Book Description

Martin Fletcher presents a portrait of a Northern Ireland of lakes, rivers, and mountains, where customs, traditions, and old-world charm survive. He reveals an incredibly resourceful province which has given the world not just bombs and bullets, but the tyre and the tractor, a dozen American presidents, two Prime Ministers of New Zealand, and a Hindu god.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, two slight omissions.......2004-08-09

Call me picky for marking down an outstanding book like "Silver Linings" for two omissions that probably aren't even in the author's control, but so be it. A combination between a travel guide and a collection of memories, this book badly needs at least one more detailed map of Northern Ireland than the small ones provided at the start of each chapter. Fletcher makes the reader truly wish to visit many of the sites he describes, but one could never find them with the maps provided. Second, a few pictures, even black and white, would add immensely to the impact of Fletcher's words. That said, this is a terrifically entertaining and informative book that I'd recommend, "Go you out and purchase it!"

4 out of 5 stars Visit the Other Ireland.......2003-02-19

I just finished reading Martin Fletcher's book about his travels around Northern Ireland. I'm so sorry my wife and I didn't know about this book before we visited Ulster in September 2002. The author correctly goes out of his way to let the reader know that there's more to Northern Ireland than bombings, religious stife, and high unemployment. A trip to the British province is an educational experience -- a wild and complex history, beautiful countryside, and warm people who welcome visitors. It's not surprising that Travel Weekly magazine, "The Travel Industry's Leading Newspaper" (as it calls itself) highlights Belfast in its 10FEB03 article, "The Next Big Thing -- Up and Coming Destinations." Silver Linings opened my eyes to the opinion that the USA probably wouldn't be what it is today were it not for its links to Ulster. If you read this book and like it, you'd probably enjoy reading one of the "Incidents of Travel" books written by John Lloyd Stephens about his travels throughout Mesoamerica and the Middle East during the 1800s.

5 out of 5 stars The real Northern Ireland revealed.......2001-08-26

Martin Fletcher has captured the essence of Northern Ireland in this delightful book. He introduces us to a wonderful patchwork of characters while he describes the beauty of the countryside. He addresses the sometimes-tragic history of the province, but he also provides some fascinating historical tidbits about the connections between Ulster and the United States that should interest American readers. Those who enjoy the work of Bill Bryson and anyone who loves Ireland, north or south, will appreciate this book. I have traveled to Northern Ireland over fifteen times since 1974, and I just happened to find this book on the last day of my recent five-week holiday. I have never read anything else that mentions so many of the people, places and things that I love about the country. I certainly share the author's hope that there are some "silver linings" on the horizon for this special corner of the world.

Book Description

The memoir of a former top tennis player who dedicated her life, and the entirety of her immense fortune, to helping disadvantaged children. In the 1980s, Andrea Jaeger was a tennis phenomenon -- she turned pro at the age of 14 and was the #2 ranked female tennis player in the world. But, despite her success, she was unfulfilled. After an injury ended her career early, Jaeger began to answer her true calling: following the Word of God. Listening to His voice ultimately led Jaeger to put the entire fortune she had amassed on the tennis court into developing The Silver Foundation, a non-profit camp for children with cancer, and dedicating her life to bringing joy to others. This is the story of how she went from tennis great to her second service and the story of the incredible kids she's helped along the way.

5 out of 5 stars A great example of Loving your Neighbor........2004-11-05

Arthur K. Dugan, an avid reader.

Andrea Jaeger's book " FIRST SERVICE " is one of the finest I have ever read on personal spirituality and I have read many. Her life of service to God through the giving of all her great amount of money to develop a place for children with cancer called The Silver Foundation. As I read through her book she reminds me of dedicated people like Mother Teresa in her work with the poor. I will read the book again and highly recommend it to others and how each of us needs to be aware of the less fortunate.

4 out of 5 stars Wholesome Inspiring Book.......2004-10-30

Andrea is defintely an exceptional person, first as a tennis pro, then as a philanthropist. The latter is easily her passion and her excelling service to God.

She relates this story as it unfolds in personal memoir of her life and its turns, each one very much influenced by experiential leadings by God. This continues to develop as she senses signs which she responds to which eventually culminate in the founding of her magnificent work with cancer children.

Puzzling and of concern is her admission that she was babe in the Scriptures and still seems to be convinced by outward confirmation of rather bizarre happenings, rather than clear fountain of God's Holy Word. For example, her story in Detroit with the key to the kingdom is more poignantly given in Scripture repeatedly said to be Christ crucified for sins, e.g. Luke 24 et al.

While truly a model for all, but especially young and talented, to serve humanity, her tendency to follow outward occurrences and inward emotions to the exclusion and reduction of clearly revealed Word of God is dangerous and suspicious.

Don't let any of this reviewer's spiritual concerns detract anyone from this fine read and inspiration to all to get involved and serve.

5 out of 5 stars The Inspirational Autobiography of a Former Tennis Champ.......2004-05-17

In the early 1980s, Andrea Jaeger was a household name, even among people who had little or no interest in tennis, the sport that catapulted her into the limelight. One of the youngest players ever to turn pro, Jaeger at 14 was everywhere --- in newspapers and magazines, on television. Her signature long, blonde pigtails made her immediately recognizable. She was the media darling of the tennis world.

Her career was cut short by an injury, prompting her to pursue a dream she had had since childhood --- not all that long ago, at the time --- to work with children. After spending several years acquiring business skills and other related experience, Jaeger and a friend moved to Aspen, Colorado, where they eventually set up a foundation and started a ministry to reach out to cancer-stricken children at a place now known as the Silver Lining Ranch. Jaeger's entire $1.4 million in lifetime earnings provided the seed money for the organization.

That's the straightforward account of what happened. In FIRST SERVICE, Jaeger fills in the details, the often remarkable, behind-the-scenes story of a woman whose childlike faith in God never questioned that He would bring to pass the hopes and dreams she held out for the future --- a future she always knew would not find its center in professional tennis. In her telling of the story of her life, her faith and her ministry, Jaeger clearly demonstrates that what was once considered to be her youthful exuberance is instead who she really is, because her energy, excitement and enthusiasm for life is every bit as much a part of her personality today, at the age of 38, as it was when she was a celebrity teenager.

Throughout her life, as well as the pages of the book, God plays the dominant role. From an early age, Jaeger sensed the presence of God even though she did not grow up in a strong faith environment. Many of her experiences with God have been nothing short of mystical; as a child, she had a vision of the Children's Crusade long before she ever knew anything about the actual event in history. Her narrative is sprinkled with accounts of dreams and visions that are bound to make believers shiver with supernatural delight and skeptics question her grounding in reality. But much of what she saw in those dreams and visions has come to pass and has contributed to the success of the ranch, so the skeptics may have to look elsewhere for something to disbelieve.

True to her nature, which apparently is an extraordinarily generous one, Jaeger is donating all of her proceeds from sales of FIRST SERVICE to help hurting children. In addition to the Silver Lining Ranch, Jaeger and the Silver Lining Foundation (www.silverliningfoundation.org) support children's charities in the U.S. and around the world.

5 out of 5 stars First Service -- Finding a Purpose to Life.......2004-04-06

This book by Andrea Jaeger is ideal for anyone who wants to get insight into finding out what is important in life. Andrea was a great tennis player but she has found joy and purpose off the court -- helping others and being close to her faith. She tells her story in a way that makes it clear how others, too, can find joy. The book is also excitng to read as you learn about miracle after miracle that has helped her build a beauitful ranch in Aspen, CO, where children with cancer go to have great days of peace and joy. Andrea rocks! This book is a perfect gift for anyone you love.

Book Description

Floods, fires, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, hurricanes--we are quick to call them ''natural disasters.'' But are they? Did the great fires that swept Yellowstone in 1988 devastate the park, or did they just ravage our image of the park as a fixed, unchanging national treasure? This lucid, lively book reveals the shortsightedness behind conceiving of such events as disastrous to nature. Indeed, Seth Reice contends, such thinking has led to policies that have done the environment more harm than good--the U.S. Forest Service's campaign against natural forest fires and the Army Corps of Engineers' flood prevention program are examples. He points out ways in which we can better address the wide range of environmental problems humanity faces at the dawn of the new millennium.

Reice argues, in terms refreshingly nontechnical yet scientifically sound, that the traditional, equilibrium paradigm--according to which ''stability'' produces healthier ecosystems than does sudden, sweeping change--is fundamentally flawed. He describes a radically different model of how nature operates, one that many ecologists and population biologists have come to understand in recent years: a concept founded on the premise that disturbances help create and maintain the biodiversity that benefits both the ecosystem and ourselves. Reice demonstrates that ecosystems need disturbances to accomplish indispensable tasks such as the production of clean air and water. He recommends changes in environmental management to incorporate the essential role of natural disturbances.

This book shows that every tornado's funnel cloud, every forest fire's billowing cloud of smoke, has tremendous benefits for the ecosystem it impacts. As anyone concerned with man's impact on the environment will appreciate, this is the cloud's real silver lining.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A More Realistic Model of Change in Natural Ecosystems.......2006-11-09

This is a concise, very clear overview of the nonequilibrium dynamics in ecosystems -- why natural "disasters" are actually beneficial to the environment by encouraging biodiversity. The old, equilibrium models miss the fundamental role of the environment in species frequency and distribition -- see The Theory of Island Biogeography (E. O. Wilson) and The Song of the Dodo (David Quammen). While I thorougly enjoyed The Song of the Dodo as creative science writing, this drier and shorter volume provides a better basis for thinking about, and managing, our environment.

Book Description

Hailed as "one of the best writers in the business" by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, multi-award-winning author Maggie Osborne delivers hilarious and heartrending tales of resilient women full of grit, pride, and dignity who shine through hard times. Now meet the most irresistible and independent heroine of them all, a woman called Low Down, who never had anything good happen to her until the day she asked for the one thing that only a man could give her. . . .

As scruffy and rootless as the other prospectors searching for gold in the Rockies, Low Down wanted nothing in return for nursing a raggedy bunch through the pox. But when pressed to reveal her heart's wish, she admits, "I want a baby." Not a husband, not a forced marriage to the proud man who drew the scratched marble and became honor bound to marry her. To be sure, Max McCord was easy on the eyes, but he loved another woman and dreamed of a different life. Yet they agreed to a temporary marriage that could end only in disaster. But can this strange twist of fate lead to the silver lining that both have been searching for?

5 out of 5 stars Silver Lining.......2006-12-16

I loved this book. I could not stop reading it. I enjoyed the process in which Max and his family falls in love with Low Down. Max at first is a reluctant groom after drawing a marble that makes him marry Low Down. Max thinks he made a mistake and is embarressed by Low Down and her silver spoon in which she treasures and he compares her to Philadelphia (the sophiticated girl he was suppose to marry). The night Philadelphia marries Max's brother (to save Philadephia's honor), Max is so angry and full of pain and can't stand the tought of his brother living the life he was supposed to have. Through hardship Max falls in love with Low Down and realizes he married the right woman after all.

5 out of 5 stars Silver Lining is silver writing.......2006-07-21

This is the only book I've read by Maggie Osborne. I cannot wait to read more. Max and Low Down might have the love story you've been searching for in a book. They truly travel from a rocky start to a rocky middle but to a Silver Lining finish. Such a wonderful story. This one makes me think of several books by LaVyrle Spencer that I've read. ~If you like Spencer, you'll like Osborne.~

5 out of 5 stars Low Down, the heroine to end all heroines!.......2006-03-10

When Louise "Low Down" nursed a prospecting community through a smallpox epidemic she expected nothing in return. She is shocked that the miners insist she think of "her heart's fondest wish". When she tells them she wants a baby, they are stunned! No one has ever thought of Low Down as more than "one of the guys". So they have a drawing to be fair: whoever draws the scratched marble will marry Low Down and give her a baby.

Max McCord draws the scratched marble and is offered up to Low Down. Max knows he owes his life to her, but he is resentful because he has his life all planned out! He is engaged to another and is to go to work for her father in his bank when he returns home. Blaming Low Down for the marriage, he returns home with her to his family where he discovers his fiance is also with child.

The characters were very well developed and the sense of place well described. Louise is one of the strongest heroines I have ever come across. She continually has to prove herself to Max and his family, the townspeople and even herself as she embarks on a life she never expected.

All she has ever wanted is a family- and what a family to be married into! Philadelphia (the ex-fiance, now his brother's wife)is one of the most spoiled, vile, self-centered individuals. A character you can easily hate. And Max's brother! What a weak-willed doormat! He blames Louise and Max for having to marry Philadelphia!

Bravo, Maggie Osborne. A "keeper" for me. Heartbreaking, charming, witty, sexy. This book is all those things and more!

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, great heroine "Louise".......2005-03-09

The heroine made the book in my opinion. And Max's family, the McCords. But without Low Down, the book would not have been as good. I really enjoyed the details of the book and wish there'd been more detail to her work in the house, their work on the farm, etc.
Another reviewer is right about Max, he was nothing to write home about as far as romantic men go. But what Louise fell in love with was the family, the house, the home... all the things she'd never had.
Any man would fall in love with a woman who not only is a workhorse cooking, cleaning, farm chores etc., but also has a gorgeous healthy, voluptuous body and strips for him in the kitchen. Please. Louise was like slave labor and free sex for him.
But what really cost this book the 5-star rating I'd have liked to have given was the lame ending. Why oh why didn't she tell him at the end she was carrying his child. That just killed me and annoyed me to no end. That the reader doesn't even get the satisfaction of knowing the reaction of the man. The same man who swooned over Philadelphia when he thought SHE was carrying his child.

Book Description

It's 1953 in Red-baiting, blacklisting Los Angeles, a moral tar pit ready to swallow Easy Rawlins. Easy is out of "the hurting business" and into the housing (and favor) business when a racist IRS agent nails him for tax evasion. Special Agent Darryl T. Craxton, FBI, offers to bail him out if he agrees to infiltrate the First American Baptist Church and spy on alleged communist organizer Chaim Wenzler. That's when the murders begin....

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Blaxploitation Movie's Daddy.......2004-07-07

Even though Mosley's popular whodunnits started taking shape in the 90's, it's easy to see that the stories he writes stemmed from a certain influence:

Shaft, maybe even Black Ceasar, et al. for the action and "givin' it to da man!" undertones. Mixed in with a little bit of "Cotton Comes to Harlem" and "Mohagany" for the occasional romance and levity. In fact, his works don't seem much different than what you would see on the 1973 big screen in a theatre packed to the back with black faces. Note the similarities...

1. You've got your classic hard brother, be he a private dick or just a good guy out to get what's coming to him. Easy, in classic Easy fashion, is a guy trying not to do what's wrong because he's seen enough of that. A hard drinker because of the pain his past has caused him, this fellow with kill only if he has to.

2. There's always the white folks who turn out to be the bad guys. They're cops or ganglords or jerks with a ton of dough. Here we have Lawrence, a tax agent who comes down on Easy because of tax evasion. Second we have Craxton, the FBI guy who wants to use Easy for his own purposes, but makes a deal with him - do my bidding and I'll chill out that tax thing. Finally, there is Officer Fine, a bit player who lusts after the cries and screams of anything black.

3. Can't forget how nobody else "understands him but his woman." And she's black, no way around that. With Easy, he's messing around with a woman who can get him killed as sure as the day is long: Mouse's wife. Now if that's not a mistake, I don't know what is. Mouse is Easy's friend, for one thing. For another, he's a cold-blooded killer. But Easy's willing to risk it all for love.

4. Must mention the white woman he cheats on her with. This is thrown in soley to annoy the white man. In 1970, this act of spite was a given. And it's in this book too.

5. Jive talk. Nothing but jive talk. It simply must be indicative of the era and this novel plays out perfectly as a piece choc full of blacks who were taught how to talk by their 1930's parents, who were taught to talk by THEIR 1900 former slave parents, who, before that, were educated in grammer and English by Africans who weren't even born here and ignorant overssers. Mosley is obviously no stranger to this snowball effect that whites have come to call "ebonics." As the credo goes, "write what you know."

6. The hard brother has to be a vigilante type. No way is he an angel. Easy has taken lives and he regrets it. He drinks like it's going out of style and he needs it. He cheats The Man out of his money to keep things balanced. He can be a sinner, but he must be able to rationalize it believably or the reader (watcher) won't sympathize with him. No problem with that here.

So yeah, it's like a blaxploitation movie with one catch: the white friend. I've never seen that in the movies, yet I've read two of Mosley's books and in both he seems to project his antagonists with an affinity for Jews, similarizing their plights in doomed histories. This approach is effective in that it shows open hearts and opened minds during an era of rampant hate. I liked this book because I could identify with many of the characters, some of whom I am ashamed to say I feel like I've known well in my lifetime. But there's just something about the story that keeps it average...

3 out of 5 stars Mosley Takes a Step Back in A Good Sophomore Effort.......2003-09-14

A Red Death is not the novel Devil In A Blue Dress is, but really what could be? Mosley's style and storytelling are just as sharp, and he takes time to further develop the character of Easy Rawlins, the protagonist and narrator.

The main story of the novel is the same as Devil in a Blue Dress, Easy, a good man, comes into some trouble and has to use his wits, his fists, and his crazy friend Mouse (who conveniently has no problem with any moral questions that may arise on the streets of L.A) to get him out.

Mainly what a Red Death lacks is the tension, the overbearing sense of danger that hangs over every page of his first novel. The classic mystery elements of the plot are niether as complex nor are they as well defined as in Blue Dress. Too many details of the mystery are kept from the reader, therefore the audience is not as engaged during the story and not as satisfied with the resolution. These little disappointments however, will not keep me from following Easy Rawlins in White Butterfly!

4 out of 5 stars Rawlings is weird.......2002-08-02

This is the second Easy Rwalings book, a series by Walter Mosley.
It's a short and fast-paced book, easy to read. There are two problems with Easy Rawlings, though. As happens with all Mosley books, the plots are kind of misty, you just don't know for sure what Rawlings must do or discover through the story. Other thing I find extremely annoying is that, except Rawlings, other characters are completely undeveloped, they're just names thrown into the story, making it a little confusing, you almost never know who is who and what part they seem to take in the plot.

Easy Rawlings is a funny character, though a little too stupid. He acts before he thinks. Mosley thinks this is a means to provide action in the book and it works well, but I thought Easy was rather obtuse sometimes. But maybe Mosley just wanted to create a story as close to reality as possible. As in "Devil in a blue dress", the most interesting character is Mouse, Easy's friend, a murderer without scruples, who should get a book of his own.

I'll give a try to "White Butterfly", the next book in the series.

Grade 7.3/10

2 out of 5 stars Average and ordinary mystery.......2002-01-24

People say that Mosley's characters are full of depth, but I'd have to disagree. It's a conventional mystery with the everyday mystery characters: good guy, bad guy, guy you're not too sure about, and a chaotic mess of characters indifferent to the plot who are only there to create a disturbance. It was supposed to be set in the 50's, but there was a great lack of signs that it was in the 50's, and the few signs that were there felt thrown in--an oh-by-the-way.
The characters seem written from a story workshop approach, rather than by a writer who feels the character. A separation between feeling a character and describing a character.
Some say there are layers and layers to this novel. A pineapple has layers and layers. Anything can be interpreted, now whether or not it asks to be interpreted is something different. Interpret James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, what a baby wants when it cries: these are valid. Interpreting for the sake of interpreting is just what it is.
It is an easy read, perfect for when the mind doesn't want for much thought; for example, read it on the bus or in the car while driving to here and there.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional novel.......2001-07-01

I'm not quite sure if this novel qualifies entirely as a mystery novel because there are so many layers that permeate the book, envelop the senses and relate to the reader about another world that sits on the fringes of everyday African-American reality. There is within thsi book something that can only be compared to the U.S. discovering a Nazi secret decoding book. There is a cadence, a language, a knowledge that is carried within Africanist people, thrugh the neighborhoods, the folks that live in them that is apparent here. That's very, very hard to translate adequately on to paper, to reveal that code, bare it to the light of publication and yet in many ways still keep it private. Easy Rawlins is more complicated than simply being a good man. He's a bit of a tortured man, wanting his best friends woman and child as his own, risking death to be with them and then still remaining loyal to his insane friend Mouse and telling him where they are. Problem #1. Problem #2 Another insane man, an IRS man who is after Easy for not paying his taxes and who challenges Easy as at face value, the color of his skin not realizing that Easy will kill him, wants to kill him and is only stopped by a meeting with Problem #3---an insane FBI agent who wants Eays to infiltrate a Baptyist church to root out communists. Of course Easy knows that communism is the scapegoat for the ol' okey-doke but he's in a terrible spot and getting more and more desperate. Usually half way through a book you can see where it's going, who has to die, who the killer is, even why the killer did something but Mosley turns this around into something that chugs the mystery along but makes it secondary to whatever is goign on in Easy's life. Every thing has a freenzy, a desperation in Easy's life---love, sex, money but he's trapped by what color he is and where he's comfortable. I read this book in a night and felt a nice comfort in its' embrace, its' soft language and hard people. People who drift in and out of the story, some mattering, some not but all the same all of them are watching Easy, some with love, most not. I don't know if this can be seen as the best book from a series and I don't even know if a series can be seen from these books---they stand on their own but shoudl be read one right after the other. I'm jumping all over the Easy map now but the one thing I can say is that I met Mr. Mosley, I wa swalking with a friend and he wa sstanding by a tree in the Village, and right before we got close enough to speak with shared a glance, a look that communicated so much, as much as Easy does in and more about what it is to be an African-American man simply being, how trouble gonna come for you and your choices are face it, run, kill it or be killed. Not too many books teach aabout manhood, African-American manhood so deftly. Buy the book, send it to a friend, not all of them will get it but then tell them that this is why African-American strangers nod, say hello to each other---we all know the code.

Eva is the captain of the soccer team, basketball team, laccrose team, and just about ever other kind of sport you could think of. Isabel is the champion of her school's debate team, and can tell you about the hundred years war, the war of roses, and any other anciet war you didn't want to know about. Abby's little brother Alex is only in second grade, but he is a whiz at anything electronic, and in his spare time, he can often be found bulding computerized robots. So how is Abby supposed to find her place in this family of superstars? Abby thinks that if she can star on the soccer field, she can prove that she is a true Hayes. Will Abby be able to prove her worth? Find out in this wonderful book. Yessiree, it is simply Awsome!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Start.......2006-05-14

Abby Hayes feels outshined and overshadowed by her family. Her older twin sisters are perfect - one excells in sports, the other is the top of her class.
Her younger brother is a math genius, her mother is a marathon running lawyer, and her father owns a successful company.
So what about Abby? Where does she fit in? As she begins her first day of fifth grade, the question bugs at her mind relentlessly. But eventually she finds that every cloud does indeed have a silver lining.

5 out of 5 stars read for any difficult life transition!.......2003-07-28

I wouldn't necessarily say that what I'm dealing with is a trauma, but I'd call it a difficult transition. Read this book if you're in something similar! It's easy to read and understand-I felt like West was speaking right to me, and so have several other people I've recommended Silver Linings to. It's practical, too-I like all the suggestions she gives about how to deal with loss. I highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with loss, or a difficult life transition. Read it, and pass it along to anyone else you know!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful book.......2003-05-27

A friend gave me this book-I'm going through a divorce that's pretty tough. Silver Linings gave me an entirely different way to look at, and work with, everything I've been resisting. I read it last week and already things feel different. I'm not out of the woods, but Silver Linings has been like a lifeline. I can't recommend it highly enough. If you're going through a tough time, or if someone you know is, get this book! It also has a very helpful section for support people, how you can also take care of yourself during this time and actually use it as a healing time for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU'VE HAD ANY LOSS!.......2003-05-27

This book is a GEM. I've had a whole string of losses in my life and didn't know what to do with it all. Silver Linings has given me hope and courage, and helped me see that, even with all the pain, that this is a very powerful time in my life. I especially liked that Melissa West calls these times "destiny points", when the opportunity for emotional and spiritual healing and renewal is so present. Thank you so much, Melissa, for giving us all this gift!

3 out of 5 stars Couldn't stand the hero........2003-08-14

After reading this book I've concluded that I just can't stomach the alpha male heroes in this author's early books. The totally unsubtle, slam-bam-thank-you-mam approach is just too over-the-top for me. I have also been consistently disappointed by this author's love scenes, and her inability to credibly portray sexual chemistry between her lead characters. I liked how the heroine constantly kept the hero on his toes, but he was just plain tiresome. I'll stick to this author's more recent works.

5 out of 5 stars Another solid JAK gem!!.......2003-03-08

I would start this review by saying this is one of the top three of my favourite JAKs...but then I stopped and realised I have 12 to 15 top three JAKS! Yes, she is a formula writer. If you don't care for the formula, then don't buy her. Simply enough. For those that appreciate her deft wit, her sharp repartee, there is no one like her. I adore her writings and think this is a one of her better ones.

Mattie Sharp stared down at the man dressed all in white, watching him die. When he uttered to "tell him reign in hell", she knew she'd stepped into the middle of something very bad. The "him" was Hugh Abbott, a man she has been trying to avoid for a year, a man she once offered to follow to the ends of the earth - or in this case to St. Gabriel's Island.

Hugh Abbott was her aunt's 'pet wolf'. He was a security expert and troubleshooter for the large multinational business her aunt inherited. Since her aunt adores Hugh's genes, she fixed him up with her niece, Ariel. Maddie watched the mismatched romance go down in flames, knowing from the first time she saw him her sister was all wrong for Hugh. Maddie stood by, waiting, knowing she was falling in love with him. When the expected breakup came, Maddie made her pitch. A candlelight dinner, a good bottle of wine, and a memorable night of lovemaking, in Maddie's mind, were the formula to Hugh's heart - or so she thought. Only, when the morning came for Hugh to leave for St. Gabriel's Isle, he refused to take Maddie. He tried to tell her it was bad timing. He was angry over the break up of his engagement with Ariel, but it came out all wrong, with him saying Maddie was "just not his type".

So hurt by the rejection, Maddie made sure she stayed away from Hugh. This was not easy, since her Aunt is determined to get Hugh in to the family, and is most willing to help play matchmaker. Hugh, once he got over the breakup with Ariel, saw he wanted Maddie, but she would not accept any letters or calls from him. To Maddie's aggravation, four times during the year, he conspired with her aunt to bring Maddie and him together. All four times, Maddie left town rather than face the man she now sees as a "big mistake".

When her aunt sent her to pick up a medieval sword from the Island of Purgatory - from the man who was at her feet dying - she figured it was an excuse to get Hugh and Maddie together. Her plane was due to land in St. Gabriel's, so to thwart the
matchmaking plans, she took another flight to Purgatory. Hugh is hot on her heels, and she is very glad for the comfort of his arms. Only, now they are running for their lives through the jungles. Despite their predicament, Hugh sees this as a chance to win Maddie back. However, Maddie is fed up with being "second place" to her beautiful and gifted sister, and is determined not to be hurt by Hugh again.

Maddie is charming, funny and warm; Hugh is a wonderfully droll 'throw-back'. They will win your heart. It's Jayne Ann Krentz are her very best.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Krentz style........2001-07-26

A delightful story that is among her best. If you're a fan, don't miss this book. If you're not, start with this one, you'll soon understand the reason Krentz is one of the more popular romance/adventure writers.

4 out of 5 stars another Krentz success.......2000-02-06

I am a big fan of Krentz in all of her psuedonyms and this book was no exception. I especially appreciated that throughout the book Mattie sticks up for herself. Even though she loves Hugh he must prove himself worhy of that love. Also Mattie wont let him intimidate her into forgiving him or doing whatever he wants her to do. I love a character with a mind of her own.

5 out of 5 stars One of Krentz' best!.......2000-01-27

This was one of the first novels I read from Jayne Ann Krentz. Hugh is the kind of man every woman wants, just enough arrogance to make you realize he's a man, and just enough tenderness to make you fall in love. Maddie is the typically high strung executive woman trying to eke out an acceptable career that will keep her in close contact with her artsy family. She is insecure in her job and her looks. When she was rejected by Hugh (after having had a flasy romance with Maddie's flamboyant beautiful sister), Maddie is not very willing to give it another try. Hugh comes to realize Maddie was the best thing that ever happend to him. A fun and exciting and passionate read while he does everything he can to get her back into his life an d the people they run into trying with all their might to seperate them. I loved this book!

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone who's depressed, Christian or not.......2004-12-10

This is the most helpful book I've ever read. If you suffer from depression (or love someone who does), this is a must-read. It will change your whole perspective on depression, will help you get through it, and could even save a life.

I strongly feel that "Dark Clouds, Silver Linings" is appropriate for Christians and non-Christians alike. The basic facts of depression are not dependent upon a particular spiritual point of view. While Dr. Hart refers to God throughout, he does NOT say that the way to overcome depression is just to pray harder or trust God more. His suggestions are practical, effective, and based on years of experience as a researcher and a practicing psychiatrist.

What I expected from a Christian book on depression was a guilt-inducing message like, "If you trusted God enough, you wouldn't be having this problem." Or perhaps, "Rejoice in the Lord always... and get moving." Instead, Dr. Hart explains how and why depression happens (and no, it's not a faith issue), and provides realistic ways to get through it.

Dr. Hart's central idea about depression is that *most* of it happens for a reason. Depression is usually a reaction to a loss of some sort. Its purpose is to get you to STOP and FEEL the emotions connected to that loss. When you understand that, you can give yourself the space to heal the underlying issue(s). This is not to say that he recommends wallowing in a slimy mess of self-pity. He wants to help you heal the hurt, then get out of that mess and move forward.

The author acknowledges that some forms of depression are biological in nature and respond best to medication. He sees medication as neither an evil nor a panacea. It's just a tool to combat a physiological problem.

The style of the book makes the information very accessible to the average reader. The last thing you want to do when you are down in the dumps is wade through a heavy book that is full of abstract information. Dr. Hart seems to get that. He uses a Q&A style to keep the information clear, concise, relevant and easy to find.

The book is not published on fancy paper, but give it a try. There is a silver lining out there, and this book will help you find it.
