Book Description

What seems like just a common, no-harm-done excuse-"It's not my fault!"-is often a dangerous trap, say Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend, because people don't recognize what the blaming mindset does to them. It not only keeps them from overcoming the effects of all that they can't control-like other people, circumstances and genetics-but separates them from a solution. And when they give away the ownership of their life, they end up losing the one opportunity they have to fulfill their dreams and enjoy God's best. Using eight principles, a variety of true stories and their years of experience as professional psychologists, Cloud and Townsend enlighten readers on how to make empowering choices-and how to build the life they want to live. It may seem impossible but it's true: taking personal responsibility is not only liberating, it is the best-and perhaps the only-way for a person to get what they really want out of life.

5 out of 5 stars Solves the Problem!.......2007-09-12

I don't think I realized I was making excuses. After all, I had many VALID REASONS for my poor performance in many areas. But this book helped me immensely to understand that even when I have valid reasons (and sometimes invalid ones) there is still only one way to solve the problem, and that is to tackle it head on. This book gave me lots of useful, easy to understand tools for overcoming long-standing difficulties. Since I read the book last February, I've lost 25 pounds, improved my career, my parenting, and have begun making progress in many other areas which have proven difficult for me for years. I love this book and actually, I've already read it three times!

3 out of 5 stars It's Not My Fault: The No-Excuse Plan for Overcoming Life's Obstades.......2007-05-09

I was a little hesitant about this book when I was first told about it. I mean really "It's Not My Fault" was not my motto in life, but a good friend had read it and shared that it would be good read for me. After reading just the first few chapters I realized that many of the things I blamed (not realizing I was blaming) on my childhood, teachers, even my pastors were things that I could change now for myself and stop this blaming game. I really think everyone should read this book, be it for yourself or to better understand those around you it is a win-win read.

Book Description

An eleven-year-old boy named Robert voices typicaland not so typicalmiddle-grade concerns in this unique, memorable collection of hilarious poems. His musings cover the usual stuff, like pizza, homework, thank-you notes, and his annoying older sister. In addition, he speculates about professional wrestling for animals, wonders why no one makes scratch-and-sniff fart stickers, designs the ultimate roller coaster (complete with poisonous spiders), and deconstructs the origins of a new word, snarpy. A playful layout and ingenious graphics extend the wry humor that is sure to resonate with readers of all ages.

I got this for my son, and he enjoys its offbeat teenage humor. I enjoy that he is seeing reading and writing presented in a different way.

4 out of 5 stars Technically, It's Pretty Darn Good.......2006-01-15

I bought this book to review for a grad. course on children's library services and, thanks to the clever cover, was smiling before I even opened the book. Cute, light ... no serious complaints here.

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT book!.......2004-12-06

My kids grew up reading "Where the sidewalk ends", by Shel Silverstein. Anyone who enjoyed that book will love "Technically, It's Not My Fault"! It's absolutely amazing! John has crafted some of the wittiest poems into the cutiest "concrete forms" imaginable. You have to see them to appreciate them. Don't think poetry. Think more like an ornery 11 year old boy's view of the world! Considering the low price on this book, there's no excuse for any child growing up to not have this book! Buy it. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars funny and smart and true........2004-12-01

I love this book -- not only is it funny and totally nails the 11-year-old boy experience, it is also in a format (concrete poetry) that is user-friendly and may well encourage readers to write concrete poems of their own.

I gave away my copy and now need to buy another one!

It's Not My Fault is a self-help audiobook written by psychologists Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend, about the power of taking responsibility for one's decisions and actions. Applying eight critical principles, heart-touching true stories, and their years of experience, Cloud and Townsend teach the listener how to empower himself or herself and earn progress toward goals in work, relationships, and life itself. An upbeat guide to breaking the self-destructive habit of blame-shifting and false excuses, highly recommended. 6 CDs, 7.6 hours, unabridged.

Book Description

When accidents happen to Murdley Gurdson, they are usually his own fault, but when a bird lays an egg on Murdley's head one day, he tries hard to find someone else to blame.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation of causation and connectivity.......2003-07-17

This book is ajshort and readable story that starts with new too big shoes, one of which goes awry. The story is very readable and comfortable, language is easy for young kids, the story develops a pattern that is recognizable and funny. This book teaches the concepts of causation, that is, one thing leads to another, and connectivity between events. At the end, blameworthiness is discarded with a show of empathy for the main character and a comforting activity.

Excellent book.

3 out of 5 stars It Wasnýt My Fault.......2003-03-11

This is a funny story that will keep you guessing until the end. Whose fault was it that caused the bird to lay an egg on Murdley Gurdson's head? Was it Murdley's fault or the other animal's fault? The story continues on and is very funny. The ending may seem confusing but will only be obvious if you read the whole story. So until then you can only go by what I have written.

5 out of 5 stars This book is full of smiles.......2001-12-06

I know a 5 year old boy who ask to read this story all the time. It's a funny story about a chain of events caused by a little boy ,that affect alot of animals but in the end they all forgive Murdley Gurdson and help him to feel better about making a mistake. The pictures are cute, the story interesting and just the right length to be fun. Sure to put a smile on the face of adults and childern alike.

4 out of 5 stars It Wasn't My Fault.......2000-05-23

Murdley Gurdson suddenly has an egg laid on his head. The bird claims "it wasn't my fault...". Murdley and his new-found friends discover a humerous chain of events that led to the egg on Murdley's head.

My daughter loved the illustrations and discovering how a simple chain of events can seriously impact your life. This book started quite a conversation on how we are ultimately responsible for what we do.

The book was humerous and fun to read.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for first graders!.......2000-05-22

I am a first grade teacher. This year, I decided to implement book study groups in my classroom. I used second graders as readers and facilitators. My first graders got to choose the books that were then read to them. This book was a favorite. From the dialogue to the illustrations, there was plenty for my students to smile at and discuss. A great book choice.

    DO YOU EVER WONDER...

    * Why your otherwise well-behaved hair is always a disaster on school picture day?

    * Why there is always ONE piece missing from the puzzle you've been working on for weeks?

    * Why the pretzels at the bottom of the bag are ALWAYS smashed to smithereens?

The answers to these and other questions are revealed in The Snack Smasher. Andrea Perry and Alan Snow expose a bevy of mischievous creatures who are out to wreak havoc in kids' lives. Just in time, too -- the Wicked Waitress, the Locker Destroyer, and the Ink Drinkers are all eagerly waiting to strike....

5 out of 5 stars Three Silly Chicks Review.......2007-10-02

Reviewed by Three Silly Chicks - Readers, Writers, and Reviewers of funny books for kids.

The Three Silly Chicks are so relieved. We finally understand why we sometimes have bad hair days. No, it's not our hair--it's those awful Scary-Hair-Fairies! We're also relieved to learn that we are not going crazy (contrary to popular belief). There really are Ink Drinkers, thirsty and sly, who sip our ink when we're not looking. And, well, we just knew we didn't snore. It's those dastardly Snorists, of course! The Chicks certainly don't snore.

This zany poetry collection is all about the pesky hobgoblins who create havoc in our lives. We think students will have a great time coming up with their own monsters. What about that big goon who lives in the washing machine and eats our socks? What a pain he is. Or how about the mischievous imp who steals our car keys whenever we're late? That guy needs a name.

    5 out of 5 stars Smashing indeed!.......2007-09-17

Andrea Perry has done it again! Her latest delectable confection serves up a bevy of baddies, responsible for irksome dirty deeds. My children (ages 8 and 3) went crazy for the creeps who drink ink, eat puzzle pieces and create henious hairdos for school pictures. Mrs. Perry's passion for poetry is obvious, and helps instill a love for rhyme in even the youngest readers. In my house, we're devouring The Snack Smasher---and rather impatiently awaiting the next poetic ponderings from the mind of Andrea Perry!

    5 out of 5 stars A Smashing Good Time!.......2007-05-17

With a name like that, how could you not want to pick this up and browse through it. The kids picked this out based on the title alone, so I was surprised when we cracked it open and found it was poems. Luckily that was a delightful surprise! In The Snack Smasher and Other Reasons Why it's Not My Fault the author reveals the why to question that plague almost all children...why is my hair a disaster on picture day, why is there inevitably one puzzle missing from the box, and why the pretzels at the bottom are always crushed to pieces. This is a fun read and great for kids to practice reading out loud...these would make fun oral presentations for kids working on memorizing because of the way the poems are divided, it's a good way to challenge kids to figure out how it's meant to be read aloud. Readers here won't just be delighted with the poems, the illustrations are quite interesting too, really helping to bring to life the villains and mischievous creatures that lurk within these pages! The Snack Smasher would made an ideal read aloud, or as stated before...a fine project for memorization and oral presentation. I give this 5 stars for being plain old fun with great illustrations and a even a chance to expand young readers vocabulary!

I most strongly relate to Grandma Rose and inter-inlaw relations with Grandma Myrna, yet am not too old to relate to Ruthie. This strip is the first thing I read each morning, yet the book is a well-thumbed reference on my reading table. I quote everyone in the family liberally, so don't start with me - I have Mace in my pocketbook!

Anyone who has little girls now will tell you sugar and spice are out..its mud and mischief for the 90's and beyond! Great to see the old stereotype crumbling. Except for Charles Schultz "lucy" most little girls in comic strips have been portrade the same way....Mostly sugar and spice and everything nice! HA! Thanks for reading NT

    5 out of 5 stars Ruthie rules!.......1999-01-03

Ruthie is in the tradition of Little Lulu,Annie, and Krazy Kat, if you think of her as a girl. Funny, silly, deceptive and subversive, she's hard not to like if you can appreciate a complicated woman. You'll wish she was your childhood sweetheart, even when she's lying outright, making up the most childish nonsense, or just being Ruthie. Not as brilliant as Calvin and Hobbes, but One Big Happy will do.

5 out of 5 stars This book is One Big Happy Read!!!!!!!.......1999-01-03

All of this fun is definitely Rick Detorie's fault. Like his "Should I Spit on Him?", "None of this fun is my Fault" is a fantastic collection of "One Big Happy" moments not to be missed by anyone. As a father of three, I can only say that Rick Detorie has hit the proverbial nail on the head. All of the One Big Happy family is represented, from Frank and Ellen, to Rose and Nick, even Myrna makes an appearence, but this book belongs to Joe and Ruthie and their wonderful view of everyday life. It is said, "Out of the mouth of babes, oft time come gems", from Rick Detorie's Joe and Ruthie we get a veritable "Tiffany's". If you are lucky enough to have "One Big Happy" in your daily newspaper, you will understand how this book can be reviewed so highly. If not, than this book is a must just to see what you're missing. If you have grown up anywhere in America, over the last 40 or so years, there are parts in this book that will have you laughing out loud and nodding at the reality of it all. The rating is 5 stars only because the rating system goes no farther.

      Book Description

Written from the perspective of the schoolyard, this simply illustrated tale stimulates thought on issues of responsibility. When the classmates of a young boy who has been bullied all deny blame for the incident, they offer many common excuses why they declined to step in on their peer's behalf. The familiar, first-person narration of the young characters begs the question, Does it really have nothing to do with me? The story closes with a series of powerful images of global strife, making the connection between simply not stepping in to help someone and standing by while wider atrocities go on.

1 out of 5 stars Ego-filled life of Nick Bolletierri.......2006-02-07

This has got to be the worst tennis book I have ever read. I've sat in on one of Nick's presentations at national symposiums, and it was such a waste of time. Like the book, he spends more time talking about how great he is and just because he's had some success luring top juniors who eventually made it big into his tennis training facility at the NBTA, this guy actually thinks he's helped them all reach the top of the game. The book totally shows what kind of a person he is, an egotistical weasel who takes credit for everything. He talks about his "elite pros" that eventually leave with his supposed prize students. I wonder why. It doesn't take a genius to figure out who really helps you out. He belittles Brad Gilbert, among many, but he's perhaps the best coach out there right now. To top it all off, this guy's been married at least five million times and he should be ashamed of himself for even mentioning this in the book. He admits to having a "friendly" relationship with his ex wives, but he makes marriage seem like just a walk in the park--kind of like "wham bam, thank you maam" attitude. But I do not recommend this book at all. It's horrible. I got to about Chapter 3 before I threw it away. What a waste of 8 bucks that one was. However, I do recommend the books Brad Gilbert wrote, especially Winning Ugly.

      3 out of 5 stars Bollettieri Serves..........2005-10-14

Works better as a gosippy tell-all on the early lives of the players his brutal boot camp helped make famous than it does as anything else. At times Bolletteri's ego speaks a little too loudly and the pace of the book bogs down because of things like the printing of letters he wrote to his one-time students. The man many consider the greatest tennis coach of all time admits here that those who charged he pushed teenagers too far too fast in pursuit of champions, were probably right. He tells some funny stories, like one about Andre Agassi having a collection of empty whiskey bottles in his room, even though no one ever saw the teen drinking and he was monitered almost around the clock as part of the regimented curriculum: a mystery to this day. I used to imagine what it would be like at this famous camp but after reading this book I was so turned off by the military school-like atmosphere described that I'm glad imagining is all I ever did. I guess the jury will always be out on Nick Bollettieri's role in the rise to fame of so many of those who spent time at his Florida center. Some like Mary Pierce credit Bollettieri with making them their best; others downplay their former coach's contribution. This is Nick Bollettieri's chance to put in his two-cents worth, and he does...or maybe it's more like a dollar's worth.

      1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2002-12-12

I had no interested in reading the letters he wrote to all his players.. boring. I wanted to read anecdotes etc from his life.. from his interaction with players etc. All that was missing. Could have been so much better.

      2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2000-11-22

Nick is simply telling you about his life. I expected the book to contain more information on specific tennis knowledge that could help a player improve his game, but I guess Nick does not have any. Or maybe he will not tell you about them unless you enroll in his expensive academy. However, Nick worked hard in his life and that is what you can hear about again, rather than learn, from this book - it takes hard work and dedication to be successful. If you are looking to improve your game, DO NOT buy this book. If you are trying to kill time or want to know more about Nick, buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Nick's story on why he is the center of the tennis universe.......2000-09-01

I must begin this book review by saying I had no opinion of Nick Bollettieri prior to reading this book other than I was aware of who he was, that he had a tennis complex in Florida for young tennis players, and that he coached some the games biggest tennis players. After reading this book, I now feel I know much more about Nick Bollettieri...unfortunately, that is not a good thing.

Initially, I found this book to be only slightly annoying as it focused on "fluff filled" stories centered around Nick Bollettieri and how he "evolved" into a tennis coach. As the book continued, I became increasingly irritated as Nick described in great detail the reason he felt he was the driving force behind the success of Andre Aggasi, Jim Courier, Boris Becker, Monica Seles, etc. In addition, Nick complained about the lack of respect he received from all of these players (i.e. they didn't pay him enough for his total dedication to their careers). In the end, all of these players left Nick and every relationship ended badly with Nick describing in great detail why it wasn't his fault and that the player owed him money.

In summary, if you are looking for a book to learn something about how to play the game of tennis, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for an annoying, long-winded story about a man with an inflated sense of self-importance, you have found the right book.
