Just goes to show...different strokes for..........2007-08-20
- This was a great trilogy! Everything else has been addressed here so I'm just going to add a couple things.
- The only thing that prevented a 5* from me on this trio is the physical action happens way to quick. I like to get to know the characters a bit better before wham bam - then the story.
- One of the things I love best though about Ms. Hunter (aside from her wonderful characters and stories)is she releases a series back to back so you can read and enjoy the whole series in a short period of time vs. waiting a year for the next story. I read way to much to remember a story line a week later, much less, a year!
- Someone commented that this wasn't an "erotic romance" and someone else said it wasn't "steamy." All I can say is thank you Ms. Hunter for NOT slinging the foul language and lewd "erotica" around. This is old fashioned attraction, discovering and working through feelings, and romance! PERIOD! If a reader doesn't get the yummy sensations here - then their tastes run somewhere I don't care to contemplate.
The Wicked Games of A Gentleman.......2007-08-13
Lord Drake Boscale is a rake. Eloise Goodwin is a governess. When Eloise's charge Miss Thalia Thornton and her irresponsible brother Horace disappear on the same night, Drake and Eloise team up to find them. Drake is willing and eager to help Eloise because of his strong and surprising attraction to her.
Drake and Eloise travel a passionate path together but it's riddled with complications, and even danger. Family, disgruntled mistresses and scorned fiancés to name a few. Through it all, Drake is doing something he never thought he'd do. He's falling in love.
A very passionate romance, some danger and a few laughs fill the pages of The Wicked Games of a Gentleman. Drake is very sexy. His mastery over Eloise in the bedroom is delightfully sinful. Eloise is a perfect match for Drake; she matches his passion and sees the good in him right from the start. Jillian Hunter has written a wonderful romance with The Wicked Games of a Gentleman. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Not sure what the problem is with everyone........2007-04-05
I rarely write a review for a book. However, after seeing many of these reviews, I felt the need to respond. I actually really liked this book. It got my attention immediately. The characters were well developed; even the minor characters. The interaction with Drake and his brother Devon were priceless. Some romantic novels can make you 'smile' at their humor. This one actually made me laugh out loud several times. Especially the picture of Heath and the references to it that kept popping up throughout the story. The sex was better than most. It wasn't the same stuff you read in every other book and much 'hotter' than many; which is a plus.... It was my first Jillian Hunter. It will not be my last. I want to read the whole series of this entertaining Boscastle family.
Best of the Boscastles so far.......2007-03-10
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was well paced, had witty dialogue, and believable characters. The whole mistress thing is way too played out in Regency romances, but it is a part of the genre and we love the genre. Anyway, I liked this Boscastle better than all the others. He is the most realistic. I have the next book in the series, but am afraid I won't like it as much, so I haven't read it yet.

Great and Useful Purchase.......2005-02-13
This is a rare book that actually deserves 5 stars.
Most books in this genre (including some in this series) are too superficial to be of any help but Bridges does a great job of filling each page of this little book with helpful, practical hints.
There isn't much in the way of recipes or cooking specifics, but that isn't the idea here. Spend $12 on this and $12 on a cook book and you will be set.
In conclusion, the two best things I can say for this are: 1. I have not had to call my mom for any entertaining, non-cooking questions since I got this book. 2. My wife has looked things up in this book.
Who Says Guys Don't Want to Be Good Hosts?.......2000-12-21
A great, easy read, filled with practical advice. This book takes the "who me??" out of cool entertaining. Highly recommended by the editors of SharpMan.com.
A Gentleman Entertains by John Bridges.......2000-06-22
"A Gentleman Entertains" takes a surprisingly unpretentious look at men entertaining, though the book is by no means without merit for women readers. The practical advice and simple, elegant recipes cover a broad range of entertaining scenarios, from casual cocktail parties at home to dining out, to family reunions. The South is perhaps the only place left where it is still fashionable to be genteel, and Bridges lives up to his Southern upbringing without coming across stuffy. Leaving no stone unturned, the book touches on everything from tipping to starting a charcoal grill to choosing the wine. Though the title suggests a certain level of sophistication, the author is just as quick to advise readers to use paper plates when the situation dictates as he is to recommend the proper way to garnish a cocktail. Bridges writing style is crisp and on the wry side, though he had more room to shine in "Keeping Up," a delightful series of essays on his upbringing in Slapout, Al., as well as witty observations on life and martinis. I would have liked to have seen him cut loose in this book a little more stylistically, but being the proper gentleman that he is, he wrote a respectable book suitable for any coffee table. It is a fine follow up to his previous outing, "How to be a Gentleman." I recommend it to anyone who is looking for the kind of practical advice on entertaining that bears repeating and never goes out of style.

Move over James Bond and make room for Tara Chase!!!.......2007-05-25
Better known for his "Atticus Kodiak" novels, Greg Rucka has started a new series about Tara Chase, a female British Secret Service agent, known as a "Minder" in the trade world of spy craft. Chase is just as tough and sexual as James Bond, but much more realistic with flaws that show up under extreme stress, not mention backstabbing by the British bureaucrats.
The first book in this new series is A Gentleman's Game and has Tara Chase still recovering from lost of an old friend and lover. When a terrorist attack on the London underground train system results in the deaths of over three hundred people, the British government decides to strike back in retaliation at the Moslems who planned this death and destruction. Chase is sent in to Yemen to assassinate the spiritual leader (Dr. Faud) of the Moslem terrorist group who instigated the attack. Faud's meeting with one of the main terrorist leaders, plus a Saudi prince, who funds many of the terrorist attacks. Chase is also working with the Israeli Mossad as a favor and has agreed to take out the two main people, if the opportunity presents itself. The mission proves to be a success from the British point of view, but to complete it, Chase had to kill Dr. Faud and the Saudi prince when they were praying in a Moslem mosque. The outrage from Saudi Arabia is intense and turns into a political embarrassment for the British government. To appease the Saudis, the British agree to turn over Chase to them so that she can be tried and executed. Chase's boss, Paul Crocker, has a bloody fit at what his government is doing and decides to save Chase by ordering her run. This leads her to Israel and the chance to win back the favor of the British government by killing the Moslem terrorist who escaped during the first mission and by taking out a camp of eighty Moslem terrorists. Chase turns to the first person she trusts, Tom Wallace, and together they attempt to do the impossible.
Though I sometimes got confused with all the long Moslem names, A Gentleman's Game had razor-sharp suspense and crackling action that held me to the end with utter fascination. When Chase is thrown to the wolves by her own government, you feel her hurt and sense of betrayal, and then you loudly clap your hands with glee when her boss and the other agents in her department assist her in getting out of London. Tara Chase also proves to be a most interesting character that instantly demands your complete attention. She loves to drink, to have sex, and to be on the high wire of a mission. She reminded me somewhat of Adam Hall's British secret agent, Quiller. I liked her and was rooting for her throughout the book In fact, I enjoyed the novel so much that I immediately started its sequel, Private Wars, right after I finished it and read another hundred pages in just a few short hours. This is a very compelling series that is sure to bring its author, Greg Rucka, more of the fame he so richly deserves. It would also make a great movie with Kate Beckingsale as Tara Chase. For those of you who are "Atticus Kodiak" fans, prepare yourselves for the newest novel in the series, Patriot Acts, which comes out in August. All in all, a splendid read that had me wanting more!
Vivid action scenes with subtle, well-done characterization.......2007-05-17
I've read a couple of "Queen & Country" graphic novels, and I thought the art let them down. That problem's not an issue here. Rucka writes vivid action scenes and peppers the book with subtle, well-done characterization. He knows how to make pages of conversation interesting and does a great job of disguising infodumps so the reader doesn't have to suffer through encyclopedic exposition. He manages to condense the first "Queen & Country" graphic novel into just a few pages. And there are some great plot twists. In all, an excellent read.
I should mention that Rucka's written some excellent comics over the years (particularly White Out). I'll be reevaluating the "Queen & Country" series as well as checking out some of his other work soon.
Excellent.......2007-02-13
Rucka is approaching the quality of the top political/espionage thriller writers like LeCarre, Ambler and Ross Thomas with this novel, which I prefer to his follow-up novel. His view of modern politics and espionage is more realistic than anything Ian Fleming wrote, even though Fleming's writing is way better than the Bond movies (except for the most current one). While still a bit "politically correct"/ moralistic in the underlying sentiment, the novel is showing a very possible reality of modern politics and politicians with excellent knowledge of technical aspects and weaponry as well - without the author boring the reader with too many technical details about weapons.
A Promising New Series from Rucka.......2006-03-06
A Gentleman's Game is the first in what bids to be a successful series of books from Greg Rucka, already well known for his strong Atticus Kodiak series. If you haven't read those, do so soon. It is important to read them in order. Shooting at Midnight is the best of the lot, but the whole lot is pretty compelling.
Anyway, back to A Gentleman's Game. All the blurbs keep drawing parallels to the TV series Alias. A few of the prior reviewers have also noted the similarities between an attack in the book on London's mass transit system and the tragic events of the summer of 2005. It is worth noting that there is a more useful parallal between A Gentleman's Game and another book, Mark Burnell's The Rhytym Section which also features a female assassin working for an ultra-secret British intelligence outfit where the enemy is just as likely to be a co-worker as it is a terorrist.
A Gentleman's Game compares quite favorably to The Rhytym Section, which has gone on to be the foundation of a strong series for Burnell. Rucka's ancillary characters are more finely drawn and deeper nuanced. He gets much further into the psyche of the terrorists than does Burnell, both in terms of their politics and in terms of their emotions.
There is also far more serious discussion of politics and differing threads of thought and belief in modern Islam. Islam is at least as diverse as modern Christianity is, although one would seldom think so to read most of the media in the West. How ironic to encounter a thoughtful discussion of why radical Islam believes there is a "Sixth Pillar of Wisdom" and that it is jihad in a thriler novel! Even more ironic is that an author who has spent time in the comic book genre has a lot to say about Wahhabism and why the House of Saud is at least as dangerous to the West as it is friendly.
As I mentioned earlier, Burnell has made his debut novel about a female assassin into the foundation of a series which has gotten better over time and now garners strong reviews from newspapers like The Economist. Let's hope Rucka does the same with his Tara Chace character.
Could turn into a "favorite author"..........2006-01-30
A blog reader recommended an author to me that he thought I might like. It's Greg Rucka, and I decided to start out with his first Queen & Country novel, A Gentleman's Game. While it wasn't quite a "can't put it down", I do plan on checking out the next installment...
Tara Chace works as a "minder" for the British government. Basically, she's a paid assassin who is employed to "clean up" situations that require the removal of particular individuals. She's very good at what she does, and she's the head minder of the elite group of three. She's sent to the Middle East to eliminate a terrorist figure who is responsible for a series of attacks on British soil. The goal is accomplished, but another person is also taken out as collateral damage. This incidental death enrages the Saudi government, and the only way out for a number of secret spy agencies is to turn over Chace as a sacrificial lamb. Knowing she'd be tried and executed, she goes on the run and attempts to accomplish the impossible... the destruction of an entire terrorist camp with only her and her former lover as the attacking force. If she wins, she lives. If she doesn't, she dies either way...
Overall, A Gentleman's Game is a nice read. Seeing a woman as a paid killer is something you don't normally encounter in a novel, so it made for an interesting premise. The story seemed to move a bit slow in places, but not so much that I wanted to go into skim mode to get to the end. Private Wars is his follow-up novel, and I've already decided that it'll be my next recreational read. I'm hoping that the series is headed in the right direction, because I could end up liking it a lot...

Book Description
A Gentleman's Game is the story of young Timmy Price, whose mastery of the game of golf inspires awe among the adult membership and envy among his peers on the shaded fairways and immaculate greens of exclusive Fox Chase Country Club. But when his self-made father forces Timmy to become a caddy at the club to teach him a lesson in humility, he is thrown into the hardscrabble world of the behind-the-scenes workers who make the game possible. And when his best friend and fellow looper, Jamie Byrne, abruptly stops showing up at the caddy hole, it begins a series of events that will force Timmy to confront the dark secret that hides behind the community of Fox Chase. Soaring and lyrical, A Gentleman's Game is an internationally acclaimed debut about an extraordinary young man and the game he loves that is like no other. "A stunning first novel.... It will make you love language. And it might help you understand what a man wants." -- Melissa Katsoulis, The Times (London) "An emerging writer's master stroke." -- Gary Mullinax, Wilmington News Journal "A Gentleman's Game has tremendous heart.... A book about fathers and sons, and a great one at that." -- Joey Sweeney, Philadelphia Weekly

280 yards, down the middle.......2005-12-03
Coyne's writing is outstanding. The theme of "purity" that he pursues throughout the book is very well-developed as he wrings numerous shades of meaning from that word. The class status differences that he describes so well, the elegant turns of phrase, and the numerous ways that he ties golf to life all indicate a talent for writing that is -- well, quite pure! Although I think it would be somewhat more difficult for a non-golfer to fully appreciate, it nevertheless is a fine story, and I heartily recommend it.
The most notable feature of the book, however, is what Coyne does in the relationship between Timmy and his father. I'm a little surprised that some of the reviewers who had difficulty with the book's story line didn't pick up on this; after all, it's the first ISBN category listed on the book's copyright page. The development of that relationship and all it means is very well-handled, and shows to me that Mr. Coyne has a very clear and insightful understanding of the importance of that dynamic. And to think this is his first book? Kudos, sir - you are indeed a Timmy Price of writing.
Why then not five stars? Two issues. The enormous amount of vulgar language got a bit wearisome for me. OK - call me a prude or call me unable to recognize the need for realism or blind to the fact that Coyne is trying to show the crudity that invisibly demonstrates that the rich and the poor (the "king and the pawn," as he states) are cut from the same bolt of cloth. All of those accusations are probably true. But hey, it's my review! :-)
Second, Mr. Coyne's handling of Timmy's brother Casey was a little unsatisfying. He does use Casey as a very effective foil to contrast Timmy's coming of age and finding a sense of meaning and purpose in his own golf, as opposed to Casey, who finds no meaning in anything. But Casey's character does not get resolved nearly as cleanly as, say, Mr. Price or even Mrs. Price. (Interestingly, the script writer for the movie seemingly came to the same conclusion, as the movie does not even cast a role for Casey.) A tad more closure to that story line would have been welcomed, by this reviewer at least.
Overall, bravo, Mr. Coyne. You hit it between the screws. I'm looking forward to my next round with you!
author hits a hole in one.......2004-07-04
I grew up with a golf course so close to my home that it was not unusual to find balls that had rolled into our yard. I never understood the fascination this game held for the (mostly male) players, but having read this book, I have a better understanding.
This is the first book I can recall reading that deals with any kind of young performer where the parents were not the driving (pardon the pun) force. Instead, the author explores the impact a non-pushy parent, one who leaves the decision to excel up to the child, has on their kid. What may be surprising is that this style can have its drawbacks and inflict its not-always-subtle damage, as well as the more familiar type of coaching.
The book charts several years in a youth's life as he learns about golf, not only from the "gentlemen" he plays with, but from the caddies he works with. As the reviewers mention, he also uncovers the ugly underside of the game, and what happens when dirty little secrets are revealed very publically.
If you're a non-golfer, some of the terminology can be a bit confusing, but the book is worth a read.
chili dipper.......2002-08-30
I read the book in one sitting but can't figure out why. There are too many unanswered questions. Great charactors that don't go anywhere. Nice writing style that doesn't really say anything.
Golf lends itself well to fiction but this book doesn't finish what it starts.
A powerful and promising debut novel.......2002-07-18
Coyne's story is an exploration of human nature and its relationship to golf. We duffers and teeshirt golfers can find inspiration here, for it is not the aloof country-club types who own the soul of the game, but those who show up in the parking lots of public courses before dawn in hopes of getting a tee time. Coyne's writing at times lacks polish, but that seems to only add to its charm - like most of the courses I play, there are bare spots and hardpan, but you play it as it lies.
Don't waste your time.......2002-06-11
Two factors combine to make this a really bad book - a pointless story and an annoying writing style. Save yourself the time and skip it.
