Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Alaskan port information.......2007-10-08

This book was very helpful in determining which cities we wanted to include on our cruise port stops, BEFORE booking our trip. We were also able to plan ahead our list of "must see and do" in each port. This book will definitely be used as a guidebook to take with us to Alaska.

4 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2007-09-12

I just returned from a cruise to alaska and found this book to be very helpful. I work in a cruise related field and found it contained great reviews of different cruise lines. Port information was easy to follow. The "voice" of the book was friendly and eager to help. I recommend it to anyone who is considering or going to Alaska by ship.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of cruising Alaska.......2007-08-10

This book is a good general overview of cruising in Alaska. It would be particularly helpful for first-time cruisers, as much of book is spent explaining how a cruise "works"-- dining, tipping, etc. I appreciated the recommendations on what to pack for Alaska, and they made several good suggestions that I wouldn't have thought of myself. The book was not as up-to-date as I would have liked (Norwegian Pearl had not sailed as of it's writing), but I guess that's understandable. There were some good suggestions for things to do at the various ports on your own, aside from the shore excursions. In all, a helpful, easy-to-access book.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Information.......2007-07-12

This book has way more information than you really need to know and can be some what ponderous reading it, but I found it very useful in planning my Alaskan cruise. My Fiance and I opted for the South bound cruise from Whittier to Vancouver on the Carnival Spirit and had a wonderful trip. When you go to Alaska, you will enjoy the scenery much more than the weather.

5 out of 5 stars Frommer's Alaska Cruises & Ports of Call 2007 (Frommer's Complete) by Jerry Brown.......2007-06-27

This book was just what I expected it to be. It was in perfect condition, the price was great. I received it right away after ordering.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for the smart vacationeer.......2007-08-17

In these book are great practical guide for the new and not-so new to cruising. It tells you detailed review on most aspects of cruising at Disney- from staterooms, dining, excursions and "tricks" to making your vacation more manageable and less overwhelming. My favorite part is how to avoid being sea sick in the cruise with numerous suggestions. The other part is the sample menu in the dining areas. The list of items to bring in a cruise is an invaluable tool as I have committed the mistake of bringing the wrong outfits for my last cruise. Definitely indispensable!

5 out of 5 stars best info source for Disney Mediterranean.......2007-05-30

A month ago our family suddenly booked a Disney Mediterranean 11 night cruise. Having never cruised, I panicked. This book that will be in my purse the whole time. It describes the ship, the ports, and answers about a million other questions. As a novice, I have since visited many websites, the library, and bookstores and this is the most complete and fun to read book of any. I love the writers' enthusiasm and attention to detail. Passporter's packing list is worth the book price!

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-05-24

We have cruised before but found this book extremely helpful on tips for the Disney Cruise Line. We appreciated the information on what could be reserved in advance. The information regarding our ports of call and shore excursions helped us decide what we wanted to do once we get there.I highly recommend this book for first time Disney Crisers.

4 out of 5 stars Best Comprehensive Guide.......2007-03-13

We have cruised with the Disney Cruise Line many times, and felt like we knew it inside and out. However, this guide gave us some great new insights to the ship and the many excursions available. We especially liked the info on the staterooms and the best locations to be on the ship for decreased noise and accessability. The shore excursion ratings were very helpful as well. We would highly recommend this guide for new and seasoned Disney Cruise travelers.

5 out of 5 stars Disney Cruise in your future?.......2007-02-08

This book covers EVERYTHING....from planning to the actual cruise, PassPorter's guide is all you'll need for a fantastic trip. It is so detailed, I can't imagine there is anything you won't know before you leave! Micki

Book Description

A cruise is a complete vacation, so it's important that you choose the one that's right for you. Frommer's Cruises & Ports of Call is the most user-friendly, opinionated, and comprehensive guide you can buy before you set sail. We provide in-depth coverage on cruises departing from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, Alaska, Bermuda, Mexico and Canada.

Unlike rating systems used in other guides, our system is simple. We break down the essential elements of a cruise experience (dining, activities, children's activities, entertainment, service, overall enjoyment, and overall value), and rate them from "poor" to "outstanding." Photos of each ship combine with the text to give a better sense of the very real differences among the various lines.

Most important, this is the only cruise guide that provides the real prices people pay for cruises, not just the rack rates. Other guides tell you that a seven-night cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas costs $1,919. You can pay that if you want to, but only Frommer's tells you that the same cruise is selling for $999. We give both the rack rates and the discount price for every cruise we review. This feature alone makes Frommer's Cruises and Ports of Call by far the most valuable trip-planning book among cruise guides.

Our authors, noted cruise experts who've personally checked out every ship sailing in and around North America, offer candid and unbiased opinions on them all. They are completely up to date, with all the latest developments and the newest ships. You'll also get complete coverage of the major port destinations, with advice on how to spend your limited time ashore.

I have cruised many times before and found this book to be quite honest in its observations. We are sailing to Hawaii and I was able to find the information I wanted. I think this is a great resource for anyone considering a cruise vacation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great tips and evaluation of different cruise lines.......2007-08-23

This guide was a terrific help in confirming our thoughts for excursions. Had used the Frommer's guide for the Caribbean ports of call and loved it. This is just as helpful. Super ideas for things to do on your own, where to eat, what to buy. I especially liked the comparison charts for alternative cruise lines in categories like dining, activities, service, etc. This guide is worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Too much cruise, not enough ports.......2006-06-26

The book is a very comprehensive review of all of the cruise lines and individuals ships cruising in the Med. In fact half of the book is devoted to this area. However, I really wanted much more on the ports and excursions, which I felt were not covered in detail at all. The cruise web sites and message boards, including on Frommer.com, are far more in-depth.

1 out of 5 stars Its all about ships.......2001-02-05

I have several cruise books but found this to be the least informative. 90% of the book focuses on the ships and cruise lines themselves. While that may be helpful to some I don't need that much info on the ship and cruise lines. Do any of us care about the ship measurements? I wanted more information on the ports of call and general cruising advice etc.

The best book I have found so far, which also includes information on cruise lines and ships just not the whole book, is Anne Vipond's "Mediterranean by Cruise Ship." This book not only covers the cruise lines but is an excellent primer for many large and small ports of call. If you only get one book, her's should be it.

5 out of 5 stars Perusing European Cruising.......2000-08-06

I must say, this is one of the most comprehensive European cruising guides I have ever seen. Floating your boat, so to speak, is in my opinion, the very best way to travel. Why? Because you always have a lush entertaining "home" to return to at the end of each exotic port.

Frommer's gives us an elaborately planned book with maps, cabin layouts, colorful photography , and a seemingly endless wave of useful information.

Just some of the material covered: Part 1) getting married at sea, best ships for families, most romantic ships, best ports, watching out for scams, shipboard gyms and spas, and important money matters.

Part 2) The cruise lines and their ships, cruise line ratings at a glance, how to compare prices, and almost every line is then reviewed in depth. Including my favorite, Cunard.

Part 3) The Ports of Call! We're not in Kansas anymore!--a glorious comparison section of fabulous places I have been and others I yearn to see: The steep donkey rides up Santorini, Greece, The windmills and wild (human) life in Mykonos, to The French Riviera & Monte Carlo and more.

So, get your bags packed, and be an experienced cruiser with Frommers, even if it is your virginal maritime thrill!

A book to thumb and "ahhhh" through-over & over again.

Thanks for your interest & comments--CDS

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Alaskan Cruising.......2007-04-13

My wife and I bought this book late last year to help us plan for an upcoming Alaskan cruise. I had never cruised before and she had only been on one cruise to the Bahamas many years ago. Fodor's gave us everything we needed in one book. As usual for Fodor's, they gave great descriptions and suggestions for all the ports of call for sailing vessels from the Seattle/Vancouver area, up to the northern coast of Alaska. Each port of call game with all the usual Fodor's helpful tips, suggestions and maps to get you around.

What sold me on this book over others was that unlike some others, Fodor's didn't just go over all the ports of call but also all the cruise lines, ships, and cruising in general. For a first time sailor it was very helpful. Packing, tipping, planning, travel to and from, breadowns of each ship, what they're demographic is like, food on the ships, and a whole bunch of other information. For the experienced sailor this may all be stuff you've seen before but for a newbie like me it was great. I highly recommend this book.

        Book Description

The struggles in the Levant after World War II are brought painfully to life in this delicate, compassionate novel.

Ossyane, a young Lebanese of both aristocratic Ottoman and humble Armenian origins, goes to Montpellier, France, to study away from the burden of his liberal father's revolutionary ambitions. World War II breaks out and Ossyane is drawn into the Resistance, where he meets Clara, who is Jewish. He returns to Beirut and, despite the obvious obstacles, to a happy marriage with Clara. The Jewish-Muslim couple move to Haifa, but if one war has made a hero out of Ossyane, another, much closer to home, is destined to split him from his wife and separate him from the people and the world that he loves.

5 out of 5 stars Ports of Call.......2007-07-06

Don't expect this love story to go where you think. Amin Maalouf unfolds a tale of hopes, joys and disappointments, in which the deserving stumble and fall, the undeserving rise up - or is it the other way around? Just when you are ready to catch your breath, his story line diverts you down a different path. The narrative within a narrative shows how the human will can struggle against overwhelming odds. The tribulations of star-crossed Muslim-Jewish lovers - Ossyane and Clara - keep the drama on edge, right to the very end.

4 out of 5 stars Good novel by a good author........2005-11-15

This is the third novel of Amin Maalouf which I have completed, first was Samarkand and second Leo the African , I cannot really rank them may be because there is no comparison and all of them are written in different historical perspectives.
Ports of call is a love story of Ossyane, an ottoman muslim by blood, born in Beirut and Clara a jew both of them meet in France in second world war days at a comrades home and this single meeting becomes a cornerstone for their marriage which takes place much later, they live together for a very brief period and then live for decades with new drawn boundaries between them, to meet again only. I read this novel continuously to complete it but then at last ten pages I left it for one more day because I did not want to finish this beautiful story so quickly.
It is one more very well written novel by Amin Maalouf.

        5 out of 5 stars My Favourite.......2002-09-18

This is the most outstanding of all the Maalouf novels I have read- and I must tell you I read almost all. This is probably also because the novel starts at my birthplace Adana, a southern town in Turkey. The novel is loaded with overflowing emotions. Not only I read it once every year but also I have gifted it at least 3-4 times.

5 out of 5 stars AMIN MAALOUF IS BRILLIANT... CANT PUT THE BOOK DOWN........2002-09-01

When I bought this book I was sure that Amin Maalouf wasn't going to be able to write something as good as "Leo Africanus"; I was wrong!!! Even though these two books are totally different, the author managed to make something brilliant out of a love story.
The author wrote the story in a really simple and exciting way; He permits the reader to imagine everything in a clear and perfect way.
