That monstrous villain Gary Soneji is back in Cat & Mouse, the fourth book in James Patterson's series about Alex Cross, a police forensic psychologist, but he's not alone. In seeming support of the premise that you can never have too much of a bad thing, Patterson has thrown a second serial killer into the mix: Mr. Smith, a mysterious killer terrorizing Europe while Soneji practices his own brand of evil along the Eastern Seaboard. With two killers to track, Cross has his hands full--and Patterson has another hit.

Alex Cross is back-and so is a raging and suicidal Gary Soneji. Out of prison and dying from the AIDS virus he contracted there, he will get revenge on Cross before he dies. In addition, we are introduced to a new pair of rivals whose paths cross that of Alex and Soneji. Thomas Augustine Pierce has been chasing his demon, Mr. Smith, since the savage murder of his fiancee. Mr. Smith is a unique monster, with actions toward his victims so insane-so unimaginable-that he is thought of as "not of the earth." Pierce, known in the business as St. Augustine because of his track record for catching killers and his invaluable status to the FBI and Interpol, may even be better than Cross. When things heat up and Alex is in a near-death coma following an attack in his own home, Pierce goes to Washington to help with the investigation. But just as he begins to piece together the mystery of how Gary Soneji could have mortally wounded Cross after he was believed to be dead, he is summoned to Paris with a postcard from Mr. Smith inviting him to a very special killing. The body count is high, the tension the highest, and the two killers on the loose are watching every move their pursuers make. Who is the cat, and who is the mouse? What and where is the final trap? And who survives?

1 out of 5 stars NOT WORTH THE TIME..........2007-04-06

I have read several Patterson books and this one can be summed up in one sentence..."Many words, little value" It's flat, obvious, and down right boring. I guessed the "big surprise" very early on as probably everyone else did. I am currently reading 'Maximun ride:Angel experiment' and even though it's classed as a 'juvenile book' is more intelligent and enjoyable (so far) than this one.

I'm hoping that Alex Cross is gone never to return and Patterson gets back to writing interesting books. I have faith he can do it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Theatre Teachers: This Is What You Need.......2006-11-10

This book is formatted so easily, it took me MUCH less time than I thought it would to prepare a unit on reader's theatre for my class. I used it for my high school theatre class so they wouldn't have to concentrate on large vocabularies, but rather to deliver the story in a simple, easy way. It was a HUGE success of a project and this book made it possible. It tells you how long each story is, what cast you'll need, and what reading level it is!! Yay!!!
The stories themselves are entertaining (even for high school!!!), compelling, and really fun to work with. I am SO grateful I ordered this!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2006-01-11

Aaron Shepard is a generous contributor to the field of Reader's Theatre. This book is no exception. It's well-laid out and chock-full of interesting scripts. I've recommended to several folks interested in RT.

2 out of 5 stars Poor editing, formulaic story.......2007-08-01

I wanted a good Coyle book and was sorely disappointed. I expect better from Harold Coyle, but my nits may not be his fault except for the big long build-up to a quick short battle. It seems this story was thrown together to make a comment on the current Iraq situation (as well as army careerists, liberals, "real" soldiers, etc.) and then was passed to an editor whose first language isn't English. Or worse, run through some inane software program. Wrong words are used (phantom for fathom, winched for winced, etc.) throughout, sentences run on forever and the lack of proper punctuation, especially commas, will have you re-reading sentences to make sense of them. The errors truly detract from what could have been a good summer read.

I can only assume Tor-Forge/Tom Doherty Associates Books tossed this one out quickly for the money. The lack of effort shows in the little quality contained therein.

If you're a fan, add a star. If not, your reading experience may be truly disappointing. I hope Coyle forces the publisher to do better next time.

4 out of 5 stars Coyle does it again.......2007-07-17

As usual, Coyle does a nice job of making you feel like you're there. Lots of twists and turns make this book interesting. Seems to end a bit quick, after building for most of the book...

3 out of 5 stars The Dixon Family Saga Continues.......2007-06-14

I have been following the careers and adventures of Scott and Nathan Dixon from the beginning of this series.

I recomend this books and the earlier books in the series. The plots-in this case dealing with the efforts of a terrorist group to embroil the U.S. in a guerilla conflict and inflict a Tet Offesnive like shock to the Ameircan public- allow Mr. Coyle to provide a painless tutorial on the modern United States Army. The tutorial is badly needed, given the state of world affairs. The techno thriller genre is simply a means to that end.

Please note plots and character develpoment have improved tremendously since the author's 1980's first efforts. I found myself enjoying the lesson and caring about the Dixons.

I recommend this book (and the earlier Dixon/U.S. Army novels).

3 out of 5 stars A promising beginning but a disappointing ending.......2007-06-13

The book's overall plot is a plan by a Muslim terrorist leader to attack and embarrass the local military forces in the Philippines to lure American military forces into a trap as they come to the rescue. The object of the plan is to capture the minds and support of the populace in that country by showing that their local military forces and American forces cannot cope with the terrorist tactics.
The terrorist leader intends to use the tactic that worked in Iraq and Afgahanistan against the American military. He plans to hold his forces back from a direct big battle with the American. And instead he watches every move by the Americans to find their vunerability and to exploit it causing over time the Americans back home to call for a return of their troops.
One of the interesting insights in the book about our situation in Iraq today takes place in a conversation between two American NCOs regarding their mission. One said he saw another Iraq in the making. And that dealing with the local populace can result in one of the three things. If the people are cowered into submission, terrorists will have a great sway over the people. If the people side with and support the terrorists, then the sooner the president declares a victory and pulls the troops out the better because whatever the American military does, the local military will not be able to hold onto the scraps of ground secured by the Americans. Or if people are not for or aganst the Americans, they are playing it safe by being leery of both sides and unwilling to commit themselves to either side and tend to go with whomever they think is the safest for them, just like the Iraqis.
But after this buildup of having the American military being mired in the fight with the terrorists comparable to today's Iraq situation, the author fails to provide a realistic solution to that problem.
He merely conjures up a rather brief direct battle between the terrorists and the Americans in which the latter prevail.
A great deal of this book is about the military politics of promotions and advancement. While some readers may be interested in this, I found it boring. Those readers interested in the author's penchant for describing military action by small groups of soldiers will be disappointed with the little space that is devoted to such action.

5 out of 5 stars The Tin Drum.......2004-11-06

I can't say that it's the kind of book I read without putting down. It took me four years to read it in German, it was a project from which I learned more German, to like Gunther Grass and to look at midgets or short people in a different way. For me they now stand for Oskar, the main character of the book a boy who shatters windows and glasses of his teacher, makes the Nazis dance to the wrong tune, loves nurses and much more. It's a wonderful book. I recently read a list of the 50 favorite books of Germans. This one was number 48 for them. It's close to number one for me. It's a wonderful book -whether it takes you a week or 4 years.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth reading.......2003-10-15

I have read the book in the original language (German)and I couldn't put it down until I was done.
I dont know if it is just as good translated, but I love his choice of words and the pictures he is painting with them.
I mainly read the book, because I am interested in the history of that time, place and the people.
If that is what you are looking for, this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars A great set, great value.......2000-08-23

If you can't check these out at a library (or can't just have these great works for just a few weeks) this trilogy is for you. Tin Drum, in my opinion, is the best of the set, expressing oppression and pain with the best of Grass's stark realism and sardonic wit.

Book Description

The setting is Danzig during World War II. The narrator recalls a boyhood scene in which a black cat pounces on his friend Mahlke’s “mouse”-his prominent Adam’s apple. This incident sets off a wild series of events that ultimately leads to Mahlke’s becoming a national hero. Translated by Ralph Manheim. A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tribute.......2007-07-19

As I began "Cat and Mouse" I was reminded how gifted a writer Gunter Grass is. As he weaved his folksy way around a story about a character from his youth, I realized a sincere tribute was beginning to unfold. Grass's tales of misspent and well-spent youth gives a mixture of laughter and admiration. There is an element of religion that is key to the understanding of the narrator and the main character. We see faith represented with words of ridicule, respect, and devotion. The way the narrator dismisses his own metamorphisis of faith is essentially an impressive way of focussing on the hero of his story: Let me preach another time, this is about Joachim.

It's interesting the way that we only get to know Joachim Mahlke through the narratror's eyes. Whatever secrets the narrator fails to uncover or understand, we miss as well. The way this mildly mysterious yet quite humorous short novel leads us through a part of a young man's life teases us in a way that keeps us interested. The ending may not be what we want but it's what we get and we realize it is why Grass wanted us to hear the story.

3 out of 5 stars School yard hero.......2005-08-24

Joachim Mahlke could easily fall under the "Readers Digest" category of "the most unforgettable person I have ever met." Endowed with a gigantic Adam's Apple (akin to a huge mouse) as well as another unmentionable part, he covers up his throat with a hanging screw driver and with other items that he retrieves from swimming near a sunken barge. Mahlke becomes an expert swimmer and obtains the sobriquet "the Great Mahlke" during his school days. He reinforces this image by later winning the Iron Cross, being instrumental in sinking a number of allied ships during World War II. Yet, he cannot live down an act of thievery perpetrated during his youth and is prevented by his old school principal from speaking at an assembly planned in his honor.

_Cat and Mouse_ is a pleasant enough read about this ordinary extraordinary young man. The book has its moments and Mahlke is somewhat likeable and unquestionably brave. However, I could not help but feel that Gunter Grass's under 200 page allegory is the perfect length for discussing a character who was not engaging enough to sustain my interest in him for very much longer.

5 out of 5 stars World War II boyhood.......2004-04-09

Mahlke was asleep in the grass. The narrator was on a ball team and had a tooth ache. The caretaker's black cat was present and jumped at Mahlke's neck, his Adam's apple. The crematorium between the United Cemeteries and the Engineering School was operating.

Shortly after the outbreak of war Joachim Mahlke turned fourteen. Mahlke was an only child. His father was dead. Mahlke had an English screw driver. He lived in Osterzeile. In front of his house there was ceramic frog. His room was in the attic.

He and the boys raised a phonograph from a sunken Polish vessel, a mine sweeper. The boys built a raft to haul it ashore. The naval battle in the Gulf of Danzig had lasted a month.

A big tall character, a Latvian, turned up in their class in 1941. His first name was Karel. Karel drew Mahlke full face. Mahlke became infatuated with serious music. He whistled tunes dedicated to the virgin. He bullied the boys.

A lieutenant commander spoke at their school. Pilenz, the narrator, dubbed Mahlke the Great Mahlke. Mahlke was expelled and transferred to the Horst Wessel School. He received a special wartime diploma, as did many of the others, and was drafted into the Reich Special Labor Service. Sergeant Mahlke returned to the school to give a talk.

An atmosphere of deprivation and adventure is portrayed given the wartime conditions.

2 out of 5 stars What on Earth is this book talking about??!!.......2003-05-05

Being a member of a local book club, I was given an Arabic print of this book to read. From the first paragraph, I could not comprehend a single word, so I blamed it all on the Arabic translator and bought an English one. Still, no luck. I felt quite stupid for not understanding a Nobel winner book! but after reading reviews here and there, I came to the conclusion that this novel can only be read in its native language, German.

So if you cant read German, I dont suggest that you toture yourself with reading any other version of it.

5 out of 5 stars Why is it I always end up liking books I read in school?.......2001-11-29

Okay, I'll admit freely: "Katz und Maus" was required reading in school, which obviously biased me against it immediately. What's worse, it was German postwar literature, which never fails to be depressing and downbeat. I knew I was in for a greuling read.
And then, suddenly, it wasn't. In fact, I started liking it from the first line, and carried on until the end, which I'd give away if I said wasn't an end, so I'll let you read it yourself.

The story is complicated and non-linear. It is told from a first person narrative, the exact reliability of which is consatantly brought into question, either by the fog of the years or deliberate misconstruction due to feelings of guilt, the narrator never seems too sure about what happened, often offering several different versions of the same story at the same time, and even going so far as to admit his own fictitiousness. The story that serves as a Leitmotiv, as well as title of the book, is the cat that attacked Mahlke's adam's apple, and exactly how it got there.

What I found most striking about the book on first glance was the descriptions of the places and characters that the novella is centered on. At the same time, you have a feeling that it's merely a part of a greater whole. It fits in with the other two books in the so-called Danzig Trilogy seamlessly, yet still sets itself apart.

I have another confession to make: I attend a German high school, and so I read it in German. In my opinion, though what I've read of the excerpts seems like a decent translation, Günter Grass is an author who uses the German language to its full extent, emplying every manner of grammatical and syntactical tricks to underline the story. These, unfotunately, are completely lost in the translation. If you understand German decently, I would strongly encourage you to seek out an original language text.

5 out of 5 stars Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House.......2007-05-20

I am in[..]and I read the Geronimo Stilton book called Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House for my final book report of the year. It was the best book ever! My favorite part about reading this Geronimo Stilton book was that it was very mysterious and had mummies, witches, and ghosts! That made the book even more exciting! I was holding my breath, waiting to see how the book would end. When I was reading, I could hardly wait to turn the page! I just couldn't read quick enough! Geronimo is a fun character, and I love reading about his adventures! Once I finished the book I was sad that it was over. I am so glad that there are many other books in the series! I definitely recommend this book and the rest of the Geronimo Stilton series to anyone reading this review. If you love great mysteries, I'm sure you will enjoy this book as much as I did! I hope my review was helpful and that you have a great time reading this book and other adventures about Geronimo!

Geronimo Stilton:
Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House

He's too fond of his fur! Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House is a spectacular book for anyone who loves fiction. The famous Geronimo Stilton, a mouse by the way, is also known for many other books such as the following: Curse of the Cheese Pyramid, Merry Christmas Geronimo and many others. On this adventure, Geronimo is off to see his great Aunt Sugarfur. On his way home, a storm blows in a Geronimo is stuck in the woods; which were deserted; or so he thought. That's when he discovers Cannycat Castle. Geronimo is a `fraidy mouse, but it's wet and cold outside and Geronimo is not liking the weather, so he decides to try out the castle. He finds the castle is haunted with past residents, including one with only one paw! He calls up his sister Thea, his cousin Trap, and his nephew Benjamin. Together they fight off ghouls, goblins and other creepy things to stay alive. If you like Harry Potter, you'll love this! This book is funny, scary, and action packed all rolled into one. It's number three in his fur-raising adventures, and another one you just don't want to miss.

Boo! Hi,I'm the ghost of Casey Gray.I just read a book called Geronimo Stiltion, Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House. It's a furr-azing book. If you like this book, there are over 20 others!!! I give it two thumbs up.In the back of the book, there is a map of were Geronimo works, what city he lives in, and what island he lives on. Oh No!!! The books are runing away!!! Come on, they're fast.

5 out of 5 stars The mouse is just so loveable!!!.......2005-07-29

It's smart, it's humourous and it's clumpsy most of the time!

Kids of all age will love Geronimo. We have a quicker full set in Hong Kong printed in Chinese and I figure it's a great way to put the 2 language versions side by side to get kids interested in a 2nd / 3rd / 4th language! (Much easier than to get them sit down in front of TV in a foreign tongue.)

Don't I wish that I know Italian as well to apprecitate the original version.

5 out of 5 stars A Scary Adventure for Geronimo!.......2004-05-24

This book is awesome! Geronimo gets lost in the forest and has to spend the night in a haunted house! Geronimo gets really excited when he finds a library full of books, but he gets scared away by a ghost. The scariest part was when the ghost of Duke Slicepaw came out!

I like the way the book is printed with the words being different colors and styles. It has lots of pictures and maps too. It makes it easier for me to read it. I am going to read all fifty titles as they are translated from Italian to English!

5 out of 5 stars excellent first books.......2007-06-27

I bought these books for my grandson who is in Kindergarten. After changing schools mid-year he was slow to grasp reading. I thought these books might be just his level and because the adult reads a summery of the story first he has found books he can read. The confidence these books gave him to continue was amazing. He now has gone one to slightly harder books but he still loves these.

5 out of 5 stars Learning to read is fun!.......2007-01-16

We have purchased other Brand New Readers sets, and have never been disappointed yet. Our kids (5 1/2 year old son and almost 3 year old daughter) love the simple stories and illustrations, and while our son is sounding out the words, his little sister is enthusiastically shouting out the story based on the picture clues and memorization. They both feel a huge sense of accomplishement when they read to us, and we all love the humor used in the stories. Move over Dick and Jane; Brand New Readers make learning how to read fun!

5 out of 5 stars Great fun in the car!.......2007-10-07

My son is just turning 3 and LOVES to listen to Geronimo in the car. The chapters are just the right length for short trips to the supermarket or post office. He quotes the narrator and loves the sound effects. It is entertaining for me too. Trust me, I've heard these 3 stories again and again. I got introduced to the series from a free CD of Curse of the Cheese Pyramid in the kid's meal at Wendy's. (I wish more fast food places would try this as a prize instead of plastic junk--it really gets the kids interested in reading.) He loved it and I've bought the first 2 sets in the series. If it's great for a 3 year old, it would be even better for kindergarten - 3rd graders too. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Geronimo Rocks.......2007-06-13

The Geronimo series books and audio books are all great. The audio books are well-done and do a lovely job of bringing stories to life. I definitely recommend listening to Sitlton for a long car/plane ride rather than the brain-numbing GameBoy. And my husband and I even enjoy listening in and will play the CD in the car rather than letting our kids listen privately on their Ipods. I also find these audio books to be a great price. If you're not familiar with the actual books, give them a try, too. The puns captivate your older reader who may techinically be older than the suggested reading level, and the fun colored fonts will encourage younger readers to push themselves. I am a big believer in reading books both below, at, and above reading levels (to gain confidence, push yourself, reinforce, and enjoy), so the Geronimo books are wonderful to appeal to those from ages 6 to 10 minimum.

5 out of 5 stars A Book Review From a Spiritridge Third Grader.......2007-03-22

Do you want to read an exciting hilarious book? Well then The Curse of the Cheese Pyramid is waiting for you! Geronimo is a great newspaper editor. He has to go to Egypt because a scientist, Albert Spitfur, has a new way to make electricity! Geronimo went to Egypt because he needs to report the new way to make electricity. Geronimo's great grandfather is on a money diet (he is not spending a lot of money). Weird things happen, you will have to read the book! Oh, did I say they talk about cheese a lot in this book? Well they do!

I like how great grandfather William always calls Geronimo and screams at him, "You're spending too much money", when he really is not!

I recommend this book to people who like talking animals, Egypt and lot's of cheese! So read it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the beginning of a beautiful friendship!!.......2001-05-11

In this, the prequel to "Cricket in Times Square", we meet the very young Tucker Mouse and Harry Cat. Well, actually Harry KITTEN in this case. When our story opens, Tucker is wandering the streets of New York, lost, hungry, tired and even NAMELESS! Determined to make something of himself, he struts off down the street searching our first his own name and then his fame and fortune. A sweet shop gives him his name, and a young kitten, equally lost and alone, gives him friendship. Thus is born the friendship that many of us know and love from "Cricket" and Mr. Selden's other books. Together the pair set off to find a place to live. This proves to be a bigger, more complicated task than one might originally think!! The Empire State Building calls to them--why not live in one of the biggest buildings in the whole city? However, when they manage to finally find themselves in the basement where there are little or no people, the find themselves in a vast, cavernous tunnel of white tiles. LOST!! But, by keeping their wits about them, they manage to get back out on to the street. The old piers seem like a good place to live until our heroes are nearly crushed by falling debris from the crumbling buildings. An upscale park is quite beautiful and peaceful, but too ritzy and, well, DULL for our young companions. Deciding that this is still not the place for them, they set off again, this time toward Times Square. There, they finally find the home in the drainpipe readers know and love so well... There's just one problem though, and that's the local gang of rats with thick, New York accents who want to steal all of Tucker's life savings!! "Cricket in Times Square" is still an extremely popular book, though many of the other works by Mr. S. that feature the same characters are much lesser known. Not as many fans of "Cricket" go on to read "Tucker's Countryside" or "Harry Cat's Pet Puppy." I myself have read "The Cricket in Times Square" multiple times, but stumbles across this book, "Tucker Mouse and Harry Cat" rather by accident! I'm very glad I did, though!! Though the writing is a bit weaker than I expected--the story is certainly not as long as the other's in this series, nor are the events or characters fleshed out as much--it's still a very good book and worth reading. I think Mr. Selden intended this book to be for younger audiences than those who normally read "Cricket", for the story is easier to read with less detail. The pen & ink illustrations by Mr. Williams are as familiar and comfortable as those in the other books; I'm especially fond of the picture of Harry and Tucker clinging together in terror at being lost in the corridors of the Empire State Building! Weak or not, younger audience or not, this book is definitely worth reading, and will add so much to the beloved adventures of two beloved characters. Highly recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars A "must read" to learn about Chester Cricket's friends.......1998-10-10

My daughter's girl friend gave her "A Cricket in Times Square," a wonderful adventure of Chester Cricket and his New York City-savvy friends Harry Cat and Tucker Mouse. Once reading that adventure, we had to read all the others in the series, starting with how the cat and mouse met and became great buddies.

Book Description

Mr. Maxwell is one contented cat. He has just been promoted. And what better way to celebrate than by going to his favorite restaurant, the Paw and Claw? He decides to live a little and order the house specialty -- a live mouse. When the headwaiter asks if they should kill the mouse, Mr. Maxwell says that isn't necessary. He knows the Paw and Claw's mice are bred for politeness! But this particular live mouse can't keep quiet -- would Mr. Maxwell like to add a little salt? Or order a glass of wine? Would he mind saying a little prayer before eating? My, what a bold and wordy mouse! Mr. Maxwell hopes the mouse doesn't give him indigestion ... Richly illustrated and full of surprises, Mr. Maxwell's Mouse is a David-and-Goliath story with claws, whiskers and tails.

5 out of 5 stars A twist to a story....or is it twisted? (In a good way).......2007-03-25

What a great book! How Frank and Devin Asch ever thought it up is beyond me. Although it is a cat and a mouse, the "cat" is a middle aged accountant, fussy and prim, celebrating a promotion at work with a special lunch. As his lunch stalls for time, he gets so nervous he guzzles his wine. Not what I'd consider prime kid fare. But it works.

Kids love to see an adult at the mercy of a child--which is how they see it when the mouse torments the cat into letting him go. Yet this is not a mean-spirited book. Both the cat and the mouse are treated with dignity and sympathy even though the story is funny.

The beautiful, almost black-and-white illustrations add to the gravity of this updated trickster tale.

4 out of 5 stars A fun take on an old theme.......2006-09-04

Frank and Devin Asch give new meaning to the term "Cat and mouse" in the delightful _Mr. Maxwell's Mouse_. The punctilious Mr. Maxwell visits his regular restaurant the Paw and Claw to celebrate a promotion. As a special treat, he asks for a fresh mouse for his lunch.

The exchange between diner and dinner is mildly humorous, as each seeking to gain something from the other (the cat his meal, the mouse his escape) under the veneer of polite restaurant conversation. The story itself is interesting and charming in its revisiting of an old theme, the artwork reminiscent of the 1920's. A fun book for younger children or those just entering school.

5 out of 5 stars www.lazyreaders.com book club recommendation for April 2006.......2006-06-27

A funny cat-and-mouse tale, as business cat Mr. Maxwell strays from his normal baked mouse at his favorite restaurant in favor of raw mouse. The entrée requests a prayer before the meal and soon engages Mr. Maxwell in a distracting conversation. Mouse causes a commotion that lands Cat in the hospital, as this book almost reads like a Monty Python skit with its absurd characters, their polite habits and absolute silliness. If you are interested in more cool adult, young adult and children's books under 250 pages, visit www.lazyreaders.com.

5 out of 5 stars Read Aloud Honor Book.......2005-06-04

Mr. Maxwell is a sophisticated, debonair Edwardian businesscat, who goes to his favorite restaurant the Paw and Claw to celebrate his promotion to Vice Manager of Efficiency Control. Instead of ordering his usual baked mouse, he orders raw mouse for his entrèe. The Paw and Claw prides itself on polite and plump mice, but the one served to Mr. Maxwell just can't keep quiet. Would Mr. Maxwell like to add a little salt? Would he like to say a prayer before eating? Would he like a fine glass of wine?

Devin Asch, son of the author, illustrates this macabre, dark comedy with artwork created in Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter. The glossy illustrations alternate between detailed scenes of the restaurant and close-ups of Mr. Maxwell and the mouse. The facial expressions and body language add to the tongue-and-cheek quality of the text. White text against black panels fit the sophisticated tone of the story.

Children found the illustrations to be "elegant" and "distinguished" and appreciated the details, such as the cats' clothing. While sixth graders said that the story might be scary for young children, they found it to be entertaining and funny. A ten-year-old girl laughed at the idea of an animal talking to its food and "beamed from ear to ear" as the book was read. A nine-year-old burst boy out laughing when the mouse maneuvered Mr. Maxwell's tail on to his plate. He also compared the story to "Tom and Jerry" cartoons.

4 out of 5 stars More Interesting Than Entertaining.......2005-02-25

In early 20th century England, tradition, formality, and imperialism are still prized possessions of the British Empire. And so it is with Mr. Maxwell. Every day, at precisely 12:45 pm, he walks amongst the other cats to the dignified "Paw and Claw" dining establishment for his midday lunch of baked mouse. He is a somewhat stuffy cat, full of secret ambition, and both pride and power burst through his 3-piece herringbone suit. Today, he is particularly proud because of his promotion to Vice Manager of Efficiency Control, and it is partly for this reason that he decides to order a fresh mouse and to kill it himself.

The live mouse, served on a single slice of rye bread with a garnish of parsley, arrives relaxed and talkative. When the mouse sneezes due to the salt and pepper showering him, Mr. Maxwell says "Gesundheit," and the mouse thanks him. "Mr. Maxwell appreciated the compliment, but said nothing more. His mother had always advised him not to fraternize with the food."

Mr. Maxwell is up against a formidable mouse, however, who elicits his pity and admiration, even as the cat's fork holds him down and his knife is perilously close to cutting. The mouse assures him that he doesn't want to escape, but his 5-hankie prayer, his advice on which wine would go best with mouse, and his empathy for Maxwell's difficulty in going for the kill earn the cat's trust. This is the cat's eventual undoing, as the mouse tricks him, frees the other mice, and sends Maxwell to the hospital with a bloody tail.

Asch sets a Gothic tone early, with the cold green décor and the grayish-green pallor of the cats and the dark greys of the formal club. The computer-generated graphics also lend a cold, odd cast to the illustrations. On one gruesome page, Asch depicts the mouse almost facing us, with a fork and knife millimeters away from their fatal work. While the ending is wild and liberating, we see some blood (his own) flowing down Maxwell's tail as he lets out a painful scream. This quirky book, full of gloomy, threatening imagery, expressionist close-ups and long shots, the specter of mousicide, and class (or, at least, inter-species) warfare (complete with sharp knife and let blood) is for older elementary school children and up. While creative, I found the book more interesting than entertaining.
