Book Description

Patriotism or practical joke?

Harrison, NH -- Ninth-grade student Philip Malloy was suspended from school for singing along to The Star-Spangled Banner in his homeroom, causing what his teacher, Margaret Narwin, called "a disturbance." But was he standing up for his patriotic ideals, only to be squelched by the school system? Was Ms. Narwin simply trying to be a good teacher? Or could it all be just a misunderstanding gone bad -- very bad? What is the truth here? Can it ever be known?

Heroism, hoax, or mistake, what happened at Harrison High changes everything for everyone in ways no one -- least of all Philip -- could have ever predicted.

4 out of 5 stars How the media frenzy can interfere with the truth.......2007-06-18

Nothing but the Truth provides an interesting perspective on high school and the media culture that we live in today. As a young adult novel, this book deals with issues that teens can relate to: disenchantment with school, challenging of authority, disconnection with parents, and trying to carve out an identity. Philip has three conflicts in this story: one against Mrs. Narwin, one against the school system that was caused by his behavior, and ultimately with himself. The author provides a realistic portrait of a teenage boy. However, readers are not given any true insight as to why Philip behaves as he does. Suggestions for the behavior are made, but never explored. The reader never can understand how and if Philip has changed because of this incident. The other characters are given superficial development. They are mainly used as foils to interact with the main character. The actions and events are believable given today's media culture. The readers mainly see the story through Philip's eyes although the school administration and Mrs. Narwin do have some input. From Philip's viewpoint, the story is skewed in his favor. A strength of this novel is the issues that it raises. The media culture, challenging authority, and teenage angst all are presented in a fashion that would appeal to a teenage audience. This is an excellent resource for high school teachers. The realism of the novel could provide lively discussions for high school students. The issues that the story raises might make for some lively debates.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of time..........2007-06-01

Okay this book was REALLY BORING! It had an ok plot when we read the back of the book but when we started to read it it was not written in a way that was interesting to us. Avi has some good books but this was not one of his better ones. Miss. Narwin sent to many letters to her sister, and there was barely (if not no) any reason for her to write to her sister. The memos were boring and we think Avi could have told us the information in a different way. Really bad.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing the Peace.......2007-03-28

I recommend this book for kids who like books that never get boring. I think Avi is a great author and I am glad that the book won the Newbery Medal. The book was really easy to read and not hard to understand. I like imagining the real thing, like what he character looks like. I learned that you can get suspended for little things! I like how the book had the names of who is talking before the character actually talks. Almost throughout the whole book I found many interesting surprises. As one can see Nothing but the Truth by Avi is a great book to read and enjoy by the fire.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing but the Truth.......2007-03-23

Nothing but the Truth is a really great book. It is buy an author named Avi. This book is about a middle school kid name Phillip. Phillip got suspended because he was singing the national anthem in the morning. So the teacher got mad at Phillip and wrote him up. The characters are: Phillip, mom, dad, Mrs.Nawrin, principal, and Phillip friend named Jake. This book was probably written for anybody. There are no certain ages. This book could be for males and females.

The whole book was good. It was also conversably. I liked this book because it had to deal with school relationship. I didn't dislike the book because the setting was great. The characters played their role great. Everything was great. Some parts took place in his home with his parents. Some parts took place at school in Mrs.Nawrin room. It also took place in the principal office.

I liked this book a lot. The reason why I liked this book because it was enjoyable. I would recommend this book to anybody who like long and awesome books

4 out of 5 stars Track Tryouts.......2007-03-15

My review is about Philip Malloy who wanted to try out for the track team. He wanted to try out because he was a very fast runner, and the coach and other students thought he could help them win a championship. But it turned out that he could not try out because he was failing in his English class. He soon got in trouble for humming in the classroom. The school was doing the National Athem and philip began humming. He eventually was kick out of the classroom. Right now the Princpal is talking about suspending Philip and Jennifer is wondering why.
They all figure it was a silly rule that you can not sing when The Star Spangled Banner was playing, it's a sign of disrespect. Philip was eventually transferred to a different homeroom. He was transfered from Mrs. Narwin class to Mr. Lunser class but he was suspended for 2 days for not apologizing to Mrs.Narwin. This situation became so popular that Jennifer decide to plublish it in the newspaper. Jennifer was an Education Reporter. This situation had the whole town talking and seems that Philip was getting alot of attention.Philip was getting so much attention and the coach did not want him to try out anymore because he wasn't a team player and Philip was upset. He truly wanted to be on the track team but the coach told him maybe next year. Philip decide that he did not want to go back to that school anymore and he tansfered to Washington Academy from Harrison High. It was also time for the school budget at Harrison High and everyone was hoping it would pass. When that day came they were defeated. Philip went to his new school and when he meet his new teacher , they were preparing to sing the national athem and Philip started to cry. He was asked why and he said he did not know the words....

4 out of 5 stars A Little Off-Balance.......2007-07-26

"God, he's just a little off balance," thought Maisie Dobbs about Officer Tucker while he was questioning her. For Maisie is investigating the death of an artist who supposedly accidentally fell from a scaffold while he was preparing to mount his mysterious triptych (3-piece art work) in a museum in England. Off balance is right, and Georgina Bassington-Hope, a famous journalist in her own right, is convinced that her artist brother, Nicholas, was pushed off the scaffold to his death. Hired by Georgina, Maisie sets of to slowly, methodically investigate the Bassington-Hope family, friends and acquaintances. Her method is fascinating reading as she quietly intuits each vital step in this formidable process, punctuated by significant opposition from the police and some smugglers.

The reader through Ms. Winspear's carefully detailed presentation meets these characters and gets to share in the intimate knowledge about their finer and gauche personality aspects. A psychologist as well as Investigator, she's got the talent with which one is born and that which can't be taught! Astute and compassionately honest she is!

Depression England and the awful World War that preceded it are frankly and carefully presented, leaving no doubt how these events created suffering and incomparable struggle for all who are surviving both. Indeed these characters somehow manage to thrive out of some deeper fine qualities that slowly emerge as Daisie continues her exploration into the seamier side of men and women of both the upper and lower class British citizens.

This is a fine, fine novel that will thrill the true mystery lover who really doesn't want to figure out the puzzle on page 1 or 100 but wants to relish the truly intriguing art divided into successive canvases of a classic, wonderful mystery!

4 out of 5 stars Maisie Dobbs #4.......2007-07-14

I love this series! A thinking woman! Looking forward to the continuation of the series.

3 out of 5 stars A dry watershed.......2007-06-24

This is Jacqueline Winspear's fourth novel about Maisie Dobbs, "psychologist and investigator." Fans of the series may be slightly disappointed, but should still enjoy it. First-time readers will wonder what all the fuss is about. For, as I suspected already in the third novel, PARDONABLE LIES, the narrative span is becoming difficult to sustain over four books.

But Winspear's sense of period seldom lets her down, and there are still many interesting things here: her view of the vibrant art scene between the wars or the heady night world of jazz clubs and cocktails, contrasted with the effect of the Depression on the out-of-work poor and the lamentable state of public health. And those parts of the story which have to do with the rags-to-riches rise of the heroine (housemaid, war nurse, Canbridge graduate, private investigator) are mercifully shorter -- though Maisie's emotional problems would mean very little to those who had not read the earlier books. But Winspear seems caught on a difficult watershed: on the one hand, continuing to write about the legacy of the First War, which no longer has the resonance that it had in her first books; on the other, exploring the life of a nation moving inexorably towards the Second. There are aspects of both here, but they do not blend easily. If she is to continue, the author needs to move forward rather than back -- and also develop the inner life of her heroine so as to make her interesting for who she is now, rather than as the product of previous books in the series.

Readers who want to read more about the role of artists in the first War -- an important element in this book -- might be interested in REGENERATION by Pat Barker. Although Barker's novel deals with poets (Sassoon and Owen among them) rather than painters, it tackles head-on the conflict between war's brutality and artistic sensitivity, which has been a persistent theme in Winspear's books, and a moving one.

5 out of 5 stars damn good!!!!.......2007-09-21

this sequel to married to the game was off da hook! i just wish it would have given me a closing to this long overdue of ceazia. thats my gurl and all but she needs to get whats coming to her.

2 out of 5 stars What, is she series.......2007-09-20

I read the first two book, and the first was that one. The second was just everywhere... all over the place. So my friend who order the naked truth said it wasn't that good. So I just read all of Ceazia's chapters, because that's all you need to know for the 4 book (A trick I learned from reading her third, because none of those characters were in the fourth same with the first). I'm hoping here next book will settle down instead of just full craziness and all over the place. Cuz I don't want to be reading no book and at the end be like WTF.

4 out of 5 stars WHEN IS IT GOING TO STOP???!!!!!!!.......2007-07-04

WHY ARE THEY GOING ON AND ON WITH THIS SEQUEL? FOR ALL OF U WHO HAVENT READ THIS BOOK YET I WILL GO AHEAD AND ANSWER THE QUESTION YES THERE WILL BE A PART 4 TO THIS BOOK, I JUST DIDNT LIKE THE FACT THAT THE AUTHOR WAS KIND OF PULLING AWAY FROM THE MAIN CHARACTER WHICH WAS CEAZIA. I WANTED W MORE ABOUT HER BUT INSTEAD IT WAS ABOUT DANIELLE AND IF I COULD REMEMBER DANIELLE WAS NOT A GANGSTER'S GIRL IT WAS ALWAYS CEAZIA. BUT I WILL BE READING THE 4TH PART JUST TO SEE HOW LONG SHE WILL GO ON WITH THIS.....UR GIRL***JENN***.....HOLLA!!!!

4 out of 5 stars good.......2007-05-25

I loved all the other books before this one. This one was good but it was missing a lot of pieces. When it said what Ceazia found that her boyfriend cheated on her it didn't specify if it was a woman or man. It just didn't finish it's story. So I guess we'll just have to wait for a new one. With the way it ended there better be another book coming out soon.

3 out of 5 stars So So.......2007-04-04

I will say Chunichi haven't given Ceazia a rest yet and from what I see there will be another book coming soon. But, will say this book was so so. Liked that there was more added characters to the book. Ceazia moved to ATL to get away from her pass and start over by becoming a good girl she meets Parlay a well know singer. She changes everything for him but, it all back fire when she finds out the unthinkable about his cheating ways.

Danielle also move to the ATL to follow up behind Ceazia for revenge but, in that case she find herself trying to sleep her way up to the top to become partner at a lawfirm and also sleeping with a man that is married to Angel that gets revenge on Danielle for sleeping with her man.

Ceazia find herself going back to the VA because she felt it was time to head back and reclaim her hometown.
Danielle find out that Ceazia went. Danielle told Shawn he can get paid if he is welling to help her get back at Ceazia.

This book does open up on more characters but, in a way didn't like how it ended. Read the first 2 books and now this one and soon want to see how the number 4 book will be. So will say this book was a SO SO.

5 out of 5 stars Back Story.......2007-09-26

this book kinda was a let down...at the same time it was great...its the back story of zedd and the boundry walls...not a must for the begining Terry Goodkind fan...but a must for people who've read the sword of truth series

5 out of 5 stars Great Short Story.......2007-09-25

Unfortunately, many reviewers have not given Debt of Bones it's due. As this was originally released as a short story to sideline the Sword of Truth series, this is not as long as a novel.

Debt of bones is about a woman who has a bone debt with First Wizard, Zeddicus Zu'l Zorandor. She uses this debt to attempt to get Zedd to save her daughter from the forced from Dhara, but in doing so, helps to start events that we've read in the Sword of Truth series' past.

It is wonderful to be able to have a small segment of Zedd's past plus the opportunity to see the events that happened when the boundaries were put up. While short, it is, all in all, a fun read.

3 out of 5 stars Still worth reading.......2007-09-17

Written a bit out of phase, this book does add depth to the whole series. I would have enjoyed reading it sooner, than later!

4 out of 5 stars Debt of Bones.......2007-08-23

This side story provides wonderful insight into the world that Goodkind has created. If you are not familiar with the Sword of Truth Series this novella would be a wonderful place to start the adventure. Debt of Bones (Sword of Truth Prequel Novel)

5 out of 5 stars Great prequel!.......2007-08-10

Anyone who gives this a bad review is clueless... Who cares how short it is... hello? It's a prequel. It's not a novel. lol.

It's a great read and I loved it just like the Sword of Truth Series!

Book Description

Recently, Ridley Jones stepped off a street corner and into an abyss of violence, deception, and fear. She is being a lot more careful about where she steps and trying to get on with her life when another seemingly mundane act- picking up a few envelopes of prints at a photo lab- puts Ridley at the nexus of a global network of crime. A shadowy figure of a man appears in almost every picture she’s taken in the last year, lurking just far enough away to make identification impossible. Everyone from the federal government to the criminal underworld wants to know who the man is- and where he is- and some people are willing to kill to find out.

Now the FBI is at her door, some serious bad guys are following her every move, and the family she once loved and relied on is more distant than ever. Ridley has never felt so confused or alone in her life. Everyone she loves has turned out to be a stranger- she even feels like a stranger to herself. Is she a product of nature or nurture?

At once hunting down a ghost and running for her life, Ridley doesn’t know if she ever had the power to shape her own destiny or if love exists anywhere beyond her imagination. The only thing Ridley knows for sure is that she has to get to the truth about herself and her past if she’s ever going to find her way home.

Charged with relentless intensity and kinetic action, playing out with unnerving suspense on the streets of New York and London, and seen through the terrified but determined eyes of a young woman whose body and heart are pushed to the point of shattering, Sliver of Truth is another triumph from the New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Lies.

Now this is a story that will keep you turning pages--for hours! It will also make you wonder--and hope--you never have such happenings yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Horrid!.......2007-06-11

There really should be a warning on this book that you MUST read the first one or you won't have a clue! I tried to read this POS and just gaveup after 35 pages. I had NO idea who these people where, what was happening - and ultimately just didn't care! This piece of junk illustrates the main problem I have with series - if you don't read them all you won't know what the hell is happening. In this case, I didn't care. The writing wasn't that good and if was very frustraing being jerked around, not knowing who or what was going on. Why would I waste my time when there are SO many GOOD books out there! Thank goodness I didn't pay for this, this, THING. I got it from the library where it's been sitting gathering dust. You can tell no one has ever read it all the way through - no surprise there. YUCK.

3 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2007-05-19

This is a really interesting book, but I think you must read her first book, Beautiful Lies, to make sense of what is happening. You do finally figure it out but would have been nice to have the background while you were reading the new book. I think impatient readers would stop in the first few chapters because it seems that nothing connects.

5 out of 5 stars Another good one .......2007-05-12

Second book in the series. No need to read the first,Beautiful Lies, but it does make this book even better. Both books are easy to read, with so much detail you will want to read it in as few sittings as possible. Enjoy the great mystery and suspense

4 out of 5 stars Puts the Series Back on Track.......2006-10-13

I missed all the hype about this series, and just happened upon the trade paperbacks at the library. The premise, as the title says, is that some kind of plague spontaneously kills every male on earth at the same instant -- except a 20something slacker named Yorick and his monkey Ampersand. Following the events of the first four books, this fifth picks up the story of Yorick, his government agent bodyguard (Agent 355), and a geneticist (Dr. Mann), who have finally made it to San Francisco, where Dr. Mann has a lab where she hopes to be able to figure out why Yorick survived.

The book opens with Yorick at a church, seeking atonement for having killed a woman in the previous book. There, he meets the cute female caretaker, and after a great deal of talking, finally makes the beast with two backs after two years of celibacy. This arc ends rather oddly with a brief glimpse at Yorick's girlfriend Beth, who's been stuck in the Australian outback for the last two years. Then the story switches over to "Hero's Journey", in which we learn all about Yorick's sister Hero, who was last seen languishing in jail in Ohio, after trying to kill Yorick and his companions. Her backstory is given, which goes a long way toward explaining the ease at which she was brainwashed into the Amazon cult, and why she suffers from hallucinations. From here, events start to get complicated, as a rehabilitated Hero arrives in San Francisco hoping to find her brother, mysterious burqa-wearing agents of the Culper Ring attempt to retrieve an item from Agent 355 (all of which relates back to the first book), Dr. Mann runs test on Yorick, and a ninja (who I believe appeared earlier in the series) kidnaps Ampersand.

This all gets a little bit choppy, but it's a definite improvement from books three and four, both of which got fairly ridiculous and suffered from some distracting guest artist work. There's plenty of action, not too much of the lame attempts at humor that the series is infected by, and we get a little more depth with a few characters. My interest had been faltering, but I'll definitely keep reading after this one -- if only to find out when the Israeli army women are going to show up again.

5 out of 5 stars Best volume of the series thus far.......2006-09-05

Volume 5 compiles eight issues of the comic for a bulky 192 page total. The crux of the story occurs in Califonia almost two full years after the plague. Yorick, Agent 355, Dr. Mann and their monkey Ampersand finally approach Mann's bioengineering laboratory in San Francisco. They finally encounter two separate parties that have each trailed our protagonists westward. The intensifying plot offers further backstory for the main characters and introduces a new menace. Does Dr. Mann discover the cause of the plague? Is Hero pursuing her brother with good or evil intentions? Which secret government organization should be trusted, if any? All eight of these issues featured the original team of artists with no 'guests', another plus. Volume 5 was even better than any of the acclaimed previous volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Gets better and better.......2006-05-29

Brian K. Vaughan's compulsively addicting series from Vertigo still gets better and better with each passing issue. Ring of Truth, the fifth collected volume of the series, begins with Yorick looking for forgiveness, and finding more than he bargained for. After that, Yorick, Agent 355, an Dr. Mann finally reach San Francisco and Dr. Mann's lab, and just in time when Yorick begins exhibiting symptoms of the plague that killed every other male on the planet. Add to this 355's renegade former colleagues on the hunt, as well as Yorick's brainwashed raddled sister Hero, and a sexy ninja who kidnaps Yorick's pet monkey Ampersand, and you have the fastest moving and most gripping storyarc of the series thus far. There is also a major discovery regarding how Yorick and Ampersand survived the plague, and the fate of Yorick's Austrailia-stranded girlfriend Beth is hinted at as well. Pia Guerra's art is what you would expect from the previous installments, and she does a fine job as usual. Once you hit the last page, you'll be salivating for more, and believe it or not, the series just gets better.

5 out of 5 stars This series keeps getting better.......2006-04-05

The largest of all the volumes, this is two stories back to back. And good ones, mind you. We're finally getting some answers about what's been going on that caused the Plague and Yorrick's character takes another turn that will come as a surprise to many people. Yorrick is a bit like Shade the Changing Man in that his character keeps changing. Not so obviously as Shade but subtly. Of course, this is the way good writing is supposed to be.

Book Description

By the critically acclaimed author of Loverboy, The Border of Truth balances the weight of a Holocaust survivor's life upon his only daughter, as she tries to discover the truth behind his vow of silence.

During the 1940s a seventeen-year-old European Jewish refugee aboard a ship being returned to Nazi-occupied Brussels, after having been denied American port, writes a series of letters to Eleanor Roosevelt. He beseeches her intervention and tells his own story (the girls he's kissed, the movies he's seen). The minutiae of this young boy's life mix with the mortal realities of the time in his communiqués.

Decades later, in contemporary Manhattan, Sara is uncovering the secrets of her parents--secrets in which, through silence, she's been complicit. The Border of Truth is a multi-faceted exploration of the experience of first-generation children of refugees (in this case of the Holocaust), and the ways in which the stories of their parents define their lives. Ultimately, these two very separate timelines converge as Sara can no longer keep her self-made promise not to ask her father what happened to him and his family during the war. When he thwarts her questions, the pieces of his puzzle find their way to her on their own. Fascinating, mesmerizing, and gorgeously told, The Border of Truth is a riveting read--sure to bring Victoria Redel to the wide and appreciative audience she so handsomely earns in these pages.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-07-20

I just finished reading this book and was so emotional, I had to wait until I stopped crying to write my review. I can't exactly say why it brought up such deep emotions, but I got so wrapped up in each of the stories. The way the book was written kept me turning the pages, so I could get back to letters or back to the present, and yet, there were times, I would read a letter or a passage over again, just to "listen" to whichever character I was reading at the time. Ms. Redel is a wonderful writer. I read one review where the reviewer said he felt he did not learn about the characters or about their motives, I have to totally disagree. Ms. Redel said more about a character in one sentence than most authors can say in a paragraph. And each letter revealed more and more about Isaac. It is just a wonderful book, that in a very different, quiet, way, tells a story about a holocaust survivor, and a survivor's family, who of course have different issues to deal with. I am not a good writer myself, so I am having a hard time explaining this book and the emotions it stirs....but I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Novel!.......2007-05-27

One of those rare stories, beautifully written and totally absorbing. What do we really know about our parents, and choices they faced before we were born, in a different world? Victoria Redel's novel works on mulitiple levels, her characters are vibrant and alive. I can't wait for her next book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-05-25

This book is an excellent take on a very different Holocaust story. Taking into account the impact that that time and place had on the future generations of a survivor's family. A hopeful and sorrowful story wrapped into one.

4 out of 5 stars The Border of Truth, Indeed.......2007-05-12

I enjoyed this book, and will recommend it, but with some reservation.

The story is a juxtaposition of two threads: The first is a series of letter written--but not sent--to Eleanor Roosevelt by a teenage refugee on a ship off Virgina from which he hoped to gain entry to the US in 1940. The second is a third person account of his daughter's attempts to penetrate her father's past to provide a family story in anticipation of adopting a daughter forty-three years later. The letters progressively reveal more of the "truth", while in the daughter's story she slowly ferrets out the same facts.

So far, so good. The interplay and pacing of the two parts is excellent, and the general approach works. Only some details bother me. The letters become more adolescent in the middle of the story, although that might be argued to be understandable in terms of the stress the boy was under. Some of the daughter's actions are harder to accept. Professor about to adopt a baby finds happiness with the furniture repair man? Well ...

Ultimately it was a good story, but I finished it not understanding either the father or daughter. The author never provided a sufficiently compelling psychology of either of her protagonists to answer the question "why?". It would have been less of a problem had the novel been less ambitious and the author obviously less talented, but I'm left with the feeling that Redel should be capable of more.

I do think she's an author to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping story, innovative structure.......2007-05-10

Sophisticated and at the same time very approachable, Redel's writing style and the innovative structure of this book make for an easy and yet gripping read. Hard to put down, but also broken into small enough chunks that you can pick it up for just a few minutes of guilty pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars Easy can't-put-down reading........2007-09-09

I would classify Cold truth as mystery with forensics, and a lot of investigation. But, don't get me wrong, it is NOT boring at all. You can't put it down even though some times you only have a few minutes to spare and you think 'I'll finish this chapter and then I'll leave'; no, it is rarely the case because you get hooked and want to go on reading!

I bought this "Truth" book, from Mariah Stewart because going on a trip I finished the book I brought along, and, so I needed something else to help me while I was relaxing (!!??). I found "Last Look" and read it so fast and enjoyed it so much, the first thing I did when I returned home was to look for more from this author.

If you enjoy watching the occasional CSI, this you will like because it is not exactly about how they dissect a body to come out with the truth but more of picking up all the evidence to come up with the killer.... from a time when all the scientific developments were a thing of Science Fiction: Twenty years ago. You'll get it when you read it.

I was recommended Cold Truth (here in Amazon) as a series of four Truth books that even though are somehow connected in relation with some of the main characters, you can read by itself, and since it is the first one of them all, you'll have no problem understanding. But if you are an avid reader, you'll want to keep on reading the "Truths" until you've read them all -I'm up to the third one called Dark Truth, and will discover which characters show up in the next books.

The reading is easy, yet not predictable. You find yourself reading with a mental picture of the characters and their whereabouts. In a sentence, you get into the book and walk alongside the main characters. I consider that as great writing.

5 out of 5 stars Cold Truth.......2007-07-22

Series of 4. Cold Truth, Hard Truth, Dark Truth and Final Truth. Excellent and fast reads. Would buy all her books.

4 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew for adults.......2006-11-20

If you enjoyed Nancy, Bess, George and Ned as a child you will find comparable delight with Mariah Stewart's books. Moderate suspense, minimal gore, unoffensive language, steamless romance and characters who fight for truth and justice without the aid of pyrotechnics. A nice change-up from the standard twisted fare that has become the norm.

5 out of 5 stars I love Mariah Stewart's books, but..........2006-10-17

My preference in reading is light because I read a lot of medical stuff for work. I love suspense with a touch of romance. Mariah Stewart is very entertaining. If you like heavy sappy romance or trashy sex scenes, this is not the author for you. I prefer it's kept clean without eye-rolling lines, so I prefer Stewart. I used to read a lot of James Patterson, but he got way too grewsome for me, so again, this is enough gorey detail for me. All in all, her books are well-written and more than enough to hold my interest until the end. Plus, I'm a Jersey girl, and I love books that take place in that area, like Mary Higgins Clark.

4 out of 5 stars Cold Truth.......2006-07-10

Mariah Stewart is always a fun, easy read. I have and will continue to read everything she writes.

"

In her electrifying first novel, Nicole Richie tells the sensational story of Chloe Parker, a rock royalty princess and a card-carrying member of Hollywood's inner circle. At the age of seven, Chloe was adopted by a music superstar and his wife, transforming her life from rags to riches. What followed was a wild childhood distinguished by parties with movie stars and rock idols, run-ins with the press and the police, and a subsequent stint in rehab.

Suddenly Chloe shoots to instant fame as a spokesmodel for a national ad campaign. When her long-lost birth father appears out of nowhere and her best friend betrays her, she must struggle to keep it all together -- her sobriety, her friendships, and her integrity despite the betrayals of those around her. Ultimately, Chloe comes spectacularly into her own, achieving stardom in her own right and finding true love.

Through the eyes of the captivating Chloe and the talented voice of Nicole Richie, we are given a no-holds-barred look at Hollywood's new elite, behind the velvet ropes, inside star-studded premieres and parties. Whether they're doing the ""circuit"" (begin with shopping at Barneys New York, Marni, and Fred Segal, then end with the grilled vegetable salad at the Ivy), or ending up on the front page of your favorite weekly magazine, Chloe Parker and her fellow A-listers never fail to dazzle, their larger-than-life dramas more riveting than any reality show.

1 out of 5 stars Nicole Richie is trash.......2007-09-17

This is not a book, It's a joke. The confessions of a woman who thinks trash, talks trash, has a trash lifestyle, and is human trash. she should work for the sanitation department.

5 out of 5 stars Great summer reading.......2007-06-27

Personally, I like Nicole Richie, and when I heard she had a book out, I was interested to read what she had to say. Because she is famous for reasons other than her writing skills, I feel people are giving her reviews harsher than are deserved.

All the right ingredients are used to make it a great chick lit book. It's hip, up-to-date on all things social, and gives a true insight to her life. I thought the idea of using herself as the narrator and a fictional best friend as the main character was unique and intriguing, and her writing passionate. The dark, twisted sarcasm and humor that has been infamously attached with Nicole shines in this novel, and I for one can say that I truly enjoyed it.

The best thing I can say to people who hated the book, or sneer at Nicole Richie for attempting something other than a new drug, is that they should go read Hemmingway if they're actually expecting literary genius. :)

1 out of 5 stars What a waste!.......2007-05-22

Well first of all,
For those who actually think Nicole Richie wrote this book, wake up. Sure, she did pay a lot of money to have some one else write it for her and I am sure that she didn't even read the whole thing. Its actually quite funny how some of you think that she actually wrote this..... big mistake for me and a whole lot of wasted time, well not a whole lot, I only read 2 pages, what a waste.

5 out of 5 stars I liked this a lot, actually..........2007-05-06

I would first like to mention that I've never read any tabloids other than the headlines, and I've never had much of an interest in the lives of celebrities.

So why did I read this book?

Well, I had read an article about novels that celebrities had written, and out of the five featured in the article, this one got the best reviews, and the way they described it got my interest.

Hopefully anyone who reads this is not expecting this to be a "great" literary work, because it is not of that form at all, but Nicole does manage to capture and engage you the way reading a diary would as you really get a sense for what the main character feels.

In a way, this book reminds me of The Princess Diaries series, so if you are a fan of Meg Cabot, you might like this book. The humour and the pop culture references only emphasize this.

I give this book five stars because I enjoyed it and it's a book that I can see myself reading several times throughout my life.

3 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2007-02-20

This was an interesting, fun, and enjoyable read.
It should be something you bring to the beach or when you're able to sit down for a few minutes. I didn't usually want to put the book down, but when i did, it was easy to come back to.

5 out of 5 stars Vos' Conflict.......2007-06-09

This volume concludes Quinlan Vos' "undercover" mission. If you have missed a few volumes you definitely do not want to read this one before you finish the others. I thought this was an incredible story and I was surprised by the events more than I expected. I don't really want to spoil the story because if you've been following the series this has some big ones.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent magazine!.......2007-05-14

You should have this collection, it is very good, great drawings, great comic magazine!

4 out of 5 stars Solid Story.......2006-07-04

I was starting to wonder if they were ever going to wrap up Voss' story. I found it very compelling and great continuity. I was waiting for the payoff on the Vos story line. I also like how it leaves the future open for more of his story. The story arc ended nicely. I would recommend this especially at the low price of Amazon. Worth the read!

4 out of 5 stars Clone Wars Vol. 8.......2006-06-04

To pewface this review, the Vos story line has intrested me, but never really captured me. I liked the idea of having a Jedi who was so close to the dark side, that he was endangered to losing it all. And Vos is a perect example. In previous Volumes it has never been clear where he stood, and this volume resolves it. I was always more intrested in Obi Wan and Anakin, but the conclusion of Vos was a good one.

However the general flow was not quite as well done as in previous volumes. This had a slow begining, and then picked up. In previous volumes the begining grabbed me and kept me tuned in for the rest of the volume. Tholme was a great charcter in my eyes. They did a excellent job with the Master and Appertence in this volume.

There where somethings that seemed a bit off for me though. Certain Charcters were intorduced that I didnt feel I got a chance to know. The two largest would be Akku Sell and Bok. Akku was totaly new, and I didnt get to know hom. Bok would seem to be an older Ccharcter, but I don't remember him in the previous volumes, so eitehr I missed him before, or he was in another storyline outside of the Clone Wars.

Either way it was a good volume. 4/5 Stars

5 out of 5 stars An answer for N. Wells..........2006-04-16

N. Wells at the end of his review said "I hear there is a 9th volume coming out, not sure how much more there is to tell in this series though."

The 9th and final volume of the CLONE WARS series of the STAR WARS REPUBLIC comic line will be called ENDGAME, and it means basically what you think it might. It includes the last 5 issues of the REPUBLIC line plus one stand-alone issue. The action takes place during and after EP. III Revenge of the Sith. Strangely, the first two-part story takes place shortly after ROTS as the remaining surviving Jedi deal with the aftermath of Executive Order 66. The second 3-part story takes place during the Battle of Kashyyk in ROTS and deals with Vos' final conflict at which time Order 66 came down. And the final stand-alone issue called PURGE is what you think it means as Darth Vader hunts down the remaining Jedi, thus setting in the darkness that follows the rise of the Empire.

This last issue, well, the last of the 3-parter about Kashyyk was designed by George Lucas himself, so that which sets up the forth-coming live-action TV series. So characters that survive that story are sure to be found in the TV series.
