trusting a hard thing to do. Theo and Mari are the only family she has since Suzanne's death. Elise finds it hard to admit she is jealous of the time and attention Mari and Theo give to their Watchers. Maybe having her own Watcher will help her to understand.

Remy is a Cajun, he has been to the jaws of hell and was saved by Circle Lightfall, when they made him a Watcher. He has never really watched a witch, as long as he has been a Watcher, he has searched for and found many powerful items and icons for the Circle. He is known as the "Hunter", now he has a witch to look out for and as fate would have it , she is his witch. The witch who takes away his pain and replaces it with pleasure. But how can he earn her trust, when he believes himself to be unloveable and unworthy.

This time the Brotherhood is determined to possess Elise, especially since she has come into possession of the TRIFERO. A mystical ornament that will magnify her powers. Fire witches are very rare. When they cannot reach Elise herself they kidnap her band, and now only heaven knows what they must face to save them. Against all advice Elise goes her own way, and Remy must find a way to not only save her from the Dark but from herself as well. I loved it.

Good pacing and dialogue between characters. They fell in love a bit too quick in Part I, but overall, it was an entertaining read.

2 out of 5 stars Fine, if masturbating heros don't turn you off.......2006-04-14

As usual, Joyce writes a book full of tension and intrigue. I enjoyed up until the part where Nick is fantasizing about Jane and humps his matress until he spunks all over the bed. EWWWWWW! I don't find masturbating heros sexy. I enjoyed Joyce's BEYOND SCANDAL, but so many of her books have been turning me off that I'm beginning to think that it was just a fluke that I found one I liked.

If you can get past this grossness, then you'll probably enjoy this. Otherwise, you won't.

5 out of 5 stars Heart ache.......2005-07-01

My heart ached for him. He just needs to be loved but, of course, thinks he is worthy of love. She wants to love him but misunderstands why he won't let her. Misunderstandings abound. Oh but the sexual tension ...

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC A MUST READ.......2003-04-19

A fantastic book. I loved Nick and Jane's story it was very passionate and dramatic. I couldn't put this book down. I found myself reading it at any spare moment that I got. It is a fantastic edition to your other Brenda Joyce collection.

4 out of 5 stars Dark Fire by Elizabeth Lowell.......2006-04-21

This is a follow-up to Lowell's book "Fever" and
features some of the same characters as the previous
novel. Recommend that you read "Fever" first, but
both are excellent as stand alone novels as well.

Description from the book back cover:

The Andean Cloud Forest, Ecuador. Mysterious, hauntingly beautiful -- a land like nowhere else on earth. But a dangerous land, despite its beauty. A land to be feared. And respected ... Like Trace Rawlings -- a man who lives by his own rules. Ruthless, domineering, he takes what he wants. But Cynthia Ryan is used to someone trying to manipulate her, especially her powerful father. Surely she can handle this man. After all, he's just there to guide her through the treacherous forest. Thrown together by her father's ruthless ambition, first as adversaries, then as lovers, Trace and Cynthia force their way through the cloud forest -- transformed by a passion as wild and steamy as the forest itself.

If you ever read Elizabeth Lowell you will know how stimulating her story line and characters can be. I try to buy any book published by her. Just pick any one of her novels and you will end up buying them all. Very Romantic and fun reading.

2 out of 5 stars Oh, the great purpleness..........2002-09-02

A book of a place where the men are men and the women are ideots... Though, to be fair, the supporting characters did not strike me as helpless twits. The part that really killed this book, however, is the purple prose in the sex and romance scenes. It is difficult to write a sex scene that carries no erotic charge whatsoever, but Ms. Lowell managed somehow.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-04-14

I enjoyed reading this book.. It has romance, suspence and a lot of fire. Never used to read Romance books, til I started with Elizabeth Lowell. I think she is totally awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2000-07-26

This is the first book that i read by Elizabeth Lowell and i am hooked! I really felt like i was there with the characters in the story. It did seem to end too quickly, but all great love stories do. I have since read the book Fever with Cindy's brother Rye McCall, it was captivating.

Book Description

At night, a girl hears the sirens from the fire station near her house. Even though it is dark outside, she knows where they are going: to a castle, to a garden, all the way to Pluto . . . Dashka Slater and Nicoletta Ceccoli have crafted a dreamy ode to firefighters everywhere and the big, brave, spectacular feats they accomplish every day, and every night-all the world over.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars We are on the thousandth read of this book..........2007-03-04

...and you would think that I'd be bored from reading it over and over, but somehow I am not.

This book isn't really about firefighters, it's about a young girl's imagination and what she imagines the firefighters do. She hears the fire engine's siren outside her window at night, and she spins these tales that are imbued with a dreamlike quality, almost as if she is drifting off to sleep. They douse a fire at a medieval castle inadvertently ignited by a dragon; he has stopped in for dinner and blown on his potatoes to cool them with his fire breath. They head to a fire all the way in Mexico that started when a woman eats a chili pepper in her garden that is so hot, embers shoot out from her mouth. The ladder crew retrieves a young boy who has bounced so high on his bed that he launched himself all the way to Pluto. He must return home because he doesn't have the right gear on, that is, a spacesuit and mittens. Of course, because it falls to the girl's imagination to name them, they don't have names like Joe and Dave. They have the names Penelope, Almondine, King and, the one conventional name, Bruce.

Imagine several four or five-year olds explaining to you their most fanciful ideas of what firefighters do and this is a composite of those stories. Every detail about the firefighters envisioned by the narrator is so completely true to a young child's imagination, thought-process and rationale, right down to the naming of the firefighters and the non sequitur enumerating of what foods they like to eat. Only a kid would include a list of foods each firefighter enjoys. It's actually quite hilarious. My two-year old daughter most enjoys doing her impression of the father of the boy who bounced to Pluto with her gruff grown-up voice yelling "Come down here right now, it's time for bed." Only a ridiculous grown-up would say something so deflating and practical at a time like that.

The dreamy quality of the illustrations perfectly compliments the text. Nicoletta Ceccoli always renders the most elegant images, here as in Little Red Riding Hood and Island in the Sun.

5 out of 5 stars A firefighter book for girls!.......2007-01-11

My three year old daughter is fascinated by firefighters and fire trucks but almost all of the toddler books we've seen on that topic are aimed at young boys and this book is a great alternative. It tells the story of a young girl who lives near a fire station and what she imagines/dreams the firefighters are doing when she hears their sirens at night (putting out one fire in a castle that was started by a dragon and another that was caused by a woman in mexico eating hot chili peppers) as well as silly things about the firefighters themselves. A great book with a wonderful dreamlike quality and fantastic illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Not your typical firefighters book.......2006-12-24

This is a blessed relief from the run of the mill firefighters book. The text is magical, whimsical and dreamy, and the illustrations are just as outstanding. It reads like the dream of a particularly imaginative kid, which makes it fun to read as a parent. You most definately will not groan when your tot wants you to read it again. And again. And again. You know what I mean. If your kid likes firefighters, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect combination of spooky and sexy.......2006-03-30

I really enjoyed Dark Fire. This book does an excellent job of setting up the series without getting bogged down in exposition.

The concept of a "haunted town" where everybody is so laid back about it is really cool too. It's just there, part of the scenery, and doesn't really draw attention to itself. Very nicely done, and creates a spooky backdrop to this perfect story.

Erin came across as a tough heroine. She could hold her own, didn't believe in ghosts, and really didn't want to accept Lachlan's help. Yet, at the same time Lachlan seemed determined to protect Erin, even though he knows she doesn't want his help. Lachlan was sexy from the first time we saw him, and I completely understand why Erin couldn't keep her hands off him -- I wouldn't be able too either. :) The supporting cast seemed very real, and this world feels very fleshed out, which is something I look for in my paranormal reading. Does this world feel as if it begins and ends with the two covers, or does it feel as if these people are still walking around, loving, and living, even after I close the book. The town, the characters, all of it feels vividly real. It's like a place I wish I could visit on vacation. As if it's there, on the map somewhere.

An excellent read. I read it pretty much all in one sitting -- it was just TOO GOOD TO PUT DOWN!
:)

3 out of 5 stars 3 stars is being generous. Pine Forest was a wonderful setting........2006-03-19

A small town where the unexplained is the norm. The male lead (Lachlan)was fine, and most of the secondary characters, but the "heroine" Erin was one of the most annoying creatures I've encountered in a long time. The book is 334 pages and Erin is still whining about "Can I trust him, can I trust him" blowing hot and then cold towards Lachlan through the first 200 plus pages in the book. We are told that Erin is a strong woman and has recently left home (at the age of about 29 as I understood it) where her parents have been very domineering and controlling. Her immaturity and angst could be understood if she were a teenager, but wasn't particularily attractive in a woman pushing 30. Also as a librarian (again I am assuming that she has a degree in library science.)she should be an expert at researching and gathering information, but apparently this never crossed her mind when strange things began happening to her and in the community. There was also a scene where the local cop (Danny) mentions a possible rape and the sexual habits of previous victims. Have you ever heard of confidentiality! There is a protocol and chain of evidence that must be maintained in cases of suspected rape. Medical and law enforcement professionals are aware of this, even in small towns. This series has potential but definitely needs some work.

4 out of 5 stars FIRE, molten heat!.......2003-12-27

In Pine Forest, the residents believe the tales of ghosts that run amuck, all except Erin Greenway. This new librarian doesn't believe in the ghosts or the tales that the native's of Pine Forest believe.

Erin has been in Pine Forest for four weeks, settling in and adjusting to her new life and job. The last thing on her mind really, is a man. Especially when a woman is attacked in the park, Erin is wary of strangers. But when Lachlan Tavish shows up on her doorstep, fangs bared, all of the common sense that she possesses goes flying out the window and her libido takes over. Even though Erin is immensely attracted to Lachlan, she senses secrets beneath the surface with Lachlan that she doesn't completely trust him. Lachlan claims to be tracking down an ancient vampire, but Erin can't help but wonder what prey Lachlan is really seeking...this vampire or her!

What evil is lurking in Pine Forest? Who is Lachlan Tavish? Will Erin realize that danger is on her doorstep, in more ways than one, before it is too late?

Sensual, riveting, exciting and explosive is Denise A. Agnew's first book in the Deep is the Night Series, DARK FIRE. Erin and Lachlan are profound characters who draw readers deep into the story, make us crave their lust and sensuality and we hate to see their story end. A combustible couple who arouse our senses and each others, who are perfect for each other. DARK FIRE literally sent chills down my spine when reading it. The creaks and moans, the movements of the mansion where Erin works in, had me jumping, looking over my shoulder and straining to hear every sound. This is the first story I have read by Denise A. Agnew and after reading it, I have already added her to my auto-buy list. The prologue itself, draws readers in before it is even over. The words are hypnotic and seductive, luring the reader to keep reading.

DARK FIRE is wonderfully written, suspenseful, highly arousing and intriguing. The Deep is the Night Series is off to a fantastic beginning with DARK FIRE. I can't wait for the next tale in this series, to find out what else this talented author has in store for us next.

Reviewed by Tracey West for The Road to Romance

5 out of 5 stars strong erotic vampire romance.......2003-11-10

Needing freedom from the overwhelming expectations of her parents, Erin Greenway moves from Arizona to Pine Forest, Colorado, to become a librarian in the small town described to her by her best friend, who insists most locals believe in ghosts. Since it is Halloween, Erin and another librarian decorate the library for a children's spooky story hour. As she arrives at the library, Erin hears eerie noises and smells a nasty odor. She is thinking of yesterday's assault on a woman when the voices enter her mind. One sounds threatening while the other seems protectively sexy.

Visiting Scot Lachlan Tavish is in town hunting the Ancient Vampire, who killed his parents and left him for dead. Lachlan believes that the vampire has staked out Erin and he plans to keep her safe though she distrusts his motives. Still, neither can resist the passion between them and soon make love. However, the malevolent blood sucker is coming for both of them and love is not a good emotion to have when one needs logic, and rational thought, items that have abandoned Erin and Lachlan.

Fans of erotic vampire romances will gain great pleasure from Denise Agnew's fantastic DEEP IN THE NIGHT: DARK FIRE. The story line is action-packed as readers anticipate a powerful final confrontation, but also is filled with an ardent romance so that the audience receives additional pleasure from the cleverly designed plot pulling in two directions. Erin and Lachlan are a delightful couple regardless of which vernacular they use and the villain is as vile a foe as one can imagine. Halloween is rarely as good as this tale is.

1 out of 5 stars Shameless cash-in.......2005-02-03

Fans of "Sweet Savage Love" hoping for a passionate continuation of Steve and Ginny's romance will be horribly disappointed. They spend most of the novel apart...and in bed with other people. Hard to get interested in a couple that isn't even together for most of the book. Re-read "Sweet Savage Love" and don't bother with this

3 out of 5 stars It's almost as good as "Sweet Savage Love".......2003-12-19

Probably I would give it 3.75 stars; the first half of the book is excellent, but the part where Steve gets amnesia was a bit overdone...Nothing beats the first book and it really didn't NEED a sequel, but this is pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Not A Lighthearted Read, But Still A Good Read.......2001-03-24

I've come to take the Steve and Ginny saga as less of a romance and more of a historical adventure/misadventure. The "dark" in Dark Fires is most appropriate. What I really appreciated in this novel, apart from some gripping storytelling, was Rogers' treatment of substance abuse in the latter half of the Nineteenth Century. There's nothing pretty about it, and I think it's important to point out that abuse is not just a modern phenomenon. I also admire the way Rogers treats the simple fact that people change and develop as a result of their experiences--and also that one can become stronger through adversity.

2 out of 5 stars What happened????.......1999-06-25

I can't believe that this is the continuation for Steve and Ginny. After reading the first book (which I could not put down) this one was a disappointment and not just this one the third book too lacks many of the sophistication and adventure of the first book. The last book to this series was equal to the first. Too bad for the two middle books.
