Complete & accurate.......2004-07-29
This is a great book written by experts who have been involved with the breed for decades. This book was a project by the Dalmatian Club of America (DCA), which has been the breed's AKC national parent club since 1905. No stone was left unturned when covering the true nature and essence of the Dalmatian. The book is a large, attractive volume that covers every topic you can think of related to Dals. The book was written in the late '90s & the DCA staff went to great lenghts to get first-hand scientific research rather than just relaying old, outdated thoughts. Absolutely the best book available for all people who love Dalmatians!
A library treasure and a "must have" to own a dalmation!.......1999-12-13
The book is reasonably comprehensive. The authors have included the dalmation's history, a detail analysis and drawings of judging criteria, and a wonderful section on the animal's nature and traits. Whether you would like to have a friend just to run with, or to own a show dog, this book with it's plentiful color photographs and illustrations is a "must"!
A fabulous, exhaustive, must-have guide to Dalmatians!.......1998-06-24
This book is worth every penny--and much more! The authors have put together an excellent reference on every topic pertaining to Dalmatians: important kennels and breeders organized by era; health peculiarities of the Dalmatian; showing (including tracking, road trials, obedience, agility and conformation); the history of the Dalmatian Club of America; how to choose a puppy (and whether a Dalmatian is right for you)--and all beautifully and lavishly illustrated with color photographs. This is a definitive guide to the breed.

Great book!.......2007-09-25
I felt this book was very helpful in helping me decide on the Rat Terrier breed. It also helped me get prepare for the puppy and gave me ideas for training the puppy.
So far, this is the best book out there to learn about Rat Terriers.......2007-04-20
As a breeder, I own all of the available books, and this is by far the best book for new owners of Rat Terriers. Definitely worth the price it sells for at Amazon.
Everything you need to know about raising Rat Terriers.......2006-10-16
This book covers everything from training to raising and caring for your Rat Terrier. Well written. Is a book for anyone interested in Rat Terriers. Even goes into detail about the types of toys they like to play with.
Buy this book!.......2005-09-15
I bought both this book and the Linda Hibbard book. I could have just purchased this one because I think it is the best of the two. It covers everything! A very comprehensive book for me.I am an experienced mother of 4 kids, but I have never had a dog before,so I needed to know everything! I re-read parts of it all the time to help me be a good mommy to my rat terrier puppy. It has everything from the History of the rat terrier to training and behavior and vaccinations and everyday care. The training section has been particularly helpful.
Great book for people interested in the breed.......2005-08-17
I found this book to be very helpful and nicely detailed. I particularly liked the many good quality photos. Inside the front cover is a two-page picture, with the physical characteristics pointed out and described as from the UKC's breed standard. The standard is also explained in detail in one of the chapters, and in the "Characteristics" chapter it has a good description of the personality traits of Rat Terriers. In the sections about puppies, everyday care, general health care, and senior dogs there is a lot of general information that could be applied to most breeds, but this is common in breed books. The "Health Care of Your Rat Terrier" section has good information about health issues more likely to occur in Rat Terriers, and the "Behavior of Your Rat Terrier" chapter has helpful info about expected behavior and how to deal with behavioral problems that may occur.
Overall, I found this book to be well-written, helpful, and enjoyable to read, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about Rat Terriers.

Deborh Reed.......2007-03-09
This is a wonderful owners manual for anyone wanting to own this wonderful breed of dog. The book is very knowledgeable and clear to understand. Very good tips on being a good Havanese owner.
An interesting read..........2007-01-09
Interesting to read about the breed from the Cuban perspective. The history of the breed, however, seems to be skewed by a lack of free information exchange in Cuba...it doesn't quite mesh with the history as presented in other countries...but, it was an interesting book and worth reading.
a disappointing read.......2005-11-27
I was very diappointed in this book. Having read the reviews I looked forward to receiving it but in fact I thought it no better than generic dog book descriptions of the havanese breed. So many of these books, like 'Puppies for dummies' for instance, just repeat the same old stuff. I really wanted to know more about choosing and raising a havanese puppy, but it was of little use as its main focus seemed to be for potential breeders. There was very little about health problems, temperament or behaviour. In fact the book's layout and presentation looks 20 years old and I have already given my copy away to a thrift shop.
Havanese - A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for your Dog by Guerra.......2005-08-02
Excellent book - especially for the first time owner of a Havanese. I would have liked to see a little more about the eye problems that pertain to this breed. Wonderful photos throughout. We enjoyed the section explaining the history of the breed.
Bravo!.......2004-12-06
This is a comprehensive and very informative book for anyone interested in learning about Havanese dogs. Its caught the attention of so many of my family and friends that I will be giving it out this holiday as gifts. Highly Recommend!! P.s. loved the extra pictures of Havana...

Great Book, Very Informative.......2007-08-14
This book is fantastic, I held off on buying the first book that popped up on a Cairn search because the review mentioned how impersonal it was once they actually read it. I'm very glad I decided to get this book instead. Not only does it include what to generally expect when buying a puppy and raising a dog, the author also supplies his own personal insights into what to expect when buying this particular breed. He follows the life of your new Cairn from puppyhood to seniorhood. This book is fantastic and it's something to keep as a reference throughout the life of your new friend.

Silky Terriers Are WONDERFUL DOGS! Better than a Yorkie!!!.......2007-05-15
WOW! This book is great! Lots of great information on the Silky Breed. We breed our Silky Terrier once a year and This is one of the two Silky Terrier Books that we give to all our New silky Terrier Families.
These dogs are wonderful dogs, not yappy and they have a soft silky coat of HAIR, not fur. If you have alergies this is a great breed of dog. Wife has alergies and we got 3!! Some of our friends have yorkies and after we got our silkies they wished they had found the silky breed first.
I like to call them "A Mans Yorkie"! They are twice the size of a yorkshire terrier, they don't have wirey hair, they are stronger which makes them less suseptible to the medical problems yorkies have. A Silky is an Austrailian Terrier and a Yorkshire Terrier Mix. The breed name came from the LONG, Silky Soft hair the breed has.
Beautiful, wonderful, loving, devoted, loyal, great watch dogs, not yappy!
If you are looking for a toy breed, I think everyone should at least check out this breed before you buy a puppy.

Good book talking about facts, personalties, health issues, discipline, etc of the Silky Terrier. Also contains many pictures.
Advice: good to have before you get your Silky !

Now I'm Really Confused.......2007-06-27
This is a really great book but it is far more difficult to implement his instructions than you might be led to believe. I'll illustrate this point on the topic of the driver.
Tom has several messages with respect to the driver:
Slow swing speed players (90mph) need more loft.
You need a graphite shaft.
You need a shaft that is 43 1/2 inches instead of 45 1/2 inches. Your shaft is only 45 1/2 inches because it is convenient for the manufacturer because a 43 1/2 inch steel shaft and a 45 1/2 inch graphite both have the same (i.e. correct) swing weight. Instead of making two heads the manufacturer only has to make one but they foist an unhittable 45+ inch shaft on their customers.
Well I followed that advice and got a custom made 43 1/2 inch driver with a graphite shaft and 460 cc head. The problem is that you can't get the swingweight right on that combination without huge amounts of lead tape, a steel shaft or a graphite shaft that weighs as much as steel. What's the result? That shorter driver is harder to swing accurately than a long driver because you can't feel the weight of the head. That means that you have a driver that is less accurate, harder to hit and as a bonus it doesn't go as far.
Now I'm sure there is a solution to this problem. According to the person that made my club, the solution is lots of lead tape. Obviously, no one wants to go buy a custom made $300 driver and then put six or eight inches of lead tape on it. Also, that's not what we see the pros do so I know there is a solution. Unfortunately, the book doesn't specify what that solution is.
So after reading this book I ended up with a $300 driver that my teaching professional said was unhittable. A switch to an off-the-rack club quickly fixed the problem and none of the bad things Mr. Wishon alluded to came to pass. If Mr. Wishon had addressed this issue I would have loved the book and loved my custom made driver. Unfortunately, he didn't and it was a $300 mistake and the point of the book is to help you avoid that mistake.
Golf Club specs clearly explained.......2007-05-14
Great book for the golfer who wants to understand the equipment and its impact to swing accuracy and consistency.
The rest of the story.......2007-03-09
Great book for those interested in "what's really important" in purchasing golf clubs. In the book, Tom Wishon reveals the myths, mystery, and the hype surrounding the marketing of golf clubs. He explains the various important aspects of golf clubs, and how to pick the best clubs for your game. He is also quite entertaining in his explanations, making this enjoyable reading as well being very detailed. If I were to buy only one book on golf clubs (I actually have over 30), this would be IT!

Analyzing the legend and lore of golf's most celebrated tournament has become something of a cottage industry of late, but Owen, who displayed his personal golfing affections, frustrations, and obsessions so marvelously in My Usual Game, now goes where his competition hasn't gained access: to the source--via access to Augusta National's archives, records, and membership. The result is a sympathetic, yet still critical and complex portrait of the club and its founder, Clifford Roberts, to whom golf history has not been particularly kind. Indeed, for better--and for worse--Roberts and Augusta remain linked throughout what is essentially a volume that weaves biography with social history played against a sporting canvas. Naturally, finance, ego, Bobby Jones, television, and President Eisenhower figure into the tale, but Eisenhower's not the only leader of the free world to use the club's exclusivity to his benefit; Owen uncovers the delicious bit that Ronald Reagan and George Schultz helped finalize the invasion of Grenada there.
Of course, there is also some great golf. Augusta National would be just another golf club with a fancy pedigree and history of exclusion were it not for the remarkable tournament that it hosts every year. Owen, a graceful writer, tees up plenty of detail and anecdote in a hole-by-hole tour of the track, lined with perspective. Owen explains,
If the Masters seems older than it is, that's largely because the tournament, alone among the majors, is conducted year after year on the same course. Every important shot is played against a backdrop that consists of every other important shot, all the way back to 1934. Every key drive, approach, chip, and putt is footnoted and cross-referenced across decades of championship play. Every swing--good or bad--has a context.
The context that Owen provides makes The Making of the Masters as indispensable as a hot putter. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
The Masters. For any golf fan, the words evoke the immortal greats of the game and their quest for the most prized trophy of all -- the green jacket of Augusta National Golf Club.
But behind the legendary links and timeless traditions is one of the most overlooked and misunderstood figures in the history of the Masters and Augusta National: Clifford Roberts, the club's chairman from its founding in 1931 until shortly before his death in 1977. Roberts' meticulous attention to detail, his firm authoritarian hand, and his refusal to settle -- even for perfection -- helped build the Masters into the tournament it is today, and Augusta National into every golfer's idea of heaven on earth.
David Owen was granted unprecedented access to the archives and records of Augusta National Golf Club. He has produced an honest and affectionate chronicle of the Masters, from its conception to its modern greatness, and a fascinating portrayal of Clifford Roberts -- whose perseverance and pride forged the Augusta National we know today.

Fairly Good-is the "Yin" to Sampson's "Yang".......2006-07-10
Picked this up by chance at the library...and realized I was reading the book that is the Yin to the Yang of the Curt Sampson book The Masters : Golf, Money, and Power in Augusta, Georgia.
Both books look at the same event. Owens focuses only on the beauty spots, while Sampson goes out of his way to find the warts. Owens keeps his story within the walls of the country club, while Sampson traces the development of the golf course and the town and how each impacts the other.
I can't help but feel that Owens book was written as a rebuttal to Sampson's book...and even there it seems to be a surgical strike method rather than a massive refutation type of rebuttal. Example: Sampson quotes specific sums of money in regard to Roberts worth, but is seemingly talking about the sums after factoring inflation...Owens takes these same numbers, uses what appears to be the original number without considering inflation, and then says Sampsons numbers are wrong. Example: Frank Stranahan finishes #2 in the Masters, then is banned the next year for taking multiple practice shots from the same spot (despite warnings). Owens focuses on the action, and says Cliff Roberts action in punishing Stranahan was appropriate. Sampson takes the issue and focuses on the fact that other people did the same thing, but were never punished. Example: Owens examines Roberts marvelous relations with Jones, Eisenhower, and the like, and asks how could a person that had the trust of such great men be the curmudgeon that Sampson and others have made him out to be? Sampson notes how Roberts treated people over whom he had power very poorly but worked hard to get into the good graces of people who could advance his goals.
These two books are as the results of two different men writing about the same pattern in a Rohrschach (sp?) test-they see the same facts and come up with different answers.
So if you want a balanced view of the Masters, don't read either this book or Sampson's book-READ THEM BOTH, then come to your own conclusion.
Outstanding Story About the World's Most Outstanding Golf Tournament........2006-03-16
There is an aura about Augusta National and about the Masters. This book comes as close as words can come to capturing that aura and communicating it to the reader. The Masters is special in and to the world or sport. This book tells you how it came to be and why it continues.
A great read.......2004-07-07
This book is a must read for Masters' fans. The history of the area as well as to golf club itself adds to the enjoyment. I read it in 2000 when we first obtained Practice Round tickets. When we were lucky enough to get tickets again in 2004, I purchased a copy for the reading pleasure of the folks who went along on the trip. All enjoyed the read and it prompted a lot of discussion on the car trip to Augusta.
Is it slanted in favor of the club? Maybe, but how many authors are truly unbiased?
The Fat Rich Guys At Augusta Can Buy Anything.......2003-05-06
Apparently, when Curt Sampson, a highly-regarded and critically acclaimed author, penned his book about The Masters, it ticked off the members there even more so than did Martha Burk. David Owen is a journeyman writer who hacks a column for one of the golf magazines. He was paid by Augusta National to write a rebuttal to Sampson's book. A big deal was made of the fact that Owen was given "exclusive access" to club archives.
All is sweetness, light and goodness among the azaleas and loblolly pines, heaven knows. Owen even goes so far as to negatively mention Sampson's work by name (tacky). If you don't smell the odor of rotten eggs by now, you probably think Hootie Johnson is an intellectual and a feminist at heart. (Hootie, if you had just thrown the letter away, you could have avoided this whole mess! That was flat-out dumb.) However, maybe Mr. Owen will get to write another book with exclusive access to Augusta's archives, regarding their valiant efforts to find a female member. Remember your integrity, David - that means once you're bought, you stay bought. Advice: unless you're a member at Augusta National, don't waste your time and money on this drivel.
Outstaning .....I could not put it down.......2002-02-16
This is not a book about golf. It is the outstanding history of a national treasure it's people and how it almost went bankrupt, and was saved by the dedication and love of Clifford Roberts. The book is of history, business, caring, commitement and amazing dedication. If Clifford Roberts were alive today, people would beg him to give motivational talks, but he would turn down all offers. He was a very private man who influenced the lives U.S. Presidents. Clifford was a skin flint who for no reason would hire the poor friend or relative of a kitchen worker or on hearing that a greens keepers wife was ill, borrowed a members private jet to fly her to his doctor for tratment. He was a complex yet simple man.
WARNING, if you start reading this book do so on a Friday night when you don't have anything planned on the weekend as you won't be able to put it down.

Book Description
"If you've ever stood in the tee box with your driver, and wished you were invisible, I can tell you that I wrote this book for you," Tom Wishon said. "Golf can be a humbling game and the driver is a difficult club to hit much less master. But much of that embarrassment can be traced to drivers that are designed from the factory to be un-hittable in the hands of the average golfer. How many people have spent a small fortune on a driver only to find their tee shots getting worse? With
Search for the Perfect Driver, the average golfer will learn how and why drivers work the way they do, when they don't work and what a golfer can do about it."
Customer Reviews:
You will still be searching for that perfect driver unless..........2007-08-16
You go see a qualified club maker. That is the message being conveyed by the author. So even after reading the book, I don't feel that I'm in total control of making the purchase selection of my driver since the author suggests that having the driver custom-built by the very selct few club maker in the country is the only sure way to go.
While there are some good explanations on the anatomy of the club and how they affect the swing, I didn't find any particularly revealing information. In fact, most of them are rather common knowledge that can readily be found online and in golf publications. It probably could have been written in one or two chapters. In essence, the book recommends that you get high lofted club head with shorter-length shaft.

A one-of-a-kind book especially for golf players.......2007-04-14
Written by golf club designer Tom Wishon with former golf club maker Tom Grundner, The Search for the Perfect Driver is a one-of-a-kind book especially for golf players who wonder why they can spend a small fortune on just the right driver only to see their shots worsen. The average driver length on the PGA tour of 2004-2005 was 44.5 inches, implying that the best golfers in the world felt they couldn't control a 45 or 46-inch club with optimum precision; and yet it is this size of club, unwieldy to most golfers, that is commonly presented to ordinary golfers in stores and shops. This striking detail and other nuances of why and how too many drivers are designed from the factory to be unhittable in the hands of an average golfer in The Search for the Perfect Driver, as are details concerning how to fix driver faults by looking at one's own shots, how to choose the right driver for one's swing, retrofitting, special needs for female, child, senior, and advanced golfers, and much more. Enthusiastically recommended for anyone serious about improving their golf score, as is Winshon's and Grundner's previous guide, "The Search for the Perfect Golf Club."
Must-read for all golfers.......2007-03-26
According to this book, everything the average--and even above-average--golfer understands about choosing the right driver for their swing is wrong! You'll know the author is right--and you'll have the sinking feeling that you've cost yourself a lot of strokes off the tee box because of your driver.
This author is highly credible--he developed the clubmaker's certification testing for both groups that offer such training and certification. He has spent close to thirty years as a master clubmaker, fitter, and designer of clubs.
So what does the average (and above-average) golfer believe about the driver?
1. The right shaft is the most important thing about the perfect driver.
2. Longer shafts will enable you to hit the ball farther.
3. Graphite is better than steel for a driver shaft.
4. Once you get above 10 degrees of loft, you are sacrificing distance.
5. A truly custom-fitted driver will cost more than the retail "name" driver.
I could go on, but if you're any kind of golf nut (as I am) you've heard (and probably believe) at least four of the five statements. And we'll both be wrong for believing them.
In this book Tom demonstrates that while flex is important, most of the flex is dampened because the club is held in our hands--which are soft and not rigid. He explains why a shorter shaft and perhaps a steel shaft would be better suited to a lot of golfers--except the very athletic and those with great eye-hand coordination. He explains why a 350CC head may do as much or more for you than the monster 460CC heads being touted today. And he definitely helps you see how a fitting by an expert clubfitter (who probably does not work at your golf club or the local retail shop) will save you strokes, increase your confidence and enjoyment of the game and also save you money. After all, if you had the perfect driver and perfect set of irons, wedges, and putter--how could advertising induce you to try the latest and greatest--instead of working on your swing?
This book might just be your best investment in your game this year!

Review of the Search for the Perfect Driver.......2007-03-25
I thoroughly enjoyed Search for the Perfect Driver. I particularly liked the "myth busting" regarding that modern drivers performed better or got more distance when the ball struck the clubface toward the top rather than the center. The fact was/is that while one lost distance due to the ball not striking the center of the clubface, one gained distance because the loft where the ball impacted the clubface was more in line with what the golfer needed. The book is filled with such wisdom and information and should be a part of any serious golfer's library.
