Lotz of good info.......2007-07-27
There is alot of good information in this book. I haven't started applying any of it, so I cannot tell you about that. But, if good, well organized, useful information is what you are after...buy this book.
Book for Pre Diabetics/Diabetics.......2007-07-27
I am pre diabetic and appreciated the information I got from this book. My family has enjoyed the recipes tried so far. They also gave me ideas about how to change my existing favorites.
The Sugar Solution.......2007-07-18
It seems to be a never-ending battle. We start the day with the best of intentions. Today we are going to eat right, exercise, and control our stress. Then reality sets in. We wake up late (that stupid alarm didn't ring) to a chaotic mess of getting kids off to school on time (making sure that homework actually accompanies them). Our only aim at this point is to get to work before the boss notices. There's no time for a real breakfast, exercise, or a nice relaxing meditation session. Coffee and a donut will have to do as we drive through hectic traffic.
By midmorning, adrenaline and four cups of coffee have worn off and we are starting to feel drained. To make up time lost, we skip lunch or gobble down some fast food as we try to get caught up. With some food in our stomach's we finally feel back to normal. Unfortunately, this feeling is short lived and the day drags on.
We all know that we should do better. We all know that we should take the time to eat right, to exercise, and to reduce our stress. However, just getting through each day seems to take up all the energy we have.
The Sugar Solution reminds us that by taking care of ourselves each day we not only reduce the risk of countless life threatening diseases but we also increase our energy levels and abilities to cope with day to day stress. More importantly though, this book unravels the mysteries of carbohydrates and provides nutritional, exercise, and stress relief programs that fit into the average person's busy life.
Ganele a la glucosa.......2007-06-27
I bought this book for my older daughter, who is overweight. Much of the symptoms of her condition were detailed in the book. But the book is too long. Anybody trying to reduce and control weight wants fast results.
A book so big is not practical. Author should review and condense it, probably to less than half.
Great Book.......2007-06-04
This book taught me a lot of things about my body. I was never aware of my blood sugar levels, but now I recognize feelings I've always had - shaky, irritable - as low blood sugar. I've totally changed my diet b/c of this book, and I'm losing weight without being hungry. I'm sending my copy to a friend, and I've been telling a lot of people about it.
I really only read the first half or so. It gets a little repetitive, which is fine. That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. You'll hit a section that appeals to your way of thinking. The message is the same throughout. It's not breathtaking, but it's full of staistics and information that will change the way you think. e.g. most Americans only get half the recommended amount of fiber in their diets.
I feel like reducing high glycemic index foods has ton a lot for me. I had a chronic cold/sinus infection for over 6 months that is gone. I feel more clear-headed. I'm able to resist my cravings for sweets, which is a big deal to me.
Get this book! It will turn your attitude around, and change your body and your life.
Book Description
Since its first edition in 1990, The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook has sold more than 600,000 copies. Its engaging exercises and worksheets have helped millions of readers make real progress in overcoming problems with anxiety and phobic disorders. The Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Resources in Mental Health (Norcross, et al., 2003) gave the book its highest rating and praised it as "a highly regarded and widely known resource." Thousands of mental health and medical professionals recommend this book to their clients and patients every year. Simply put, it is the single finest source of self-help information on its topic available anywhere.
The text of this fourth edition has been fully revised and expanded and includes two new chapters: a discussion of physical conditions that can aggravate anxiety and an overview of the use of mindfulness practice in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and some forms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. As in previous editions, the book offers the most up-to-date information on medications, natural supplements, and complementary strategies that can alleviate anxiety symptoms. The sections on relaxation, nutrition, and exercise have all been updated and broadened.

Good Overview for someone suffering from phobia or anxiety.......2007-08-13
The only thing it lacked is specific examples. And some easy remedies. Other than that it is a great book to read!
Excellent WorkBook!.......2007-08-11
We use this workbook in our psychiatry clinic. Patients like it and it's easy to use. Just make sure you're willing to do the work, otherwise you're wasting your money.
Help for Anxiety.......2007-07-30
A VERY helpful resource for people with anxiety. Lots of insight, suggestions, and extremely user friendly to the lay person.
Must Read for Anyone With Anxiety.......2007-05-21
This workbook is full of insight into what makes you feel anxiety and great ways to take steps to overcoming the fears associated with anxiety. The first book (or workbook) that didn't make me feel like I was crazy and that there are really easy ways to deal with daily anxiety! Your family members will find this enlightening as well, since they generally mis-understand what you are going through.
The Anxiety&Phobia Workbook.......2007-05-14
Purchased this on a recommendation by a school psychologist and it does help the student put what they are feeling into words. The person can keep track of their progress and have something conrete to refer to.

In Touched with Fire, Kay Redfield Jamison, a psychiatrist, turned a mirror on the creativity so often associated with mental illness. In this book she turns that mirror on herself. With breathtaking honesty she tells of her own manic depression, the bitter costs of her illness, and its paradoxical benefits: "There is a particular kind of pain, elation, loneliness and terror involved in this kind of madness.... It will never end, for madness carves its own reality." This is one of the best scientific autobiographies ever written, a combination of clarity, truth, and insight into human character. "We are all, as Byron put it, differently organized," Jamison writes. "We each move within the restraints of our temperament and live up only partially to its possibilities." Jamison's ability to live fully within her limitations is an inspiration to her fellow mortals, whatever our particular burdens may be. --Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
As a founder of UCLA's Affective Disorder Clinic and a co-author of a standard medical text, Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison may be the foremost authority on manic-depressive illness. She is also one of its survivors. And it is this dual perspective -- as healer and healed -- that makes Jamison's memoir so lucid, learned, and profoundly affecting.
Even as she was pursuing her psychiatric training, Jamison found herself succumbing to the exhilarating highs and paralyzing lows that afflicted many of her patients. Though the disorder brought her seemingly boundless energy and mercurial creativity, it also propelled her into spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempt at suicide.
Powerfully candid, exceptionally wise,
An Unquiet Mind is one of those rare books that has the power to transform lives -- and even save them.
Customer Reviews:
An Unquiet Mind.......2007-10-07
Jamison describes with utter passion and depth the horror of her disease to the point that you suffer for her and want to cry and reach out and give her support. However as the book continues it becomes less personal life instances, and more of a list of her life accomplishments and increasingly hard to comprehend where she had the time for the massive amounts of activities she is apparently involved with when seemingly absorbed by this overpowering mood disorder simultaneously.
Also it is difficult to feel at all sympathetic when she so stubbornly supports her inability to feel objectified by this disease. She writes as if she is begging for sympathy and compassion for manic-depressives but yet determinately supports its benefits and her overall gratitude to it in her life. She describes the disorder as if living with satan himself while she is tripping on acid and then states the phenomenal accomplishments she has accumulated while under his suicidal influence. It's hard to feel bad, and hard to believe. Not well written, she misses details as to her relationships and time periods when detailing her list of projects which makes it hard to gauge and follow not only periodically but developmentally. The feeling of reading a list of achievements one might include on a college application is the overall emotion I relate to this memoir.
superficial account of author's pretty nice life - not an in depth account.......2007-10-04
Ok, Kay Redfield Jamison has manic-depression. This is a horrible disease. However, she underscores time and time again its association with creative genius. The accounts of her highs and lows are superficial - it is mostly a memoir of her, her academic career, and her various boyfriends (and husbands)- all tall, or handsome, or wonderful dancers or artists. Dr Jamison appears smug, and not a little full of herself. The disease which she has is glamorized and sanitized, and minimized. The basic story is unremarkable. I am sorry I bought this book.
clarification.......2007-09-29
This is an informative, empathetic book.
I just wanted to clarify something in response to the review by "not to be mean but...talkinsmack":
While some psychiatric drugs should not be mixed with alcohol (for example, MAOI inhibitors cannot be mixed with fermented drinks, like wine and beer), this is not true of all or even most psychiatric drugs. Unless the patient taking them is an alcoholic or has other health issues, there is usually no reason why he or she cannot drink in moderation. Of course, individual patients' circumstances may differ.
To say that Kay Redfield Jamison belongs "inpatient" is ignorant and incorrect. If that's meant to be a joke, it isn't funny.
Sorry to go off on a tangent, but incorrect and sweeping generalizations like talkinsmack's about psychiatric drugs and the people who take them undermine the author's (excellent) work.
great book.......2007-09-10
I am bipolor and really appreciated this book. I will share it with my family.
Right on the money.......2007-09-10
If a bipolar patient needs to know that he/she is not alone in suffering, this is the book. I have had two close friends diagnosed as bipolar, and both said this book was amazing to them. It put into words what they were feeling when they felt no words described it.
I read the book as well, hoping to gain some understanding into their mental health issues and also felt it was very well written by someone that obviously knew what it was like.

Chapter 1.......2007-09-26
I don't know if this book will be any help to you but it was NOT to me...
My wife only read the 1st chapter, "I HATE YOU..." and then she stopped...
I think she found her answer :)
Great Insightful Book.......2007-08-29
This book was received in the requested time frame. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to get this book, read it, review it and tell others what I discovered.
A Must Read.......2007-08-28
I wish I had known about this book years ago. Knowing how to put up boundaries with a BPD is very valuable. It is right on target.
I Hate you, Don't Leave Me.......2007-06-10
When I first read this book, I had to stop after each chapter..sometimes after each paragraph to cry. At last, there were people who understood and felt what I had been going through my whole life. It was such a relief. The only down side is that the book is a bit dated.
After a few weeks, I got up the courage to show the book to my husband and suggest that he read it. After all, I'm the one with BPD. When I showed him the book, he said, "Oh, our marriage therapist gave me this book to help me understand you better." My only regret is that I didn't learn about this book sooner.
Borderline Personality Disorder.......2007-06-06
This book is a good introduction to BPD for the lay person. It is not the final word for a clinical professional. Should be read with the understanding that there are gradations of BPD, as exists among all mental illnesses.

Worth Reading and Doing.......2007-08-04
The principles it expounds are sound and the practices it prescribes are effective and beneficial. In a nutshell: it works.
That said, we are fortunate to have a better alternative for an individual who wishes to self-treat, without the assistance of a therapist. The magisterial book, _The Feeling Good Handbook_, by David D. Burns is one of those once-in-a-lifetime works which has no peer.
Both books share the same perspective on changing how you feel. As other reviewers have mentioned, _Mind Over Mood_'s basic tool is called a "thought record." You are instructed to change the way you think by writing down your thoughts and feelings in the thought record. You then identify the evidence for and against your thoughts. You conclude by writing a more balanced view of things.
The primary method of the thought record is looking at the evidence which supports or conflicts with your thoughts.
The basic tool of Burns's book is called a "daily mood log." This tool bears some resemblance to the thought record but there are subtle differences. Whereas Greenberger and Padesky have you critique your thoughts solely in terms of the evidence for and against them, Burns provides you with a more varied toolbox. He has identified a list of ways that we systematically distort our thinking. For example, we might get down on ourselves or others by using the words "should," or "must," or "ought." I might feel bad when I tell myself that "I should have turned left instead of right when I got off the highway." A more balanced thought would be, "I would have preferred that I had turned left and I can accept myself for having turned right." When I develop the habit of examining my thoughts and replacing them with more balanced thoughts, my mood brightens.
I currently am following Greenberger and Padesky's method in that I have done at least one of their thought records daily for 60 days. I haven't done one of Burns's daily mood logs for a few years. But I found Burns's mood logs to be a better method for improving my mood and I plan on rereading Burns's book soon.
_Mind Over Mood_ is an excellent book. I recommend you read it and practice it. If you could only buy one book, I would recommend you buy Burns's book. But most of us have the ability to buy more than one book and _Mind Over Mood_ is certainly worth studying.

Mind over mood.......2007-05-13
I am currently working with the book in conjunction with CBT (Cognitive behaviour Therapy) I was reccommended the book by my therapist. I am finding the book extremely helpful . I think everyone should have a copy whether they are working on themselves with a professional or not. I am learning new life skills. Excellent stuff
Great Book!.......2007-05-13
My Psychologist recommended this book to me. I ordered it the next day and received it within the week. It has helped me tremendously. I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from depression or any other mood disorder. I would also suggest that a loved one of someone described above read this book also.
This Book Can Change Your Life.......2007-04-10
After years of therapy that helped a little, this book finally transformed my life. Instead of just learning to deal with my crazy anxieties, I was finally able to eliminate them. I am now a firm believer in cognitive behavioral therapy. This book provides easy exercises that work - to teach you how to change your life by changing your thoughts, one at a time.
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone and will continue to do so.

Book Description
Thoughts and Feelings adapts the powerful and widely adaptable techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) into a set of tools readers can use, not to solve a particular problem, but to overcome any of the emotional and behavioral changes that life throws their way. CBT recognizes that most negative feelings arise from confused, irrational thoughts. By learning to identify and change these thoughts and by replacing destructive and limiting behaviors with new, more constructive ones, readers can start steering their lives in the direction they want to go.
Changes to this new edition include revisions and updates to the core CBT chapters as well as a new chapter on how to use mindfulness to bring focus and intention to the process of change.
Customer Reviews:
Some good chapters, but not that fantastic.......2007-05-17
I was expecting a little more with this book and so a little disappointed in the end. It has some good chapters like "worry" and suggests some helpful strategies but I was somehow expecting more. It is probably more designed for the naive reader rather than a psychological resource material. However, because it presents information in a very simplistic way it can have some use if you want your patients to read up on somethings.

10 Habits That Mess Up a Womans Diet
ASIN: 082128004X |
Book Description
The first diet that will help you feel good while losing weight written by a respected nutritionist and author of the bestselling books Power Eating and Power Food. Dr. Kleiner is a leading nutrition authority on eating for strength who has put together a diet that has already been successfully tested in a Seattle weight-loss group and documented in a series by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. This book proves that you can choose healthy foods that both make you feel great and, when eaten according to the plan, help you lose weight. Most diets cause chemical changes in the brain that make the dieter feel depressed. The typical plan is often too low in calories. In THE GOOD MOOD DIET the participants eat feel-good foods with both ideal timing and ideal combinationsa balance of protein and fats to go with carbohydrates. Eating from a list of feel-good foods, including fish, flax seed and eggs, and eliminating feel-bad foods including refined sugar, helps dieters feel better and lose weight. However, sweets and alcohol are not tabooeating a bit of chocolate and drinking a glass of red wine a day is okay once youre two weeks into the diet.
Customer Reviews:
Not as great as I was hoping........2007-09-26
I can see where this "diet" can help people feel good, but it is very impractical for everyday life. For example, the author recommends making a homemade smoothie for your 12:00 snack, which would be fine if I wasn't at work at 12:00. For those who don't want a smoothie at noon, she suggests a small omelet instead. Again, pretty impractical for people who do not work from home.
Despite the impracticalities of following the diet religiously, I have learned a few eating tricks that help me stay full during the day and do improve my energy level.
this works well.......2007-05-28
I have lost several pounds using this diet. When I follow it strictly I do feel good. It is fairly easy to follow, except for the fact that I'm out running around a lot, and then it's harder to grab something on the go that works in with this. If I remember to pack my own I can stick with it.
Finally! This one really works -- and is manageable.......2007-05-28
Three of us are using this book. We're about 6 weeks into it. I'll give it 100% endorsement. You can easily put meals together that will meet your own eating preferences. If anything, we find we can't consume all the food she proposes, because we're all physically small -- in the 5' to 5'4" range and simply can't eat that much. Also, this diet is targetting 30-50 somethings and we're older than that, so our metabolism is slower.
We've tried various other approaches and failed. This one is easy and weight comes off easily. Although the two ladies involved are losing inches more slowly than I, I've gone from 136 to 130 in this time. As my "design weight" is about 127, this is a huge and very welcomed surprise.
The Good Mood Diet: Feel Great While You Lose Weight.......2007-05-14
The Good Mood Diet: Feel Great While You Lose Weight book is a work in progress and don't have a final opinion yet.
This one works!.......2007-05-12
This is a wonderful book. Finally a diet that makes you feel good while working. It is easy to follow and you don't feel like you're even on a diet. You can't get hungry with all the food you eat. Definitely give this book a try!

Just what I expected.......2007-09-10
I was instructed by a counselor to order and read this book. So far, it is helpful. I was pleased with its condition and the promptness in delivery.
Life Changing, Enlightening, Motivating, Real.......2007-09-02
You are not alone anymore when you read Feeling Good. The keys are clearly given for the root causes of depression and anxiety and then you are lead to hope to unlock the door of feeling good. It will take effort and belief but it is truth that will get you out of the pit if you really want out and want to feel good instead of bad. It is one aspect of overcoming depression. I would also recommend lifestyle therapy such as diet and exercise changes.
Book buying customer.......2007-08-28
My shrink suggested I buy Feeling Good so I did. It's a good book that has obviously been written by someone who's done a lot of research on the subject of depression. But that's the problem, for me it's too much research.
The book is longer than a depressed person has patience to read. It's over 700 pages and all that is packaged in a small paperback. All I want is the results of the research not hundreds of pages of studies and survays and research. I know it's good to know all this stuff but as a depressed person I don't really care about it. All I'm interested in is in dealing with the depression. Bottom line, I havn't finished the book yet because it's too much like a text book and that's hardly what I need.
Other than that, as I say, it's a good book with a lot of information if you have time to either read it all or try and find the info you're looking for without putting it away for later.
Excellent - this one's a great size for carrying in car, backpack or purse.......2007-08-27
Down to earth, everyday helpful, and the reverse role-playing exercises Dr. Burns uses with his patients and relates to us in this book are not only funny, witty, amusing and interesting, they are spot-on in their usefulness.
LOVE this book!
Highly Recommended.......2007-08-23
In actual documented scientific studies, reading this book has proved to be as beneficial to people suffering depression than any medication available today. Totally comprehensive, it is an absolute must read for anyone who experiences the dreaded "Black Dog". Highly recommended.
Book Description
An estimated 5 million Americans suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and live diminished lives in which they are compelled to obsess about something or to repeat a similar task over and over. Traditionally, OCD has been treated with Prozac or similar drugs. The problem with medication, aside from its cost, is that 30 percent of people treated don't respond to it, and when the pills stop, the symptoms invariably return.
In Brain Lock, Jeffrey M. Schwartz presents a simple four-step method for overcoming OCD that is so effective, it's now used in academic treatment centers throughout the world. Proven by brain-imaging tests to actually alter the brain's chemistry, this method doesn't rely on psychopharmaceuticals. Instead, patients use cognitive self-therapy and behavior modification to develop new patterns of response to their obsessions. In essence, they use the mind to fix the brain. Using the real-life stories of actual patients, Brain Lock explains this revolutionary method and provides readers with the inspiration and tools to free themselves from their psychic prisons and regain control of their lives.
Customer Reviews:
Highly conceptual but treatment is very misleading.......2007-09-10
The author is Psychiatrist who has great insight into dynamics of OCD. He explains in great detail about biological aspect of OCD. He accurately points out that brain signals are hoax and ignoring them is way to overcome OCD. He proposes 4 steps to do this which are based on Buddhist mindfulness. This is where the treatment is erroneous. Although most people know that OCD signals are irrational, at the peak time of OCD ritualization, the suffer can't distinguish between what is real or not. Reassuring the brain that the signal is wrong and should be ignored actually re-inforces OCD brain. The recovery comes when one accepts that the signal is valid yet refuse to do the compulsion. (Eg- Yes the door may not be locked and house will be stolen tonight but I won't check the door).
It seems schwartz treatment aspect is misleading although he may be good intentioned. He seems to have gained popularity by being a consultant to 'Aviator' movie. Again this is due to his brilliant insight into nature of disorder not the treatment aspect of it.
The best technique to overcome OCD is ERP using behavioural approach. Mindfulness works for mild OCD cases and in maintenance phases.
Good but recommended by nephew's therapist.......2007-08-24
As with a review I wrote for a purchase for my OCD nephew, I am told by my sister (his mom) that this is helping with his therapy sessions.
How do I help?.......2007-08-05
My husband read this book a year ago and found it helpful for understanding a dear relative. I'm reading the book now and found there are many insights into OCD. As well as understanding other people, I'm finding out a little about myself and how to balance out some of my own behaviors. The book is based on the behavior therapy used by professionals with adults at UCLA. There are some wonderful success stories as well as accounts of people who had extreme compulsions/obsessions. Definitely a readable classic on the subject for any layman.
Great OCD Book.......2007-01-20
Recommended by a doctor--has helped a family member tremendously. Highly recommend it for all types of OCD.
decent.......2007-01-10
The steps outlined by Schwartz are highly useful. This is not a clinical book, but certainly one with great value to the general populace.

Customer Reviews:
interesting information.......2007-08-25
This book was a pretty interesting read. However, I didn't try the techniques because everything it does pretty much is a bipass to what faith can do. Some people have it and some don't. But I had no problems with the delivery of the product or anything.
It works most of the time........2007-08-06
This is a great book. I have found that the tapping technique is very effective with at least 90% of the people I have worked with. It will not work, however, on very negative people who are convinced they cannot be helped, those who are died in the wool skeptics who are determined to prove you wrong, people who are clinging to their illness because they are afraid of losing their disability pension or because their illness brings them sympathy and attention from their family and friends. Usually you can identify these people ahead of time and avoid working with them. There are cases where the reason for their illness is a spiritual possession. This will involve finding someone who knows how to work with that problem.
Tapping the Healer Within is AMAZING!.......2007-07-17
This was the most amazing and helpful book I have ever read! I was so excited after the first time I used the proceedures correctly and it worked, that I had to do an anxiety treatment on myself so I could sleep. I couldn't stop my mind from thinking of the incredible possibilities of healing this therapy presented. I bought five more books for friends and family and will soon place another order. Do yourself a favor and order 10 the first time! I have successfully used the treatment to heal my seven year old of a terrible migraine. I also healed my daughter (12) of a severe needle phobia. I used it to heal another 12 year old of being in basements (where she sleeps). I treated another for deep emotional issues that were preventing him from focusing at work. I look forward to using this therapy more and learning more about it. I am presently reading the Amazon.com suggested book called "Evolving Thought Field Therapy" (Diepold...). It is equally amazing and takes this therapy one step further. It also doesn't require tapping, just touching. It is very detailed and included diagnostic instruction with charts. I highly recommend both books. If this one doesn't work for you, read the Evolving book to understand what more you can do to get this therapy to work for you. It REALLY WORKS! I think I have found my future vocation. I hope to train in this field now. Andrea
Kay's Positive Review of Tapping the Healer Within.......2007-02-15
A friend had me read a page of this book. It so interested me that I checked it out of the library, read it, was highly intrigued by it and purchased four copies--one for myself, two for my adult children and one for the friend who first introduced the book to me.
"Tapping the Healer Within" is about removing "perterbations" by usuing thought field therapy (tft) and thus attaining serenity whereas before there was fear, anxieties, phobias, etc.
Currently I am using the techniques described in the book and have met with unusual success in the elimination of stress in connection with the recent death of my mother.
The author, Roger J. Callahan, Ph.D (for many years--20+) has written the book well, with plenty of success stories. He has ended the book with address contacts, etc. There are additional aids available for purchase and they are listed at the end of the book.
After talking with Dr. Callahan personally on the phone and working further with him, I have purchased three additional copies of the book and have given them to friends in hopes of helping them with the stresses of their lives. I highly recommend "Tapping the Healer Within".
Excellent resource book on the basics only.......2006-11-10
This book is excellent for the person who wants to understand the basics and is also a very good resource book. Once on the path of tapping, one goes on to other more elaborate formulaic books. Loved it for what it is.
