I was extremely disappointed with this publication! I own multiple copies of Eleanor Burn's DVDs and matching books. I am probably one of her biggest fans. This book requires that you purchase a book from QuiltSmart which costs another $20 and a plastic template to get the specific measures to cut the fabric pieces, etc. For the price of the book, I felt that at least all of the instructions should have been within the book I was purchasing or the book should have been a lot less expensive brand new.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Read.......2007-08-28

It's an interesting read, but it's definitely geared towards a specific demographic of brides. Any bride that hasn't lived as a single woman on her own for a good amount of time will find this book interesting but not extremely helpful. Still, the author is witty and the book is an easy read.

3 out of 5 stars Tedious and biased.......2007-07-23

I hate to be the lone dissenter, but this book really didn't help me sort out my pre-wedding thoughts. A few months before my wedding, I began to feel somewhat nervous about leaving my single life behind and "becoming another person." I bought this book hoping that it would offer advice and some reassurance that my feelings were shared by other brides.

While it did indeed indicate that my sudden identity concerns were common, I found that most of Stark's advice was based on her own marriage, with a few tidbits thrown in from a few interviews she had done with several young brides--although most of it is common sense. I found myself often thinking that I was reading Stark's autobiography.

That said, it does have some good pointers and a few good stories that a lot of brides can relate to.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book !.......2007-04-04

I am a 40ish bride-to-be and I learned a lot from this book. It's not only advice about weddings, etc., but a really deep look at some serious issues that arise in relationship. Thanks Marg.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advice and a must-read for newlyweds.......2006-10-24

Someone once said that "When the Wedding March fades and the cake is in crumbs, what you have left is a marriage." There are plenty of books out there for how to plan a wedding, but few to help on the morning after. This practical advice for beginning your marriage and surviving the transition to spouse is both entertaining AND informative. Would make a great gift for a newlywed, or good class reading for those in premarital counseling.

4 out of 5 stars So Far So Good.......2006-07-04

I am about half way into the book and for the most part I am really finding it enjoyable and comforting. However, being a bride that has been living with her future husband for several years I find that some of the concepts do not pertain to me. Otherwise, highly reccommend the book for brides-to-be. It helps you realize you aren't the only one feeling this way!

On the face of it, this is the story of unsolved arson at a high-glamour resort, a mystery packed with suspects that range from crusty ski bums to radical tree huggers to the resort's own corporate honchos. But underlying this entertaining true-life plot is a greater theme that is playing out across America. Here, tensions mount between the progress-minded shareholders of Vail Resorts Inc., environmentalists, and locals who simply pine for the days when they weren't priced out of having a meal--or a life--in Vail, Colorado. Elsewhere, similar hostility brews over conflicting interests in pricey tourist regions like Taos, New Mexico; the Florida Keys; and the Hamptons of New York. So while Powder Burn is an intriguing tale on its own, it also serves as a snapshot of our country as it struggles with its final growing pains. The modern corporatization of Vail Mountain is in direct contrast to its past, when a hard-drinking fellow could ride his horse into a bar and turn himself into local legend. Daniel Glick, a special correspondent for Newsweek, masterfully uses his reporter's eye for detail to deliver the spirit and breathtaking scenery of the Rocky Mountain West. He introduces personalities in rapid-fire succession, but, to his credit, the reader never feels overwhelmed or confused. The descriptions are so vivid--from the environmentalist tracking lynx paw prints through the snow to the vacationing company president staking out a Disney World pay phone as he receives updates on the 1998 fire's damage--that they remain fixed in the reader's mind as the story unfolds. It's a story that makes interesting reading for skiers, environmentalists, or anyone intrigued by the unfolding drama in our last wild places. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

Book Description

In October, 1998 an arson caused $12 million in damage at Vail, the country's largest ski area. A shadowy radical environmental group called the Earth Liberation Front claimed credit for what the FBI called the costliest act of ecoterrorism in U.S. history. But as it turns out, credible suspects were everywhere, since Vail was owned by a New York investment firm that had alienated a wide swath of Colorado's high country residents."Who couldn't have done this?" wondered a local sheriff's investigator. More than a clever whodunit, Powder Burn scrapes away the glitz of America's premier ski destination to reveal a cautionary tale about runaway opulance and rapid change in the New West. As the Denver Post put it, "Vail is a microcosm of the disputes over growth raging across the Rockies, and Glick's take on the fire helps to fan the flames." Packed with odd characters and paranoia, with beautiful mountains and despicable actions, Powder Burn is about corporate greed, the environment, a small town and a mysterious unsolved crime. As Vail celebrates its fortieth anniversary with a full season of hoopla and self-promotion, this book makes compelling reading for skiers, true crime enthusiasts, or anyone interested in the environmental, social, and political issues raised by the evolution of the new West.

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing, but too much vulgarity and profanity.......2004-01-28

The book is interesting as an unsolved mystery, but everyone cannot be as guilty as they sound. I struggled a bit with the writing, and did not like all of the vulgarity and profanity. It did not add anything to the book, except to make me feel like I was overhearing conversations in a cheap bar. It was also apparent from the start that Glick does not like rich people (some peoople might call them successful). He could hardly talk about them in a civil tone. He used phrases like "Outrageous luxury", and "Trophyest of trophy homes."

5 out of 5 stars Powder Burn.......2003-05-15

Powder Burn was a GREAT book that provided me with the information that i needed to know about the mystery of who tourched vail. I learned some stuff in my political geography class about this that is what got me interested in it and made me read it. I recommend it to all people who like mystery books with a small twist of history.

4 out of 5 stars Rocky Mountain Whodunnit.......2002-08-08

Vail/Beaver Creek is probably my favorite vacation spot on earth in the summertime...about the only time of year I can afford it (and even then barely). This is a fascinating book, part history of Vail, part meditation on the issues surrounding growth in the affluent west (ie, how a resort for the rich and famous affects the locals and the environment), but largely a whodunnit surrounding the 1998 arson on Vail Mountain.

I wouldn't go so far at to call this a "Rocky Mountain version of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' " - Glick's writing isn't that smooth and his character development isn't that deep. But I am fascinated by this part of the country and it's a good story that he has to work with. In the end he presents all the available evidence and lets you draw your own conclusions - probably the best way to end considering that the arson itself remains unsolved.

3 out of 5 stars Great Title, Great Epilogue.......2001-08-12

My room mate asked me why it was taking so long to read this book, and my reply was that it was hard to stumble through Glick's clumsy writing. My interest, however, lay in my previous residency in CO and my interest in the subject, so I struggled through the chapters (many with very clever titles). I lived near Telluride for several years, and watched many of the same actions take place as did in Vail, re: the disparity of money and living conditions and in the attitudes of the haves and have-nots. Environmental issues are just one of the many issues in combat with residents and eco-groups against many of these new conglomerate ski companies, some with owners based far from operations.

Glick does a great job with the interviews and investigation; but his long, run-on sentences left much to be desired. If I didn't have an interest in his viewpoint on the subject, I would have put the book down in the third chapter. If you want the gist of it all, just read the epilogue, which - IMO - contains the best information and most well-written part of the book. This, alone, is worth the money, as well as the information. I'll never drive past Vail again without remembering the issues and the personal stories in this book.

Long live the lynx.

5 out of 5 stars Powder Burn.......2001-07-10

Dan Glick writes an impressive highly interesting treatise on the 1998 arsons on Vail Mountain. This book not only covers the fires but also the money lust and greed of Vail Associates (VA) and serves as a political-social commentary on big business in small Colorado mountain towns. For Coloradans and residents of the Rocky Mountain west, those interested in current social activism, and money hungy Wall Street-ers this is a must read.

3 out of 5 stars PCC Student Review.......2005-03-12

I read this book to a 4th grade nephew of mine, being he is the only family member I have anywhere near the desired age for the assignment given. The child already displayed adaquate knowledge of the ability to discern the topic touched upon. The concept of money was not new to him and was quickly able the book shuffled around the concept of equal amounts, just grouped differently. He was not so captivated by the illustration(s) and found them to be rather on the mediocre side, *kid is spoiled on flash animation and japanimation*. He did say that perhaps at one time he'd expressed interest in the book, but that that time had since passed. Good book, wrong audience for me I think.

My Kindergarten-aged son loves this book. He enjoyed seeing all the different pets that the monsters bought. He also got very good at figuring out how to make 10 cents from different combinations of coins.

    Book Description

Love and betrayal complicate a robbery gone wrong in this edgy true-crime novel based on a 1965 Argentine bank robbery. There's the drama of the botched raid itself, followed by a blowout afterparty, an attempted double-crossing of the corrupt local authorities, and a final shootout where, as a last act of rebellion, the robbers burn all the loot. This gritty tale has been adapted for a major motion picture by renowned Argentine director Marcelo Pinyero.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still Looking for a Really Good Translation.......2003-12-12

Make no mistake about it. This is a so-so translation of a truly fine work by Ricardo Piglia. Only those who are able to read the original in Spanish will appreciate my otherwise questionable rating of five stars.

In the first place, this is NOT a novel. It is a book written along the lines of Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood," an account of an actual crime using the perspective of motive and characterization as a basis for constructing not so much a narrative as an imaginative analysis of events.

For those who want an even more penetrating and dramatic version of the story, the film "Plata Quemada" is available on dvd. It recreates the original book in such a way as to emphasize the linear narrative elements generally absent in the printed account. Moreover, it features brilliant directing, acting, and cinematography together with an absolutely mesmerizing soundtrack.

Now, as to the present translation: it is workmanlike and literal. I cannot fault it in that regard, as it tries to make sense for the English-speaking audience of an original vernacular laden with "lunfardo" and "porteño" conceits that are utterly missing in standard dictionaries. For those of us whose Spanish is textbook with some few Mexican words, that is a necessary component in understanding the original. But I can assert unequivocally that the style, the flavor, and the underlying connotations of the original are simply not there. Additionally, it employs British rather than American equivalents of street slang and figures of speech that most American readers will just not get at all.

I realize that this is a critique rather than a review. The reader can find out what the "story" is all about by reading the canned reviews. Bank robberies and cops-and-robbers stories are pretty much all alike anyway. This one is different in that it centers on some very unusual characters, especially given the time (1965) of the action. While popular acceptance or even consideration of such things as widespread police corruption, drug use, gays, and uniquely Argentine history was rare at the time in our own society, our collective consciousness over the years has been invested with a deeper awareness of the human capacity for all kinds of behavior previously recognized only in less clinical ways, ranging from total depravity to the most sublime and redeeming kinds of aspirations.

"Plata Quemada," which is more properly translated in relation to the author's true intent as something like "burning the money," is one hell of a good story. But that does not make it a novel.

    Book Description

Casey Jones is a take-no-prisoners female PI who wouldn't be caught dead whining over a lousy boyfriend or asking for help. She's too busy lifting weights, running off at the mouth and making doughnut runs for her overstuffed business partner, the larger-than-life Bobby D.--a 360 lb. lothario whose little black book is almost as big as his appetite. With a stretch in the Florida pen behind her and no official PI license, Casey comes from nothing and has nothing to lose. She lives full speed ahead, with a healthy respect for the screw-ups of others.

Only this time, it's Casey who's stepped in it. When a favorite client gets killed on her watch, Casey vows to find the killer no matter what the cost, either personally or professionally. When the trail leads her into the rarified ranks of North Carolina's social elite, Casey's dirt-poor childhood comes rushing back in a wave of self-doubt that adds fire to her considerable fury. She fights to regain her self-confidence and expose an incendiary killer out to destroy more than her name. Casey moves from farmland to the mountains, from debutante balls to drag bars, from boardrooms to bedrooms-and even down the prickly path of lust-at-first-sight as she battles unknown enemies anxious to see her, quite literally, go up in flames.

    5 out of 5 stars A Laugh-Out-Loud Mystery.......2002-09-20

I've read all of Munger's books except her most recent, and every one of them makes me laugh out loud as I'm reading. I write business and technical material for a living, so when I read for enjoyment I prefer fiction, and mysteries are my favorite. I read (and enjoy) my share of Kellerman, Sandford, Pearson, Harris, etc. AND Munger! I disagree with anyone who says she doesn't develop her characters. I definitely feel as though I've gotten to know Casey Jones and I look forward to each new adventure. Casey is an overweight, overbearing female private eye whose thoughts and actions are not what you'd expect if you're used to following the males of the mystery genre...and they shouldn't be! Munger's stereotypes of southerners are surpassed only by her own stereotypes of northerners, and from what I've read of the author, who should know these stereotypes better than someone who was born in the south but spent considerable time in the north. It's true, I pick up Munger's books when I want a "lighter" mystery to read, and "Money to Burn" was just the ticket. When I finished it, I was already looking forward to her next book.

4 out of 5 stars Brassy and bold Casey.......2002-04-15

This is the 3rd book in the series.Casey is the best PI character in the mystery genre and is an great character to read. She get's in over her head, loves what she does and meets the men who love her for her.

4 out of 5 stars Money To Burn.......2001-08-05

I loved this one. I ran across it from a friend and got the other two last summer. I had no idea what a Krispy Kreme doughnut was and now I make 2 hour drives to Vegas to get two dozen... If you do this also, just bring home and put in micro for 6 seconds and then, go to heaven...pick up the book and eat.

Casey is sassy, entertaining, and real. I love mysteries and this was one of my favorite. It is an easy read and great for a weekend quick pick me up. Good job, Katy. Keep em coming.

4 out of 5 stars Sorry about the four stars..........2001-07-18

Munger is a five-star writer, but this story that revolves around tobacco is one I couldn't get into for the subject matter. It also involves a poor little rich girl, which is a plotline that's never appealed to me, not when the girl's old enough to change her own life.

But the plot is a solid one, the characters varied and real and mean when they need to be. Casey Jones is a great lead character. I worry about her drinking (and driving) and eating habits. 170 pounds of muscle? Tell that one to the guy behind the Krispy Kreme counter, Case. And she's got a fascinating romantic lead in this volume. (So glad to see he stuck around for at least one more book!)

Of the four Munger books I've read so far, this is the only one that really didn't grab and hold me until I couldn't put it down... but I still give it four stars for tension and style.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome -- 1st Rate -- True-Crime Buff's Dream.......1999-08-26

This is one of, if not, THE best true-crime book I've read. . . and, believe me, I've read almost all of them. What a page-turner!!! Finally a true-crime book that doesn't give away the ending, but let's you see the engrossing tale spin out before you. Just when you think you know all of the secrets of the Benson family, another one appears. . . and you can't stop reading and wanting for more. I was so intrigued by the book (and the author's gripping writing style) that I did some legal research to see how the various court cases involved in the story were resolved. A true-crime buff's dream!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Money to Burn , but well worth it.......2005-09-24

An exciting and imaginative tale of a daring crime by the most unlikely of criminals, a federal district court judge and an interesting cast of accomplices. Fast-paced. Well written. Dialogue is natural, descriptions very readable.

But perhaps one of the most interesting facets of the book, at least to those of us that are lawyers, especially lawyers who try cases in front of this district-court-judge/author, James Zagel, is the insight it gives into the workings of the judicial mind.

4 out of 5 stars Call Central Casting, Please.......2004-04-01

As a former prosecutor, I enjoyed this book. A nice set-up, characters we are ambivalent about (good people don't rob Federal Reserve banks, do they?), a lot of tension, and one or two surprises. The book is satisfactorily written, but I did feel I was reading a particularly well thought-out back story for a screen play. By the end of the book, I was itching to cast the Hollywood stars to play this story on the big screen. I don't see why a movie based on Zagel's book shouldn't give John Grisham a run for his money. And if money to make the film is no object, my choices are: Paulie Devine: Jeff Bridges. Dave: Kurt Russell. Charity: Angela Bassett. Trimble: Brad Pitt. Plymouth: Andy Garcia. Prindiville: James Rebhorn. Corman: Brian Dennehy. Ellen: Patricia Clarkson.

    3 out of 5 stars reads like a screenplay.......2004-02-12

I thought the first half of this book was building up quite well.
There was good character development and decent depth to make it a non-linear story.
But for me, once the heist was perpetrated it started to read like a screenplay for an so-so movie (eg see Sneakers for a similar break-in/heist premise). The storyline became too contrite for my liking (ie almost every prescient move of the criminals resolved to some masterstroke).
I liked the court cases that the judge presided over, some of them got me intrigued about the author's moral judgements.(no pun intended ;-P)
Still, if this was a movie I would go see it. As a book I expected more (especially for a debut effort).
Overall I would say I am marginally satisfied but I won't be seeking any future books from this author.

5 out of 5 stars This book should definitely be made into a movie.......2003-10-18

I have to say that this is probably in the top 5 or 10 books of all time favorites that i have red.I definitely hope this author puts more books out especially if they are as good as this.

Lookout john grisham this book wrote by James Zagel who is a U.S. district court judge. The story about a sitting judge the honorable Paul Devine who dreams up a wild plan to rob the federal reserve in chicago of 100 million dollars by using his life long friend Dave Brody who is a heroic firefighter and paramedic who also happens to be a arsonist for hire for special jobs, Charity Scott who is a sergeant of the guards at the reserve and Charity's husband Trimble Young who happens to be a maintenance electrician. The judge is instigating this not only for the money but a bit of payback against the head of the reserve Redding Prindiville who had a previous case before the judge where he basically cheated a little old lady and the damage Redding caused the judge's wive in furthering her career.

Like i said before hollywood should make a movie of this there are many deffirent turns in this story its definitely fastpaced and a great read

    5 out of 5 stars Intrigue at it's finest.......2003-08-21

Who among us hasn't been angry at the system? Or wondered what it would be like to pull off the perfect crime? Luckily for you, you can read about a very believable guy whose daydream turned into reality.

Since we all love living vicariously, put on your seatbelt and prepare for some fun. Here's a very respected guy, a Federal judge no less, who is ready to buck the system. With his intellect and connections, he learns everything he needs to know to rob the Federal Reserve. The trick, though, is to make them think they haven't been robbed. It's such an intriguing plot that I couldn't put the book down. What made it even better was knowing that this little work of "fiction" was actually written by a Federal Judge! Hmmmm.... wonder what he was thinking of when he was hearing cases all day.

Ever since reading this book, I'm a little more alert every time I walk into my bank. I dream of the greenbacks in the vault and wonder what it would be like to have a few stacks of my own. Maybe it's not possible, but it's sure nice to dream. After all, if James Zagel's guy can pull off a heist, why can't I?
