Knock 'em Dead.......2007-09-21
This book is a textbook used in my daughter's college class. I don't have particular opinions about the quality of the content, but I do know she was relieved to have the prompt delivery by the vendor.
A very satisfied reader!.......2007-09-15
I've read several books on job interviewing preparation, my favorite being Win 'Em Over! Get Hired!: Job Interviews That Produce Job Offers and this book, Knock 'Em Dead. Both authors (Martin Yate and Irv Jasinski) are experts in their field with heavy HR and consulting backgrounds in business and industry. Their approaches are similar but from different perspectives. Reading both, I feel I've gotten the best of both worlds. I owe the great job and salary offer I received to both gentlemen. Thanks fellas!
An indispensable resource for job-seekers.......2007-06-21
I'm a pretty intelligent guy, but I'm not a very effective speaker, so I have trouble selling myself. When faced with a personal question that I'm not expecting, I often find it difficult to compose an answer on the spot and deliver it without stumbling over my words, and without awkward pauses as I search for the best way to phrase something. I also don't have much experience with how the business world works. Hence, as recently as a few weeks ago, a job interview seemed like the stuff of nightmares.
Thankfully, I found this book. Its comprehensive advice is as useful as it is easy to understand, for every aspect of the job search. Knock 'em Dead answered my questions about how to identify the best job opportunities, how to craft my letters of introduction to catch an employer's interest, and most importantly, how to handle any interview situation smoothly and confidently. Within an amazingly short time, I got myself a better job than I would have believed possible for someone with my background, and at a better salary than I had hoped for.
Job interviews still make me nervous, but to be honest, it's the anticipation more than the actual process that bothers me now. Once the interview starts, I find myself actually quite comfortable, because I know that I've prepared thoroughly for whatever's coming. Even if you can't necessarily anticipate every last question an interviewer will hit you with, you can certainly come close, and the more prepared you are, the easier it is to deal with the few unknowns.
I don't doubt that I would have been tripped up several times in my job interviews had I not read this book first. With it, I was never unsure of myself, never came out of an interview thinking, "If only I had done this differently." I can't recommend it enough.
Outstanding Book.......2007-06-08
This is a Must Have. If you are in the market for a job or simply checking your marketability, I highly recommend this book. The ideas helped me a great deal and I got a job with the first company I interviewed with.
The ultimate job interview guide.......2007-05-09
About 16 years ago I quitted the first job after my graduation and needed to find a second one fast. Luckily I came across a copy of Knock em Dead in a public library. It really helped. I even (forgive me) photocopied the chapter on answering tough interview questions, which I had kept for years. Recently a friend of mine asked my opinion on how to handle job interviews. Within 24 hours I bought him this and of course, he found it very useful, too. I am obliged to praise it here and give it five stars, which I should have done it years before. In short, a must for any job seeker.
p.s. Below please find some questions with model answers in the book for your consideration.
What are the reasons for your success in this profession?
Why do you want to work here?
What did you like/dislike about your last job?
What is the least relevant job you have held?
How long would you stay with the company?
Describe a difficult problem you've had to dealt with?
How do you handle tension?
Do you have any questions?..........

The Zen of Catholicism, part III.......2007-01-08
As with Dr Biela's other books, it is nearly impossible to find adequate words to describe this one. Still I would give 10 stars if I could to each of his books. Using language that a 21st century reader can grasp, Dr. Biela (who happens to be a Ph.D in Physics!) illuminates the works and thoughts of the great Catholic mystics: St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Faustina Kowalska, etc.
In addition, he vividly elaborates on key New Testament passages: the tax collector's prayer, Mary's accepting to become the "servant of the Lord", the bleached sepulcher, the Samaritan woman at the well, etc. Readers will easily recognize situations in our daily lives where those words are applicable. Just about everyday something I have read in these books comes to mind. You will be surprised to find out what having faith "like a child" actually involves.
Needless to say Dr Biela's series of books has given me a radically different perspective as to what closeness to God means, and how God acts in our lives. Basically, we are nothing and God in us is and does everything. We come to this realization by removing the blinders in our lives which impede us from seeing this truth. Events which appear adverse to us can in fact be God's instrument to remove obstacles that separate us from Him. More than ever I seek to recognize how everything I do and everything that happens to me is God's action. The key impediment is our obstinate arrogance and the only solution is having absolute humility before the Lord.
Readers should be aware, however, these books are written strictly in the context of Catholicism. The sacraments are underscored as conduits of Jesus' action. Mary is exalted as the surest medium to put Jesus in the center of our lives. You will be hard pressed to find a more inspiring ellucidation of these themes than Dr. Biela's.
I could try to go on but, again, any words of mine fall short. This is Dr. Biela's third book, and I sincerely recommend you get all of them and read them in order. I believe that way you will get the most out of them. They are short and can be read quickly, although you probably will feel compelled to take your time and meditate on their message.
Prepare to be overwhelmed.
Gentle Truth.......2005-01-12
What a gift! This book is helping me make sense out of the tensions in my spiritual life. Funny what the Truth can do! In a gentle way, it reminds me that God knows me through and through, so I can quit hiding who I really am and just let myself be loved. For this, I am very thankful.
Fabulous!.......2005-01-07
This book is the nourishment my soul has been hungering for. A must read for anyone longing to be touched by the healing power of God's love.
Wow!.......2005-01-07
I recommend this book to everyone searching for the answer to the questions:What does it mean that God is 'knocking"? How do I know when it is God knocking?..How do I answer His call? This book reminds the reader that God's "knock" is very simple and very powerful, and ALWAYS love! In His mercy , He asks only that we see ourselves as beloved sinners and abandon ourselves to Him as such! How do we do this?...read this beautiful and hope- filled book!
Hope for the hopeless!.......2005-01-06
"...it is also true that you are loved not because of some kind of imaginary perfection or cleanliness of soul, but because you are a child - the Heavenly Father's child. He will always accept you. When you throw yourself into His arms with childlike trust, He will never despise you or abandon you" (pg. 66) This book is helping me to realize more and more the unconditinal love of GOD! I find it extremely helpful for my daily meditation. It is helping me to discover the true meaning of perfection, not the meaning I imposed on myself sense childhood in which I was actually trying to "be GOD" rather than need HIM. The book is sprinkled with deep yet simple and childlike prayers to our LORD. These prayers are very comforting for me because they do not disguise who I am, but help me to be before my GOD in truth. I recommend this book to anyone who is striving for holiness but finding themselves stuck in the muck of the truth that they are sinners...this book will help you see that it is exactly YOU who GOD loves and whose door HE knocks on in every moment!

Great for four year old.......2007-09-14
My brother in law read this book (in a funny voice) to my four-year old son and they were both laughing out loud. What a great introduction to puns. After reading the book, it became a fun car-ride game to make up our own knock-knock jokes.
Great Joke book!.......2007-09-13
Knock Knock Who's There: My First Book Of Knock Knock Jokes
I got this book for my nephew for his 4th birthday and he loves it! It helped him understand the Knock Knock jokes and their car is now filled with cute jokes. He loves it and it's easy to read.
Knock Knock Who's There: My First Book Of Knock Knock Jokes.......2007-08-23
I am very disappointed in this book! I realize it is for a child, but the jokes are horrible. A waste of money. I would not recommend this book for any age.
Adorable!.......2007-04-10
Your kids will love this beautifully illustrated book of knock knock jokes. These jokes will put a smile on anyone's face!
Great.......2007-01-27
If your child is really getting into knock-knock jokes - this is a great book. I just wish it were longer - there are about 8 or so jokes. Very cute though, nice size and paper quality and great graphics.
Book Description
In today's job market, getting to "yes" doesn't mean getting a break. Like most new employees today, you'll probably get thrown into your new position with little or no orientation. You'll have to "sink or swim" in the first 90 days-or face termination.
No worries. Sink or Swim shows you how to be a top performer from day one.
"Everyone starting a new job should have this book under their arm at work, next to their plate at dinner, and under their pillow at night." -Jeffrey Fox, author of the national bestseller, How to Become CEO
With week-by-week charts, and straightforward, no B.S. information, Sink or Swim enables you to decode the company's culture, discern what your priorities should be, and survive and thrive in your first twelve weeks-no matter what industry you're in.
Customer Reviews:
Read This and Refer Back.......2007-08-22
Within the first week of starting my new job at a startup internet company, I came across this book and it made all the difference. Working at a startup can often be disjointed, especially since we didn't have an office to call our own. By incorporating some of the advice in my weekly routines, I created a structure for myself that I continue to follow. The advice was clear, concise and right on.
This is definitely a must-read for anyone starting a new job.
Another 5-star review from SF, jeffnc!.......2007-07-03
Pay no attention to Jeffnc, the bitter reviewer from SC! I live in SF and have no idea who the Sidells are, but this book is fascinating! Follow everything they say week by week,a nd you'll get that "This is going very well" at your 90-day review just like me! What's more, you look not only super organized with this book on your desk, but also super-conscientious....I brought this book into a one on one with the boss, and I cracked the book and said "I'd like to talk about my career goals.." she asked me what the book was...she was impressed!
A Great Resource/Tool.......2007-04-10
"Sink or Swim" is the book that I wish I had when I started in the working world over 18 years ago! It is a simple, step-by-step tool that shows new hires how to "get it right in 12 weeks". The week-by-week approach gives individuals the opportunity to set good habits and strategies that can be applied throughout one's career. This book has been very helpful to me as an HR professional in getting my recent college graduate new hires to better engage with the company and job they accepted within it! I would highly recommend this book.
Mediocre.......2006-12-20
Be knowledgeable about your industry. Be knowledgable about your company. Be knowledgeable about your required job skills. Communicate well with people. Set goals for yourself. Dress like others around you dress. Pretty common sense stuff.
By the way, check out some of the other reviews. It's pretty unusual for any book, especially a one like this, to get all 5 star reviews. Look at the earliest 8 reviews. This is the only review that has been written by each of these 8 reviewers. All written on May 8. Almost all from San Francisco/California (interesting that the company founded by the authors is in San Francisco.) A bunch of people from San Francisco just happened to swarm to Amazon on May 8 to give the book a bunch of 5 star reviews. Interesting.
An Excellent Guide that Came in Handy.......2006-09-25
Let me begin by saying that I started a new job, and before the transition, I bought four books on this same topic. I hoped that between all of them, I would learn everything necessary for my first 3 months at my new job.
After having read all of them, I came to the conclusion that I would have saved some money had I only purchased Sink or Swim. It was by far the most comprehensive, week by week guide about how to start a new job and successfully chart your path within the first three months of your new job.
Some of the sage advice includes simple matters like knowing the right time to speak to your boss, the types of conversations you want to have when first being introduced to your new colleagues. Some of the best advice comes in the form of advice for the reader that helps them present the best possible image to others.
Readable, engaging and formatted in a clear reference style, I highly recommend this for anyone who is starting a new job, or for anyone who wants to start their old job, anew.

Customer Reviews:
This book will help you realize your potential..........2005-10-13
After reading the book 'Says Who?', things that Johnny and I have talked about really came to life for me. I played baseball at the college level, so Johnny and I have many things in common. ...My biggest challenge to this point has been, how do I take the energy and focus that I had as a ball player and bring them over to my career. This book has really opened my eyes and helped me realize the habits and beliefs I had as a player could be refocused into my new career. This book helps you recognize when those bad little negative voices start in and you can then take a step back and re-affirm yourself. This book really has taught me that you can change yourself and the life you live, but you must first change the way you think about yourself. I read this book every morning before I start my day. It is my cup of coffee. I highly recommend this book. It has really opened my eyes and made me see that I can achieve my goals and dreams.
Clear Focus and Direction.......2005-10-12
A book like SAYS WHO? is long overdue. It is full of common sense steps to better enable you to remain focused on your goals, despite your circumstances. There is something to be realized from every chapter. In a few places I felt you were writing a personal book just to me.
Simplistic Waste of Time.......2005-10-11
This book was preachy, simplistic, boring and not helpful. It was neither motivational nor informative but it was a waste of money and my time.

Book Description
Autumn Adams never planned to follow in her mother's footsteps as Chicago's answer to Martha Stewart--she can't cook, doesn't clean, and would rather play soccer than discuss the joys of white bathtub grout. Then some lunatic starts sending her threats in the mail and Audie finds herself under the protection of simmering, sexy Detective Stacey Quinn, a man determined to examine her every nook, cranny, and ex-boyfriend in his effort to find the stalker. A disarming combination of macho cop and sweet charmer, Quinn is hard to resist. But with Audie's bad luck at finding and holding on to Mr. Right, she think it's best to keep her distance....Quinn soon discovers that the real Audie is an alluring blend of fantasy babe and tender-hearted female all wrapped up in what he can only hope is leopard-print underwear. She's not what he's always pictured for himself, but could she be everything he'll ever need?Digging through Audie's many layers could turn out to be the hottest, craziest, sexiest bit of detective work Quinn has ever attempted....if it doesn't kill him first.
Customer Reviews:
For fans of Susan Andersen, Rachel Gibson and Elizabeth Bevarly........2007-08-08
Audie Adams stepped unwillingly into her mother's shoes as Homey Helen, a `Household Hints Queen'. The newspaper column, television appearances and general syndicated business are worth a squillion dollars, and Audie hates every single second of it. She'd rather be out on the soccer field training kids to play, but she promised her murdered mother she'd carry on the tradition. Along comes tall, tough, seasoned Detective Stacey Quinn, ready to defend and protect her from a stalker who's sending threatening letters. A take-no-prisoners, deep thinking detective, Quinn first suspects Audie of sending the letters to herself as a publicity stunt. !!! That notion doesn't impress Audie, let me tell you, and the sparks begin to fly. ... sparks? What an understatement. These two are incredibly combustible! Quinn falls hard for Audie, and pushes her past her emotional and physical comfort zones reeeeeaaaal fast. It's a delight to read his dogged determination to get her into his arms and bed. Along the way Audie's mother's murder is also solved, and the stalker is unmasked. This is a great debut from Susan Donovan - surprisingly tender while being full of intrigue, laughs and hot, hot sizzle. We loved it.

I never heard of Susan Donovan before this book, and let me tell you, I will definitely check out her other titles!
This book sucked me in completely. It almost never happens for me, but Ms Donovan managed to get me glued to the pages of her book and read it in just exciting 2 days!
The romance, the suspense, the action, the drama, the comedy, the values and principles, the sensuality... everything about this book was perfect! I loved the characters and what a surprise some of them were to me. :)
I truly recommend this book to everybody who likes any of the combinations of writing styles I wrote above!

Customer Reviews:
A good solid resume book.......2006-01-31
No resume knocks anyone dead, but this book generally gives good advice on how to write one. In Yate's resume samples you'll sometimes see lists and bullet lists that are too long for anyone but a computer to sift through, and some of the sample resumes are a bit crowded, but all-in-all, the content is very useful. If you've thought through what kind of work you want and know who your targeted employers are, this is a good solid resume book.
Middle of the road..........2003-01-28
I didn't find any new, earth-shattering insights into the resume process, but it did layout the fundamentals nicely. I learned a few new things, and it gave me a good outline to put together a resume.
The section that describes how to pull the resume information together, would have been presented better had it been in some sort of a chart or list format. The way it is set up - it is wrtten in long sentences that stretch over a couple pages. I had to keep flipping back and forth to remember what step to do next.
There was a lot of redundant information, and I thought the examples didn't help me much.
But in the end, it did prompt me to put together a new, more concise, and tailored resume. Although the description of how to edit the final resume was a bit broad.
Too General and Elementary.......2002-09-05
Book offers too simplistic and barely entry-level formatting and ideas. The styles were all basic and not varied enough, and the jobs were all low level. I am a marketing director and the upper level resumes they had were still so basic they were not useful as examples. Might be good for high school students, though.
Top-notch advice.......2002-04-16
This book is as good as it gets. Put the time into following setp-by-step and you will have a dramatically different view of your own skills. Plus, you'll end-up with a fantastic resume.
Your book is great.......2002-02-05
I learnerd so much from this book.

Customer Reviews:
Getting started on your writing.......2007-07-09
Excellent way to get going on that mystery novel. The exercises direct your thinking about your plot and characters. Answering her questions makes the characters especially come alive and the story takes off from there!!!
Good for newbies.......2007-05-22
Writing instruction books penned by writers are a dime per every two dozen. Most of their advice amounts to a re-packaging of every writer cliché available for free: Show, don't tell; write a character bio; use he said/she said; conflict, conflict, conflict. Rarely does anything write-home-worthy come down the pike that we haven't read elsewhere. So it is with a mix of openness and skepticism that I picked up WRITING AND SELLING YOUR MYSTERY NOVEL by Hallie Ephron.
The result? A good primer for beginners, but mostly just another rehash of generic advice to the more seasoned writer. Ephron covers everything in this book: Characterization, dialogue, selecting a title, setting, plotting, suspense, revision, marketing, polishing, selling--I mean she covers it ALL. She also includes copious charts and graphs that illustrate her points for the reader's personal use. This is what makes it such a good, comprehensive tool for someone just getting into writing who could benefit from an all-in-one resource. But as much as that's a strength of the book, it's also a weakness. The book is too busy with charts, and Ephron breezes through every imaginable subject so quickly that she rarely scratches past the surface. In this way, WRITING AND SELLING is malnourished inasmuch as it's comprehensive.
For intermediate to advanced writers, there are a few good chapters in here. I particularly enjoyed the ones on plotting and suspense, and Ephron's itemization of different plot twists and turns, when coupled with the chapter on suspense, is almost worth the price of the book alone. So, if you're just starting out, feel free to buy WRITING AND SELLING YOUR MYSTERY NOVEL to get your beak wet. Then go deeper with DON'T MURDER YOUR MYSTERY or SELF-EDITING FOR FICTION WRITERS.
Midwest Book Review: December 2006 Issue.......2006-12-02
Hallie Ephron's new How-To book is one of the best books on writing mysteries that I've ever read. Ephron, one half of the best-selling mystery duo G.H. Ephron, knows exactly how to construct interesting, twisty, and effective plots and characters, and she doesn't hesitate to divulge her secrets.
The book is divided into four sections: Planning, Writing, Revising, and Selling Your Mystery Novel. She provides apt examples, excellent charts, and interactive exercises that will help both the neophyte and the long-time practitioner. She includes an appendix of resources as well.
As SJ Rozan writes in her introduction: "The map in this book will make the process of writing your novel controllable, understandable, and as close to fun as it gets. You'll still have to do the work; this book won't write your book. But it will show you what work to do, so you can plan, structure, and write. And revise, rework, and rewrite. It will show you how to start, what to do when you're mired in the middle, and how to come to a triumphant finish. And, if you're still standing, it will help you market it to an agent an editor so that your book can end up, finally, in the hands of those most elusive, legendary, and desirable inhabitants of this loony Land: readers."
If you've ever wanted to write mysteries or if you seek merely to improve your mystery-writing craft and technique, this book will help you get there. Run right out and get this one. I can't recommend it highly enough. ~Lori L. Lake, Midwest Book Review
So you think you can write a genre novel?.......2006-09-25
If you, reading this review, believe you have a mystery novel in you just waiting to be written but you're not quite sure how to start, go get this book. It will tell you what you need, how to start, how to get to the end, and how to finish. Then it will tell you what to do to revise your novel, who to get to read it before you market it, and how to start the process of getting an agent or an editor. If you believe you have a book in you, and you follow the directions, you WILL wind up with a finished product. The quality will reside in your skills as a writer, but the technical aspects will be taken care of.
WRITING AND SELLING not only tells you what to do, it tells you what NOT to do (which is probably just as important), and gives examples. Ephron has exercises in every chapter, specific suggestions for each phase of the writing process, and references for further research. She even gives technical advice on how to use tools already available to you, on your computer, in the revising and editing process.
WRITING AND SELLING is basically a workbook for a first-time writer. The tools and instructions would work, with minor modifications, for just about any genre fiction, and would probably do some good if used by some so-called "literary" authors.
Clear and Detailed Information for Learning and Applying to Your Writing Habits.......2006-07-20
At the heart of every mystery novel lies a puzzle for the story's hero, and the reader, to solve. In the beginning the mystery seems to be about one thing, but in the end it turns out to be about something else.
To make it work, the writer develops a string of events and presents them in a series of twists and turns. The main story is tangled with sub plots and complicated by characters that may or may not have something to hide.
Writing and Selling Your Mystery Novel takes you from planning a mystery novel to targeting potential markets and agents.
Beginning with the premise and continuing through to title selection, Part I provides a step-by-step guide to the process of planning a mystery novel. At the end of each Chapter the writer is instructed to add to the blueprint at the end of the section. The blueprint is the basic framework for a novel. By the end of the planning section the writer has a completed blueprint and is ready to write.
From the mystery novel's opening scene to its coda, Part II provides a guide to the writing process. It discusses crafting scenes, introducing characters, creating mystery and maintaining suspense. This is where the real work begins -- writing the first draft.
Part III suggests a range of techniques for polishing a novel. No one writes a publishable first draft. This section guides the reader through revision, pacing and characterization.
The final section gives tips on finding an agent and a publisher. Part IV shows how to prepare a query packet and send a manuscript out into the world. If the mystery is a good one it will find a home.
