In 1985 William Styron fell victim to a crippling and almost suicidal depression, the same illness that took the lives of Randall Jarrell, Primo Levi and Virginia Woolf. That Styron survived his descent into madness is something of a miracle. That he manages to convey its tortuous progression and his eventual recovery with such candor and precision makes Darkness Visible a rare feat of literature, a book that will arouse a shock of recognition even in those readers who have been spared the suffering it describes.

Book Description

A work of great personal courage and a literary tour de force, this bestseller is Styron's true account of his descent into a crippling and almost suicidal depression. Styron is perhaps the first writer to convey the full terror of depression's psychic landscape, as well as the illuminating path to recovery.

5 out of 5 stars Darkness Visible, only by the light of day.......2007-09-27

Having suffered with, what is now called Rapid Cycling BiPolar I since my earliest memories, the depths of darkness and pain that Mr. Styron so eloquently conveys was something I had not found in another until the reading of this book. I have felt it in his novels and in those of many other writers. I have sensed it in film makers not knowing their particular experience. Birds of a feather I suppose. However reading his own very personal internal experience transported me to a place of strange kindred perception. Not having known the man himself, his expression of that void - that place that transcends flesh, ego, personality, separateness - provided a comfort thus far elusive. Being there, one is alone, and one is reminded of how alone we all are, thereby rendering death a place void of fear. The only existing emotion is pain, excruciating yes, avoidable never. He creates a haven for those of us unfortunate, or fortunate, enough to experience this place. From it springs an understanding one cannot vocalize, yet Styron manages to convey it through the rich, textural and intimate development of his characters. It is an understanding that transcends traditional learning and plummets to depths of what it is to be human, to be alive as two people, one within and one without. His ability to remove and don the mask and his inability to do so gave him the most valuable insight one can have into the nature of being, and not being. A brilliant writer; his pain, a gift of understanding, and his gift to us, to write that pain with such an eloquence that it can transport the reader into the souls of the people to whom he penned flesh and blood.

This is a crucial read for not only for we who know this place, but also for those who love us and exist with us side by side. Their pain, though it cannot comprehend our own, is as exquisite and "real" as our own. It is not only we who need to be understood, but also those who love us. Thank you Rose, for standing next to him, with him. Your gifts to him are also gifts to us all. You are as courageous as he.

With much Gratitude and Respect,
Kristina

4 out of 5 stars eerie..........2007-09-18

lot's of big words throughout this book. i haven't read any other of styron's books, so i wasn't aware of his style. it was very readable, however, and i still took away from it a good sense of clarity. that clarity being that depression is as unexplainable and undescribable as i've always felt it is. having been someone who suffered from the illness for a good part of my life, so severely at one point that i made a serious attemtp to end it, this book was pretty eerie. a lot of his
thoughts mimicked my own. some of his were even more intense (or perhaps it was just a result of his high-quality vocabulary), but still it's
always comforting to know there are others who have gone thru a similiar experience, if you can call it that. this isn't really a book you pass along to another for bedtime reading, but if i knew someone who was coming out of the darkness, or who has already succeeded in doing so, i would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice........2007-09-17

I thought I would'nt get anything out of this book because he's so much older than me but I really enjoyed it a lot. I got a different perspective on depression from someone older.

4 out of 5 stars Am I losing my mind?.......2007-07-14

The book describes the symptoms of depression from the viewpoint of one who has experienced it. It does not attempt to explain the 'why' but rather gives the 'what'. If you want to know what someone suffering from depression feels and thinks then this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Described his pain perfectly.......2007-05-06

I did not read this book. I gave it to my son who suffers from depression. He said it described him perfectly, authenticated his feelings, and gave him a clearer understanding of his own condition - plus offered him hope for getting out of the darkness.

Book Description

With his first novel The Blue Edge of Midnight, Jonathon King was praised for his "powerful storytelling" (San Diego Union-Tribune), for his "stunning" and "superb" writing (Pittsburgh Tribune), and for adding "new dimensions to the modern crime novel" (Michael Connelly). And, in a starred review, Publishers Weekly compared King to James Hall, Robert Parker, and James Lee Burke.

Now, in A Visible Darkness, King delivers another gripping, unforgettable story. Max Freeman is seeking refuge from the familiar demons of his former life as a Philadelphia police officer, in his secluded shack deep in the Everglades. But his self-imposed isolation is inter-rupted when he receives a desperate call from his best friend, attorney Billy Manchester. There has been a recent string of suspicious deaths-all elderly women, all from a poor neighborhood, and all with sizable and recently sold-off insurance policies-which the police have been unable, or unwilling, to investigate. Billy believes something sinister may be at work, and so, to help his friend, Max must reluctantly pry where he's not wanted, and act like the cop he's trying to forget he was.

To discover an unseen killer, Max will confront not only the dangers of a forgotten Florida cityscape, but the unexpected and dark corners of his own past as well. Filled with twists, turns, and a breathtaking evocation of a rarely glimpsed underside of modern America, A Visible Darkness confirms Jonathon King's place at the forefront of a new generation of crime novelists.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The second Max Freeman Book.......2007-07-28

This one was good! I just couldn't put it down and ended up finishing it late last night. I like Max Freeman as Jonathon King portrays him. This plot was exciting and fast paced. Max is not a "Super Hero" just a darn good ex-cop! If you get hooked on Jonathon King, try reading his books in sequence. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars King does it again........2006-02-28

There are a couple small weaknesses in this book: you know the killer, which does lessen the suspense, and the protagonist is physically described by seeing himself in a mirror. But I forgive those flaws as King has created a story which builds layer upon layer, showing the motive for the killings and who is behind them. The book is full of interesting characters, including Max and Billy, about whom we learn more in this second book, Det. Sherry Richards, drug dealers and gang members. The story of Max's father's death and the friendship between his and Billy's mother is almost a mystery within the mystery. King's description of Florida, particularly the contrast between being in the city or on the water, is particularly effective. This is starting off as a very good series and I'm pleased to see there are more books waiting for me.

5 out of 5 stars Close Your Eyes and Feel the Heat.......2004-08-23

I've read the first two books of this series and will, without a doubt, purchase the newest. I don't know what else I can say that hasn't already been said better by other reviewers. Jonathan King is to Florida what I feel Michael Connolly and Robert Crais are to L.A. He writes the same beautiful music, just in a different setting.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars actually.......2004-07-15

Very rarely do I give a book 5 star rating...but this one came really close!!! This is the first book that I have read from this author and I plan to read more as newer installments in this series come along...the characters in this book came to life. I felt as though I were watching a movie instead of reading a book!! Excellent, Excellent author with a mind that never stops....

3 out of 5 stars A Strong Follow-Up.......2004-01-07

Jonathon King's novice effort, A Visible Darkness, is another sharp, effective and, unfortunately, short police thriller that should thrill any fans of the genre. King brings back his retired cop, Max Freeman, for another dose of darkness and mayhem. And, although this one is very entertaining, it left me wanting more in the end. Like in the case of King's previous novel, the book is so short and straight to the point that you never really get the chance to fully enjoy it all because you keep on craving for more.

This time, Freeman faces a killer who pries on elderly women, killing them in a way to make their death look natural. As Freeman investigates, he uncovers a plot concerning an insurance company and an insurance investigator who might have one secret too many hidden in his closet. Add to this a very original and disturbing character, a feeble-minded street man, and you should have the formula for one heck of a book. Freeman once again teams up with his good friend and lawyer Billy, and the female cop, Richards, he began seeing after the events of King's first novel.

The plot of A Visible Darkness might be just a bit too simple for its own good. There were not enough subplots to let us really get to know the characters. This is a pretty basic plot that takes you from point A to point B without any added troubles. It's a very, very rare case of 'more is better'.

And yet, I really enjoyed A Visible Darkness. Freeman is a great character, always broody, often cynical. And Richards will hopefully pop up in King's next novel; she is a very mysterious character I can't wait to get to know better.

I get the feeling that Jonathon King is just on the verge of writing one heck of a thriller. If he can let himself explore his characters a bit more and throw more a few more problems their way, all the while capturing the very same levels of suspense and thrills this one presented, his next novel could very well end up being a great one.

5 out of 5 stars Virgil made difficult.......2002-11-14

The most wonderful, insightful book on the Aeneid since Hardie's "Cosmos and Imperium". Johnson confronts the inherent (and much commented upon) melancholy of the poem, and gives us an interpretation as brilliant and as it is original. Classicists from Berkeley always seem a little mad, but Johnson only ever takes the reader as far as it is sensible to go, stopping short of anything too barmy... but just barmy enough to challenge our prejudices and conception of the poet/poem.

4 out of 5 stars Brings out the depth of the Aeneid........2000-11-20

Another terrific book that has gone out of print!

On the surface, Virgil's Aeneid is a fairly unproblematic (and not too interesting) story of the founding of the Roman people by Aeneas after he and his comrades flee the fall of Troy. Johnson really helped me to see that the story is actually much more complex, and much "darker," than it seems.

Book Description

The first book to examine the spiritual and therapeutic practice of retreat in physical darkness to explore inner light

• Shows how experiencing complete darkness over prolonged periods helps in developing mental clarity and creativity

• Draws upon many indigenous and spiritual traditions that use this technique

The use of ceremonial darkness is a classic and cross-cultural method for exploring hidden aspects of unconscious and super-conscious states, accessing invisible landscapes, and embracing the deeper recesses of the self. In Darkness Visible Heaven and Buxton examine the spiritual and therapeutic practice of taking retreat in physical darkness.

For millennia mystics and sages have used darkness as a spiritual tool for breaking with their pasts, prior conditioning, and the limited reality of their societies. Spiritual seekers from many traditions--Celtic, Eastern, indigenous North and South American, Tibetan, and African--have used darkness as a tool for spiritual enlightenment. Heaven and Buxton show how experiencing complete darkness, even for only a period of hours, brings about a remarkable clarity and mental stillness and thus provides a springboard for creativity, intuition, and spiritual development. They include exercises that explore lucid levels of dream consciousness, drawing both from their experience as teachers of this method and from the many cultures that include this practice in their spiritual traditions. Darkness Visible shows how deprivation of sight can truly teach us to see.

Teenagers Shiina and Akira have become fast friends, due in no small part to their bonds with two shape-shifting alien star-creatures. But their small friends are not the only visitors from beyond, nor are Shiina and Akira the only kids connected to them. Roaming the skies are powerful and dangerous Shadow Dragons, and one is linked with a schoolmate of the girls, a malevolent boy with murder in his heart — and a deadly, flying dragon at his command to make it happen!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Further adventures of the distressed heroes and villains.......2007-05-04

Shadow Star's sophomore volume, which takes a much darker and more serious tone than the first book but still not nearly as alarming as those to come, once again captivates readers with its unique plot and characters. These kids are no likely protagonists or antagonists. They have family problems, self-esteem problems, school problems, emotional problems, and, in the case of self-cutter Akira Sakura, even physical problems. Yet here they are, controlling huge aliens known as shadow dragons, two groups of dragon bearers caught in a dangerous war--one group wanting to expand the world, and the other wanting to destroy it and start all over again.

Here, young teen heroines and fast friends Shiina and Akira, who possess young dragons yet are blissfully unaware of the conflict brewing, encounter a member of that latter group for the first time. Shiina remembers his razor-sharp sword dragon from an airborne fight in volume 1, and leaps straight in to destroy it. "Just because you fight with all your heart doesn't mean you can always win," she tells herself after getting mercilessly thrashed by the boy Komori's creature. Once again author and artist Mohiro Kitoh takes us into the depths of the human mind, also touching on modern society's unrepairable damage and complexity. Komori hates brave and perceptive Shiina, but asks shy and insecure Akira to join him in building his new empire. His bloody death by the hands (or fins, if you prefer) of Shiina's dragon Hoshimaru, as well as his own proclamation about others like he, is enough to let readers know that this isn't the last we'll see of evil dragons. Cue a meeting of three slightly older bearers: wise and distant Sudo Naozumi, silly jester Kazuyuki Takano, and haughty private schooler Satomi Ozawa. Not much is revealed about them in this one chapter, but more light is shed on the motives and thoughts of those with such demented ideals.

Mohiro Kitoh's art style and storytelling are both top-notch, with expert pacing and gangly characters who act much tougher than they look. While at this place in the series there are bound to be many questions, the subtle exposition is enough to keep the pages turning for quite a while. As a whole this one is darker than its predecessor, but no worse in its technique, and anyone who has been convinced otherwise would fare well to give it some extra thought.

In 1952, a pseudonymous response to Walton Hannah's anti-Masonic work, Darkness Visible, appeared in England. The author, who called himself "Vindex," was an Episcopal clergyman and a Freemason, who would not be bullied by its detractors. Written with insight, a stinging wit, and sincerity, this work, long out of print is now available again in a corrected, new edition. Vindex succinctly corrects the distorted view of Masonry presented in Darkness Visible, and reveals that the Craft does indeed have an important role in the world today.

      Book Description

A dazzlingly dark novel by the Nobel Laureate.

At the height of the London blitz, a naked child steps out of an all-consuming fire. Miraculously saved yet hideously scarred, tormented at school and at work, Matty becomes a wanderer, a seeker after some unknown redemption. Two more lost children await him: twins as exquisite as they are loveless. Toni dabbles in political violence, Sophy in sexual tyranny. As Golding weaves their destinies together, as he draws them toward a final conflagration, his book lights up both the inner and outer darknesses of our time.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A Freudian Analysis.......2005-10-10

As with all great books, Darkness Visable is multifaceted and open to interpretation. However, if there is a central theme to this book that I can grasp, it is a sort of Freudian notion that trauma as children, and particularly rejection by parental figures, leads - in the case of Sophy and Matty - to profound and irreversable damage later in life.

Sophy's decent into depravity started not with drugs or sexual experimentation, but with rejection by her father. As Golding describes it, with obvious Freudian overtones, as a small girl she attempted to woo him, succeeding only once in getting him to take her for a walk. During this walk, the young girl wished her mother and sister would never return - even wished they would die - so she would not have to share her father ever again. Later, there is her subsequent curiousity about the "auntie's" bedroom, and what may have transpired there; and her terrible jealousy about her father's impending second marriage.

The frustrated craving for parental love is less obvious in Matty, but nevertheless present. Matty's craving for affection becomes fixated on the pederast Pedigree, a sort of unwitting reciprocity of the latter's perverted passions, which may have led Matty to murder his rival Henderson. A desire to redeem himself and win Pedigree's approval becomes the defining feature of the rest of Matty's life.

The final irony in the book is that Matty, who has absolutely nothing in life, nevertheless finds a sort of redemption in the end, in spite of his slide towards insanity and the occult. On the other hand, by the time the story ends it is obvious that Sophy, who to all outward appearances had every advantage in life, has become an irredemable sociopath. While wounds from war and fire can be mended, there are some less visable scars that never heal.

5 out of 5 stars terrifying glimpse into the sociopathic mind.......2005-10-01

i don't know if there's ever been a character as scary as young Sophy Stanhope.

Watching her "flower" is especially disturbing as it's made plausible by hearing the thoughts insider her head.

4 out of 5 stars More Than Just "Visible" Darkness.......2005-03-15

Best known for his how-to-survive-amongst-prim-and-proper-turned-savage-children-on-a-stranded-island guide, "Lord of the Flies", Golding published a much more sinister and perhaps even more relevant work in 1979, "Darkness Visible." Though groundbreaking in its own right, Lord of the Flies took a sense of content that could legitimately appeal to all audiences without any tongue-in-cheek aspect to it---this book, however, not only cross that line, but spits on it when it passes by.

The story revolves mainly around two people: a World War II damaged boy, Matty, and Sophy, a young girl whose twin suddenly disappears one day, leaving her to grow up on her own without the presence of the other half that had been such a force in her upbringing. Golding, after presenting the two characters and their backgrounds, weaves an intricate plot of terrorism, drugs, sexual depravity, violence, and spirituality using both of them together unwittingly in many of the same events that affect their lives.

Yes, as the other reviewers said and as the editors' reviews noted, this is definitely a weird book, so if you can't stomach it, don't buy the book.. What with the deviant tendencies (take your pick---an implied child molester, a drug dealer, a dominatrix, a chess master who seems to have a new wife/mother for his children daily) of the personalities of the people Golding forms, one can easily be tempted to laugh this one off as a wannabe shocker with no real substance---but it's not. I'd rank this up with the best of his works, hands down---there is intelligence, mellifluous imagery, cleverness, wit and humor galore, a sense of cynicism, but overall, incredible creativity and prose in Darkness Visible. It may be a difficult book to get through at times because of the way it is set up and the changes in its style at random, but if you're looking for something different that will challenge some of your thinking and implant in you a different perspective on a lot of things going on in our world, don't pass it up.

5 out of 5 stars A wildly imaginative parable about madness and terrorism........1999-09-19

Golding is in top form in this story about the gradual descent into terrorism by twin siisters; and an unlikely "savior" that comes in the form of a man deformed by a bombing raid. Again, Golding proves that creating a mystery amidst thoughtful social critcism leads to a great and imaginiative story. It is dark, strange and stays with you for weeks.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent perspective on how to rate the value of life.......1999-08-20

Golding's vision of mans dark side and how the fight between good and evil is won by restraint.

In order to get the whole picture the reader needs to submerge into the lifes of all the characters and then pull back away from it all. First then it is possible to see the story and how it unfolds. It is complex and requires patience but the reward is worth it and can be rather refreshing.

        Book Description

DARKNESS VISIBLE is both a celebration of Philip Pullman and a unique guide to the rich world of his fiction. It looks at the spectrum of his work-from the flamboyant Sally Lockhart series, and the award winning CLOCKWORK and I WAS A RAT!, to his epic and internationally bestselling DARK MATERIALS TRILOGY. It shows the diverse influences-from Milton and Blake to comic books and radio drama-that have shaped his writing and uncovers the part played by Pullman's unconventional childhood.

This book is packed with never-before-seen family photos and illustrations from Pullman's beloved novels, and fresh material from recent interviews.
