5 out of 5 stars A Real Treasure!.......2004-06-27

This is one of those books I can't recommend highly enough if you love old Hollywood or the flamboyant architecture and graphic design of Hollywood in the 20's - 50's. I picked it up on a cut-out table in New York about 10 years ago and have come to appreciate it as one of the best books in my library - in fact it's one of those books that is always getting borrowed from friends who are graphic designers or work at ad agencies looking for inspiration.

Jim Heimann deserves much praise for assembling what is obviously a huge labor of love with lots of great photos and illustrations that you will never see anywhere else - everything from cocktail napkins and matchbooks to beautiful interior photography and paparazzi pics of the stars at play.

Also I'd like to disagree with the review - I actually found the writing in the book to be pretty engaging. It's fairly straightforward and to the point., luckily since there is a lot of history to cover.

Anyway it's an amazing book that I would highly recommend.

Whether it's taking on an Imperial ship designed to wipe out entire alien species or battling amidst a vicious civil war fueled by both the Rebellion and the Empire, entering an abandoned Star Destroyer seeking a mysterious prize or settling a dispute between an Imperial outpost and the local leadership, there's no job too deadly for the man in the Mandalorian armor - if the price is right!

3 out of 5 stars I love Fett as much as the next guy.......2007-06-29

this is a good collection of Fett One-Shots, though not representative of his work. my main gripe is that 2/4 of the one-shots is done by Cam Kennedy--not my favorite Fett artist. i was glad to see a range of older and newer stuff, but i think DH could've put together a better selection. hopefully, this TPB is successful enough that DH will release another collection, esp given the rarity of some Fett tales, notably Twin Engines of Destruction and the Wizard 1/2.

3 out of 5 stars Boba Fett doing what he does.......2007-06-07

The graphic novel collects issues seven and twenty-eight of the comic-book series "Star Wars Empire" along with a couple of one-shots.

In "Sacrifice", the governor of Solem hires Fett to hunt down Yolan Bren, a local Rebel leader. I found this to be the weakest story and I had difficulty differentiating between all the green aliens.

"Wreckage" finds Fett searching through the remains of a wrecked Star Destroyer for a mysterious box. This story is undoubtedly the best of the bunch. The vivid artwork is all the more noticeable as the story has very little dialog.

In "Overkill", a junior Imperial officer enlists Fett's talents to help him get a promotion. This story is pretty good too, with a great cartoon-like quality to the artwork.

Finally, an older Boba Fett becomes an "Agent of Doom" when he is hired to hunt down two Imperials engaging in genocide. An okay story with very moody artwork.

While there is nothing new or particularly remarkable here, it is an entertaining addition to any Fett fan's collection.

Pastor and motivational speaker Robert H. Schuller is perhaps most renowned for his weekly "Hour of Power" church service, broadcast worldwide from the glass Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. In Turning Hurts into Halos, Schuller uses his storytelling skills and personal anecdotes to explain the spiritual role of pain and suffering. "Hurts" can ultimately make us stronger, more faithful people, crowning us with angelic halos, Schuller claims. He refers to his wife's recent heart surgery, his own brain surgery, his daughter losing a leg in a motorcycle accident, and the humiliation he endured after being wrongfully accused and sued for assaulting a flight attendant (he was acquitted). Through his personal pain and by helping others who have endured much worse shame and loss, Schuller has learned the value of holding onto hope, turning to God, and gaining perspective on one's pain.

Book Description

"Turning Hurts Into Halos and Scars into Stars" is Robert Schuller like you've never heard before. Though it echoes the extraordinary insight and encouragement you have come to count on from Dr. Schuller, never before has he written a book so personal, so moving. This book is about adversity. Tragedy. Suffering. Despair. But it's also about hope, joy, and the eternal victory in Jesus. This book is about the cross.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Truth.......2004-04-30

In choosing to respond appropriately to suffering you ensure that the experience leads to something beneficial. Free will is involved in that decision. Dr. Schuller writes, "I promise you that there is gain in every pain." Our reaction to pain is crucial! That choice determines whether we will expeience the benefits associated with the suffering process.

Hurts do not endure permanently. Pain passes. Trials end. He tells us to view pain as a process not an event. God has a purpose for everything. People who have made significant marks are the ones who have responded successfully to adversity. Thank God Dr. Schuller is in that group and left this work and others showing us that we too can make our way through life's challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Never be victimized again - only victorious!.......2001-03-07

Dr. Schuller's first chapter is so aptly titled! "Welcome To The Human Race" - we are all hurting human beings! What sets us apart is our ability to recognize that the hurt is not punishment from God, but instead a reality of our life on earth. Schuller takes his reader through a series of practical analyses of hurt, in much the same way that Elisabeth Kubler Ross taught us to move through the stages of grief. How heavy is the hurt? How hardy (what is its lifespan)? and, How healthy is this hurt? He reminds us frequently that we must constantly examine our priorities and renew our faith that with God, all things are possible. Not an easy road to take, but worth it.

The book is written in an easy to follow manner and uses real life illustrations of both the author's personal struggles with hurt and those of others who survived life's worst tragedies and came out of these fires strengthened and renewed. Had Dr.Schuller omitted his own experiences, this would be just another sampling of inspirational story gathering. But as the "father of possibility thinking" was feeling victimized, he realized that he "needed to delve deep into the meat and potatoes of handling hurts and get over that seductive, self-absorbing, pity-party reaction." And he shares the wisdom of his exploration with us in an easy to read format that time and again reminds us of Schuller's powerful commitment to God.

Both believers and non-believers will find this book helpful as they search for the skills to cope with the hurts that come with divorce, death, destruction and our perceived failures. I liken it to Christian counselor Gary Smalley's teaching that we must learn to "treasure hunt" within a hurtful experience and find ways to bring acceptance and peace back to our lives.

This may be the ultimate gift book for a hurting friend!

5 out of 5 stars Honest help for dealing with life's afflictions.......1999-11-17

I haven't been a big fan of Schuller's other books. The ideas were good, but there was too much "fluff" along with the "stuff." Hurts into Halos breaks the mold by grappling with the real-world issues which afflict us all. Schuller reveals his own struggles and how his faith in God provided practical guidance for navigating difficult waters. I'm giving copies to many friends for Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars This is an extremely practical and enlightening book........1999-09-06

This thought-provoking publication authored by the well-known Dr. Robert Schuller certainly should stimulate the curiosity of its readers. But to round out their spiritual education, they will benefit from the perusal of "From Here to Greater Happiness or How to Change Your Life for Good" by Joel Marie Teutsch and Champion Kurt Teutsch. First printed in 1959, their book really started the consciousness revolution, including assertiveness training and the holistic health movement. It certainly changed my life-and that of everyone I love and know-for good.

5 out of 5 stars The most comforting book I have ever read........1999-09-05

I as all humans have been hurt during my life and didn't at times know where to turn. One day at the library I was I felt, being lead to read this most spiritual book.I know I must continue to read it at different times in my life to give me the strength to go forward, and change the hurts to halo's.

    Book Description

This text provides a comprehensive and timely introduction to general relativity. The foundations of the theory in Part I are thoroughly developed together with the required mathematical background from differential geometry in Part III. The six chapters in Part II are devoted to tests of general relativity and to many of its applications. Binary pulsars are studied in considerable detail. Much space is devoted to the study of compact objects, especially to black holes. This includes a detailed derivation of the Kerr solution, Israel's proof of his uniqueness theorem, and derivations of the basic laws of black hole physics. The final chapter of this part contains Witten's proof of the positive energy theorem.

The book addresses undergraduate and graduate students in physics, astrophysics and mathematics. It is very well structured and should become a standard text for a modern treatment of gravitational physics. The clear presentation of differential geometry makes it also useful for string theory and other fields of physics, classical as well as quantum.

General Relativity is a complete revision and extension of Straumann's well-known classic textbook "General Relativity and Relativistic Astrophysics."

      Book Description

Why are sport stars central to celebrity culture? What are the implications of their fame?

Proceeding from a broadly based discussion of heroism, fame and celebrity, Smart addresses a number of prominent modern sports and sport stars, including Michael Jordan (basketball), David Beckham (football), Tiger Woods (golf), Anna Kournikova and the Williams sisters (tennis).

He analyses the development of modern sport in the UK and USA, demonstrating the key economic and cultural factors that have contributed to the popularity of sport stars, while examining issues such as race and gender, the impact of professionalization, growing media coverage, the role of agents and the increasing presence of commercial corporations providing sponsorship and endorsement contracts.

This book situates the sport star as the embodiment of the various tensions of age, class, race, gender and culture. It argues that sporting figures possess an increasingly rare quality of authenticity that gives them the capacity to lift and inspire people. The book is a major contribution to the sociology and culture of sport and celebrity.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars entertaining, sweet, sad, thoughtful, and wonderful!.......2006-02-14

This is the story of a father-less boy named Hamid, who went on a journey to save his little, blind sister from danger and a life of sorrow, darkness, and unhappiness. As Hamid embarks on this journey, the outcome is a life of freedom, the joy of seeing his sister happy and unharmed, and the Everlasting Love of God. The author shows her knowledge of God and preaches through a kind nurse who gives shelter to poor African children (and adults!). This book makes you think of the misfortune of others, and to see the little things in life that bring great joy. I would recomend this book no matter what.

4 out of 5 stars It will keep you entertained.......2005-12-09

Star of Light was one of those books that you can't put down until the end. Sometimes you can predict what will happen but most of the time you will be surprised. This story is about a happy family who lives in North Africa, but after the father dies the mother gets re-married to a mean guy. They find out their littlest baby girl, Kinza, is blind so the mean stepfather says she is no good and they will have to sell her to the old beggar man in town. The mother is very upset so she tells her oldest son Hammid to run away with the baby. They have to carefully find their way to a kind missionary's house while the evil stepfather is after them.

This book will give you an idea of life in the streets, in a missionary's home, and as a blind girl in long ago times. The ending is happy, but not so happy that you think, "well that was totally unrealistic." I think the author is very talented and kids of all ages will enjoy this book, whether it is read aloud to them or they read it themselves. Boys and girls will like it equally because there are two main characters, one's a boy and one's a girl.

If you want to find out more READ THE BOOK!

      5 out of 5 stars A Touching Story.......2005-07-28

This book is exciting and will catch your attention. It also shows a common boy showing true love to his sister, by risking his life for hers.

5 out of 5 stars Star Of Light Book Review.......2004-03-12

Star Of Light is an adventurous book of fiction. It was written by Patricia St John and published by Moody Press in 2002. All 158 pages are filled with dangerous exitment.

In Star Of Light there are two main characters Hamid, a brave and kind person and his sister Kinza, who is a blind girl who loves life. They live in the deasert plains of Africa in a small village.

When Kinza and Hamind`s step father decides to sell Kinza to a blind beggar, their mother told Hamid to take Kinza and secretly travel to to a village. Living in the village is and english nurse she said. Surley the nurse sill take Kinza in. When Kinza and Hamid finnaly got to the village, Hte nurse did take Kinza in. She gave her warm food and fresh clothes to wear.

While Kinza and her friend Jenny were walking, Kinza`s step father kidnapped Kinza. Jenny told the nurse and Hamid and her went to get Kinza back. When they returned home Jenny asked why they had bought Kinza back for such a high price. The nurse said, " I love Kinza just like God does, because god loves me, I pour out my love on Kinza.

This book is interesting because so much excitment was going on. The best part was when the nurse told Jenny why she loved Kinza so much. Star Of Light is a very adventurous book that you should read.

5 out of 5 stars Star of Light.......2000-05-08

Star of Light is a beautiful, yet sensitive fictional book (though it seems like non-fiction) . Set in North Africa, this book is about a little boy named Hamid and his blind sister, Kinza. Because Kinza is blind and a girl, a double curse in that part of the world, Hamid's stepfather wants to sell her to a beggar who will use her to make money. But Hamid loves Kinza and is determined to save her from an inevitable life of abuse. So he steals her away and brings her to a strange English nurse who loves all children no matter how they look or what disabilities they have. Truly a spellbinding book. I liked this book because I felt like I was there, in North Africa, years before I was born. If you like this book I would also recommend The Rainbow Garden, also written by Patricia St. John, and The Hidden Jewel.

        Book Description

Christians have always engaged the world around them and reflected upon the connections between faith and culture. Faith Journey through Fantasy Lands engages popular culture in the hugely successful stories of Harry Potter, Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings. Author Dalton guides the reader through these contemporary fantasy stories, illuminating them with light from the Christian faith journey. The book opens doors to faith-sharing, particularly with young people, while also taking on the issues within the stories that have led some Christians to reject them.

4 out of 5 stars A Review Of Faith Journey Through Fantasy Lands.......2007-03-10

Few discussions will provoke opinions among believers as heated as whether or not Christians ought to enjoy works of popular fantasy.

On the one hand, some claim believers should avoid these realms of the imagination. On the other, there are those Christians so desperate to justify their interest with a veneer of spirituality that they try to establish one to one correlations between these entertaining stories and Holy Scripture.

"Faith Journey Through Fantasy Lands: A Christian Dialogue With Harry Potter, Star Wars & Lord Of The Rings" by Russell Dalton endeavors to provide a balance between these competing outlooks.

While highlighting the parts of these works that appeal to enduring values, Dalton also admits that neither are these stories themselves Scripture. Rather, he writes, "This book takes an approach that goes beyond a `thumbs up' or `thumbs down' evaluation of fiction and film. It gives the reader a chance to reflect whether or not the behaviors and beliefs of the characters in today's fantasy stories are consistent with the Christian faith, but it also looks at the questions these stories demand of our faith by entering into a dialogue between these fantasy stories and the Christians story (7)."

Rather than condemn The Lord Of The Rings, Star Wars, or even Harry Potter, "Faith Journey Through Fantasy Lands" prudently counsels that the problems that arise in reference to these stories often lie not so much in the stories themselves but in those that read them. For example, most that read Harry Potter are not going to end up sacrificing goats or taking oaths of unending allegiance to Satan. Thus, Dalton suggests, parents must decide for themselves how much exposure to Star Wars, Harry Potter, and The Lord Of The Rings their children should receive.

Though for the most part balanced in his approach, the reader will no doubt detect a hint of political correctness seeping into Dalton's exposition. For example, he does not use the phrase "Kingdom of God" but rather "The Reign Of God." Likewise, Dalton does not refer to Jesus as "the Son of Man" but rather as "the Son of Humanity".

Dalton also gets all maudlin that the characters in these stories are primarily White. But since Middle Earth is said to correspond to some kind of pre-historic Europe and Hogwarts is a British alchemical school, what does he expect?

If Aragorn had had such vacillating attitudes, Sauron would have still been ruling over Middle Earth by the end of the third film.

Even if one disagrees with the conclusions drawn by "Faith Journey Through Fantasy Lands", one has to admit Dalton approaches the issue in an overall even handed manner carefully respecting the opinions on each side.

This is an excellent analysis of a most important modern "miracle" - the religious reasons behond the huge success of these epic tales of high romance in a culture that too often seems fixated on the squalid. I would recommend to go with it Hal GP Colebatch's "Return of the heroes: The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Social Conflict." This is a literay, political, historical and religious study, full of information and insight. The two books go together to make essential reading for the culturally literate in the 21st Century.

4 out of 5 stars Repetitive, simply told, unmelodramatic, hypnotic.......2003-05-27

Unlike many survivor's accounts, Weil's novel (which I assume from the biographical material prefacing this work is probably quite autobiographical) does not deal with any aftermath to the Holocaust. The book breaks off just as the narrator chooses to hide and therefore conitnue his fight against the never-named but omnipresent "them."

The rapacity and cunning of "them" remind you of Art Speigelman's "Maus," and I wonder if he read this novel earlier. The picture of daily life outside the camps is told with details which constantly circle back to the narrator's lost (married) lover, and understandably, these obsessions only fade gradually, as the transports impinge more directly upon the Jews.

The metaphor of the circus, in which the only animals are people, is sustained admirably in this section of the novel, and the translation conveys well the bare irony of the minimalist style. Almost childlike in its observations, the tone of the novel may be off-putting to some readers wanting more elaborated insight. It took me about sixty or seventy pages to get used to the rhythm, and only in the halfway point did it fully compel me. But I read it in one sitting.

Why? By its steady momentum, you are carried into the horror even as it does not overwhelm you. Through the control of the protagonist, you too gain control over the situation, and resolve to resist the temptation to give in to complacency.

The characters remain in your memory: Roubitschek and his onion, the narrator's almost comic aunt and uncle who blame the whole Nazi invasion it seems on their nephew, Ruzema's memory, and most of all, Tomas the cat. Rarely has a pet assumed such an evocative place in such a story. The daily task of finding food when you can buy so little. The scene of the names being called for transport in the synagogue, the depictions of the grave digging detail, the narrator's shattered home, and the growing despair that battles against the realization that the slow advance of the Allies means that people "out there" are actually fighting to save the narrator: all these add up subtly to a powerful testimony.

The narrator must wear a star that shines only at day, that gives no warmth, that is pinned over one's own heart, but over the course of the novel, he realizes that his status as the "other" frees him (almost like a Camus character) to live.
Worthy of comparison to Imre Kertesz' "Fateless," and Primo Levi's memoirs, this overlooked novel deserves much wider attention. Read it and see why.

4 out of 5 stars The transformation of the day2day into a meaning........2001-09-18

Weil takes his character Josef Rubicek through budding romance, poverty on the outskirts, danger, demeaning treatment, and the daily effort to survive, in Prague during the Holocaust. Rubicek is slow to understand what is happening around him, but eventually realizes the significance of the regulations that get announced daily, the restrictions that are put on his world, and the anguish of those he encounters. It's a very moving book throughout, even when Rubicek is lost in reveries over a romantic liaison which has been ended by the authorities.

        5 out of 5 stars You'll Understand..........1998-11-24

I read 'Night' by Elie Wiesel, and although I sensed the horror of the Holocaust, I didn't actually feel it. Some time later I read 'Life with a Star', and finally felt it, deep inside. This book is an incredible description of a Jew's life outside the camps during the war. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly moving in a subtle way. Read it........1998-10-01

Why this gem has not received the recognition it deserves in the publishing world is impossible to understand. Now available in America; finally. An important testament to the Houlocaust, and, in a larger sense, to humanity... to hope... Sweet & terrible; austere, beautiful, humbling. You will want all of the people you love to read it, too...
