Explained my own feelings better than I could.......2007-09-12
Shortly after my 42 year-old wife of 21 years passed away, my sister sent a copy of this book to me. At first, I wasn't sure how a book could possibly help me through the wide range of emotions and pain that I was going through; however, as I began to read the book, I realized that it was a huge help for me as I struggled through my grief.
I learned that the emotions I was feeling were "normal" for those who grieve. This fact was something that gave me peace in knowing others had also gone through these feelings and survived (indeed, had even grown to be a stronger person because of them).
As a new single Dad to three children, I also gained some insights into what they must also be feeling as my kids traveled through their own dark period of intense grief. This helped me to understand the mood swings my children went through, in addition to my own. I have been able to be more understanding of the actions and reactions my children have had since their Mom died.
I can't say enough good things about this very easy to read, yet highly insightful and invaluable aid! I have shared the book with others, and they were also grateful for the comfort and wisdom shared within its pages...
Comprehensive.......2006-09-11
Grief, whether parents, spouse, friend, is devastating and complicated. Finding "the right" comfort for the bereaved is challenging. However, this book is extremely helpful, no matter what circumstances. When my mother died, I was overwhelmed with fatigue, and unbelievable loss. A friend sent me this book. A chapter a day is manageable...and so I began my "journey." Some days I read and meditated on several chapters. At the end of 4 months, one day I woke up, feeling refreshed, and NOT FATIGUED any more! It was mind-boggling! Amazing. No one had prepared me for the physical stages of grief. This book does more than soothe the soul; it gives shared experiences in order to understand the deep process of grieving.
I have given dozens (!) of copies of this book, to friends & family who are suffering and grieving!!
Not recommended for those who are not devout Christians. .......2006-04-13
I have read several books on grief since my husband died four months ago at the age of 42. While this book has a few good comforting vignettes to share, the references to God in each chapter were not helpful. After the story of each person's grief, each chapter ends with a paragraph or two describing how to get through grief is to "trust in God". I found a much better book to be "Chicken Soup for the Grieving Soul".
this book is God-sent!.......2006-03-17
finally, i found TRUE company through this book! my husband was killed in iraq last year and i really had a difficult time recovering; some days i'm ok, some days i'm not.. but this book (among the 6 Grief books i bought) is by far the best one.. highly recommended!! it puts into words the things i couldn't seem to express fully because of the heaviness i feel.. it's only a page or two a day of reading, and it tackles almost all topics involved in the grieving process in a Christian perspective (there's no other guaranteed way than the Christian-perspective way, believe me). i don't think i still need the other books i bought, this one's enough to keep me going.. Stay blessed.
comforting and realistic.......2005-07-20
Grief can be so confusing. So many people say that they know exactly how we feel, and yet we feel so alone in it. So many people offer their advice - everything from "express your anger" to "expect to be depressed for a whole year" to "just get over it already". Coupled with the many emotions we feel, it's no wonder we feel like we're going crazy! The quick little passages in this book are just short enough in this time when we have trouble concentrating. This little book is the only one that helped my daughter realize that everything she felt was normal, that she wasn't losing her mind. It gives simple and helpful advice.

The image of drowned circus cages in the trash-filled canals of Venice, California, both haunts and illuminates famed fantasy and science fiction author Ray Bradbury's rare venture into the mystery field. Like filmmaker Federico Fellini, Bradbury is fascinated by the seedy splendor of cheap carnivals and circuses--"a long time before, in the early Twenties, these cages had probably rolled by like bright summer storms with animals prowling them, lions opening their mouths to exhale hot meat breaths. Teams of white horses had dragged their pomp through Venice and across the fields."
But now it's the early 1950s, and foggy, shabby Venice is the last stop on the circus train for scores of old silent-movie stars and young writers trying to keep their art and their bodies alive. As Bradbury's autobiographical hero, a young writer, pounds out his short stories, someone is killing off the older denizens of the tacky city. The writer joins forces with a quirky detective called Elmo Crumley and a faded screen star to investigates the deaths. Their search begins and ends in one of those iconic, waterlogged cages.
Blending hard-boiled detective fiction with beautiful descriptions of this strange Californian town, Death Is a Lonely Business is well worth investigating. --Dick Adler
Book Description
Ray Bradbury, the undisputed Dean of American storytelling, dips his accomplished pen into the cryptic inkwell of noir and creates a stylish and slightly fantastical tale of mayhem and murder set among the shadows and the murky canals of Venice, California, in the early 1950s.
Toiling away amid the looming palm trees and decaying bungalows, a struggling young writer (who bears a resemblance to the author) spins fantastic stories from his fertile imagination upon his clacking typewriter. Trying not to miss his girlfriend (away studying in Mexico), the nameless writer steadily crafts his literary effort--until strange things begin happening around him.
Starting with a series of peculiar phone calls, the writer then finds clumps of seaweed on his doorstep. But as the incidents escalate, his friends fall victim to a series of mysterious "accidents"--some of them fatal. Aided by Elmo Crumley, a savvy, street-smart detective, and a reclusive actress of yesteryear with an intense hunger for life, the wordsmith sets out to find the connection between the bizarre events, and in doing so, uncovers the truth about his own creative abilities.
Customer Reviews:
Take the time to read this book!.......2006-03-04
Ray Bradbury is noted for his science fiction books, which I have never read, but I was recommended this book (his rare effort to write in a genre that he loved - the mystery novel. This is a remarkable story of love and friendship and it also has a true psycopathic killer in it. The book is peopled with wonderful eccentric characters and its setting is a dying 1950's California seaside town. This is an evocative and eerie novel, and it will keep you turning the pages until you finish. If Ray Bradbury can write like this, perhaps I should read some of his better known stories. I have seldom read a book that held so many truly wonderful characters.
Loved it.......2004-02-01
I have to admit that I've never really been a fan of Bradbury. In school I read a couple of his short stories, which were pretty good but not amazing - I always thought Asimov wrote better - and the only novel of his I had read before this one was Farenheight 451, twice, and both times I found it to be among the most dull books I'd read. However, reading the back of this paperback in a used book store, I decided that he was worth another try for $1.25.
I immediately began to enjoy it. The almost filmoire style of the writing appealed to me for some reason, though there a couple lines I had to reread in order to see what he was getting at. The main character (I started calling him Jesus because that was the way Crumley often referred to him) was in a state of near desperation the whole novel, but it wasn't completely overdone, at least in my opinion. Frankly, if I was stuck in a hell-hole like Venice, CA I would be the same way.
I would definitely recommend this book, though maybe I'm simply a weird guy who likes weird books.
A great new twist for Bradbury.......2003-08-06
Ray Bradbury, as his fans know, is a man who has published a lot of works through the years -- over 500 -- but only a handful of novels. Most of his novels, in fact, are expanded versions of his short stories, e.g., Fahrenheit 451. Death Is A Lonely Business, a very good title from a man who is a master of titles, published in 1985, was his first novel since 1962's Something Wicked This Way Comes. What a surprise, then, it was for me to find this overlooked gem at my local library for a mere 50 cents. It is something one would not expect Bradbury to write: a detective story. Of sorts. This genre, previously monopolized in the science fiction realm by Isaac Asimov (as was everything else), turns out to fit Bradbury's writing style surprisingly well. As anyone who has read the author knows, he has a unique and very distinctive style -- poetic, atmospheric, and highly literary. Arthur C. Clarke has termed him a "prose poet", and this description works quite well. His aforementioned style, which is very complex and literary, would seem, on the surface, ill-suited to a hard-boiled detective novel and destined to be relegated to the short story -- as, indeed, much of Bradbury's work is. His writing style and use of imagery is very dense and literate, too much for some, and is often difficult to hold up over the course of a novel. This novel, like much of his work, contains very vivid poetic descriptions and not a few fantasy elements, and the reader is often left unsure whether a given sentence is meant to be taken literally or only figuratively. This was a problem for many readers with Something Wicked This Way Comes, a novel that had a very simple plot -- one might almost say, with its two child protagonists, that it was written for teenagers -- but this issue, thankfully, does not come up during the course of this interesting and very engrossing novel. Though this is, essentially, a detective story, it does not escape Bradbury's distinctive touches. His style is omnipresent throughout. It proves to be very engrossing. The first chapter -- the book's sections are not technically separated as such, but the definition will work fine -- pulls the reader in, and it is very difficult to put it down: I read the book nearly in one sitting. Bradbury pours on the suspense and the keeps the reader reading. His poetic descriptions of Venice, California's broken-down piers and carnival scenery are vivid and very atmospheric; the descriptions are beautiful prose to read, mysterious and alluring, dark and brooding. Any long-time Bradbury reader will immediately appreciate this aspect of the novel. The book is also loaded with literary references, to Brabdury's own work and to a vast number of other authors. This is a treat for the author's faithful readers and shows the author's encyclopedic knowledge of literature. In addition, the novels main character, by whom it is narrarated, is a highly autobiographical character clearly modeled on Bradbury's own early career. All of this is very good, certainly enough to recommend the novel. The only reason I have given it 4 stars is the ending, which is a very jarring anti-climax. The final revealing of the murderer is not a surprise, and the way in which he is caught is very unrealistic and hard to believe. This will probably frustrate the reader, as it did me, putting an ill-conceived end to an otherwise excellent novel. Stil, the book is well-worth reading, as Bradbury usually is, and this flaw only dims one's enjoyment of it somewhat. Highly recommended for Bradbury fans, or those who enjoy the noir mystery genre and are looking for something with more of a twist than they usually get.
"Hard boiled" mystery, with tender-hearted sleuth........2003-07-12
Writing in the style of hard-boiled mystery writers such as Raymond Chandler and Dashiel Hammett, Bradbury sets his story in Venice, California, in 1949, presenting as his main character a 27-year-old struggling writer, much like himself. Returning to Venice late one night on the last trolley from Los Angeles, he finds himself alone in the car, except for a mysterious, alcohol-fumed vagrant, who whispers in his ear, "Death is a lonely business." Convinced that he has met "Death's friend," the speaker gets "chicken skin," which gets worse when, upon arriving in Venice, he glances into an old canal and discovers, inside an abandoned lion cage, a body bobbing up and down on the tides.
The city of Venice in 1949 is a place for the down-and-out, its pier and amusement park crumbling, its rollercoaster lying on its side "like the bones of a vast dinosaur," old animal cages abandoned in the canals and filled with fish, and the oil pumps looking like "great pterodactyls" as they creak and groan. Inhabited by "the lonelies," old people with no futures, Venice is a dark and dismal place in those final days before the pier is demolished. Bradbury's hypnotic descriptions of this decrepitude provide dramatic contrasts with the young speaker who still has hopes, dreams, and a future.
With veteran detective Elmo Crumley as his mentor, the speaker tries to save lives and outwit a mysterious stalker, as more and more sad, old people meet their deaths. Hollywood performers, an opera singer, a lady who once raised canaries, a tarot card reader, an inept barber who knew Scott Joplin, and the owner of an old cinema all contribute to the color, atmosphere, and action in this unusual story of people and places which have outlived their usefulness.
Bradbury's writing, as always, is witty, descriptive, imaginative, and atmospheric. These separate elements do not seem to jell into a coherent whole, however. The speaker and Crumley are supposed to be "hard-boiled," but their genuine tenderness and naivete work at cross-purposes with the sometimes gruesome deaths they investigate. Unlike the classic detectives, they seem to care more about the sad, old residents than they do about catching the killer. Elements of the supernatural impinge upon the realism, and the reader is not always sure whether strange events should be taken literally or figuratively. When the killer is finally identified, it's almost an anti-climax, since he is less developed and far less interesting than his victims. Ultimately, it's the inherent "niceness" of Bradbury's characters and his clear belief in life's hopefulness which work to undermine the drama and fear engendered by the bizarre murders. As Bradbury makes clear, if one adapts to life's changes, one can truly "live." Mary Whipple
Excellent book to rediscover Bradbury with!.......2002-05-22
I bought two of his newest books, one of which is the aforementioned _Death is a Lonely Business_. I began reading it late last night and just finished it a little more than an hour ago. Technically, it's not a fantasy or science fiction, but it is such a great book, in my opinion, that I had to put a review of it somewhere.
_Death is a Lonely Business_ is Ray Bradbury's tribute to Hammet, Chandler, Cain and Ross McDonald. It is a very engrossing noir detective story, with the young Bradbury as the main character. More or less. The main character is a struggling, starving writer living in Venice, CA with a girlfriend studying in Mexico. Strange deaths begin occuring around him, seemingly triggered by a mysterious encounter with a man he calls at one point "Death's friend".
With the aid of a detective and a reclusive, yet very much alive actress, he attempts to unravel the mystery before the people he most cares about come to harm.
Bradbury's writing style, though for some perhaps a bit wordy and "purple", pulls the reader into the story, making him feel and see the world through the eyes of the main character. Once I began reading it, I found it very difficult to stop and go to school; I wanted to keep reading until the end.
The story itself, through the deliberate use of death and loss, affirms life and demands that the reader seize the moment and pursue life, happiness, and even pain. For by avoiding pain, we die a slow, lonely death.
In short, it is a book that I would highly recommend to anyone, even those dyed-in-the-wool single genre people. This has strong fantasy elements in it, and plenty of references to other books and stories by Bradbury.
What a pleasant and welcome way to rediscover a favorite author.

Oxymoronica: Paradoxical Wit & Wisdom From History's Greatest Wordsmiths
ASIN: 0761126090 |
Book Description
A collection of the notable last recorded words of the dying, Famous Last Words is, unexpectedly, bursting with life, hope, wisdom, and often laughter. Here are writers, philosophers, athletes, gangsters, kings, queens, movie stars, and politicians, in all sorts of moods and states of preparedness. Some merely want to say goodbye to loved ones, others want to create a legacy. And some are caught completely off guard, like Civil War general John Sedgwick, answering his troops' urgings to take cover: They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist-.
There's the droll: It's the wallpaper or me. One of us has to go (Oscar Wilde); the blasé: How are the Mets doing today? (Moe Berg); the cranky: It wasn't worth it (Louis B. Mayer); the wistful: That was the best ice cream soda I ever tasted (Lou Costello); the optimistic: I shall hear in heaven! (Beethoven); and the overly optimistic: I've never felt better (Douglas Fairbanks).
Ultimately, every one of these parting statements is a reflection of the person behind it. Each is accompanied by a mini-biography of the speaker, including the context of death, from the golf course (That was a great game of golf, fellers Bing Crosby) to a favorite armchair (Go on, get out. Last words are for fools who haven't said enough-Karl Marx).
Customer Reviews:
A very interesting book!.......2007-01-10
This is a great book; It is manufactured well, and is a fascinating read. I think it makes a great gift for those with an interest in History, because it is probably something that they don't have!
I leave the book on my bookshelf in my office (with the cover facing up) and people are always coming over and paging through it. It makes a great conversation piece.
It is bound nicely, with a faux leather end piece, and a solid and "weathered looking" cover piece. It would not look out of place in any nice library.
I opened it in a bookstore as a joke, but was quickly drawn in to the characters and quotes within.
Some examples of those listed:
Douglas Fairbanks
Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson
Thomas Edison
Sir Walter Raleigh
John Wilkes Booth
P.T. Barnum
Sigmund Freud
Karl Marx
Pablo Picasso
James Madison
Malcolm X
It does not just consist of quotes. Typically there is a quote and then a paragraph to a page description putting the quote in context. This makes it a lot more interesting.
One note: not all the quotes are "deathbed" quotes. Some examples, like that of Lou Gehrig, and Douglas McArthur are the last public speech they ever gave, often alluding to their impending exit on the world stage.
A pleasant read.......2005-01-08
A perfect little book to read cover to cover and then keep handy to pick up again. I thought it would be one to sit and read a page at a time slowly, for entertainment. It is so intriguing though that I found myself wanting to read the next and the next page until I was to the end. It's not a long philosophical book, rather a fun little book of quotes that induces thought/interest/smiles/curiosity. It was so interesting to contemplate the words famous and not so famous people used in their last moments, the irony, the uniqueness, the unlikely. A wonderful addition to any library and a sure to please gift.
Hmmmmmm - Makes you think and live differently............2004-12-23
When I first held this tiny book in my hand I thought, "Yeah, so?" and then I started to read. Author Ray Robinson has collected these "last words" and contents he can't be absolutely sure these were exactly the last words AND the words - all of them - have a lesson within them.
It is fair to say these last words could even prove to be life changing for readers. It made me think "What do I want to say in my final moments?"
Some of my favorites include Seattle Slew's last words, Yes, apparently the race horse spoke to his trainer, Mickey Taylor... saying "You get on with your life. I've got to go." I believe it. My dogs and cat speak to me... so who am I to wonder about Seattle Slew's words?
George Bernard Shaw spoke some very dramatic words as he met his demise, not surprising being the dramatist that he was in life. I was touched by the calming words spoken to loved ones, the profound like that from Thomas Alva Edison and the requests made such as the one by Edgar Degas.
I don't want to give their words away - you will find many more treasures if you hold this gem in your hand and thumb through it yourself.
The mini - biographies under the final words are enlightening and enjoyable as well.
This simple book.... Are the words all true? Perhaps. Are they intriguing? Yes. Are they life changing? Hopefully. Enjoy!

Horror Story!.......2007-03-21
When you go to your Doctor, one of three things are for sure. To treat your illness you will either be drugged, or cut, or hospitalized. Never mind Doctors are the 3rd leading cause of death in America (As reported by JAMA) we put a lot of trust in these people.
Most drugs are hostile to the body, and have very negative side effects, and have little more than a placebo effect on what ever your illness happens to be. Akind to going to a doctor with a broken leg, and all he gives you for a treatment is a pair of crutches. This instead of getting to the cause of your hypertension, or diabetes, or heart disease. They throw a bunch of pills at you.
The FDA has the manufacturer's best interests in hand, that is keeping the billions of dollars the snake oil garners each year flowing, regardless of whether it kills you or not. The costs have been weighed, and the patient loses.
This book "Tells It Like It Is", and everyone who takes prescription pills on a regular basis needs to read this book for your own well being.
Pharmaceutical companies hijacked medical knowledge.......2006-04-28
Billions of pills are swallowed every year in the U.S., and billions more are consumed worldwide. Yet, pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, and physicians downplay the risk. Many consumers, oblivious to the real danger, risk their lives each and every day by taking 2, 3, 4, or more drugs with potentially deadly consequences.
If you're taking prescription drugs - you need to read this book. If you want a primer on the inner workings of the pharmaceutical marketing machine - this book is for you.
The author's compare and contrast the role of the FDA before the 1990's and the 1990's & beyond. Before the 90's the FDA / Pharmaceutical industry relationship was adversarial, with drug safety dictating long, tedious clinical testing. In 1992, the world changed with the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA). Then in 1997, the Food & Drug Modernization Act (FDAMA) really blasted open the doors for the pharmaceutical industry. FDAMA allowed actively promoting off-label drug use and fast-tracking of trials.
Death by Prescription also breaks down the inner workings of the pharmaceutical marketing machine, whereby medical knowledge was hijacked by the pharmaceutical (and medical device) manufacturers. Statistics are skewed by blinding people through relative risk as opposed to the real picture shown by absolute risk.
Death by Prescription is an absolute page turner, peppered with case histories and heart-retching stories that blow apart the industry's efforts to conceal the real dangers posed by drugs.
Opportunity is in the air. Pharmaceuticals are facing huge uphill battles as they confront dwindling drug pipelines, devastating lawsuits, and are struggling to cope with the dawn of genetic medicine which will destroy mass-markets.

Very informative.......2005-09-15
This book was recommended to me by a nurse. I was having terrible side effects to cholesterol medication, and my doctor kept urging me to stay on it, despite the side effects. This book informed me that these side effects were nothing to mess with, and could cause serious harm to my liver and kidneys. I just hope I didn't find out too late. I use people to use this, when a doctor gives you a new drug, or one that doesn't agree with you. I really believe if I hadn't stopped the zocor when I did, I'd be dead.
A Balanced Examination of Drug Use.......2003-11-13
This is an important book for anyone who takes prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs or herbals. The first part examines the relationship between drug companies and the FDA, which has changed significantly since the early 1990's. Much of the funding for new drug review now comes from the drug manufacturers. The approval process is faster and testing time shorter. The author details how the public increasingly plays a role in "testing" in the form of "post-marketing surveillance" and that the adverse drug reactions encountered are under reported. Marketing includes massive distribution of "free sample" to physicians, many of whom may not be familiar with precautions -- and hence do not alert patients to warning signs and symptoms. Also, advertising of prescription medications has increased greatly in the last few years, which has greatly increased drug use and pressure on physicians to prescribe medications.
Other sections of the books discuss similar concerns with nonprescription medications (many of which recently required prescriptions) and with herbal medications.
The book is "spiced" with case histories that are real page turners. The author has done a real service to the public by describing the scope of the adverse drug reaction problem (#3 killer), and by describing several of the reasons why this has become such an overwhelming concern.
This review is written from the perspective of someone who has been in nursing for over 20 years and who has seen lots of people on lots of medications. The author, a physician, is not suggesting that people stop taking medications that may be important to their health. But he provides guidelines and tools to help individuals evaluate what they need, including the use of a pharmacist and internet resources.

Not very exciting.......2006-07-18
I usually enjoy true crime, but this one wasn't very good. Also, I thought it was totally uncalled for to waste tax payers money on a trial for Ray Copeland, when he wanted to plead guilty. Come on! The old geezer was in his 70s...life in prison would have made more sense. Of course, as these things usually are, there was political motivation involved.
Terrible....even for the true crime genre.......2006-01-13
Ok, I will admit. I am one of "those people" who likes to read true crime stories on occasion. It is one of those guilty pleasures that I try to excuse through the pursuit of understanding regarding why people can be so evil. There are quite a few very good books on the subject like "In Cold Blood" and "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" (although some may not consider this true crime). However, "The Copeland Killings" is awful. The book is not well written grammatically, is fairly slow paced for such a short true crime book and is not even a good journalism story. Basically, Ray Copeland was a bad guy all along, so you never really get to the question, "What went wrong"? I bought this book for 50 cents at a garage sale to take hiking, and I recommend paying no more than I did for this read.
Knew one of the victims.......2004-05-06
I especially liked the book due to the fact I was one of the victims girlfriends from our past in an orphanage home.I had wondered about the details of his murder and now my questions are answered.
Not the whole story.......2002-01-26
This book was interesting, but I found that it only told the story from the newspaper reporter's point of view. I think they should have interviewed the relatives of the victims also.
Interesting story, but lacks detail.......2000-08-28
You don't often see mass murderers in their 70's! That alone makes this an interesting and entertaining book. However, I was disappointed at the lack of detail in this book. I never felt I got to 'know' any of the characters, least of all the main character, Ray Copeland himself. If the author had put more time into researching the background of the Copelands and their victims, this would be a far better read.

Book Description
A near-death experience leaves Wendy Sherman noticeably changed. She had always been very straitlaced, but now she thinks nothing of discussing sex in an open and free manner. Things go from bad to worse when she tries to lure her brother-in-law into bed.
Is it possible that in the few moments she was near death, her soul left her body and someone else quietly slipped in? Does some sex-crazed deviant from the dark and distant past, someone who wants to use her body for his own lascivious pleasures, now possess her?

Simply the best small group study I have had the blessing to lead..........2006-04-26
We used this material for a home-based small group of late-20 to late-30 somethings. All of us agree that Ray Vander Laan's presentation of the Holy Land combined with appropriate scriptural context was simply the best experience we have had in terms of DVD-based learning. This includes the 40-Days of Purpose.
I will do my best to return to this review and expand on it giving input on the various sections, each of which are some of the highest quality teaching you will ever witness. We are going to use it again for a downtown lunch hour Bible Study in Fort Worth, TX.
You will need the DVD for this experience, something I am hoping to find. I seem to have lost mine.
God Bless,
Steve
