Great book for graduate coursework.......2007-05-15
This book was part of my graduate course on Managing Diversity & Conflict. I will not be selling this book as it is a keeper and well worth the read.
Excellent layout and easy to follow........2007-01-16
This book was for a class, but I recommend it for anyone who is having difficulty communicating with someone in their life.
Beyond the 8th Step.......2004-10-07
As a mediator, I enjoyed reading the application of the 8 steps as they apply to many types of relationships. I especially appreciated the Appendix "Frequent Problem Areas" addressing the "yes, but what if this happens", e.g., anger, stubborness on one side, resistance, etc. This book is for the more evolved who are open to peacemaking and ready to move beyond impasse in their conflicts.
Essential Life Skills Reference Book.......2001-03-24
This book teaches the reader a process towards better conflict management. It is not a hard process to learn; its not an easy process to use all the time, though. That being said, I recommend this book HIGHLY, especially to anyone who is looking for ways to make their home life, work life, or community life more enriching.
Dudley was a professor of mine in undergraduate. He's a great man, and this is a *great* book.
When you're ready for peace.......2000-08-16
When you're waaay past "Looking out for #1" or "Winning Through Intimidation," when you're more than a few miles down the road from "Getting to Yes," when strengthening and developing all of your relationships has become far more important to you than "winning" or getting your way or creatively persuading the other person to do your bidding....then perhaps you're ready for this book. That's right, when you're ready for peace, even if you're the one who'se going to have to change, here's a framework, a process. But not until you're ready.

Customer Reviews:
Rich, vibrant colors from a remarkable author.......2006-04-20
This is the story of two boys who find a pair of motorcycle goggles. They wear them long enough for a group of older boys to try and take them. Fortunately the boys who found the goggles are wiley enough to escape. The last line of the story is cute..."Things look fine now!"
I gave this book a 5 because of the art work. Ezra Jack Keats is so talented! Rich vibrant colors mark the illustrations of two adventurers in the city. The illustrations by Keats are appealing because of their gritty realism and exciting colors. While the pictures will appeal to children, they also captivate the imaginations in all of us. Keats records part of our society and culture as children experience them.
Everybody should experience Ezra Jack Keats.
Love the books about Peter..........2006-01-06
I think this is a great book, along with the other books in the series. My two-year old daughter likes to read the books about Peter and in fact, will turn the pages and "read" the book herself, talking about the pictures which vividly tell the story. We live in the city and I like that these books are not set in the suburbs or countryside as many children's books only show that type of lifestyle. I would not characterize these books as being set in the ghetto or inner city as other reviewers have; I think it's just a portrayal of life in the city vs. the typical idyllic children's book setting.
Grew up with this book!.......2004-02-04
As a tyke in the 70's, I remember reading "Goggles!" many times and always finding myself emerced in the story. I now have twin boys that I can read it to and show them what their dad grew up with. Great book.
Goggles.......2002-12-16
This is a very good book. It is about two boys who live in the ghetto. When they were in a junkyard playing around, Henry stumbled upon a pair of motorcycle goggles. They looked great on him. One the walk home two bullies want to take the goggles. The punk pushes henry down and the goggles fall out. Everyone looks at them, Then the dog runs off with them. The boys split up and go to the secret hideout. The dog gos slowly after. They run though a pipe and give the goggles to henry.
Well hope you enjoy reading this book. It is written by Ezra Jack Keats. It is one of the many books she has written, hope you get a chance to read them all.
Goggles!.......2002-10-23
I enjoyed reading the book Rich Cat, Poor Cat! It was about these two cats one is a street cat and is poor, scubby, dirty, no one pays attention to him, and he has to find his own way to live, his own shelter, food, and the other cat is a indoor cat that lives with a very rich family that cleans, feeds, give shelter, and takes care of him! Yes, I think this book is great for kids because it makes you think about all the cats out there that don't have homes! I think children would like to read this book because it teaches you things about cats and you should take care of every pet you own!

Book Description
There is perhaps no bigger or more important issue in America at present than youth violence. Jonesboro; Paducah; Pearl, Mississippi; Stamps, Arkansas; Conyers, Georgia; and, of course, Littleton, Colorado. We know them all too well, and for all the wrong reasons: kids, some as young as eleven years old, taking up arms and, with deadly, frightening accuracy, murdering anyone in their paths. What is going on? According to the authors of
Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill, there is blame to be laid right at the feet of the makers of violent video games (called "murder trainers" by one expert), the TV networks, and the Hollywood movie studios--the people responsible for the fact that children witness literally thousands of violent images a day.
Authors Lt. Col. Dave Grossman and Gloria DeGaetano offer incontrovertible evidence, much of it based on recent major scientific studies and empirical research, that movies, TV, and video games are not just conditioning children to be violent--and unaware of the consequences of that violence--but are teaching the very mechanics of killing. Their book is a much-needed call to action for every parent, teacher, and citizen to help our children and stop the wave of killing and violence gripping America's youth. And, most important, it is a blueprint for us all on how that can be achieved.
In Paducah, Kentucky, Michael Carneal, a fourteen-year-old boy who stole a gun from a neighbor's house, brought it to school and fired eight shots at a student prayer group as they were breaking up. Prior to this event, he had never shot a real gun before. Of the eight shots he fired, he had eight hits on eight different kids. Five were head shots, the other three upper torso. The result was three dead, one paralyzed for life. The FBI says that the average, experienced, qualified law enforcement officer, in the average shootout, at an average range of seven yards, hits with less than one bullet in five. How does a child acquire such killing ability? What would lead him to go out and commit such a horrific act?

Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill.......2007-05-17
This book hits upon a topic that has become severe in this country; youth violence. It discusses many avenues that contribute to our youth using violence against each other. It brings to light numerous strategies that parents, teachers, and other adult agencies can use to decrease, if not completely vanish, the violence seen in our youth. Fantastically written, this book is a must read for anyone who has kids, deals with kids, or is just a member of our society.
Important as Today's Headlines.......2007-03-19
Lt Col Grossman spent a lifetime studying what made soldiers more efficient killers in combat and able to survive. His work extended in to the world of police officers. With a worldwide reputation Grossman is the goto guy.
And then Grossman turned his focus on the army of deadly young killers. Killers who achieve far better performance than police officers in combat. Somewhere in their "training" was a mechanism that turned off the moral control system and honed their responses. As one young killer explained why he first killed his enemies and then his friends, he was on a roll.
Bound to be opposed by Hollywood, the electronic games folks and others, Grossman has the credentials that demand attention from balanced readers.
Grossman documents the effectiveness of "games" which give potential killers the motor skills, training and discipline to be cold blooded mass killers, without any training whatsoever on real firearms. Games, TV and the movies have sanitized shooting and death. The first bullet ever fired by the youngster is a head shot and just like he has done in thousands of games he quickly turns to make the next shot , the next and the next , just as he has been so well trained to do.
In contrast the young person familiar with firearms is far more likely to stop after one shot, devastated by what they have done.
One of the truly worrisome details highlighted by the book is that the only reason murders and murder rates have declined is the higher quality of emergency medicine available in most areas of the country. Without these improvements in emergency medicine the murder rate would have increased significantly.
Today April 16, 2006 his message is more relevant than ever before. Give knowledge a chance. The pattern of the Virginia school shootings follows the warning pattern described by Grossman. If we fail to heed the message we condemn hundreds to their deaths at the hands of these killers we have raised in our communities.
Highly recommended.
This book should be widely read.......2005-12-06
This book approaches the phenomenon of media violence in three parts. First, it points to the rising crime rate in America, during a period of declining racial violence, soaring incarceration rate, terrific advances in police technology, advanced medical technology, faster first-response medical help, and an increasingly educated populace. Yet violent crime has skyrocketed (Aggravated assault, to take one example, was 80/100,000 in 1960, and is about 400/100,000 today), and the muder rate has remained level. To see how far medical advances have come and to illustrate how the murder rate should be declining, the authors point out that that a wound that 9 times out of 10 killed in WWII was survived 9 times out of 10 in Vietnam.
The relationship between these trends and violent media is not one of pure speculation, but of methodical study. There have been thousands of studies on the relation, virtually all of which have concluded a link between violent media and violent behavior. One of the most interesting studies related took place in an area where there were four villages, all without television. Researches went in and observed for two weeks children on the playgrounds in these villages, and recorded all instances of physical aggression. Then televisions were brought into two of the villages. New researchers, unaware of the goal of their research, were brought in to again observe the children. Levels of aggression remained constant in the villages without television, and increased 160% in the villages with television.
The second part of this book talks about how watching violent media actually affects us. It does so in 3 ways:
1. It incites fear in us. Violent crimes are much, much more common in TV-world than in the real world. We subconsciously internalize this danger, and become more fearful of others than we would be if we weren't so hyperaware of violence, and didn't expect violence to be so common.
2. It desensitizes us. The more violence we watch, the less is affects us physically. The level of violence that excites a person's body to a certain point must continually increase to keep effecting the same reaction. As we become hardened to violence and horror on the screen, we also become jaded, without realizing it, to real-life violence.
3. It makes us more aggressive. A person who watches violent media, when presented with a conflict situation, is more liable to think of a violent solution as a viable one, and quicker to resort to such a solution
The third part of this book deals with video games, which have much the same effect as violent TV and movies. Further, however:
1. They train players to kill. Michael Carneal, a 14 year old kid who had never fired a gun before, went on a spree one day. 8 shots to 8 people, all in the head or upper torso. This inexperienced kid killed like a Special Forces vet. Video games didn't make him kill, but he (and many others) could never have been so deadly without them.
2. Video Games lower the resistence to killing. One of the greatest innovations in military technology between WWII (where on average 15% of soldiers actually fired at the enemy) and Vietnam (90% fire rate) was the movement from bulleyes to silouhettes in targeting practice. Video games are even better. Playing them, one becomes used to shooting at human figures. A first person shooter player just doesn't have same the resistence to shooting another human as a non-player.
In sum, video games don't make people kill, but they do make them damn good at it, and they do lower internal resistences which might otherwise prevent someone from killing.
I said that there were three parts in this book, but there is actually a fourth. Both authors are parents, and end the book in practical advice about how to talk to kids about simulated violence.
If you watch a lot of violent media or play a lot of violent video games, this book does call for some self-examination. It is difficult, however. How can you tell if you are desensitized? How can you tell if you are fearful, or aggressive? I can only say that I have, long before reading this book, been finding myself more senstive to violence, less aggressive, and less fearful of other's aggression since I have stopped watching TV and stopped playing video games.
The most Eye Opening Book on children and violence.......2005-09-07
This book is definitely an eye opener for parents and future parents. Mr. Grossman has packed this book full of knowledge that will "without a doubt" keep your child more safe and less likely to turn to violence. He gives you excellent statistics, knowledge, case studies, and powerful tips that WILL keep your child safe and on the road to success. This book is the best violence+children book I have read. Excellent work and a must read for all parents.
Highly credible with an interesting approach.......2005-05-27
The authors explore the possibility that violence committed by young people results from what they learn through television, movies, and video games. They cite scientific studies and research to emphasize that children actually learn how to kill by viewing these games and programs. It takes an in-depth look at media violence, but does not touch on the other media-related social problems.
Book Description
One of the most feared crimes among urban dwellers, armed robbery poses a serious risk of injury or death, and presents daunting challenges for law enforcement. Yet little is known about the complex factors that motivate assailants who use a weapon to take property by force or threat of force.
Armed Robbers in Action is not like previous studies that focus on the often distorted accounts of incarcerated offenders. Richard T. Wright and Scott H. Decker conducted dangerous, life-threatening field research on the streets of St. Louis to obtain more forthright responses from robbers about their motives and methods. They also visited several crime scenes to examine how situational and spatial features of the setting contributed to the offense. Quoting extensively from their conversations with the offenders, the authors consider the circumstances underlying the decision to commit an armed robbery, explore how and why targets are chosen, and detail the various tactics used in a hold-up.
By analyzing the criminals' candid perspectives on their actions and their social environment, the authors provide a fuller understanding of armed robbery. They conclude with an insightful discussion of the implications of their findings for crime prevention policy.

Brilliant........2004-09-24
All I can say is... wow. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to currently be a student of Richard Wright's, studying Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. While this ethnography is extremely insightful and intriguing, it doesn't even begin to capture the sheer brilliance that IS Richard Wright. He is truly a one of a kind researcher, and many of his ideas have been groundbreaking in the field of Criminology -- especially since the studies for this book were done in the '80s, a much more conservative period as far as criminological research is concerned. This book would be interesting and even entertaining for anyone, but especially for those with a background in Criminology or Sociology. I would also recommend Richard Wright's other piece about this research project, BURGLARS ON THE JOB.
All that and a bag of chips.......2000-04-01
This is first rate ethnography that is well-written, insightful, and entertaining. Yes, I said entertaining, as in a good read. Fascinating book that will really make you think about what lies behind criminal decision-making . . . highly recommend it.
A reader from Palo Alto, CA.......2000-03-23
Sounds good. A bit too verbose. The book's name is better than the conclusion. Nothing you would not expect if you watched enough violence movies.
Laughed my ass off and then thought about it........1999-09-25
I spent three years being bored to points beyond death in law school, but this book was something all together different. The fact that it was written at all is impressive. You read about the inner city in the papers, but this book takes you there, and not just into the slum, but into the heads of the dregs of society. The logic expressed by the subjects of this book is so radically foreign to those of us in textbook America. Take a chance and look into the underclass. Oops, I used the class-word. I know we don't have those in this country, but this book may make you think. I only wish Pat Buchanan could meet some of these guys.

Really Bad.......2006-07-12
Since he split with John Weisman as his actual writer, Marcinko's stories just don't work anymore - especially if he tries to write this stuff himself, as he seems to have done with this one!
Not good. Not worth the time and certainly not worth the money. Marcinko has slipped from the cutting edge to the garbage dump.
"It's fatal to enter into a war without the will to win it." Mac Arthur.......2006-04-18
This is the first novel I've read in this series. A great story, and well written by someone who really knows what he's writing about. Actually, I think this sort of a story can be better done as a novel as opposed to a movie.I find that movies today are too short on description of how things work and too long on special effects. I read a Western series called Longarm which is set in the Old West in the period following the Civil War and up till the late 1880's. In many ways, this is the same sort of story but dealing with modern weapons, helicopters, espionage, and terrorists as opposed to outlaws, horses, six guns ,deserts, soiled doves and saloons. However; in both cases we get the chase, and shoot-outs between the good and bad guys.
Because the author has actually lived the world he writes aout ,we are given a real insight into this modern world of protecting the people who operate in the world of Terrorism.
We see how the stakes are so high today with the weapons available to terrorists when compared with rhe limited damage that could be accomplished by the outlaws of old.
While reading novels is not the greatest source of learning how things work;I believe there is a lot to learn from this book ;particularly the methods and tools used to fight terrorism.
Here's a sample of some of the great lies from the book;
"An expert is someone who does the basics better than anyone else."
"Gun control means hitting the target."
"It must be a defect in my personality."
"Afterward he goes back under the glass where all good Rogue Warriors should be kept until they're needed."
Violence of Action is another outstanding book in this series.......2006-02-27
I have read every Richard Marcinko book ever published - and like the others, this book is outstanding. The action kept me reading along at an extremely fast pace - the futher along that I got in the book - the fewer times I would take breaks - because I had to know what was going to happen next. Mr. Marcinko has done an outstanding job with every book in his series - this book included. I definitely recommend this book to all other readers. I have also read the next book in the series - Vengeance and it too was awesome. I can't wait for the next book - I wish he had more time to write more books each year.
Not the best.......2005-01-11
The acronyms needed translation like in the other books and Trace Dahlgren was too badass a character for my taste. Also the fact that Marchinko was the romantic lead with every female in the book was a little far fetched.
I want to like it, but it's garbage.......2005-01-07
I loved Rogue Warrior and Red Cell, but the series has declined since then, with this last book being a massive nose dive. I see that Weismann is no longer contributing (or doing all the work as it may be), and this book definitely had a different feel. It could be Marcinko wrote it and, no offense, isn't a good writer, or more plausibly, it's another writer trying to be like Marcinko and failing miserably. Marcinko is still the man, which is why I'm pissed about this book being crap, it sullies his name.
Book Description

This book is off the hook!!!.......2007-09-02
OMG!!! This book is sooo much better than part one! But part one is a MUST read because it sets the storyline and the history of the characters, which is vital!
This book is full of DRAMA and will take you on an emotional roller coaster!!! Once again, I was laughing and shedding a few tears the way all good novels forces me to do. I didn't want the story to end. I loved every bit of the young Asia Prince story.
Butterfly is all grown-up and ready to experience life as an adult and boy ole boy does she experience it!!!!
GREAT STORY!!!
CRAZY!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-16
First I have to say read Hood Rich before reading Big Tymers. This book does NOT disappoint!!!!!
Prince wants a different life for his daughter Asia, but Asia is not trying to hear him. She's gonna have to learn the hard way.
What P doesn't know is that his past is about to catch up with him...and Asia.
If you liked Hood Rich, you will LOVE Big Tymers.
A Prince on Her Throne.......2007-06-06
In this sequel to HOOD RICH, Crystal Perkins-Stell places Asia Prince in the forefront. Asia thinks she's grown and doesn't need the advice of her lame mother and stepfather or her overprotective dad. Being a true Prince, Asia is going to do what Asia wants to do. "Ballas ain't nothing nice, they get caught up in a lot of bullsh*t...you don't have to be lookin' for trouble in order for it to find you. Baby, sometimes you're guilty by association and it will get you caught up just as quick." That jewel of wisdom falls on deaf ears. Despite warnings of avoiding guys living hood rich, Asia falls head first for a young balla, Alex, who has her nose wide open.
Crystal Perkins-Stell covers familiar ground in BIG TYMERS revisiting characters we came to know and care for. She makes the trip worthwhile even including characters from another novel. (BROOKLYN JEWELRY EXCHANGE - another good one to check out) Part drama, part street, BIG TYMERS tells a gripping story while exploring the ties that bind family and friends with a few twists and turns. I really enjoyed the growth of her characters and how everyone came full circle and were able to reflect, realize and appreciate. BIG TYMERS was an enjoyable read that I recommend. Its only flaw is its lack of editing. I'm ready for Uncle Silk's story.

Daddy's Girl.......2007-04-13
This was a good read for me, you must first read HOOD RICH to understand just what is going on with this book. After I got fininsh with that joint I could not wait to see what was going to happen next with the Prince family. This book told about Asia Prince better know as butterfly daddy's liitle girl, I must say Asia grew up arrogant and with a very smart mouth "she got it from her granny". In this sequel she would reap from her daddy sins and pay the high cost of fame that what overdue to the peolpe he hurt along the way. In the end is family really all you got? I like this book alot and hope to read more from this author soon.
Right on tyme.......2007-01-22
Rarely have I read a sequel that was better than the first book. This is one of those occasion when the author did her damn thing. I really like I was apart of this story. It made me wonder is P and Ant real people. I'm glad Asia was able to find her happiness after all. Keep up the good work.

There's Fair Day and Skit Night that apply with. One of his ideas will involve Ray Bannister and his guillotine. Who will win Archie as the Assignor of the Vigils, or will it be Emile Janza, Bunting, Obie? Will Ray Bannister's guillotine actually work? If you would like to know read this great book and take the problems they faced and great things that came! This book I think was better then "The Chocolate War" beca'use the first book left me in a spot where I wanted to know more so much more! It made me want to read the second book "Beyond The Chocolate War". Trust me, this book will take you on a ride through the minds of these wonderful characters that Robert created! Hope you like the book!
For young and old adults, this is honest and provoking.......2006-04-24
I was a huge fan of The Chocolate war when I read it so many years ago, and a friend passed this to me when I was looking for something to read over the weekend. It was a great weekend read, because it isn't to long and it has a good paced plot.
It is the end of the year and The Vigils (almost a frat like group of preepy boys) are at it again. Archie, their leader, is quick to think of cruel and unusual punishments for his 'victims' to deal with. some of them work, and some of them don't, but it is the fighting back against him, and the headmaster of the school, which brings conflicts to anyone who tries to step out of line.
The plot will bounce between a depressed, suicidal student desperate for revenge, the Vigils and their mis-doings, and Obie (a Vigil memeber with a new heart), and of course, Jerry Renault, who was badly abused earlier in the year, is back for more beatings.
The book is dark and honestly written, which I always admire in young adult fiction, it really lets you put yourself in the shoes of those involved and wonder what you would do. Great subject matter for a guided reading group in Jr high or high school (although probably not appropriate for in class reading aloud) that is looking for important issues to discuss. Though written years ago this book has not lost it's luster and gut wrenching style.
I recommend this highly for serious readers of young adult age, and the adults who care to discuss it with them. I definitely think the first book should also be read, but it seems a bit darker and disturbing, and even if you haven't read it it you will still get right into this great sequel.
Danny B. book summary.......2006-04-05
I was reading Beyond The Chocolate war by Robert Cormier.Beyond The Chocolate war is a sequel to The Chocolate War. So it would be better to read The Chocolate War first, so you under stand the book a whole lot better. I liked this book because it was very interesting with all the stuff that happens in the book.
In this book there is about six main chracters, Archie, Obie, Goober, Jerry, Janza and also the headmaster Brother Leon. Also in the book is a mafia like group called the Vigils, which is led by Archie. The Vigils basically run the whole school, by telling them what to do and they do it in fear of what might happend if they don't do it. When some of the vigils do somthing to Obie, Obie willtry to kill whomever did that. If you read The Chocolate War, you would know that Jerry almost died during aboxing match that was put into because he didn't sell chocolate bars, well he basically wants to kill Janza for doing that and Goober feels like he let down Jerry last year because he didn't save him so now Goober will do anything to help. Now Ray, the new kid, is caught up with Obie and Ray is in a magic show with Obie.
I think a young adult would like this better because they would understand it and it has some adult stuf in it that is not suitable for a fifth or sixth grader
Mmmmmm, chocolate!.......2006-03-30
I read The Chocolate War about 25 years ago. I liked that book, so I figured why not read the sequel? I had forgotten a few of the plot points of the first book, but there was enough exposition here for me to get caught up quickly. The book takes place a few months after the Chocolate War, with most of the same characters. I don't want to spoil the plot, so I won't get into that. But I will say it's a very good book that will appeal to people who enjoyed The Chocolate War. Does Archie finally get his comeuppance? My lips are sealed.
Well written, though ultimately unsatisfying sequel.......2006-03-28
Anyone familiar with Cormier's books knows of his pitch-black view of human nature, so the outcome of this follow-up to TCW will not surprise in that regard.
However, this predictability does not go far in making this book a compelling read, especially when you figure out the themes are pretty much identical to the first installment.
I had very high hopes for this book. Cormier's writing is top notch, as is his character development, and even by the first 3/4 of the book, you are primed for greatness. Even the back of the book leads you to believe that some monumental (no pun intended) retribution lies in wait for Archie and his evil minions. But, instead, we get the same old denouements in a different wrapper.
Now, I like dark books and don't particularly enjoy happy endings if they're not believable, but this book's unhappy endings are no more plausible. At the time and place of the original book --- before the horrific "showdown" on the athletic field --- it was somewhat imaginable that things would remain status quo at Trinity. But after those events, and the subsequent seismic rumblings that follow (which the sequel expends great effort at communicating to the reader), it is unimaginable that here be no real repercussions (aside from the suicide of one character that, while masterfully drawn, doesn't address the vileness of the school and it's roots of evil --- or where that evil comes from).
I would have preferred some interaction from the many mute parents (including David Caroni's parents or Jerry Renault's dad) that could have really ignited a powderkeg under the whole affair.
Good fiction contain lots of conflict, and there just isn't enough to warrent the amount of text here. It's a lot of energy to expend only to see the same scapegoats hauled out and abused again and again. Real people --- at least not all --- are seldom so cowed by tyranny, unless it's executed by a more omnicient force, such as goverment. And the Vigils aren't on that caliber, not even close.

Book Description
Toni V is a teenager working for the City Five demolition crew. While drilling through concrete he unearths a battered water can containing a parcel wrapped in faded brown paper. Though he's supposed to turn over anything he salvages, Toni V smuggles the package back to his room, unwraps it, and finds a notebook.
This is the diary of Pelly D. It's totally secret, so if you're reading it I hate you already.
Toni V figures there's no harm in paging through it since he doesn't even know this Pelly D.
I'm not being arrogant. That's just the way it is at school. . . . I'm Pelly D. It's pretty simple. I RULE!
The more Toni V reads, the more he thinks Pelly D is rich, stupid, and petty. Yet he can't help starting to care for her, especially as her words slowly reveal the chilling state of her world.
I know it doesn't matter what gene tag you have -- Mum's made that clear again & again like a stuck CD. It's just . . . How can I face everyone at school if . . .
What happened to Pelly D? Toni V needs to know. And he has one clue:
Dig -- dig everywhere.

A novel about the importance of historical memory.......2007-06-25
Two stories parallel one another here in the same physical location: an unthinking, uneducated young laborer is tearing apart and carting away a destroyed city, some time in the far future when mankind has evolved gills and has settled on far away planets. He finds a diary hidden in the ruins. Although he can barely read, he gradually becomes immersed in the privileged life of the writer. Through the diary he learns of his people's own recent history, a history that has become obscured through propaganda and his current leader's efforts to erase all vestiges of the recent past. The diary itself is a powerful record of arbitrary racial classifications, loss of privileges, ghettoization, and ultimately deportation. It gradually dawns on the laborer that the writer is not coming back, and why. You are left with a sense that, in a world where all computerized records have been erased, the existence of this written record of events might be the only thing that could spark a revolt against the leader's attempt to eliminate historical memory. This novel could very appropriately be read in any middle school or high school class on World War II or the Holocaust. It is not at all clear to me why the School Library Journal gave the book such a mediocre review; quite apart from the compelling message, I think any teen would have a hard time putting this down.
my god.......2006-05-05
Sickly fascinating. A perfectly normal girl living the life and her world spirals into hell. So easily with so little resistance all of her friends and even family turn on her so that they may benefit. Jesus. Definitely a keeper. I'm still sick to my stomach.
A futuristic war diary.......2006-03-26
As L.J. Adlington's author biography states, her first novel, The Diary of Pelly D, is based on her long time interest in war diaries. The novel is told from the point of view of Tony V, a teenager working on the Citry Five demolition screw. During his work, he discovers the pure fluff of the diary of Pelly D, buried in the old city plaza.
Although she doesn't know it (and refuses to admit when chaos is upon her), Pelly D has written the ultimate war diary, which provides Tony V insight into a historical conflict which was largely covered up by the government. Pelly D is a privileged leader of "cool" who loses everything in the new world order of gene profiling and limited resources. Her journal is that of a rich, petty girl who still manages to endear herself to Tony V and the reader.
My chief complaint about this book is the over-dawn exposition. Adlington spends far too long in the world of scientific and political terms that are foreign to the reader. Discussing this book with librarians and teachers, I've found that several people abandoned the book due to the frustratingly vague opening chapters. I encourage readers to make it to at least the mid-point before making a decision on the novel. The journey is well worth it once the story picks up in the second half.
The life of a girl in the future. .......2006-03-12
The people have already left Earth, and have moved on to a different planet. Technology has increased in remarkable ways, and we have developed gills. Pelly D lives a privileged life and has everything that she wanted. But she discoveres a terrible secret and nightmares become reality.
This book was disturbing and very strange. The book is a great science fiction read, and it will make you think about what the future truly holds for us, humans.
unusual and disturbing.......2005-12-14
pelly d's diary is a haunting sci-fi read. the author seems to have little hope for the future of humankind. even though we have moved on to other planets, evolved to have gills, and created new worlds, we (humans) are still a bunch of prejudiced you know whats...rings true. sigh.
the ending leaves the reader with more questions than when the book started, which keeps it in your head for long after you've put it down. i keep hearing that its a new take on the holocaust, but i didn't see it as clearly as that. it was a war book and felt real, but whether it was based on the holocaust is incidental to me...it was definately genocide though, and the book is scary for sure.
though provoking and a good read.

Book Description
Providing the most complete coverage of conflict available, this book represents a total approach to the study of conflict. Solid research and theory help readers better understand the nature of conflict, while practical material helps them make better communication choices. In addition to considering what people bring into a conflict in terms of their attitudes, beliefs, values, and personal characteristics, the book offers new ideas and attitudes to help readers approach conflict more effectively. The extensive use of suggestions, applications, narratives and case studies makes this volume an accessible and useful resource. The book deals with conflict from beginning to end -- from perception of the problem to agreement that it has been resolved or managed. It introduces the idea that conflict is inevitable, explores its consequences, then looks at conflict in the context of values, attitudes, and beliefs, followed by gender and culture. Next the book describes types of conflict; its phases and cycles; and conflict styles, strategies, and tactics, with special attention to collaboration as the preferred strategy. The last half of the book covers social psychological and communication perspectives, research on conflict and intimacy, choosing among the communication options available, effectively confronting others, cooperative negotiation in win-lose situations, the escalation of conflict into anger and stress, and impression management. The book ends with a discussion of conflict, forgiveness, and reconciliation. For anyone interested in understanding and dealing with conflict more effectively.
