It is always OK to use more than one book for study of a subject but for ECHO Feigenbaums is the bible. The 6th edition is a great book and DVD-ROM. Recommended for all levels of echocardiologists.

Ottos book is a helpful extra book. If you want to stick to one book get Feigenbaum's.

4 out of 5 stars CV Anesthesiologist.......2006-11-04

Well written and easy to understand. Many TTE references are less useful to a beginner in TEE without much TTE experience.

4 out of 5 stars useful but waiting for the new edition.......2000-07-09

I found this book is useful for all the cardiology trainee as it is well written, easy to understood and there is many figures. However, it did not mention the new technology in the field of echocardiography such as the tissue doppler, contrast echo. I hope the next edition will include this and the illustrations will be more colorful.

5 out of 5 stars My #1 cookbook right now.......2007-02-23

I have loved all the recipes so far. Recipes use some of the same ingredients so that you don't have to spend tons of money. Nice information sections of foods to stay away from and why. I feel heart healthier already.

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes and great information!!.......2007-02-06

Let me start by saying that I love this book! I'm not calling it a cookbook because it is so much more than that. It is also an easy to understand nutritional reference.
I do not have high cholesterol, nor does my husband or children, but I stumbled on this book and it quickly grabbed me. Anyone and everyone can benefit from following a heart-healthy diet.
The recipes are fantastic. Some of my family's favorites are: Black Bean Soup, Crab Cakes with tomatillo-avacado sauce, Sesame coated Yellowfin Tuna, Lupita's Lemon Chicken, Chicken Fajitas with homemade guacamole, Buffalo Burgers, and Cashew Chicken. I've made several wonderful vegetable and salad recipes as well. The desserts are delicious AND heart-healthy!
The book also helps me with making food choices when I need to pack processed snacks for my kids or when desperate measures call for fast food. The nutritional information that I gained from this book is invaluable. A MUST READ!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Cholesterol Lowering Books-- No Contest!!.......2006-06-18

This book is set up in an engaging, straight-forward manner and is easily utilized by those with both a lot of background and those with relatively little. It is comprehensive, has a respectful and upbeat tone and is filled with ideas which are very achieveable. The recipes are a bonus -- so far every item tried has been delicious. A real hit at our house.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond your average cookbook. Nice surprise!.......2006-05-31

I loved the way this book was put together. Along with tasty recipes it gives you the nutritional benefits of its ingredients so you get a reason why it's good for you. Not just a cook book but a great reference guide for every day healthy living. A must have in every kitchen. A+ read!

5 out of 5 stars Creative and Tasty Recipes.......2006-05-25

This book has quickly become one of our favorites. Recipes are clearly written and not overly complicated. The nutrition information given for each recipe makes it easy to incorporate into our Weight Watchers routine. Some folks may not be familiar with tomatillos, but you must try the delightful Tomatillo-Avocado sauce (p. 174), which is scrumptious with crab cakes and everything else! We have found that the seasonings are on the mild side - if you enjoy herbs and spices you may want to increase the recommended amounts in the recipes.

But years after the accidental death of their eldest son, the fated divorce, and their gradual transition into very separate lives, Ellie and Tucker are now practically strangers. It's a situation that their two young sons refuse to accept. Convinced that their parents are still meant to be together, the brothers hatch a plan to run away from home into the wilderness. Surely, Ellie and Tucker will come to the rescue-and to their senses.

4 out of 5 stars We love to cry!.......2007-08-08

My suggestion is to plan a whole afternoon for this book, because you won't want to stop once you start. Divorced parents Ellie and Tucker Grant receive an ultimatum from their two runaway sons. Their chilling note reads: make up and get back together, or we're not coming home. Ellie and Tucker are horrified when they realize the boys have taken off into the Oregon wilderness, using skills Tucker has taught them. That's no consolation when they consider the dangers lurking in the wilds. Their eldest son Sammy died in a horrific accident and they don't want to lose their other two beloved boys. Of course Ellie and Tucker follow them, Tucker with his perky, jealous girlfriend, and Ellie with her soft, city-slicker boyfriend. But there is enforced time for Tucker and Ellie to think, to talk, to share, to cry together. All things they didn't do after Sammy died and their marriage broke down. Unfortunately the land isn't kind to them, and all sorts of dangers lie ahead before they can get safely home. Get your tissues and read, read, read. This is another weepy, honest, emotional and romantic Catherine Anderson winner.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful story!!.......2006-08-08

First off I'd like to clear up any confusion that a previous review may have caused. "Always in my heart" is NOT part of the Coulter/Kendrick series!! Hence the reason the main characters are Tucker and Ellie Grant, not Coulter.

Anyway, the story starts off with Ellie Grant missing her boys. They're at the their father's and Ellie is trying to find ways to occupy her time until they get home. She receives a call from Tucker that the boys have run away. And so begins the search for the boys. I won't go in to too much detail, suffice it to say that while finding their children, Ellie and Tucker find their way back to each other as well.

I wasn't entirely sold on Tucker's character. He's supposed to be this big manly man, but he's a little overly sappy for my taste. And I don't entirely buy that they didn't know they still loved each other. Ok sure they'd been through a horrible time, but that's 20 years of love that they just thought had died? Not possible.

Overall I love the story!! I will definitely read it again and again!!

3 out of 5 stars Would have been better if shorter.......2006-02-13

Ellie and Tucker Grant had a marriage made in Heaven. Both are each other's first love, having been together since they were teenagers, and marry soon after. But the devastating loss of their eldest son rips a barrier in their relationship, and in the end, Tucker leaves and they divorce. No longer able to deal with the memories, Ellie sells the family home and moves a few hours away, taking their two sons with her.

Three years later, while the boys are staying with their father, she gets a call from Tucker, and finds that the boys have run away to the mountains of Oregon and will only come back if the parents work out the kinks in their relationship so they can be a family again.

When each parent brings a "significant other," the boys resort to "Parent Trap" antics to get rid of the superfluous adults. Stuck alone, Ellie and Tucker must rely on each other to find their children and bring them back to safety without killing each other in the process. As they spend time together, they finally realize that the lack of communication after Sammy's death took its toll on the whole family, and they are being offered a second chance to be a family again.

While a great premise, the story is very slow, with far too many long passages of dialog between the parents. How many times can they have the same conversation? And the dialog does not ring true, particularly for Tucker - it is so syrupy, that it's hard to reconcile such a macho man making constant poetic declarations of love. It is fraught with emotion that will bring tears to your eyes, but could easily have been trimmed by about 150 pages and been more compact and believable.

3 out of 5 stars Confusion.......2005-12-04

Out of the 6 books from the serious I'd put this one at number 4 out of 6. I loved the attraction and chemistry between Ellie and Tucker. I still do not quite understand why they split instead of working things out but oh well. The MOST confusion part of this serious is I never know when this book took place. It was the third one written in this serious but through out the other books their kids and they are never mentioned together. They have been together forever but what happened between then. This book had to have taken place after "My Sunshine," because in the very end it mentions how Tucker is still single. Something happened in between because in that book Tucker is 34 and his a few years older in this one. The only part I DON'T understand is why their 2 kids never visited grandma and grandpa after their parents split. I DO recommend people to read this and tell me what happened or what I missed. Also recommending the rest of the Coulter/Kendrick series.

2 out of 5 stars Depressing.......2002-09-04

If you want a book that is too long, too tragic, and too depressing .... this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars So good..........2006-11-25

This book is so good.

After being childhood friends and sweethearts, Swift returns fifteen years later. Both Amy and Swift have changed a lot. And yet behind all the layers, they are still the same two people who fell in love, and are still in love. I loved this story. It is first and foremost about the healing power of love. A moving, beautiful, and unforgettable story. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Just Not Convinced. ** Grade: C **.......2005-01-16

I hunted down and purchased COMANCHE HEART, because I am a die-hard Catherine Anderson fan. Usually this truly gifted author can do no wrong, but COMANCHE HEART and its basis just didn't ring true. Swift Antelope, the strong and noble Comanche warrior, promised Amy Masters he would come back for her. Swift did keep his promise, he did return, but fifteen years too late. Time had moved on and these childhood lovers had changed.

Amy Masters is a survivor. As a child, she was brutally kidnapped and violently raped by savage men and yet she survived. Amy Masters is a victim. She was cruelly abused, mentally and physically, by her stepfather and yet she escaped. Yes, Amy Master is both a victim and a survivor, but Amy Masters is hardly normal. She quietly lives in her sheltered life, and hides behind safe daydreams, while she endures inhuman nightmares. She trusts no man, especially when her daydream has turned into a nightmare. Swift Antelope is back!

Anderson again pulls out her ultimate male hero. Swift Antelope is understanding and compassionate; he is tough when required, and a sweetheart when needed. And when it comes to dealing with Amy Masters, being a sweetheart is very much needed. Upon his return, Amy Masters does not fall gratefully at his feet, nor is she glad to see him. Amy has learned to live a free safe life -- alone.

But what brought them together in the first place is still there -- the deep-seated respect, the loyal friendship, the romantic spark. But before the lovers can go on, Amy has much to overcome. Now the reader questions the author's logical. Could Amy EVER get over her past? Could any woman EVER get over THAT past? Yes, Swift Antelope IS tender and gentle and yes he IS the man to fall in love with, but would that EVER be enough?

Catherine Anderson uses a slow, excruciatingly pace to convince her reader that the healing can and does take place, but somewhere along the way, Anderson mission fails. Yes, the idea of reuniting lost lovers has great appeal and both Amy and Swift are very likeable characters, but the core of the story just doesn't sell.

This is the second in Anderson's `Comanche series', but regrettably this entry seems too illogical and too inconceivable to recommend. I truly want to believe in Amy's healing - that a handsome, kind man could rescue her from her haunting horrors, but somehow I can't! Grade: C

5 out of 5 stars A must review novel!.......2001-06-02

When I read the first book to this series Comanche Moon, I fell inlove with Amy and Chase! I knew C.A. had to complete a book about these two wonderful characters that was all their own. I also enjoyed reading about Loretta and Hunter again. Make sure to read the two following books Indigo Blue and Comanche Magic which bring all of these wonderful characters together again! Comanche Hart was just what I needed after reading Camanche Moon. I feel in love with Amy and Chase and I was not disapointed!

5 out of 5 stars A true American Indian "bad boy"! very good!!.......1997-11-03

Amy Masters leaves Texas and travels to Oregon to become a teacher. After having been raped, she is afraid to try to love even though years earlier she pledged herself to Swift Antelope. He has never forgotten and once again this magnificent Comanche warrior finds her. Now, however, he is a nortorious gunslinger with his own problems, as he stands accused of a murder he didn't commit. He vows to make her honor her sacred promise.

Book Description

The question of how children become eager, motivated learners and caring, responsible citizens has perplexed educators around the world. Educating Hearts and Minds, a portrait of Japanese preschool and early elementary education, offers a fresh perspective on these questions. Its thesis--which will surprise many Americans--is that Japanese schools are successful because they meet children's needs for friendship, belonging, and contribution. This book brings to life what actually happens inside Japanese classrooms. In a sharp departure from most previous accounts, this book suggests that Japanese education succeeds because all children--not just the brightest or best-behaved--somehow come to feel like valued members of the school community. Ironically, Japanese teachers credit John Dewey and other progressive Western educators for many of the techniques that make Japanese schools both caring and challenging, but that never caught on in this country. This book brings to Americans the voices of Japanese classroom teachers--voices that are at once deeply consonant with American aspirations and deeply provocative.

4 out of 5 stars Eye opening.......2002-01-06

I'm a non-Japanese jr. & sr. high school teacher in Tokyo. As such, I have a reasonable idea of what goes on in secondary schools here but little knowledge of pre- and elementary schooling. Educating Hearts and Minds gave me a lot of the background knowledge that the Japanese teachers and students take for granted, but it also gave me a new way of looking at discipline and understanding where students and teachers are coming from.

While I found myself feeling skeptical about some of Lewis' observations, in general I found her evidence compelling. Other books dealing with Japanese education (and what it means for America) focus mostly on subject matter teaching, but this books deals more with how teachers order the classroom and maintain discipline. It goes more into teachers' thinking about how to build strong relationships with and between students; mainly by giving much of the responsibility to students and by regularly engaging in group reflection on the day's activities.

Lewis focuses on preschool and early elementary (grades 1 and 2) education. Though little of what she describes will be directly transferable to older students, much of the thinking behind it may.

For anyone teaching in Japan who has not gone through the elementary system this book is a must read.

4 out of 5 stars informative.......2001-11-05

In response to the other review: Actually, the author is an American social psychologist, and she didn't just "sit back and watch" her kids in Japanese public schools. She did in-depth research of the school systems, which involved multiple trips to Japan (her kids were not primarily schooled in Japanese) and a huge amount of observation, study, and interviewing. I would have given this book 5 stars except that I didn't want to appear to be biased in my aunt's favor!

3 out of 5 stars excellent study of how Japanese schools work.......1998-11-12

the author is an American anthropologist, and a Mom. She sent two kids to a Japanese public school, and sat back to watch what happened. I admired the book, and learned from it, because the author seems to have no axe to grind. She also demonstrates that a lot of stereotypes about Japanese schools are wrong. For example, she finds disciplinary rules considerably looser than in American schools, with kids given much more responsibility at earlier ages than in the U.S. Her experience tracks closely with what happened to 2 of my kids in a Japanese public school.

Another Catherine Palmer success! Another member of this quirky family was introduced. The suspese and romance mix was great! This showed the love of God can touch even the biggest skeptic.

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2001-04-08

I was really looking forward to reading this book, having already read the first two and it was a huge let down. The story seemed to drag out and I couldn't really get involved in the story line at all. The first book about Tillie and Graham was much better and was the best book of the whole series. I would still read Catherine Palmer books but, this is one that I would not read again. I would LOVE to read a book about Fiona Thornton though. I want to hear her story. Why she hides herself away etc.

5 out of 5 stars A Touch of Betrayal.......2001-03-24

This was the first Catherine Palmer book I read and I loved it. It is a wonderful story full of adventure and romance. I found myself not wanting to put it down. Ms. Palmer brings the characters to life and you find yourself feeling a part of their world. The message of Christ is developed through the faith of the characters and the story shows how important a witness through example in all aspects of life can bring others to "surrender". If you like suspence, adventure, romance and an element of surprise - I highly recommend this book.

The first edition of The Heart of a Child was widely praised for helping families understand and cope with heart disorders, and many support organizations and websites now recommend this book as "must have" for families. Reflecting changes in treatment and new knowledge about genetics, as well as changes in the system for health care delivery, the text and illustrations have been thoroughly updated with the latest developments in understanding and treating heart problems in children.

The second edition includes:

• New and updated information on the genetics of heart defects, including syndromes associated with heart defects

• Descriptions of new approaches to treatment, including surgery and medication

• Advice on how to deal with managed care

• Information about advances in prenatal care

• Updated list of websites, references, and resources for families

• A note to grandparents

Written by experts in pediatric cardiology from the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and the University of Utah Medical Center, this new edition of The Heart of a Child uses case examples, questions-and-answers, detailed drawings, and careful descriptions to explain the causes of heart disorders, how they are discovered and diagnosed, how they affect children, and how they are treated.

The overriding principle of modern treatment is to restore the child who has a heart problem to the best possible health with the minimum of tests and procedures. The Heart of a Child helps parents understand the challenges, the options, the decisions -- and the many reasons for hope.

5 out of 5 stars Superb book for new cardiac parents.......2002-03-18

Out of all the books in my collection on pediatric cardiac conditions I will have to say that this is the best one out there so far. It has more defects in it and describes them in simple terms then the others books I have seen. This is the first book a new parent should purchase when they find out that their child has a cardiac condition.

4 out of 5 stars A must for parents of children with CHD.......2000-02-25

My husband and I found this very useful when our child was first diagnosed, I was always referring to the list of terms and the pictures.

My only regret is that of another review in that the statistical information is out of date.

5 out of 5 stars Congenital Heart Defects.......1999-12-18

As parents of two children with congenital heart defects, we found this book to be a wonderful resource. It is a must buy for parents who find themselves faced with the prospect of raising a child with a heart condition. This book does a wonderful job of describing the types of heart defects in terms the average person can understand.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but the information seems outdated........1998-12-18

This book was very informative, but we have found that the newer publication released in 1998 was more up to date. "Heart Defects in Children - What Every Parent Should Know" was written by a nurse, and has easier to understand explainations of the defects. It also has a draw in heart section where you can more easily visualize your child's defect. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......1998-08-02

I learned a lot from reading this book when my daughter was in the hospital having her first heart surgery. But the mortality statistics are outdated. The outcomes for children having heart surgery and children with HLHS and Truncus are much more hopeful than they were in 1992.

5 out of 5 stars Another good one!.......2007-03-14

There was so much bitterness in Jessie, I almost put the book down and walked away. I'm so glad I didn't though! Different pace from the first book, but still excellent!!!

5 out of 5 stars As good, if not better than the first!.......2007-01-03

I grew up in Kenya (just as Catherine Palmer did), and so reading this book was like reading about home. I nearly cried in some parts! While this book is not as adventurous and fast-paced as "A Kiss of Adventure", the plot is much more believable and easier to follow. The story of Jessica and Rick is absolutely beautiful, and extremely well-written. Likewise, I was very impressed with the writing in the parts from Spencer's point of view.

This is one of the best Palmer books I've ever read, and I would highly recommend it. You can tell that her knowledge of African ways comes from experience, and not research, and it makes the book so much more enjoyable. A must-read!

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2006-08-30

This book, like the others in this series, is set in Africa. The author packs it full of history and details current to their culture today. The romance is touching and exciting. A beautiful read!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Love Story!.......2005-01-15

I could absolutely not put this book down! It is sooo good. I loved how Catherine Palmer wove the story together gracefully. Nothing dull at all. Nothing inapropriatte in the least which is hard to find any more! The Treasures of the Heart series doesn't have to be read in order at all, and I think this is the best one to start with. You will not be disapointed!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Romancejunkie.......2001-07-12

Catherine Palmer has done it again! Another great tale of romance and suspense in Africa. I especially love the way she shows that the love of God can overcome any obstacle, even unforgiveness.
