Great!.......2007-07-13
Fridays are poetry days in my classroom. Every few weeks, I pull out this book, or Things I Have to Tell You, and read a poem or two. Time and again, boys will approach me after class and ask to borrow the book. These poems say to kids what Whitman, Frost (sorry--you know I love you, Robert) and Tennyson just can't. Kids must speak to kids. These books assure tentative nascent poets that they can do it, too, and they deliver a strong peer message to kids who are struggling. Betsy Franco has done a great thing here.
Honest.......2007-03-03
This book is a genuine, heartfelt, and very honest portrait of teenagers in urban America. There are those, no doubt, who will be offended by its explicit language and subject matter. Nevertheless, explicit language is one of the hallmarks of teenagers grappling with issues of sexuality, drug use, disability, and a myriad of complex social relationships. This book will not expose teenagers to issues with which they are unfamiliar - despite its language, it will not taint innocent minds. Rather, it will model a healthy way (writing poetry) to grapple with the questions most teenagers face as they navigate the difficult path to adulthood.
Appalling.......2006-12-09
The facts about this book are clear from these excerpts from an article in the New York Daily News,Dec. 7, 2006:
"Sixth-graders at a Queens school were getting quite an education - in homosexuality, French kissing and cursing - thanks to three books widely available in classroom libraries. ... Several parents learned of the racy books after overhearing their kids snickering about the sexual themes.
The poem 'I Hate School' in a book called 'You Hear Me?' includes the rhyme, 'F--- this s---, up the a--. I don't think I'll ever pass.' Another poem compares eating an orange to having sex, while several passages repeatedly use vulgar slang for genitalia. Principal Carmen Parache said ... they were ''definitely inappropriate.' ... 'As soon as I saw them, I pulled them and they are no longer in the school'"

"Time somebody told me" has been around a lot longer than the young man who submitted it - Otherwise, love the real, true feelings expressed!
Tender? Deep? Try Tolerance Run Amok.......2004-04-12
(...) YOU HEAR ME: POEMS AND WRITINGS BY TEENAGE BOYS is a collection of teenage angst that will shock most any parent who reads this book. That may come as a surprise to those on the left who promote the acceptance of trash as "tolerance"... but "shocked" is probably being kind as many parents would be flat-out angry at finding their 7th-12th grader in possession of this book.
Let me be honest: This book cannot even be reviewed with the frankness I would like, in using words from the book itself, because Amazon would, rightfully, strike it for being obscene! The editorial reviews above give you a taste.
Teenage boys, for YEARS, have grown up learning right from wrong, but to those who praise this book I suppose that's an oppressive and old-fashioned concept. Books like this - and praise for them - say that it's okay (and right) to use vulgarity, promote pre-marital sex - and more - all in the name of "acceptance of young boys angst." Sorry, but some of us still believe you stand up for what is right and true and good and call trash what it deserves to be called - and what this book is - TRASH that belongs nowhere near a junior high library.
Book Description
At the center of an attic studio littered with paints and portraits stands fifteen-year-old Nina, nude. A canvas separates her from her mother, who perches on a stool, paintbrush in hand. In a desperate attempt to coax her mother out of her emotional seclusion, Nina has offered herself up as a model. The painting, Nina: Adolescence, will mark her mother's triumphant return to the Boston art world and form the centerpiece of a gallery show.
But the exposure makes Nina uneasy, and her father begins to protest with increasing vehemence. The family starts to come apart, sending Nina into a tailspin as she recklessly attempts to free herself from a disintegrating household and the confines of someone else's fame. With the tension reaching a breaking point, Nina finds that the gift she gave to her mother is rapidly becoming a sacrifice and could very well serve to be the cause of her

Magnificent!.......2007-09-14
I picked up this book years ago and just got around to reading it. Wow, is all I can say. Hard to put down. It's really about loss and the consequences to everyone involved; how one catastrophic event can change so many lives on so many levels. I can't say enough about this book. I highly recommend it.
Our bookgroup loved it ........2006-09-20
There are many layers of things to think about in this book as well as great word images. All the characters and events were very believable. Those with daughters the age of Nina (15)thought the author had depicted her very well. But all of us, grandparents as well as those without children, really enjoyed the book, even those who were initially put off by the book starting out with the death of Nina's 4 year old brother when she is 11.
There is a character, an older male, known to the family, who works at gradually seducing Nina. It would be a great book to give to a 15 year old and the parents of teens as a way of safely looking at how the older male manipulates Nina. But there's also a lot to think about regarding the effects of grief (in this case from the loss of another child) and how families do or do not communicate. There's friendship, body image, being good at something ( how Nina feels when she's in ballet class is marvelous).
We had a great discussion!
Loss.......2006-07-23
This is the type of book that would be great for a book club. There is a lot to think about and discuss. I love the idea of exploring adolescence which I have particularly enjoyed in the books "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "Prep". I think the plot was masterfully tied together and the ending seemed fitting for the characters. Hassinger also has a unique way of making the reader understand what leads people to unravel, how selfishness can affect so many people. The beginning of the book begins with an obvious tragic loss, but the ending of it shows how there are these series of small losses in our lives that don't measure up to say, the loss of a child, but affect us in monumental ways.
I loved this book. READ IT!
What a story!!.......2006-05-31
NINA: ADOLESCENCE
author-- Amy Hassinger
published-- 2003
304 pages
I enjoyed this fictional novel; it was a book that I had a hard time setting down while I was engrossed reading. The storyline is rather disturbing because a young fifteen-year-old girl, Nina, is exploited by an artist. This exploitation was the catalyst of near distruction for this naive, sweet child. The total family feels and deals with the shockwaves of this horrible situation that unfolds.
There are some serious, life-changing secrets that are revealed about the artist and her involvement with the man that ends up being a child molesting sexual predator.
The book is well worth reading. It's a look into a world that is dark with very "normal" kind, considerate, friendly predators lurking closer than one would imagine.
Oh, and it's hard to even imagine, but the artist is Nina's mother who is dealing with the death of her young son that drowned in the family's backyard pond.
This is a story with a lot of twists and is quite different than anything that I have read in a very long time.

Stunning and Real.......2005-10-06
I love a good book-but this-this was a GREAT book. Amy Hassinger writes in a way to make the reader feel what Nina is feeling. This is an amazingly real and heartfelt story. I highly reccomend it!!

Customer Reviews:
Ever Girl Should Read This Book.......2002-06-09
This book should be read by anyone not just girls. It teaches
people that if they are molested or abused it is not their fault
especially if they are kids. They didn't do anything wrong. I would recommend this book to anyone who can read.
Nina won't tell..........2002-01-30
Nina won't tell is an excellent book from the series Making Out, all written by Katherine Applegate.
It deals with 2 separate topics that Nina won't talk about:
1.) Her crush on her sister's ex, Ben. He happens to also be her best friend's brother.
2.) Her uncle molesting her when she was much younger.
With the help of her friends, Nina is able to confront her past and come out ten million times stronger. By the end of this book, you will be so proud of Nina, even though she is a fiction character.
Nina Won't Tell..........2001-09-05
Nina Won't Tell is basically 2 stories about Nina.
One is that Nina loves Ben, Claire's old boyfriend. Nina has loved him for the longest time, but she hasn't got the guts to tell him. She's afraid that if she tells Ben, he won't love her back and she'll be embarrassed and alone.
The other is a deeper problem that Nina experienced while staying with her Aunt Elizabeth and Uncle Mark in Minnesota after her mother died. The problem probably wouldn't have come to anyone's attention if her Aunt and Uncle wouldn't have come out to Maine to visit them. Nina lives in fear until the end of the book.
By the end of the book, you'll have laughed, cried, and mentally said, "You go, Nina!" millions of times!
Nina rulz, Bad move Chris.......2001-05-20
Somebody should have told Christopher, if he is going to play the field. You do not do it on a small island wherer everything is accessible by foot. He should have kept that on the mainland. I was so glad when Nina blew the whistle on her slime ball Uncle, and when she finally told Ben how she really felt. I like Nina and Ben.
Wow!.......2000-09-10
Jesus, Nina sure wen't through alot! My blood ran cold when her uncle said they were going to adopt a child! Luckily, Nina spoke up. i would have been afraid to tell. Let's hope what Christopher was doing didn't mean any thing. Anyway, it was great!

6X, the pop-rock band, have just released their first album and they want to do everything, but right now they have nothing lined up. So Brian, their manager, has them go on a shot tour, stopping at little places, to practice being on stage so that they can get a real tour lined up. After that they go to Europe and Asia so they can see their overseas fans.
After giving a free concert, as with Chinese tradition, the people must give them one also. They have a world famous magician there and all the members of 6X must go up to be part of the magic tricks. Everything goes fine through the first three, but then it's Wynn's turn and the magician makes her disappear.
Except he can't get her to reappear.
A/B has finally found the girl of his dreams. Or has he?
Stella falls in love with an up-an-coming rock star. Then one day she shows up late to a practice for the band. What has she been up to?
Kendall is the voice and good girl of the band. Except for when she starts binging and purging. What makes her do things that she knows aren't good for her?
The beginning of the book is a little slow but, as you can probably tell, there is always a lot going on and this book doesn't slow down until the final word of the last page.
This is the sequel to 6X: The Uncensored Confessions, so you might want to read that first if you haven't already!

Ben needs to shape up.......2002-02-17
I understand wants to go through with this alone. However, he allowed Nina to come with him during the test and he even slept with her. So why doesn't he quit being selfish and let his woman be by his side and quit acting like it is pity. I like Ben; but, he is messing up. As for Zoey, well history does repeat itself. These were similar circumstances that lead to her and Jake breaking up. Aaron is a bit manipulative, but that is what Lucas gets for pushing the sex issue with Zoey. If he would have been intelligent enough to back off the other 100 times Zoey said no, this situation would no exist.
I understand that he loves Zoey, in fact I get that. But, no is no, and when she told that she wasn't ready for that he should have left well enough alone.
THIS BOOK WAS GREAT!!!!!.......2001-11-12
I think the Making out Series of books are great!! I hope Ben's surgery goes well so he can see again. I just finished it and I recomend it to everyone who likes a good romance/teen novel. Lara and Jake should definatly stay together and I hope Lara can stop her drinking problem. My least favorite character is Clair. She is sooooo mean. Me and my friends have all started reading the books. Some of them are really hard to find though cause they are out of print!!!
I love this series!.......2000-07-26
OMG these are the best books! I just got done reading Nina Shapes Up and I think it's the best one yet! Nina and Benjamin are my fave island couple, they are so in love (even tho I peeked at a review 4 a later book and it said they break up and now Nina is with LUCAS of all people...I hope she and Ben get back 2ge+her!). NEwayz, the point of this book is that Ben finds out about a blindness reversal surgery project in Boston. He and Nina run away so he can have tests done 2 see if he's eligible. Then something...*surprising* happens between him and Nina. You'll just have 2 read it 2 find out! If you plan 2 read this one start w/ Zoey Fools Around and work your way up...you'll get more out of it that way! C-ya later! - Sara -

Just one of an AMAZING series!!!!!!!!.......1999-06-02
i have read all of the books in this series, most of them in 1 day, and i was really sad when i finished; i wanted to read them all again! My fav character in the series is Nina, cos' she is so funny.
This book is all about how Nina wants to make sure Ben will always love, even if he does get his sight back. Plus the slimy Aaron arrives and causes alot of heartache for Zoey and Lucus. Christopher has a question to ask, but Aisha's not sure how to react!
i recommend these books to any one who wants to laugh, cry, smile and be suprised. After i read the first few books i told some friends about them and now i've got them all addicted! i think the books appeal to teenagers because the series is written in the way we think, using the way we talk.
This book is a roller-coster of a ride, so hold on tight!
NINA SHAPES UP.......1999-04-07
I love all the books in this series. I think that Nina and Ben make a cute couple and I'm glad that he has a chance to get his his sight back. I was surprised at what happens between them. I was also surprised by what happened with Aisha and Christopher. I don't like the Aaron character, though. I think he's ruining things for Lucas and Zoey.

MOTHERS TALK BACK!
In 1999
Ophelia Speaks, Sara Shandler’s collection of writings by and about adolescent girls, became a bestseller. Two years later, Nina Shandler, Ed.D., psychologist by profession and Sara’s mother, invited mothers of adolescent girls from all over the country to talk back, giving them the chance, perhaps for the first time, to speak out about feelings too often considered taboo.
Culled from written submissions and interviews with hundreds of women from all walks of life and from every part of the country, the concerns voiced in
Ophelia’s Mom reflect the universal experience of mothers facing one set of changes while their daughters are facing another. With humor, insight, rage, sadness, jealousy, pride, joy, and, ultimately, optimism, these mothers talk candidly about rejection and separation, feminism versus Girl Power, love and sex, friends, school, drugs and alcohol, divorce, menstruation and menopause, the mother-daughter bond, and much more.
As these mothers reveal how this life passage has reshaped them as well as their children, you’ll realize that you’re not crazy, and you’re certainly not alone in your frustration, confusion, and exhilaration over raising an adolescent daughter.

Is there something in the water at SVJH?
Bethel walked into school one day and everyone was part of a couple. Now all anybody can talk about is who's going with whom and who passed somebody a note and giggle giggle giggle!
It makes her sick.
And happy that she'll never be that way!

Bethel feels like a third wheel between Jess and Renee........2005-04-17
When her older sister,Renee comes home from College,Bethel wants to be fast runner. Renee is the perfect student. Jamell like Bethel, but I think Bethel likes Jamel too. She does feel like a third wheel that come between Renee,Jessica and Jamell.
Bethel the Third Wheel.......2005-02-24
So what if Bethel would rather run than make kissy faces at a boy? So what if everyone else would rather make kissy faces than anything else? That doesn't mean that Bethel has to. Just because everyone else has a boyfriend doesn't mean that she has to drop everything in search of some guy. But the funny thing is, she doesn't have to search, because the guy that she just might like has finished his search...and it's ended with Bethel. But he can only go so far with poems, notes, and explanations before the entire school is looking at the two as some kind of entertainment. After all, "the guy" is a seventh grader.
This was a good book. Not the best I've read, but interesting. It also talked about Jessica and Damon's relationship a little bit, and Salvador's parents coming to visit. That was pretty interesting, since Salvador doesn't get along great with his parents. Overall, I recommend it if you like the SVJH series.
Bethel + Jameel?.......2000-09-03
I like Bethel, and I think she was fine without a boyfriend. It seems like writers today want to pair everyone up! But I do like Jameel, and I think Bethel could have been nicer to him. He did bug her a lot but she was pretty rude when he was super nice to her all the time. I was glad in the end she decided to dance with him at the Beach Blowout. (btw, I know in #18 they are b/f and g/f) Damon and Jessica also have some little misunderstandings- Damon thinks something is wrong with Jessica because she's so out of it all the time (she's just very tired- read the book to find out why) and Jessica thinks that Damon doesn't like her anymore because he hasn't asked her to the blowout. But things work out in the end! This book wasn't my favorite, but it was still okay.
just right!.......2000-07-07
it was pretty much a good book, except that the author kept stressing the fact that Bethel liked Jameel but she didn't want to admit it. I liked the way Damon and Jessica's relationship was mentioned in away that makes fans want to buy the next book.
BADDDDDDDDD!.......2000-01-31
THIS BOOK WAS TOTALLY BORIIIINNNGGG! IT ONLY IS ABOUT BETHEL'S PROBLEM ABOUT ASKING JAMEEL, A 7TH GRADER OUT. I MEAN, WHY CAN'T JAMEEL JUST STOP BUGGING HER AND WRITING HER POEMS AND JUST LAY OFF? AND YOU KKOW WHAT'S REALLY STUPID! JAMEEL ENDS UP NOT BUGGING HER ANYMORE, BETHEL DOESN'T LIKE THAT, AND DANCES WITH JAMEEL! DDDUUUUMMMMBBBB! I'M DISAPOINTED! I WOULD THINK PASCAL COULD DO BETTER!

Ophelia's Mom Speaks -- At Last
"Why do I hurt so much when she pulls away?" "What did I do wrong?" "Are we ever going to be friends again?" "Why is she friends with that sleaze and dating that fungus?" "I know I'm supposed to let her go, but I don't know how and I'm terrified." From the mother of the author of the
bestselling Ophelia Speaks, this is the first book in which mothers of adolescent girls speak out about how the changes in their daughters' lives are prompting cataclysms in their own.
Reviving Ophelia and
Ophelia Speaks explored the painful challenges faced by teen girls. But where's the support for the mothers of those teen girls? In
Ophelia's Mom, Nina Shandler, Ed.D., gives the mothers the chance to speak out about feelings and uncertainties too often considered taboo.

mother of honey "i want to kill a girl named debbie".......2005-06-24
just wondering why i was never contacted to contribute to this book. my daughter, jasmine [pen name HONEY], wrote the powerful entry in "ophelia speaks" about feeling like killing a girl her ex-boyfriend was going with.
i'm dissapointed to say that sara never kept in contact with jasmine, nor did she even send her a copy of her book when it came out.
it might be nice to support the girl authors by getting them together in a chat sometime!
Ophelia's Mom - from one of the contributing authors.......2002-04-09
As a contributing author to Ophelia's Mom I feel this book shares a message of hope, inspiration, and courage. During signings of this book, I have spoken about the personal growth I went through while struggling with with the ups and downs of my daughter. I feel all the moms who contributed showed courage in finding their voice. Many moms did not answer the call to contribute and half of us who did, wrote under assumed names. Personally, I would not have minded going public, however, I chose to protect my daughter's privacy. My daughter was not in a frame of mind to understand this project, therefore, I did not seek her permission to write about her. Yet, I felt immensely compelled to get my message of hope out to the public - so we changed the names. Other moms had their own reasons and I think that's what makes the book so special. As a life coach, I use Ophelia's Mom as a resource for my clients who are struggling with teen issues and who are trying to 'let go' and find themselves.
straight talk.......2001-10-13
I read this book and looked at my seven year old thinking "will this happen to you?
A fascinating, truthful, touching and sometimes painful look at the mother's point of view. I was amazed by the strength of many of these women and grew to see myself as a mother differently. Definitey a good book for a mom like me who realizes that letting go is not as easy as it sounds.
Breaking the silence.......2001-10-12
sorry- the follwoing is a correction: the title of the exhibit at National Museum of Women in the Arts is "Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let Down Your Hair." thru Jan.27. (don't know how to retrieve the original so hope this will do. kmg
Broken Silence.......2001-10-12
"Sometimes, ofttimes, women had to keep silent, have not spoken or named the unspeakable. With their men, they have seen with clear vision, and yet they have not spoken. Wisely, unwisely, they have kept their own counsel and held their tongues.
"With each other, women have also kept silent, and if they have spoken to eachother, their men never knew. All these centuries, the vast underground murmur of women confiding to each other, consoling, grieving, laughing in a separate world, apart from men."
I wrote these words for a juried art exhibit (Collaboration Between Writers and Artists) at The Washington Women's Art Center in 1981. An artist friend had created a quilt of a woman's head. The woman had no mouth.
I also added brief versions of the tales of Procne and Philomel and Maiden Bright-Eye...(both stories address the forbidden territory and dangers of women who speak or put words to the unspeakable...)
Shandler's anthology breaks the silence of women who are mothers in a new way-revealing that when it comes to their experiences with their daughters- women rarely have shared the truth or depth of their feelings with each other --until now.
Anyone who lives near The Women's Museum of the Arts in D.C. should take the time to visit and delight in the exhibit of around the world writers' and artists' versions of the story of Rampunzel.(til late Jan.20002) --"Loving and Letting Go" ..as Shandler says is the task we must all face... as mothers of daughters, there are many pitfalls and pleasures along the way..
