2 out of 5 stars Tired of Gabe.......2007-10-04

I think I have read the last Benni Harper book I ever will. I got so tired of listening to Gabe moan, groan, and generally be a pain in the neck to everyone around him. The mystery plot was too thin and not really a mystery at all. Actually the series might be a whole lot better if Gabe were to disappear. He adds nothing to a book or to Benni's life other than a thorn in her side and mine..

5 out of 5 stars Tumbling Blocks.......2007-08-28

This captivating series is just so fun to read. I look forward to each book as they come out. I hope they never end.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as others in this series........2007-08-20

Benni doesn't need children, she has a husband who won't grow up. He acts like a bratty teenager way too often. Things seem to reconcile a little bit at the end between Gabe and his mother, but we'll have to see in the next book if he can really grow up and start treating Benni like a wife, rather than a doormat.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best in the series.......2007-08-08

I have to say this book disappointed me. We're used to Gabe being an adolescent jerk, but he has grown to have so many rotten characteristics, you have to wonder why a supposedly smart woman like Benni even sticks with him. He's supposed to be some brooding mystery man always on the verge of an emotional breakthrough, but basically he's just a verbally abusive guy who is always dismissive of anything Benni does. And in return, Benni fawns all over him, still mesmerized by how sexy he is. Puh-leeze. In the real world, no smart woman would think his constant nastiness would be remotely sexy. The plot was okay but pretty easy to figure out, and I missed reading more about Dove and Emory. Elvia just came off as a shallow nitwit, which was also disappointing.

2 out of 5 stars Not the greatest.......2007-07-06

What a disappointment! Not only did she not develop any characters in this book, she nearly left out most of the old ones, namely Dove, Isaac, Sam, Elvia, Emory, and even Gabe. These characters all played their steriotypical roles in the backround, never really getting involved with Benni in any meaningful way. Dove and Isaac were wise as usual but hardly around to give any advice or any comfort, Sam was funny and cute and nowhere to be seen unless babysitting the dog, Elvia is apparently now a neurotic pregnant clothes-horse (Please. That's just not in jive with her character), Emory is hardly around except now he's afraid of his neurotic pregnant clothes-horse wife, and Gabe is angry. All these characters put in their cameo appearances, and disappeared right after. Was there really anyone else in the book who could be called a main character besides Benni? Oh wait, yes there was. The puppy, Boo. Give me a break.
Ms. Fowler backed down from any and all emotional moments that could have developed in this book just by having Benni not want to get involved because Dove would tell her not too. I agree with another reviewer who called Benni a doormat. This is getting ridiculous.
On the whole, the "mystery" was way too easy to figure out, and the ending of the book was forced and formulaic. Could Benni fall down and get hurt any more times? Could there be a major "emotional" breakthrough at the very end AGAIN? All in all, the book was pretty bad. I think this is the end for me with this series.

5 out of 5 stars A well written, truthful biography of a powerful Movement.........2005-04-23

I'm so glad I read this book, but am sorry it took me more than a decade to learn that Dr. Abernathy hadn't "sold out" Martin Luther King as was reported in the media when this book was first published. Unfortunately, Dr. Abernathy died before he knew all of black America hadn't turned on him. He told a truthful story of a movement led by strong, yet very "human" men and women. None of us are without our weaknesses, but those weaknesses do not define the total of who we are. Just as Dr. Abernathy's depiction of the weaknesses in himself and in Dr. King don't define the whole tone of this book. I'm glad I read it, and I shared it with my mother who also read it from cover to cover with relish. I appreciate the MLK's and the Ralph David Abernathy's who made such a sacrifice so I could have the rights of every other human being living in the United States.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Powerful Civil Rights Collection of stories.......2004-09-05

I have ever read- Ralph David Abernathy gave a beautiful window into the realities of America's struggles with racism. He and Martin Luther King's unique experiences all over America are scintillating. Having been raised by a military father all over America- a few places and cultures I had observed were in this book. Military housing was integrated 5 years before I was born, so my first experiences of obvious racism were when I was a young adult in civilain environments. I read this when it first came out, for the local TV station in Detroit (WB). At the time this book came out, I was to interview Mr. Abernathy. I started to brief "And the Walls Came Tumbling Down" - I could not put it down until I finished it in 36 hours. He canceled his tour to Detroit, and then died shortly after this book was published. I was very saddened this book did not become embraced more fully by the African American community- as Mr. Abernathy's writing is a powerful diamond on the crown of struggles for goodness. Ralph David Abernathy was truly a holy man for the 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars truth without varnish.......2002-10-01

Ralph Abernathy wrote his life's story warts and all. He also spoke honestly about his dear friend, Doc and his private life. Doc was Martin Luther King Jr. and a lot of people reacted almost violently to the revelations in the book. Abernathy was called a traitor, a Judas and an Uncle Tom. He was also accused of being senile or insane with jealousy of Dr. King's memory. Sadly, with all the name calling people forgot or ignored the fact that it's a good autobiography and a valuable edition to the historical record of the Civil Rights movement.

5 out of 5 stars Not what you've been led to believe.......2001-07-21

When this first came out around 1990, stupid rumors abounded that Dr.King's right-hand-man and surrogate brother had written a sleazy text about Dr. King's sex life. This bunch of hogwash and the cruel responses by people who beleived the hype drove Dr. Abernathy to his grave! This is actually a very good book filled with interesting anecdotes about Dr. Abernathy's years as a soldier in the Civil Rights movement. However, he pulls no punches regarding the infighting that destroyed what was left of the movement after Dr. King's death. This is an important historical memoir by one who was certainly there.

I can't say enough about the Henry and Mudge series, this is just the latest in a superb collection. My son, who is almost 8, has been reading and re-reading these books from about the age of 5. In the beginning, I'd read them to him. Now, he reads them to me and our dog Daphne, that is, until she curls up and falls asleep!

Book Description

“I think Ralph fell in love with the uphillness in me. I could keep up with him on windy passes and minor climbing peaks. But I never stayed with him on the downhill. He was always too fast. He’d wait patiently for me at the bottom of a black diamond run, at the end of a long, winding mountain road, or at the foot of a crag. He was happy when I could get to the bottom of anything. I wasn’t with him the day he had the accident that left him a C-4 quadriplegic. Perhaps it’s the uphillness in me that is keeping me with him now. It’s all uphill from here. No more downhills to carve through gracefully or sail down safely; only up, up, up.” —from the Introduction

Suzy Parker and her husband, Ralph Hager, spent every free moment together biking, skiing, and hiking. All that changed in a split second when a freak cycling accident left Ralph permanently paralyzed below the shoulders. In that moment, Suzy’s old life fell away and her new one began. In Tumbling After, Suzy chronicles her transformation from carefree outdoorswoman to full-time caregiver, and paints a loving portrait of the impromptu, oddball family of concerned neighbors and friends who become her new lifeline. With Jerry, the tender ex-con; Momma Scott, a guardian angel and force of nature in a feather boa; and Harka, the culture-shocked Nepalese, at their side, Suzy and Ralph weather the loss of old friends and learn to embrace a new way of life with hope and a healing dose of the absurd.

This astonishing memoir, devoid of self-pity and told with breathtaking candor and a wry sense of humor, is an inspiring journey that is ultimately a story of survival and second chances—and the unexpected joy and love that can grow out of grief if given the slightest encouragement.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Monotonous and Overrated.......2005-05-20

I disagree with many of the reviews. I found the tone of the book to be somewhat self-pitying and monotonous. Strangely, the only review here I seem to agree with was written below by the wife of another quadiplegic.

The most interesting aspect about this topic, the devastating accident and its immediate aftermath, are glossed over quickly in the first few pages. The remainder of the book is the author going, "Woe is me, look how my life has deteriorated." Don't get me wrong, I don't think I could have handled what she went through, but the book makes the wife more of a victim than the husband.

There is nothing in the book about the husband's initial reaction to waking up and learning he was paralyzed after such an active life; virtually nothing about how he coped with the injury psychologically.

One problem with this book is that the author tells the whole story from the standpoint of me, me, me. I understand how hard her life must have become in the wake of her husband's devastating accident, but I had a real problem with the fact that, according to the book, for the most part, the author parked her formerly active husband in the living room in front of the television like a potted plant and pretty much left him there.

There is very little interaction described between the author and her disabled husband. The author goes on and on about how wonderful her husband's caretakers are, but treats the quadriplegic husband as a two dimensional burden. For example, Ms. Parker will describe in great detail some conversation or interaction she had with one of her husband's attendants, and then she throws in something like, "and we gave Ralph a sleeping pill, emptied his urine bag, put him to bed, and then [the attendant] took me upstairs and made love to me tenderly." I am no prude, and I understand the woman has needs, but I found the whole thing horrifying and insensitive.

She parks the husband in a hospital bed in the living room, and then spends the next few years sharing a bed and sex life upstairs with his 60-year old care attendant. When the husband says he does not want to know how she satisfies herself sexually, she tells him anyway, saying telling him would make HER feel better. Who knows how the poor husband felt. He could hardly complain, since he is helpless without both the wife and the attendant.

She says her old friends and life "dropped away," after the accident, leaving as her only social life, an odd assortment of lovable misfits that took care of her husband. The book gives the impression that, if one is rendered disabled, their only social life is going to be with their ex-con, ex-drug addict hired attendant [who also services the author sexually for years] and assorted neighbors.

I did not find the book uplifing. I found it completely depressing. Usually when I love a book, I am sad when I finish it. This one I was glad to put down. If you want an inspiring book by or about dealing with quadriplegia and its aftermath, I highly recommend "Eleven Seconds" by Travis Roy [the former hockey player]; "Still Me," by Christopher Reeve; or "Miracles Happen" by Brooke and Jean Ellison.

5 out of 5 stars Susan, keep up the good work please........2003-05-25

I am sorry it took me so long to discover this book. I have been a fan of Ms. Parker since I first began reading her columns in the SF Chronicle. This book is one of those you want to read slowly so that it lasts longer but find you can't put it down. Susan has a wonderful knack for untainted honesty as she reports on the universal joys and sorrows of human life. She guides the reader into her world without trying to assign blame or seek justification, a truly refreshing approach in this day and age. Can't wait for the sequel! -Cindy

1 out of 5 stars Another Quad Wife Speaks.......2002-11-19

As the wife of a quadriplegic I was very interested to see what Susan Parker had to say about her life. The description of the devastation, hopelessness and helplessness women feel when they come into this situation was excellent. The potrayal of the feeling of being totally overwhelmed and burned out by the intensity of it all was very real to me.

This is where the excellence of the book ended. It was extremely redundant, telling almost the same story over and over with a slightly different twist. I was quickly bored. It was obvious that it was a collection of short antecdotes written for her newspaper column and not a cohesive book. I was determined to finish it and was only able to tough it out to the end because of the perseverence I've learned from being a Quad Wife.

It was appalling to read that her husband is kept a virtual prisoner in the living room of the house they live in. No adaptations have been made since 1994 to make the rest of the home accessible to him? He has a life of watching TV? What is that all about?

I am also wondering why a woman who says she is intelligent did not seek out the available programs which provide excellent, in home assistance to people with disabilities. Had she taken advantage of such programs, both she and her husband would have much improved lives.

5 out of 5 stars Worldview Changing and Hilarious.......2002-08-21

I picked this book up with about 15 others from the new non-fiction section at my library in preparation vacation reading. I got through my entire selection, but this is the one book that, in a truly meaningful way, became part of my consciousness. I then had the opportunity to choose a book for my bookclub, and it was a no-brainer: Tumbling After. I think the book just speaks to a place in one's heart.

Although at times I wanted to shake Suzy Parker, there was never a time in the book where I couldn't relate in some way to her. Since none of us know what lies ahead in life, we can all imagine ourselves in Suzy Parker's shoes, and I would hope that I would handle any situation of the same magnitude with similar grace, honesty, and humanity. When white, middle class Suzy finds herself in the position of forming a "new family" with folks whose background and lifestyle were formerly not even on her radar, it proves beyond doubt that "love is thicker than blood". She faces up to her biases very bravely, and finds true friendship and camraderie.

Lastly, but just as importantly, I laughed hysterically throughout, which was hard to explain to family members who inquired of the subject matter of such an apparently funny book (quadraplegia? - huh?). But I just loved Suzy Parker's soul.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2002-05-31

I saw Suzy Parker at a book reading in Seattle and she said, "One thing you learn being in the disabled community is that there is always someone worse off than you." And she shows us some of these people--with a clear eye and a sense of humor. What I really love about her story is its truth. There is no self-pity. Even when she says "this [stinks], I wonder if I can make," she just plows ahead.

The story is accessible and never maudlin even when it is grim. And there is plenty of humor and adventure to pull the reader through the tight little chapters.

This story is the real deal--a great read, a compelling story, and a few lessons along the way.

Book Description

Beginning with the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia and culminating in the 1989-1991 revolutions, The Walls Came Tumbling Down is a sweeping, vivid narrative of the gradual collapse of Eastern European communism. Focusing on the decades of unrest that precipitated 1989's tumultuous events, and including information obtained firsthand from personal interviews, Gale Stokes provides a comprehensive history of the various communist regimes and the opposition movements that brought them down, including the "March Days" and Solidarity Movement of Poland, the 1975 Helsinki accords, Czechoslovakia's Charter 77 opposition movement, the autocratic policies of Romania's Nicolae Ceaucescu that brought his people to the point of violent outrage, and every other major event that marked the crumbling of communism. Stokes also examines the first tottering steps in 1990-1991 toward pluralist government, from the resignation of Mikhail Gorbachev to the bloody partitioning of war-torn Yugoslavia. For courses in communist studies or recent history, The Walls Came Tumbling Down is ideal for making clear the most widespread and significant upheaval of the latter twentieth century.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stokes places Communist Bloc in larger European context.......2000-05-09

The value of Stokes's account of Communism in Eastern Europe is twofold. First of all, Stokes provides us with an incredibly detailed account of how and why the Communist Bloc nations abandoned their socialist regimes and ended the Cold War. By exploring the roots of the Cold War in the immediate postwar era, Stokes successfully traces the rise and fall of the nuanced Communist regimes of Eastern Europe.

More importantly, however, Stokes puts the rise and fall of the Communist regimes into the context of twentieth century European history and attempts to tackle the larger question of what we can conclude about Europe as a whole. Viewing Europe as inherently united and indivisible, Stokes pegs Communism as the second major tiding that kept Europe apart (Fascism being the first). Just as Communism seemed to be the most expedient solution for postwar recovery after 1945, by 1989, the bloc countries had realized that they had not found the solution.

This book is a must-read for anyone looking to learn more about the dividing force that was Communism, how and why the regimes revolted against it, and where the newly liberated countries are headed. Although it is not an easy book to get through (an abundance of details makes the book particularly dense), it is well worth the effort. For the most part, the writing style is effective and holds your interest, and the understanding of the Cold War and the meaning of the 20th century in Europe is invaluable.

This book was used as a reference in writing our school districts elementary tumbling unit. The skills are well illustrated and each stunt is clearly defined. For the novice teacher this manual includes lessons which are arranged into 4 parts-warm-up, assessment and review, intro of new skills and closure. For the more experienced teacher the Tumbling Priciples and Skills section offers hints for instruction and a wide variety of ideas.

I got this book thinking that it would help me with my front & back handspring, but the most advanced it got was teaching a cartwheel. It would be an excellent book though for some one younger and less experienced that is jsut starting with tumbling although, but not me.

a psychedelic, philosophical screenplay that proves unique and thought-provoking.

I don't so much mind that it wasn't made into a film as the direct dialogue between Wilson and your own brain frequently evokes the most satisfying images.

3 out of 5 stars A script from the vault.......2002-05-17

Robert Anton Wilson wrote this film script in the late '90's while settling into a new environment (Los Angeles) and recovering from a collapsed film deal. Wilson waited nearly a decade before publishing it. This is not one of Wilson's better works. Wilson's books of philosophy and social criticism shine with brilliance, wit and a clarifying debunking. Praise of these points festoons the covers here, but it is not The Walls Came Tumbling Down that earner that lauding. In the story Michael, an academic scientist, is so barraged with hallucinations and the paranormal that his entire reality is upset for reality only to emerge as a world run by a controlling shadow government with an extraterrestrial treaty. The quick scene changes and short dialogues threaten to unseat even the reader. The Golgotha imagery, folk hallucinogens and parallel universe theorization is a grab bag of alternate reality models that may have been advanced in the late '80's. However, it now reads as predictable, unexciting and not revealing at all. Certainly a necessary addition to the library of the Wilson completists, but a better entry point into his wisdom can be found in Reality is What you can get Away With or Prometheus Rising.

Robert Anton Wilson's screenplay which he attempted to have produced in a film is about the adventures of a scientist who Flashes back on LSD and experiences future memory blocks. Eventually time and space skip from one place to another to an ending I will not reveal here. Entertaining and a well written script, however, I can understand why Hollywood passed the idea. Scattered somewhat, however visually appealling it may be (even to the unconscious). More likely a better read, nonetheless, Wilson is Wilson, so if you enjoy reading Wilson, then this Wilson will be good enough for you.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book.......1999-11-09

Wilson has done it again. This screenplay tells a story of transformation, a parable of overcoming prejudice and illuminating reality. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Fasten your seat belts!!!.......1998-07-28

This book is based on a movie script that has not yet been produced. The style of prose lures the reader deeply, exquisitely into what it is that they don't know.

Book Description

Diane McKinney-Whetstone's lyrical first novel, Tumbling, vividly captures a tightly knit

African-American neighborhood in South Philadelphia during the forties and fifties. Its central

characters, Herbie and Noon, are a loving but unconventional couple whose marriage remains

unconsummated for many years as Noon struggles to repossess her sexuality after a brutal

attack in her past. While she seeks salvation in the church, Herbie gains sexual gratification

in the arms of a bewitching jazz singer named Ethel, a woman who profoundly affects both

Noon's and Herbie's lives when she leaves with them, first, a baby girl and then later, a

five-year-old named Liz.

When a road planned by the city council threatens to break up this South Philadelphia

neighborhood, the community must band together. Unexpectedly, Noon rises up and takes

the lead in the opposition, fighting for all she's worth to keep her family and community together.

Tumbling is a beautiftilly rendered, poignant story about the ties that bind us and the secrets

that keep us apart. With striking lyricism, Diane McKinney-Whetstone keenly guides us through

the world of community, family, and the human heart.

4 out of 5 stars Better catch yourself..........2004-09-20

What a lovely novel. Ms. Whetstone has a gift for letting her characters make the story rather than just her putting pen to paper. Her books seem to write themselves. Her characters are just that; characters. The story of Herbie and Noon is a touching one, but devoid of all romance. And although that was hardly the focus of the novel, it lingers. There are many tragic heroes and sheroes in this novel and the author's ability to tie them all together with one thread to one woman who can help them all is fantastic. Excellent story. Excellent writing.

4 out of 5 stars Hidden Pain.......2004-06-28

Almost everyone has deep, dark secrets that they feel should never see the light of day. For some it may be childhood feelings of insecurity, rejection from a should-be lover, the scars of abuse gone unchecked, or shame beyond measure. But, how often do we take the time to peel those layers of hurt and pain away from our psyches as we attempt to go on about our daily lives?

Not often, and such is the case for the characters of "Tumbling", Diane McKinney Whetstone's brilliant debut novel. "Tumbling" centers around one of our most basic desires as human beings--the desire to love and to be loved in return.

Set in a blue collar community in Philadelphia, ""Tumbling" explores the lives of several ordinary citizens--ordinary meaning that they all have their crosses to bear.

Noon, abused as a child has lost the right to her "womanliness." Herbie, her husband, is the hapless victim caught up in a no-win situation--loving his "good" wife, while seeking fulfillment in the arms of a sexy, nightclub singer named Ethel.

When Herbie comes home late from a jaunt at Club Royale and finds a deserted infant on his steps, he and Noon's lives are given new meaning. They are blessed several years later with a playmate for their only child in the form of another abandoned castaway.

With plenty of love to divert their attention away from themselves, Herbie and Noon are content to raise their children with the very best that they have to offer.

However, their refusal to deal with and resolve past issues comes back to haunt them, and what was once maintained in nice, neat, organized bundles becomes the crumbling plaster that makes the walls come tumbling down.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!.......2004-06-11

I read this book years ago, but never wrote a review. I remember it being so good, different from the same tired storylines that are out now. I would reccomend this to anyone who wants to read a quality book.

5 out of 5 stars Herbie and Noon, I love you!.......2004-05-20

This is one of the most heart-warming stories I have read in a long time. I loved it so much that I can't begin to explain in words the joy I felt peeking in on Herbie and Noon's lives.

This is truly a remarkable read and one can only go out and read the book to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Hearttwarming and Well written!.......2003-03-24

Tumbling was a very quick and good read! I enjoyed it from the first page to the last. There were alot of different issues going on in this story. You have Noon and Herbie who have been married for three years and have never had sex. Because of this Herbie turns to another woman, Ethel who is named the town whore. Every woman's nightmare and every man's fantasy. She has a secret that she has been holding back from Herbie that could change everything.

Herbie comes home one night from the club and finds a small box on his steps with a baby girl inside. They end up adopting this girl and naming her Fannie. Fannie is very smart girl and at the age of 10 she can predict the future. A couple of years later Noon and Fannie are walking home from the store and there is a girl sitting there. Noon ends up adopting this girl. Her name is Liz. But Liz has a problem, when she gets upset she eats plaster and uses the bathrom on herself. I thought this would stop, but at the age of 18 this continued.

I fell in love with all the characters and never wanted the story to end. This was a very good read and highly recommend Tumbling to all book lovers!

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother!.......2006-07-17

This book is extremely dated. It lacks practical "how to" information and technical detail for cabochon cutting. There is more detail for faceting, but not enough to actually do faceting. The language is stilted and verbose. It is written in a "tour guide" style, you would not get the impression that the author had actually done any of this kind of work himself. Don't bother!

This book will appeal to all rock hounds. It provides great lapidary techniques for everyone, from the novice to the expert.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-06-10

I bought this because an online forum told me this was a great book for gymnastics games and I agree. It's great. The whole book is in color and has many pictures showing the games. It goes over every game step by step. The kids love them! I am very impressed with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best Gymnastics Book Ever - Period........2005-03-09

I've coached gymnastics for over ten years and have never come across a resource like this before. This is simply the best gymnastics activity book ever published...period.

The digital photos are crystal clear, and the spiral binding allows me to easily use it on the floor while coaching. Also, since I can't do all the moves myself, the pictures are great for the students to see exactly what I'm asking them to do.

I've bought one for each of my coaches and for less than $30 it was a steal. I would have easily paid double that price, no kidding.

I didn't realize that the author also does workshops, a definite for the near future.

This is a must buy for any coach wishing to get students excited about gymnastics.

Thanks Mr. Miscisin, and thanks from the kids too!

5 out of 5 stars Serious skill development through FUN and games.......2005-03-01

W-O-W! The Big Book of Gymnastics Games is just what I have been looking for. I was getting burned out teaching the same drills over and over and my creativity was really stretched trying coming up with new ideas that would keep my students' attention. The book provides step by step instructions from game benefits, equipment needed, and set-up to rules for play, cautions, modifications, and extra hints for success. The full-color pictures help me get instant understanding and see the games in action. Because it lays flat when opened, sometimes I take the book right out on the floor with me while coaching. My students LOVE the games, (I have a hard time getting them to stop playing), their skill development has excellerated and I feel my own coaching has improved as well. I am thrilled with my purchase and recommend it highly, especially to those who keep trying to swipe mine...get your own, you'll be glad you did!
