Arguably the best book ever on what is increasingly becoming the science of persuasion. Whether you're a mere consumer or someone weaving the web of persuasion to urge others to buy or vote for your product, this is an essential book for understanding the psychological foundations of marketing. Recommended.

Book Description

Some people just won't take no for an answer. In Influence, Dr. Robert Cialdini explains the six psychological principles that drive our powerful impulse to comply to the pressures of others and shows how we can defend ourselves against manipulation (or put the principles to work in our own interest).

Influence guarantees two things: Readers will never say yes again when they really mean no, and they'll be more persuasive than ever before.

4 out of 5 stars Better yet, buy it for someone else!.......2007-10-04

Just reading Influence by Robert Cialdini. Wow. What a brilliant book. There's so much here for marketers to be aware of. A lot of this is taking things we do intuitively, or that we've learned from from experience and exploring the psychology behind it. I'm of the mind that the more you know how something works, the more you'll be able to use it to your advantage.

There is a fantastic chapter on consistency that explores our natural tendency to want to stick to our guns once we've made a commitment.

"If I can get you to make a commitment (that is, to take a stand, to go on record), I will have set the stage for your automatic and ill-considered consistency with that earlier commitment. Once a stand is taken, there is a natural tendency to behave in ways that are stubbornly consistent with the stand."

The author cites a great number of stories, anecdotes and examples to illustrate each point. It's really fun and I can see using these examples many times in presentations and in idea generation.

For instance, he sites how weight loss experts use the written commitment to help set people set and stick to their goals. Also how Amway uses the same method. Or the numerous Proctor & Gamble contests that encourage you to "tell us in x number of words why you love product y"

Can you get a commitment somehow?

It's just one of many great examples in this book. Buy it. Better yet, buy it for someone else. You'll learn why that's a good idea when you read the book!

5 out of 5 stars Someone just replaced my sales six shooter with an AK-47.......2007-09-21

Someone just replaced my sales six shooter with an AK-47. Wow! This is a very valuable book, not just for sales but for life. He has five main areas on what influences us. I have used them all, but now I really know how to use them: Reciprocation ( I give you a bit to get a lot) , Commitment and consistency (If I get you to state in public what you will do, you will likely do it), Social Proof (If you see others doing it you will too), Liking, (All I need is you to like me and if I provide a good deal, I make a sale), Authority (Nurses could kill you if a Dr says so!), Scarcity ( if I give and then take away an item, you want it more) . His discussions wheel from how to ensure you get help if you are having a heart attack to how to prevent a revolution. Thoughtful, insightful, easy to read and to use. He has reaffirmed my faith in some academics. Buy it! Read it! "Cause if you don't, when I call, you will buy whatever I am selling, "cause you haven't got a chance now!

5 out of 5 stars Must read!.......2007-09-20

I can sum it up by this, when I was in college a professor assigned us to read a couple of chapters in the book for the next class. I complained saying we had enough on our plates. The professor then told me, James, if you read these chapters and don't find them interesting, I'll give you an "A" in the class. So, trust me, I picked up the book "fully" expecting not to like ... but I couldn't put it down. And true to his word, the professor asked me in front of the class if I thought it was worth the read and I had to say yes and that I found it fascinating.

I found Influence to be a very captivating read. This book gives insight to both those in the marketing field and for every consumer. I see "tricks" outlined in book that people try to use on me all the time ... this book has helped me with defensive techniques at sales pressure. I've also purchased it for several friends.

I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A shield against weapons of influence.......2007-09-11

Advertisers use six psychological principles to take money out of our pockets. They exploit our habit of taking certain shortcuts to make decisions. The author thoroughly explains these six principles by using research data and many interesting and instructive stories. But most importantly he instructs the reader, how to say no, and thus shield herself when weapons of influence are turned on her. In the long run this book could pay for itself a thousand times over.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2007-09-05

I wish I could condense the experience of reading this book down to a pill, I'd take it every morning. One of the best books I've ever read. Every chapter is packed with examples, all extremely fascinating.

This book should be required reading for anyone living in a human society. If you are in business of any kind or have kids, buy this book immediately, you won't regret it.

Larry, weary of dealing with his disabled wife and her needs, sees Melody as a release, a guilty pleasure. But does Larry have what it takes to hold on to her when another suitor steps on the scene and challenges him? A little puddin' is always good after a meal . . . unless it belongs to someone else.

3 out of 5 stars Started out excellent!!.......2007-08-29

This book started out with a great story line but I feel it was all over the place. I think the author combined two books in one,Big Steve's book and Melody's book because there was really no connection between the two but a bunch of unanswered letters. I think the book would have been a lot better had the author centered on a smaller group of people instead of the whole Riverside crack scene, and Prostitutes, and everyone in prison. Mr. Hair good try.

I loved Samuel L. Hair's "Someone Else's Puddin'. Meet hairstylist Melody Pullman who is married to Big Steve Pullman. They were married at a young age and Big Steve falls victim to the streets. Instead of Melody supporting her husband she turns to her married client husband for comfort, financial support and a whole lot of loving. She is playing in dangerous ground. Will she get caught slipping while dipping in someone's else's puddin. You will have to read this book to find out what happens.

4 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) - What's done in the dark..........2007-05-02

While her husband Big Steve is incarcerated hairstylist Melody Pullman, is tired of struggling day in and day out. Under the sage old advice of one of her client's, she is on the lookout for a 'Sugar Daddy'. She found what she's looking for in Larry, the husband of another client. Larry is everything she'd ever wanted in a man. He keeps her bills paid and makes sure her son has everything his little heart desired. Meanwhile, her husband continues pledging his undying love for her in the many unanswered letters she receives. When Melody takes on a second lover, who introduces her to a different lifestyle, the fireworks begin to fly. Will Melody have the strength to endure both relationships, will her new lifestyle land her in big trouble or will her infidelity backfire in her face?

I found SOMEONE ELSE'S PUDDIN' to be a very delightful read; however, the storyline could use a little tweaking. In my opinion, Hair spends way too much time on Big Steve's character, which occasionally shifts the spotlight from Melody's story. The saga between Melody and her two lovers is shocking and fast-paced, leading the way to a surprising and unpredictable ending. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

Book Description

Acknowledged as the outstanding business leader of the late twentieth century, Jack Welch made General Electric one of the world's most competitive companies. This dynamic CEO defined the standard for organizational change, creating more than $400 billion in shareholder value by transforming a bureaucratic behemoth into a nimble, scrappy winner in the global marketplace.

Here, Tichy and Sherman extract the enduring leadership lessons from the revolution Welch wrought at GE. Of these, the most essential is the limitless power of learning. Leadership has its mysteries, but it is a skill that anyone can acquire and enhance. Above all, great leaders select great people and lure them into an endless process of learning and adaptation.

Jack Welch's Six Rules

  1. Control your destiny or someone else will.
  2. Face reality as it is, not as it was, or as you wish it were.
  3. Be candid with everyone.
  4. Don't manage, lead.
  5. Change before you have to.
  6. If you don't have a competitive advantage, don't compete.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Reads like a fiction with Jack Welch as the Hero.......2005-10-02

Hero worship this book is without shame. Sure, the book calls Jack Welch an "As***le" but it is spoken as a compliment. This highly antagonistic, argumentative, determined, intelligent, and energetic hero is indeed a first class "As***le" without apologies. He is the consummate proof that one needs to be an excellent "As***le" to be considered as a great CEO\manager. If you are one of the nice guys who wants to be gentle, cheerful, and sympathetic to your 80+hr/week working employees, forget it, you can't be a successful manager at GE. You need to be like Jack, and take all the credit for the hard work your underlings, and if any of them complain, you kick their fatass during their review which you are required to cut at least 5% of your staff.

Be a tough, bottom-line demanding, reality driven, confrontation seeking, slave driving, and kick assing manager. Otherwise, you will get your butt kicked by other first class manager\as***les. This is the primary lesson of "Control your destiny or someone else will".

On the business side, I found Jack's view on competitiveness ("if you don't have competitive advantage, don't compete") and productivity (productivity is the engine that drives profitability, job security, competitiveness, and higher pay) quite refreshing.

2 out of 5 stars The title is somewhat misleading........2005-04-04

This is maybe a 4 Star book - IF, and ONLY if, this is the first book on Jack Welch and GE you have picked up. If you have already read "Jack" skip it. There is nothing here that hasn't already been said elsewhere. I was disappointed how little "new" information was presented in this book.

If you are looking for something on the topic of controlling your own destiny this title is somewhat misleading.

4 out of 5 stars Decent read, lessons to be learned........2004-04-04

This book looks dauntingly thick when you pick it up, but some brief exploration will show that including the interviews only 311 pages are the Jack Welch story-- the rest of the book is Afterword, GE Timeline, GE Shareholder Reports, Bibliography and finally a section meant to be applied to your own business. I suppose that there are readers out there who wanted that level of completeness in their history of GE. I did not. I stopped reading after the afterword.

The book covers GE during the period of Jack Welch's reign. Specifically, it charts his efforts in five major initiatives: Services, Six Sigma, Digitization, Succession, and the Honeywell acquisition.

I found it interesting and readable, although I was left with the feeling (despite the author's best efforts) that these were very difficult achievements to duplicate if you did not happen to be Jack Welch. Although ostensibly a business biography, I still had much more of a feel of personality than facts when I was done. I would have been pleased to have a less broad-ranging treatment which delved a little bit more deeply into some specific numbers and consequences. Although this information might have been contained in the investor reports, I had no patience to page through it and find the information.

4 out of 5 stars An educational, yet entertaining, read.......2001-12-19

I came into this book assuming a book on the history of Jack Welch's early years with GE. It ended up being much more and I was pleasantly surprised at the overall educational value of the book.

The book is broken down into three "acts" which recount the years of Jack Welch - when and how he was made the CEO with GE, the early years of layoffs, the early resistance to his ideas, reorganization of GE, the need for globalization, and eventual acceptance of his ideas as he empowered GE's employees. Welch's ideas of empowering the employee encompassed such things as "boundarylessness", strong values, leadership, simplicity, and productivity. As the book progresses, the reader is provided with the real world GE examples that qualified Jack's ideas and their results. Nor does the book hold back from describing Jack's missteps and describes the lessons learned.

Overall the book was a good read. The examples read as stories that both entertain and educate. Welch's ideas, as presented in Control Your Destiny, are probably now considered common sense business practices. The ideas seem simple today, yet were revolutionary for that time as you'll read.

The end of the book provides a manual that can be used to carry out a similar revolution with your business and employees. I didn't really work my way through it - it seemed more appropriate for larger organizations.

Book Description

Someone Else's Yesterday is an amazing journey through the eyes of two people: one a Georgian, the other a Connecticut Yankee. Similarities between the two go far beyond coincidence. They think alike, look alike, and even share facial scars. Their lives are so intertwined that they appear to be one. Half of this equation, Jeffrey J. Keene, is a present-day Assistant Fire Chief in affluent Westport, Connecticut. The other half, John B. Gordon, Confederate General, Army of Northern Virginia, died January 9, 1904.

These elements came together at a Halloween party in 1992, leading to a 10-year odyssey including the battlefields of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia as well as the library of the University of Georgia and the Library of Congress. Gathering information from official records, wartime reports and even love letters, Jeff Keene uncovered many parallels between his own life and that of General Gordon. Even the trip to the emergency room on his thirtieth birthday with facial pain had mimicked the wound General Gordon received at the battle of Antietam when he was thirty years of age.

Jeff Keene shares his insights into the workings of reincarnation along with his personal encounter with the nightmare of September 11th. Experience a city in mourning during the aftermath of the attack on the World Trade Center, from a touching eulogy delivered by Mayor Giuliani to the smoldering ruins at Ground Zero.

Share the struggles of the past and the hopes for tomorrow as Keene weaves a tapestry of mystery and history, of love and the horrors of war. Jeffrey Keene has no choice but to believe in reincarnation--he lived this remarkable story and every word is true.

5 out of 5 stars A very touching and vivid account.......2007-09-22

Mr. Jeff Keene had provided his own past life in a way understandable and as historically accurate as possible to his earlier life as a CSA General John B. Gordon. There were some very touching places in his story which literally brought tears to my eyes like the following -
(1) The place where he explains about the spontaneous feeling of sadness he felt when he stood next to his daughter's grave from his previous life and who had passed off when quite young even before ever being named.
(2) The place where he very humbly stays behind thinking of himself as quite junior when compared to other army commanders on the lines before being called by General Hancock during Grant's funeral to lead the funeral procession alongside him in the front lines.
(3) The place where he vividly reminisces his past life incident when he saved the life of the Federal Division Commander Francis Barlow.
On the whole the author comes through as a very great gentleman and one worthy of emulation in both of his forms as Gen Gordon as well as the current Fire Chief Jeff Keene.
May God provide him all prosperity in the present and the yonder!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best reincarnation books ever written........2007-08-22

What more can I say. I have read many books on this subject, and there are many of them out there, but this I must say is the best ever. It takes you from the very start of his search to present day. If you are looking for your own past lives, this book can help you. It gives you ideas of how and where you can start looking for yourself. It lets you know how a journey of this type can affect your present life, good and bad. It also lets you know how past lives influances the thoughts, actions and memories you have today, even your dreams. I could not put this book down from the moment I started reading it, till I was finished with it. It takes alot for someone to come forward like this and share what they went through, and I must say thank you to Jeffrey for doing so. Martin Huffman

5 out of 5 stars An unforgetable read........2007-07-18

From the time I received this book I couldn't put it down. It is a must read for history buffs as well as for those who are interested in reencarnation.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Story...Life Changing.......2007-06-11

I had seen Jeff Keene's story on Sci-Fi and A&E, and I was floored by the amount of details and facts concerning the link between Keene and General Gordon. Not only is this story one of amazing discovery, but it's one of humanity. It seems we are all connected.

If you are a hardcore, analytical and rational person - you will devour all the facts and details. If you are spiritual already, you will walk away with confirmation and awareness.

5 out of 5 stars I'm convinced!.......2006-12-25

I read this book in the summer and have since passed it on to two friends. I saw Mr. Keene on TV passing a lie detector test. I was intrigued by his story and wanted to know more. Even now, six months after I read the book, I still believe every word he says. No doubts have creeped in. If you are reading this you are interested in reincarnation. Buy the book you will love it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.....that seems to be the culture in many organisations. Left to themselves, people will ignore warnings of danger and scorn opportunities to change early and with minimum of pain. This book relates how the cultural phenomenon was changed in General Electric (GE), one of America's largest and highly successful blue-chip corporation. This transformation or change revolution was brought about by the never-ending energy of its CEO, Jack Welch. The book successfully highlights some of Welch's thoughts and key considerations as he went about revolutionising GE. The book contains some valuable lessons for all managers who are attempting to drive change in their respective organisations.

Nancy has created combination resource/workbook for all of those who have struggled with 'losing themselves' when in a relationship with a partner, parent, child, friend or co-worker. Any who have benefited from classic co-dependency books such as "Co-dependent No More", by Melody Beatty, "Women Who Love Too Much" by Robin Norcross, "Getting Them Sober" by Toby Rice Drews, or "Facing Co-Dependency" by Pia Melody, will find Nancy's book a step-by-step method to put what you have learned to work, and apply it specifically to your situation. "Disentangle" is written from Nancy's wisdom gleened from years as a therapist, as well as personal experience in her own relationships. It is organized in bite-sized chunks which keep the reader from becoming confused or overwhelmed, yet it is chock-ful of information. I have found it more user-friendly than most self-help books, and I recommend it to other therapists as a resource for clients. Its also a great supplement to a 12-step program! Thanks for this great addition to relationship resources, Nancy!

In this detailed history of race relations between blacks and whites in the post-civil rights era, Tamar Jacoby looks at how the ideal of integration has fared since it was first advocated by Martin Luther King, Jr. Blacks have made enormous economic, political, and social progress, and yet integration remains an elusive goal. Jacoby, an experienced journalist whose narrative is well-written and easy to follow, examines the experiences of three cities: Atlanta, Detroit, and New York. She looks at how each has dealt with major racial controversies since the 1960s, including Black Power, racial preferences, and busing. Jacoby considers integration a worthy goal, but criticizes many of the means society has used to reach it. "Devising new strategies will not be easy, but history can guide us, if we know how to listen," she writes. Someone Else's House is perhaps the finest historical account of race relations in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. --John J. Miller

    Book Description

Whatever became of Dr. King's dream-the vision of a single, shared community to which both blacks and whites would feel they belong?

In this detailed history of relations between blacks and whites in the post-civil rights era, journalist Tamar Jacoby looks at how the ideal of integration has fared since it was first advocated by Martin Luther King, Jr., arguing that though blacks have made enormous economic, political, and social progress, a true sense of community has remained elusive. Her story leads us through the volatile world of New York in the 1960s, the center of liberal idealism about race; Detroit in the 1970s, under its first black mayor, Coleman Young; and Atlanta in the 1980s and '90s, ruled by a coalition of white businessmen and black politicians. Based on extensive research and local reporting, her vivid, dramatic account evokes the special flavor of each city and decade, and gives voice to a host of ordinary individuals struggling to translate a vision into a reality.

"If you can't call a black thug a thug, you're a racist." Newsweek reporter Tamar Jacoby poses the kind of questions that makes well-meaning white liberals flinch. But it is these people, I think, she is trying to prod to finish the work their forebears began so well.

The Civil Rights movement of the 1960s accomplished so much that by the early '70s the goal seemed in sight. Jim Crow was dead, and it must have seemed that one more push would bring America to racial equality.

And we've been stalled on the edge of that dream for more than 30 years now. Busing was a deadly wrong turn. Nothing much since then has panned out. Jacoby wonders if we haven't abandoned the dream altogether. What would Martin Luther King make of our fetish for "diversity" and "multiculturalism"? Can we claim to be honoring his legacy, which had integration (of hearts and minds as well as bodies) as its goal, while we chant new mantras of separationism?

In America today there's bitter resentment against what is seen as "special treatment." About half of whites tell pollsters "blacks could do better if they tried harder."

"Just what accounts for this new resentment is not easy to untangle," writes Jacoby, "but it is not always the same as out-and-out bigotry. A white man who thinks a black woman on welfare should get a job may in fact be responding to her color, voicing an ugly and unthinking assumption about black attitudes toward work. Or he may be reacting to something he didn't like in the racial rhetoric of recent decades: the claim that white society is responsible for the problems blacks face. Thirty-five years of color-coded conflict have taken a huge toll on both sides, and fairly or not the showdown has left many whites embittered. Their feelings may be an obstacle to harmony, but they are not necessarily prejudice in the conventional sense."

What have we learned? Jacoby writes, "...integration will not work without acculturation." This is the kind of suggestion that makes a lot of people squirm. Many blacks don't like the idea of adopting a set of values from outside. A lot of whites can empathize with that."

But, as Jacoby writes, "That's part of why we couldn't win the War on Poverty: when it turned out that it required extensive acculturation -- programs to change people's habits, their attitudes toward school, work and the law -- many otherwise well-meaning whites lost the will to fight the battle. For more than thirty years, we tried to ignore the development gap, and those who dared to mention it were written off as bigots. But the difficult truth remains that people who cannot speak standard English or have never seen anyone hold down a regular job have little hope of fitting into the system or sharing its fruits. If anything, the past few decades have taught us that the preparation gap is wider than we thought, and more needs to be done than we ever imagined: everything from getting poor mothers into prenatal care to teaching job applicants about deferring to a boss's authority. What makes this hard is that acculturation is a long, slow process -- one that will require a kind of patience till now largely lacking on race matters."

Jacoby's ultimate tough question is this: Should we work to reconcile ethnicity with citizenship, or the other way around? In 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. offered us a choice: "chaos or community." Which are we choosing?

4 out of 5 stars What Went Wrong.......2001-08-31

In ýSomeone Elseýs House,ý Tamar Jacoby lucubrates on many of the root problems that plague racial relations in America today. Wisely, she limits her scope within this vast arena to Black--White affiliations and geographically, she confines the effort to a comparison of New York City, Detroit, and Atlanta. Most of the trouble she discusses can be traced back to giving unmitigated credence to blatantly stupid ideas.
Each cityýs section devotes ample time to one of the metropolisý long serving mayors. In New York City, John Lindsey is portrayed as an impeccably intentioned, dedicated public servant encumbered with an overwhelming streak of naiveté. Based on mountains of evidence, nobody can question his sincere commitment to racial reconciliation or to improving the quality of life for black citizens too long held back by endemic discrimination, but the vagaries he chose to rectify the situation severely compounded the situation. By listening to the loudest black radicals, rather than the intelligent but more tempered individuals, (tragically initiating a trend that has accelerated until today) genuine progress was sacrificed to attempt unobtainable placation. Ms. Jacoby does not lay all the blame at NYCýs charismatic mayorýs feet; indeed there was plenty to go around. The White House, the all-powerful Ford Foundation, the psittacine major media, and a host of other allegedly liberal players either shared Lindseyýs unreasonable hopes or postulated that appeasement would be far easier to deliver than improvement.
Detroit is shown as a failure in every regard and much of the blame goes directly to the cityýs entrenched Mayor Coleman Young. He is limned as a racist/separatist who advanced the most radical elements of the ýBlack Powerý movement. While spuriously claiming to have the best interests of their fellow black citizens at heart, Mayor Young and these thugs he countenanced made life a living hell for honest lower class back citizens. His open hostility to whites drove many business out of town leaving scores of unemployed poor black people behind with no way to reach the jobs in the suburbs. By declaring war on his own police department, he empowered criminals, and while a majority of perpetrators may have been black, so was a substantial majority of the victims. Sadly, even though Coleman Youngýs near-eternal reign finally came to a close, Detroit still has not been able to put all its pieces back together, and long smoldering racial tensions remain strained.
Atlanta is clearly shown to be the most successful of the three profiled cities; yet it comes across as far from a model of harmonious interracial coexistence. Mayor Andrew Young lacked the hateful separatism of Detroitýs Young and displayed a firmer grasp of reality than New Yorkýs Lindsey; still he strayed from Martin Luther Kingýs dream and implemented dubious racial counting. After a decade of affirmative action, Ms. Jacoby documents how little concrete progress was made. She also adequately evaluates the damage done by this well-meaning problem. She writes of the resentment toward those who achieved status or jobs based soley on skin color. She discusses the defeatism that afflicted many blacks who knew that their qualifications were not the source of their success or some case not even of interest to their employers. Most interestingly, she recounts fraudulent cases of alleged black companies that served as fronts for dishonest white businessmen and provides evidence that a handful of black companies reaped the vast majority of affirmative action's spoils.
If the tome has a drawback it plods on occasion. The 600+ page work would probably have been enhanced by a 100 page edit--at least half of which should have come from the Atlanta section. Considerable information about the cityýs leap forward since the mid-1980s was interesting but not directly relevant.
While maintaining impressive objectivity throughout the historical reporting, Ms. Jacoby obviously has a firmly help point of view on race relations, and at no time does she attempt to obfuscate her convictions. She closes with a series of common sense recommendations and truthfully advocates acculturation, mentoring, and a valuing of individuality over group labeling. While most proponents of these proven techniques are conservatives who generally defensively suggest them while fighting to prove they are not racists, Ms. Jacobyýs overall political leanings are not on display here. She is to be commended for unapologetically putting forth such ideas. There is nothing racist about calling upon everyone to do his her or best, and giving one his or her own identity is more respectful than herding people together into some artificial category. While these opinions may appear revolutionary and controversial today, Tamar Jacoby is not the first person to call for judging people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and honest.......2001-07-24

To summarize, Tamar Jacoby's book is compelling and blatantly honest. Perhaps it is too honest for some people to handle. Race relations and the successes and failures of public policy were analyzed in several US cities. Having grown up in the NY area, I found her take on NY incidents to be insightful and brutallly candid

2 out of 5 stars Putting politics aside..........2000-07-11

    ...this book was dissapointing.

It tries to be a complication of three "case studies" in racial harmony: New York, Detroit, and Atlanta. While it is surprising that someone who worked for the New York Times (on the editorial page, no less!) would write a book that highlights the failure of liberal policy to further the cause of racial harmony, it lacks cohesiveness & depth. It reads like a bunch of daily newspaper articles loosely stitched together--no foresight, no hindsight. There are detailed accounts of the day-by-day happenings of important events, but very little effort is given to tying these events into the big picture. Indeed, there were times I got very frustrated, because she would take 25-50 pages to explain an event in excruciating detail, then wrap it up with some statement like "But this event wasn't very important anyways."

There are no proper notations, either. The citations are just listed in the appendix, with a general page reference. This is a real shortcoming, as you never know whether or not a given statement will have a citation. If you're using this book for secondary research, beware!

Lastly, there are occasions where the author either contradicts herself, or appears to contradict herself with an ambiguous statement.

My opinion is that the author was well-intentioned, and this is an important subject, but the book fell victim to very poor editting. If more time and effort had been spent in making the book flow better, have greater depth, proper citations, and fewer errors, it (would have been) a lot better.

    5 out of 5 stars Detroit Explained.......2000-07-10

Growing up in Detroit in the 1970's, I had no concept of what a suburb was until some of my friends started moving out of the city. Their parents moved there primarily for the better schools. Once I started visiting them, I begin to wonder why everything out there was so nice and new, while things in the city were so run down and increasingly blighted. This book provides the best description I've ever read of the events that led to Detroit's demise. I encourage anyone who's interested in the problems of urban America to read this book.

      Book Description

"What if a man gain the whole world and lose his own soul?" asks one of the great spiritual masters. What is the price one pays for compromising his or her boundaries in order to maintain status quo? The price is immeasurable, for the loss of one's boundaries leads to the loss of one's self.

This book is for the openhearted and sensitive soul who is prone to losing his or her boundaries in relationships. Others may easily hurt this individual. Such a person may have difficulty expressing true feelings because of the fear that others will react negatively towards them. They may be afraid that if they speak their truth, others will become angry and abandon them, criticize, judge, invalidate or send them on a guilt trip. As a result, "self" or soul of this person may be imprisoned by dependency on others and the fear of how others may react. If this describes you, HOW TO GROW A SECOND SKI FOR YOUR SOUL may offer the help you need to emancipate your soul. This book can help guide you through the process of the development of healthy boundaries so that you become solid within your "self." In short, this book may be just the tonic you need to set yourself free to live fully, perhaps for the very first time.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book.......2006-12-06

This is a book that I request many of my new psychotherapy clients to read, as it has proved powerful enough to transform many of my clients' lives.

So many people long for help to outgrow unhealthy family relationships, yet they don't know how. Ordinarily, for most people, such relationships repeat throughout their life-cycle and this can be seen in painful interactions they have may have with critical or controlling bosses, envious or competitive co-workers, unfaithful or hurtful partners.

Employing both evocative analogies and practical real-life examples, Dr. Burgess sheds light on what comprises healthy relationships by characterizing individuals as "yes", "no" or "maybe' categories of people. It is through the use of this unique paradigm that she helps readers to begin to identify and avoid hurtful others (or alternatively to protect themselves in interactions with such people when they cannot be avoided). She also encourages readers to reconsider before appealing to others who are consistently withholding or disrespectful, those whom she refers to as "dry wells."

Such a book empowers readers to such a great extent that when they are done, they are able to heal and actually move beyond the narcissitic wounding they experienced in their family of origin. In this way, they find, perhaps for the first time in their lives, a means to steer clear of unhealthy relationships. Moreover, they not only find themselves in a better position to access their own greater intuition, but also to pursue the life goals that are truly right for them.

5 out of 5 stars Better and cheaper than therapists!.......2006-09-01

So good I cant put it down. One morning I read one chapter that explained so much to me, I felt so product I went back to bed for a few hours. Many of my friends claim to have answers for some of the gliches in my personality; and they are actually therapists- they are each getting a copy of this book because it had more anwers for me than them combined :-) Enjoy!

      5 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING!!!!.......2006-08-05

This books is truly amazing and lifechanging because it helps one to see the clearer picture. Someone once said insanity is "doing something over and over again expecting to get different results." A majority of my life I was a people pleaser, especially trying to please no-category people (read the book for the definition of yes-no-maybe category people). This book has been very validating for me because I was able to change my perspective. No longer do I have to go around quenching my anger. I can express my feelings in a helpful manner and stay neutral - that's where the power is - in neutrality. I've been empowered to live a richer life by using some of the techniques in the book. And looking at my life now, I'm surrounded by higher vibrating people. No longer am I a mad woman, expecting to get different results by doing the same thing. I've tried a different approach (thanks to the author) and my life is a wonderful reflection of my new mindset. Woohoo:-)

5 out of 5 stars A Comforting Way of Handling Interpersonal Relationships.......2006-07-18

This is a book I have close at hand. When I am upset about personal relationships, I reread sections. Dr. Burgess explains how depression and poor coping skills originate and gives exercises for initiating the healing process within ourselves. Dr. Burgess teaches forgiveness of ourselves and others. That is always comforting to me -- that I can heal myself without condemning another person.

5 out of 5 stars good source for hurting hearts.......2005-10-13

This book gave me good tactics to counteract negative people in my life and helped me get through some rough patches with some individuals. I realized it's okay to have a sensitive heart but also how to protect it from negative individuals that are likely to invalidate/hurt me.
