5 out of 5 stars Requires a good GM.......2006-06-01

I always enjoyed a good Hunter game because players are in control of supernaturally imbued characters who are entirely clueless to the World of Darkness. Thankfully with the well written, and familiar, rules, you have the opportunity to fight back against the creatures who prey on humanity. This is not an investigate and run away game like Call of Cthulhu.

With that said, a good game requires that the cluelessness is maintained to keep the level of excitement up. You can have players who know about the World of Darkness, but that information should not influencing their character's in-game decisions. A Hunter is not going to know a Brujah from a Gangrel or that a large man in a business suit is a Glasswalker.

Overall, Hunter was my favorite of the "old-school" White Wolf/World of Darkness games/settings. The basic rules are consistent with the other titles in the line, with only a few variations. This made it easy to pick up and start playing on our first night with the rule book.

5 out of 5 stars Only for Experts.......2006-01-24

This is a hard game for a true gamer! sadly, the low level of power of the characters of this game can deceive other players of powergaming series like vampire and werewolf. This game is about terror and madness, not to make the world a couple of slaves and show the most powers of strange forces. Through the scenario of the Time of Judgement, this game shows exactly the situation of the humans and the apocalyptic situation of the end of the WoD. Only for experts, not for Powerseekers.

3 out of 5 stars "Heeeere monster. That's a nice monster...".......2004-02-01

Though suffering from a bit of the verbosity that seems to plague White Wolf publications (the supplements in particular; you could halve their lengths if you just made sure each point was made only once), Hunter: The Reckoning is, despite the judgements flung towards it, actually one of the most down-to-earth, difficult, and tactically challenging games White Wolf has released. Though many might instantaneously assume that it is meant to be an Army of Darkness style shoot-'em-up (like the namesake video games based on Hunter), the inclusion of firearms is primarily just a natural human response to grab SOMETHING they can fight back with. Honestly, against blood-drinking walking corpses, semi-spirit werewolves, immaterial ghosts, and horrors far worse, you'll need brains to survive. Unless your storyteller is heavy on action and firepower, trying to play this game in the twinky stereotype it's often given will get you killed, fast. In fact, not all the Creeds (philosphical archetypes of Hunter, which determine their powers) are even geared toward fighting at all. Some try to rehabilitate or cure monsters, while others don't even go that far, simply seeking to understand them, let them know they are not begrudged for it, and leave the doors of forgiveness open. Trying to talk an angry vampire out of killing a roomful of mortals can take on challenges all its own.

An issue of confusion seems to be those who mix up the Hunters (capital H; note the full, proper title being the "Imbued Hunters") with unrelated groups. Though some number of them may have joined groups like the Society of Leopold, Hunters are imbued with their powers when confronted with the supernatural. They share no unified system, no overarching organization or membership cards. Though they can meet with others of their kind, their disorganized nature and supernatural powers set them apart from conventional mortal hunters, be they alone or in groups. The issue of incompatibility seems to be largely unfounded. Imbued Hunters are explained in several White Wolf core rulebooks, and creatures from several of these books are even summed up in Hunter. The relatively minimal mention of them does make sense. Ultimately, the Hunters, as they are, are not a powerful force. All together, their powers and armaments mean relatively little. Only with time, careful planning, and survival could they ever hope to take back the night. It is this ultimate weakness which is their primary dilemma. Still ultimately mortals with a few helpful cantrips and tricks to give them a better chance, most are left with the disappointment of only being able to do what few things they can.

Whether you want to play a boomstick-toting zombie blaster, a skittish parapsychologist trying to get a peek into a dark and hidden world, a wandering redeemer seeking to save the inhuman souls of the damned, a stake-toting Van Helsing, or a stiff-collared exorcist attempting to dispel hellish influence from the world, there's a niche in Hunter for you. Just don't pack any guns you can't drop in a hurry. You'll need to shed as much weight as possible when it's time to start running.

5 out of 5 stars Very good storytelling horror game.......2004-01-31

If you're interested in playing a vampire hunter, or werewolf hunter... this is a great game to do it based on a storytelling aspect rather than dice rolls.
Also, it's set up to play as a kind of survival-horror game better than anything else; it doesn't have the dice rolling of the old Dark Conspiracy game, but you can definitely do the story well with the character outlines provided.
The book is well layed out and easy (and fun) to read, with more than a few inspiring sections for a beginning gamemaster. I do recommend picking up the player's guide with it, though, especially if your players are veterans of other RPG's.

5 out of 5 stars VERY Overlooked.......2003-04-22

I've played Werewolf. Hell, I've dabbled in Vampire. Both are really great games if you want to play as something that's rediculously powerful and only have a real challenge if you're fighting an older Vampire or Werewolf (in either game). Hunter is different: instead of being this ungodly-powerful monster, you're this regular Joe with a neat trick, trying to fight the aforementioned monsters.
It sounds unfair, I know, but that's what makes this game beautiful. You have extraordinary powers, but they're hardly enough to stop a charging Get of Fenris or Bruja in its tracks. You're alone, and if you don't find help, either you'll die, or you'll be driven insane. That, my friend, is true fear.
Yes, the story aspect is my favorite part of this game, but let's discuss the gameplay. As in most White Wolf games, the gameplay takes a backseat for story, but there's a perfectly working game here, too. Each player creates a Hunter (someone trying to fight monsters that only they can see) and assigns him/her powers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-11-17

This is probably my all-time favorite Christian novel. Huggins, who is now retired from law enforcement, is also an award-winning journalist. This is the story of a man who sought redemption and tried to leave his old life behind. This book is action-packed, gripping and spellbinding. It will pierce you to your very soul.

Gage, our hero, is an exile in his own land, abandoned on a military mission by his own country. He is rescued by a priest and an archeologist, who smuggle him back into the states and who helps him see a different way of life. Then a secret society kills the priest and Gage must take up the guns that he had forsworn, to protect those most dear and near to him.

Can Gage come out of retirement and take on some of the best assassins in the world? Can he save his friends? Can he stop a great evil from taking place? You will have to read The Reckoning to find out.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-02

Huggins does a masterful job of combining Christian truth with modern warfare. The hero realizes that in order to defeat evil, sometimes you must take up a "sword" and fight. I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars 6 stars.......2006-10-13

If there was a way I could rate this book higher than 5, I definately would.

If you are a fan of incrediblely well written action, Christian themes, powerful topics, well-researched fighting techniques, and an all around good story... this is for you. Even if you dont' like action, you should get this.

One of the many reasons this book is so incredibly awesome is because on one character. Gage. He is the best of the best. The author researched every type of fighting to make this character. All the way from more-than-advanced knife techniques, to war tactics.

To state it simply: Get this book.

4 out of 5 stars Much ado about a manuscript.......2006-08-20

James Byron Huggins' thrillers are catered for the manly man. They are routinely explosive, tautly-paced, and laced with a supernatural element. The Reckoning lives up to his standards and, even though initially confusing, is a bonafide page-turner. His protagonist, Gage, is patentedly a superlative killing machine yet is spiritually conflicted. Even though The Reckoning is touted as a "Christian" thriller, it doesn't really get that preachy, which I appreciated.

Jonathan Gage is a man at odds with himself and with his murky past as a proficient, highly trained Delta Force operative. He's trying to change his ways, but it's proving to be a daunting task, as he is tasked by his friend Simon, a dying priest, to safeguard an ancient manuscript which foretells the advent and identity of the Anti-Christ. Shadowy forces stand in Gage's way, forces focused on bringing about the downfall of mankind. Gage, weary of violence but having no other recourse, must now muster all his old training and once again resume the ways of the killer. Because, ultimately, it falls on him and a few allies to keep darkness at bay and safeguard the future of humanity.

If that plot summary sounded overly dramatic, well, that's the vibe I got off reading The Reckoning. This book is one of James Byron Huggins's earlier works (published in 1994), and it shows. I found it initially hard to get into, which actually surprised me because I generally find his novels (Sorcerer, Cain, Hunter, Nightbringer) to be vastly entertaining stuff. But, in the Reckoning, I was thrown for a loop with the disconcertingly abrupt start, which throws the reader smack dab in the thick of the action. It left me with a lost feeling - as if I'd missed out on some key events which had gone on before page one. However, once I pressed on, the story rapidly became more involving and, in the end, proved to be an intense, adrenalin rush of a thriller. It is action-packed (believe me, brother!) to the max. The pace is hectic, as the protagonists seem to be assaulted or on the assault every few pages or so. The Reckoning is also colored with a supernatural Doomsday element. Anytime the Anti-Christ figures into the plot, you gotta think the stakes are raised just a tad more.

Gage is so daunting and self-sufficient a character that it's sometimes hard to empathize with him. Whenever he's in action, he simply becomes a killing automaton. It's a good thing Huggins infuses his hero with a conflicted persona, said conflict arising from his newly awakened moral compass, which goes at odds with his military-instilled, tightly honed instincts for mayhem. Also a good idea of Huggins is the introduction of a nemesis, Sato, who seems to be even more of a bad mo-fo than Gage. Their first encounter doesn't go well for our hero. But it does serve to humanize him more.

After Gage, the book has another intriguing character: the grizzled Nathaniel Kertzman, a civilian investigator assigned by Washington with unearthing a covert military faction steeped in illegal activities, of which investigation Gage is the prime suspect. Kertzman is uncompromising and honest to a fault, yet is comfortable with the greasy machinations and the double- and cross-dealings of Washington's upper-level power brokers. A fun character.

Then you have the baddies. There is a chain of command to these villains, with each elevated position of power seemingly providing a more callous and corrupt villain. The main Machiavellian mastermind is snaky cold and without scruples, while the deadly warrior Sato lives for the perfect kill.

At 473 pages, The Reckoning is a thick read. However, once you get into it, those pages'll fly by. I personally couldn't wait for Gage and Sato's final "dance." Huggins's research really shows thru as he ably engrosses the reader with a revealing depiction of the life and ways of an elite commando. Three and a half testosterone-filled stars.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD BUT KIND OF EMPTY ..........2006-06-10

This is a good storie and follow up to vol.1 , however I just wanted more at the end . Destro makes peace with Cobra Comander , Storm Shadow is working for Cobra and try's to kill hawk and then get's away , and Snake Eyes's face is cut up again by Storm Shadow .

I know it's a good thing to leave the reader wantimg more (and I will order the next trade paperback) but this storie wasn't as satisfying as the first book . I almost gave it a 4 star rateing , but it just fell short .

Lastly , if this series is a mix of marvel and cartoon continuity , why isn't Cluch in that "Alternate Reality" where cobra took over the world and the Dreadnoks where cops and the Baroness was good and Cluch , Grunt , and Stealer stayed behind because thier alternate selves had been killed ?

Hopefully some writer from Devil's Due read's this and comes up with "G.I.GOE team other earth" ... that would be cool !

A must have for anyone with an interest in Lady Death who missed the early comics. Like most books of this type it is a collection of the first few Lady Death comic books. Great art and good story. The protagonist is not one of the good guys, but why would she have to be to make the story good?

1 out of 5 stars Apologies.......2006-11-30

I hate to write a bad review. However, I want to spare the potential buyer of a waste of his/her money.

I love these types of stories, and I have all of the Forester, O'Brian, Kent, Lambdin, etc. novels. I bought this whole series, simply assuming that I would like it. Unfortunately, I could barely force myself to finish the first one. Yet, I thought that the series and writing might grow in the later volumes, so I persevered. I was wrong. The second and third ones were just as bad, and I just can't force myself to read them anymore.

God bless Mr. Parkinson, I'm sure he was a wonderful man and he can surely write better than I can, but his fiction writing is horrible. One reviewer of an early volume called it "wooden," and that's what his writing is. There's no depth to the stories or the characters - there's no excitement. Mr. Parkinson wrote many books on business management, and his novels, sadly, read like one of those books.

Again, I'm sorry to write a bad review, but please do yourself a favor and find one of these at a library before you shell out your money for the series.

4 out of 5 stars DeLancey survives fever ports, pirates, and battles.......2002-01-21

The year is 1805 and England is at war. At the end of the last novel, "Touch and Go," Richard DeLancey was a commander returning home to England as a peace treaty was signed. This novel (copyright 1978) finds DeLancey married to Fiona, a former actress. He has just been brought back onto active service, promoted to captain, and been given the older 32-gun frigate Laura for service at the Cape, in the Far East, and in the Indian Ocean. He must part from his young wife for an unknown period of time.

He has the usual assignments, including convoy escort, and is given a special assignment to chase down a French privateer. He also seeks his long-lost brother. He has exploits in escorting a convoy of East Indiamen attacked by French ships, and participating in the capture of Mauritius (repeated to some extent by the fictional James Aubrey in later novels written by Patrick O'Brien). After taking command of a different frigate, DeLancey finds a creative way to bring the ship's crew up to full strength (losses from disease and battles had been high). He then wins honors for himself and his crew in a final confrontation with the French.

5 out of 5 stars A Discovery.......2007-07-07

I just finished reading A Reckoning, which I discovered accidentally while reading another book, The Feminine Side of God. (May Sarton's book was mentioned.) What a joy to read/to discover her and her writing!!!! Sarton has tremendous insight, not only into women's inner thoughts/life, but into the mind and heart of a woman who has been told she does not have long to live. Her choice is to live in her dying. To her it is an unknown experience, similar to being born. No one knows what the journey will be like. It is a poignant experience the reader shares with the protagonist. On another level, a mother who reflects on her relationships with her grown children can relate perfectly.

I intend to read her other novels, but for now I am recommending it to all my elderly women friends.

5 out of 5 stars Learning About Life.......2007-05-13

May Sarton has a way of explaining what life is all about through her fiction. When I read any of her work I make notations of sentences I want to refer to again after I am done reading the book. She has a powerful voice in her writing. A Reckoning is another one of my favorite books by this author.

5 out of 5 stars Dying woman must reflect on her past, family life, and self........1999-09-07

Laura is dying of terminal cancer. From the moment her doctor tells her she has less than 2 years to live, Laura is determined so see her death as a journey, and she intends to make the journey on her own terms. She quickly realizes that she must come to some sort of "reckoning" with her past, her relationship with her mother, her relationship with her own children, and more curiously, her relationship with a childhood friend, Ella. Although she and Ella have not seen each other in over 40 years, memories of Ella haunt her, and fill her with a sense of peace.

Laura is determined to die her way, with her animals, her memories, her thoughts, her music, her books, and a dear old aunt to read to her in the winter afternoons. These are what she believes to be the "real connections" in life. She does not want to engage in conversation with people who cause her stress (such as her sisters and her children). Laura learns during her journey, that it is through these last conversations and moments with the persons she least wanted to see, that she gains her most valuable insights.

The book has a happy ending. But beware! Sarton's writing is witty, passionate and sophisticated. She uses her psychological knowledge of the human psyche with poignant accuracy.

4 out of 5 stars Plodding, but good........1999-12-10

I don't recall reading anything by Clive Egleton before "Dead Reckoning." Of course I also admit that the vast number of books I read never quite distinguish themselves in my mind and get dumped into a kind of cerebral soup. "Dead Reckoning" is perfect for several nights pre-sleep reading or, if you're in a warm climate (lucky you), take it to the beach. The opening sets the stage beautifully for the rest of the story. Peter Ashton is revealed to us as a brave, cunning, loving but somewhat limited man, hemmed in by the politics of his bureaucracy. Ashton's first goal is not protecting his nation as a "secret agent," but shielding his very competent wife from harm. The story never stops moving. Egleton reveals one detail after another, introduces one plot twist at a time. The book never becomes heart-stopping, but it never becomes dull either. Egleton's involvement of technology is different than that employed by others (i.e., Dale Brown): Egleton has actually taken the time to research the limited technology he describes - and gets it right. (I am always jarred when I read someone like Brown or Clancy and they describe something that is flat out wrong.) Overall, "Dead Reckoning" is a good read. It will not keep you awake into the early hours, turning pages - but in the end it will leave you with a very satisfying feeling.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent espionage thriller.......1999-10-23

Victor Hazlewood, the Director General of England's Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), has to tell the bad news to one of his best operatives Peter Ashton. Apparently, Peter's wife Hazel, a former operative, was found brutally murdered in the office of psychiatrist Dr. Ramash. Two other females besides Harriet were also found dead in the doctor's office. However, Peter soon learns that his beloved Harriet is still alive, which leads him to believe that someone obviously penetrated SIS to have obtained the information about Harriet being found in the doctor's office.

Soon evidence surfaces that other secret information has leaked. Peter begins to investigate the situation even though his superiors seem more apt to slow him down if it furthers their personal agenda. Clues fail to lead to anything new and more murders follow. Peter knows one thing is certain. Someone(s) is playing a dangerous game in which major power shifts could occur if they succeed.

Anyone who believes that that espionage thrillers died with the collapse of the Berlin Wall obviously has not read Clive Egleton. With DEAD RECKONING, Mr. Egleton keeps his spy out in the cold even though Peter has family obligations. The story line is typical Egleton as it's filled with head-butting action, twisting plots, and a good mystery. Peter retains his charm even as he swim a bureaucratic ocean filled with sharks and barracudas. Fans of espionage thrillers need only turn to Mr. Egleton for a post Cold War chiller that keeps the audience on the edge from start to finish.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not great........2005-12-17

John Ney Rieber, The Books of Magic: Reckonings (Vertigo, 1997)

Reckonings, the third book in the Sandman spinoff Books of Magic series, is a marked improvement over book two, though it's still not up to the standard set by the Sandman series.

In this one, Tim and Molly, along with a few extraplanar friends, are off gallavanting when Molly gets kidnapped by a bunch of pink dinosaurs. (I kid you not.) In order to rescue her, Tim has to brave the fires of Hell-- except that Hell has no fires. Hell is a vast bureaucracy just waiting to implode upon itself.

It's amusing enough for what it is, but the narrative lacks the Gaiman touch, substituting labyrinthine plot twists for Gaiman's dark characterization and master's touch with detail. Still, it's enjoyable enough to keep me going in the series. ***

5 out of 5 stars Finding the way in hell.......2005-05-21

The Books of Magic series follow the life of Tim Hunter, who is destined to be the world's most powerful magician, but for now is just a teenager. He has recently discovered that all the imaginary children that he had as a child are real and live in an empty lot. He takes his girlfriend, Molly, to visit. She goes into the woods to heed the call of nature and is kidnapped and taken to hell by a group of pink dinosaurs. Hell is not a place of fire and brimstone. Rather it is run like a large and very burocratic corporation. Fire and brimstone is just one torture provided.

Meanwhile Tim Hunter from the future, a powerful magician who has traded his memories away in various confrontations with demons, has realized that life is not all that. He is now trying to raise young Tim Hunter not to be like him.

A mysterious character named Nobody figures heavily in Tim and Molly's plights. Each must read a short fairy tale in a book. The fairy tales involve a main character who looks and talks just like the main character. The stories end tragically for the main character. In a final confrontation Tim, Molly and grown up Tim end up inside the story read by the demon who has kidnapped Molly and been controlling grown up Tim. Each must play by the rules enough to trick the story without loosing touch with reality and being pulled into the book.

The art style is realistic and well done. The layouts are a little off. Often I read panels out of sequence and the pacing on each page was just a tad off. The art here is fine but the highlight of the book is the twisting and detailed plot.

I recommend that you read the previous book in the series (Summonings) first, but I seriously do recommend that book. Two reasons for that: You will have background so that this book makes more sense. The two books go together and the major plots that were opened in Summonings are resolved here, so reading them together is so much better.

3 out of 5 stars It's no Gaiman, but good stuff........1999-07-29

What the title says. It cant hope to match what Gaiman did in the original mini....but it's good stuff. Interesting relations...although the future/past relation is somewhat lacking overall. It seems incomplete when read alone. Makes you wish you had other chapters. But overall good stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-26

Basically, this book boils down to
1) Don't change into a cat until you know what you are doing
2) Don't take advice from random witches
3) Teenage logic will work with the king of fairyland
4) Be sympathetic to married deific types

It all ends well for now for teenage uber-magician, Tim Hunter, and his girlfriend, who seem a lot more concerned for each other than normal.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2000-05-16

This book uses a lot of real information from the period. Being interested in real religious studies, I can vouce that many of the religious heresies listed were historically real. I own some of the religious texts this book makes reference too. It's grasp of the gnostic movements and their many Dark Ages spawns is amazing.

The Merits/Flaws and fictional heresies in this book are equally excellent. This book adds a mature, dark feel for an already bleak game.

It is one of the best mood books ever released under the White Wolf/Black Dog title.
