If you're the kind of Beatle fan that love discussing not only about their lives and accomplishments, but also getting down to the technical aspects involved in the creation of their revolutionary music, this is A MUST ONE to have.

Reading it is a very enjoyable experience, especially when it comes down to the explanation of the tricks they had to do in the then pre-historic technology (but still, great) Abbey Road studio to generate and record the very special sonic wishes of the Beatles.

The book itself made me realize (this time for sure) that Geoff Emerick is, really, the co-producer of Revolver and Pepper. And that means a lot!

Vitally Important Perspective.......2007-10-09

I am about 50 pages from finishing this book, but one thing I want to point out is that Geoff Emerick does not fawn all over Paul at the expense of the other Beatles, as has been stated in previous reviews. Most people I know have their favorite Beatle, and Mr. Emerick is no exception. He makes it clear that Paul was always the most friendly and diplomatic of the four, and this coincides with what we already knew. Whereas the other Beatles may have had a tendency to put up buffers around themselves, Paul tended to be the outgoing and friendly one, and I'm sure that was a comfort to Emerick, who was trying to fit in with the world's most popular pop recording group. Just the same, and as proof of his objectivity, Emerick also points to the contributions made by Paul toward the overall friction that developed and led to the break-up of the Beatles. Emerick also eventually has very positive things to say about Lennon and Harrison, and illustrates the bridges and appreciations that developed between him and them. So, don't be put off by those reviews that criticize Emerick for being unduly biased. If you have listened intently to Beatles recordings, many of your conclusions will be confirmed by what Geoff Emerick has to say in this book. I think he did an amazing job, and if you are into uncovering new and interesting detail about the Beatles and how they worked in the studio, don't pass this one by.

Few accounts of history are more accurate than the first-hand kind, and that is what we have with Mr. Emerick's outstanding book. To his credit, this thoroughly British gentleman focuses on what he actually saw versus what is commonly known about the Beatles. His tone is respectful, but he does not shy away from saying what he thinks based on what he saw and how he was treated. Mr. Emerick went on to engineer and produce some great acts, which I hope are the subjects of a future book. And consider this: When I was 19, I was just learning to tie my shoes. He was engineering the "Revolver" album!

Class Act.......2007-09-17

I couldn't put this book down....what a fascinating first hand account of one of the most infuential musical experiences in modern history. I think you will find it particularly interesting if you write and record music, as Geoff's recollections are incredibly detailed and specific. It's truly unbelievable that he could remember so much of what happened in such picture perfect detail, and it is a lasting testament to critical and often unsung heroics of the worlds best audio engineers. Howard Massey did an excellent job helping Geoff make this material completely accessible to the lay person and fan as well. When I proposed to my wife in 2002 I wrote a symphonic piece and surprised her at Capitol Records in Studio A, where we recorded it live (I proposed afterwards). While they were mixing the music we took a tour of Capitol Records, and when we returned there was a gentleman in the studio playing the most beautiful music on the grand piano. We listened for awhile, then entered to studio and spoke with him for almost half an hour. What a lovely man, and what great music. That was Geoff Emerick. Perhaps someday we will hear you on the other side of the glass young man:)

I am a physics professor working on semiconductor materials. Polymer is not my area, but they always attracts me a lot.
I can't believe this great book hasn't been reviewed yet. Yes, it is written by two Russian scientists. But who said Russians can only write rigorous math books? This book is not a monograph but for everyone interested in polymer physics, material or popular science. It explains a lot of phenomena in a clear, consise and humours language. There is a little math, not hard at all. Freshmen level calculus would be sufficient to understand the book. In fact, all through the book, the authors were showing the interactions between different factors. These factors are the reason that polymers have so many tantalizing and sometimes contradicting properties. To explain those, math is necessary.
The movies included in the accompanied CD are great, think about how much work is put on making them!

I was a fan of Michael Jackson's since I was 5 so imagine my increasingly mixed feelings regarding the many bizarre changes I observed over the years. The auther confirmed my gut feelings regarding Michael's disdain for his own race. It's unfortunate, pitiful, & very, very sad. I've seen him grow from a cute cheeked adorable little boy to an inhuman-looking wizened freak because of childhood trauma & self hatred. My mom says he looks like a "dough-face." This man used to be the biggest pop music sensation in the world, but he got so caught up in being recognized as "royalty" that he turned himself into something I can't even fathom. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because it was a little too short. So sad, because he was a talented individual, but it seems that all that talent went down the drain because he got so caught up in his own celebrity & self glorification. As for him hating his own race...pitiful. Apparently Mr. Jackson has never heard of karma, or doesn't care.

Perhaps the most overlooked and underrated work on Michael Jackson. It was a short and informative read. It didn't bore you with things you already knew and heard. It was simply put and easy to follow. Kudos to Bob Jones for finally speaking out. I don't know how well this sold, but if Mr. Jones had gone with a major publisher, such as Harper, Simon and Schuster, Warner it would have done even better. Great job and thanks for the compact and detailed-filled story.

"Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask" is a comprehensive story about this remarkable man, that attempts to reveal the truth about him. The book is well written and fairly balanced account on Michael Jackson by someone who should know him well, having worked with him for over 30 years. Michael Jackson is clearly a musical genius with exceptional step, spin and turn on the dance floor. He is one of the most successful American musician and entertainer. His music has brought a lot of happiness to many people all over the world. He is often referred to as The King of Pop or Wacko Jacko. His successful musical career and controversial life style has been at the forefront of pop culture for over a quarter of a century.

Jackson began his musical career at the age of five as lead singer of The Jackson 5. He made his first solo recordings in 1971 while remaining a member of the group. He began a full-fledged solo career in 1979 and formally parted with his siblings in 1984. In his solo career, Jackson recorded and co-produced the best selling album of all time Thriller, with approximate worldwide sales of 60 million , received thirteen Grammy awards and charted thirteen number one singles in the U.S. Michael Jackson has been awarded numerous honors.

From 1988 to 2005, Jackson lived on his Neverland Ranch property, on which he built an amusement park and private zoo for the enjoyment of economically disadvantaged and terminally ill children. His frequently held sleepover parties have received widespread critical media-coverage, especially after he revealed that he sometimes slept in the same bed with several unrelated children. This led to him being accused of child sexual abuse both in 1993 and 2003. He was eventually tried and acquitted of the latter allegations in 2005.

As a human being, Michael Jackson made mistakes and his eccentric character is well known. I am a black man myself and the fact that Michael does not like blacks does not bother me. What is of concern is his relationship with children which in any case he was acquitted. What I consider important is the thrill I have got from his music. Michael should be left alone in freedom instead of being hounded all the time. After all, the last time I checked, America was a democracy, where a man has a right to be eccentric.

Don't listen to the completely moronic reviews posted here. This is a great book. The authors have done an excellent job researching, providing insight and giving great technical information about each track. There seems to be a lot of crybabying about certain tracks being left out, certain tracks being listed over others--who the hell cares, it's the f'n Beatles, for crying out loud, every song is great, from Yesterday to A Day in the Life, to Revolution #9. This is a book that the casual listener and the rabid fan will love.

Rating Some Memorable Beatles Music!.......2006-05-09

Anyone daring to rate the "music of the Gods" is setting themselves up for a pasting. Authors Stephen Spignesi and Michael Lewis dared the unthinkable and the results are contained in this interesting book on the "100 Best Beatles Songs."

After an introduction on how they arrived at the top 100 - songwriting, musicianship, production, lyrics - Spignesi and Lewis take us song-by-song through their ranking. Number #1 is "A Day in the Life;" #100, "Helter Skelter." Coverage of each song includes what the song is about, why it made the top 100, interesting facts about the song, what the authors most liked about the song, etc.

So, did all my Beatle favorites make the list? No! Am I cheesed off about the rankings? Not especially! Are some of their statements about what a particular song means pretty obvious or reaching for it? Yup! But so what!?! The authors wrote the book and they're entitled to their opinion.

I enjoyed this book. It takes you down a musical road of wonderful songs - lovely ballads, hard rockers and psychedelic head-trips - that enriched our lives. Reading this book is a fun experience.

I guess I'm just not enough of a Beatles snob like some of the other folks reviewing this book. I bought it, read it and enjoyed it. Just because the authors' opinion on the song ranking differs from mine, that doesn't make it a bad book, just a difference in opinion. I glad I bought it.

A great idea for a book wasted.......2005-08-10

As a major Beatles fan, I am a sucker for a book like this. I understand that a book titled the 100 Best whatever is going to be subjective. I don't mind that. (I'm amazed at how many reviewers have criticised this book largely because the authors either included songs the reviewer doesn't like or left out songs the reviewer loves. That's going to happen in any book like this.) However, what we want out of such a book is a critical analysis that true fans can respect. All opinions are not created equal and these two guys have absolutely no meaningful insight into what made Beatles music special.

Perhaps the single greatest indicator as to how fatuous these two guys are is that they attempt to explain what each song is about. They demonstrate that they are either masters of the obvious or as insightful as the average 9th grader. Lyrics that aren't obvious on their face are poetry. If a reviewer has knowledge of first hand experiences that led to the writing of the song or knowledge of allusions in the song, those are worth mentioning. Otherwise, spare us your uninformed "insights." (See their section on the first song, "Day in the Life" for a perfect example.)

The book does have an interesting layout and is easy to skim, and, finally, it is about the Beatles. Hence, it is not worthless, but it is certainly not worth the money. Pass on it.

This is by far the worst book on the beatles i've ever read and i've read almost all of them.All the great songs left out of this book pisses me off!These two guys are idiots, and the're book sucks!

Feisty female's timefaring dimensional adventures.

Roberson cites Moorcock as one of his influences, among others, and this is reasonably clear, and as he mentions, it is definitey more Second Ether than Jerry Cornelius. The family relations in the Bonaventure brood are certainly pretty normative compared to the Cornelius clan, as long as your normative sort of family is more Buckaroo Banzai than leave it to beaver.

World Without End.......2007-04-01

Chris Roberson is part of a certain cabal of science fiction authors that allegedly haunt Central Texas, plotting all manner of mischief and nefarious deeds, or so I am told. I mean, Austin's a comparatively small town, and I'm regularly running into the likes of Kinky Friedman, Ernest Hemingway, and Honore de Balzac, and don't think I haven't resorted to fisticuffs to settle certain sensitive affairs, but I'm pretty certain that I've never encounterd Mr. Roberson and his ilk. But I digress.

This present volume is a repackaging of, and expansion upon, "Any Time At All", the previous collection of the escapades of Roxanne Bonaventure, whose tales have been under development for several years. As a young girl, Roxanne comes into possession of a strange bracelet that allows her to travel through time and space, giving her access to all types of variant Earths both past and future, although she soon discovers that she can never change her native timeline's past. (As with most time travel fiction, considering the physics and implications and rules of rattling across time/space is headache-inducing here, so best not to think too deeply upon the mechanics, although there is one particular precept here that is critical to the novel's primary plot point.)

Naturally, she embarks upon amusing escapades throughout history, including a mandatory brush with the Nazis, because if you can go to the past, battling these evildoers is pretty much de rigeur. She also pops back to Victorian London to assist one Sandford Blank (a fictional melange of Sherlock Holmes and Sexton Blake), a character who will be featured on his own in one of the prolific Mr. Roberson's forthcoming novels.

It should be noted that the author credits several influences, among them Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton Universe (a postulation that many of the Victorian and Pulp Era heroes are all related), in emulation of which Mr. Roberson has created a whole clan of Bonaventures who've had rollicking adventures of their own in separate novels. He also gives a nod to Jess Nevins' comprehensive if daunting "Encylopedia of Fantastic Victoriana", which is definitely worth picking up for fans of that genre, or followers of Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentleman.

I also feel compelled to mention that Mr. Roberson is the grand poobah of MonkeyBrain Books, a genre publisher with some excellent titles.

"Here, There & Everywhere" is episodic in nature and doesn't necessarily break any new ground in the time travel genre, but I'm a fan of cross-pollination with historical figures and other literary characters, and so I give it higher marks than I might otherwise. Also, the cover art by John Picacio is great. (He has done most, if not all, of the covers for the works of the aforementioned cabal of authors.)

Oh, fans of Doctor Who will probably find an extra dimension in this novel.

A lot of fun.......2006-09-22

This book is a lot of fun to read. Roberson never lets the grass grow under his likeable heroine, Roxanne Bonaventure, as she jumps around not only in time but across realities. There is a lot of sly humor throughout and there are moments that acheive a nice emotional resonance as she deals with her father's illness and her own loneliness.

A few minor complaints. It felt a little rushed. The book is bursting at the seams with ideas, but frequently they are glossed over. Decades of subjective time are covered in pages. This book could have easily been twice as long without losing any of its momentum.

It also doesn't help that many scenes take place off stage. Again - I wanted to know more about what Roxanne was doing.

All in all, though, I highly recommend this novel and I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

strong time travel thriller .......2006-02-13

In 1980 British physics Professor Bonaventure sends his brilliant daughter to attend a top school in California. As Roxanne struggles to adjust to no longer being the superstar, a flash of light followed by an elderly woman suddenly appearing startles the child. The woman seems near death, but gives Roxanne the Sofia bracelet placing it on the child's arm. The light flashes again and the woman is gone with blood stains on the grass and the Sofia on her arm as proof that she had been there.

Roxanne begins to learn some of the properties of the Sofia when she travels back in time to the Victorian age and ultimately ancient Egypt. She soon finds that her devices also has the capability of taking her to alternate Earths populated by various other sentient species or just slight twists of ours like a twenty-first century retro on John, Paul, George and Pete. However, vertically back and forth through time and horizontally traversing space and dimensions leave Roxanne wondering about the device, the woman, and herself as she begins to feel alone though she meets all sorts of interesting people and creatures as she journeys the multiverse.

Rather than ignore time paradoxes, Chris Roberson cleverly uses them to enhance the feeling that Roxanne and readers are in deed trekking the multiverse. The heroine is terrific as a courageous spirited protagonist who ventures into the unknown with daring fortitude, but becomes lonely as the vastness of time and space seems overwhelming with no one except to a minor degree her father to share what she sees. Roxanne's personality keeps the episodes fun as she undertakes one adventure after another boosted by humorous sidebars. This is a strong time travel thriller starring a wonderful lead character who the audience will want to be her companion.

The concept here isn't particularly new, as the author acknowledges with references to both "By His Bootstraps" and "The Man Who Folded Himself." But Roberson manages to find something rather new to say. Not only does he knock most time-travel SF into a cocked hat, by way of modern physics, but his take on the nature of time and the universe is particularly satisfying.

Roxanne Bonaventure is unique in the cosmos, the sole possessor of a 5-dimensional magic bracelet that allows her to move as she will in space, time and probability. The story follows her from the age of 11, when she is granted this "blessing", through the long years of her life. In the vignettes that comprise the novel, we see her learn and change, observing humanity in all its choices, until she finally finds out that what she really wants is the one thing she cannot have.

But sometimes you get what you need.
