Book Description
No one knows exactly what kind of dog Corky is, but if you ask his owner, Mike, the answer is simple: "He's my dog."
Mike and Corky are best friends; they do everything together. In fact they even make a plan. Mike tells Corky that they will always do everything together—forever. It is their Forever Plan.
And it works well. From one year to the next Corky is right there with Mike. Until one day, when Mike comes home from school and Corky isn't there . . . The story of how Mike comes to accept Corky's death forms a simple, poignant portrait of a special friendship that both celebrates the joys of owning a pet and becomes a heartfelt guide for anyone who is coping with the loss of a loved one.
Customer Reviews:
an excellent gift for those grieving the death of a beloved pet.......2007-10-05
The Forever Dog helps children [and the child within us all] feel the painful loss of a beloved pet and move on. Cochran is a masterful wordsmith who makes us chuckle at how such a mangy puppy could become such a beloved and loyal friend to his young owner. And the mother speaks words of profound healing as she gently helps her son understand that his inner pain can be transformed by love into something that he will have forever, just as promised.
This book belongs on the book shelf along with "The Fall of Freddy, the Leaf" [Leo Bussaglia] and "The Dead Bird" [Margaret Wise Brown], to give to someone who is suffering with grief after the death of a loved one.
And veteranarians across the country will be wise to stock many copies of this book for their clients [of all ages] who lose their beloved pets!

Wonderfully Sweet.......2007-08-19
Corky was the best dog ever. Mike got him as a puppy and taught him all he knew. They took walks, Corky slept on Mike's head, and lots of other fun stuff!
One day, Corky got sick and had to go to the veterinarian's clinic. The next morning, Mike's mom had sad news: Corky was too sick for the doctors to save.
Inspired by his own experience, Bill Cochran brings children a gentle story about losing a favorite pet. For many people, this is the first time they must deal with death and grief. As children, it can be hard to understand that a beloved friend isn't going to return, and even more difficult to understand the onslaught of emotions. Cochran's approach takes young readers through the steps without letting on that it's what adults call the "grieving process." All the kids know is that they can identify with how Mike feels about losing Corky, and then see how he comes to accept it.
Hand a box of tissues over with this book when gifting it to a grieving child. Tell them it's perfectly okay to cry, and even a good thing. And if they're not ready, they will be. This is a wonderfully sweet book for such an occasion. Of course, it's a nice story even if there hasn't been a loss, as it can also encourage children to learn compassion toward others who are having a hard time.
I highly recommend THE FOREVER DOG to anyone who has feelings.

Wonderful Book.......2007-08-14
What a wonderful book, perfect for anyone suffering a loss, young or old. When Corky dies Mike is sad and angry. His mother gently reminds him of all the wonderful things he shared with Corky and that the memory of those things will live in his heart forever. Lovely illustrations also.
A very special book for children and adults........2007-08-01
After reading this book several times to my 4-year-old daughter, I am starting to believe this is a children's book for adults. I challenge any current or former pet owner to read this book without shedding a tear. This book is beautifully written and illustrated. It is the rare children's book that touches both kids and adults. Believe me, as a father of two I have read hundreds of children's books, and this one is special. My 4-year-old has been asking about heaven and what happens when people get sick. This book helps answer some of those questions in a very touching, memorable and thoughtful way.
The sweetest and most heartfelt book for anyone suffering a loss of a pet and/or loved one.......2007-07-25
This is the sweetest book for any age group from child to the elderly. When my cat Magic died, this book helped me to remember that she is always there in my heart--that she never has fully gone away. I think that anyone who has suffered loss of either a pet or loved one would benefit from this sweet book.
Book Description
New York Times #1 bestselling author and psychic Sylvia Browne and her son explain for pet owners of all ages what animals experience when their life on earth is over and what is waiting for them when they return home to the other side. Popular questions such as Does my pet miss me? Did he know I loved him? Can he hear me when I talk to him? Can he come back to visit me? and How will I be able to find my pet when I go home? are answered. The story begins when the spirit of Browne's dog, Jolie, leaves her body and goes home to live on the other side. Jolie runs, jumps, and plays with her eternal friends all around the world, devoid of the pain and suffering she was experiencing on earth. This is a comforting account of a pet's journey through one life and on to the next that explains how animals enjoy eternal happiness right alongside the people who love them.

Animals on the Other Side.......2007-08-07
This book is a picture book of which 7\8ths are illustrations and 1\8th is text. It is 14 pages long and took me 5 minutes to read. Had I known what it was I would not have purchased it unless it was on the dollar table. There was a bit of information and I do find Sylvias books about the other side to be deeply interesting however this one was disappointing for the price. Oh well, they got my money.
ANIMALS ON THE OTHER SIDE.......2007-07-17
THIS BOOK GAVE ME THE PEACE OF MIND I NEEDED TO ASSURE ME THATMY BELOVED COMPANION IS HAVING THE TIME OF HIS LIFE.
Very Disappointed.......2007-07-15
I was really looking forward to reading this book, especially being from Sylvia Browne. I was very disappointed. It only took about three minutes to go through this book. It was nothing like what I expected. Sylvia tells the audience that anyone with pets need to get this book, she should tell them it is more for children. Pictures were nice, didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I feel I just threw my money away by buying this book. I should have read the ratings before buying it, I felt since Sylvia wrote it that it had to be worth buying. My cat was very ill and I was looking for something that would help me through her passing. Unfortunately this book wasn't it.
ANIMALS ON THE OTHER SIDE.......2007-07-05
A joy to read. Anyone who is interested in Sylvia Browne (and the "afterlife" will find this delightful.
Disappointed.......2007-05-23
The book was lacking depth. It is more for kids than adults. I was very disappointed.

Book Description
No matter how much you know, no matter how much you think, no matter how much you plot and you connive and you plan, you’re not superior to sex. With these words our most unflaggingly energetic and morally serious novelist launches perhaps his fiercest book. The speaker is David Kepesh, white-haired and over sixty, an eminent cultural critic and star lecturer at a New York college–as well as an articulate propagandist of the sexual revolution. For years he has made a practice of sleeping with adventurous female students while maintaining an aesthete’s critical distance. But now that distance has been annihilated.
The agency of Kepesh’s undoing is Consuela Castillo, the decorous and humblingly beautiful 24-year-old daughter of Cuban exiles. When he becomes involved with her, Kepesh finds himself dragged–helplessly, bitterly, furiously–into the quagmire of sexual jealousy and loss. In chronicling this descent, Philip Roth performs a breathtaking set of variations on the themes of eros and mortality, license and repression, selfishness and sacrifice.
The Dying Animal is a burning coal of a book, filled with intellectual heat and not a little danger.
Customer Reviews:
The Lust of David Kepesh Continued.......2007-10-07
As an avid fan of Philip Roth, the one series I have failed to appreciate is the David Kepesh series. While I enjoyed "The Breast", "The Professor of Desire" and "The Dying Animal" seem to be below the talent of Roth. While sexuality is often a part of Roth's work, Kepesh seems to focus on this facet of life as a person ages. This is not to say these are bad books, they just do not meet the standard of his other works.
"The Dying Animal" sees Kepesh as an aged professor with failed marriage and angry son still in tow. Kepesh now explores his lusts exclusively through his profession, despite being eligible for senior citizen discount in many states. Kepesh's desire focuses squarely on a 24 year old student of Cuban descent named Consuela Castillo. She is more than a source of physical pleasure to him, but a object of perfection. His borderline worship of Consuela takes him to some deviant explorations. But when Consuela contacts him years after their afair with worries of her own mortality, the promiscuous Kepesh must examine his own mortality through the very object he worships.
Initially, one may feel unclean after reading this Kepesh story. However, it address an interesting perspective which few live with a sense of authenticity.
Not a Fan.......2007-08-14
Roth writes well and the book keeps your interest throughout. But I felt the ride wasn't worth it in the end. His story of a man being undone emotionally by a younger woman certainly isn't the best novel on the topic. Personally, I couldn't seem to build sufficient empathy for the main character. Loved the short format though.
Limits of Freedom.......2007-06-01
David Kepesh, the narrator of THE DYING ANIMAL, leaves his wife and young son for a life of "emancipated manhood." Then, for more than 30 years, Kepesh, a public intellectual, has complete freedom in his sex life, moving from woman to woman without commitment--albeit sometimes showing avuncular concern. Here's how alter-ego George O'Hearn and Kepesh advocate for this freedom.
George: "People think that in falling in love they make themselves whole? The Platonic union of souls? I think otherwise. I think you're whole before you begin. And love fractures you."
David: "He who forms a tie is lost. Attachment is my enemy."
In THE DYING ANIMAL, Roth explores what happens to Kepesh after he loses his detachment and, in an intensely physical but still distant fashion, becomes emotionally involved with a beautiful young woman. Eventually, he must choose between survival and detachment or the consequences of responsible love.
This is a fast-moving and fascinating novella.
I devoured The Dying Animal in one sitting.......2007-05-17
Kepesh's fascination and obsession with Consuela's breasts and his pathetic desire for her when she wasn't with him was astounding. How long can one really carry on with an obsession? Apparently, forever. And though he used her for her body, it was the cause of his torment and the standard by which she measured other sexual encounters, showing the strongest aphrodisiac may simply be being desired.
What I found most refreshing is that Roth isn't censored and some of the scenes and lines made me laugh out loud, which I felt was inappropriate at first but is one of the reasons I thoroughly enjoyed reading. He really has a knack for illuminating the inner workings of the human psyche--the things most people try to hide. Roth creates such perfect pieces of art!
Stellar novella.......2007-04-29
Now that Bellow has died, Roth is probably the greatest living American novelist, a position reinforced by his late period spurt that has produced such masterpieces as The Human Stain and American Pastoral. His capacious understanding of American culture, his super stylish wordsmanship and his deep perception of the male psyche raises him to another level. The Dying Animal serves as a sort of coda to his Americana trilogy. The protagonist, David Kepesh, randy libertine professor who abandoned his wife and kids in the 60s for a life of sexual and intellectual freedom has appeared earlier in Roth's work, but he returns here as a sixty something professor of culture who staves of encroching mortality by revitalising himself with sexual affairs with his young female students. He confesses that such affairs don't 'give you a last shot at youth'. Far from it, they actually reinforce the age gap between the 'Dying Animal' - taken from a Yeats poem, and the virility of youth, where time is measured backwards from where you started, rather than in terms of how long you have left.
Still, Roth is the laureate of libido, and knows more than anyone the value of a decent shag to rebuff the Thanatos slide, however fleetingly. Kepesh is a master at this, living an elegant, sophisticated single life in a book lined apartment. A lifestyle that drives his female students crazy. He encounters Consuela, a sultry Cuban girl who comes to realise the sexual power she holds over him by virtue of her stupendous breasts. When she allows Kepesh to lick her menstrual blood, he has been taken in completely. Kepesh tells the story of his affair with this girl, stitching it into context in terms of American sexual relationships as they have developed since the 1960s, with reference to the 'Gutter Girls' - memories of Kepesh's younger days.
The ending, which coincides with the Millennium celebrations, the fireworks around the world staging a mockery of the nuclear fear the world has felt since 1945, hits you like a leaden punch to the stomach. Age, youth, mortality, virility are not as simple and clean cut as surface perceptions suggest.

Read it cried as usual. Great for my daughter. Did not do much for me on the healing process.
A reminder: Always say I LoveYou........2007-09-24
Of the three books I purchased for my two young friends (boys, aged 6 and 10) who was experiencing the loss of their life-time friend, Charlie-the beagle... this was the BEST BOOK of the three.
The pictures are wonderful, the text simple but meaningful, and most of all.. it tells us all that we should love and express that love while our 'friends' are with us. "I'll Always Love You" brought tears to even the adults reading it with the children; also a good lesson that it ok to cry and grief for our four-legged friends even if we are a grownup.
I'd recommend this book for any age child.
nice.......2007-08-30
Sweet story. The best book I've seen so far to handle, in a children's story way, the death of a dog. The kid moves on pretty fast. That was the only discordant part for me, but i think i understand where the author was going with that...we don't need things to help us remember (except for me, i have the worst memory ever). Extremely cute illustrations. I am 36 years old and I cried when I read it. I had a best pal like the kid in the book, who lived with me for 13 years until July 2007. The ham hitting the floor reminded me of my buddy. Other books I found helpful, as an adult, before and after having to choose the time and day to let my best friend go. The authors give some contacts and advice if you are hitting a wall with your grief and how to take care of yourself. The Loss of a PetandGrieving the Death of a Pet, i also saw a journal for remembering that i am planning to buy. My Personal Pet Remembrance Journal.
FAMILY... TEACHER... MUST HAVE.......2007-05-07
Wilhelm, H. (1985). I'll always love you. New York: Scholastic, Inc.
Synopsis: Can pets live forever? This is the story of a young boy and his pet dog, Elfie. Elfie and the boy do everything together. As the boy grows older, Elfie grows older at a much quicker rate. Not a night goes by when the boy tells his best friend, Elfie, how much he loves her. This is without a story for all families that have a pet. Young children learn the importance of loving and caring for their pets.
Evaluation: The concept of dying is a subject many families do not explore until the time comes when it is necessary to discuss. This gentle tale allows readers to ready their minds for the inevitable time when a family pet will pass away. Wilhelm's story provides children with positive, upbeat way to handle a difficult time in life. Young children will find the text to be heart warming and easy to understand. The watercolor illustrations are soft and cheerful which adds to tone of this story. In addition the simple illustrations provide children an uncluttered view into Elfie's world. Having a pet, is an experience many young children can relate to in today's world. Families will find joy in the humor of this story as they watch Elfie and the boy grow up. It is a charming story for any family that has both young children and pets. Wilhelm writes this story in simplistic text that allows young children to read and understand the concept of death and dying. Parents and educators will find that while the text is simple; it is a book that will allow children to open up to the process of grieving. Readers ages 4-10 will find this book appealing. This story is a bright, happy and upbeat book needed in every child's collection.
A Moving Story.......2007-05-04
Elfie and her owner are best friends. They run together, play together, and sleep together. But, as her owner is growing up, Elfie is growing old; and round. She doesn't quite have as much energy as before. Instead of running, she prefers to rest. The family takes Elfie to see the vet, but sadly, the vet says that there's nothing that he can do for Elfie. She's just getting old. The boy now carries Elfie up to bed each night so she can still sleep with him.
However, one morning, Elfie doesn't wake up. She died during the night. Her family grieves and cries, and they bury her in the back yard. The little boy's neighbor offers him one of his new puppies, but he refuses. He wishes to honor Elfie's memory. He does proclaim that when he gets a new pet, he'll always say "I'll always love you".
Our family has a terminally ill dog, and a dear friend loaned us this great book to help our children deal with her impending death. I was moved to tears as I read this book. I could easily relate to what the family in the book was going through. Pets become members of the family just like children do, and dealing with the loss of a pet can be very difficult. This book teaches the reader that, despite the death of the pet, we should remember all of the good times we shared with the pet.
I give this book my highest recommendation. If your family has suffered the loss of a pet, or has a pet that is very sick like mine, then read this fine book. It will help you prepare for the loss, but it will also remind you to remember the good times you shared with your pet.
Book Description
Kim Sheridan grew up with animals as her constant companions. Each time she faced the death of a beloved pet, along with the pain came the same questions, to which she could find no answers. Then, mysterious things began to happen that she couldn’t explain, which led her on an incredible journey to uncover the truth. Along with her own extraordinary experiences, she compiled heartwarming and meaningful true stories of everyday people around the world, and discovered compelling evidence that forever erased her own doubts about an afterlife for animals.
This book provides enormous comfort and reassurance to anyone who has ever cherished a pet, and food for thought for anyone who has ever questioned the place of these beloved creatures in the larger scheme of things, both here on Earth and beyond.

EXCELLANT.......2007-10-03
Loosing a 'friend' is never easy....for some, as with myself....tramatic..it has been two months.....
but with Kim Sheridan.........and the stories.....it has helped, given me hope and some peace.
I DO NOT recommend Sylvia Browne's book 'Spirit of Animals"..it is a picture book with two minutes of reading time......and you do not feel any better for it.
This book gives you hope, peace, and that just maybe you and your friend will meet again on THIS side.............
Animals and the Afterlife.......2007-09-06

Sheridan's writing is informative, compassionate and insightful. I would recommend this book to anyone who is grieving a companion animal.

kim's book has been answered prayers for myself and many family members and friends.i cannot imagine how she was able to pick and choose through so many broken hearts to help us. i shed tears while reading this book both from grief and joy and allowed myself a sense of peace and understanding of transition that i had not learned even after a lifetime of critical care nursing. i appreciate the authors' respect for all life, and the different ways it is celebrated, mourned and honoured throughout the world. i appreciate greatly the biblical referances and the beautiful quotations. even though i miss my family greatly, i rejoice in knowing they will meet me at the rainbow bridge....thankyou kim, bless you and your work...looking forward to the next book....hurry!!!

I love this book even though the subject is difficult. I have sent many copies out to my friends who have lost their beloved animals.
Wonderful Book!.......2007-07-12
This is a great book by a great author! I highly recommend this book to comfort a child who experiences death of a pet or loved one. It's a children's book, but I have also given it to adults and they found it comforting.
keep one extra.......2007-05-30
I have kept an extra copy of this book around - to give away when someone loses a pet. I have taught school and worked in bookstores all my life, and this is one of the best books for anyone who would like comfort. Sensitive and caring.
One of My Favorite Books.......2007-04-26
This book, despite being written for children, is probably the world's most touching, sensitive, and well-written story about the loss of a pet. When a little boy's cat dies, he struggles to come to terms with it and leans on his family and best friend for support. By paying attention to the strory and its characters, a child can learn many important things about life. The characters talk a little bit about what happens physically with death and how nobody really knows what happens after it, but that some people believe in an afterlife and others do not. Also, the characters speak about some of the good things surounding death......how the kitty being buried will help to make the flowers grow (again, it doesn't go into any gorey details with it), for example. The book ends with the little boy listing off ten of the good things which he will always reember about the kitty he lost, leaving the reader with the sense that he will never really be 'lost' at all.
Great book!.......2007-01-11
This book was referred to me by another teacher and ever since, I have read it to kids who are grieving the loss of their pet. It is good book to bring up discussion of the good qualities of the pet as well as the process the family goes through after the death. A very good read!

For the VERY youmg.......2007-09-24
I purchased this for two young friends, boys: 6 and 10
This book was way too immature for the ten year old and even the six year old lost interest in it. I purchased other books on the subject of losing a pet to death that the kids read with more interest.
I would recommend this only for children under five.
Mr Rogers' book, "When a Pet Dies".......2007-09-09
"When a Pet Dies" is a book intended to help children understand and cope with the death of a favorite pet. I believe it does. Well illustrated with to the point photos, it gives the joy of having a pet and the sorrow of having one die. It allows the child to realize that each person is unique, and may have their own way of expressing their grief and their own way of recovering from that grief.
As a near 75 year old man, I bought the book to see how Mr Rogers handled this subject and he did extremely well. I can remember some of the pets that I have had over the years and even the ones that i knew and had 65 years ago still have a place in my being.
"When a pet dies, we can grow to know that the love we shred is still alive in us and always will be.", is the concluding sentence of the book and is a great one because it is always true.
Excellent.......2007-08-13
I purchased this book because both my dogs are getting quite old, and both have had mini-strokes in the past few months. I have two small grandchildren and I know when the time comes they will be upset and confused. They don't have any pets of their own yet so they have no experience of death or loss. This book it very informative and gentle and I believe will help me to help them understand.
A must have for every Vet Practice.......2007-02-11
This is an excellent book to give to famalies that have just lost a pet and have young children in the family. It helps the Mother &/or Father explain to the younger members why the circle of life happens. It helps to explain the pain, the anger and then healing. I think that it also helps the parents too - it builds a foundation of communication and trust. I highly recommend this publication.
I Found This Very Helpful for Myself.......2001-08-07
I'm 22 and I still find comfort in reading this book when I think of lost ones. This book is not just for kids!

Excellent book concerning the dying process........2007-01-17
I found this book to be extremely helpful during the grieving process. It helped me understand death from my dog's point of view. After reading this, I felt connected to my dog and less devastated by her absence. The book has also helped me understand the loss of my human companions, as well.
In peace..........2007-01-10
I found this book very comforting and brought me a lot of peace. I had to put my pet to sleep some months ago and it was a very difficult decision, a lot of mixed feelings. Elizabeth lets us know that our pets prepare us for their death and inform us of how they want to cross over. Made me feel in peace with the decision I took. It gave me a spiritual understanding. Thank you so much for this book!
A MUST read.......2006-02-05
I don't know why there aren't hundreds of reviews on this book, because it's absolutely magic. If you're looking for comfort and evidence, buy it! I am grateful Elizabeth shared her insights with us, readers. As I am in the learning process of becoming an animal communicator myself, I am doing research in reading as much as I can. But first of all I am a grieving person who's animal friend recently died and I am besides myself with grief over this loss. Elizabeth shares her knowledge that all is as it's supposed to be. She enlights, she has such insight, and yet, as a scientifically educated woman, she does not take things for granted. The care-humans (as she calls them) of the pets, deceased or alive, acknowledge her words over and over again. Facts. I read this book of 143 page's in one day, up to late at night. Just couldn't stop. It was one of the most beautiful gifts I received. So just buy it :-)
would you like to see how an animal views death? read this book.......2006-01-31
Judging from the response to this book, not many people buy this book, but a lot of people see the site. That said, I found this book to be quite intriguing. Like "1smileycat", I had to recently put down my favorite pet (in my case, my beloved dog of 10 years). I actually found out about this book from looking at 1smileycat's profile (so thanks :) ) and bought it. Severino's book is a nice read and offers an interesting view of dying, death, and euthanasia- all, as the title suggests, told from an animal's point of view. A good read and definite recommendation for anyone grieving the loss of a loved pet.
Be open minded while reading this book........2005-12-29
I truely enjoyed "The Animals' Viewpoint on Dying, Death, and Euthanasia" by Elizabeth Severino, D.D., D.R.S, animal communicator.
As I write this, it has been 10 days since I had to euthanize my beloved companion of 16-17 years. Spike, my pure white cat with one green eye and one yellow eye, was a true delight to own. We knew each other very well. When one of his back legs no longer worked and the other back leg was not strong enough to do the work for both, I knew it was the beginning of the end.
I had known the end was closer than I wanted it to be for a few months. He was losing weight just as fast as he was eating. He no longer felt the need to groom himself, and he just wasn't himself. The decision to euthanize him was both an easy one and a hard one to make. ~ I had sworn from the beginning of his decline that I would not allow him to suffer, and it was time to make good on that promise. Yet, it was so hard to let go of a beloved companion that kept my every secret, took care of me when I was sick, and did nothing but love me his entire life. That's where this book hit home for me.
Elizabeth Severino does a wonderful job of telling the stories of her experiences with animals in her life, and what she has learned from animals since that helps her to understand those past experiences. One of the main things learned is that there are 3 stages of death, and euthanizing an animal in the 3rd stage is the best. The animal does certain things to let you know it is in the 3rd stage. And the animals themselves are aware of these stages, and prefer euthanasia to a painful existance/death. I believe Spike had just entered that 3rd stage when it 'came to me' that it was his time to go.
This book also offers the idea that animals reincarnate. You should have an open mind to read this book. I don't know what I believe yet about reincarnation, but I'm certainly open to hearing views regarding it - and I enjoyed reading the views expressed in this book.
I recommend this book for anyone who has had to, or feels they may need to, euthanize their pet. It also offers some prayers and methods of healing that I found very interesting. This book wasn't about finding comfort for myself regarding losing my pet, however I did feel a sense of relief after reading it.
1smileycat :-)

A story that will stay emblazoned in your mind for years to come, and warm your heart.......2006-02-09
Mark Andersen leads quite a lonely existence in the Alaskan wilderness, where he lives with his mother and father. Things wouldn't be so lonely if his older brother was still around, but since his death, Mark has been devoid of contact with anyone even close in age to him. Due in large part to the fact that he's the smallest boy at school - at least for his age - and risks injury if he plays with the stronger boys, so he keeps to himself. That is, until he discovers a friend named Ben. Ben isn't your average friend. He's an Alaskan brown bear "brownie," who is larger than life, and frightens anyone who sees him. Except for Mark. Mark knows how gentle Ben is, and quickly befriends him. Mark and Ben discover that they are much more like one another than anyone could possibly know, and forge a strong bond. But when the local townspeople find out about Mark and Ben's relationship, they are determined to destroy it. Even if it means destroying Ben.
Animal stories always have a strong place in my heart, so when I discovered Walt Morey's GENTLE BEN, I knew that I would adore the story. And I did. Much like Sterling North's RASCAL, GENTLE BEN captures the essence of falling in love with a wild animal, and keeping it as a pet, even when the world is against your decision. It's about the special bond that humans and animals hold with one another. Mark is a lovable character, whose small body, but strong mind, make him the ideal friend for Ben. While Ben is a character that will never be forgotten, based solely on the kindness in his heart, and his laugh-out-loud antics. A story that will stay emblazoned in your mind for years to come, and warm your heart.

Bears Of the Wild!!!!.......2006-01-24
This book is touching. The animal is abused but then is loved by Mark. Once he goes out he gets happy. They are afraid he'll turn wild again, but he stayss tame. It was sad when they let him go, but i am happy that he iss not endangered anymore and can eat his fill... This was a great book(RECOMENDED)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good book, questionable premise........2005-12-12
Bears are still wild, even those in captivity.
This is one of those books I call "animal-rights underground book." It has a good story-line, but makes the animal in it too tame. A bear isn't a tame creature. When I see one in the wild, I admire it, but I don't befriend it. This book probably wouldn't happen in real life, but if you want a good read about Alaska or bears for children, this is a good read.
One of the most beautiful!.......2005-05-19
I've just read this book, which is one of the most beautiful I've ever read and I'm very sorry that it isn't available in Slovene language so that our children could read it, too.
It's a book about love between a little boy named Mark and a big brown bear named Ben who became true friends. It's a book about love and care for the wildlife, and also what a man can do if he don't understand or even don't like animals. It's a story which teaches us to listen sometimes to our children and not always only demand from them to act like we think it's normal, because we - grown-up people - can learn a lot from both, from our children and from animals regardless they're their pets or not.
I highly recommend to all of you to read this book. And those who already own one - take it down from the bookshelf and read it again. I think I'll do it in a while, too.
Suspenseful Page-Turner!.......2004-07-01
Gentle Ben is a timeless classic about a boy and his... uh... bear! A wonderful, feel-good page turner that effortlessly sweeps you up into the wonderful world of Alaska with its majestic (and fearsome) Brownie bears! After only a few pages you grow to love Ben and Mark, and the constant threats on Ben's life by game hunters, townsfolk, and others keep you turning pages late into the night!
By the way, I am quite a slow reader. I read this book in 1.5 days.

A comforting look at how a person's legacy endures........2007-08-10
I first heard this story on the PBS show "Reading Rainbow" when my 3 year old niece was watching. I cried and found the story beautiful and encouraging that a person continues to live on in the memories of the people whose lives they touched. It reminded me of my Mom and how she taught me to sing and to make homemade biscuits for Sunday breakfast. These are traditions that I have carried on and taught to my own children. They never knew my Mom, but they can experience a bit of her personality through me. My sister is terminally ill and I am buying copies of this book for her young grandchildren to help them understand that even after she is gone, she will still be with them in all the things she taught them and all the experiences they shared.
Everyone should know about this book.......2006-11-04
My daughter discovered this book shortly after her father (my husband) died. It is a way of explaining the natural death of a mature person in a way that touches both adults and children. I keep several on hand and send them to friends when they lose a parent or spouse. Even my most sophisticated friends have loved receiving it. Beautifully written and illustrated.
help both adults and kids accept death.......2006-09-19
My sister gave this to me when my 19&1/2 years old cat died of breast cancer 5years ago. It moved me so much, made me face the fact that she IS dead, but that she left me many things.
I also read that in a hospital Tokyo, a doctor recommended and read this book to 2 kids whose baby brother was dying-their parents could not explain well to them or accept the fact that he had to go-but all of them were saved by this book. They all understood what was happening, and were able to accept their feelings, cried together, and saw off the baby in love. They said they still read this book often-that it makes them feel less sad about the brother's death and also make them feel connected to him.
I recommend this to anyone who had lost someone-anyone- important.
Thank you, Badger.......2006-09-16
For many years this has been the book we pull off the shelf when someone dies. My daughter, age 23, suggested it today as a gift for a friend who just lost her mother. Everyone experiencing the death of a loved one needs a copy of "Badger" for comfort and tears.
Excellent for young children.......2006-04-01
I read this to my daughter when she was three and found it very helpful. I liked the ambiguous ending because I think anyone can explain the meaning of the "long tunnel" in terms that fit with your own beliefs about what happens at death. The book doesn't handle that for you. As for a relationship with the characters, as one reviewer mentioned, we read some of the other books in the series so that my daughter could see that Badger had other experiences in his life before he became old and sick. I would recommend using other books in the series to allow children to form relationships with the characters outside of this death experience.
For books that deal with other types of death and dying situations, Honey For a Child's Heart offers recommendations with guidelines as to the type of situation depicted and the appropriate ages of the target audience. In our case, this was just what we were looking for. She had a great-grandmother die and then was aware of the death of an aged animal at the zoo, so we wanted to talk about old age and death.
